synopsis ; based on the Chinese Drama, 'When I Fly Towards You', in which you, a going-on-high-school English genius named Huang Yuting meets the Mathematics genius of the 10th grade, Nishimura Riki, underneath the rain.

“Yuting, Moka! What did you get into?” Sunoo lights up when he sees you and Moka leaving the classroom behind the many students filing out after homeroom. A sloppily folded piece of paper is in his hands, no doubt revealing which extra curricular he’s been accepted into. With just one glance at his bright smile, though, there’s no second guessing that he’s gotten into his desired one. 

“WE BOTH GOT INTO FENCING!” Moka screams in his ear, grabbing his shoulder and jumping up and down repetitively. “I DIDN’T GET INTO BASKETBALL!” 

Just then, a voice pipes up behind the three of them. Jungwon and Riki walk up, and the elder of the two pulls the lollipop out his mouth. “I don’t know you’re happy or upset about that,” he comments with honesty. 

“Obviously I’m happy… this one senior wouldn’t stop catcalling me when I went for trials. You know what freaked me out even more? The coach told me that I’d be a good addition to the team. I’ve never felt more scared to be accepted into something.” 

Jungwon appears not to have heard the last two sentences, his eyes wide with shock. “Who’s the senior? Does he need a beating? Absolutely disgusting?” 

You cock your head at him and frown. Since when has he ever been concerned about Moka’s well-being? Even Riki, usually expressionless, turns to look at him like he’s grown a second head. And he’s his best friend – he should know him the best, right?

Gawking at him, Moka shakes her head slowly. “No. You crazy.” 

Gratefully, Jungwon returns to his normal self and advances towards her upon hearing the derogatory term. “Who’s crazy, huh?” And they dissolve into an argument that doesn’t surprise anyone anymore. 

“Anyway!” Sunoo says chirpily, ignoring the cat fight behind him. “Riki, I bet you got into dance, didn’t you?” 

You swear Riki sneaks a glance at you and nods coolly. 

“When are your sessions?” You ask, refusing to let the conversation fall into awkward silence. Luckily, Sunoo’s around, and Riki tends to be more talkative with you when his friend is nearby. Well, Sunoo’s usually nearby, but that’s besides the point. The three of you walk down the hall together. 

“Monday and Friday, 3.15-5.15.”

“Mine are on Wednesday and Friday, 3-5!” You realise excitedly that one of the days clash. “I’ll come visit you on Fridays, then, after I finish.” 

Though you miss the way Sunoo jerks his body away from you both and gags, you don’t miss Riki’s soft smile down towards his feet, even as he nods slowly to distract you. 

Riki swipes loose hair away from his eyes, groaning as his legs give out and he collapses to the ground next to Jungwon. Vision blurry from the intensity of the dance he decided to showcase, he glances upwards at where his seniors are standing. There’s a flicker of pride in his heart when he realises that they’re all in awe, jaws dropped and frozen in shock. 

“That was amazing, how did you go on like that for five whole minutes?” The chairperson of the club comes forward, and she places her hand on his shoulder. He shrinks away from it, uncomfortable, and tries to shake away the dizziness. 

At that moment, the door swings open and Riki manages to make out Yuting and Moka entering. It’s 5.10, the clock reads, and they’re here to visit him and Jungwon just before the session ends. 

“Riki! Why do you look like you just died?” Yuting gasps dramatically. The chairperson of the club takes a step back, a faintly disgusted expression taking over her features. An off feeling about her settling in Riki’s stomach, he looks up at Yuting. 

“You try this dance routine for five minutes straight,” he teases her quietly, and gets up to his feet to show her the rehearsal video on his phone. Since the session is ending, the other students disperse and get ready to leave, but the chairperson remains and taps her foot against the ground impatiently. 

“Who are you?” she asks in a near snap.

Yuting doesn’t even bother to look at her before responding sharply, “somebody relevant to Riki… what about you?” which sends her off in a storm. How childish, Riki thinks to himself and laughs. But it’s not at all different from what he experiences with Jungwon and Moka. He’s seen the most of petty fights thinking back to them. 

“What’s got you in such a temper?” he hums, laughing your way. He’s glad she’s here. Leading her over to the side of the studio, he lets Jungwon and Moka fall into their usual banter. Flushing and following him eagerly, Yuting explains that she, too, has an off feeling about his senior. She then points at their reflection in the mirror, seeming to want to get off the topic. 

“You wanna learn it?” 

Riki gestures towards his phone, the video still playing. “I can teach you.”

