Chapter 19B: Heading For A Spin
Here I go and I don't know why I spin so ceaselessly Till I lose my sense of gravity
- Patti Smith, “Dancing Barefoot” (1979) [click here to listen]
Pittsburgh || Early October, 1988
Five knocks had been their signal all tour.
He had told her that she could just walk in – that she was always welcome in his dressing room, that nobody else would disturb them. Yet she still didn’t feel comfortable doing that – respecting his space, and the quiet time he needed to collect himself before every show.
Never mind that these days, more often than not Jamie would bolt the door so that they could love each other quickly and quietly before he went on stage.
She was always ready for him – but tonight, when he answered the door, she knew he would need something different.
At about half of the concerts this tour he would wear a simple black tank top with his jeans. For the other half, he’d forgo a shirt entirely. Not that Claire minded either way, though she did love how the tattoo of her name over his heart would be proudly on display for the world to see.
Tonight he had opted for no tank – which is how she quickly noticed the rapid rise and fall of his chest, as he took very quick and shallow breaths. Eyes wide and unfocused, piercing into hers, impossibly blue amid his black eye makeup.
“Jamie,” she breathed, rushing inside and closing the door. “I’m here. Tell me.”
He swallowed, pushing her against the dressing room wall. Hips flush with hers as her cool hand rested over his heart, fingertips tracing her name inked on his body.
“I…” he gaped, then closed his mouth. Breathing deeply. Eyes wild. “I…Claire…”
“I’m here,” she repeated softly. “I love you. Do you love me?”
“Forever,” he choked. Hand fluttering under her Print t-shirt, thumbnail digging into the bone of her hip.
“I’m here, Jamie. I’m not going anywhere.”
He swallowed.
“Let me call Raymond right now. We have his home number for a reason, that’s what he told us when we called last week. We have time before the show. Everybody can wait. You have a phone in here, right?”
He shook his head. "No. Not tonight."
She frowned. “Did you take anything?”
“No,” he replied instantly. “No. No. Definitely no. Wouldn’t do that to you. To us.”
Her fingertips skimmed down the inside of his arm, and his gaze followed. She turned her hand palm upward. “Do you see your letter on me, Jamie? The one you inked yourself, in Boston?”
“Yes,” he breathed. Reached a fingertip to touch the J tattooed below her thumb.
“Focus on that. How much I love you. And do you remember when I inked my letter on you?”
He turned over his hand to proudly show her the C tattooed below his right thumb. “Your touch. Always with me.” He swallowed. “Every note I play, it’s with me.”
“That’s right, Jamie. I’m always with you, and you’re always with me.” She reached up to caress his cheek, smiling at the rasp of his stubble. “We have time. Do you want to love?”
Her hand drifted down across his chest and rested on the belt loops of his jeans. Waiting. Giving him the choice.
He leaned down for a long, slow, sweet kiss.
She felt the tension seep from his body.
“Want to wait to love you tonight,” he whispered against her lips, hips still flush with hers. Teasing. “But only if you can wait, too.”
She nodded, kissing his lower lip. “I can. But I’ll be thinking about it the whole show. How amazing it will be, later. Will you, too?”
He deepened the kiss. “Fuck yes.”
“And not here,” she gasped between kisses. “Back at the hotel. I want to take my time.”
He bit the side of her neck.
Three pounds on the door. Colum’s signal for five minutes until showtime. Because he knew better than to barge in. The one time he had…well, that was enough.
Jamie pulled away only slightly, his body still pressing Claire’s against the wall. He rubbed the tip of his nose against hers. Breathing deeply. Inhaling the scent of her skin.
“What happened?”
He sighed. “One of the fans at the meet and greet told me that I inspired him to get clean. Go to AA. Deal with his shit. He actually thanked me.”
“Oh, my love.” She kissed him. “That’s so wonderful.”
He sought shelter in the safety of her neck. “I fucking did that, Claire. I can’t believe it. It's...it's unreal.”
She nodded, arms winding tight around his shoulders. “You did do that, Jamie. That’s so amazing.”
“He was so fucking happy. So proud. I didn’t know what to say.”
“That’s all right. You don’t need to say anything. Knowing is enough.”
He kissed her collarbone. “I just can't get over it. For all this time, I've only thought that all that shit I used to do could only have one result. That it was all bad. And now it's messing with my head to know that my fuck-ups actually helped someone. Kind of makes me happy in a weird way that all that shit happened, because it helped him.”
She carded her fingers through his hair. “It makes it worth it. Will you promise to tell Raymond about this?”
He nodded. “Yeah. We need to talk with him about this. Not gonna lie, it's fucking with my head a bit. Because I’m nobody’s hero, Claire. Nobody in this world who has any sense should look up to me. I’m an addict, and a musician who just got insanely lucky.”
“Don’t sell yourself short. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”
Jamie smiled. Thrust his pelvis into hers. Smiling when she whimpered.
