You know, I think many people understand the idea that disability can be a social problem, even construct, in that as more visibility man lead to more accommodations and even educate (regardless of accuracy), but not that disability can still disable regardless of society. Many people understand the idea of a social construct so long as there is still a consise understanding of the social construct, with little wriggle room for nuance and discussion.

#disability #disability advocacy #saw a (classic) discussion about eyesite and glasses - how the prevalence of eyeglasses and the availability of glasses...#...means that glasses cannot ever be an aid. however there is so much that viewpoint misses...#...like i agree to an extent - my vision (though i need glasses) is not what disables me and i survive fine without corrected vision HOWEVER #glasses aren't prevalent everywhere. glasses can't fix all vision differences. glasses are a *temporary* fix #so you correctly assess the fact that the way disability is helped and seen can be affected by your environment...#...but you apply it so broadly that you miss the bigger picture...#...consider that for aids it isn't that they're cheap that makes it better...#...but that you still have to pay for the ability to be AT THE BASELINE ABLED PEOPLE ALREADY ARE BY DEFAULT...#...for glasses it isn't that you can get them for $80 instead of $300 but that you still have to pay for baseline sight...#...and that if your visual difference is severe enough glasses cannot correct your vision and you have to pay even MORE #i am not saying that every single glasses-wearer is automatically disabled by default for having eyesite differences...#...again i don't think my eyesight disables me. but that doesn't mean that it can NEVER disable people even WITH glasses #and this is a classic example i guess because so many people nowadays CAN access glasses

Big Dice Update:

The metre tall dice is very good but it is difficult so say that is bigger than some of the other “biggest” dice I have seen, and now that the technique has been worked out it isn’t that hard to do the math for the next size up, and the sewing is not technically challenging it is just slow, so like, I may as well go for broke in my attempt to make the biggest roll-able D20 there is.

I found some $4 a metre light grey canvas at Spotlight while I was home over the long weekend but they only had 5 metres of it and I needed 10. Fortunately the one up here in the city also had some, so I now have the 10 metres required to make both the 135cm (bigger than the biggest roll-able dice I have found record of online) and 70cm (can fit through a door - just) D20s.

I have ordered a pack of rainbow dyes to colour it (I just want big random rainbow splotchy batik) which hopefully gets here by this weekend, so we can get some spray bottles and make a day of it. I still need to order a hundred+ dollars worth of zipper and twill tape, and then go back to Spotlight for about $30 of the cheap poplin for the tubes.

As always, the noodles will be the last bit bought, because these two will require another 20 of them, and my apartment is quite small.

Oh, and I would like to take the real big one to the medieval fair, which is in less than 4 weeks.

I make such good choices.

#if you have been playing along with the math you will have realised that these two will have a combined cost of about $300 #and yes it would have been a lot cheaper if I had gone with a whatever fabric instead of deciding to custom dye it #but I had a vision with the original one that I set aside so that it would be more cost effective when I wasn't sure that it would work #and while it is very cool I can't help but think that the complexity of the print really distracts from it #so this time I am doing it in my big rainbow untied dye and no-one can stop me #I gave myself a $100 fabric budget and managed to find a cheap enough canvas that even with spending $50 on the good dye it came out under #and the colours might be slightly darker but that is a fair trade off to be using a stronger canvas instead of sheeting for the same price #then I will have the very impressive one and the one that I can get in and out of my apartment without having to disassemble it #although the changes I have planned for the inner tubes should make it much easier to assemble and disassemble #I will have the big one for being impressive and the little one for being small enough that I can photograph the process #oh I have just remembered I need to buy some round spring clips too because the ones I have were a bit finicky

i think im enjoying writing this fic bc i feel like most fics talk about the lore and world building in genshin but very few of the ones i have read have ever rly talked about the actual elements and reactions and the fighting mechanics and its fun in a story setting vs a play setting

