3 Poems by Walt Whitman: No. 2, A Clear Midnight
A Clear Midnight
This is thy hour O Soul, thy free flight into the wordless, Away from books, away from art, the day erased, the lesson done, Thee fully forth emerging, silent, gazing, pondering the themes thou lovest best, Night, sleep, death and the stars.
--Walt Whitman, 1881

Homeland: The Abyssal Sea (the super very bottom of it, where light never reaches).
Family: Unnamed mothers, six unnamed sisters.
Species: Sireno (male counterpart of a Siren/Sirena).
Unique Magic: Heed My Call. Has the power to hypnotize anyone by singing, allowing him to make them do his bidding. He can also suck out people’s voices as well as their magic to feed his own.
Preferences:
Club: Science.
Best Subject: Music.
Hobbies: Singing, poison making, sitting soaking wet in a bathtub in his merform.
Pet Peeves: Being touched without permission, when his hair gets tangled, heat and dryness, being questioned.
Favorite food: human flesh Cephalopoda (octopus and squid)
Least Favorite Food: Shark meat.
Likes: Octavinelle, the ocean, singing, music, cooking, reading, water, swimming, his hair.
Dislikes: Fishermen, human traffickers/hunters, gossip, nets, narrow spaces, crowds, alcohol, anything that restricts his movement.
Appearance (Human Form):
Tumblr media
Aurinelle has curly knee-length hair the color of freshly fallen snow, with purplish blue that starts at his roots and quickly fades into white. He cares for his hair like his life depends on it. His skin is entirely pale except for the patches of aero blue that surround the scales around his body. His scales are capable of changing color based on his mood, however he’s come to have control over that ability in order to avoid being easily read.
Aurinelle has a lithe body with impressive flexibility and is incredibly tall, towering over most students at a whopping 6’2 feet. His nails are naturally black and he paints over them with different types of glitters and decorations. His low, defined cheekbones make his facials look charmingly youthful. He has droopy hooded eyes colored a golden yellow that fades into a light blue. His eye lashes are long and well taken care of. On the other hand, the underside of his eyes are marked by heavy blueish eye bags (which he’s often nagged about by Vil).
Appearance (Merform):
Tumblr media
In his merform, Aurinelle is extremely thin, yet incredibly strong. He is about 7 feet in length, and his entire body is painted in different shades of blues, purples and pinks. His massive tail has many different gems that act as his scales that also change color. His scales shine brightly in the dark, both on land and in the sea. His tail fins are an unadulterated white, which contrast with the rest of his body hue.
When in his merform, the color of his sclera changes from white to pitch black and his irises become solely yellow. The scales on his tail form a pattern of waves that entangle with each other in a sort of Yin Yang formation.
Personality:
Aurinelle is relatively quiet, and always has a resting bitch face on. He’s usually avoided for both his large size and for several lurking rumors about his identity and species, since no one actually knows what he is. He dislikes being questioned about his identity, because to land dwellers and coral sea inhabitants alike, sirens had gone extinct centuries ago. Imagine the ruckus if he were to be found out!
However, unlike many assumptions, Aurinelle is a wonderful listener and an impressive leader. That does not mean he can’t give firm and harsh criticism when required (some people in NRC need a harsh slap from reality). He’s protective of those whom he’s fond of, and is extremely soft to children, singing lovely lullaby songs if his appearance happens to intimidate them. He’s hardly ever deceived (Azul, Jade and Jamil learned that the hard way), and has sharp senses that alert him if someone is nothing but trouble. He hates being watched (cough Rook cough), but he knows the difference when he’s watched out of admiration vs out of spite or the like.
Overall, he’s a misunderstood giant.
HE’S FINALLY FINISHED AFTER SO MANY HOURS OF DRAWING
gosh I LOVE HIM
spoiler alert: I’m never drawing his merform again 😜

