random movie every week week 4/1498 - Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
hello, i have a lot of movies and i have not seen that many of them. so every week i will watch a movie at random, and then wright a little blog about it and give it a rating out of 5 stars Previous Posts, Chronologically: google doc link
THE RULES
i can skip any marvel movie i want (because i have seen them and i don't want to watch them again)
i can skip any movie i have seen more than twice (the goal is to watch movies that are new to me, but could be interesting to return to a movie i have only seen once, hence the rule)
ratings are out of 5 stars, with NO HALF STARS. half stars are for babies
If a film is part of a series, i reserve the right to start the film series from the beginning HERE WE GO
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
i did roll another Indiana Jones film but i instead opted to watch the first movie of the series. i have never seen any of these films!
Raiders of the Lost Ark is about a professor of Archaeology, Indiana Jones, who is hired to find an ancient artifact before the Nazis get it. And then after a back and forth and some perils, the treasure they wanted haunts all the nazis and they all die and they're faces melt off.
i can see how if you were like, 10-16 years old in 1981 and you got to go see Raiders in a theater it was probably a blast. it has some real peak summer blockbuster energy and action. as for me, being in my mid 30's and it being 2023 and i am sitting at home, and everything is different now, i found the story and the characters feeling pretty empty. and overall it was not really ~that~ enjoyable. sort of fun, mostly mindless, pretty unoffensive.
ROTLA has the energy of a hong kong cinema film without any of the charm or skill of those kung fu movies, so the action sequences feel pretty empty. the latter half of the film has a little more tension as indy and marion are trying to escape from the tomb and everything. but as action movies go it falls beneath even like many james bond films in terms of the feeling and fun of the action.
the central tension of the film is like 'well certainly the nazis shouldn't have artifact' and while i agree, it's not really compelling that Indy wants the artifact either, when his aim is to put it into a museum. it reads pretty strangely in a time when i am questioning the legitimacy of foreign artifacts in white owned museums. Indy is not even trying to get the artifact for an Egyptian museum. so for me it doesn't really matter other than a devil you know vs. the devil who are nazis type situation.
and the ending, even tho it included nazis dying, didn't really feel earned? they died of their own hubris sure but like that wasn't Indiana Jones melting nazi faces. in a movie that was otherwise 'straight' (read; no magical stuff happening) to just have at the end some magical shit happen doesn't sit well with me
maybe i should have turned my brain off more, but i felt it was pretty off throughout the movie so i'm not sure what else i could to enjoy it more other than pay less attention, which for a series of reviews like these is not really an option.
i give Raiders of the Lost Ark a 2/5. i bet gen x dads are obsessed with it but i am not them, and it really didn't do anything for me.
as always my during the film notes as a screenshot are here:

Fatih Ergin.

Kaldı ki Türk gençleri yurtdışında okuyamıyorlar. Kabulü ve davetiyesi olsa da vize alamıyorlar. ~ FOUR MONTHS EARLIER ~
It felt as though you’d been asleep for days, but no matter how much you slept, your body was still tired. At this point, you pretty much only got up to use the bathroom. You couldn’t remember the last time you’d showered.
There was no point to any of it. Eddie was dead. Hawkins was in pieces. Your friends were just as broken and traumatised as you were. It’s not that you wanted to die, but you didn’t want to have to live anymore either.
Your door opened. Your mother knocked while she was still opening it, so you wouldn’t have had a chance to react if you’d tried. When she took in your state, she put her hands on her hips. It was a motion that reminded you of Steve, but it wasn’t half so charming when she did it.
“You’re still in bed,” she said curtly.
“Feel sick,” you said. It was only half a lie. You felt physically awful, but not the kind of sick that sleep could chase away.
She let out a deep sigh – the kind that made your stomach twist and turn unpleasantly – and sat down at the edge of your bed. You tensed as she brushed your hair out of your face.
“It’s such a shame to see you wasting your life like this,” she said, faux-sympathetically. “You’d be pretty if you weren’t so lazy. And you’ve put on a few pounds, too.”
A year ago, this would’ve led to a fight. You’d had all manner of screaming matches with your mother. But right now, you couldn’t even muster a glare. You felt totally numb.
“Mom,” Steve’s voice from the doorway made her turn her head. He had a stern look on his face. “You’re not helping.”
She threw up her hands. “Of course not. I’m a terrible mother, after all.”
Steve grimaced. “I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t need to.”
You pressed your face into your pillow as they argued. To his credit, Steve seemed to have successfully pulled her away from berating you.
