The "Nubbin bug" lives - A Star Trek prop resurrection with 3D Printing 🐛🖖🎥

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 1, Episode 25 (May 1988), "Conspiracy", was one of my favorites. It featured a mind-controlling alien parasite referred to as the "Nubbin bug", or at least by The Greatest Generation Star Trek podcast.

Back in 1998, there was not a lot of computer CGI, so it was a stop-motion prop. Years later, the co-hosts of The Greatest Generation, a fun Star Trek podcast, stumbled upon the original silicone molds used to create the Nubbin bug while a listener found in a warehouse clearance sale in Van Nuys, California.

The podcasters acquired the mold. Shortly after, a listener from Atlanta who works at a prop studio offered to help preserve the prop since the original rubber material would decay over time. This led to the creation of archival-quality plaster casts to preserve the iconic alien for generations to come.

And they did some more, using 3D scanners - the Nubbin bug was recreated as a 3D model, allowing for exact replicas to be printed. Over 100 of these replicas were made, each one hand-painted and assembled to match the original as closely as possible. Their handmade / 3D-printed versions look almost identical to the bugs that appeared in the episode.

They also designed a Playschool-style retail packaging box to package the bugs. Fans of the podcast can purchase the limited-edition replicas. I don't know if they will post the 3D files, but I'll email and ask.

This is a really cool project from one of the weirdest/best episodes, and I am thrilled that someone was able to preserve this piece of Sci-Fi history in such a cool way - the entire story is on this TikTok video.

For as long as I've known her, my friend Ashley has wanted us to do a pair cosplay of Dream and Death from the Sandman. They're relatively simple costumes, but we just never got around to it.

This Ankh represents the first step towards actually doing this.

Now, you might say to me: Michael, why 3D print an Ankh? Just buy one.

And to that I say: yeah I probably should have. But I was committed to the bit.

Minor Update on my thermal detonator, I stripped my daughter’s broken flashlight for LEDs and glued on in place on the main lense. If you are like me, you may find yourself daydreaming of snowy peaks and rolling terrain of mixed variety all too frequently. Turbulence to treachery just recently covered in pristine silent whimsy, waiting to be explored and conquered by the ski daredevils often not afraid enough of the gravity the terrain instills. The opposite is often true of 3D printed orthographic terrain often dwarfed by scale or lack of ability to reference closely. However this 3D Printed Model of Olympic Valley at Palisades Tahoe does not hide the expansiveness the terrain yet overall single-bowl oriented cohesion. The lifts for this model are resented as slit cavities in the model to not distract from the true topography. Would a ski resort made of tunnels and elevators possibly return the ownership of the mountain to the mountain and less consumers? I applied a generous layer of 3D Print Stick XL to the glass bed of our shop MP-10 for this print as the printer is not insulated and the corners of flat models can at times lift as the print cools. With 3D Print Stick the print had no issues and instead create beautiful sharp borders and semi-reflective back layer. Human scale kitty ears! These are scaled to an adults head so they are a bit big on Satan's 3 y/o head. These are the prototype test print, and despite that they came out fantastic (I love our Prusa mk3!). We're going to do a bit more testing, but if all goes well you can buy Dolly and me matching kitty ears or just a pair for yourself. Last month I went to Brooklyn Comic Con, a small local convention, and got bitten by the cosplay bug again.

I've got some serious cosplay plans in the pipeline, but I wanted to start with something small. A prop I could test my 3D print post processing techniques on.

So here's "That Gun" from Fallout. An old hunting rifle someone cut down into a revolver. Personally I think it's the an even better one handed weapon than the Plasma Pistol, but that's just me.

This took about a month to print, given all the printer troubles I had. And then maybe a week and a half after that.

I'd originally wanted to use Culture Hustle's Mirror paint for the chrome but that's only getting here in October. Might end up redoing parts of this when it does finally get here.
