Zom 100 - Bucket List of The Dead Episode 1: Akira of The Dead

I'll lay my cards on the table right from the start: I haven't read Zom 100, and at this current moment I have no real intention or interest in doing so. Why might I be watching the anime then? Well because it's BUGS FILMS first anime, that's why. They've done production assistance on series like Komi (due to staff overlap at the time), and have parted themselves out for key animation here and there, but this is their very first lead and solo production. Of course I'm going to see how it is. And how is it? Well, it's a grab bag of insanity handpicked from the minds of the creative team behind this adaptation, crafted with surprising expertise, and delivered in a very polished package to the eyes of viewers. So yeah, very good, and very much plenty to talk about!

I think one of the most interesting things off the bat is how strong the direction is through this first episode. Kawagoe Kazuki (who's first direction credits were for Komi) brings the heat through this first episode as the lead and episode director, as well as storyboarder. Back to why the direction is interesting though, initially you might think "oh, widescreen because it's a movie, and it just has a more muted color palette", but that's not the case. It's a bit of a two in one, where the widescreen indicates that we're looking through Akira's eyes, and the lack of color is a reflection of their outlook. It's well done, but I also think they could do a bit more to really explore the idea, but in its current state it's still really solid.

While not as important as the widescreen effect and use of color, the transitions boarded by Kazuki themself are very creative and blend incredibly well with the episode. Just one of those things that adds some real nice flair and style that can help tie the bleaker/more plain moments together with the more showy ones through the latter half of the episode.

What you can (sort of) see through these gifs though is another important piece that I think is well done through the episode: the "zombification" of Akira himself. More sluggish and unresponsive, coupled with heavy and off balance movements. The entire concept of the gradient and Akira's descent into depression and exhaustion is very well depicted. Towards the end of his backstory though is arguably the best pieces for his despair, just really well done animation and direction that sells that zombie side of his character.

Also, just a little side piece. Following this scene we return with Akira to his room where we see on the news the beginnings of the zombie outbreak. But actually, the episode spoils the fun a few seconds in advance with the ambulance that passes by Akira's apartment. Just a really neat little detail to show that the outbreak isn't just a single point that's currently starting, but rather it's already expanded to a network that continues to grow.

Anyways, the next topic of the post: depth!. I mean, you can see it in the above still as well, a lot of scenes are well layered with their content. Not all of them will have detailed parts that are all moving, but they will provide the context that there is a greater world that exists outside of Akira's vision (though this does fade as his exhaustion and depression grow).

Also, people aren't explicitly required to provide depth or layers to a scene, it's just that they're the easiest examples to provide. These solo shots manage the same effect, for example.

Coincidentally, this is also where the episode picks up! Flashes of color appear, Akira regains his energy, and a horde of zombies claw at his heels. I was very surprised with this latter half, and I mean very. They use some really sneaky tactics to make the best of the moment. Have a zombie that's going to make a lunge for Akira? They're in 2D. Have a zombie in the background that's going to just zombie about? Make em 3D. The heavy visuals effects coupled with the more "rough" art style allow them to blend in really well unless you're looking right at them.

For example (though it may be hard to tell because of compression and size, so best to open the image in a new tab), take a look at this still and see if you notice anything. That's correct! The first two zombies in the row are 2D (because they lunge at Akira), while the rest in the line are 3D. Really smart workflow that's further bolstered by direction that does its best to mask the 3D zombies.

For a purely 2D affair though, this incredible short cut from Akira fleeing up the stairs. I'm endlessly impressed with how solid BUGS' work is through this first episode.

As you can tell, this second half/latter third brings an insane amount of energy to make up for how devoid of it Akira was through his backstory. It's really great work, and the flow of the action through Akira's chase sequence is really impressive. They do a great job with interacting with the environment while providing a cramped feel through the apartment complex alongside some "right behind you" tension. All of which leads to this moment, essentially the perfect personification of this half of the episode.

