5 Moon-landing innovations that changed life on Earth

Much of the technology common in daily life today originates from the drive to put a human being on the Moon. This effort reached its pinnacle when Neil Armstrong stepped off the Eagle landing module onto the lunar surface 50 years ago.

As a NASA airborne astronomy ambassador and director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Manfred Olson Planetarium, I know that the technologies behind weather forecasting, GPS and even smartphones can trace their origins to the race to the Moon.

1. Rockets

October 4, 1957 marked the dawn of the Space Age, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first human-made satellite. The Soviets were the first to make powerful launch vehicles by adapting World War II-era long-range missiles, especially the German V-2.

From there, space propulsion and satellite technology moved fast: Luna 1 escaped the Earth’s gravitational field to fly past the Moon on January 4, 1959; Vostok 1 carried the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into space on April 12, 1961; and Telstar, the first commercial satellite, sent TV signals across the Atlantic Ocean on July 10, 1962.

The 1969 lunar landing also harnessed the expertise of German scientists, such as Wernher von Braun, to send massive payloads into space. The F-1 engines in Saturn V, the Apollo program’s launch vehicle, burned a total of 2,800 tons of fuel at a rate of 12.9 tons per second.

Saturn V still stands as the most powerful rocket ever built, but rockets today are far cheaper to launch. For example, whereas Saturn V cost US$185 million, which translates into over $1 billion in 2019, today’s Falcon Heavy launch costs only $90 million. Those rockets are how satellites, astronauts and other spacecraft get off the Earth’s surface, to continue bringing back information and insights from other worlds.

2. Satellites

The quest for enough thrust to land a man on the Moon led to the building of vehicles powerful enough to launch payloads to heights of 21,200 to 22,600 miles (34,100 to 36,440 km) above the Earth’s surface. At such altitudes, satellites’ orbiting speed aligns with how fast the planet spins – so satellites remain over a fixed point, in what is called geosynchronous orbit. Geosynchronous satellites are responsible for communications, providing both internet connectivity and TV programming.

At the beginning of 2019, there were 4,987 satellites orbiting Earth; in 2018 alone, there were more than 382 orbital launches worldwide. Of the currently operational satellites, approximately 40% of payloads enable communications, 36% observe the Earth, 11% demonstrate technologies, 7% improve navigation and positioning and 6% advance space and earth science.

3. Miniaturization

Space missions – back then and even today – have strict limits on how big and how heavy their equipment can be, because so much energy is required to lift off and achieve orbit. These constraints pushed the space industry to find ways to make smaller and lighter versions of almost everything: Even the walls of the lunar landing module were reduced to the thickness of two sheets of paper.

From the late 1940s to the late 1960s, the weight and energy consumption of electronics was reduced by a factor of several hundred at least – from the 30 tons and 160 kilowatts of the Electric Numerical Integrator and Computer to the 70 pounds and 70 watts of the Apollo guidance computer. This weight difference is equivalent to that between a humpback whale and an armadillo.

Manned missions required more complex systems than earlier, unmanned ones. For example, in 1951, the Universal Automatic Computer was capable of 1,905 instructions per second, whereas the Saturn V’s guidance system performed 12,190 instructions per second. The trend toward nimble electronics has continued, with modern hand-held devices routinely capable of performing instructions 120 million times faster than the guidance system that enabled the liftoff of Apollo 11. The need to miniaturize computers for space exploration in the 1960s motivated the entire industry to design smaller, faster and more energy-efficient computers, which have affected practically every facet of life today, from communications to health and from manufacturing to transportation.

4. Global network of ground stations

Communicating with vehicles and people in space was just as important as getting them up there in the first place. An important breakthrough associated with the 1969 lunar landing was the construction of a global network of ground stations, called the Deep Space Network, to let controllers on Earth communicate constantly with missions in highly elliptical Earth orbits or beyond. This continuity was possible because the ground facilities were placed strategically 120 degrees apart in longitude so that each spacecraft would be in range of one of the ground stations at all times.

Because of the spacecraft’s limited power capacity, large antennas were built on Earth to simulate “big ears” to hear weak messages and to act as “big mouths” to broadcast loud commands. In fact, the Deep Space Network was used to communicate with the astronauts on Apollo 11 and was used to relay the first dramatic TV images of Neil Armstrong stepping onto the Moon. The network was also critical for the survival of the crew on Apollo 13 because they needed guidance from ground personnel without wasting their precious power on communications.

Several dozen missions use the Deep Space Network as part of the continuing exploration of our solar system and beyond. In addition, the Deep Space Network permits communications with satellites that are on highly elliptical orbits, to monitor the poles and deliver radio signals.

5. Looking back at Earth

Getting to space has allowed people to turn their research efforts toward Earth. In August 1959, the unmanned satellite Explorer VI took the first crude photos of Earth from space on a mission researching the upper atmosphere, in preparation for the Apollo program.

Almost a decade later, the crew of Apollo 8 took a famous picture of the Earth rising over the lunar landscape, aptly named “Earthrise.” This image helped people understand our planet as a unique shared world and boosted the environmental movement.

Understanding of our planet’s role in the universe deepened with Voyager 1’s “pale blue dot” photo – an image received by the Deep Space Network.

People and our machines have been taking pictures of the Earth from space ever since. Views of Earth from space guide people both globally and locally. What started in the early 1960s as a U.S. Navy satellite system to track its Polaris submarines to within 600 feet (185 meters) has blossomed into the Global Positioning System network of satellites providing location services worldwide.

Images from a series of Earth-observing satellites called Landsat are used to determine crop health, identify algae blooms and find potential oil deposits. Other uses include identifying which types of forest management are most effective in slowing the spread of wildfires or recognizing global changes such as glacier coverage and urban development.

As we learn more about our own planet and about exoplanets – planets around other stars – we become more aware of how precious our planet is. Efforts to preserve Earth itself may yet find help from fuel cells, another technology from the Apollo program. These storage systems for hydrogen and oxygen in the Apollo Service Module, which contained life-support systems and supplies for the lunar landing missions, generated power and produced potable water for the astronauts. Much cleaner energy sources than traditional combustion engines, fuel cells may play a part in transforming global energy production to fight climate change.

We can only wonder what innovations from the effort to send people to other planets will affect earthlings 50 years after the first Marswalk.

Answering questions...

Received a few questions the other day in an e-mail, thought I’d turn it into an open letter.

As a computer-game music composer, what is your educational background?

