Alright, my new additions passed their vet checks so now it’s time to introduce them!
They are still in quarantine but I am confident they’ll make it through successfully. They came from a roadside zoo that is shutting down and selling their inhabitants, so I felt morally okay picking up two animals.
JUNO is a male madagascar giant day gecko. He will eventually move into a 2x2x3, and I am on the lookout for a 2x2x4 or bigger.
DUCKWEED (Ducky) is a male oriental fire belly toad. He will eventually move into something a little bigger than his quarantine 20 long but I haven’t fully decided on the size yet. Probably a 40 breeder or similar.
They are both eating well and settling in well!

20240223: the History of LEGO Castle day 054. 1624-1 King's Archer (1993, 22 pieces, 11 different parts) The King's Archer is a very small set with two black columns built on two 2x10 green baseplates with a yellow circular target on a black 1x4 arch with a green bush on the side. The one minifigure for this set has a red torso with black arms and a silver scale mail print, light gray legs with a black belt, a brown quiver and notched bow, a yellow minifigure head with brown bangs, mustache, and beard, and a dark gray archer helmet. This set introduced the 2x2x4 green bush and is one of only three sets and a service pack with the yellow 2x2 printed target circle tile. This set was also included with the 1597-1 Castle 3-Pack value set from 1993. The two other sets consist of 1547-1 Black Knight's Boat and 1596-1 Ghostly Hideout. Parts inventory for this set can be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions can be found on ToysPeriod.

so i contacted a rescue so i could adopt a hamster instead of giving money to petco and their fucking horrific treatment of everything to do with hamsters including breeding them and they asked for non-family references and i was like i'm disabled, i don't have coworkers or a social life, but here's the unit assload of knowledge i have of hamster care and they got back to me like 'well we do really need references, can't you think of someone?' like bitch what was hard to understand about i can't work and i don't go outside because i'm in pain. like i literally linked you to the spray package and food mix i use, told you the 6 different substrates in that enclosure, that the enclosure is 2x2x4' with more than a foot of bedding, and a whole lot more. and the kicker? the kicker is in the pics of the hamsters at their foster home i can see that they're just in aquarium enclosures with not enough substrate and i can damn-near guarantee not enough enrichment bc i can't see any sprays or wood peeking into frame or any leaf litter/forage mix on top of the bedding. AND they wanna know what vet i took a dog i owned 16 years ago to. it's in new york and i don't even fucking know if it's open anymore. GOD. i fully respect and am grateful for rescues and pounds doing due diligence before just handing over an animal to someone, but ableism and wanting to contact every vet i've been to in the last 20 years ain't it.

If not a beardie then what would you suggest as a good first time reptile?
There are dozens, if not hundreds of amazing species that are much better pets than bearded dragons. I honestly don’t really think most people in general should own a beardie, but they are constantly pushed as one of the best beginner reptiles and it is just wildly inaccurate. They need massive enclosures. People claim a 40g or a 4x2x2ft is perfect but if you think about how large these animals are and how active they can be when truly given the space and enrichment, it’s absurd.
If we were to give an 18 inch beardie an enclosure equivalent to an 8 inch leopard gecko in a 20 gallon long, we would need a 5.5ft by 2.25ft enclosure. A 40g for a leopard gecko would be equivalent to giving a beardie a 6.75ft by 3.37ft enclosure. Not to mention they grow very fast, they can be fussy about their diets, and they need quite high temperatures! They are also very prone to metabolic bone disease if their UV needs are not met and many new keepers struggle with providing appropriate temperatures and UV.
The best beginner reptile is going to depend on what specifically you are looking for in a pet, but in general I recommend first time keepers to get a reptile with most of these qualities:
-On the smaller end, requiring no bigger than a 4x2x2 or a 2x2x4…. But not a micro species either. In my experience these enclosure sizes are generally the largest that most first time owners are comfortable with fitting into their home, are fairly affordable with some saving up, and are easy to take with you if you move.
-Good eaters, not prone to hunger strikes
-Hardy, able to tolerate a wider range of temperatures and humidities as new keepers often struggle at first with maintaining temps and humidity
-Easy to acquire diet (frozen rats are easy, but a species that only eats amphibians is harder to source for)
-Commonly captive bred
-Relatively handleable
-A species you are genuinely excited to own

20240128: the History of LEGO Castle day 028. 6066-1 Camouflaged Outpost (1987, 228 pieces, 75 different parts) The Camouflaged Outpost is a light gray and black enclosed set built on two thin green baseplates with green foilage. This set is RIDICULOUSLY COOL. The whole thing is on a hinge and can be completely closed to look like a large rock in the forest or it can be opened to allow for play within the set itself. This set introduced the green leaf pieces, both the smaller 4x3 and the large 6x5 leaves, as well as the first brown horse within the castle theme. One side has a black brick built hinge mechanism, which functions as a secret entrance into the closed fortress. Additional access into the inside of the outpost can be found but lifting up the light gray hinged plates. The six minifigures in this set are all completely new, with four different torsos all on plain green legs. There's one each of the green torso with a yellow v-neck and green arms, a printed black belt with a yellow buckle, and a brown pouch and the green torso with black arms, a black belt with a yellow buckle, and a black printed ridged collar. Then there's two each of the green torso with red arms and a red collar (also with a black belt with a yellow buckle) and the green torso with blue arms and a blue collar (also with a black belt with a yellow buckle). This is also the set with the most bow and arrows out of any of the LEGO Castle subthemes. There are so many back of the box and alternate builds for this set, though none with actual instructions. Back of the box, box flap, and back of the instruction booklet alternate builds for this set include a tower bridge, a windmill, a different styled outpost, an archery range, and a more tree-like building. This is the very first set in the Forestmen series, with a debut in 1987. I played with this set so very much as a young human that this set is maybe a little more worn than some of my other sets. The Forestmen are probably my absolute favorite of all the LEGO Castle subthemes, as the whole series was very Robin Hood-ish. Plus, I grew up in the Olympic National Forest in Washington State (U.S.A.) and spent most of my own childhood (when I wasn't playing with my LEGO :) ), outside, exploring, climbing trees, and generally just enjoying the woods. Obviously, my favorite of these minifigures is the one with the blue collar and arms :) I mean. this set even came with two small 2x2x4 trees! Everything about this set is all about the forest and it's really such a great set. I also thoroughly enjoy how easily portable this set is, as it's very stable and you can just put all the minifigures and the horse inside, close it up, and move or carry it anywhere. This makes displaying it and playing with it very easy. Though, one thing that's definitely been on my mind for the last two builds is how these sets came out during a time when brick separators were extremely rare and rather expensive. I think they were like $5 each. For $5 at that time, I could have bought at least a 50 piece small LEGO Castle set! However, the struggle to disassemble these sets without a brick seperator is/was very, very real. Parts inventory for this set can be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions for this set can be found at ToysPeriod. This set was designed by Niels Milan Pedersen and a list of everything he designed can be found on BrickSet.

Fajita became a bit feral after getting into his big 2x2x4 cage since he’s basically a giant that lords over me. His cage sits on another 4 foot tall cage, so he’s 8 feet up judging me. I’ve been working on trust building and bribing him with food to get closer and closer, and LOOK AT THIS. He’s on my hand! Is he just not?? The coolest??? Lizard??? Ohhh my god. He’s amazing.
