Vue and Plant Factory Are Now Free

Yeah, you read that right. That was an announcement that I did not see coming at all. Apparently, E-on Software (now Bentley) is releasing Vue 2023 and 2024 for free, along with Plant Factory. The catch is that beyond security patches, there won't be any new features or releases—basically, they've stopped development on it. Now, it would be nice if they open-sourced Vue's code so that the community could continue development but I don't see that happening anytime soon, if at all.

I'd really like to know the story behind the decision—maybe they realized that by going the route they did with licensing, they practically shot themselves in the foot with hobbyists? Or maybe they didn't care about the hobby market, and rather stupidly thought that they could make up the difference by licensing to studios.

Either way, I'm not sure it matters to me. The last time I tried to use Vue, E-on wanted an additional $200 to activate a license that I had already paid for. I laughed, said "Nah fam, I'm good" and have been learning how to create 3d environments in Blender ever since.

So will I go back? Eh... that remains to be seen. Before the asinine license requirement, the last time I used Vue—the 2015 version—the interface was laggy and the performance left a lot to be desired. This was on a decent system, too. I might download it just to check it out, or just use it (or Plant Factory) to port assets to Blender. Or more likely, I might use Vue to render out sky textures to be used in Blender.

What it boils down to is that for some of us hobbyists who have moved on to better tools, this announcement doesn't change anything. Maybe they shouldn't have alienated the hobbyists as much as they did.

Continuing a trend of “Need a tool, make a tool”, one of the Mugen Forge grinders is out of service due to part issues. The grinders are too old to get replacement parts, and we can’t simply buy a new grinder. The solution was to design and manufacture a replacement part using better design. Here we are using one 3D printer to produce a replacement grinding wheel for a 4” x 36” grinder that will utilize sealed ball bearings instead of solid brass. Quiet, cool, long lasting, and available. We also decided to try our hand and vacuum forming for the production of knife sheaths.