A: My background has always been music-based, however at one point in my childhood I wanted to become a comic-book artist or an illustrator. Growing up in a musical family I took piano-lessons from my mother at 5, just to have the basic knowledge of the piano and then I continued following my brothers footsteps. Both of my brothers entered after a “talent-acquisition” spawned from the 3rd grade year of recorder lessons, which allowed them with their special ability to have the chance to enter the Music Academy. I soon followed as well.

I wanted to play drums first, but my father basically said it’ll be too noisy. Then I tried a hand on the electric-bass and fell in love, again my father said that’s going to top the electric bill every month. But somewhere in my father’s mind, he had a plan to create the perfect trifecta, my eldest brother on the trumpet, my middle brother on clarinet and finally me, bridging the sonic space with the saxophone that’s like the perfect mix between woodwind and brass. He got his ensemble together and we performed all over town together with my dad and events throughout the years.

After finishing Junior-high it was time to figure out where I’d go for my college degree, this was a no-brainer for my dad; -You son, will follow your brothers’ ambition and pursue further studies into music at a higher level. You WILL try out to enter the music-college just like your brothers before you.

Again this education was only open for those who possessed the required skill on the instrument, plus additional instrumental skills, in my case keyboards, drums and bass, plus supplementary tests on other fields like listening-ability, notation and rhythm-reading. There were only 30 spots open in total, but the real truth was there was only going to be 2 or 3 students in each course for the desired instrument. Saxophone-players came from all the corners of the province, some people with even higher overall grades than me. This was the charm, I was able to improve my grades through my audition into the program and raised it by 0.5 points, leaving me with a total average of 3.8. Even people with high grade actually could lower their scores if they weren’t performing well. In the end I gained the record in the town until recently when my niece also got through this program as well. What and why would a parent put you through this college? Turns out that once you finish at the Esthetic-program in music a whole world of opportunity awaits when you are applying for universities all over the country.

Turns out that many doctors, professors and teachers in one way or the other had a musical up-bringing which also made them understand psychology better and to be able to make sure people around them could operate under high-pressure (performance comes to mind!), so basically any university except the nature-scientific ones like the Royal University of Science and Chalmer’s were off the books for us to apply. But our options were a lot more available to us then compared to the courses just drone on regular subjects plus 3 years after Junior High.

The next step, where should I go and what should I become? Like any son you asks your father for some kind of permission, and again I just couldn’t believe what my father was pushing me into: - Son, you play a lot of instruments and you compose many kinds of music... you should apply or find a place where you can become a music-producer.

Music-producer? What does a music-producer do? I had to do more research before the 6 months were up to find places to apply to. I looked into the Swedish greats to see if there was anything in interviews that might have revealed where they studied, but it was all a blank. Turns out they were self-taught, did music as a hobby, studied acoustics and all that stuff all by themselves because they were technically civil-engineers. No musical university in sight, the only thing in common we both had was that we went through the Music Academy. The hunt was on to find something on the university level, but it was fruitless. The closest I came was a place up north, above the polar-circle, where you will spend most of your time freezing your balls off in a place called Piteå. They were almost a good fit, but not ideal. You had 2 choices. You either become a session-recording-artist or a sound-engineer. Nothing in between that had anything to do with songwriting or production. Just the 2 essentials. So I could see that I would spend another 3-4 years performing covers with no freedom. Close, but no cigar.

If not on university level, perhaps there was something else on the Community College level? Turns out a lot of companies are working together with certain Community Colleges to find new talents into their jobs. One of the companies were KM Studios, a.k.a Swedish Disney Studio Dubbing Stage. This is it. They had 3 programs, but only 2 that really spoke to me. Music & Computer-technology, and Sound-design. 120 people from all over Sweden wanted to apply and again, we had an initial music-theory test, audition and instrument performances. What was really nice was they were also conducting interviews, just to be sure that “no bad blood” was running around the place making other people feel bad about themselves.

12 spots open, only 10% made it. Turns out I was the youngest to ever enter their program (to my knowledge back then) and there everything changed. 80% of the week we spent in-front of our computers, digging into the DAW, song-writing, keeping up the music-theory skills. Even more amazing that I was the last generation to experience analogue recording, transferring into the digital age. It was amazing to know that we were sitting behind the same mixing-desk that made ABBA’s Waterloo famous. Yes, they had money to buy “Stickan” Andersson’s mixing console, and I had a chance to touch history.

This course was special though, we only had 1 year to go through it, but with a nice caveat. 24hr access to the studio, that meant I could compress 4 years of a university degree into 1 year quickly. I got the necessary skills from pre-production, production and post-production. We knew how to construct a good workflow for music-production. But it was 1 day that was very special. We had 1 instructor (basically the boss of KM Studios) come down one day to talk to us about that we could learn to write music for picture. From that moment on I was hooked on what I wanted to do beside producing music. I wanted to become a film-composer ever since that day in 1999.

I graduated in 2000, took a year off, working as a music-teacher at my Music Academy back home and then I applied for another musical Community College, this time to get more hands on and get my performance chops up with a “Music & Touring Program” that lasted 2 years. This course was incredibly cool since we learnt more about stage preparation, on the spot arranging for a limited set of instruments and then go on tour without any score in front of us. To really study the music until we could learn it by heart just through muscle-memory. Great teachers there and whenever I go back to Sweden to visit, I pop by just to say thank you.

California’s “Clean Cars 4 All” program has already helped many people trade in old, polluting gas cars for subsidies to buy electric cars or hybrid cars.

But thanks to a new bill signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom, vouchers for electric bicycles and bike-sharing programs are now included in the program.

Senate Bill 400, which was authored by Senator Thomas J. Umberg (D-Santa Ana), should now help more Californians access electric bicycles as an alternative to car travel.

As Senator Umberg described:

“Senate Bill 400 helps California reduce our state’s greenhouse gas emissions. E-bikes are proving to be a reliable mobility option for not only replacing car trips, but also more widespread access to clean transportation. As an option within Clean Cars 4 All, e-bikes would help California create a more holistic approach to tackling the issues of pollution and traffic.”

The new law is being heralded by bicycle groups and e-bike fans alike across the Golden State.

California is home to the largest number of electric bicycle riders and e-bike shops in the United States.

As Dave Snyder, Executive Director of the California Bicycle Coalition describes:

“A good quality e-bike is better than a car for most of the local trips that people take, but it’s hard to justify spending several thousand dollars on a bike when you don’t have that kind of money. This program will help Californians make the switch to bikes if they so wish. E-Bikes provide an affordable and cleaner option for local trips that are more fun and healthy, too.”

