50k in 17 Days!!!

Well, I did it! Not only did I finish the 50k challenge, I did it in only 17 days! Thanks to my AMAZING writing community that kept me going and cheering me on, and my best friend @eldritchflowerwriter who went temporarily insane with me and did 12k in a day at my side, I managed to finish the 50k challenge super early!

So what does that mean for this project? Well, it's not done yet, for sure. My goal for WallpaperWIP is to finish around 80k words for the first draft, and I'm well on my way! I've still been working on the book throughout the month even if I finished early, and I am hoping to finish my last 30k before the end of November. I am currently sitting at around 68k, so right now that goal is looking pretty doable!

After that, I plan on chucking it at my CP so he can brutally tear it apart as much as possible during December-January while I'm working on finalizing UtDM. Then, I'll start draft 2! It's coming along way faster than I ever hoped it would, and I am both terrified and excited to have it ready for your hands!

General thoughts on the former novel writing month:

Their unapologetic stance on AI is super offensive. Like, what is even the point if AI can just write 50k words for you???

Yes, I am boycotting the organization. Just need to save some of my previous novel info before deleting my account.

BUT.

I still have a novel idea that I’ve been obsessing over since April and am already mentally prepared to write in November. So.

I will still be writing it but I’m calling it the 50k 2024 challenge.

Haven’t decided which word tracking website to use yet.

The motivation that came from the community is what I’m gonna miss (my local writers group disbanded after the ML fiasco), so I need a new one.

Need suggestions!! Looking for writing sprints and general pep talks!

Since I'm stepping away from the official program this year, I'm updating my tag. NaNoWriMo has shifted beyond Chris Baty's vision, according to his book, No Plot? No Problem, and the creepy corporate overtones went too far with the "condemning AI is classist and ableist" bullshit.

I am still going to write 50k in 30 days during November so that's my new tag: 50k30days

Plus side: it'll be nice to have a tag that works for other months, too (because, again, the point of the challenge was always to turn off the inner editor and write quickly, because words on the page can be edited. A blank document is nothing. The challenge was never about buying shit, which is heavily pushed now, but the idea that ANYONE could write a story if they tried--and getting the words written).

anytime I have to scroll thru a big fandom on ao3 there’s always dozens of chat fics and it makes me sad bc 9 times out of 10 they don’t have plots or are too ooc for me to want to read and it sucks bc I feel like the concept of an epistolary story told with only text messages is so fun!! Accounting for the diff ways characters would type/use emojis/emotes, how fast they would respond (if they have time stamps in the story) who’s getting left on read, trying to extrapolate what’s going on behind the texts, how a plot could progress in a text only format… it has so much potential yet usually it’s only lolrandom type meme stories which don’t scratch that itch for me 😔

no matter how much they wrote this nanowrimo they won at writing. 50k is an unreasonable goal for a lot of people for a lot of reasons, and whether they set and met a lower goal for themselves or they shot for a full Nano and missed, congratulations are in order.

we wrote some words, guys. we did a good fucking job writing words.
