For @lesmisletters readers not aware: the thing Hugoâs talking about in the âFew Pages of Historyâ section is the Revolution of 1830, a revolution that happened two years before the June Rebellion of 1832 (the one thatâs the focus of Les Mis.)
Basically what happened in 1830 was this:
â Napoleon lost the battle of Waterloo in 1815 and kings were restored to the throne: the ancient pre revolution monarchy, the house of the Bourbons.
The first restored king was Louis XVIII, who was ultimately more willing to make concessions to the gains of the revolution: he wasnât trying to bring back the âpre revolutionâ monarchy, he was willing to accept the monarchy had to make compromises to survive.
Then Louis XVIII died, and Charles X took the throne.
Charles X was a lot more Ultraroyalist, a lot less willing to compromise. He took a lot of measures to try to claw back the âconcessionsâ the monarchy had been forced to grant to the French Revolution. It was like he was trying to bring back pre-revolution absolute monarchy.
This is what Hugo is talking about here, when heâs talking about why the Bourbons got kicked off the throne:
One morning [the monarchy] drew itself up before the face of France, and, elevating its voice, it contested the collective title and the individual right of the nation to sovereignty, of the citizen to liberty. In other words, it denied to the nation that which made it a nation, and to the citizen that which made him a citizen.
This is the foundation of those famous acts which are called the ordinances of July.
The people of France were not happy about this. Following the monarchyâs nonsense, the Revolution of July happened, and basically the House of Bourbon got kicked out of power.
But instead of being replaced with a Democratic republicâŚ. a series of Political Shenanigans happened and they instead got replaced by another king, Louis Philippe dâOrleans.
Louis Philippe was less conservative and more progressive, far more willing to compromise with leftists. but only like, by the standards of kings. Thereâs only so far you can go while still being a Monarch XD.
Anyway, this is the political context that Les Amis exist inâ trying to boot Louis Philippe and get a democratic republic For Real This Time!
And this section is about Hugo explaining his own thoughts on these revolutions and on the failures of constitutional monarchies.

LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATIONÂ -Â Embryonic Formation of Crimes in the Incubation of Prisons, LM 4.2.2Â (Les Miserables 1972)
The postilion contained a roll of paper on which only these two lines were written:â âBabet. There is an affair in the Rue Plumet. A gate on a garden.â This is what Brujon had written the night before.

Once again, Javertâs arrests are harmful; Ăponine was caught, too, and Montparnasse (who wasnât involved this time, but is definitely dangerous) is the one who escaped. Thereâs almost an inverse relationship between arrest and threat level here (excepting Valjean), and it hurts to see. Of course, itâs not as if arresting more people would help, either; Javert is personally upset that he didnât catch the literal victim of the crime, Valjean, and we know that heâs just trying to live peacefully with his daughter. And Patron Minette can organize in prison, too, so really, the arrests themselves only punish bystanders or less guilty participants. They donât actually do anything about crime, creating more victims without resolving the issues that produced the circumstances of the crime in the first place.
Also:
âHad this sphinx his fore paws in crime and his hind paws in authority? Javert did not accept such comminations, and would have bristled up against such compromises; but his squad included other inspectors besides himself, who were more initiated than he, perhaps, although they were his subordinates in the secrets of the Prefecture, and Claquesous had been such a villain that he might make a very good agent.â
I love the sentences on Claquesousâ magical disappearance, but here, we have a more concrete answer: he may be a police spy, freed by the very officers involved in arresting him. Having just covered revolutionary groups in Paris, we know that police spies were commonplace enough for that title to be an accusation against speakers in the street, so itâs not surprising that they would be found in the criminal as well as the political sphere. And it would certainly explain his mysteriousness. If heâs giving over information to the police, of course he wouldnât want his accomplices to recognize him.
We also get an indication of another tension between Javert and other officers. Earlier, we saw that he could be reluctant to communicate information to others because he wants to keep credit for his deeds. When chasing Valjean from the Gorbeau House, for instance, he didnât say who he suspected this man was for that reason. Someone else would have been sent if a âdangerousâ criminal were known to be loose. Here, though, the tension is somewhat unknown because Javert doesnât know how the spying aspect of the police works (or at least, he doesnât know all the details). Whether itâs corruption, a recognition that Javert doesnât think, or a combination, other officers seem to be excluding him from such networks. To him, itâs despicable because it blends the line between authority and and crime that his worldview is based on. To other officers, it might be convenient as a way of getting information (although Javert knows more about the area than them).
To return to the ineffectiveness of prison: Brujon communicated so much from there! I find the image of the bread messages a bit funny; I understand that logically, small bits of bread were what was available to hide messages in, but the image is a bit comical. (Bread symbolism makes sense for the same reason, but itâs still funny). But nothing stops the chain of messages. Itâs so effective within a prison, between them (even with gender-based segregation), and outside of them (circulating with Ăponine once freed and with Magnon). All in all, the Gorbeau House may not feel like a triumph to Javert because he didnât catch âenoughâ people, but really, itâs a tragedy because it hurt the vulnerable and did nothing to stop Patron Minette. And the police donât care, likely freeing one of the members.
(Although really, the bread messages might be the most effective part of Patron Minette, if their behavior during the Gorbeau Ambush was anything to go by)

