Basic Navos Lore
Dating
The dating system used by Navos is different than ours and varies by region. In general though, the founding of the city of Ophi is used as a starting point, labeled as "Year 0.S". The rough parallel to Year 0 is 719 AD for us. So, using our dating system, the Royal Period lasted from 209 AD to 1624, with the Ophi Chaos lasting from 719 AD to 1624. For the Navos, that would be 510 BES to 905 POS, the Chaos from Year 0.S to 905 POS. The modern day for Navos is 1305 POS.
Names
Multiple Navos is the same as the species name, Navos, while a single member is called a Navo. A male Navo is called a nav while a female Navo is a nava and a group of Navos are called navoks. So a sentence would look like this: "Navs and navas! It is a great pleasure to speak to this crowd. As navoks of the grand city of Dagim..."
Religion
Religion plays a different role depending on where you are in Ora-Do. East of the Crested Mountains, religion, known as "Uidimo", is part of daily life and routinely checked to keep it up to date. The western side of the mountains is far more secular, with religious aspects being more optional. Regardless, both sides of the mountain range worship the same god: Ui Telas. According to the sacred book, "Tela Di Mamo", Ui Telas created the Navos in his image to populate the barren planet of Marmund. After some early members of the species disobeyed his orders to not harm the nature of Navalos, Ui Telas punished them by casting their souls into the ground and using their bodies to erect monuments as a warning to not disobey him.
While Tavaners, those living to the west of the Cresteds, generally disregard this ancient story as mere myth, the Remani, those living to the east of the Cresteds, more firmly believe that it happened. Many statues of Ui Telas and those early Navos can be found around Remani towns and cities as a way to show Ui Telas that they heed his warnings.
An aspect of Remani interpretation of Uidimo is something known as Azolka. Azolka is the term used to describe a type of warfare fought by the Remani. Similar to our concept of a crusade, Azolka targets those who do not believe in Uidimo or, more commonly, those who do not follow the Remani style of Uidimo. Azolka calls for the punishment of those captured as a means to appease Ui Telas for the false judgement those captured had followed; this usually ends up being torture or death. To the Remani, a lagin is the term used to describe these non-followers/wrong believers; their form of our infidel/heretic. Due to the violent nature of Azolka, many wars have been fought between Tavaners and Remani Navos over Azolka. The most famous one of these was the Lower Crested War between members of the Crested Confederacy and the alliance of Dagim and the Quadrant.
Warfare
Due to Navos being incredibly large and naturally muscular, much of our style of warfare is altered to fit their needs. Horses do not exist on Marmund, so things like horse drawn wagons and chariots are instead pulled by qualified navs. In the early centuries of Ora-Do, the Remani had popularized the concept of the knight. Knights were armored members of nobility whose purpose was to fight in war. To become a knight, a nav had amass a large effort body count in combat, from war or rebellion. Their armor were similar to our knights with some differences: the joints weren't armored to allow freer movement, the armor was thinner to allow higher speed, and the helmets were angled in the front and back to allow projectiles to bounce off them. I will sketch out the knight's layout at a later point.
Weaponry mirrored that of our own except the weapons were larger and heavier than our own. The concept of a tank was introduced way earlier to the Navos than to us, during the reign of Patorsol II in 239 BES. The tank was essentially a large covered carriage. The bottom was open to allow the crew of 8 to move the tank (remember, medieval times and horses don't exist here). Wheels were placed on the inside to take the ease off the crew while a large access door was placed at the rear to allow entrance or exit. Several small trap doors, big enough to stick a spear through, cover the sides of the tank, allowing knights to stab outwards, while a trap door with a wide enough gap was used for visibility. The armor of this tank was simple wood as metal was saved for the knights and weapons, although the armor did go down enough to cover the feet of the crew and wheels of the tank.
Gunpowder, or "dustika", was invented during the Ophi Chaos in 109 POS to gain an upper hand in the conflict. The formula was leaked, causing the idea of a dustika weapon to spread. The first firearm, made of a small tube strapped to a log, proved that a weapon could be made with dustika. Within 300 years, firearms, or "dustipons", became common enough on the battlefield that knights began to be armed with dustipons alongside their melee weapons. The tank also evolved: lighter sheets of metal replaced the wooden armor and general construction, shelves were installed inside the tank to allow for dustipons to be stored, and variants of the 8 nav crewed tank emerged, ranging from 3 nav to 12 nav crews. The trapdoors allowed for the crew inside to fire out at the opponents, mimicking the firing of our tanks.