October 29th 1740 James Boswell, the biographer, diarist and travel writer was born in Edinburgh.
James Boswell, ninth laird of Auchinleck, is best remembered for his biography 'The Life of Samuel Johnson' published in 1791. It was only in the latter part of the twentieth century with the recovery of his private papers and publication of his London journal of 1762-1763 that his qualities as a diarist came to light. The honest, frank and sometimes shocking insights into his personal, professional and social life provide an almost tangible description of his time. James Boswell was proud of his social rank and his ancestors. Thomas, first laird of Auchinleck, had been gifted the castle and barony in 1504 by James IV; and he claimed descent from a cousin of Lord Darnley (second husband of Mary Queen of Scots and father of James VI and I) on his mother's side.
Now I have since discovered that Boswell was actually born on October 18th The entry in the Old Parish Register for Edinburgh gives the names of three witnesses to the baptism which took place the same day, as seen in the first of the pics.
Reading more about Boswell, I have garnered a bit of a dislike for the man, having qualified as a lawyer, he travelled to London hoping to rub shoulders with ‘men of genius’, I mean we were in the throes of The Scottish Enlightenment, Edinburgh was a hotbed of intellectuals, another reason he left for London was to try and meet his literary hero, Samuel Johnson. He realised this ambition the following year when he met Johnson in a Covent Garden bookshop. The two men became close friends despite having differing views on topics such as the slave trade. Boswell called Johnson’s views against the slave trade ‘zeal without knowledge’ and published an anti-abolitionist poem No Abolition of Slavery; Or the Universal Empire of Love in 1791. Nevertheless, Boswell is chiefly remembered for another work published in 1791, his acclaimed Life of Samuel Johnson, in which the innovative use of colloquial language, conversation and short sentences helped to bring Johnson’s character to life.
On the 16th May 1791, Boswell published the Life of Johnson, a book which is widely regarded as the first modern biography. Previous to this biographies, such as they were, were idealised portraits of people such as military commanders and king, Boswell is said to have re-invented the biography. One reason Boswell was able to capture such a complete and vivid portrait of Johnson was that the writing of the biography could be said to have started on the day they met. In the journals he put in patches of verbatim dialogue as recorded in his diary.
His writings described sex, depression, drink, rows with his father, the drudgery of law, the great spectacle of life in London and in Edinburgh, but as well as being the first modern biographer and a prolific diarist, Boswell was also the first celebrity interviewer. He went to see the great French philosopher Rousseau, who tried to turn him away saying he was unwell and he could only spare a short time.
Boswell wrote 'I hate that phrase, short time' and he ended up chatting to him for six days.
Dumfries House is host to the Boswell Book Festival every May, inspired by the Ayrshire biographer James Boswell of Auchinleck, at the heart of the Festival is a programme of stories taken from the inspirational lives of people past and present - told through talks, drama, art and music.

OTD in Music History: Legendary Italian opera composer Gioachino Rossini (1792 – 1868) would be celebrating his 58th birthday today if he were still alive to blow out the candles on a cake. Wait, what? Well, every great musical figure has a birthdate – but very few were born on February *29th*. Rossini held the rare distinction of being a “leap year” baby, which means that although he lived on Earth for 76 full rotations around the Sun (an impressive run back in the 19th Century), he nevertheless died of age-related illnesses before he ever had a chance to celebrate his 20th birthday. This quirk of the modern calendar also means that technically speaking, Rossini managed to compose all of his operas and settle into a long and comfortable retirement before his 10th birthday even rolled around… and you thought W.A. Mozart (1756 – 1791) was the greatest prodigy in musical history! PICTURED: A c. 1960s real photo postcard showing the elderly Rossini as he would have appeared shortly after celebrating his 18th birthday (in his late 60s).