Your parents had been home for a week. It was the longest period of time they’d been home in years, and it was hell. You hadn’t had the most stable relationship with them before the Upside Down had come and torn your lives apart, but now there was a gulf between you and them that you doubted would ever close.
Steve, at least, understood. He’d been by your side as your world had come crashing down. He had seen the things you’d seen. If you wanted to talk about it – which you didn’t – you knew that he would be there.
You felt rather than heard your mother getting up to leave. She and Steve were still arguing. She slammed your bedroom door, which jolted you out of the doze you had been slipping into.
You frowned. As awful as she’d been about it, she wasn’t wrong. You rolled out of bed and padded over to your ensuite. Your toothbrush and shower things lay untouched for several days at least, and you winced.
Deciding to start with your teeth, you scrubbed them thoroughly until they no longer felt disgusting and furry. The thought of tackling your hair right now made you feel dizzy, so instead you put it up in a shower cap as you washed the rest of your body. It would be even worse when you actually tried to deal with it, but you tried not to think about it. Thinking about it made you anxious.
You kept the hair hidden under your shower cap as you dried yourself and put on a t-shirt and sweatpants. At least they were clean.
Getting back into bed was tempting, but you wanted to use the momentum you had from showering to at least make some sort of appearance downstairs today, so, reluctantly, you made your way down to the living room.
“Look who finally decided to join us,” said your mother as soon as your foot hit the bottom step. You almost turned around right there and went back to bed, but then she said, “Just in time, too. We’re leaving.”
“Leaving?” You glanced over at Steve, who was standing in the doorway to the kitchen. He offered you a small, half-smile.
“Tomorrow morning. There’s still time to change your minds, you know,” said your father.
“We’re not coming with you,” Steve insisted. It had been a strong point of contention for the entire week they’d been here. “We have friends here, and responsibilities.”
“Oh of course.” Your mother threw her hands up, glaring at Steve. “And I’m sure these ‘responsibilities’ are more important than your own lives. My children throwing their lives away because they don’t want to say goodbye to their friends! Not sparing a thought for your poor parents! What do you expect me to do if you die in this hellhole town?”
A cruel, cynical part of you wondered if your mother would prefer it if you died. It would certainly bank her sympathy for life from her high-society lady friends. She sure did love being the centre of attention.
But no, of course not. Your relationship with her was strained, but she still loved you. Or at least, you hoped she did.
You and Steve had been the perfect children, once. He was captain of the swim team and a social butterfly, all set to follow your father into the world of business. You had been a straight A student with all of the extra-curriculars that made colleges fall at your feet.
But you weren’t those people anymore. Steve had graduated high school with no desire to go to college, and now he was working a minimum wage job at a video store and spending all his time driving a bunch of teenagers around town. You had painted your nails black and started smoking weed with the school’s resident super-super-senior, and your grades had suffered for it.
That thought caught in your throat. Eddie was gone. And your parents were still disappointed in you.
“We’re not going to die,” said Steve, sounded more certain than you knew he felt. “But we have people in this town who rely on us. We can’t leave Hawkins. Not yet.”
“And what exactly would you do if we decided to sell the house? May I remind you ungrateful children that your mother and I are providing the means for you to stay in town?” your father asked through gritted teeth.
You couldn’t suppress a snort. “Sell it to who? You said it yourself. Hawkins is a hellhole. No one is moving into Hawkins, and anyone from here who has the kind of money to buy this place has already left town.”
Your father glared at you, but you held your ground. “I can see there’s no point in trying to persuade you, so I won’t waste my breath. Suit yourself. We need to get packing.”
You stepped to the side so that your parents could both walk past you up the stairs. Steve was watching you carefully, so you offered him a weak smile.
Your familial obligations complete, you made your way back up to your bedroom.
~ PRESENT DAY ~
Eddie’s head was spinning. Your words were bouncing around inside his head.
You’re dead. You died months ago.
“If you’re really Eddie,” said Steve, breaking through his train of thought, “what happened in the Upside Down? How did you survive?”
“I…” Eddie tried to think. He had been in the Upside Down. Demobats had swarmed him. They had torn chunks of his flesh away, leaving him bleeding and in pain. And then, nothing. Trying to remember what happened after that point brought a searing pain behind his eyes.
He couldn’t answer Steve’s question. His eyes flickered to you, almost on instinct, as if you might be able to somehow help.
