which "h2o: just add water" episodes centered each character? a quantitative analysis
hello, 2021 h2o enjoyers! lately, i've been thinking about how many h2o episodes focus on a specific mermaid. naturally, i wondered—which main mermaid (cleo, rikki, emma, and bella) has the most episodes dedicated to their character arc? and what percent of the show focuses on that character? so i wrote up this quantitative analysis and... yeah.
caveats:
-there are many h2o episodes that don’t center any specific character, which is why these episodes are not included on the list.
-there are some episodes that focus a lot on on lewis, charlotte, will, et cetera. however, i decided to only compile episode lists for the four main mermaids.
-there’s no perfect methodology for this type of analysis. some episodes that i included in one character’s category also included a substantial plot point for another character. i just tried to use my best judgement; typically, if an episode mainly revolved around [insert character], significantly contributed to a character’s arc, and/or if that character had the most screen time in that episode, i labeled it as [insert character]-centric.
under the cut, you’ll find each character’s episodes!
list of cleo-centric episodes:
season 1
1x02 pool party
1x03 catch of the day
1x08 the denman affair
1x12 the siren effect
1x14 surprise!
1x16 lovesick
1x19 hurricane angela
season 2
2x05 hocus pocus
2x06 pressure cooker
2x07 hot water
2x10 missed the boat
2x16 double trouble
2x19 the gracie code, part one
2x25 sea change
season 3
3x03 keep your enemies close
3x07 happy families
3x09 the sorcerer’s apprentice
3x13 to have and to hold back
3x17 a magnetic attraction
3x24 too close for comfort
total: 19 episodes
divided by the number of episodes in the series*: 19/78 or ≈24%
list of rikki-centric episodes:
season 1
1x06 young love
1x09 dangerous waters
1x10 the camera never lies
1x18 bad moon rising
1x22 fish out of water
1x23 in too deep
season 2
2x03 the one that got away
2x08 wrong side of the tracks
2x11 in over our heads
2x24 three’s company
season 3
3x05 big ideas
3x12 crime & punishment
3x16 the dark side
3x18 into the light
3x21 the jewel thief
total: 15 episodes
divided by the number of episodes in the show: 15/78 or ≈19%
list of emma-centric episodes:
season 1
1x04 party girls
1x07 moon spell
1x11 sink or swim
1x15 the big chill
1x21 red herring
season 2
2x04 fire and ice
2x12 fish fever
2x14 get off my tail
2x17 moonstruck
total: 9 episodes
divided by the number of episodes in which emma appeared: 9/51 or ≈18%
divided by the number of episodes in the series: 9/78 or ≈12%
list of bella-centric episodes:
season 3
3x02 jungle hunt
3x06 secrets & lies
3x08 kidnapped
3x10 revealed
3x11 just a girl at heart
3x20 queen for a day
3x23 beach party
total: 7 episodes**
divided by the number of episodes in which bella appeared: 7/26 episodes or ≈27%
divided by the number of episodes in the series: 7/78 or ≈9%
overall, 50 episodes (or ≈64% of all h2o episodes) focus more on a specific character’s arc, leaving 28 episodes (or ≈36%) that focus more on the group as a whole.
what does this analysis tell us? well, unsurprisingly, far fewer episodes center emma or bella. but 18 episodes center cleo—does this mean that she's the main main character of the series? i'd argue that the writers framed her character this way. still, rikki, emma, and even bella are hardly minor characters. after all, h2o is about the Power of Friendship in this trio of girls who have been brought together by the mermaid secret—and each girl is supposed to play a roughly equal role in all of this.
footnotes:
*cleo and rikki were the only mermaids to appear in all 78 episodes of h2o. therefore, i didn’t break their screen time down any further like i did with emma and bella, who appeared in 51 and 26 episodes, respectively. (no, emma wasn’t in all 52 episodes of her two seasons—she didn’t appear in “the gracie code, part one”.)
**i feel like i should add that most of bella’s episodes are also will-centric. while she has more episodes dedicated to her in season 3 than cleo or rikki, this doesn’t necessarily translate to more character development or meaningful plot lines. i’ll let you form your own opinions on that, though.