ÂŤEither the fairies or the police had had a hand in it.Âť Must be the fairies⌠Hugo does not openly state that Claquesous was a police agent, and that is why he mysteriously disappeared from police fiacre, but this sentence implies it. Javert is not part of this scheme, he is disappointed (or rather, âirritatedâ), but he must have been aware of such occurrences: âJavert did not accept such comminations, and would have bristled up against such compromises; but his squad included other inspectors besides himself, who were more initiated than he, perhaps, although they were his subordinates in the secrets of the Prefecture, and Claquesous had been such a villain that he might make a very good agent.â Actually, many things irritate Javert after the Gorbeau affair: Montparnasse was not caught, Claquesous was taken by fairies disappeared, the main victim (Jean Valjean) was not arrested, âthat booby of a lawyer,â whose name he has forgotten, was nowhere to be found. A triumph turned into a disaster! Even the fact that Ăponine was ultimately seized did not console him.
We have some prison anthropology here and find out that an elaborate communication system exists between the different prisons of Paris, both male and female. The example of Brujon demonstrates that prison confinement doesnât prevent criminals from plotting crimes outside the prison. âTo be in prison for one crime is no reason for not beginning on another crime. They are artists, who have one picture in the salon, and who toil, nonetheless, on a new work in their studios.â From theatre metaphors, Hugo switched to those connected with art. First, he denies criminals creativity, and then all he does is compares them to some creative professionals! Very logical.
Oh, more COINCIDENCES! Our old acquaintance Magnon (the one who persuaded Gillenormand that he fathered two children with her) ended up assisting Patron Minette. And am I missing something? Do we already know why the house on the Rue Plumet is significant? Or why Brujon and Co are inquiring about it?
I love how Ăponine is presented as a thread that connects different plot lines! She and Azelma are released from the Madelonettes (and probably they have to live on the street), and she was soon sent to check out the house on the Rue Plumet, and returned with a biscuit, indicating that there is nothing of interest there. But Hugo hints that it is not the end of the affair: âThis miscarriage had its consequences, however, which were perfectly distinct from Brujonâs programme. The reader will see what they were.â I hope I will.

Marius booby compilation
if I had a nickel for every time Marius gets called a booby in the Hapgood translation, I'd have four nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened four times.
ThĂŠnardier in 3.8.12
Javert in 4.2.2
Valjean in 4.3.7
Gillenormand in 4.8.7
Four characters with absolutely fuck-all in common somehow manage to put aside their differences and come together in a beautiful show of solidarity on this matter and this matter alone.
In conclusion...

