Do you have any advice for first time cat parent? (Human parent of cat, not cat parent)

Congrats on getting a kitty!!!!!

If you are getting an adult cat I would say just be really, really patient with letting them acclimate! I know it can take weeks and weeks for them to feel comfortable. If you are getting a kitten (we got all 3 of ours as kittens) they usually take way less time to acclimate and feel comfortable in the new space, maybe just a couple days depending on how big your house is and if you have other animals that need to be introduced safely to a new kitten.

Just some things that come to mind:

-let them come out of the cat carrier on their own time

-make sure their litter is accessible, not too high for a kitten to get in, if you are getting a kitten, and that they know where and what it is by setting them in it a few times. Kittens amaze me with how smart they are and how quickly they are house trained compared to puppies. I’m going to brag about my three and say they’ve never had an accident more than a few days after coming home with us.

Remington is a large, stocky 28 year old. Hes very stoic, and keeps to himself 99% of the time to avoid spending time around other people. He is also a wolfboy, and can have pure black wolf ears & tail. He is hot headed, and very stubborn, and will not tolerate others pushing him or his mate, Levi around. He loves to play on his natural intimidation. He has shoulder length black hair, and radioactive green eyes that always glow, however the light dims significantly if hes ill. He also has 1" red tunnels in his ears, the bridge of his nose pierced, as well as two piercings on each side of his bottom lip.

Anything else that makes them sneeze?:

He does have a photic sneeze reflex and is sometimes sensitive to temperature changes.

Do they get sick often?:

As strong, and healthy as he looks and acts on the outside, poor Remi catches a cold every few weeks, unless hes been extremely lucky. As much as he tried to deny the existence of the "Man Flu", hes a big baby every time he gets sick again.

How bad is it usually?:

Every cold involves at LEAST one box of tissues in his lap, with a couple single ones never not clamped tightly to his nose as he constantly tries to fend off the coming onslaught. His whole body quits, and he definitely isnt much help when out of commission. Can get pretty messy, and definitely will have used tissues everywhere.

Do they stifle?:

About 50% of the time, as too many full sneezes can cause him massive nosebleeds, resulting in an extremely sore throat.

How loud are their sneezes?:

He tends to have pretty good fits, but they dont tend to get louder until the very last, desperate sneezes. Plus, he doesnt like to draw attention to himself sneezing if at all possible.

What do they sneeze into? (Hands, handkerchief, nothing?):

Honestly, Remi is HORRIBLE about remembering to cover his sneezes. Levi will constantly have to nudge a sick Remi to gently remind him to at least sneeze into his elbow. But prepare for the splash zone until Levi has to remind him again.

How often do they sneeze?:

When sick, hes a continuously sneezy mess that cant concentrate on anything other than his nose itching and bothering him. When healthy, you can still expect at LEAST 3 in a day.

How many times do they sneeze in a fit?:

Usually 3-4 is a normal fit, but he has personally counted and got to 142 sneezes in one day from one of his usual nasty colds.

Do they have buildups, or are they sudden?:

Allergies come suddenly and completely unexpected, which tends to be a problem for the wolf since he had no time to prepare. However, when dealing with a cold, he is constantly twisted up in a presneeze face, with a balled up soggy tissue trying its best to keep up with both the ITCHY tickle, and the lake pouring from his nose.

Do they sneeze in public?:

He'll try his best to avoid it, as having someone notice that his hard, tough exterior has a weak spot, is definitely not what he wants. But yknow, its Remi and his nose, so its not out of the question.

Sweet baby boy... sweet baby man who's a little dumb...

Denali (our 3-year-old male cat) peed on the beanbag yesterday. He hasn't been downstairs much yet because we've all been in the upstairs rooms this winter, and we thought he got confused by the like padding feeling of it as litter, so we're getting rid of that beanbag and put an extra litter box downstairs.

