Reblog for sample size please!
1st wave - mid 80s-early 90s - the initial emergence from the hardcore scene, still keeping a fairly hardcore sound but now with more sad and personal lyrics and occasionally a more melodic sound. (rites of springs, jawbreaker, embrace, etc)
2nd wave - early 90s-early 00s - the start of midwest emo, with strong melody and a post-hardcore or sometimes even not hardcore in the slightest sound. This is also where emo gained its pop-punk sub genre and screamo sub genre. (cap’n jazz, jimmy eat world, pg. 99)
3rd wave - early 00s-early 10s - needs little explanation. It’s the extremely pop-punk era where emo was heavily in the mainstream often thought of as the only emo music. (paramore, the red jumpsuit apparatus, the used)
4th wave - early 10s-now - known as the emo revival. Initially this wave had a very strong Midwest comeback, and while that’s definitely still a large part, there’s definitely a good variety of subgenres. Some also include emo rap and emo pop as part of 4th wave.
Yes I know some people include 5th wave but I personally find the distinction unnecessary since there really isn’t much of a change in sound. If your favorite is 5th wave vote 4th wave

I have this dream that I am hitting my dad with a baseball bat,
and he is screaming and crying for help,
and maybe halfway through, it has more to do with me killing him,
Then it ever did protecting myself,
and I believe that, yeah, Dad, maybe no one is perfect,
But I believe that you were pushing your luck,
It just sucks it played out like this,
A terrible movie and you can tell none of the actors even give a fuck.

"i've come full circle almost without hesitation
(but not completely without)
i feel in my bones this shit gnawing at my reputation
(i hate that i do that)
just try and feel good about all of this good that you feel'
(you put it to me bluntly)
but i erase the commonplace practices, i'm practically killed
(my up-bringing brings me down)”

NAOKO NEVER LOVED ME!!
Great OK emo band with a great 4th wavey, math-y sound. The vocals and drumming are two particular standouts to me. These guys are some of my favorites in the OK DIY scene right now! If you're in OKC or Tulsa and are free, you should totally check if they're playing soon! They have a ton of great originals as well as this great cover :)

Their Instagram is @naokoneverlovedme, please go give them a follow!

What is your favourite emo music?
SO GLAD YOU ASKED
I’m a huge fan of 1st and 2nd wave emo, though 3rd and 4th also have a very special place in my heart . 5th wave isn’t my favorite but I definitely enjoy a few 5th wave bands.
Here’s a quick lil guide for anyone who doesn’t know the waves:
1st wave - 1985-1991, emotional hardcore
2nd wave - 1992-2001, Midwest emo, skramz, and a bit of emo pop punk
3rd wave - 2002-2008 (some 3rd wave bands kept making music a little later though), mainstream emo pop punk
4th wave - 2009-2017ish, Midwest emo revival
5th wave - 2018ish-now, a huge mix of not only emo subgenres like Midwest and skramz but also some traditionally non-emo stuff like bedroom pop and shoegaze
Here’s a few specific bands/albums I really enjoy:
-Cap’n Jazz (the first 2nd wave band!) (I’ve seen them live btw)
-Rites of Spring (the first emo band ever!)
-“Chaos is Me” and “Dance Tonight, Revolution Tomorrow!” by Orchid (2nd wave skramz/emoviolence)
-Moss Icon (1st wave)
-“Diary” by Sunny Day Real Estate (2nd wave Midwest)
-“Translating the Name” by Saosin (3rd wave emo/metalcore)
-Suis La Lune (I think they’re technically 5th wave?)
-“The Last Thing You Forget”, “Shed”, and “Floral Green” by Title Fight (those are all 4th wave technically? 2009, 2011, and 2012 so on the early side of 4th)
-“I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love” and “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge” by My Chemical Romance (3rd wave (note: I like their later albums too but they aren’t emo))
Okay that’s probably enough… I have ~50 emo artists/artists who’ve made emo music downloaded to Amazon music and I’m actively adding more so if anyone wants specific recommendations please feel free to ask!!!

If I wake up and accidentally crawl into your arms
It's nothing personal
Person-hood has always seemed so strange
Why do things always have to go and change?
Better off if things just stayed the same
If I freak out and I crash my fucking car into your house
Of course it's personal
Person-hood has made me feel this way
Why do things always have to go and change?
Better off if things just stayed the same
