Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee, Oscar winning filmmaker was born in Atlanta, GA, on this date March 20, 1957.
His production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, has produced more than 35 films since 1983, and they include: She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, Clockers, Girl 6, Get on the Bus, He Got Game, Summer of Sam, Bamboozled, 25th Hour, She Hate Me, Inside Man, Miracle at St. Anna, Red Hook Summer, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, Old Boy, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman, and Da 5 Bloods.
Lee’s outstanding feature documentary work includes the double Emmy® Award-winning If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise, a follow up to his HBO documentary film When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, 4 Little Girls, Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, and the Peabody Award-winning A Huey P Newton Story.
He is also known for his legendary Air Jordan TV commercials and marketing campaigns with Michael Jordan for Nike. In 1997 he launched the advertising agency Spike DDB, a fully integrated agency with a focus on trendsetter, cross-cultural and millennial audiences.
In addition to his films, TV series and commercials, Spike Lee has Directed a number of music videos and shorts for artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Public Enemy, Branford Marsalis, Bruce Hornsby, Miles Davis and Anita Baker.

Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee (born March 20, 1957) is a film director, producer, writer, actor, and professor. His production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks has produced more than 35 films since 1983.
He was born in Atlanta, the son of Jacqueline Carroll (néeShelton), a teacher of arts and black literature, and William James Edward Lee III, a jazz musician, and composer. He has three younger siblings, Joie, David, and Cinqué, each of whom has worked in many different positions in his films. Director Malcolm D. Lee is his cousin. When he was a child, the family moved from Atlanta to Brooklyn. His mother nicknamed him “Spike” during his childhood. He attended John Dewey High School in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood.
He graduated from Morehouse College with a BA in Mass Communications, where he made his first student film, Last Hustle in Brooklyn. He took film courses at Clark Atlanta University. He did graduate work at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned an MFA in Film and Television.
He made his directorial debut with She’s Gotta Have It. He has since written and directed such films as Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, He Got Game, The Original Kings of Comedy, 25th Hour, Inside Man, Chi-Raq, and BlacKkKlansman. He acted in ten of his films.
His films have explored race relations, colorism in the African American community, the role of media in contemporary life, urban crime and poverty, and other political issues. He has won numerous accolades for his work, including an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, a Student Academy Award, a BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, two Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and the Cannes Grand Prix. He has received an Academy Honorary Award, an Honorary BAFTA Award, an Honorary César, and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize.

Cuarenta acres y una mula es una frase que hace referencia a un suceso de la historia de los Estados Unidos. En la Orden Especial de Campo No. 15, proclamada por el General de la Unión William Tecumseh Sherman el 16 de enero de 1865 durante la Guerra de Secesión, se adjudicaron tierras a algunas familias liberadas en parcelas no mayores de 40 acres (16 hectáreas), a las cuales se les brindaba una mula para iniciar su reforma agraria. Dichas órdenes de campo fueron la consecuencia de una serie de conversaciones entre el Secretario de Guerra Edwin M. Stanton y los abolicionistas republicanos radicales Charles Sumner y Thaddeus Stevens tras las perturbaciones de la institución de la esclavitud provocadas por la Guerra Civil.
