The Duke of Edinburgh is the husband  and third cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, first cousin of Lady Katherine Brandram,  The Countess Mountbatten of Burma & Lady Pamela (Mountbatten) Hicks & uncle to Princess Dorothea Charlotte Karin of Hesse.  He is also a 1st cousin 1x removed of  Queen Sofia of Spain, King Constantine II of the Helenes and Princess Irene of Greece & Denmark and The Duke of Kent (The Duke of Kent’s mother Marina was The Duke of Edinburgh’s first cousin).

Queen Elizabeth II is a 3rd cousin of The Countess Mountbatten of Burma, Lady Pamela Mountbatten, The Duke of Edinburgh. She is the wife of The Duke of Edinburgh. Through her marriage, she is an aunt to  Princess Dorothea Charlotte Karin of Hesse. She is a first cousin of The Duke of Kent.

Lady Pamela Hicks is a 3rd cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, a first cousin of  The Duke of Edinburgh, her big sister was The Countess Mountbatten of Burma.

Princess Astrid, Mrs. Ferner is a third cousin of The Countess Mountbatten of Burma, The Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth II & Lady Pamela Hicks.

The Countess of Althorne was the last surviving grandchild of Queen Victoria. By her marriage,  The Countess of Althorne was also a great aunt of Queen Elizabeth II-she married QEII’s grandmother’s brother

King Mihai I of Romania was the last monarch of Romania, he was also a great grandchild of Queen Victoria twice-once through his mother (via Victoria, Princess Royal) and once through his father (via Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha)

Sweden’s Count Carl Johan Bernadotte af Wisborg & Count Sigvard Bernadotte af Wisborg were brothers as well as uncles to King Carl XVI Gustaf, Princess Margareta, Mrs. Ambler, Princess Birgitta of Sweden, Princess of Hohenzollern,  Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld,  Princess Christina, Mrs. Magnuson, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Princess Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg & Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.

Il décède en 1980 à Santa Barbara (État de Californie)

Pièce historique et émouvante , d’un proche du Général en chef des armées alliées en Angleterre puis en France ayant servi au SHAEF de l’US Army .

Il accompagnera le Général Eisenhower en France et pour sa visite aux camps de concentration libérés en Allemagne.

Il faisait partie des proches et de son état-major.

A ses côtés le 05 Juin 1944 (1 jour avant le D Day) voir photo prise le 05 Juin (voir photo )au matin par une recherche sur Internet alors qu’ils étaient sortis dehors devant le QG du SHAEF avec le staff de Eisenhower pendant les préparatifs du Jour le plus long : on y voit Thor Smith à côté d’Eisenhower côté américain .

L’autre côté est composé d’anglais du SHAEF.

Il semblerait que Thor porte des bottes de para US .

Ce calot de l’US Air Force porte son grade de Colonel (aigle américain) . Il est de taille US 7 1/2., galonné en noir et argent pour son grade d’officier.

Each year, I turn the volume down in my life just a bit as we approach June 6, D-Day.

This year, it will have been 75 years since the largest seaborne invasion in history took place. Thousands died—and countless others were indelibly changed by the experience.

Here’s a brief story of how my family was affected on this day: The A. M. Smith family of Reno, Nevada, and a tale of three sons on one fateful day.

Alfred “Long Tom” Smith and his wife, Ivan, had four children: three boys and a girl.

« Long Tom » was a miner in Nevada and eventually became state engineer. On D-Day, the couple’s three sons were already commissioned officers in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Their eldest son, Dale Smith, graduated the U.S. Military Academy in the class of 1934. He was fascinated with airplanes. He was assigned to the Army Air Corps and by 1943, he was a bomb group leader with the 384th Bomb Group (8th AF).

Most of his combat missions were over Germany, but in early June, he led bombing missions over France in support of Operation Overlord.

As commander of the 384th, Dale was a decorated flyer, with 31 combat missions (Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with three clusters, and the Croix de Guerre with palm).

Dale went on to serve in leadership positions in Okinawa, as head of the 64th Air Divison and later as a strategic adviser to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired as a major general in 1964, 20 years after D-Day.

The second son, Thor Smith, was my grandfather. He was a newspaperman in the William Randolph Hearst organization. At the bidding of his brother, he applied for and was granted a commission in the Army Air Corps.