Just completely out there and ridiculous work that's strung together by loose threads to create a bigger picture that completely captivates viewers. Does it have to make sense? Definitely not. Does it have to look cool? Absolutely.

I could share a lot more about the episode past this point, but I'll limit myself to this last piece: the tone changes. It's not longer Akira's life or death situation that feels very tight and narrow, it's his escape towards freedom that gives him plenty of space (which is shown in these shots). It's a somewhat subtle difference, but provides a massive gap in feel for viewers.

Well, when you extract it from the chase sequence at large, it's pretty obvious: there's hardly any zombies in frame with Akira.

And so we cruise into the end of the episode with a fight sequence here, and a chase sequence there, leaving off with Akira on his own and making his bucket list of things to do. There's lots more to chat about in regards to direction with things like the first person views and the really impressive blending of 2D and static/3D environments, but I think the point has gotten across that Kazuki's direction, and BUGS FILMS work as a studio, is incredibly expressive, dynamic, and punchy, leaving viewers with quite the promise for this season at large.

My only real concern is if the source material for Zom 100 can continue to deliver ridiculous ideas in spades for BUGS to convert on. I'm rather confident in their ability as a studio since they've worked as a third part/assistant on a number of series, so I'm just really hoping that the creative vision can hold the momentum given to it through this first episode.

Undying Review Cons: - Minimal graphics settings. - Had the controller not work on boot up a fair few times. - Cannot rebind controls. - You get fully voiced cutscenes and sequences then the bulk of the game is text with a few noises or the odd word thrown out. - No auto-scroll for the interactions. - At times Cody asks to do something so you let him and you just get told he can't do it yet. - The tutorial stuff is very sporadic and minimal, I never felt early on like I knew what to do or what the best way to tackle situations was. - I didn't even get told about how to navigate the menus properly and it made progress harder than it should have been. - Despite Steam saying otherwise, the controller does indeed work. - The camera is set and in a game, like this, it makes seeing things very hard and frustrating in combat/stealth. - A lot of additional inventory management like having to equip weapons/tools even when you pick them up, it feels like it should be a pickup and equip or have the option. - Most of the time you are just having Cody watching and learning the whole time. - It takes ages to teach Cody actions and it just drags on too much. - The comforting of Cody is fine in places but it honestly feels like a way to add another layer to a simple task. humanitZ if you’ve ever played project zomboid this is a game you’re going to love what this game is is essentially project zomboid but fully 3D and so much better from the moment I started off the tutorial to this game I was hooked and I just could not get enough of it it is a Zombie Survival game that allowed you to survive explore build scavenge hunt craft Farm fish and a lot more so with that being said strap in and let’s talk about it

From the moment that I booted up humanitZ and started playing the game, I just couldn’t get enough of it. The tutorial itself puts you in a position where you learn everything from point to point, and everything involved in this game is absolutely amazing. I am a massive fan of zombie survival games. I have played games like State of Decay, Seven Days to Die, Dying Light, Project Zomboid, Day Z, and Days Gone. All of these games are ones I absolutely love playing. But for me, the best kind of zombie survival game is the one that allows you to go around, craft things, and do what you need to do to survive. And this is exactly what humanitZ is.

This game thrusts you into a top-down open world survival situation where you have the ability to scavenge inside buildings and find things, build things, craft things, repair vehicles, fuel them up, find a building you like, and essentially board up the windows to make it safe. You can craft your own base of operations, including having things like rain collectors for water, hunting down animals for meat, cooking food, and even farming. The game even allows you to fish, though it can be a little finicky when it comes to the fishing side of things.

This game has everything you need for a zombie survival game, and it’s still in Early Access, which is saying something. And if that’s not enough to hook you into the game, then I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Also, make sure you hit that like and subscribe button because it helps me out a lot.

The basic premise of the game is a zombie outbreak that wiped out civilization. Hordes of what they call “zeeks” essentially go around attacking people and become the apex predator. Your goal is just to survive.