#like yes visions are mentioned #and powers and blah blah blah #but i feel like obviously in the actual world of genshin they don't measure their own em like fuck ! i only have 280 em i need at least 300 #al haitham doesnt clown kaveh 4 having less crit damage than him thats obviously not a thing in world vs in play and those 2 r separate #but #ok this fic isnt about em or crit LOL #MY POINTS that very rarely do i see fics talk about how fighting certain enemies works and fitting that into the world building bc sometime #gameplay and lore in genshin are too independent of each other to actually mingle in fics #but im making them mingle and i like to think im doing a good job and its FUN #also btw if anyone is understanding the nonsense i am saying and has any fics that actually work the gameplay into the plot #can yall suggest them #that would be lovely

my very strong philosophy that i need to perceive my characters as real people in order to feel like i can write them at the depth a novel needs + i try to see expand my view of them as far as possible so they have a life an existence that a novel only snapshots a part of + this being a big part of my writers identity bc my relationship with my characters is very important to me is still very real but also very funny now because i've realised when it comes to short fiction i do not give a fuck like that. like i put everything into my characters bc i think making complex characters/relationships is my best skill but they are nothing but names to me (and i barely name my protagonists cause i just dont give a fuck if its not needed) and shadows reflecting an idea i thought was cool. like the way with novels i'll say felix and beau and dorothy are my best friends and they've just granted me access to their stories and i can't imagine how i'd go through life without thinking about them and their lives...then with short fiction the characters are just dolls that i throw out once i'm done with them

#like i feel for them but with my novel characters i can envision them and their life expanded beyond the story #whereas with short fiction characters i feel like im only meant to know them for this moment. like i dont want to go further #meanwhile in novel land i was daydreaming earlier about what felix and dorothy would look like at 60 with grey hair and boring lives LOL #ghost of a 1970s leather daddy was fun because the ghost was like. the only character #the pov was more of a disembodied collective voice that represents a group of people living together but also can be applied #to the wider community #omg when i write an essay on a 300 word piece #between us girls is fun because the pov is also collective but fragmented in a way to give each character their moment #and i feel for them in the sense that i feel like i could write more and get to know them like novel characters but im not going to LOL #i feel like we know just enough about them for the fleeting vibe of the piece to work BUT I WONT SAY ANYTHING ELSE #and the way i dont name so many protagonists....like i just dont give a fuck like that #the way i see flash majority of the time is i'm so tunnel visioned on less of the character and more what they experience #their name doesnt matter unless it's important to the experience of the story

TIL that my right eye had gone haywire and shit

#story time! because im annoying #so today is my first day of clinical posting this semester and im posted to eye clinic #so we did our assessment (which the marks not as high as i expected) which are performing visual acuity test and instil eye drops #and when my friend did the visual acuity test on me my right eye vision is shit even when im wearing my glasses #it was 6/18 (which in the snellen chart i only managed to read until the 3rd row)#my left eye is okay and i thought i was tripping tbh #my ci thought my glasses' power increases as hell so she sent me to the low vision specialist part of the clinic #the ophthalmologist mention a medical condition idk the name and did the test like you would when you want to buy prescription glasses #the one where you wear a weird glasses and they keep on changing the lenses and ask you if its clearer or what #ANYWAY #turns out that when i was younger apparently the shop i made my glasses did the wrong prescription glasses #like my left eye was right but my right eye was wrong and it made my right eye turn to shit #so my power for my left eye is 300 while my right eye is 600+#but they cant give me the 600 on my right eye because then it will autocorrect #like if i occlude my left eye i can see the it clearer but as a pair of glasses it will be hard to read as the words will merge and all #so what the glasses shop i got my latest glasses did is they balanced the power on each side so that i can see better #thats why when i did the visual acuity test my right eye is shit because my glasses is made that way to balance it #its a really good news though because i thought that i need to buy new glasses #he did mention that my 'silau' increases tho but that's fine #the more you know 👀#personal.txt
