40 below is the same in both Celcius and Fahrenheit and honestly if it’s off a little in either direction it’s still cold as balls

The shop you work at is closed due to weather. You’re still here though, receiving packages from a bundled up mail lady. The arctic entry froze shut last night and you had to thaw the doorknob with a heat gun. It’s not the first time this has happened and there are singe marks on the door jam. The shop is closed, you’re only here tofix the heater and make sure the pipes don’t freeze. The retail space is 50 degrees.

Someone touched the summer door. The summer door is made of glass reinforced with wire, like a normal commercial door. There is an enormous crack running over the door. They touched it. Not even hard. Everything is brittle.

You're running a little late because you had to put four layers of pants on this morning. You see a car in the ditch with its hazards blinking. You stop to make sure the other driver is okay because getting stuck outside at this cold is a litteral death sentence. No one’s in the car.

You wear insulated bib overalls to the grocery store. You’re not the only one.

The keypad on the gas station pumps freezes and stoped working at -10F. That was two weeks ago. It’s kinda appreciated because that means you are inside when you strip off your mittens and the gloves inside them to dig into your wallet to pay for gas.

Breathing hurts. You have a scarf on over your other scarf and it’s not enough to warm up the air before it hits your lungs.

Garbage doesn't stink anymore. You wouldn’t know.

You buy ice cream and frozen veggies at the grocery store. This far north, all the “fresh” produce was picked green and allowed to rippen on the three week trip up, so it’s got about the nutritonal value of a stick of wood. The frozen veggies are processed somewhere warm and flash frozen. You leave the veggies in a tote on your front porch, no point in putting them in a freezer that’s warmer than it is outside. You take the ice cream inside because you haven’t seen the sun for a month.

Your friend from Florida wants to see the northern lights. It’s a check on her bucket list, a wild exotic sight. You look out the window at a sky dancing green and pink against inky black. It’s 3pm. The thermometer says -42. You send her a picture and invite her up.

Smoke doesn’t rise. Car exaust doesn't rise. The vapor of your breath tumbles down over your chest. It freezes into a billion dancing crystals of ice, a lingering mist. The scarce sunlight illuminates a gradient of rainbows, filtering the light through pastel shades of frost. Your city of 50,000 people has an air quality comperable to Bejing.

Someone is out for a run. Not an inch of skin is visible. They've got a face mask stiff with frost and glasses on over that. You couldn’t say if they’re male or female. You wonder if they’re being chased.

Every ounce of mosture in the air is frozen. The static charge stands your cat’s fur on end and when he comes looking for warmth and cuddles you shock him in the nose so bad he changes his mind and crawls under the nest of blankets on your bed. You can feels your eyeballs dry out. It doesn’t matter how much water you drink. The thermostat says 12% humidity. you take a hot shower and let the steam fill the bathroom. The thermostat says 13% humidity.

Your siblings want to keep you warm. You roast each other mercilessly in the family group chat. Your sister moved to California. It’s fifty five degrees where she is. But it’s in California so you’re still better off.

Your eye lashes have frozen. It’s kinda cute, instaworthy, icy mascara. You can’t blink untill you go inside.

The dog needs to poop. The dog does not want to go outside. You don’t blame her. The dog needs to poop.