Events In The History And Of The Life Of Elvis Presley Today On The 29th Of July In 1976.
Elvis Presley The Civic Center, Springfield, Mass July 29, 1976
By Sam Hoffman Springfield Daily News July 29th, 1976
Elvis Presley is still the entertainer of the century. The singing monarch strode into Springfield Civic Center tonight and spent better than am hour on stage, entertaining his subjects and making just about everyone there happy with a bag of his oldies, goodies and Goldies, as well as his latest hit single I'm Hurt, which ought to net the King a few more riches... and deservingly so. It was a paunchy looking Elvis Presley this year and even a large belt failed to hide the fact that even the King probably can't say 'No' to a second helping at the dinner table. Musically, The Elvis Presley Show was a smasheroo. The one disappointment - a big one in our books - was his failure to include that beautiful ballad Love Me Tender on the program. Aside from that note, Elvis Presley did his thing and the audience showed its pleasure with screams and cries of 'Elvis Presley's hand-clapping, foot-stomping, and those who could whistle, did. There aren't many performers today who can hold audience attention from start to finish. Elvis Presley is one who does it every time and anywhere he appears. Last the audience was under their King's spell of song, charm, chatter and a toss of a scarf. The latter is a fixture in a Elvis Presley performance and some of the lucky persons who grabbed off scarves had to pay with a kiss. The Civic Center may have been in semi-darkness but the moment Elvis Presley stepped on stage, an endless barrage of camera flashes made night look like day.
Elvis may have slowed down his pelvis gyrations some but his program of song was right on target. From opener C.C. Rider the singing monarch moved quickly into Is It All Right? and Amen, a couple of hand-clappers. The bag of songs included Please Love Me, If You Love Me, Give Me a Mountain and Help Me. There were also some older Goldies such as I'm All Shook Up, Don't Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog and Only Fools Rush In. Unlike most Presley concerts this one was minus a religious flavor. There were several religious songs on the program but they were delivered by a gospel group which preceded the King.
Elvis Presley usually sings them himself. He did offer up a neat version of America the Beautiful, a big vocal and musical sound. There was no question the audience showed their affection to the man. They did it in so many ways - with flowers and a variety of gifts which somehow made their way on stage.
There were sings hoisted aloft telling Elvis Presley he was loved and some parents who brought their youngsters edged close to the stage and held their offspring up high to get a closer look at the singing monarch. We asked a few people in the audience if they felt it was worth plunking down the price of a ticket to see Elvis Presley and the chorus was unanimously 'Yes'. Our sentiments exactly.

Up-Helly-Aa 2025!
Shetland A busy night of revelry in halls around Lerwick The Up Helly Aa guizer were in fine form during the procession.
The Up Helly Aa fire festivals date back to the 1880s and celebrate the Viking culture and heritage of the Shetland Islands, and are among the largest annual celebrations in Shetland, taking place every year between January and March. Today marks Lerwick’s Up Helly Aa, the largest of these festivals, which signifies the end of winter and draws inspiration from Shetland’s Viking heritage. Communities across the islands come together for a night of festivities, where traditional Shetland music is played, torches are lit, with a Viking longship.
Tumblr media
Shetland was once a Viking stronghold and the imprint they left still exists today. This is the case in Unst, where there is the greatest concentration of evidence of the Viking's presence and their subsequent Norse occupation. An archaeological project there, Viking Unst, has excavated three Viking longhouses and another, at Sandwick - Village in Mainland, Shetland - was explored towards the end of the last century. There are more than 60 such sites on Unst - Shetland.
Tumblr media
Lerwick Up Helly Aa is the largest fire festival in Europe. The festival is led by the Guizer Jarl, or Chief Viking, along with his team of Vikings, known as guizers, who dress in elaborate costumes. The event features over one thousand torches carried by various squads during the processions. After parading through the streets of Lerwick with their flaming torches, the grand procession culminates in the ceremonial burning of a Viking longship, also referred to as a galley.