Yes, this is what we need! I’ve long written about the benefits of commuting by electric bicycle over car. In fact, I’ve gone so far as to say we should increase the legal limit for electric bicycles up to 45 mph (75 km/h) and regulate such fast e-bikes with special driver licenses, which could be easier to obtain than a motorcycle license and further promote commuting on efficient two-wheeled electric vehicles.

I believe programs like this are exactly what the US needs to help it break its addiction to four wheeled cages.

Don’t get me wrong, electric cars are great. They are loads better for the environment than gas-powered cars. But they do almost nothing to help solve traffic issues in most cities, and their overall energy efficiency is limited by the fact that many are still driven by a single occupant. Listen, we don’t always need a 3,000 lb vehicle to drive one person to work or to the store – even if it’s an electric vehicle. In many cases, an energy sipping electric bicycle can perform the same function at a small fraction of the energy consumption. And it can even help the rider get a bit of exercise while doing it (or not, many e-bikes are throttle driven just like a motorbike!)

So I say, “Bravo!” to California for taking action to reduce transportation pollution and urban congestion at the same time. Perhaps more states will follow and the US can finally start to take a page out of the rest of the world’s book regarding the benefits of two-wheeled transportation.

There are lots of different ways you can go on holidays. Hop on a plane to another country, stay in a holiday house a few hours from your home, head to a resort or jump in your car and go camping – we are very fortunate in this country to have a plethora of amazing choices.

Leaving the daily grind behind while you relax and explore is hugely important for your health and sanity! However, the limiting factor for most people is balancing the cost of the holiday and where you go/what you do. Unless you’ve found a tree in your backyard that sprouts dollar bills (please hook me up if you have!), you’ll have to do the finance balance like the rest of us!

A holiday doesn’t have to be expensive

Holidays are usually quite pricey. Or are they? If you decide to have a simple holiday camping, they can become the ultimate economical trip away. In terms of bang for your buck, you won’t find a better holiday than camping – it’s a fantastic way to have an incredible break away without destroying the bank balance.

There are a variety of ways in which you save a fortune by camping as a pose to your alternative holiday options.

Why is camping so much more affordable?

1. Money saved on accommodation

The first, and primary way to save a heap of money by camping is due to the accommodation price difference. You’d struggle to find a cabin anywhere in Australia for under $80 per night, but you can camp for free or low-cost camps in a huge portion of the country.

Most national parks and shire run campgrounds are only $5 – $15 per person, per night. That’s a pretty hefty saving, and even if you throw in a few powered campsites in nice caravan parks at $35 – $50 a night from time to time you still walk away miles in front.

Excluding plane flights, the difference in what you pay each night usually has the greatest effect on making one holiday lower priced than another. There are a number of families travelling around Australia right now on long-term holidays that are spending less than $150 a week on accommodation costs! That’s substantially less than what you’d pay for an average mortgage living at home!

I will quickly mention here that if you are not savvy with where you stay, camping fees can be very expensive. Some caravan parks are easily $100 a night for a family so take your time to find a good value for money campground!

2. Food expenses

When camping, the price of food is fairly similar to what you’d spend at home. You don’t have the luxury of being able to cook hugely fancy meals, so food is simple, quick and easy. You won’t find too many campsites next door to fast food eateries either, meaning your budget for food bought out is dramatically reduced.

Cooking on a gas burner is relatively inexpensive, or if you want a free option (and a fire ban isn’t in place) – there’s nothing better than food cooked over a fire!

Of course, the more remote you go, the more it costs to purchase food, but it still tends to be comparable to food at home.

3. No plane flights

If you’re camping, there’s a pretty good chance it will be done within a relative distance to your home. Flights cost a fair chunk of money, and that’s kept in your back pocket when you stay in your own backyard.

If you want, you can easily fly somewhere with your camping gear and hire a vehicle – in some cases, it’s a similar price to driving your vehicle up.

4. Slower Pace

By nature, when you head away camping everything is done at a slower pace. You need time to set up camp, travel and move around. If you want a cup of tea or coffee, there’s usually no running water or electric kettle – you have to do a bit more work to get it. That’s alright though, as it always tastes better too!

There’s less free time available where you can spend money, and that’s a good thing for your back pocket.

5. You are away from the shops!

If you are camping on an amazing beach on the south coast of WA, there’s a pretty good chance the nearest shops are going to be at least 50 km away. If there’s nowhere to spend your money, it’s going to stay with you!

You pack everything you need, and if you forget something, you do without it. There’s no ducking down to the corner store to pick up odds and ends. The little shops soon add up!

6. Camping is the adventure

There’s something amazing about camping – it’s an adventure in itself. You don’t need to pay for entertainment when you’re camped on a beautiful beach, or next to a gorgeous river. Setting tents up, sleeping under the stars, sitting around a campfire, fishing, exploring the area and appreciating the wildlife is what makes camping such a great experience. As they say – a change is as good as a holiday!

These days most of us live in a concrete jungle that doesn’t change much – just being out in the bush amongst nature is a very welcome change. Australia is one of the most amazing places in the world in terms of things to see and explore, and camping is one of the best ways to get out and see it all.

There is an initial investment

In order to head away camping, you do need some gear. How much you spend, and what you get depends entirely on what you want to do, and how often you’re going to head away. If you’re someone who loves camping, spending a bit of money initially will pay itself back many, many times over.

If you haven’t done much camping before, head away with friends or borrow gear before you commit to spending a heap of money on camping gear. You’ll get an appreciation of what’s actually needed, and some confidence knowing that what you buy is going to get used!

I’ve been camping for as long as I can remember, and have spent a fair bit of money setting our 4WD and camper trailer up, but we would’ve spent a small fortune on our holidays if they hadn’t been based around camping.

How to keep your camping costs down

If you do enjoy going camping as an alternative to different holidays, there are plenty of ways you can reduce the costs of the trip. Camping should be simple and straightforward, and the cost to do it reflects this.

1. Avoid expensive accommodation options

I mentioned above that accommodation costs will be the biggest expense when camping. Taking the time to find economical campgrounds will save you a fortune. Wikicamps is the best way to do this – an $8 app that will change your camping life.

2. Go when it’s not peak season

Travelling outside of school holidays and public holidays will save you a substantial amount of money in caravan park fees. National parks tend not to change, but many campsites will also have a peak and off-peak season with different pricing.

3. Travel slower

The faster you travel, the more it costs. Those who cover a small area over a long period of time do so very economically, as fuel costs are reduced and you actually cover the area properly, as a pose to doing the major (and often expensive) attractions in each place before moving on.

4. Be self-sufficient

If you spend a fair bit of time camping, being self-sufficient will save you huge money. Not having to pay for a powered site, or needing the toilet and shower facilities of a Caravan park can save you hundreds of dollars a week.

