Eurovision 2007 - Number 57 - 4Fun - "Love Or Leave"

Third time lucky, 4Fun. They're a pop/rock/country music band from Vilnius who have been together since 2001. They're led by the lead singer and song-writer Julija Ritčik. She got her start singing in two different Lithuanian country music bands, touring European jazz, blues and country festivals and winning awards for her singing.

The other band members are not just shadows, they are Andžej Zujevič, Justas Jasenka, Laimonas Staniulionis and Rimantas Jasenka. Julija and the band had been keen to get to Eurovision for a few years, entering Lithuania's national final in both 2005 and 2006 with mediocre results on both occasions.

For 2007, they brought Love or Leave, a song written by Julija. With it they brought their unusual staging - the shadow play was there right from the outset in the national final. It's a gentle thing. Hear it in a different context and you'd never guess it was a Eurovision song.

Julija is a woman who is happy at night walking under streetlights and in the shadows with her love, but once the sun comes and the lamps are extinguished, they're outta there. She's besotted, but she's not happy. The crux is whether she should end it.

The accompaniment lends this an uncharacteristically wistful flavour. This isn't despair. Yet. This is an actually thoughtful, if heart-wrenching dilemma for her. She wishes things were different, but is sufficiently clear-headed to see the reality of what's going on. It's going to hurt if she bites the bullet. Maybe she's not quite ready to choose as the song finishes with the problem unresolved and the possibility of the same thing happening again tomorrow night.

The acoustic guitar is what makes this. It lends it a classical flavour, moving up and down its fretboard with fretful agitation, anxiety on top of the gentle pulse of a city in the wee small hours as portrayed by the rest of the band. Space, time, darkness and anguish.

Maybe it was the staging, or maybe it was the novelty, but 4Fun made it through the heats, the semi-final, into the final and then scraped into the super-final of the Lithuanian selection competition in third place on a televote. Their best result ever, but when you barely make it into the super-final, it's probably best not to hope for the win.

But a miracle did happen, and they won. It seems to have come as a surprise to everyone including the band. At Eurovision itself, they didn't have to play in the massive semi-final thanks to the exploits of LT United the previous year. They went straight into the grand final where they managed to finish twenty-first - perhaps a more expected outcome. It's a song that still gets respect from Eurovision fans, even if it's not a favourite.

One thing to note is the staging. It was simple, it was innovative and it certainly got the song and band noticed. It went well with the song's night-time, shadowy theme. It may not have the spectacle that was introduced, but it showed the different approaches to what was on stage was possible and they could both be inexpensive and effective.

The band are still going, albeit with two fewer members and they're now called the Julija Ritčik trio. They tour and do gigs, and even appeared on the Lithuanian Voice in 2023 as contestants. This is a selection of songs from an appearance by them at the Tamsta club in Vilnius last year.

Luka reminds me so much of greek statues and deities.

In greek mythology, the deities are considered to be beautiful and majestic, physically ideal. But they can’t say the same for their personality. Deities in greek mythology did the most diabolical things ever and people still worshipped them. Just like in the Mizi vs Luka round where the cheers for Luka are SUPER LOUD. everyone literally screams for Luka, worshipping him as if he’s an angelic being because of how pretty he is (and he KNOWS it). Despite how pretty he is; to win, he exploited Mizi’s grief over Sua’s death so that her performance wasn’t as good as his.