New Coining Event!
Hello and welcome to Synth’s Coining Rockin’ Event (or the “cre coining event” for the sane), a coining event entirely centered around rock music! Everything from J-Rock, to grunge, to hair metal! Any and everyone is welcome to participate! The event is going to last from May 1st to June 15!
There aren’t really any rules, just some stuff I’d like to say before we get to the prompts. Every day of the event has two prompts, in theory the first one is a more known song and the second less known and also similar/linked in some way, but I don’t know how good of a job I did at that. It’s totally cool to do both prompts or just one, going off actual relation, vibes, whatever works! I’d like to ask that no one does genders just related to the listed song or songs/albums, just so we can avoid recoinings, but everything else is up for grabs!
Everyone is free to do all days, just a couple, multiple prompts a day, whatever floats your boat!
If anyone is interested in some tags they could use to organize or find terms, I have some of those under the cut. With all that out of the way, here are the prompts!
May 1st: November Rain (Guns N’ Roses) // (Don’t Fear) The Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult) May 2nd: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) // Slither (Velvet Revolver) May 3rd: Dream On (Aerosmith) // Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door (any version) May 4th: Girls, Girls, Girls (Motley Crue) // Talk Dirty To Me (Poison) May 5th: Welcome to the Jungle (Guns N’ Roses) // Nightrain (Guns N’ Roses) May 6th: Every Rose Has Its Thorn (Poison) // Snuff (Slipknot) May 7th: I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing (Aerosmith) // I’d Die For You (Bon Jovi) May 8th: Livin’ On A Prayer (Bon Jovi) // Viva la Gloria! (Green Day) May 9th: You Give Love A Bad Name (Bon Jovi) // Shot Through The Heart (Bon Jovi) May 10th: Slippery When Wet (Bon Jovi) // 7800° Degrees Fahrenheit (Bon Jovi) May 11th: Dr. Feelgood (Motley Crue) // London Calling (The Clash) May 12th: American Idiot (Green Day) // 21st Century Breakdown (Green Day) May 13th: The Black Parade (My Chemical Romance) // Danger Days: The True Lives Of the Fabulous Killjoys (My Chemical Romance) May 14th: Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd) // Give Me Novacaine (Green Day) May 15th: Numb (Linkin Park) // Shadow On the Sun (Audioslave) May 16th: Are We the Waiting (Green Day) // The Thin Ice (Pink Floyd) May 17th: Everlong (Foo Fighters) // She’s a Rebel (Green Day) May 18th: I Don’t Love You You (My Chemical Romance) // Don’t Cry (Guns N’ Roses) May 19th: Basketcase (Green Day) // Everyday is News (Shinsei Kamattechan) May 20th: Holiday (Green Day) // God Save the Queen (Sex Pistols) May 21st: Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) // Homecoming (Green Day) May 22nd: Rock You Like a Hurricane (Scorpions) // Young Lust (Pink Floyd) May 23rd: Somebody Told Me (The Killers) // Michael (Franz Ferdinand) May 24th: The Sharpest Lives (My Chemical Romance) // Kickstart My Heart (Motley Crue) May 25th: In The End (Linkin Park) // Last Resort (Papa Roach) May 26th: Pour Some Sugar On Me (Def Leppard) // Cherry Pie (Warrant) May 27th: Here I Go Again (Whitesnake) // Street Of Dreams (Guns N’ Roses) May 28th: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (The Clash) // American Woman (Lenny Kravitz) May 29th: Shout At the Devil (Motley Crue) // The Hardest Part Is The Night (Bon Jovi) May 30th: Closer (Nine Inch Nails) // Wither (Tech N9ne, Corey Taylor) May 31st: I Love Rock N’ Roll (Joan Jett) // Mental Health(Bang Your Head) (Quiet Riot) June 1st: Master of Puppets (Metallica) // Under The Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) June 2nd: Enter Sandman (Metallica) // Nightmare (Avenged Sevenfold) June 3rd: Toxicity (System Of A Down) // Carnivore (Body Count) June 4th: Nevermind (Nirvana) // Whatever (Adore Delano) June 5th: Sweet Child O’ Mine (Guns N’ Roses) // Born To Be My Baby (Bon Jovi) June 6th: Psychosocial (Slipknot) // Welcome to Horrorwood (Ice Nine Kills) June 7th: A Little Piece of Heaven (Avenged Sevenfold) // Enthrone (CHTHONIC) June 8th: Walk This Way (Aerosmith or Aerosmith, Run D.M.C.) // Bring The Noise (Public Enemy, Anthrax) June 9th: Rocket Man (Elton John) // Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) June 10th: Say It Ain’t So (Weezer) // Inside Out (Eve 6) June 11th: Letterbomb (Green Day) // Better (Guns N’ Roses) June 12th: I Write Sins Not Tragedies (Panic! For anyone interested, here are the tags I’ll be using to organize genders related to certain bands. No one has to use them, but I thought someone would be interested and I’m bored! Also, all of these terms have already been coined, by me or someone else, that’s why not everything has a tag