Then today, he peed on my beloved roommate's bed... this time we searched online about if he's potentially territory spraying or urine marking, because we know he's anxious around the other cat (though Oz is a 17-year-old half-toothless lady half his size, who wheezes after she hisses if she's annoyed at him being in her way). However, since it was just in one singular spot and we know he has health issues he's working through still, and both times it was his first time seeing that bed or beanbag, we think he's just a little dumb 💜🐈💜

We're now thoroughly keeping the litter boxes clean, making sure he's not in bedrooms other than our own, and gave him a little plain popcorn (his favorite snack) on various couches and beds to teach him these are pieces of furniture, not pee places.

okay so well as most people know we have three cats (author's note: we used to have four, the duck is alive and well and living in retirement in texas with her favorite people and they spoil the absolute hell out of her, she is having the best time, no worries about big miss). they're all male, they're all fixed. nobody has ever sprayed. theyre all bonded.

left to right: leo, zelos, larsa.

leo is 13yrs old and we have suspected him of harboring latent homocatual intentions his entire life. he was in a bonded pair with our old cat who he grew up with, and he was always far more demonstrative with loki than he was with our female cats. he was with loki everywhere. on top of loki, cuddling loki, mirroring loki, following loki around, playing with him, poking him, trying to eat his food, just adored him. when loki died, leo took years to recover from his grief.

zelos is 3 and a half and when he came home, leo was like. oh. a baby. interesting. and they're bonded, but leo isn't... obsessed with zelos. even though, and this is important context, we got zelos for leo. the duck would never play with him or cuddle with him or let him bathe her so we were like okay well, now we'll have a kitten for him, to be his baby. and leo was not having it. he definitely loves zelos and they've gotten even closer since we moved: they cuddle, they groom, they play and chase, but. a normal amount.

larsa is almost 3 and he is in an inappropriate age gap cat relationship with leo.

when he came home, zelos was very anxious about this very small baby and had to try to figure out dominance roles, so he started trying to mount this (tiny) kitten. please know. leo had never, in his life, mounted anything. ever. until zelos started mounting larsa. he learned this shit from zelos.

larsa doesn't like zelos mounting him. he slip slides his stupid muppet feet all over the place. he stomps on larsa. he doesn't have teeth. he stands there for minutes at a time and will sort of huddle behind him and follow him around when he does it. it's clearly some kind of self-soothing behavior for zelos, because once he was used to larsa he stopped doing it UNLESS larsa is in his cone. then zelos has to stomp on him. i guess to make sure he's okay, or something? i dont even begin to understand what goes on in the pumpkin.

but larsa and leo... i dont know how else to put this. they have gay cat sex. every day. multiple times a day. VERY loudly.

literally from the moment we brought larsa home, leo has loved him. he played with larsa with his tail when he was a kitten. taught him crimes like how to get on top of the fridge. cuddles with him. they sleep tangled together all night basically every night, and most of the day too. they groom each other until they are just sopping wet and this despite larsa having scientifically ungroomable persian fur, leo just goes for it, and somehow manages to get into even the deepest of his fluff with his awful weasel teeth.

and they have... weird gay cat sex.

whichever one of them initiates it, larsa or leo will walk around crying at a very specific timbre, looking for each other. if the other is awake, the gay cat initiating will go wake him up, squeaking or squawking and getting up to get his attention and then circle the apartment crying impatiently until the other one gets up.

once they're up, leo will just... climb right on up and mount larsa like nobody's business. he'll also do it even if larsa isnt looking for gay sex. actually they're doing it right now. like that two cats talking video, leo was just dead asleep and larsa started squeaking and now leo is going "brrp brrp" and staring at him. i see it's gay sex time.

leo will then climb up onto larsa's back and quite firmly mount him, pin him down, teeth in his ruff, smooshing him while larsa lays there and happily takes it. and theyll do this like. oh. yeah. there they go. anyway they'll do this like somtimes upwards of a dozen times, leo just mounting him and knocking him flat, then bathing him. if one of them stops too fast the other will chase him down to get more smooshing action. there is DISTINCT hip thrusting action.

they'll do this at all hours of the day but very specifically about 130 every morning is "gay cat sex hours" so we'll be laying there trying to go to sleep while our gay cats have REALLY LOUD gay cat sex in the other room. they'll do it while staring at us, during dinner, while zelos is napping and trying to ignore them doing it right next to him, they did it in front of our friend who is a zookeeper who was absolutely baffled bc they went at it for about ten minutes.

larsa often takes the dominant bathing role with leo, but has never tried to mount him. even if he's busy when he's getting smooshed he won't try to go away, he just lets leo smoosh him. he never complains about it like he does with zelos.

so. yeah. we have problematic age gap gay cats. and for some reason one of them is a bottom sub who wants to be smooshed by an older man. i don't fucking know. i've even tried talking to our vets about it and the consensus is that yeah, they're... just gay. we have gay cats.

