Adjusting
At the other end, we’re startled
to hear the sound of laughter.
The man says, “I went back
to the toilet paper,” laughing.
“Now you know what happens
from trying to get a leg up
on the situation. But if you keep
a sense of humor...” Remember
what happened. Remember
for the rest of your life.

Breaking Your Own Heart (NaPoWriMo 2018-2)
Breaking Your Own Heart #poetry #poems #NaPoWriMo #30Poems30Days
I keep breaking my own heart
every time I run my hand across
his chest and lay it on his heart
to see if it’s still beating.
I want him to look at me at 9am,
the same way he does at midnight through a shot glass
You keep breaking your own heart
every time you notice how
his fingernails show his true anxiety
but you memorize how his hand looks
holding on to yours for relief anyway
because you…

7 anger
I can't stop being angry
and it's starting to grind my teeth at night.
I have heard about shootings
and children
in sentences together
all too often.
I have heard about budget cuts for years,
grew up in a town that would rather
buy football uniforms than new books,
let alone art supplies,
but for desks and teachers to be a commodity...
it hurts a whole different nerve.
but there is still money for the guns,
right?
still time to arm civilians,
but not to hire trained professionals to protect them,
right?
I keep hearing people in my town complain
about the water
about the weather
about their beachfront property
and their BMWs
and their fucking lattes.
I keeps hearing privilege knocking on my neighbors' doors
but not one of their happy little asses will answer
as though it isn't their own God knocking
hoping they won't have to admit it
if they can ignore it.
The weather,
the failing economy,
the tanking chain restaurant industry,
and the disinterest in taking out mortgages is
SURPRISE
not the fault of millennials
or even that of avocado toast.
Mother Nature is tuned in to this episode of history,
so she's probably fucking pissed off, too.
Why the fuck should you get to have legitimate seasons
when the men you assholes seem to repeatedly vote in to office
are the ones who argue legitimacy of sexual assault
while repeatedly raping the planet?
The hole in my head where there used to be a raw, cavity-cratered tooth sends rage into my skull daily
but that headache is nothing compared to watching people divide themselves over social media and social justice
as though they should be mutually exclusive
as though we had a choice on the matter for much longer.
is it possible to stop being angry?
how can I focus more and breathe?
I wish the hostility came to a point
that it could give way to anything but fists of riot rhythm
that it could be something I throw into the passenger seat and speed around with mindlessly until it had all flown out of the windows
but this is not just mine anymore
this is Les Miserables,
a revolution displacing the bourgeois
the casualties aren't televised or tweeted
they aren't heard about until all we have is paper.
I'm still angry.
The water is enema-perfect, folks.
Quadruple filtered.
So pristine you could baptize Satan.
A latte and a coffee aren't the same beverage, either.
Even Satan knows that.
I can't stop being angry
I don't know why you aren't too

Lover,
I am worried
I don’t see myself in your eyes anymore
I fear,
Are you beginning to look at someone else?