“I think it's impossible that with all the records we've sold, and with all the sold out shows this tour, that only that one person has changed their thinking. So what about..."
He swallowed, a bit unsure. Claire ran her thumb over his cheek.
"Maybe...maybe I do something official. Like, launch a sobriety support program for fans. Encourage them to have sober meet-ups with each other.”
She smiled, ecstatic. “That would be so amazing, Jamie. We should tell Colum - he can get the publicity people on it right away. You’ve got a voice – you should use it.”
Four loud knocks.
“Kiss your bride goodbye, Jamie! Everyone is waiting!” Colum yelled through the door.
Claire smiled. “You’re gonna do so great tonight. I’ll be right there with you.”
Jamie smiled. “I do have a voice, Claire. And I sing for you.”
He darted in for a kiss. And another. And another.
Neither heard the door open, until –
“For fuck’s sake!” Colum screamed. “I said kiss her, not swallow her!”
Jamie pulled away. Light. Happy.
“See you after the show,” she smiled.
“Can’t wait,” he grinned. Slung his guitar over his shoulder. Waited for her to find and pick up her medical bag. Gripped her hand. Led her to the stage.

Name: kaminari denki, spark, bolt, static
Age: 17
Pronouns: he/they
Gender(s): demiboy
Orientation: pansexual
Source(s): my hero academia
Role: mood-booster, energetic headmate
Personality: he's pretty upbeat, peppy, and loud. Theyre also incredibly optimistic, to the point that it seems like he's entirely ignoring any possible bad outcome of his actions. They never think before they speak or act, just jumping right into the deep end and then being absolutely shocked that his actions have consequences. Due to all of this, and his inability to sit still, he's seen as rather stupid and fidgety and sometimes childish. However, he's actually rather smart. He's just an idiot at the same time.
Interests: physics and engineering (he's a huge science nerd and loves finding out how things work behind the scenes), loves researching about the mechanics of rollercoasters and loves dyeing his own and other people's hair.
Extra info: they frequently type in all caps and uses gen z/gen alpha language (says sigma, fire, skibidi toilet, rizz, etc.) The brain rot is terminal I fear /j. Basically the annoying little brother that lives to poke everyone around them.
Faceclaims:
Name: eijiro kirishima, spike, onyx
Age: 16
Pronouns: he/him
Gender(s): trans man
Orientation: bisexual with a huge preference for men
Source(s): my hero academia
Role: confidence booster, protector
Personality: he's got a rock solid sense of right and wrong and isn't scared to stand up for himself and others. He can be a bit dense at times, completely missing the point of jokes or when someone's flirting with him, which has led some people to think he's stupid. Academically, he's not exactly the brightest, but he always puts the maximum amount of effort into everything he does, even studying.
Interests: sports (especially football, but his favorite sport to play is table tennis because he's so good at it), he really likes the outdoors and taking hikes/long walks, he's a bit of a gym bro and gets really into eating healthy and working out.
Extra info: loves liberty spikes (the hairdo) and would absolutely try to get the body's hair to look like that at least once if possible. He also enjoys painting his nails and when texting, he uses keyboard smashes to convey laughter instead of just typing "lol" like a normal person. Also! I could see him being a spider-man kin <3

Here’s the blank background bc I rly like it:
And here’s some more insight to my choices:
In addition to the challenges I listed above I also tried my best to cast everyone as actors who were the same race as the character which I had some trouble with in some cases Geeta but it was really fun to go down voice actor rabbit holes looking for people who fit the bill :O another thing I was keen on was not looking for EXACT character matches, but looking for SUPER close voices who had VAs that I think would be perfect fits. Also tried not to cast everyone based on performances from one piece of media (no shade to ppl who’s entire voice claims lists are just ppl from danganrompa or whatever I just wanted to challenge myself) but I kinda failed step 1 bc I have so many ppl who were in avatar LMAO
Arven - I spent DAYS trying to find someone who worked for him and in the end I’d say this is maybe 90% correct, I think his voice is a little deeper but tbh I think Taylor Gray could do it.
Nemona - i havent seen anything with Aimee Carrero in it in literal YEARS but the SECOND I saw nemona in game my first thought was adora’s voice, I always try to avoid type-casting but in this case it isn’t just “the characters have similar personalities” the voice truly fits imo.
Penny - i feel like everyone else thinks Penny’s voice is WAY higher pitched than I think it is, Like yeah voices like dendy from okko’s work on a little frog girl but Penny’s like. 16. I think she’s a lot more monotone and sarcastic than people give her credit for. Bex Taylor-Klaus (Pidge from Voltron) was also in the running but I think Rae Gray fits just a tad better.
Clavell - when looking for Clavell’s voice I realized there aren’t NEARLY enough weird old guys in media where are they. Pretty happy with my choice, I think he could pull off his weirdness (I haven’t decided if it would be funnier if Clive has some weird horrible fake accent or if he just sounds exactly like Clavell so take your pick on that one)
Sada - I played violet so I was a little nervous casting for a character I know literally nothing about but I DO know she’s a hot lady and you know who else is a hot lady? Kya tlok.