Weâre told that Claquesous is a master of disguise who is impossible to recognize, but Javert recognizes him easily and instantly.
In a following chapter, we find out why: Claquesous is a corrupt spy for the police, and Javert is the only police officer who âbristlesâ at corruption and at collusion with criminals. To me it seems like the implication isnât that Javert magically the only cop capable of recognizing Claquesous; itâs that Javert is just the only one honest enough to admit that he does.
Claquesous isnât actually ~magically impossible for the police to recognize~, heâs just colluding with them.
I think part of why people often miss that Claquesous is a police spy, is because of the way that Victor Hugo often frames his descriptions of characters as âhistorical documents and police reports that Hugo has simply researched and found.â
The police reports say that Claquesous vanished in their custody because of âŚ.Magic, who knows why? It mustâve been âeither fairies or police,â so it was probably fairies! Police would never be corrupt or anything. And the other police are not going to let Javert in on the secret, because Javert cares about âhonestyâ and âavoiding corruptionâ and all that nonsense so he would ruin what theyâre doing. Police legend says that a police identification card was found on Claquesousâs body at the barricade, but who knows? Who knows.
But obviously Claquesous is fictional and all these âambiguous police reportsâ are invented by Hugo, so it reads pretty clearly (to me) that Claquesous is a police spy and the records are âambiguousâ because the police are covering it up.
The novel starts by introducing Patron-Minetteâs affiliates in larger-than-life mythical supernatural ways, the ways a police officer would describe criminals in order to strike terror into peopleâs hearts. Theyâre introduced like theatrical villains in a play. Itâs similar to the theatrical way Javert describes them to Marius later; he talks about them evil villains in a cheap show (âI want to hear them sing and make them dance,â Javert adds.)
Then we actually see the reality of the troupe. And while many of them are dangerous, theyâre ultimately very petty and human. Theyâre not supernatural, theyâre people. Theyâre not the greatest criminal masterminds ever, theyâre defeated by petty bickering as they struggle to escape out a window. Theyâre not shapeshifters, theyâre police spies. They donât succeed in their crimes because of magic, but because they deliberately prey on other more vulnerable people like Jean Valjean who canât cry to the police for help. Arresting them doesnât end in a happily ever after, but with the criminals barely hurt while the vulnerable children around them suffer horribly.
The police arenât noble heroes against Patron-Minette; their efforts fail to do any more than inconvenience them, in some cases theyâre actively colluding with them, and they end up hurting innocent children while the most dangerous members of the gang escape basically unscathed.
Thereâs a compelling contrast between the exaggerated theatrical introductions of Patron-Minette, and the ugly unimpressive messy reality. And âClaquesous the shapeshifterâ vs âClaquesous the police spyâ is one of my favorite examples of that.
#les mis#les mis letters#lm 4.2.2#plus Claquesous is a compelling foil to Javert#heâs the only other major character we see whoâs working for the police in some way#(I mean there are other characters who work *with* the police and lots of unnamed faceless cops)#(but Claquesous is one of the few who literally has a police identification card and also gets any focus)#and thatâs very interesting as a contrast

[oyasufeng] maple haze â§.* a gshade 4.2.2 preset
â
maple haze is a gshade preset that mainly focuses on the theme of autumn, but disabling a few shaders also provides an alternative realistic look.
â
a week after releasing my new preset, i somehow impulsively ended up making another new preset. i initially wanted to release this a month ago but i was shadowbanned (still am, cause support ain't answering me at all). while adding builds based on autumn, i wanted to give a look that accentuates the orange vibe and the season.
i'm living in a country that doesn't have any seasons since childhood â only hot, hotter, haze (thank you, neighbouring country, for burning your bloody forest every year), durian, and monsoon season. so i actually have no idea when each season starts and ends, but coincidentally, it turns out that it's autumn now (it's monsoon season for me sobs).
the primary reason for making this preset is for autumn, but while testing around the shaders since it sometimes appeared too bright, it also gives a realistic look. this would be suitable for both gameplay and screenies!
click below to read more about it and for download links!
important
made on gshade ver 4.2.2, not tested on previous or future ver
since this is a gshade preset, i do not know if this will appear the same on reshade and i couldnât help you with that
disabling some shaders will give you a different look and make it more realistic, it is also advised that you should make some edit to your own liking
may not appear the same as yours because of the changes i made in game files like graphicrules.sgr and the below
lighting mods used in this preset: better in-game lighting mod (bright pale), gentle cas lighting, sunblind
before using any of my presets, please make sure you have read this!!!
if you use any of my presets, consider tagging me, i would love to see how they look like in yours! ă˝(*´âď˝)ĺ

amoebae's summerdream & drift multiluts
â
presets showcase - cas, gameplay & screenies
â
shaders + toggles
regarding tint, it's highly recommended that you adjust the colour in "edit global preprocessor definitions" based on your preference. it is best to test it around, depending on whether you want to use it just for gameplay or screenies. toggling this off will give it a more realistic look but less of the autumn theme.
all three shaders with toggles makes the preset brighter, so toggling off one or two makes it dimmer with different looks. this would also give a realistic look.
â
more showcase
the following shows alternative looks which provides a variety of more realistic looks:
with vs without keepui.fx (optional, can replace it with clear ui of shaders)
with vs without hdr
with vs without tint
with vs without summerdream
with vs without tint & hdr
with vs without tint & summerdream

