I just watched s3ep6 so spoilers for that in my ask but...

Why do you think Will was going to knife Hannibal before he got shot? Was he going to kill him, or just give him a scar? I didn't quite expect it after the way he laughed in the museum

Hi friend! Little disclaimer before I answer your question: I have only watched the show once so far, and I am at the end of season 1 with my rewatch. So I am not familiar with every possible interpretation, and my answer might change once I've finished my rewatch!

Now, onto your question: I actually thought about it as I was falling asleep, trying to understand Will's motive and what his actions could mean.

I think what it comes down to is the overarching theme of forgiveness.

There are a few parallels at play here: 2x13 ends with Hannibal both figurately and literally gutting Will, but he also says that he forgives him for his betrayal.

Fast forward to 3x02, 8 months later we are now in Italy. Will has followed Hannibal and is trying to reunite with him. We do not know for what purpose yet. Is it to kill him? To stay with him? But we do find out that Abigail is dead. And Will forgives Hannibal.

Then, in 3x06, they finally reunite. "If I saw you every day forever, Will, I would remember this time." All seems to be well. They smile, they laugh. They leave together. Chiyoh saves Hannibal's life.

In a way, I think that Will had forgiven Hannibal for killing Abigail and very nearly killing him. For framing him, for uprooting his life, for leaving. But we cannot forget that Will and Hannibal's relationship is defined by metaphorical and literal violence. They can say something and mean it, and then go and do something contradicting it. That doesn't mean it wasn't true.

Will had forgiven Hannibal. He also wanted to hurt him. And I personally think that even with his knife in his hand, he didn't know if he was going to kill Hannibal or not. He doesn't answer Hannibal's question if he would have done it quickly, and we know that in his fantasy, he wanted to kill Hannibal with his bare hands. Like an animal.

Like with most of the show, there is an ambiguity to the character's action that allows for either interpretation. I choose to believe that Will didn't know what he was going to do - only that he was going to try.

Will lays eyes on Hannibal for the first time since Hannibal gutted him. Both men battered and bruised. He comes forward and lays a gentle hand on Hannibal's shoulder. Hannibal looks up at Will and smiles -- pleased to see him. Will sits beside Hannibal on the bench in front of the glorious painting. A moment as they absorb.

Thinking about how I want to cook for a coworker, hoping he’ll forgive me, and in a way hoping this is helping me to forgive him. Something something the gentleness in cooking is a core ingredient for forgiveness, and the fuel for moving forward.

and behind them are the portraits of botticelli, on hannibals side, and the woman he loved and was his muse in all his works of art, on wills side. (as you can see below). this is why i chose to get the primavera scene signed by mads and hugh, it means the world to me. i also wrote an art history essay in college on primavera, it's such a beautiful piece and the hannigram symblism AGH i love it

next up hopefully my college exchange program works and i get to go to Florence go to see it myself 🤭

Hannibal and Will reuniting and acknowledging their love in front of the primavera means so much to me actually. The centrepoint of the primavera is the goddess Venus. Chloris the nymph blooms into Flora the goddess at the touch of Zephyr's love, and heralds the coming of spring. The painting is symbolic of all the themes of renewal, new beginnings, and transformative love shared between the both of them. I can't even imagine how Hannibal must have felt in that moment, sat next to the man he loves that he has changed and that changed him in front of the painting the depicted the connection he desparately craved all those years.