Turo - Reddit Incel who’s voice claim is The Tumblr Sexyman was too funny for me to pass up, one of the most unrealistic claim here for sure but I don’t care that’s what he sounds like to me <3
Dendra - i don’t even remember the rabbit hole I went down to find cass from tangled, I’ve literally never watched the show but the second I heard her voice I was like “THERES DENDRA WAHOO”. While looking for dendra voice claim I found Eri’s too so that was fun :O
Hassel - all I knew going into this voice search was that he needed to sound like he could burst into dramatic tears at any moment and Sidon checked that box. I don’t really know why I feel like he has a german accent but it just works.
Jacq - he already has a canon voice, I couldn’t find his VA (I could only find the VA of the other character from the ad) but apparently others don’t like this voice, I think it’s perfect tho <3
Miriam - source: trust me Miriam’s my wife /j for reals I almost added that I think she has a light australian accent but in my head it’s so light it’s barely noticeable so I left it out.
Raifort - I STILL need to watch toh but I watched a lot of clips looking for voices for all these characters, I’m not really sure why I feel like Elizabeth Grullon’s voice fits but imo it fits like a glove.
Saguro - going back to Clavell’s notes WHERE ARE ALL THE WEIRD OLD MEN IN MEDIA??? Anyways I’ve seen exactly 2 episodes of jjba but after looking around for a voice for a while with no luck joseph popped into my head and I BOLTED to get voice examples bc he’s EXACTLY the voice I was picturing
Salvatore - I think I spent the most time out of everyone looking for his voice, I think it was about 3 days? (Granted I wasn’t spending every hour of every day looking for his voice but it was still a long time) I ended up going down a HUGE rabbit hole of media ive never heard of and people who I’ve never seen and ended up at Conrad Haynes. It goes to show that it’s worth it to put the time into searching bc his voice is near PERFECT (needs that feench accent tho…)
Tyme - originally I was gonna have tyme and ryme both voiced by Uzo Aduba until I found out that they weren’t twins??? I LOVE the movie meet the robinsons so originally Mildred from that film was gonna be my voice of choice, until I looked at what else she was in and realized Dorthea Williams was EVEN MORE perfect. Love you Amelia Bassett <3
Atticus - Atticus was a PAIN to cast bc I’m STILL not sure how old he is. Is he 16? Is he 56? Who knows. Eclair Cookie works but I’m only like 70% happy with it? I haven’t been able to find someone who fits better tho. Fun fact Zeno Robinson (Eclair’s VA) has already been in pokemon a TON of times so I broke my own rule a little here.
Eri - I feel like a lot of people think eri’s voice is WAY deeper than I think it is, I see a lot of grenda (gravity falls) voice claims going around and I just think that’s TOO deep. Like I said in the dendra portion I actually thought of Eva first for her before realizing her voice fit eri WAY better.
Giacomo - all i knew looking for a voice for him was that he had a new york or boston accent (if I could picture the voice saying “AYE IM WALKIN HERE” than i knew it wasn’t right /hj) so ofc my first thought was scout. This was one of my shortest searches for a voice for a character who I didn’t immediately have a solid idea for when reading their dialouge, it took like less than a half hour LMAO
Mela - hearing a specific voice in my head paid off for this one, it took me a while to figure out where the voice was from but once I figured out it was suki I had a category 5 eureka moment.
Ortega - I didn’t even have to read his dialogue to pinpoint his voice literally the second I saw him for the first time in a cutscene I KNEW he was gonna be Alexander James Rodriguez. fun fact this actually made me get around to watching lazy in space, pretty good show 8/10
Brassius - i sat there going down voice rabbit holes looking for his voice and then randomly the Shamboozle clip came up in my YouTube recommended and it’s like Brassius’s design was made around mega knight voice.
Grusha - before anyone gets on me I KNOW grusha is a guy and Avi Roque is nb but when I was listening to toh clips to find other characters voices Raine’s stuck out to me as EXACTLY how grusha sounds in my head (minus the russian accent). I think grusha can be little a nb. as a treat.
Iono - I really thought when I went looking for sv voice claims that tiny tina iono would be like. The norm. It apparently isn’t and I’m an outlier here but tina SOUNDS like she has sharp teeth Ashly Burch could make iono everyone’s fav in the anime
Katy - after I cast her (which was a funny casting because I’ve never seen fim I just stumbled upon her because the only character with a southern accent I could think of was applejack so I assumed her family probably had it too LMAO) I went and looked at other casting and I’ve seen her katy voice claims of like. 4 different mlp characters why did we all decide she’s a pony
Larry - THE ENTIRE REASON I DID THIS. Why do you all think he sounds like some sexy emo anime twink???? Before I even knew he was a GYM LEADER and he was just sitting there at the bar I pictured him sounding like the pixies. That spiraled me into thinking “If that’s uncommon than will people get how I think the rest of them sound without examples??” So I did This. Seriously where are you guys getting emo boy from he’s like 50 LMAO
Kofu - my immediate thought seeing him for the first time was mr krabs. It never changed the entire time I played. Looked around and it turns out most ppl don’t even think he has a pirate voice. vaultin veluza.