→ History Miles and his family immigrated from Haiti to the United States during his early childhood. Miles was 3 years old. They spent some time in Florida as crop laborers/farm workers but eventually worked their way up to Georgia then to New Orleans. His father worked as a seasonal framhand and his mother worked as a maid. His family soon met up with the local pack and they settled in. Eventually people began noticing his parents didn’t age. Some accused them of being witches, or of hiring one to keep them young. The townspeople became so riled up that Buford Colt caught wind, all the way up in Jackson, Mississippi. He came down with his sons and they went hunting for witches. Instead, however, they found the cats. Roseline and Emmanuel sent their sons away to get the alpha when they heard the news of a hunter in town. When their sons returned, they had already been killed. Their alpha and the local seethe quickly killed Buford and most of his sons, except for one.

Miles and two brothers quickly became reckless without their parents warnings. They were angry and in mourning and they took to running off their pain. The triplets would go on long runs, sometimes gone for days at a time in their shift. Their alpha told them to slow down, but they had already become too aggressive to really control. It was at this point any warnings were given up, and they were told to just not kill anyone in New Orleans. A few months later Miles, Arthur, and Henry woke up in Texas, next to a man who’d been mauled to death. They buried him, and realized it had gone too far. Their alpha hadn’t mentioned anything when they’d come back, but a part of Miles wondered if he knew. The brothers immediately stopped shifting, but it wasn’t a smooth process. Miles broke down once or twice, but managed to stop shifting for a year, Arthur figured it out a few months after Miles, but Henry succumbed to the Hypershift, and was killed the following year. That almost triggered both Miles and Arthur to begin shifting again, and they had to move away from the town. It was then that Miles began journaling, to keep his temper and cat under control. It was the only way that he could process those emotions. The two remaining King brothers moved to Atlanta the following year, and then split apart. Miles spent decades travelling around in his human form, until finally he made his way to Chicago. There he finally met a pack likable enough to stay.

→ The Present Miles always thought his years spent in hypershift killed off any chance of romance or a family for him. He’d stayed out of the way of most cat shifters to avoid anything that would trigger him losing control again.  He expected he’d act the same again in Chicago, but found something that clicked. Especially when he saw Malia cornered that night. It’d been one of the few times Miles had run with the pack and he wondered how that particular bit of luck worked out. He is truly in awe of Malia, and he’s even more in awe that he gets to be her husband. Her tenacity and strength and intelligence has brought a new vibrance to Miles that he wasn’t sure he’d get again without the use of a shift. Miles and Malia are both trying to figure out how to balance everything. Malia put things on pause for them and their wedding and Miles wants to show her that he appreciated what she did and knew the sacrifice she made for them.

Miles has yet to tell anyone about his past, except for Kayla. Not even Malia. He knows what animal shifters and specifically the Chicago pack think of those who have gone into hypershift and he worries about how it would affect his relationship with all of them. Arthur warned him against it the last time he visited, reminded him why they didn’t do packs. Especially not judgemental ones. He’s been dragging this secret around for almost a century, and when he finally could at least somewhat talk about it with Kayla, he felt a little freer. He’s debating telling Malia now, hoping it doesn’t ruin everything they’ve worked so hard to maintain and grow.

Drusilla's Soul Ch. 13

Palm Springs Route 66 at 6:20 AM

The next morning, investigators swarmed the scene of the incident on Route 66. The paramedics carried the two corpses in the body bags and took them to the ambulance while the police officers identified their ID cards.

Kristy Mae Calkin, age 23, and Anthony Bryan Harrison, age 23 were killed by some vicious animals. No one knew what had happened, but due to the large presence of investigators and personal on scene it was something very big. The news reporters and the camera crews talked about the incident. These young couples were murdered by something or someone and had fatally bite marks on their necks like they were some kind of vicious animals.

There was African-American male who was 40 something years old, he was a veteran detective from the 17th precinct of L.A.P.D. He entered the crime scene tape and asked the investigator.

“What do we have here?” asked Daniel Bollis, it was his name.