Things like water tanks, portable toilets, fridges/eskies and 12V lighting allow you to camp comfortably off the grid, which in turn results in much more affordable campgrounds being available.

5. Buy good quality gear, once

We are all suckers when it comes to a good deal. Don’t compromise on quality though. I’ve been caught out several times buying lower-priced gear and having to replace it not long after. Research the products you buy, get good value for money and a quality product and you’ll have it for years to come.

For some people, living out of a swag 365 days a year would be a dream come true. That doesn’t have to be your dream though, there’s no reason why you can’t split your holidays up. Camping is a fantastic way to have an incredible break on a budget.

Sri Lanka is in shock after a wave of bombings targeting churches and hotels left at least 321 people dead and about 500 injured. Churches were hit during Easter Sunday services in the cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa.

Most of those killed are Sri Lankan nationals, but officials say at least 38 foreigners are among the dead – including British, Indian, Danish, Dutch, Swiss, Spanish, US, Australian and Turkish nationals.

The government temporarily restricted some social media networks to try to halt the spread of misinformation, so details were initially slow to emerge.

But this is what we know so far about those who lost their lives.

Shantha Mayadunne, a Sri Lankan celebrity chef, and her daughter Nisanga

One of the first victims to have been identified was Sri Lankan celebrity chef Shantha Mayadunne.

Her daughter Nisanga Mayadunne had posted a picture of the family having breakfast in the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo shortly before the explosion there.

One of their family members later posted on Facebook confirming that both Shantha and Nisanga had died, saying “no words can describe the pain”.

Rangana Fernando, his wife Danadiri and their three children all died in the attack on St Sebastian’s church in Negombo, north of the capital.

“Farewell Danadiri and family, we will remember you all in our prayers,” read a tribute from her colleagues.

“She was a dedicated and diligent worker, but above all a kind and caring soul. She will be dearly missed.”

The couple’s eldest child Biola (below, third from right) was six, Leona four and Seth just 11 months.

Unicef says at least 45 of those who lost their lives in the attacks were children.

Four Sri Lankan servers at the Cinnamon Grand hotel

Four Sri Lankan staff members at the Taprobane restaurant in the Cinnamon Grand hotel died in the attacks.

“It was a busy morning. It’s Sunday morning during buffet breakfast so it’s one of our busiest periods,” the Cinnamon Grand hotel spokesman told the BBC.

“They were servers at the restaurant. One of them was working at the live food stations making hoppers [a Sri Lankan pancake].”

They have been identified only as Shantha, Sanjeewani, Ibrahim and Nisthar.

Three staff members at the Shangri-La

The Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo announced in a Facebook statement that three of its staff were “fatally injured in the course of their duties”.

No further details are known so far.

A rickshaw driver, his wife and her mother

Tyronne Gulding, 56, went to Easter mass with his wife, Gayani Fernando, and his mother-in-law Mary Anaslyn Silva.

All three died in the blast at St Sebastian’s church in Negombo. A neighbour who was with them and survived says they were standing very close to the person believed to have detonated the bomb, but did not see his face.

Tyronne’s friends say they called him Sana. He drove an auto-rickshaw and ran his business from outside Negombo hospital. His wife was unemployed and mostly took care of her mother and 18-year-old son.

He did not attend the mass with them as he had gone for midnight vigil the previous night.

Asos billionaire’s children

Three children of Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen died in the attacks, a spokesman has confirmed to the BBC. The company was unable to reveal any more details at this time and asked for the family’s privacy to be respected.

One of his children had four days ago posted a picture on Instagram that was geo-tagged Sri Lanka.

Mr Povlsen, 46, owns the Bestseller clothing chain and is the largest stakeholder in the hugely popular online retailer Asos.

Eight British nationals

The deaths of eight Britons were confirmed by the UK’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, James Dauris.

Three members of one family were among the victims.

Anita Nicolson, her 14-year-old son Alex and 11-year-old daughter Annabel were killed in the restaurant of the Shangri-La Hotel.

Her husband, Ben Nicholson, who survived, paid tribute to his “wonderful, perfect wife” and “amazing children” who “shared with their mother the priceless ability to light up any room they entered”.

Brother and sister Daniel and Amelie Linsey, 19 and 15, who were at college and school in London, also died while on holiday. Their father has described his attempts to save their lives.

Two other Britons who have been named include former firefighter Bill Harrop and his wife, Dr Sally Bradley, from Manchester, who had been living in Australia and were also on holiday. They were described as “soulmates” and much-loved and respected colleagues.

Ten Indians, including seven from a political party

Ten Indian nationals, some of whom were political party workers from Bangalore, died in the bombings at the Shangri-La.

The party workers have been identified as KG Hanumantharayappa, M Rangappa, KM Laxminarayan, Lakshmana Gowda Ramesh, H Shivakumar, A Maregowda and H Puttaraju. They were all members of the Janata Dal Secular (JDS).

The JDS workers were on holiday in Sri Lanka after polling for the Indian general elections ended in the state on 18 April.

The chief minister of the Indian state of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswami said in a tweet that he had known some of the party workers personally, adding that he was “deeply pained”.

The Indian High Commission also identified two more Indian nationals as Vemurai Tulsiram and SR Nagaraj.

Another Indian, Razeena Khader Kukkady was killed in the same blast.

The 58-year-old, who was originally from Kerala, lived in Dubai with her husband but travelled to Colombo to meet her relatives.

He left for Dubai on Sunday morning and she was due to leave Colombo on a later flight on the same day.

“He had left by the morning flight and she had finished her breakfast when the blast took place. We are all in a state of shock,” Usman Kukkady, her brother-in-law, told BBC Hindi.

Turkish engineers Serhan Selcuk Narici and Yigit Ali Cavus

Two Turkish nationals were killed, state news agency Anadolu reported.

Engineer Serhan Selcuk Narici moved to Colombo in March 2017, according to his Facebook profile.

His father, Baba Memhet Narici, told Anadolu that his son was an electrical engineer. He had last been doing some work at the US embassy building in Sri Lanka.

“He sent me a WhatsApp message this morning at 5am saying ‘Good Morning'”, said Mr Narici. “That was the last I heard from him.”

The other victim – Yigit Ali Cavus – was also an engineer.

“He was a brilliant child. He graduated with honours from the Istanbul Technical University and spoke two languages,” said his father.

It is not yet clear where they were when the attacks took place.

An Australian mother and her 10-year-old daughter were killed during the Easter Sunday service at St Sebastian Church, in Negombo city.