Ryme - I’m still not sure why Udo Aduba was my first thought but it’s not changing any time soon she has such RANGE she could def pull off Rymes intensity.
Tulip - tulips voice was so specific in my head only to realize it was bc i heard the voice thru my entire childhood. Cleo and tulip are both the “posh popular girl who I think is really annoying and unlikable even tho the entire rest of the fanbase likes them” type of people so this is very much a type cast but also I think her voice fits UNGODLY well.
Geeta - Geeta was a PAIN to cast bc I essentially ran out of voice rabbit holes to go down. I think Jen Cohn is pretty accurate though, authoritative but not angry yknow.
Poppy - another near instant casting the second I saw her. I grew up with tawog so I think little girl who’s incredibly smart for being like 4 and I think anais.
Rika - a VERY tough casting to wrap things up, I can usually pinpoint a voice that I know that’s a little close to how I think they sound but for Rika I had nothing, I know Wendy (gravity falls) is a popular take but it was a Close But No Cigar situation. I still need to watch chainsaw man but i heard this character and saw their intro scene and was like. Yeah that’s about right.
my pokemon sv voice claims!
Challenged myself to only cast ppl who have done voice work before and to mostly cast ppl who haven’t been in Pokémon before and for the most part they’re SUPER close to how they sound in my head
#i think about half of these are realistic. i mean statistically zeno robinson will probably be SOMEWHERE in the anime#and I think for some of the wrong ones I got the characters will be voice by different people but they’ll sound EXACTLY the same#that’s another reason I did this too#bc I remember when the sun and moon anime came out literally every character sounded exactly to a T how they did in my head#ESPECIALLY LILY THAT WAS FREAKY THEY PUT MY OPINION ON A SCREEN FOR MILLIONS TO HEAR LMAO???#so this post is proof for future reference of like. i am right and i always am live laugh love#i do think they’ll get an actual singer to play ryme and MAYBE her and tyme will be played by the same person#just to cut costs#and I know it’s one of the most unrealistic castings here but PLEASE Clancy Brown Kofu nintendo I’m begging 🙏🤞#sassy speaks#pkmn

The Heart Underneath: Chapter 10
***This fic is being posted simultaneously on FanFiction.net and Ao3. I originally began it in 2016, and then life was life, and now I’m bringing it back because it deserves to be finished! Rating M as of Chapter 10 ***
When I first started thinking about this story, way back in 2013, this was an anchor chapter that developed early on. I've had it written in my head for years now, and this is my favorite one so far. I love, love, love John and Martha.
I listened to this song on repeat while writing this one, particularly starting at 3:30 (I Have Loved You Wrong by The Swell Season) … that part of the song is the J&M soundtrack ❤️
Chapter 9 Chapter 11
The Heart Underneath
Chapter 10: 16 and 17
John was arranging boxes in the grocer stock room one early summer afternoon when Mrs. Averill popped her head in, smiling at him.
“John, you have a visitor. You should take your tea break early.”
From the look on her face he knew it could only be one person. He ran a hand through his hair and stood in the doorway behind the counter for a moment, watching Martha across the room. She was talking to her friend Lily, who worked part time at the store, selling fabrics and sewing supplies. They were whispering to each other over a bolt of ribbon, Martha’s face animated as she spoke.
John walked around the counter and then towards Martha, leaning against the counter top next to her.
“More ribbon? When I am going to see this mysterious dress, love?” John said, watching Martha’s face light up at his voice.
“On my birthday, of course, Johnny.” She responded, and lost herself in his eyes for a moment.
“I’ll come by after my shift, Martha? I’ll leave you two alone.” Lily laughed and walked over towards Mrs. Averill across the store.
Martha tucked the ribbon into the sack she was carrying and John touched her waist, guiding her out of the store. Lily and and Mrs. Averill watched as the two communicated in physical touch only, and Mrs. Averill was reminded of the morning she’d first seen the pair, years earlier.
“All of Small Heath has a bet as to when they get married. My money’s on next year.” Lily commented.
“I’m not a betting woman, but if I were, I’d put my coins down on longer than that. John doesn’t want to rush it, he wants her to live her life.” Mrs. Averill responded thoughtfully.
Outside, John and Martha sat down on the bench in front of the store, sitting as closely as possible.
“I brought you something.” Martha said, handing John a wrapped up package.
He opened it to find two sausage rolls, his favorite. He bit into one with excitement as Martha laughed softly at the expression on his face.