“Well, we have bodies here on the road. The young couple appeared to have been attacked by a vicious animal due to the puntures of the neck marks on the victim’s necks.” said John.

“Pfft, don’t tell me there are wolves or mountain lions appear on the goddamn road. Are there any fingerprints here?” asked Daniel.

“I have found these fingerprints. We’ll need to analyze at the laboratory.” said John. Daniel nodded.

The reporters and camera crews rushed in, “Did you say wolves and lions could have been the cause of these bodies?” A reporter asked another question; “Do you know where these animals could be now?”

“I’m not obligated to answer these questions. There are no species in this road nor do I believe supernatural creatures. We have this murder case here. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to work things to do.” said Daniel, pushing them out of the way.

Daniel spoke to the investigators and police officers cleared off the road.

San Francisco, CA 7:30 AM

Drusilla’s house-

Drusilla warmed up pig blood in the mug from the microwave. She turned on the TV to watch the news. She heard the microwave beep when the mug was done. She took out the mug from the microwave and she went to the living room to watch the news.

Two hours later, Drusilla began working on her computer doing some project research. She was always working at home. She was a vampire with psychic abilities, she had a soul and now she became a Psychic Detective. She hunted spirits, ghosts, and demons from their homes.

A notification came across, “In breaking news, creatures have been spotted all over Japan running rampant. The creatures are either coming out blurred or not showing on camera.”

Drusilla looked curious at this article. ‘Hmm, I wonder what happened in Japan? I think I’ll have to take a trip next week.’

The sound of chime ringtone from her Smartphone. She picked up and masked her caller ID, it was Leon, Drusilla’s boyfriend. She answered.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Drusilla, how are you doing?” Leon greeted his girlfriend on the phone.

“Hi, Leon. I’m doing fine. I’m just working on my project. So, how are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m going great, Dru. Just working on my music, as well.” said Leon.

“That’s great!” Dru beamed a smile.

“Hey, uh, I was wondering… If you want to come to the nightclub. Is it alright I can pick you up at 8:00?” Leon asked.

“Oh, yeah. I want to have fun again. I’m sure Britney and David will be here, too.” said Drusilla.

“Really? Are they your friends?” he asked.

“Yeah, I met them at the bar that night. I’m sure you’ll meet them.” said Drusilla.

“Okay. I’ll see you at the Temple Nightclub at 8:00.” said Leon.

“Okay, I love you. Bye.” said Drusilla.

“Love you, too, Dru.” said Leon.

They hung up.

Drusilla sighed, she went to a website called Princess Cruises and she ordered a ticket to visit Japan and she would go on a mission next week. She wouldn’t be delayed. She glanced at the clock which was 9:45 AM. She headed back to her home office.

4:45 PM at JCPenney

Drusilla was shopping at the JCPenney that she bought a beautiful black sheath dress and a black T-strap pump, and a pair of silver bangles. She went to the checkout and bought these clothes.

5:01 PM at Drusilla’s house

Drusilla got home and hung her coat in the clothes rack. She set her shopping bag in her bedroom. Drusilla called her cat Jade and gave her a cat food for dinner. She petted her. She went to the living room to watch her favorite movie.

6:36 PM

After she finished watching the movie, she headed to take a shower. She washed her hair and body with the smell of violet and jasmine. She brushed her teeth and put on makeup. She put on the black dress and pump. She sprayed herself with White Diamond by Elizabeth Taylor. Drusilla looked fantastic.

7:15 PM

When the sky fell to dusk, Leon’s car pulled up Dru’s house and honked as he had arrived. Dru got out, set up a security alarm, and locked the door. She entered Leon as they greeted each other and went to their destination at the nightclub.

7:55 PM

They arrived at the Temple Nightclub and were ready to have fun. They entered the nightclub and there were LED light and strobe lights everywhere and they could hear the music sound of trance. And those people were dancing. Drusilla smiled at it.

A short blond girl spotted Drusilla and her boyfriend at the entrance. She waved at them.

“Drusilla! Is that you?” the blond shouted.

“Britney?” surprised Drusilla, she hasn’t seen her in 3 months.

“Yeah! How have you been? Haven’t seen you in 3 months.” she said.

“I’m doing great. It’s been a while since I met you at the nightclub. So, how are you and David?” she asked.