“Hey,” said Steve sharply, pointing his bat in Eddie’s face. “Don’t look at her. Look at me. How the fuck did you get here?”
“I… walked.” That much was true. Steve stared at him incredulously. “I honestly don’t remember how I got here. I just know that I was being attacked by bats, and then I was on my way here. That’s the truth, I swear.” Steve was at a loss for words. Eddie’s eyes darted to your baby bump. “Is that-”
“Don’t,” Steve interrupted. “If you have anything to say, say it to me. You don’t get to talk to her until I’m sure you’re not a zombie, or possessed, or-”
“Steve,” you said, your voice small. He turned to look at you, and Eddie took the opportunity to steal a glance too. Your eyes were bloodshot and watery.
Steve’s expression softened. “We’re gonna sort this out, okay? I’m gonna call Hopper, he’ll know what to do.”
“Hopper’s alive?”
Steve ignored him. “Let’s go.” He gestured to the stairs. “You go first,” he said to Eddie. “I’m not turning my back on you.”
With a deep sigh, Eddie obliged.

Thread about Joanna of Castile: Part 4: The birth of her children
Juana of Castile had six children. Here is a list of her children and their birthdates:
Eleanor of Austria: Born on November 15, 1498.
Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor: Born on February 24, 1500.
Isabella of Austria: Born on July 18, 1501.
Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor: Born on July 10, 1503.
Mary of Austria: Born on June 18, 1505.
Catherine of Austria: Born on February 14, 1507
Eleanor of Austria was born a year after her uncle's death, the precedent heir to the Spanish throne, John, Prince of Asturias, and four months after her mother's sister's death, Isabella of Aragon, Queen of Portugal.
Clearly disappointed that their first child was a girl, Eleanor, Philip required Juana to pay for the infant’s nursemaids and attendants.
“The Archduchess may provide for the places in the household of this child because it is a daughter,” Philip asserted. “When God grants us a son, I shall provide for his household.”
God did grant them a son. Juana gave birth to Charles in March 1500, much to Philip’s joy: fireworks raced across the sky, church bells rang, and Philip gave Juana a magnificent and costly emerald as a reward. Their third child, prudently named Isabella after Juana’s mother, was born in July 1501. Because Juana was pregnant with Isabella when news of Prince Miguel’s death and her subsequent inheritance reached her, she and Philip were unable to start for Spain until the autumn of 1501, a couple of months before her twenty-second birthday. For the death of Prince Miguel at Granada on 20 July 1500, five months after the birth of Charles, at Ghent, would convert Juana into heir apparent, and her lost homeland into her future and destination.
On 15 July 1501, she gave birth, in Brussels, to her third child, Isabella (later queen of Denmark). A new Spanish envoy, Juan Rodríguez de Fonseca, bishop of Córdoba, reported that Juana seemed eager to serve her parents and was widely thought to be “very sensible (cuerda) and very level-headed (asentada).” Opinion was divided as to whether she should do more to promote Spanish interests.
On July 10, 1503, Juana gave birth to her fourth child, Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.
On 15 September, feverish and in pain, the queen gave birth to a third daughter. Marie, the later Mary of Hungary, was baptized on 20 September at the church of Notre Dame de Sablon. Juana’s seclusion and captivity had long deprived her of her children and, during those rare moments when Philip tried to use them to soften her stance towards him, she had found it unsettling. But she now sought to maximize her time with them. Early in November, Philip left Brussels for Mechelen and Antwerp on the first leg of the second Spanish journey. Juana set out separately, intending to travel through Ghent and Bruges, and, Querini noted, she “has had all the children brought from Malines [Mechelen] and takes them with her to enjoy their company …”
Juana gave birth to her last child and daughter, Catherine of Austria in Torquemada, a town in the province of Palencia, Spain. Catherine was born on February 14, 1507, in the Torquemada Castle. When she was pregnant with her last child, Catherine of Austria, Joanna's mental instability had already worsened. She gave birth while she was in the town of Torquemada, and it is said to have been a difficult and complicated birth.

Bilans: 1184 kcal
Podsumowanie dnia:
Love, Ikar

Day 7: Charlotte of Savoy
Charlotte of Savoy
Born: c. 1441/3 Died: 1 December 1483
Parents: Louis, Duke of Savoy and Anne of Cyprus Queen of France Children: Louis (18 October 1458 – 1460) Joachim (15 July 1459 – 29 November 1459) Louise (born and died in 1460) Anne (3 April 1461 − 14 November 1522) - the wife of Peter II, Duke of Bourbon Joan (23 April 1464 – 4 February 1505) - the wife of Louis XII, King of France Louis (born and died on 4 December 1466) Charles VIII of France (30 June 1470 – 8 April 1498) Francis, Duke of Berry (3 September 1472 – November 1473)
Charlotte of Savoy was one of the 19 children of Louis, Duke of Savoy and Anne of Cyprus.