I am so ready for s3 Malex. In the meantime, I appreciate the queer writers always trying to reassure us off-screen how much Michael loves Alex and how he never looks away, trying to salvage the s2 narrative. It's going to be something to actually see that expressed in a healthy way on screen and not be constantly told how toxic it is and how it's something that needs to be moved on from. Vlamis is going to kill lovesick and hopeful Michael, and I can't wait.
I appreciate it, too, but
after 2 seasons of barely seeing anything of what Danny said in this interview, they have to do right by Malex in S3 and actually DELIVER "positivity and positive portrayal".
I legit choked on air when he said he's tired of "doom & gloom". YOU DON'T SAY. 🤨 Imagine how tired we are of it. Have been for 2 seasons actually...
I'm also tired of hearing writers and showrunners talk like this, and then they go and write an absolute sh!t show for queer characters. Anyone can say pretty words, but if they are not followed by actions, it's just hollow and meaningless blah blah. 🤷‍♀️Fingers crossed that's not the case this season.
Imo most of the harm in S1 and 2 was done by CAM, she wanted the queer trauma porn bc that's somehow her idea of great queer representation. Those two seasons are done and dusted tho, nothing will change what harm's been done. It's now up to Chris, Danny, and the other writers to deliver something MUCH better in S3.
So yeah, while I appreciate Danny's words, I can only hope that we will see them actively reflected ON SCREEN in S3. Bc this season, he had the "power" to have some real influence on the writing. So did Alanna (another queer writer, there might be more queer writers but I don't know for certain).
Vlamis is going to kill lovesick and hopeful Michael, and I can't wait.
He'll deliver that perfectly, absolutely. I still don't want them to dwell on it forever, though. I want Malex to get on track to getting together as quickly as possible. I don't want them to waste another entire season on Malex NOT being together (I don't think they will, but I expect that we'll have to wait at least until 3x06 or so).
Anyway, I'm still feeling very positive about S3, this post isn't meant to shit on S3 before we even had a chance to watch it (haha, new content WHEN???). :P
All I'm saying is that I don't care about pretty words any longer if they are not followed by on-screen actions. I'm ready to see ALL the positivity and ALL the positive portrayal for Malex.
Don't fuck this up, Danny/Chris/writers 🙃

I recently read this heartbreaking fic and ever since I've been pondering the fact that Mickey has had to live with the aftermath of 3x06 without Ian ever truly realizing the full extent of that; when it happens Ian is a lot more focused on what this means for him and his relationship to Mickey than on what it means for Mickey himself. I don't fault him for this, as he was just a kid and neither should have to carry that sort of responsibility, nor can be expected to have the emotional maturity to deal with something like that. And then Ian's illness happened, and then the break-up and separation, and I just don't think Ian ever really got around to processing the full scope of Mickey's trauma, even after they were reunited.
And then I thought about what would happen if Mickey were to casually recognize the signs of similar abuse in someone else, leading to Ian, no longer a lovesick teeanger and armed with quite a bit of mental health know-how, finally and fully getting it:
Julia is soon gone, thankfully, but somehow Carl's never long without a girl. The new one is called Evie, and she's nice enough; confident and maybe just a little bit crazy, the way Carl likes them. Sharp.
It's early days still when she comes over for the afternoon. Ian's out somewhere with Lip and Freddie, but Mickey's there, lounging about in the kitchen or on the couch. And it's a little unclear what happens, but she freaks hard at something Carl does or says and maybe there's a few harsh words shouted or hissed before she's out the door, slamming it shut behind her in a very decisive way.
“What the fuck just happened?” Carl asks, utterly bewildered and to no one in particular.
Mickey answers him all the same. It's a guess, certainly, but it's an educated one. Carl has no way of knowing that, but he's always been a litle bit in awe of Mickey so he listens all the same. Goes after Evie, and finds her. Of course that doesn't fix anything for Evie, but it gives her and Carl something to start from if they so wish, an understanding of sorts.
And later that evening, when Lip and Ian return, Carl's at the kitchen table with Debbie and Franny. It is warm and it is bright, and they chat easily, talking about their respective days. Things take turn for the somber when Carl mentions what happened to Evie, but hey, it worked out pretty well.
“You teach Mickey that shit?” Lip asks Ian, raising an eyebrow in his direction and smirking ever so slightly. “Trying to get him to be your 'Save our Youth' wingman?”