“Mar, I think you should do all the cooking. Between Polly and Ada, neither one can even come close to you.”
“How about I promise to make you sausage rolls twice a week. I already promised Finn once a week, so that’s three times a week for both of you.”
John laughed and put his arm around Martha’s shoulder, kissing the top of her head.
“That’s a good deal for me, love. I’ll have to start working with Finn more often.”
“Polly had another … discussion with me this morning, I assume because my birthday is coming.” Martha said pensively.
“I think we’re both going to get that speech up until our wedding day. I’m still surprised she let you move upstairs.” John responded, pulling Martha into him as she leaned her head on his shoulder.
After Greta’s services, Polly, Ada, and Finn had returned to the Shelby house. While the house was as they’d left it, it became clear to Polly things had changed significantly between John and Martha. From her own experience, she knew that trying to keep them apart was going to just make them fight for it more, and so she allowed the two to continue their routine. And even allowed Martha to move her clothes and belongings up into John’s room.
Polly’s plan rested on the hope that the two would continue to be responsible. She made it clear she didn’t want to help raise new Shelby babies any time soon. Things hadn’t gone quite that far between John and Martha yet, but they respected the warning.
Now with Martha’s 16th birthday just weeks away, John knew the conversation was coming.
************************************************************************
The morning of Martha’s birthday, John woke up early with the sunrise. Martha was still asleep, her head buried in his shoulder, their legs tangled together. He gently ran his fingers through her hair, watching her sleep. He wanted to memorize the entire day, how the small constellation of freckles across her nose looked, how soft her hair was, how her eyes captivated him every second.
Martha slowly awoke to find John watching her and she smiled sleepily. This is what she would remember most in hard times, the way he looked first thing in the morning, in the quiet before the chaos of their days. His grey blue eyes communicating all his thoughts to her, the weight of his arm around her waist, the warmth of his leg against hers.
“Happy Birthday, love.” John said softly, kissing Martha gently with his hand still in her hair.
“Love you forever, Mar.” He whispered in her ear, as she wrapped her arms fully around him.
“Love you always.”
They laid wrapped up together in bed until they heard the house stirring below them. John finally got up and started dressing while Martha sat in bed, watching him.
“Like what you see?” John smirked as he caught her eye over his shoulder.
“Oh, I certainly do.” Martha replied deviously.
It was a side that few outside the Shelby family even knew existed, but Martha could be fiery when she chose to be. John loved that he was the one who saw that in her all the time, not just when someone else’s actions pulled it out of her. He walked over and kissed her again, while he heard Ada calling up the stairs.
“Ada’s looking for you. Better go down before she barges in and is scarred for life.” John said as he pulled Martha up out of bed.
“Ada and Martha birthday routine, you know that.” Martha commented lightly as she walked out the door and down the stairs.
John waited a few moments and then pulled a small box from behind the dresser, slipping it into his pocket.
An hour later, John was trying to occupy a restless Finn while the girls and Polly were upstairs. The Ada and Martha birthday tradition was started by their mother. Peggy would bring each girl a special breakfast tray on their birthday, which they would eat together in their room and then get dressed up for the day. Polly had continued it after Peggy’s death, and it meant a lot to the girls.
Upstairs, Ada was putting the finishing touches on Martha’s hair, with a length of the same green ribbon that trimmed her white dress, the color matching her eyes. The two had worked on the dress for weeks, piecing together lacework and light fabric to create an ethereal piece of art.
“You look like an angel, Martha. John is going to love it.” Ada sighed.
“Absolutely beautiful, my girl. Happiest of birthdays. Now should we go relieve the boys, who are surely bored?” Polly said as she hugged Martha and felt tears in her eyes.
Downstairs, Arthur and Tommy had just snuck into the kitchen door, motioning for John and Finn to stay quiet. They wanted to surprise Martha, who thought they were out of town working on a betting arrangement.
“We’re coming down!” Ada yelled as she and Polly joined the rest of the family at the bottom of the staircase. It was important to everyone that Martha felt special on her birthday, especially given all the tragedy she’d been through.
Martha stepped out onto the landing and Ada clapped with excitement. Tommy smiled, his first real smile since Greta’s passing, as Martha started down the stairs. He remembered the tiny girl he had carried around Small Heath, who always fell asleep in his arms.
All John saw was Martha, looking indeed angelic as the layers of her white dress moved with every step she took, her blonde hair cascading down in soft curls. He stepped back, unable to stand for a moment, and felt Arthur’s hand clamp down on his shoulder, keeping him steady.
Martha smiled at John, their eyes met, and this moment, perhaps more than any other, remained in perfect clarity in his memory for the rest of his life. His girl, who he loved more than anyone else in the entire world, walking down the stairs on the morning of her birthday, and only looking at him.
Martha, too, would dream about this moment in the weeks and months and years that John was in France. The way he looked standing by the bottom step, Arthur holding his shoulder. His eyes burning into her, everything he was feeling washing over her.