On 11 March 1443, the one year old Charlotte was betrothed to Frederick of Saxony, son of Frederick II, Elector of Saxony, but the arrangement was annulled for unknown reasons. Almost 8 years later, on 14 February 1451, Charlotte married Louis, Dauphin of France, eldest son of Charles VII of France and Marie of Anjou. Charlotte was 9 years old and Louis was 27. Louis' previous wife died childless in 1445. The marriage took place without the King of France’s consent. Upon the wedding, Charlotte became Dauphine of France.
When Louis received news of his succession to the throne of France, he abandoned Charlotte at the Burgundian court.
On 22 July 1461 Charlotte became the Queen of France. Soon she became ill and was close to death by August 1462. She recovered but despite that her health remained weakened.
Louis XI kept his wife away from court at the Château of Amboise along with her household. Charlotte mostly spent her days with her sisters and courtiers, playing chess, marbles, doing needlework, praying, doing her religious duties and supervising her daughters' education. On very few occasions, she was asked to perform her ceremonial duties as queen such as greeting foreign dignitaries.
Charlotte served as regent of France in September 1465.
Louis died on 30 August 1483 and was succeeded by their son Charles VIII. He did not appoint a regent instead left instructions for a royal council to govern during the minority of Charles. Charlotte, Duke Jean de Bourbon II and their two sons-in-law Louis d'Orleans (married to their daughter Jeanne) and Peter II, Duke of Bourbon (married to their daughter Anne) were made members of the council although in practice their daughter Anne took over as regent.
A few months after her husband’s death, Charlotte died on 1 December 1483 in Amboise. They are buried together in the Basilica of Our Lady, Cléry in Cléry-Saint-André (Loiret) in the arrondissement of Orléans.
Charlotte was interested in literature, her manuscripts were the foundation of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. She was regarded as virtuous.

random movie every week
week 5/1498 - Merrily We Roll Along (2013)
hello, i have a lot of movies and i have not seen that many of them. so every week i will watch a movie at random, and then wright a little blog about it and give it a rating out of 5 stars Previous Posts, Chronologically: google doc link THE RULES
i can skip any marvel movie i want (because i have seen them and i don't want to watch them again)
i can skip any movie i have seen more than twice (the goal is to watch movies that are new to me, but could be interesting to return to a movie i have only seen once, hence the rule)
ratings are out of 5 stars, with NO HALF STARS. half stars are for babies
If a film is part of a series, i reserve the right to start the film series from the beginning HERE WE GO
Merrily We Roll Along (2013)
Merrily We Roll Along is a MUSICAL i watched the 2013 pro shot filmed at the Menier Theater. i am hoping you know which one i mean when i say that
Merrily is a musical that follows a group of characters, where the events unfold in reverse chronological order; starting with the end, and going backwards until you begin where they began.
the BRIEF synopsis: Frank is a successful hollywood movie producer, and he has a famous broadway wife, the money, and the mistress, and all of those things. He hates his life, and the people around him hate how they ended up, too. then we start to follow Frank's life backwards. we see him have a falling out with his best friend Charley, and how that happened, and how they thrived, and how they met. We see him with their other friend Mary who is an alcoholic, who has always loved Frank, and how their dynamic changes as Frank chooses women other than her, and how they met and how she thought she met a decent man. We see Gussie, the woman who marries Frank, but breaks up Frank's first marriage, and how she pulled Frank into her life with the promise of fame and fortune. We see Frank's first wife, Beth, who leaves him when she finds out about Gussie, and they met when Frank and Charley were going to perform one of their first shows. and it begins, with Frank freshly coming out of the army, showing his friend Charley that he is a profound composer. And Charley, showing Frank that he can write great lyrics. And they meet Mary, who hears them on the roof, and they all look at the shining light of Sputnik in the night's sky, hammering home the notion that the future looks brightest when it's in the distance.