This game is an isometric open world survival game where you have to do everything you can to survive and fight zombies. If you’ve played Project Zomboid and liked it, you’re going to love this game. It feels like what essentially should be the sequel to Project Zomboid. It’s an open world 3D top-down survival game, and like I said, it’s still in Early Access.

When you start the game, you can customize your character. After that, you can choose to do the tutorial or skip it. The game gives you control over various settings through a menu, allowing you to tailor the game to exactly how you want to play it. Once you’ve selected your settings, you then choose your starter spawn, which gives you different starter items.

When you spawn into a location, you start off with nothing but your clothes. You have five pockets to carry items and can carry four holdables, including two large weapons and two small weapons. You can find backpacks to carry more items. Once you collect everything in the area, you can decide to make your base there or find somewhere else.

The controls in the game are simple: WASD to move, mouse for attacking and aiming, F to pick things up, and spacebar to climb or vault over objects. You have to face the object to vault over it.

Survival is a key aspect of the game. You have to manage hunger, thirst, energy, health, and temperature. You can carry both large and small weapons, but large weapons cannot be stored in your bag. Weapons can be repaired using duct tape and gun repair kits. Axes are used to chop down trees, and hammers are used for building. You can also fish and hunt for food. The game has a skill tree for leveling up and upgrading your skills.

The game features a crafting system where you can build different things to aid in your survival. Base building allows you to create a base and reinforce nearby buildings. You can also construct campfires, cooking stoves, and chemistry stations.

Combat involves using weapons to fight zombies. There is an execute button that allows you to quickly take down zombies close to you. Looting is a crucial aspect of the game, as you can gather resources from various sources like buildings, vehicles, and the environment.

In addition to looting, you can also farm in the game. You can plant seeds, water the crops, and use fertilizer to speed up their growth.

The game features a wide variety of vehicles that can be found and repaired. You can also find and siphon fuel for the vehicles.

第５話 - 素材を考える (Speculating Materials)

hello everyone, in this post, i want to reflect on the most recent class session of my critical design course which was about Material Speculations. first off, we had to pick out 4 different materials to represent (the idea of) each story we created previously. then, we should use the gathered materials to create an artifact that somehow captures that respective story. afterward, each student had to select one material for another student who had to use it as the main element for replicating one of the artifacts they had just created. tbh, i did not expect to be doing arts & crafts in this session/course, but it was actually really interesting. i had to approach design & creativity in a different way than i'm used to. it was a different mindset compared to my usual approach in that it was tangible & 3D. overall, i found it challenging but also quite fun ;)

last, we had to create a sketch while listening to music of our choice.

this is the sketch i created :)

so.. perhaps the sketch seems to be incomplete. it kinda is, but that is also purposeful, in that it helps to show a world that is crumbling & falling apart. it is meant to look rough; giving the impression of an abandoned town, devastated & overgrown with plants (which is part of the plants' plan for world domination). it shows a world where plant-made clothes have taken over the wearer's body & mind, essentially turning them into zombies until the parasitic organism has entirely drained the host of life.

While working on this sketch, i was listening to the song "I can't forget you" by rxdlxst. i guess that most people perceive it as just a regular Lo-Fi song (as i was asked by a fellow student), but to me has a different significance. i know this song from a game that deals with the topic of mental health & suicidal thoughts. so for that reason, the song makes me think of depression, hopelessness, feeling broken & grieving over the loss of what once was which i felt was fitting given the story i tried to represent.

When comparing my work & vision to those of the other students, i noticed quite some differences. i was focusing more on the story than an artifact/piece of technology that exists in the story. in my creations, i more so showed the negative effects that the respective technologies (will eventually) have on society. Looking to the next exercise i felt like i kinda did the in-class assignment wrong, but upon reflecting on this session i already got some ideas on how i can use the ideas in my creations for the next assignment. More details about that will be in the next post :P