Manik Suriaaratchi and daughter Alexandria attended the church every Sunday, along with her husband Sudesh Kolonne. He had just walked out of church ahead of them when the bomb went off.

“I heard a huge noise… I saw my daughter on the floor and I tried to lift her up, [but] she was already dead. And [then]… next my wife is there,” Mr Kolonne told ABC news.

The family had moved from Melbourne to Sri Lanka in 2014 after Ms Suriaaratchi started a business in the country.

The grandson of a Bangladeshi politician

The grandson of Bangladeshi MP Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim was killed in the attacks.

Mr Selim’s grandson – who is himself a prominent member of the Awami League political party – died in an explosion in the hotel where the family was staying, according to local media reports. It is not clear which hotel this was.

Mr Selim’s personal assistant told the Dhaka Tribune that the boy’s father was also injured in the blast.

Rui Lucas, Portuguese electrical engineer

Rui Lucas was on honeymoon with his wife, Portuguese media report. They had been married just over a week.

Mr Lucas, believed to be in his early 30s, died in the attack on the Kingsbury Hotel, where the newlyweds were staying. His wife survived the attack.

He has been described by one of his colleagues as “a person with a huge heart, a great friend”, Portugal’s publico.pt website reports.

Monique Allen, Dutch national

Monique Allen was on holiday with her three sons and husband Lewis when the Cinnamon Grand hotel was bombed.

She was having breakfast downstairs with one of her sons. Her husband and two of her other sons were in their room. The rest of her family members survived the attack.

“My son and my wife were sitting right next to each other [when] the explosion happened,” Mr Allen told the BBC.

“[He] blacked out for a few minutes and he woke up and saw his mother with a big head wound and lots of blood.”

Mr Lewis found his son injured at his hospital and only later found his wife when he checked the mortuary.

“[At the mortuary] they were pulling back sheet after sheet. I was praying let that not be Monique,” he said.

“Then they lifted the sheet on one and that was my wife there… she was the best wife and the best mother.”

Sri Lanka faces scrutiny over bomb warnings

Two other Dutch nationals also died – a woman aged 48 and her daughter aged 12 who had dual nationality, reports say. It is not clear where they were killed.

Kaori Takahashi, mother of two

Ms Takahashi, 39, had been living in Sri Lanka with her husband and two young children.

He is a chef in the city and the family were having breakfast at one of the hotels targeted. Her husband is among four Japanese citizens injured in the blasts, officials say.

The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported Ms Takahashi had been due to return to Japan in May.

Dieter Kowalski from the US state of Colorado

Forty-year-old Dieter Kowalski, a Denver resident, was in Sri Lanka on a work trip. On Friday, he had posted on Facebook: “And the fun begins. Love these work trips. 24 hours of flying. See you soon Sri Lanka!”

Mr Kowalski worked for Pearson, an education management company, as a senior technical operations lead. The company confirmed to NBC News on Monday that Mr Kowalski had been killed shortly after he arrived at the Cinnamon Grand hotel.

“Colleagues who knew Dieter well talk about how much fun he was to be around, how big-hearted and full-spirited he was,” Pearson chief executive John Fallon wrote in a letter to employees.

Mr Kowalski’s brother, Derrick, also shared on Facebook: “We have all lost a brother today.”

The US Department of State has confirmed at least four Americans were killed in the blasts.

A Washington DC elementary school student

Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, a fifth grade student at the prestigious Sidwell Friends school in Washington, was another American killed.

Kieran had been on leave for the year in Sri Lanka, the Washington Post reported.

“Kieran was passionate about learning, he adored his friends, and he was incredibly excited about returning to Sidwell Friends this coming school year,” the school said in a letter to families.

Two Saudi nationals

The Saudi embassy in Sri Lanka named two citizens who were killed in the bomb attacks but gave few other details.In a Twitter post on 23 April, the embassy named the two victims as Ahmed Zain al-Jaafari and Hani Majed Othman.The embassy offered its prayers for the victims and their families and to the government and people of Sri Lanka.Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s national airline said two of its crew members were unaccounted for, and that one had been admitted to hospital with minor injuries.

The statement did not mention the nationalities of the missing and injured or where they were at the time of the blasts. Other reports said the crew members had been staying at the Cinnamon Grand hotel at the time of the attacks.

A Spanish couple

Two Spaniards from Galicia lost their lives. Maria Gonzalez Vicente, 32, was visiting her boyfriend, Alberto Chaves, 31, who was working for a frozen food firm in India and was on holiday at the Kingsbury hotel in Colombo.

Two Swiss nationals

Switzerland said two of its citizens, one with dual nationality, had died in the attacks.

It did not name them or say in which of the blasts they died.

One Chinese national

China’s embassy said one Chinese national had been killed, five others were wounded and five were missing after the attacks.

The Make in India Initiative and Opportunities in the Post-Covid-19 World

1.0 The Covid-19 besides unsettling and plunging the world in unprecedented severe economic crisis has also thrown up a universe of opportunities for India, specifically for those enterprises who wish to be a part of the India growth story. The unreliability of the Chinese Political System in not warning the world in time about the impending pandemic threat and its unscrupulous attempts to exploit the economic meltdown to entrench its strategic and economic interest has shaken the confidence of the world in China as a reliable trade/ economic ally. The world has started looking to other destinations to keep the global economic engine moving with India emerging as a key potential destination.

2.0 However, to be a part of the India growth story its important to understand and engage with regulatory environments of India, while understanding the India growth story.

3.0 Thus far participation of India in the global economy has risen and is high, in terms of GDP, trade, etc. India has developed know-how and succeeded in exporting a huge basket of goods and services to a large number of countries. It has specialised in sectors which will likely to be in high demand in the near future e.g., information, communication and technology (ICT) services, pharmaceuticals and medical devices etc. The government aims at getting India even more and better integrated into the global economy, the objectives are to double India’s share of world trade, to makes India a hub for global value chain under the make in India flagship; to boost foreign investment inflows by modernizing regulations and to attract more savings from Indians living abroad.

The imposition of US tariffs on Chinese products world accelerate the rejigging of value chains. Preliminary data suggests that India has seized some of the market shares lost by China, with more success in capital and skill intensive industries than in labour intensive ones. Smart policy making has also led to enablement and success of India industry. For instance the ICT sector has been able to function under the Shop and Establishment Act and hence was not subject to the 45 labour laws which apply to industries.