And so they spend the next hour continuously collapsing into giggles when Yuting can’t execute a step without falling to her knees, and Riki has to repeat the same move a million times for her to finally get it. But an odd feeling overcomes him in a moment where he’s behind her, guiding her every movement. He enjoys the feeling though, fluttery and nervous, causing his hands to shake when he moves her arms to precision. 

Amidst all the laughter and gentle teaching, Riki comes to a conclusion when Yuting turns around and smiles his way. Suddenly he wants to burst into an animated story of what happened that day. Perhaps he’s only talkative with her around.

| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 5.10 - The List

The way this scene encapsulates the richness of Tim and Lucy's relationship is absolutely brilliant. The allusion to the Tim Tests from their early days… the showcase of the dynamic they've developed over time… the reminder of how well they know one another… the dresses that intimate the moments where their friendship was veering into something more… All of these little details are intricately retelling their journey, from colleagues to partners to friends… to this new chapter. And not only is this a really good way to introduce it, it also feels like a promise that their romance is simply one more facet to their bond… that they're still going to be them. At its core, this scene is a love letter to the characters and their story.

The montage of Tim and Lucy figuring out what to wear is perfect. Her adorable expressions and his grumpy ones contrast each other wonderfully… and depict their personality so well. But this goes beyond that. Lucy's dresses, the ones she wore on previous occasions, also tell a story. Of how they got here. The green dress symbolises the very beginning, when they started to recognise their attraction to each other. It was still in the early stages, still tentative. But it's truly where it started to blossom. And then bloomed with that double date, where they were in their own bubble, forgetting their respective dates, and with that dance where they were completely at home in other's arms. It recounts their journey in a very subtle and poetic way. It is also a glimpse into their state of mind, on how nervous they are, worrying about what to wear… On how important this is for them. This new step between them is so exciting… and scary. Neither of them want to ruin what they already have. It's not just a first date : this is supposed to be their last first date. And that's nerve-racking.

It's only natural then that Tim would resort to calling Lucy. Every time he has to step outside his comfort zone, she is the one he turns to. They can ground each other like no one else can. Their romance doesn't change that, as underlined by that phone call. Their classic banter takes over immediately… with Lucy who can't help but tease him. Right down to her fond eyeroll, the one she often has with Tim. A reminder of the dynamic they've nurtured since her rookie days. Just like the reference to the Tim Tests… There's even a hint of what the future holds for them, with this little preview of a Lucy Lesson.

Tim asking her what she is going to wear so he can match is so precious. He's never cared about any of that before. But he told her she was worth the effort and he meant it. But the best part of this scene (for me) has to be his reaction when Lucy mentions the green dress. The fact that he knows which dress she is talking about right away and lights up at the memory… You know a dress made an impression when a man can remember it and gets flustered about it. And in some way, it is a confirmation that Angela's wedding was when he started to realise that there might be something more to his relationship with Lucy. When he let his mind wander, if only for a few hours. Lucy changing her mind right after hanging up is so cute… and so her. And as much as I love her iconic green dress, I like that she didn't wear it for their very first date. If each dress tells a story, then this new chapter needed one we had never seen before. And somehow, I doubt that Tim had any complaints about this one either.

10.ii Twice Upon a Time (ugh we could’ve had a brilliant trilogy to see out Capaldi, but instead we get Moffat masturbating on live television for an hour. look, The Doctor could have had an actual character arc - they feel like they’re on borrowed time after their resurrection on Trenzalore, after the events on Gallifrey they feel like any sort of feelings of ‘duty’ as last of the time lords (as errant and fleeting as such feelings might’ve been) are resolved, and after failing their BIG MASSIVE SEASON 10 ARC with Missy and getting stabbed in the back, and BILL [redacted for spoilers], they’re happy to accept their death - and that’s where the season ends. yuletide 2017 could’ve ended this arc, they’re taught the love of the universe again, they see the goodness they bring to all life - Clara, i am a good man. and when they sit down to die, those words ‘maybe just one more go’ could’ve had the weight of the universe behind them, it could’ve been the greatest who line ever written, had that line actually had weight on its shoulders. Moffat is a hack. mystery-boxing is hacking, end of story. Capaldi, the finest actor ever in the role, was done dirty by scripts with no weight and planning. Grand Moff lives up his own arse - that power gives him the ability to write incredible episodes such as Heaven Sent and everything he ever touched under Davies - but it makes all series, arcs and continuity fall apart into a pile of shit. this episode is the finest example - a universe of potential, reduced to one hour of self-congratulatory masturbation)

I’m currently rewatching qaf (you are partially to blame for it because of your gifs) and I finished S4 like two days ago. And now I’m trying to convince myself to start s5. Just because I want see the ily and proposal. I hate it so much because s4 is such a beauty (if we ignore the posse storyline). Honestly if they ended it there, I’d be okay ngl, I’m just not ready to break my heart by seeing Brian literally end up alone almost worse as in s1, especially because he had so much growth as a person. Why did the writers have to hate us and the cast and give us such a horrible last season/finale? I already know I’ll immediately go back to the beginning of s2 and second part of s3 to fix the bitter feelings.