Felicity Community release | Ruiyang Niu 'The Outlaw Ocean'
Tumblr media
Mr. Wang Zun, may I ask which box of Cool Jazz Vinyl records is more precious than Einstein's brain slice, or Ruiyang Niu's latest album "The Outlaw Ocean" would you choose?
I will resolutely choose Ruiyang Niu's latest album "The Outlaw Ocean". I already have a lot of Vinyl records, but Ruiyang Niu's latest album "The Outlaw Ocean" is limited to release worldwide, which may be the most satisfying collection of my life.
---Dialogue between Sleeping Artist and Wang Zun on July 29th
Chinese indie musician Ruiyang Niu New Concept Album
The Outlaw Ocean
CD Deluxe Edition was released by Felicity Community on July 22, 2023
Tumblr media
After the release of Ruiyang Niu's previous album "The Guilt of Hand Cream", Ruiyang Niu continued to delve into Lofi Beat and Jazzy Hip Hop, and released this surprising album in mid 2023.
This album uses music to construct a grand underwater world, and uses synthesizer elements to evoke people's infinite imagination about the ocean.
Tumblr media
In the mid-20th century, capitalism prevailed, and the living space of the middle and lower classes in society sharply narrowed, causing a large number of ordinary people to take risks. The "Underwater Rambler" has become a hot profession in the gold miner industry.
Just like high-risk and high-reward pirates, Underwater Ramblers receive generous rewards by transporting prohibited items on the seabed, avoiding strict regulations. Ruiyang Niu is one of the so-called underwater wanderers.
In 2049, Ruiyang Niu's son Niu Jack was born. In order to support the young children, Niu joined the team of Underwater Ramblers to transport the "ZetarTech Manufacturing Righteous Body".

"If it were you, you would do the same, there is no other choice…."

When you cross The Ocean Gate, You have officially become a Underwater Rambler. Anyway, WELCOME TO THE OUTLAW OCEAN!
Tumblr media
"The Offshore Base is an underwater village located in the northwest Pacific Ocean."
"The northwest of the village is The Ocean Gate, while the southeast connects to the 21st Century Underwater Silk Road."
In the late 2030s, a group of people who were tired of the rules and systems of the new militarist world agreed to establish villages on the seabed and sea surface in the central Atlantic and northwest Pacific, with Offshore Base being one of them.
The villagers have no fixed rest time and rely on primitive fishing and hunting to survive without external interference. This place is rich in resources and was once referred to as a "paradise" by Underwater Ramblers.

Do you want to know Ruiyang Niu's adventure on the 21st century underwater Silk Road?

What it means to turn 74.
Tumblr media
Faced with advancing years in a business that does not want to hear of it, my  former Bronner Slosberg colleague and emeritus Executive Creative Director friend Mike Slosberg had a clever way to celebrate birthdays:  instead of admitting to an age, say instead you are celebrating the “X” anniversary of your 29th birthday, a time that was thought of as neither a detriment nor a liability.
You might think the music business, especially rock-and-roll, favors the young, much like advertising, with performers in their 20s.  But if this were true, can anyone explain how Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and the many other age-defiers who still run crack tours, still write amazing songs, and still play to sold-out houses and stadiums?
Conceding there are a fair number of adults taking the rock-and roll stage, it’s got to be true that at least the people who support their tours, the so-called “roadies,” must be kids, given the endurance, stamina, and muscle needed to handle the physical demands of the job.
I assumed as much until I read The New York Times story, “These Roadies Help Stars Rock ’n’ Roll All right. They’re in Their 70s,” where the story’s author observes:
“Funny place, the music business — it devours the young and ignores the old. Or at least that’s how it may appear. Aside from a handful of entrenched executives and a circuit of legacy acts, employment opportunities in the industry for those of AARP age might seem slim. But there’s a fascinating exception: Many of the industry’s most respected and consistently employed roadies, instrument techs and live sound people are well into their 60s and even 70s.”
It turns out,
“Some of the live music industry’s most respected and consistently working roadies, instrument techs and sound people have been on the job for half a century.”
As one roadie put it:
“’I may be 74, but the funny thing is, there’s always someone older.  That’s because the more experience you have, the better shows you can get. When people have confidence and they trust you, that’s like one less thing that they have to cloud their brain. I know this guy will do the job, ’cause he’s done that same job for me 700 times before.’”
In my wildest dreams I never anticipated that rockers would be more enlightened about the knowledge, wisdom, and earned experience of veteran pros than the surprisingly backward and insular advertising business – a business ostensibly reputed to be open-minded and forward thinking -- but there you have it.  In the rock-and-roll business, performers understand experience counts.
When it comes to proclaiming the virtues of longevity, I count myself among the rockers, a recidivist who has written far too many times about the virtues of tenure, experience, and institutional memory, including, here, here, and here.  Lest you think (or maybe hope) otherwise, I intend to write about it as often as there is something to say about the subject, or at least until advertising wises up.
This is not just due to my recently celebrating the 45th anniversary of my 29th birthday; math reveals just how old I am chronologically – if addition gets the better of you, check the post’s headline for an answer -- but certainly not attitudinally.  I am of a certain age, but it has little to do with how I behave, think, and perform.
The rock-and-roll business, to its credit, gets it.
The tone-deaf advertising business does not, and, sadly, never will.