4.0 Addressing domestic bottlenecks; infrastructure and business environment :-

The 2014 OECD Economic Survey of India (OECD, 2014) concluded that manufacturing, for which the production process tends to be more fragmented than for services, suffered most from tax cascading – taxes were levied on each successive transfer, inclusive of any previous tax being levied, as indirect taxes levied on inputs were not creditable from indirect taxes levied on outputs. The Goods and Services Tax (GST), by allowing firms to deduct taxes on inputs, is a clear improvement for the manufacturing sector when implementation costs will disappear.

4.1 Infrastructure bottlenecks have lessened:

The quality of infrastructure is a key determinant of countries’ participation in global value chains . As exports of goods tend to be more intensive in energy and transport than services, they suffer more from infrastructure bottlenecks.

Electricity : India has made significant progress in increasing electricity generation and transmission capacities, in particular from renewable sources, to fulfil its commitment to provide electricity for all. Total generation increased from 1000 TWh in 2010 to 1600 TWh in 2017, making India the third-largest electricity market in the world (IEA, 2018). In 2018, electricity reached every village and the government aims to provide electricity for all by 2019.

Ports : Container traffic at Indian ports is increasing rapidly. The Sagarmala programme launched in 2015 aims at modernising and developing ports, enhancing port connectivity, supporting coastal communities and stimulating port-linked industrialisation. The government also aims at improving infrastructure effectiveness, reducing the turnaround time at major ports from about 3.4 days in 2018 to the global average of 1-2 days by 2022-23 (NITI Aayog, 2018). The Sagarmala programme, launched in 2015 for the period to 2025, aims at reducing logistic costs – both direct costs and inventory handling costs – for foreign and domestic trade by developing and rehabilitating ports. It also aims at doubling the share of water transportation in the modal mix, since it is more cost-effective and emits less greenhouse gas than road and railway transport (FICCI, 2018). More than 605 projects have been identified by the government under the Sagarmala initiative, with a budget of INR 8.8 trillion (about 5.1% of FY 2018/19 GDP). As of 2018, 89 projects were completed and 443 were under various stages of implementation and development.

Turnaround time at major ports has reduced from 107 hours in FY 2011-12 to close to 60 hours in the first seven months of FY 2018/19.Measures to improve the ease of trading across borders have been taken, including the replacement of manual forms with e-filing, e-delivery and e-payment for shipping lines and agents, and a reduction in charges for non-peak hours at ports. The government has also abolished restrictive cabotage rules that prevented foreign ships from transporting containers between Indian ports.

Major Ports are being made more competitive in this regard , the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2020 was introduced in Lok Sabha . The Bill seeks to provide for regulation, operation and planning of major ports in India and provide greater autonomy to these ports. It seeks to replace the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. Key features of the Bill include Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects. The Bill defines PPP projects as projects taken up through a concession contract by the Board. For such projects, the Board may fix the tariff for the initial bidding purposes. The appointed concessionaire will be free to fix the actual tariffs based on market conditions, and other conditions as may be notified. The revenue share in such projects will be on the basis of the specific concession agreement.

Roads : The Bharatmala programme, launched in 2017 for a five-year period, aims at developing 83 677 km of roads, including economic corridors to strengthen links between manufacturing centres and export hubs. Roads account for the lions share in inland freight transport. The overall cost of the programme was estimated at INR 6.9 trillion (4% of FY2018/19 GDP). The programme relies partly on public-private partnerships, in particular for highways. As of February 2019, 137 road projects with an aggregate length of 6 530 km had been awarded and were in various implementation stages.

Labour regulations: Various measures have been taken to make labour regulations and institutions friendlier to job creation (OECD, 2019). Taking into account the COVID -19 pandemic many State Govt., have suspended the application of most of the labour laws for a considerable duration for instance UP has done so for three years ,Gujarat has also taken similar measures.

5.0 Reform Momentum : To keep up the reform momentum and speed up the dispatching of manufacturing exports, the government has proposed the creation of Coastal Employment Zones. Tax benefits linked to employment creation would add to existing incentives for Special Economic Zones. Coastal Zones are also likely to relax labour regulations. As of March 2019, 14 Coastal Zones have been proposed and plans were being developed for four pilot ones in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.

5.1 Proposed Coastal Employment Zones: In its Three Year Action Plan 2017/18 to 2019/20, the government (NITI Aayog) suggested the creation of two Coastal Employment Zones, one on the east coast and the other on the west coast, to capture agglomeration effects and attract large multinational firms leaving China because of rising labour costs.

The main features of the proposed zones would be:

–Large areas (i.e. larger than existing special economic zones) with flexible land conversion rules. Coastal zones are to be spread over 500 km2 or more and include existing habitations and industry structures. They will have sufficiently flexible land conversion rules to permit the conversion of these habitations and structures into alternative uses over time as industrialisation proceeds.

-Flexibility in the Floor Space Index would also be granted.

– More liberal and business-friendly regulations. Coastal zones should have liberal labour laws, as is currently the case in Gujarats Special Economic Zones. -They may also have more liberal land acquisition rules (as done in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat).

-Tax breaks for new firms creating many jobs. For new firms and firms creating many jobs, government financial support could be envisaged in the form of an upfront benefit for firms, in contrast to the existing tax relief that firms can only benefit from once they become profitable.

-Proximity to deep draft ports.

– Public investment on infrastructure. The central government may commit to investing up to INR 50 billion (0.03% of FY 2018 GDP) in each coastal zone to meet the infrastructure and housing needs.

– Trade facilitation and trade liberalisation. Clearance time for imports and exports will be reduced to international levels within the zones.

5.2 Trade Facilitation : India has launched the National Trade Facilitation Action Plan for 2017-2020, after ratifying the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement in 2016. This plan aims at increasing the efficiency of cross-border trade by reducing border and documentary compliance time, permitting exporters to electronically seal their containers at their own facilities, and reducing physical inspections. The Plan foresees a decline in dwell time for imports to within three days for sea cargo, within two days for air cargo and on the same day for land customs. For exports, the aim is to reach below two days for sea cargo and on same-day for air cargo. Implementing the governments Plan, including the Indian Customs Single Window Project, will facilitate trade.

5.3 FDI Norms : India has recently taken steps towards more competitive services by raising or eliminating limits on foreign equity in civil aviation, cable and satellite broadcasting and the insurance sector and allowing for foreign branches for reinsurance activities. For single-brand retail trade, India has eased local sourcing requirements in 2019 by relaxing the definition of goods subject to the 30% local sourcing requirement. Single-brand retailers will also be allowed to open online stores before setting up brick-and-mortar ones (not more than two years after). India has liberalised its FDI policy in many sectors over the past two decades. Since 2014, India has been a top reformer: caps on foreign participation have been raised and more sectors have been brought under the automatic route, avoiding the administrative burden associated with the government approval route. The opening was most ambitious in the air, real estate and retail distribution sectors. In 2017, the Foreign Investment Promotion Board was abolished and the government approval system was simplified and decentralised –concerned ministries are now invited to accept or reject FDI projects within a shorter timeframe (8-10 weeks). Overall, the OECD FDI Restrictiveness Index suggests that in 2018 India was more open than several other EMEs, including China, Indonesia and Malaysia. While global FDI flows declined three years in a row to 2018, FDI inflows to India as a share of GDP have remained relatively robust.