That's the million dollar question anon? Why did Cowlip write the final season that way?

To be honest it's very rare I watch S5 and if I do it's mostly 5.10 onwards, I avoid the final scene of Brian dancing on the podium to Proud like the plague because it always makes me cry that they ended his story arc that way. There's so much more joy and story telling richness to watching a character evolve and grow into someone better, someone they thought they could never be, finally finding peace, facing their fears and mistakes. Brian was barrelling towards that at the end of S4 he came so far both individually after the cancer/liberty ride arc and with his relationship with Justin. I just think Cowlip had a hard time letting go of the fuck boy Brian Kinney they crafted in S1.

I adore all of S3 it speaks to my angst loving heart so much and it will always be the superior season of qaf.

In between all of the dancing and costume changes, we had our usual takeout picnic and Friends marathon. It was perfection. She still has recital coming up in June, but I can’t believe how quickly competition season flew by! Mother’s Day Tea at the kids’ school. This is something they do for the younger departments, but it ends in 2nd grade. It was our last year doing it together and it’s one of my favorite traditions of the year. They had a lovely spread of drinks and snacks, we did some crafts together, and the kids performed a poem and song for all of us. It was so beautiful and special. Killjoys 5 x 10 “Last Dance”

OMG, this finale was everything I’ve ever wanted. And nobody died! This is how you write a TV show.

We started with a group hug before the final showdown, aww.

Dutch used Khlyen as bait to lure the Lady to his cube on Arkyn while the rest went after her body on the Armada and Delle Seyah and Aneela procured Qreshi missiles via Aneela’s shear hullen power.

The Lady opened the cube and wanted to clone Jaq because he was too unique and precious to risk damaging him.

But when she went to Arkyn, he freed himself (he has some tricks in his sleeve), and then saved D’avin’s life – because that’s why he had sent the Lady the signal to discover him: he had had a vision of D’avin dying and had to come save him. Aww.

Jaq was also shot, but not fatally, since he heals although not as quicks as Aneela – but it got Aneela come to the Armada in all her fury and together they found the lady’s nasty spider/octopus body and killed it.

Meanwhile, Zeph found the Lady’s stash of experimental patients, one of them being Pippin, who’s alive, himself, and his spider has shrunk, so they got their happy ending.

The Lady made Dutch and Khlyen fight to the death, but Khlyen reminded Dutch of his 10th birthday gift to her – a knife she was always supposed to have hidden on herself – and wanted to kill him before he would be made to kill her.

Fortunately, her stabbing him coincided with the others killing the Lady’s real body, so she didn’t actually have to kill him.

Alas, the Lady dispatched who-knows-how-many ships with the hatchings across the J before her demise, so they now have to hunt them down.

Dutch was trying to convince the Lady – whom she didn’t kill, either, because she’s now a human trapped in a human body and kept in Khlyen’s cube on Arkyn – to give her info on them under pain of death, but she also brought her a doll in one of Khlyen’s red boxes. Aww.

Poetic cycling back to the past all around. I liked it.

Delle Seyah named Pree the governor of Westerly and Aneela will give the refugees land on Leith until they can rebuild.

Also, Aneela would have Delle Seyah rule with her as human, but she offered to share the green with her and to see if there is enough to make her hullen again, which is what Delle Seyah chose and I guess it worked.

My only complaint: barely a glimpse of Fancy.

Johnny prepared to leave and Dutch told Lucy to take care of him and bring him home safe in a year (there was even a nice reference to him maybe finding Clara, yay.)

She also told D’avin she loved him, too.

But first, the three undertook one last task together to kill a few hatchings – and it was the most perfect ending of perfect endings. TAF FTW!

So, that’s it.

What a ride it was!

Oof course there have been things I’d like to see (more of) and the show wasn’t without glitches (you know I had some complaints, one in particularly, but it was subjective), but overall it was really, really good and very-well-written, and I can say for myself one of the best TV shows I’ve watched in these five years – if not the best, since unlike some others with comparable writing it wasn’t cancelled.

I am so glad I’ve watched it. I forgot who I have to thank for bringing it to my attention, but thank you!
