1949
The vinyl record format war heats up as RCA introduces the 45-RPM, 7-inch record. It eventually replaces the 78-RPM record for "singles" - one song on each side. The format takes off in the early years of the rock era.

I'm surprised that the record and record player industries hadn't connived to introduce new record speeds and sizes every few years. First it would be 8" at 56 rpm and then 14" at 38¾ rpm and then 199mm at π² + (π - 0.0001) rpm.