But Ian isn't smiling at all. “Where is Mickey?” he asks quietly.
Carl shrugs. “Upstairs, I think.”
And Ian heads upstairs, heart beating much too hard, limbs feeling much too heavy. He knows, only too well, why Mickey might recognize symtoms such as these, and yet... Yet he never connected the dots, never applied the medical knowledge he has now to what he knows of what Mickey went through then. Never fucking fully realized, though it's been staring him in the face ever since, in every barely aborted start, every sudden stillness and eyes averted -
He thinks he might throw up. The guilt is a cold and vicious thing tearing at his insides, because Mickey was there through his illness, through it all, stayed right by Ian's side until Ian wouldn't let him, but where was Ian when Mickey needed him, where the fuck was he, and why the fuck didn't he ever fucking think - ?
Mickey's smoking on the bed, lazily checking whatever on his phone. He looks up when Ian entrers, offers a brief smile: “Hey.”
Ian is on him immediately, straddling his lap, arms wrapped around him so hard, and he is kissing him, kissing him, kissing him. Pours into the kiss all the apologies he knows Mickey will not want to hear, pours into it the love he wishes was enough to heal the past.
“Yeah, missed you too, Gallagher,” Mickey says a little breathlessly when they finally break apart. His gaze is sharp, though; searching. Catches the wetness in Ian's eyes. “What's going on?”
And Ian hesitates, because he doesn't know what to say but knows that Mickey would rather he say nothing at all. Would rather they keep on keeping it all locked away and on silent, as they have for so many years, because it is easier, because there has always been something else that needs their immediate attention, whether it's Ian's illness or surviving prison or planning a wedding.
No such excuses now. “Can we talk?” Ian asks, and hates that his voice fucking breaks, that he is the one breaking.
Mickey looks at him, both tense and resigned. Understands now where this is headed, and Ian is right – he would really rather not. “We have to?”
Ian lets go of a long sigh. The moment of uncertainty and weakness has passed; he knows what needs to be done and Ian is many things but not a coward: not when it comes to Mickey, not anymore. “Yeah. I think we do.” His eyes are very soft, like the touch of his thumbs as he runs them down Mickey's face.
Mickey sighs too. Says, “Fine.”

:O Gotham 3x06. I did NOT think they had it in them. Do any of you care about spoilers? I’m gonna put a read more to be safe.
THEY CAME THROUGH ON THE COBBLEPOT BEING IN LOVE WITH NYGMA THING. WHAT. I mean literally all of the shots were set up like romantic shots and the music was SUPER DUPER romantic whenever they were talking to each other and COBBLEPOT STARES AT NYGMA LIKE THE MOST LOVESICK FOOL. Like, I started watching their scenes together cause I couldn’t believe they’d really frame them so obviously romantically. I assumed they’d never go through with it. But they did.

Love is More Thicker Than Forget
Fandom: The Librarians
Rating: general audiences/sfw
Ships: low key Jazekiel
So for some reason my brain decided 3 am was the perfect time to write my first Librarians fic. Surprisingly, I didn’t have to edit much. Also, I started this story thinking that Stone and Flynn had left to get beers from the fountain of youth, but I realized that was from the previous episode. I decided to keep it anyway cuz he’s probably got a big stash in there.
This is set a little bit after the last scene in the annex on episode 3x06 “and the Curse of Cindy”
Posted on my Ao3 here.
------
Jake and Flynn returned from the depths of the Annex with several cold beer bottles in hand. Jenkins, scowling with his face conveying the message “I would tell you not to use an artifact like that but you will ignore me anyway,” claimed needing to clean his lab after hastily concocting the antidote potion, and left through another door, leaving the librarians and guardian in the main room. Ezekiel wasn't feeling up to drinking just yet, not after what Stone had said to him anyway, so he wandered down the hallway towards Jenkins lab.
He was doing as he said: cleaning. The lab wasn't in a horrible state, but Ezekiel could tell he had been in a rush from the various jars and vials still laying on the counters. Jenkins himself was standing at the sink, scrubbing a beaker down with some shimmering soap, probably magic soap. He hadn't noticed Ezekiel enter.
“Hey Jenkins,” he started, making his presence known. Jenkins turned around to the voice, still scrubbing away at some glassware.
