Old planes in modern times: Avignon in Southern France is not only home to the famous Roman bridge (or its remants, rather) on which everybody sings and dances, as the popular French melody goes ('sur le pont d'Avignon, on y chante, on y dance...'), but also to local Aéroclub Vauclusien.

The latter is the proud owner of retired Air France Caravelle F-BOHA. She was taken out of service in November 1980 and ferried to Avignon in summer 1982. There, she is on display in the small park next to the terminal that serves a handful of biz-jets and general aviation flights.

She has received a new coat of paint once, in 2012, to be accurate. Still, it is really astonishing to see in what healthy shape she presents her beauty, after more than 40 years of storage outside. She looks as if she could fly away in no time. The airstairs are in place, and the ground power unit beneath her engines is plugged-in for starting her up...

A tropical storm triggered widespread flooding and landslides in the northeastern Philippines on Thursday, resulting in at least 24 fatalities, sweeping away cars, and forcing authorities to deploy motorboats to rescue trapped villagers, some of whom were stranded on rooftops.

While thousands of villagers trapped in floodwaters have already been rescued by government forces, many more remained in need of rescue on Thursday in the Bicol region, with some still stranded on rooftops. Approximately 1,500 police officers have been deployed to support disaster response efforts, Dizon added.

“We can’t rescue everyone at once due to the sheer number of people and the need for more motorboats,” Dizon told The Associated Press by phone. “We’re finding ways to deliver food and water to those who are trapped but cannot be evacuated immediately.”

In parts of Naga City, flash floods swept away and submerged cars, while mudflows from Mayon—one of the country’s 24 active volcanoes—in nearby Albay province engulfed several vehicles, Dizon added.

Officials reported that stormy weather continued to affect the region, complicating relief efforts. The government’s disaster-mitigation agency said over 2 million people were impacted by the storm, with 75,400 villagers displaced and seeking shelter on safer ground.

The Philippines endures about 20 storms and typhoons annually. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the world’s most powerful recorded storms, claimed over 7,300 lives and devastated entire villages.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar’s music video for ELEMENT., – a single off his latest album DAMN – features beautiful, often haunting imagery which clearly references the work of 20th century photographer Gordon Parks. Check it out below!

Gordon Parks (1912-2006) was a self-taught, multi-talented artist; he was a prolific writer, photographer, musician, composer, and filmmaker.

Parks was born in Kansas but began exploring photography in St. Paul, Minnesota and then Chicago, Illinois. An exhibition featuring Chicago’s South Side led to a job with the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in Washington, D.C. Following his work in the government he turned to fashion photography. From the late 1940s to the 70s he photographed for magazines like Vogue and Life. He took portraits of people from Malcolm X to Barbra Streisand but also photographed families and documented the effects of Jim Crow. The themes of civil rights, poverty, and the experience of Black Americans are found throughout his work.