“Pretty Martha!” Finn shrieked with excitement, breaking the spell that had fallen over the house.
They all laughed and John stepped forward to take Martha’s hand down the final few steps. Polly silently ushered the rest of the family into the kitchen, to give them a moment alone.
“You look beautiful, my love.” John murmured, pulling Martha close to him.
He turned her towards the wall, catching a private spot in the hall, and kissed her with everything he had. The world went quiet, he only heard the sound of her heartbeat. Remember this.
The Shelbys spent the morning celebrating Martha’s birthday with a small cake that Ada tried valiantly to bake, and they all praised her efforts. They each gave Martha a small gift, tokens of how much they loved her. Finally, it was John’s turn and he nervously pulled the box out of his pocket.
A look was shared between the older siblings and Polly, which was completely missed by John and Martha. Sitting, as always, next to each other, he turned towards her and handed her the box. She opened and gasped slightly.
Inside was a gold Celtic knot pendant on a rounded chain. Martha slowly pulled it out of the box and held it up in the light, catching an engraving on the back. She turned it over to read it.
J + M
1900
“The year we met. I love it, Johnny.” She whispered and looked up into John’s eyes. His face was flushed with embarrassment but he smiled and nodded.
He gently took the chain from her hand and unclasped it, and then went around to the back of her chair, draping the chain over her head. He fiddled for a moment with the clasp and then let it settle against her chest. Martha took his hand in hers and smiled up at him.
“Absolutely beautiful.” Polly said wistfully, even she was taken by the scene in front of her.
Ada got up to take a closer look and the spell broke again. Tommy and Arthur looked at each other, both had thought John was making a grander gesture and were relieved. But they also knew the couple was practically married anyway. A proposal would just be a formality at this point.
************************************************************************
Later that afternoon, John and Martha took one of their long walks. She had spent a few hours with school friends, and it seemed like everyone in Small Heath knew it was her birthday. John had known exactly the moment she’d want to be alone with him, and showed up outside her friend’s house. The girls all watched as they walked down the lane, and with Martha’s white dress flowing behind her and John’s suit, it could’ve been a wedding scene.
“You look nice.” Martha commented as she took in John’s pressed suit and tilted cap.
In fact, it was the most handsome he’d ever looked to her, and she felt suddenly a little shy. Of course, she had always found him handsome, but there had been a question she’d been wanting to ask that day. And him looking that nice for her, and her only, heightened how she felt.
“Wanted to look good for my girl on her birthday.” John said, smiling at her as he turned to catch her eye.
“Well, you certainly do. More than good. More than nice.”
Something in her voice caught John’s attention, and he steered her towards a quiet back alley. Every so often, she would say or do something that would remind him that they were growing up. And their relationship would become continually more complex and intertwined.
“You like what you see?” John asked, his voice dropping with sudden desire.
“I love what I see.” Martha replied, her hand reaching up to touch his face.
John stepped closer and he could read it in her eyes. A topic they’d touched upon several times. He had been waiting for it to be the right time. For her to be ready for it to be the right time. He knew it was now.
But for all the unspoken conversations they’d had in their lives, Martha felt like she had to say this out loud. To be clear about exactly what she wanted and needed. How she wanted and needed him.
“I’m ready, John. I know there’s risks. But I want us to be together, in that way.”
“Are you sure, darlin’? If … if me trying to avoid you getting pregnant doesn’t work, your whole life will change. Mine would too, but yours so much more.”
“I’m sure. As long we’re together, everything will be alright. Tonight?”
John stared at her a moment longer, feeling like he was going to pass out. He was 17 years old after all, it’s not like he hadn’t thought about it a thousand times. And they had done pretty much everything but that. They were well versed in each other’s pleasure. But this was so much more.
“Tonight.” He confirmed, and turned to slowly lead her back home.
************************************************************************
John went up to his room before supper and quietly moved their mattress and blankets onto the floor. The last thing he needed was the ancient bed frame making noises that would arouse suspicion. And he thought Martha would find it both funny and adventurous.
The two continued their evening routines as normal, John helping Finn to bed, Martha sitting in the kitchen while Ada and Polly cleaned up. Neither would let Martha lift a hand on her birthday. Tommy had moved into a small bedsit a few streets over, and once the rest of the house went to sleep, they could be alone.
John took his time locking up the house later on and then slowly climbed the stairs to join Martha in their room. She stood in front of the window as she often did, the moon bright enough to catch the pendant around her neck. John closed the door firmly and walked over to her.
“Dance with me.” He said, voice hoarse with need, taking Martha’s hand in his.
She smiled and placed her other hand on his shoulder, as he wrapped his arm around her waist. They quietly moved back and forth across the floor, and she laughed softly as he turned her out for a spin. He kissed her, moving both of her arms around his neck and pulling her in tightly. His hands found the buttons on the back of her dress, and he carefully undid every single one that she had just as carefully sewed on.