Merrily really did it for me, i think. using the framing device of showing the events in reverse, seeing all of the events of their lives unfold, and you see all of the promise they had, the belief in a common dream that seemed achievable, the friendship that was. And you see all of these things, knowing that in a few short years how they end up.
i found it to be quite sad, it was deeply effective at making me think of relationships and friendships that are in the past, how things have changed for the worse. merrily makes you feel nostalgic for your youth in a way i have not felt yet in my 33ish years on the planet earth.
i think you can watch Merrily one thousand times, and it will change with you as you age. i think merrily is going to work or not work for you on different levels depending on how you relate to the various characters, and the points in their lives you have experienced, and how that relates to the characters on the stage.
the actual film was well made; the plays sets are simple, so it translates to film quite well. and the songs are pretty good all around. this is a musical to me where the songs are more natural and part of the environment, and those are good but i find the songs don't stick with me in isolation as other musicals. like if i tried to remember every line of a play rather than the melodies
i gave Merrily We Roll Along a 4/5. i think for most people you should watch it.

A Timeworn Scroll Reveals King Henry VII’s Interests in New World Colonization
By Ashley Cowie, 6 October 2018
Rolled up parchment with information of payment to William Weston from Henry VII. (Source: The National Archives, UK)
In AD 1499, England launched its very first English-led expedition to "Terra Nova” (New World) and now researchers studying a 16th century scroll have found King Henry VII awarded William Weston, one the explorers, with a handsome paycheck.
While the payment of 30 British pounds sterling could hardly be called a king’s ransom, at that time, this was a considerable sum of money; equivalent of a laborers salary for six years, said researchers in a their paper, which was published online on October 2 in the journal Historical Research.
The information was discovered on a huge parchment dating back more than 500 years and ultraviolet light was required to reveal the hidden text said study co-researcher Evan Jones, a senior lecturer in economic and social history at the University of Bristol in a report in Live Science .
Early Transatlantic Rumors
In 2009, the University of Bristol published Jones paper titled The lost voyage: First English-led expedition to North America in which a “long lost letter” written by King Henry VII was addressed to Weston as he “was preparing for an expedition to the new found land.”
The king was excited and in support of Weston because in AD 1497 and 1498, the Venetian explorer John Cabot had successfully sailed the Atlantic having set off from the southern English port of Bristol. But it seems Weston was preparing a British-led expedition.
“The Cabot Project” is an international project aimed at researching the late 15th and early 16th centuries Transatlantic voyages from Bristol.
Margaret Condon of the University of Bristol, who is part of the Cabot Project, researched endless tax records gathering data about the oceanic adventurers traveling to and from North America.
These were “written on huge parchment rolls, created from the skin of more than 200 sheep” according to the Live Science article, and each segment on the roll measured “6.5 feet (2 meters) long.”
In the University of Bristol’s statement about the discoveries, Condon said that the rolls were "beasts to deal with, but also precious and irreplaceable documents.”
Handling them, she said, “sometimes feels like you're wrestling, very gently, with an obstreperous [boisterous] baby elephant!”
Returning to the main discovery, King Henry VII rewarded Weston in January 1498 after they met.
Researchers believe “it appears that Weston was likely one of the unnamed 'great seamen' from Bristol whom Italian diplomats wrote about during the winter of 1497 to 1498” while describing the Bristol explorers who joined Cabot on his two 1490’s expeditions.
Nobody is quite sure how Cabot's last 1498 expedition turned out but perhaps its ill fate inspired King Henry VII to send his expedition the following year, led by one of Cabot's deputies, the researchers speculated.
Further evidence gathered by members of the Cabot Project revealed that "Weston was a bit of a gambler, but perhaps you had to be, to risk your life on such a dangerous voyage into unknown seas.”
On another level of this fascinating story, the new study also confirmed two extraordinary claims made by Alwyn Ruddock, a deceased historian from the University of London who, having studied the early English voyages to the Americas for over 4 decades, claimed that Cabot had explored most of the North American continent’s east coast by AD 1500.
Ruddock never published her discoveries and in a bizarre act, upon her death in 2005, she ordered that all her notes were destroyed, and so they were.
These new findings support the two extraordinary claims made by Ruddock who spent over 40 years researching England's first voyages to North America, and although she never published any of her work, she did submit a book synopsis and this was shared with Jones.
Ruddock also claimed that a band of Italian friars had sailed with Cabot on his AD 1498 expedition who went on to establish “the first European Christian colony and church in North America” according to an article in Newsweek.
Offering reason as to why the king rewarded Weston, she implied that Weston moved northwards up the Labrador coast searching for the North West passage around the continent.
The authors of the latest study suggest it was for this specific reason that Weston was rewarded by Henry VII.