February 2024 News: Exciting Shoreline Greenway Trail News; State Street Re-Design & Phase IV Updates; CT Trail Census; Rock to Rock
Tumblr media
Dear Friend of the Farmington Canal Greenway,
We wanted to wish you a happy (almost-) springtime and provide you with a few important updates:
* Shoreline Greenway Trail Information Session, February 29, 6pm (Virtual)
Tumblr media
The City of New Haven is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, February 29th to discuss plans for the New Haven portion of the Shoreline Greenway Trail, which the City of New Haven has received $9 million since December 2022 to complete. It will connect the current terminus of the Shoreline Greenway Trail in East Haven with the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and East Coast Greenway in the Long Wharf area. We are really glad to be participating in the CT Trail Census again this year, as we have since 2017. Participating in this research project provides us really valuable data about trail usage in New Haven and across the state. Last year our infrared counters showed that there were over 150,000 trips taken on the trail in New Haven, and the trendline continues to go up, up, up! We need help this year with collecting manual count forms that enable us to calibrate our infrared sensors. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out with this fascinating and useful project – we really need help completing some manual counts to make sure our infrared counter is calibrated correctly!

In The Mail
Once again, technology rules the roost, taking jobs with it but creating new ones in its wake. It is a never-ending cycle of progress, and while it has produced a net good, there are still people who complain about the disruptions.
Because, you know…those jobs.
Like at the grocery, where staffed checkouts are systematically being replaced by self-check. You would think the Russians were coming to get us or some other Cold War-era fear mongering. Post your Facebook memes and virtue signal all you want when you loudly proclaim in-store that you do not work for Walmart.
A century ago, young women were the victim of technology, when mechanical switchboards were rolled out and suddenly their role as telephone operators was no longer needed to make connections. These were entry-level jobs for women, and the machines made them irrelevant in the workforce. Well, for a while. People complained, of course, but women adapted. And here we are. Technology is like that.
I suppose those same kinds of people will be upset that Netflix is finally ending its DVD-by-mail subscription program. All those order fulfillers will have to find something else to do. Launched in 1997 as a disrupter to the bricks-and-mortar movie rental shop (Blockbuster, I’m looking at your empty storefronts right now), the company added streaming in 2008, and four years later, started producing in its own original content. The way we have watched television has never been better.
Tumblr media
As recently as a couple of years ago, Netflix had about two million people still signed up for DVDs-by-mail, but this last April the company announced the sunset would come. And that date is 29th September, after which point the company will no longer send out discs. Current estimates peg the declining number of subscribers at a little more than a million.
Part of me says it is hard to believe that there are still a million or so people waiting days to feed their movie desires. Netflix may have been cheaper and convenient, but waiting for the postal worker to deliver your discs presents the same problem that e-commerce in general has been trying to overcome: the time and space gap. You better plan your weekend viewing now, on Tuesday.
But there is a small sliver of a silver lining on the dark cloud of progress, because if you are one of those remnant million or so, Netflix is going to toss in as many as 10 additional titles on your final orders. Better yet, they don’t want you to return anything after the end of this month. Because, what are they going to do with those old discs anyway?
I used to be a tangible media kind of guy. I insisted on owning music CDs as well as my movies, first in VHS and then DVD. I treated them like my books, because they were part of my library. I still buy books, but haven’t bought music or movies in years. Who needs to own things when you can just pay a few bucks each month (OK $20?) to tap into a massive online library? I could never begin to purchase all of that content.
While we have already discussed streaming subscription fatigue and all that, it is hard to deny our lives being improved by the changes in how we consume media. And yes, those online libraries do change over time, thanks to licensing agreements. You won’t be able to watch Breaking Bad on Netflix after 2025. No telling where it will wind up, but somebody will grab it for sure. It’s still all good, though. Even with all of my monthly fees, I am still saving money compared to how much I once spent on media.
As for technology in general, beyond how we consume media, we need not look very far to see all the disruptions that came along not just during our lives, but those before. In practically every case, jobs and workers were displaced. Do you pump your own gas (except in New Jersey!)? Pay your bills and do your banking online? Buy airline tickets, rent cars, and book hotels online? Check your own groceries? I’ll wait.
Sounds like a documentary waiting to be made, how all of these changes came along and…drumroll…here we still are. We adapted, just like the young women a century ago. We adapted, just like the farriers who shod horses before the advent of the car. We adapted, just like the former travel agents, bankers, and all the others. Yeah, I’d watch this. On Netflix, of course.