He slowly pulled down the dress to her waist, and helped her step out of it before laying it over the back of a chair. They continued to undress each other without a word, but every touch spoke how they felt. He kneeled before her on the mattress, taking his time to remove her shift. His breath was shallow, and he rested his head against her stomach, trying to regain some control.
After a moment, she lifted his head up and nodded to him. He ran his hands up her ribcage and to her breasts. He could feel her breath quicken as he put his mouth to her soft skin and and her fingers dug into the back of his head.
He gently pulled her down onto the mattress and rid himself of the last of his clothes. Their lips met again and with his hand on the back of her head, he untied the ribbon from her hair and laid her back onto a pillow. She pulled him down to her, and he ran a hand up her thigh, moving her leg out to give himself room.
From many previous nights, he knew the exact spot on her neck that made her sigh his name, and she knew the spot behind his ear was just as sensitive. He knew the exact sound she would make as he slid a first and then a second finger inside of her. The sound that drove him crazy now made him moan quietly in anticipation.
“It’s time, love.” Martha whispered in his ear.
John nodded and took a moment to ease his fingers out and position himself. He would later admit to her that he was slightly terrified as he slowly began to push into her. Martha bit into his shoulder, and he waited a few seconds before entering her completely. The sensation was overwhelming for both of them.
Martha called out his name as quietly as she could, and he began to move again, finding a rhythm as she moved her hips with his. He kissed her neck down to her collarbone, and then placed his mouth over her nipple, biting down gently. She moaned with pleasure beneath him and he could feel her tightening around him, like she did around his fingers.
“Johnny, I love you.” She said breathlessly as she came, and he watched her eyes flutter back.
It was enough to send him over the edge and like every cautionary story he’d heard, he pulled out just before. Martha placed her hand over him as he moaned into her hair, hoping the pillow beneath would muffle the noise. He lay collapsed on top of her for a moment as she ran her fingers through his messy hair.
“I love you, darlin’, so much.” He murmured into her ear.
He understood now why so many men must say that to women after. And he was glad that they had said it a thousand times before. He meant it in the moment, but he also meant it forever.
After a few minutes, he rolled over and pulled Martha onto his chest.
“Are you ok?” He said quietly, worried he’d hurt her.
“I am more than ok. And I like this floor set up, very smart of you.” Martha responded laughing.
“We certainly did not need any interruptions, because I was not going to be able to stop.” John said which made Martha laugh even more.
“Was that … was that what you expected?” She asked curiously, tracing her finger over his forearm and looking up at him.
“Better, so much better. You?”
“I can understand how it would be scary. But now I also understand how wonderful it can be with someone that you love. And that you trust.”
“You’re always safe with me, Mar. Always.” John looked down at her, and like every day, he knew the whispers were true. Married or not, their souls belonged to each other.
They lay in comfortable silence for awhile, taking in the moment, each recognizing how their relationship would shift and deepen because of it. John caught sight of the green hair ribbon the floor beside him and picked it up.
“Can I keep this?”
“Of course.” Martha smiled and started to close her eyes, not able to fight sleep any longer.
John reached up and gently put the ribbon on a small side table, making sure to move it to an empty tin case the next morning.
He would carry that ribbon next to a photo of Martha and himself, in that same tin, across the channel to France. The tin would stay in his inside left breast pocket every moment that he was a soldier. Every second of every battle he fought in. Every day after his heart shattered in 1919, he carried it with him.
And on his death bed, the ribbon would be found in his hand with that same photo, the tin case resting above his heart.

Chapter 31
Spencer knocked on the LaMontagne’s front door.
He heard Jo screaming, “Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!” on the other side.
He chuckled, opening the door after hearing JJ yell “it’s open” from another room.
Jo bolted towards him and he scooped the little girl up in his arms.
“How excited are you to meet your baby brother and sister?” he grinned.
“This excited!” Jo outreached her arms to the widest they could possibly go.
“Well, they are very excited to meet you too. They are back at the hospital, resting with Mommy,” Spencer smiled.
“Can I come?” Henry asked.
“You’re going to come later Henry with your mom and dad plus the rest of the team,” Spencer explained.
JJ came around the corner, “Yes, Henry. We will go later. We’re going to give them some family time first.”
“Bye guys,” Spencer waved.
“Thank you Auntie JJ for letting me sleep over,” Jo said, “See you later, Henry!”
“Anytime for a kid with such good manners,” JJ smiled.
-
Spencer set Jo down right in front of the door to your hospital room.
“Okay so we are going to be extra gentle with the twins and Mommy and use our quiet voices,” Spencer reminded Jo.
Jo nodded and Spencer opened the door.
“Hi, Baby J,” you smiled, you were holding Ollie because you just finished breastfeeding him.
“Love, Ophelia is in her bassinet right there if you want to get her,” you told Spencer.