“Oh, we’re fine. The doctor fixed David’s arm and he was fully healed in the last 3 months. And I wanted to thank you for saving our lives back.” said Britney.

“Oh, it’s no big deal.” said Drusilla.

“Hey, who’s this guy?” asked David.

“Oh, Britney, David, I’d like to meet my lover. This is Leon,” Drusilla said. “Leon and I even matched on Tinder.”

“No way!” exclaimed Britney.

“Yes way.” said Drusilla.

“Hi, Britney. Nice to meet you.” said Leon, shaking her hand.

“Hi, I’m David.” said David, shaking his hand.

“So, uh, how about we get a drink, yeah?” asked Leon.

“Yeah, let’s order some.” agreed David.

They drank their booze and the couple asked Leon what was his hobby and occupation. He told them he was a music producer and he was always making music. Britney and David were astonished.

When the next song played Be My Lover by La Bouche. It was Drusilla’s favorite song. She told Leon to come dance with her, Leon agreed. David and Britney joined them.

he’s in the second grade when he’s first told that his family is poor , and it isn’t until fifth grade that archie begins to understand it himself . with hair long and curly , untamed like ocean waves , and clothing tainted with the stench of second - hand smoke and mildew , his teachers begin to take notice . in sixth grade , his name is called over the intercom and his classmates holler and cackle and point their fingers at him like he’s some sort of animal in a cage , but he manages to get out of the classroom before bursting into tears on his way to the counselor’s office . she sits him down the way your parents sit you down before they tell you awful news , but she tells him she’s only here to help , and if he could just tell her why he wears the clothes he wears and if his house has plumbing and if his parents ever hit him . he speaks , tells her he doesn’t know , yes , and no , but he must have told her something she wanted to hear , because her eyes widen and she tells him to continue . my father , he tells her , chain - smokes cigarettes in the car , in the house , sometimes blows the smoke in my face to make my mother laugh . by eighth grade , his father’s out of the picture , but his clothing still reeks of cigarette smoke and mildew , and though his hair is shorter , it’s greasy and freckled with white flakes . his mother hardly speaks to him, and that would bother him, but , he realizes , she doesn’t speak much at all after his father left .

by high school , he’s learned to shower at friends’ houses and learned to wash his own clothing at laundromats , and though the mildew stench is gone , his clothes now take on a different aroma . cigarettes , cheap beer , weed , and axe body spray . he’s not entirely fond of the smell of body spray , but it’s all he can afford , even after a summer mowing lawns around town . in junior year , he begins to take his schooling more seriously , finds himself immersed in textbooks and novels and documentaries in the late hours of the night . but , by the time second semester rolls around , he’s immersed in something else , someone else , a person who changes his viewpoint on the ideologies of love . her name is bonnie , a bright soul , rich in spirit and in wealth , a person who opens his eyes to the world of luxuries . he’s nineteen when they officially begin dating , a cat and mouse game played throughout the years they spent as friends , and though she’s a few years older , she doesn’t treat him like he’s naive . she’s open to him about everything , about her illness , about her wealth , about her motives . she leaves everything to him after her death , an ending they both saw coming all too well after her years battling cancer . money , a house , a car , a job with her father’s company – if archie’d only take it . he gives the money to a local hospital , sells the house and gives that money to his mother , but he keeps the car because the inside smells like her , smells like warmth and embers and leather and entirely bonnie .

he spends his time now working at the local bookshop now , and if he’s not clocked in , he’s sitting against its shelves rereading bukowski or baldwin , a cup of coffee nestled comfortably between his thighs . he’d gone to college for a semester , but dropped out once he realized he didn’t need a degree in order to get educated , and why should he waste money he doesn’t have to get a degree he probably won’t want ? he thinks often of his father and of bonnie and of his mother , who moved to florida with the house money . of other loves, as well -- more recent ones. a girl who somehow managed to climb into his head without knocking and fix herself in like a map pin. he wonders why people always leave , but perhaps he won’t ever discover the answer to that question , and , sometimes on his darkest days , he thinks the answer might be himself .

often gets told by elders that he’s an ‘ old soul ’ , but just thinks that’s a polite way of telling him he’s a bit darker , a bit out of place , especially in comparison to his peers . definitely has a darker sense of humor and oftentimes uses sarcasm and is known to be quite vulgar at times , especially if he’s under the influence . can be relatively meticulous , especially when it comes to reading – takes his time to underline words or phrases , likes writing in the margins . can be somewhat critical of others , and can be quite cynical at times , especially in terms of friendships and relationships . often has to question if feelings are genuine , both his own and other people’s , and definitely has abandonment issues . is both patient and impatient in the sense that he can be patient to see his mother after years of not seeing her , but is impatient that his water is taking too long to boil . is evasive , especially – but not only – when it comes to relationships or questions about himself , but is alluring enough for people to want to know more about him , he supposes . archie’s just … an overall darker personality , really .