Florence Dore March 29, 2023 - 4:30 pm
Frost Library, CHI Think Tank
In 1916, English musicologist Cecil P. Sharp and his assistant Maude Karpeles traveled to the mountains of Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina to see whether there were ancient English ballads still being sung in the rural U.S. South. There were. In a North Carolina mountain town called Allanstand, they found a forty-four year old woman pregnant with her tenth child, one Mary Sands, who sang for them a seventeenth-century ballad entitled "The Daemon Lover." As Sands sang, they transcribed, and Sharp published "The Daemon Lover" in his 1917 anthology English Folksongs from the Southern Appalachians. Half a century later, Bob Dylan recorded this very same ballad during his second recording session ever, for Columbia Records in New York.
Between Sharp's written transcription of "The Daemon Lover" in North Carolina and Dylan's 1961 taping in Columbia's New York studios, two Vanderbilt professors responsible for hatching the midcentury literary movement called New Criticism wrote novels based on ballads. Robert Penn Warren takes his plot for The Cave (1959) from the 1925 hillbilly ballad "The Death of Floyd Collins," and it was none other than "The Daemon Lover" that Donald Davidson adapted for the novel he wrote in 1953, The Big Ballad Jamboree. (It was postuhumously published in 1996.) "The Daemon Lover" also appears as both printed lyric in Understanding Poetry—the wildly influential New Critical literary tome that Warren edited with Cleanth Brooks in 1934—and as a banjo recording on the Folkways Anthology of American Folk Music. Folklorist Robert Cantwell has described this set of recordings as "the enabling document" of the American folk revival, and rock write Griel Marcus maintains that it was the source for Dylan's enigmatic Basements Tapes, which he recorded with the Band in 1967 withheld from the public for almost a decade.
How shall we understand the fact that the Bard of Rock, as Dylan has been dubbed, shared an interest in the very same ballad as bourgeoning New Critic and brutal segregationist Donald Davidson? How is it possible that "The Daemon Lover" both stands as defining literature itself in Brooks and Warren's volume and gives rise to the American folk revival? In this talk, Professor Florence Dore (UNC Chapel Hill) will show how tracking the life of "The Daemon Lover" clarifies a profound connection between cultural forms that have been understood in opposition to each other. What we have considered to be high literature, reserved for study within university bounds, turns out to be utterly enmeshed with vernacular music, a popular form widely available to all. This is no minor claim. Indeed, unpacking the role of vernacular music in American conceptions of high culture helps us better understand the crucial problem of civic belonging, an issue that defines the current political landscape in the United States. The widespread sense of disenfranchisement in the present has led to a damaging skepticism about democracy as a legitimate form of government. The history of vernacular music contains within it the seeds of inquiry into what counts as "the public" in democratic life, and thus serves as defining in what is now known as "the public humanities."
This talk will be part of a traveling public humanities program that aims to address the crisis in what defines a "public" by bringing discussions about these topics into public settings. The Ink in the Grooves Live, or Ink Live, consists of events that combine discussion with one of the most engaging and accessible cultural forms: live music.
Professor Dore will be joined by the eminent guitarist Mark Spencer. Mr. Spencer has accompanied a wide range of artists, including Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders and Laura Cantrell. He is a current member of the influential Americana band Son Volt.
Professor by day and rock star by night, Florence Dore is a singer-songwriter and Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She just released her second album, Highways and Rocketships (Propeller Sound Recordings), produced by Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, and published The Ink in the Grooves: Conversations on Literature and Rock n Roll (Cornell University Press). She is also the co-executive producer for the Billboard-charting compilation album Cover Charge. She is currently on tour promoting new record and book, joined by the dB’s rhythm section, Gene Holder and Will Rigby, and Mark Spencer of Son Volt.