“Oh, hello Ezekiel. Is there something you need?” he asked, keeping an eye on Ezekiel moving more into his lab.
“Uh, yeah. So how does that love potion work?” Ezekiel responded, looking at all the stuff strewn about Jenkins’ workspace.
“Like I said before, it’s not a love potion. It creates obsession,” Jenkins scoffed. The comforting whooshing noises of his scrubbing stopped as he paused to think. “Though I suppose you could call ‘love’ a form of obsession.” He went back to scrubbing away.
“But how did it not work on me? It’s not like I’m in love with anyone to begin with,” Ezekiel clarified, picking up what looked to be an old-fashioned perfume bottle. It smelled pleasant, but different from Cindy’s potion. Out of instinct he pocketed the bottle.
“You are so self-absorbed that the potion couldn’t affect your perception of others,” Jenkins responded matter-of-factly.
“Is that really why it didn’t work?” His conversation with Stone had made him question that statement.
“Yes...and no. I do think your ego was part of it, but I can’t figure out what else. For instance, we all know Flynn loves the library, he would die for the library, but he was affected, which is why love doesn’t protect someone from it,” Jenkins said. He turned to look at Ezekiel again, with a hint of pity on his face. “If it’s really bothering you, I’m sure we have a book on potions that may shed light somewhere.”
“Oh no, heh, I don’t want to research,” Ezekiel stuttered, his brain turning over what Jenkins had said. “I was just...curious.”
“Well, don’t let anyone tease you about it. Being immune to a love potion is a good trait to have,” Jenkins added.
“Will do,” Ezekiel smiled.
“If you’d like, you could help me clean---actually nevermind, I don’t want you taking anything you think is ‘cool,’” Jenkins said.
“Nah, I’m not one for cleaning, especially if I can’t take things,” Ezekiel laughed. Jenkins just rolled his eyes and turned back to cleaning.
He left the lab, feeling the bottle in his jacket pocket. A prank on Stone felt like a good idea at the time, even if he had no clue what this bottle of stuff actually did, though he had a feeling it was related to the whole ordeal they just went through. Perhaps he could prove an obsession potion had nothing to do with love like Stone had claimed, or at least that his love was aimed at Cindy (surely all the times he had risked his life for the other, for his family, would've been obvious enough to show where his affections lie, but Stone could be a little thick). Striding back into the main room he saw Stone and Flynn still sitting at the main worktable, chatting about some obscure culture fact. The girls had gone off somewhere, probably bored out of their minds listening to the two dorks argue about 14th century art or something.
“I'll have that beer now, if you didn't already down it in my absence,” Ezekiel called, sliding up next to Stone like nothing was up.
“I was tempted, but I figured you'd get thirsty eventually,” Stone sighed, passing him the unopened bottle.
“Your love for me is oh so evident,” he chided, making sure to sound pretty sarcastic. Stone didn't seem to think anything of it as he turned back to Flynn.
“So like I was saying, The Decameron had always been written like it was fiction, and for years historians interpreted as such, but…” Jake droned on about some piece of literature, and Flynn listened like a dog waiting for the right time to steal the toy from its sibling, waiting to find something Stone didn't know so he could parade his knowledge around. Ezekiel had gotten used to zoning out when they did this, which while not happening often, got made up for by lasting for hours on end.
He felt the small bottle in his jacket pocket, maneuvering it so he could push the bulb and hold on onto it with one hand. He had a plan of course, to get Stone to smell it before Flynn did. Stone occasionally put his right hand on his thigh, smoothing out his jeans unnecessarily. If Ezekiel spritzed his hand, eventually stone would take a drink, bringing the potion-misted hand near his face. Feigning attentiveness to the conversation, he waited for several minutes until Stone set the plan in motion.
It took a couple minutes for the effect to kick in, but it was very obvious when it did. Stone stopped mid-sentence, turning his head to look at Ezekiel next to him. His art-concentration face had changed to what Ezekiel could only describe as “bedroom eyes.”
“Stone, are you alright?” Flynn asked, confused by his behavior.
“Never better,” he mumbled, not taking his eyes off Ezekiel. Then, of all things, Stone started reciting a poem.
“love is more thicker than forget/ more thinner than recall/ more seldom than a wave is wet/ more frequent than to fail/ it is most mad and moonly-”  Stone purred in his poem reciting voice. Ezekiel noticed Flynn fidgeting, a blush forming on his cheeks as he gawked at Stone.