Do you know what this is? Probably not. But if you follow me and enjoy retro gaming, you REALLY should know about it.
I see all of these new micro consoles, and retro re-imaginings of game consoles and I think to myself "Why?" WHY would you spend a decent chunk of your hard-earned money on some proprietary crap hardware that can only play games for that specific system?? Or even worse, pre-loaded titles and you can't download / add your own to the system!? Yet, people think it's great and that seems to be a very popular way to play their old favorites vs. emulation which requires a "certain degree of tech savvy" (and might be frowned upon from a legal perspective).
So, let me tell you about the Mad Catz M.O.J.O (and I don't think the acronym actually means anything). This came out around the same time as the nVidia Shield and the Ouya - seemingly a "me too" product from a company that is notorious for oddly shaped 3rd party game controllers that you would never personally use, instead reserved exclusively for your visiting friends and / or younger siblings. It's an Android micro console with a quad-core 1.8 GHz nVidia Tegra 4 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage (expandable via SD card), running Android 4.2.2. Nothing amazing here from a hardware perspective - but here's the thing most people overlook - it's running STOCK Android - which means all the bloatware crap that is typically installed on your regular consumer devices, smartphones, etc. isn't consuming critical hardware resources - so you have most of the power available to run what you need. Additionally, you get a GREAT controller (which is surprising given my previous comment about the friend / sibling thing) that is a very familiar format for any retro-age system, but also has the ability to work as a mouse - so basically, the same layout as an Xbox 360 controller + 5 additional programmable buttons which come in very handy if you are emulating. It is super comfortable and well-built - my only negative feedback is that it's a bit on the "clicky" side - not the best for environments where you need to be quiet, otherwise very solid.
Alright now that we've covered the hardware - what can it run? Basically any system from N64 on down will run at full speed (even PSP titles). It can even run an older version of the Dreamcast emulator, Reicast, which actually performs quite well from an FPS standpoint, but the emulation is a bit glitchy. Obviously, Retroarch is the way to go for emulation of most older game systems, but I also run DOSbox and a few standalone emulators which seem to perform better vs. their RetroArch Core equivalents (list below). I won't get into all of the setup / emulation guide nonsense, you can find plenty of walkthroughs on YouTube and elsewhere - but I will tell you from experience - Android is WAY easier to setup for emulation vs. Windows or another OS. And since this is stock Android, there is very little in the way of restrictions to the file system, etc. to manage your setup.
I saved the best for last - and this is truly why you should really check out the M.O.J.O. even if you are remotely curious. Yes, it was discontinued years ago (2019, I think). It has not been getting updates - but even so, it continues to run great, and is extremely reliable and consistent for retro emulation. These sell on eBay, regularly for around $60 BRAND NEW with the controller included. You absolutely can't beat that for a fantastic emulator-ready setup that will play anything from the 90s without skipping a beat. And additional controllers are readily available, new, on eBay as well.
Here's a list of the systems / emulators I run on my setup:
Arcade / MAME4droid (0.139u1) 1.16.5 or FinalBurn Alpha / aFBA 0.2.97.35 (aFBA is better for Neo Geo and CPS2 titles bc it provides GPU-driven hardware acceleration vs. MAME which is CPU only)
NES / FCEUmm (Retroarch)
Game Boy / Emux GB (Retroarch)
SNES / SNES9X (Retroarch)
Game Boy Advance / mGBA (Retroarch)
Genesis / PicoDrive (Retroarch)
Sega CD / PicoDrive (Retroarch)
32X / PicoDrive (Retroarch)
TurboGrafx 16 / Mednafen-Beetle PCE (Retroarch)
Playstation / ePSXe 2.0.16
N64 / Mupen64 Plus AE 2.4.4
Dreamcast / Reicast r7 (newer versions won't run)
PSP / PPSSPP 1.15.4
MS-DOS / DOSBox Turbo + DOSBox Manager
I found an extremely user friendly Front End called Gamesome (image attached). Unfortunately it is no longer listed on Google Play, but you can find the APK posted on the internet to download and install. If you don't want to mess with that, another great, similar Front End that is available via Google Play is called DIG.
If you are someone who enjoys emulation and retro-gaming like me, the M.O.J.O. is a great system and investment that won't disappoint. If you decide to go this route and have questions, DM me and I'll try to help you if I can.
Cheers - Techturd
