Maria Callas

Maria Callas in Luchino Visconti's production of La sonnambula, 1955 Her steps were like those of a ballerina, a sylphide tripping on a moonbeam. She was enchanting. She had to lie on a sofa and her pose was exactly period Louis-Philippe - pure 1830. When the villagers arrived with lanterns, the moon faded and the spell was broken. One of the things critics complained about was that I had dressed the villagers like ladies and gentlemen - the women in shades of pink, grey, pearl, and the men in black with white gloves. But Luchino and I had intended to evoke a lost, divine, melancholy era. Critics never understand. - Piero Tosi