So I have a 3 year old male cat we've had him since he was 6 months old, he is not neutered yet I was going to take him this spring but then covid happened and I know I shouldn't have put it off for so long but alas I did unfortunately. Anyway he just walked up to me and sprayed me. Im seriously so shocked right now. He's a super well behaved cat and I've had absolutely no issues with him at all i guess im just wondering your professional opinion on what could be the cause/what are the next steps i should be taking. Tysm!! (2/2)

I expect he is marking you as his own. Feel flattered, I suppose? Does he spray in other places too? Has the spraying behavior changed recently other than spraying you? Are there any new cats or other additions or changes to the family, or are there new stray cats on your propety that he could have seen through the window?

The best step to have taken would have been to have him neutered as soon as you got him, because once a cat sprays there is no guarantee that neutering will help. It often does, but again, no guarantee. You can also work to reduce stress in the household related to newcomers or add curtains or “frosted glass” stickies to your windows to prevent him being stressed by outdoor cats.

Please do not buy rabbits as Easter gifts!! 

Rabbits make wonderful pets! They are affectionate, funny, clever, and social. Rabbits rarely if ever make any noise. They're exceptionally clean, frequently bathing themselves like cats do. And also like cats, they are very easily litter trained! This makes them ideal indoor pets.

But there are a lot of myths around keeping rabbits as pets - I'll bust some of the common ones...

Rabbits are a low maintenance pet - Rabbits are not a cheap or easy pet to keep! They need lots of fresh hay, fresh leafy greens, toys, litter, vet care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, nail trims, grooming, and lots of attention.

Rabbits can be kept in a little hutch outside - Rabbits have a lot of energy and love to run and bounce!  They need a hutch/pen that is large enough for them to stand on their back feet without their ears touching the roof, that’s wide enough for them to lie down stretched out, and so they can hop at least 3 times their own length.  They need at least a few hours a day time outside of their pen so they can explore and play.  Ideally, bunnies should be allowed to free roam their human's house all the time (but this isn't always practical).

Rabbits are ideal pets for children - Most rabbits don’t like being picked up or handled so are generally not a good pet for young children. 

Rabbits are fun and easy to breed - Easy to breed? Yes.  Responsible and fun? Not so much!  Unless you want to deal with a new litter of babies almost every month (rabbits can get pregnant as soon as they give birth) you cannot keep an intact male and female bun together so will need separate housing for them. Intact female rabbits have an 80% chance of getting uterine cancer.  Intact rabbits can be territorial, spray, be more aggressive, and be harder to toilet train. 

Rabbits don’t live long, they aren’t a big commitment - Healthy indoor rabbits actually live around 8-10 years.  The oldest living rabbit is currently 16 years old!  Potentially a very big commitment.  Unlike some pets, rabbits cannot be left alone for even a day.  They need to be fed fresh food twice a day, and can become terminally ill very quickly so need to be checked on often. 

I can’t afford a dog or cat so a rabbit is a good alternative - While they might not cost as much to look after as, say, a Great Dane, rabbits are by no means a cheap pet.  You’ll need to buy a variety of fresh veggies, herbs,and fruits (as a treat!) at least once a week,  and high quality pellets, hay, and litter as needed.  They need to be vet checked as often as a dog or cat, but likely need to go to an exotic vet as many regular vets aren’t familiar with rabbit healthcare.  You will also need to spend quite a bit of money up front setting up for your bun - on both their housing needs and ‘bunny-proofing’ your home (both to protect your belongings and to keep your bun safe)

Now, this post isn't meant to deter you from the idea of a rabbit pet! Just know they are not a good impulse buy pet for Easter (or any time!) Do your research, be committed, and you'll have a wonderful friend for many years!