Thor rose quickly through the ranks until he was a press officer for Gen. Eisenhower at SHAEF headquarters in England at the time of the invasion. Thor accompanied Eisenhower to Paris and later to Germany during the liberation of the concentration camps.

After leaving the military with the rank of colonel, Thor returned to the Hearst organization. He was assistant to the publisher at the San Francisco Call-Bulletin.

Gen. “Ike” Eisenhower was Thor’s hero. In fact, my mother tells the story of when Ike was invited over to their house for dinner. She and my grandmother worked all day on dinner. When the doorbell rang, she went to answer…then fainted. They put her to bed and she missed dinner.

While his two brothers were on the scene for the invasion, Drew Smith graduated with the rest of his class at U.S. Military Academy at West Point on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Ike’s son, David, was his classmate.

Drew was anxious to fly and soon was checked out to fly the B-29s in Guam. Tragically, as he took off on June 11, 1946, his plane developed engine trouble. The B-29, fully-loaded wtih fuel, crashed into the ocean, killing all aboard.

As D-Day was a pivotal day in Western Civilization, it also affected families like ours at a very basic level. Mine is just one story—and I am proud to share it.

uranus in taurus + climate science: part i

for a couple of years, i have been very interested in the relationship between uranus' current station in taurus and the increasing focus on what's occurring with earth's climate. i was also hoping to make some predictions as to what we are going to see over the next several years given this relationship. so, i decided to compile those findings here for you guys to take a look as well! i want to note that this survey is very U.S. and western-centric, and i welcome any discussion that take into account broader global trends or even just ideas you guys have about the topic!

part i. the pattern

i first took a look at the previous cycle to try and understand a little bit more about the cultural patterns and key events surrounding uranus' movement through the signs, starting with...

uranus in taurus (1934-1941): the great depression; sandwiched between ww1 and ww2, most countries were struggling financially, with the stock market crash of 1929 kicking off the great depression. the financial strain on germany is a significant cause of actions leading to the second world war, which began toward the end of this cycle. out of this crisis came the New Deal, which would completely revolutionize the U.S. economy and financial system. some relevant info/aspects:

10/24/1929 - aries uranus bi-quintile virgo neptune 0°31' (the confident speculation and attitude of the roaring 20's brought on by uranus crumbled as the stock market bubble burst when neptune entered virgo and reality set in)

09/01/1939 - aries jupiter semi-square taurus uranus almost exactly (considered the day ww2 began, sudden change of luck for the worse with taurus representing the economy and aries war)

late 1941 - taurus uranus trine virgo neptune (a lack of scrutiny towards hitler allowed him to continue accruing power)

05/03/1942 - taurus saturn exactly conjunct taurus uranus at 29° (fateful, the beginning of a very dark period of suffering, restriction, and fear)

uranus in gemini (1941-1948): the holocaust + ww2; ww2 was in full swing at this point, and the holocaust began in 1941 after the nazi regime took hold in germany. the holocaust began after a systemic and calculated effort to scapegoat and smear jewish people through the media and government of the time. this was a period of deep unrest and uncertainty, ended only when the war came to a close in 1945. some relevant info/aspects:

uranus was opposite of sagittarius, known for open-mindedness and acceptance of other cultures, ethnicities, etc.

late 1941 + early 1942 - cancer jupiter semi-square gemini uranus (a negative shift of luck)

late 1941 + early 1942 - gemini uranus trine libra neptune (once again lack of scrutiny towards leaders, but this is more favorable for them to manipulate the masses through media, communication, and diplomacy due to the influence of air signs)

1943-1945 - gemini uranus sextile leo pluto (positive transformation is beginning, specifically in relation to new technologies and a societal shift)

01/01/1945 - gemini uranus sextile leo pluto -0°14' (the conclusion of germany's final offensive, where they lost and the war was largely coming to an end with germany's defeat becoming clear)

mid-1946 - libra jupiter trine gemini uranus (a period of good luck and peace post-war)

late 1947 - leo saturn sextile gemini uranus (economies shift towards stability as industries like television, automobiles, and consumer products begin to take center stage; commercials get their start during this year)

from just these two time periods alone, some interesting patterns appear to be emerging. from here on out, we will just examine the meaning of the sign uranus sits in:

uranus in cancer (1948-1955): the baby boom; finally, with the war over marked a distinct and significant shift in attention to the homefront. there was a need to focus on revitalizing the economy and on domestic life. and with that came the baby boom. during this time, the largest number of babies was born. there was also an influx of new household appliances and pastimes at this time. uranus in leo (1955-1961): the civil rights movement; during this cycle there was a huge shift in focus on the rights of black people in America, who were unfairly treated. famous figures like rosa parks, martin luther king jr., and malcolm x rose to fame as they pioneered change, socially and legally. this laid the groundwork for several other civil rights movements to follow. uranus in virgo (1961-1968): women's liberation movement; birth control, women's rights in the workplace, and second wave feminism were all relevant issues in the public. the vietnam war also begins, with its popularity highest during uranus' time in this sign. uranus in libra (1968-1974): anti-war sentiment and peace movements; there is a shift away from blind patriotism as opposition to the war grows. during this time, there is emphasis on peace and harmony, with the hippie subculture beginning to form. tensions between superpowers were also cooled off by this time. uranus in scorpio (1974-1980): a sexual revolution; during this time, there were several things going on, from abortion rights and new forms of birth control, to the beginning of the aids crisis, to gay rights. complete liberation for many groups came during this time, with revolution and rebellion on many people's minds. uranus in sagittarius (1980-1988): laissez-faire capitalism; ronald reagan pushed for trickle-down economics, which saw tax cuts for the rich. this was an explosion of culture, too, with many of the most iconic pieces of media being created at this time. conservative politics began its rise during this time as well, with religious freedom mixing into politics. uranus in capricorn (1988-1995): rebellion against power; the themes of the last two uranus signs culminated during this time, with a shift towards rebelling against power and figures of authority. there was a slow development of technology like video game systems, as well as an influx of companies started by ambitious individuals. uranus in aquarius (1995-2003): the rise of the internet; during this time, the internet became part of daily life for people, who could now connect with anyone across the world. google, amazon, social media, etc. all got their start during this time. people were able to express themselves and learn new things in entirely new ways. uranus in pisces (2003-2010): the market crash; this is the second economic downturn during this cycle, which occurred due to the housing bubble bursting. wall street received a bailout, but many businesses went under and people were forced into desperate situations as a result. uranus in aries (2010-2018): the #metoo movement; during this time, several movements from third-wave feminism to lgbtq+ rights to blm rose to notoriety, and all for good reasons. the injustices of the system were put under a hot spotlight for all to see as illusions of true equality broke down. there is a shift in focus to individual rights and what some may call "identity politics," where there was a move to respect everyone's identity and rights.

Finally got a chance to watch CNN’s Apollo 11: Quarantine and wow is it good!! One big thing I had forgotten (I was 5!) was the bio-hazard suits they to put on. @kaiyves and any other Capsule Heads out there, well worth your time.

Everyone says they’re lucky to have met their partner, and that’s undoubtedly true for me. As for me? The number of things that had to fall into place, even in some cases, not wanting to do something (I didn’t want to move to Splash, and there’s no way we would have met otherwise), are just staggering to me.

We were introduced to Willie by our friends at Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue. It seems that he had "nipped" at someone and his former owner was told that he was  "too aggressive and should be put down". Thankfully they chose a different path and turned him over to EGRR. It's true that in the beginning he was just a tad aggressive, but never dangerously so, and our best guess is that he was the Alpha in his old pack, but he quickly learned his place in our pack he was just fine. Once he figured out that, he was all bark till we told him it was okay and then he'd try to bring you a toy.

Will was never much on the whole Golden Retrieving thing, but he was outstanding at being a Golden Carrier. Water bottles, branches, and after we moved down here the occasional palm frond, if it could fit in his mouth he'd want to carry it (one of our neighbors used to leave out a stick for him with a note that it was Willie's stick and no one else's). Will became a fixture at 5k runs in the Seattle area, always carrying the event t-shirt or a bandana around the start line and out on the course, I seriously have no idea how many people have pictures of Will on their phones but we were always being asked by other if they could take a photo.

In October of 2017 he made the migration to San Diego with us and instantly became a San Diego Dog. The Lovely & Talented worked from home full time which meant he had the run of the place, and with the nice weather he found places to sun himself as well as places keep cool when the occasion called for it.

We had to say goodbye to him today, but as with Eli, Ollie, and Toby, he'll be in our hearts forever. Fair winds and following seas Willie the Wonderdog, you will be missed.