Before he could recite anymore, footsteps rang from the hallway behind Ezekiel. “I know you took it! Give it back-Oh, you did not!” Jenkins shouted, storming back to his lab and returning with the bug sprayer still filled with the working antidote. He gave Stone a good dousing, then stuck his hand out to Ezekiel. “Hand it over, now.” Normally he'd play coy with Jenkins, but the contempt contorting the immortal’s face made him comply. Jenkins looked like he was going to berate him, but instead sighed heavily and walked back to his lab.
Stone, now out of his induced-lovesick daze, looked from the still flushed Flynn to Ezekiel. “What just happened?” he asked, more of a demand than a request.
“I, uh, heh, well I-” Ezekiel stumbled on his words, suddenly embarrassed with how stupid he had been just now. “I may have just sprayed a nondescript bottle of potion on you, unknowing until now that it was probably the leftover love potion Jenkins used to make the antidote.”
“You...what?” Stone’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Why the hell would you do that!?”
“I...I dunno, thought it would be funny I guess,” Ezekiel stammered.
“Funny? Really!? After what just happened!?!” Stone growled. He was getting quite angry.
“Ok! It was a stupid idea, I get it!” Ezekiel snapped. He looked to Flynn for help, but Flynn had quietly disappeared. So much for that escape plan. He looked back to Stone, who suddenly looked calmer than he had been.
“Was it because of what I said earlier?” Stone asked, somewhat forced sympathy in his voice.
“Yeah, I guess. I didn't really think about it, spraying you I mean. I did think about what you said though, and you're wrong,” Ezekiel clarified, not sure why he was divulging to Stone.
“What do ya mean ‘I was wrong’?” Stone’s eyebrows were back to furrowed in confusion only.
“I didn't, I don't love Cindy. I saved her because I saw myself in her, or rather myself without my confidence and natural ‘Ezekiel Jones charm.’” He couldn't help acting cocky when talking about his self-esteem, but he dropped it. “I had no one, like her, and I knew how it felt. I could sympathize with her, get her to see the error of her ways, save the day and all. But I never loved her. And Jenkins said it wasn’t love anyway.” He paused, swishing the beer in his bottle like it could alleviate the situation. “If anything my...love...was aimed elsewhere.”
Apparently Stone thought this was the time to joke now. “Oh, well who's the lucky lady?”
“You.” Ezekiel hadn't meant to blurt that and quickly backtracked at the look of confusion, and sudden blush on Stone's face. “I mean you, and Cassandra and Colonel Baird and Jenkins and Flynn. You all filled a hole of what I didn't have: a family who cared about me. And I don't want to lose that.” He laughed to the ceiling, uncomfortable with this sudden sharing of feelings. “Have you not noticed how I changed? I'm not just the thief who waits for my time to shine when I'm needed anymore. I'd die for you guys...I have died, many times, because I don't want to lose you.”
Stone was shocked; his mouth hung half open like he was trying to say something but it wouldn't come out. “I didn't know, I swear.” he looked to the bookcases, a smirk forming on his face before he looked back to Ezekiel. “Now that I think about it, I should've noticed. I guess I got it stuck in my head that you were the self-absorbed thief, so everything you did ultimately was for yourself, but that's not the case anymore.”
“You better not speak a word of this to Colonel Baird or Cassandra,” Ezekiel whispered, feeling quite self-conscious all the sudden.
“Never,” Stone smiled, touched that Ezekiel opened up to him. He ruffled Ezekiel's hair playfully for a moment, though his hand lingered a little longer than necessary. “Thanks for telling me this.”
Ezekiel smiled back meekly, fighting the urge to kiss Stone then and there. He cleared his throat, more for himself than for ending the conversation, and stood up. “I should probably go apologize to Jenkins. I don't want him ticked off at me for a week.” He took a swig of his mostly untouched beer before turning to leave.
“Go get ‘em,” Stone said.
Suddenly something hit him in the butt. Ezekiel jumped, spinning back to Stone smirking at him; a hint of those “bedroom eyes” from before were back. Deciding that was enough feeling confession for now, Ezekiel high-tailed it down the hall to Jenkins, hoping Stone missed the painfully obvious blush on his face.