Spencer wasted no time picking Ophelia up because he already missed the babies after just a quick ride to JJ’s. He sat right on the edge of the bed.
Jo crawled into Spencer’s lap so she was right underneath him holding the baby.
“This is Ophelia, Princess. She was born 3 minutes earlier than Ollie,” Spencer rested the baby in her lap so she could hold him with his help.
“Hi, Ophelia,” Jo whispered, leaning down to give the baby a little kiss on the forehead.
“Oh that’s very sweet of you,” you smiled, watching the adorable scene unfold in front of you.
Meanwhile, Spencer was a blubbering mess like his body had gone into cuteness overload. You handed him a kleenex.
Oliver made a soft whine in your arms.
“Jo, I think your brother wants to see you now. You will have plenty of time with the both of them in the future, I promise,” you said.
Jo gently crawled into your lap and you set Ollie down in her lap, “So this is Oliver or Ollie for short.”
“Like the baby elephant in the book?”
“Yes, that was all your idea,” you confirmed.
Jo pressed another soft kiss to Oliver’s forehead.
“I love them a lot,” Jo beamed, switching her focus back and forth between the two babies.
“Daddy and I got you something to wear when the team comes if you want, Baby J,” you motioned to Spencer who grabbed a gift wrapped in dinosaur wrapping paper.
You got Jo a little something because you didn’t want her to feel left out since she was used to having you and Spencer’s full undivided attention but now she was going to have to share it with the twins.
Jo unwrapped the gift, revealing a white shirt with ‘big sis’ written on it in colorful letters.
Jo beamed, “I wanna put it on now please.”
Spencer handed you Ophelia before he helped Jo change into her new shirt. Then, she leaned over the babies in your arms and began blowing raspberries to entertain them. They couldn’t laugh yet but they seemed to be enjoying it. Ollie was staring up at his sister curiously while Ophelia was gurgling happily.
-
You heard a rapid knocking on the door and it swung open as soon as Spencer said “Come in!”
A flash of glitter and pink letting out an excited squeal sped past him. Penelope was in front of you before you knew it. She was setting two teddy bears with sweater vests and a bouquet of flowers down on your table.
“These are for the babies,” she gestured to the fuzzy bears, “and those are for you,” she pointed to the bouquet.
“Thank you so much,” you smiled, “you can put them in the twins’ bassinets if you want.”
“I don’t get a gift,” Spencer fake pouted.
“How many babies did you push out of your vagina yesterday, Boy Wonder?” Penelope retorted.
“Well technically she had a C-section but point taken,” he grinned, “The babies are the greatest gift I could ever get anyways.”
“Okay, names! I need names to call my godbabies!” she demanded.
“Yes since we have kind of unofficially decided that Jo’s godparents are JJ and Will. You and Derek will be the godparents of the twins,” you smiled, “whose names are…” you looked to Jo.
“That one is Oliver or Ollie. I named him!,” she proudly pointed to the little baby in your arms.
“And this is Ophelia,” Spencer tilted the baby in his arms slightly to give the team a better look at her face.
“Awwww,” the team smiled.
“Okay, everyone will get a chance but we’ll let the godparents get first dibs at holding the twins,” you said, starting to hand Ollie to Penelope.
“Wait!” Spencer exclaimed, “Please use the hand sanitizer first. I don’t know where you people have been,” Spencer joked.
Spencer bought baby-safe hand sanitizer in advance and put it in the hospital bag. He was very insistent on everyone using it to keep the twins healthy.
After everyone passed around the sanitizer, Penelope reached for Ollie once again, “Gimme this little cutie pie.”
Spencer carefully passed Ophelia to Derek.
“Hi, Ollie. I’m going to have a lot of fun spoiling you,” Penelope beamed.
“Derek, are you crying?” Hotch asked.
“No,” Derek adamantly denied, still not breaking his gaze away from Ophelia in his arms, “It’s just allergies.”
“Oh, then I should probably pass Ophelia to Emily so you don’t get her ‘sick’,” Spencer grinned.
“No! Five more minutes,” Derek insisted, “Ophelia, I’m your Uncle Derek. Can you say De-rek?”
“Morgan, she was born 16 hours, 35 minutes, and 53 seconds ago. She is not going to be talking already,” Spencer stated.
“Hey, you never know with your smarty pants genes, Kid.”
“Reid, coincidentally, today marks the end of your year leave from the BAU. I’m going to need an answer by the end of the day if you’re returning or not,” Hotch stated, “We’ll support you either way but I already have a feeling about your answer.”
Spencer made eye contact with you and then he looked at Jo leaning over Ollie in Penelope’s arms and JJ and Emily playing peek-a-boo with Ophelia in Derek’s arms.
“As much as I love you guys, I can’t come back. I think my heart would physically be ripped out of my chest if I had to leave my family for an extended period of time,” Spencer chuckled.
You smiled softly up at him and he grabbed your hand, kissing it softly with all the admiration and love in the world.