The government aims at making India a more attractive FDI destination. FDI restrictions in single-brand retail, digital media, contract manufacturing and coal sector were loosened in August 2019. Local sourcing norms for single-brand retail FDI have been softened. In presenting its Budget for FY 2019-20, the government indicated that further reforms are likely, including in the insurance, aviation and media sectors.

5.4 FTAs: India has used preferential trade agreements as a key component of its trade and foreign policy, especially since the early 2000s. It has concluded bilateral agreements with several Asian countries (including South Korea in 2009 and Japan in 2011). It is party to various regional trade agreements, including the SAFTA, the Asia Pacific Trade Agreement, and the ASEAN.

6.1 Policy And Implementation Framework For The Make In India Initiative : The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) drives the efforts in this direction and has come up with a road map for the largest manufacturing initiative undertaken by a nation in recent history. In a short space of time, the obsolete and obstructive frameworks of the past have been dismantled and replaced with a transparent and user-friendly system. This is helping drive investment, fostering innovation, developing skills, protecting Intellectual Property (IP) and building best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure.

7.1 Make In India Campaign Main Focus Areas : Make in India initiative has made significant achievements and has been reviewed now, focusing on 27 sectors – 15 manufacturing sectors and 12 champion service sectors under Make in India 2.0 programme. The Department for Promotionof Industry and Internal Trade is coordinating action plans for 15 manufacturing sectors, while Department of Commerce is coordinating action plan for 12 service sectors. The revised list of the 27 Sectors are as follows:

Florida Panhandle battered by record-breaking Hurricane Michael

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Reuters) – Hurricane Michael, the fiercest storm to hit Florida in more than 80 years and the third-most powerful ever to strike the U.S. mainland, battered the state’s Gulf coast on Wednesday with roof-shredding winds, raging surf and torrential rains.

Michael, whose rapid intensification as it churned north over the Gulf of Mexico caught many by surprise, made landfall early in the afternoon near Mexico Beach, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Panama City in Florida’s Panhandle region, with top sustained winds reaching 155 miles per hour (249 kph).

The storm came ashore as a Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson wind scale, the biggest storm on record to strike by Florida Panhandle. Its sustained winds were just 2 mph (3.2 kph) shy of an extremely rare Category 5.

The storm’s intensity waned steadily as it pushed inland and curled northeasterly into Georgia after dark. It was downgraded to a Category 1 storm, with top sustained winds diminishing to 75 miles per hour (120 kph), about nine hours after it made landfall.

The governors of North and South Carolina urged residents to brace for more heavy rain and storm-force winds as Michael plows northward up the Atlantic seaboard. The Carolinas are still reeling from severe flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence less than a month ago.

The National Hurricane Center said Michael would pass through the Carolinas as a tropical storm on Thursday, dumping as much as 8 inches of rain in some areas. Up to a foot (30 cm) of rain was forecast in Florida.

Gadsden County sheriff’s spokeswoman Anglie Hightower said a “male subject” was killed by a tree toppling onto his house in Greensboro, Florida, in the first fatality related to the hurricane.

Severe flooding, structural building damage, uprooted trees and downed power lines appeared widespread in coastal areas near where the storm made landfall.

A video posted on Twitter showed winds ripping apart a house on Mexico Beach, its debris washing up to adjacent properties. Governor Rick Scott said there was a “lot of roof damage” in the storm’s path.

Bill Manning, a 63-year-old grocery clerk, fled his camper van in Panama City for safer quarters in a hotel only to see the electricity there go out.

“My God, it’s scary. I didn’t expect all this,” he said.

Without power, the city was plunged into darkness at nightfall and its flooded streets were mostly silent and devoid of people or traffic.

By Wednesday night, more than 403,000 homes and businesses were without electricity in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, utility companies said.

Television news footage earlier in the day showed floodwaters up to the roofs of many homes in Mexico Beach. The fate of about 280 residents who authorities said defied evacuation orders was unknown.

‘ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE’

Twenty miles to the south, floodwaters were more than 7-1/2 feet (2.3 meters) deep near Apalachicola, a town of about 2,300 residents, hurricane center chief Ken Graham said. Wind damage was also evident.

“There are so many downed power lines and trees that it’s almost impossible to get through the city,” Apalachicola Mayor Van Johnson said.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on Tuesday an estimated 500,000 Florida residents had been ordered or urged to seek higher ground before the storm in 20 counties spanning a 200-mile (320-km) stretch of shoreline.

But Brad Kieserman of the American Red Cross said on Wednesday as many as 320,000 people on Florida’s Gulf Coast had disregarded evacuation notices.

An estimated 6,000 evacuees took cover in emergency shelters, most of them in Florida, and that number was expected to swell to 20,000 across five states by week’s end, Kieserman said.

Bo Patterson, the mayor of Port St. Joe, just south of Mexico Beach, rode out the storm in his house seven blocks from the beach.

“It feels like you don’t know when the next tree is going to fall on top of you because its blowing so ferociously,” he said by telephone. “It’s very, very scary. We have trees being uprooted, heavy, heavy rain.”

Patterson was one of about 2,500 of the town’s 3,500 residents who ended up staying put, many of them caught off guard by the storm’s rapid escalation as it approached. “This happened so quickly,” he said.

FEMA head Brock Long acknowledged that early evacuation efforts in the area were slow in comparison to how quickly the hurricane intensified. Michael grew from a tropical storm into a Category 4 hurricane over the course of about 40 hours.

“Satellite images of Michael’s evolution on Tuesday night were, in a word, jaw-dropping,” wrote Bob Henson, a meteorologist with weather site Weather Underground.

With a low barometric pressure recorded at 919 millibars, the measure of a hurricane’s force, Michael ranked as the third-strongest storm on record to make landfall in the continental United States. Only Hurricane Camille on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969 and the so-called Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys were more intense.

President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for all of Florida, freeing up federal assistance to supplement state and local disaster responses.

About 3,500 Florida National Guard troops were deployed to assist with evacuations and storm recovery, along with more than 1,000 search-and-rescue personnel, Scott said.

The Pentagon said it had pre-positioned more than 2,200 active-duty military personnel, along with helicopters, high-water vehicles and swift-water boats for deployment as needed.

The palace gets 25 lakhs (2.5 million) visitors a year. In September 2010 the Mysore Palace Board decided to replace 650 bulbs with Light-Emitting Diodes (LED), which not only consume less power but emits less heat too. The monthly electricity bill will reduce by Rs 150,000 (20,000 power units).

Mysore palace is one of the largest palace in the country. Having various rooms that are nonpareil in construction, there are many events that too make this palace a unique attraction. The hall for the private (Diwan-e-khas) is the most spectacular room. Enter through the opulent doorway that is made of caved rosewood. The central knave of the hall has ornately gilded columns, stained glass ceilings, decorative steel grills, and chandeliers with fine floral motifs, mirrored in the pietra dura mosaic floor embellished with semi-precious stones. Then there is the Doll’s pavillion (Gombe Thotti), that is a gallery of traditional dolls. The Kalyana Mantapa is a grand room of whom the entire structure was wrought in Glasgow, Scotland. The palace also houses 12 Hindu temples.

The palace is a three-storied complex about 245feet in length and 156 in breadth. A gold-plated dome raised up to the height of 145 feet nestles on a wide-open yard in the center of the palace. There are also series of square towers with arches covered by domes. The main gateway to the palace is ‘Gombe Thotti’ or the Doll’s Pavilion. The gate is bedecked with flowery designs, and bears the Mysore royal symbol of a double headed eagle.

To the north of the gate are dolls, dating from the earlier nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a triumphal wooden elephant. A royal seat on top of the elephants is festooned with 84 kilogram of 24 carat gold and other souvenirs.

To the south, the magnificent ‘Kalyana Mantapa’ decorated by multi-colored glass with peacock motifs compiled in geometrical patterns and ravishing chandeliers is another breathing site. The floor is laid with colorful translucent tiles brought from England in elegant geometrical patterns and the walls of the palace, embellished with most beautiful oil paintings depicting Dusshera celebrations of the bygone royal era.

The fort housing the ‘Diwan-I-am’ Durbar Hall, ‘Ambavilas’ or Diwan-e-khas used as a hall for private audience are beautifully decorated with magnificently carved doors at the entrance. There are twelve temples within the compound wall of palace, constructed in typical Dravidian style including the Varashaswamy Temple

The palace now has been converted into a museum under the administration of the Department of Archaeology and Museums of the Karnataka Government.

The museum houses the royal paintings and portraits of the rajas and maharajas of Mysore. Royal jewelry and royal costumes, all are displayed on the ground floor. There is also collection of arms and weapons on the upper floor.

The museum also treasures the largest collection of gold items, almost 200kg gold royal throne of the Wodeyars is displayed for public viewing during the Dussera festival. . Best time to go

As such Mysore enjoys the pleasant weather but in summers the city too become hot and humid. The best time to visit the city is during Dussehra Festival in October. Dussehra also heralds the start of the tourist season, which adds to its suitability as a time to visit the city.

How to get there

By Air

The nearest international airport is Bangalore airport near Devanahalli (170km from Mysore) [2]. Mysore Airport [3] (MYQ) Mysore Airport, which is nearly 12 kilometers from the city, was inaugurated on May 15, 2010. Being Domestic Airport It is operational now. Kingfisher operates daily flights from Mysore. There is one stop connecting flights from Mysore to Other key cities like Chennai, Goa, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune etc.

By Train

Mysore Junction is the city’s main station, and there are daily trains plying the route to Bangalore. The fastest and possibly the most comfortable way to travel between Mysore and Chennai is by the Shatabdi Express, which covers the Mysore-Bangalore leg of the journey in 2 hours and the Mysore-Chennai section in 7 hours. Although more expensive than other trains, all the Shatabdi’s coaches are air-conditioned and meals, snacks and a bottle of mineral water are included in the cost of the fare.

There are many trains available from Mysore to Bangalore and vice versa. Tippu Express being the most popular one which covers the distance of 140 km in about 2.5 hours. Tippu Express leaves Mysore at 11AM and reaches Bangalore by 1:30PM and leaves Bangalore at 3PM and reaches Mysore at 5:30PM.

By bus

Buses run every 5 minutes from Bangalore. There is a choice of airconditioned and ordinary vehicles. During the weekends, these buses can fill up, but most do not allow you to purchase your tickets in advance. However, buses to Mysore board constantly so finding a bus with seats is never a problem. The KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) buses are very comfortable, especially the Volvo (Luxury) buses. A one-way ticket from Bangalore to Mysore costs 250 Indian Rupees. One can get a bus for Mysore from the main city bus stand (Majestic) or the sattelite bus terminus on Mysore road. Mysore has two major bus stands. All KSRTC buses arrive and depart from the Central bus stand (aka sub-urb bus stand), while local buses use the City bus stand.

By car

Mysore is approximately 140 km from Bangalore, and there is a 4 lane highway (2 lanes in each direction) connecting the 2 cities. The traffic is fairly heavy but the drive is extremely comfortable if you discount the unmarked speed bumps that show up at random intervals. Probably a much easier and more comfortable way to travel to Mysore is by train (especially the Shatabdi Express – 2:15hrs). You drive through in SH-17 via Ramnagar-Mandya and takes about 2 hrs to leave Bangalore and 2 more hrs on the highway

You don’t really need a car and driver to drive you from Bangalore or other desinations in India, as all the tourist sites are walking distance or a cheap ride by rickshaw. Alternatively if you must have a car and driver while there, it is very easy to arrange once you arrive.

Why is camping so much more affordable?

2. Food expenses

Cooking on a gas burner is relatively inexpensive, or if you want a free option (and a fire ban isn’t in place) – there’s nothing better than food cooked over a fire!

Of course, the more remote you go, the more it costs to purchase food, but it still tends to be comparable to food at home.

3. No plane flights

If you want, you can easily fly somewhere with your camping gear and hire a vehicle – in some cases, it’s a similar price to driving your vehicle up.

4. Slower Pace

There’s less free time available where you can spend money, and that’s a good thing for your back pocket.

5. You are away from the shops!

You pack everything you need, and if you forget something, you do without it. There’s no ducking down to the corner store to pick up odds and ends. The little shops soon add up!

4. Be self-sufficient

Things like water tanks, portable toilets, fridges/eskies and 12V lighting allow you to camp comfortably off the grid, which in turn results in much more affordable campgrounds being available.

5. Buy good quality gear, once
