A World of Mountains Caught in Darkness as Evening Approaches (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: An image captured a short time after sunset from the outdoor dining area in the Chisos Mountains Lodge. The view was looking to the northwest towards The Window with Vernon Bailey Peak and Carter Peak. My thinking in composing this image was to keep the Chisos Basin area more or less in silhouette and let the brighter areas beyond The Window be the focus, by being both in the image center as well as from the light still shining in that area. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted, as well as cropping some of the foreground for the final image.

Hossam, his wife Hanan, and their family of four originally hoped to escape the ongoing war and genocide in Gaza. Despite tireless efforts, they have only raised €1,800, not even enough for a single person to escape, let alone six (for reference, it costs about €5000 for ONE PERSON to evacuate to safety).

With their escape seemingly slipping out of reach, they shifted their dream to something as simple—and heartbreaking—as building a single room atop the ruins of their home. But even that plan has proved impossible.

The donations are so scarce that they cannot afford the cement and materials needed to build shelter. Now, they are forced to live in a torn tent, vulnerable to stray animals, insects, and the bitter cold. Their focus has shifted again—this time to merely surviving, providing food for their children. Even this has become an uphill battle, as the prices for basic necessities have skyrocketed, leaving the family hungry and helpless.

On top of it all, Hossam’s family is being censored. Every time they try to raise their voice on platforms like Tumblr, their accounts are banned, their messages erased, and their access blocked. They are being silenced in the middle of a war zone for trying to show people their grim and heartbreaking reality.

The Al-Qazzaz family's campaign desperately needs exposure and donations. Their fundraiser has stagnated at just €1,800; a heartbreakingly small amount that is not enough to escape, rebuild...or even survive. They need immediate help to feed their children and live with dignity amidst unimaginable fear, suffering, and uncertainty.

The night had been awfully long out in the forest on some sort of expedition with Ford. You two had been friends for a while and you really wanted to get closer to him so you were glad he finally took you along on his adventures but dear lord, were you not cut out for this. You two had been wandering for hours looking for some creature that was said to be really shy towards humans.

In the middle of a clearing, under the pale moonlight, Ford stopped in his tracks and put his arm out in front of you. He was watching the woods intently for something that had fully escaped your notice.

Then, all at once a little man in a pointy red hat jumped out of the bushes and landed right in Ford’s face. He tried to shake the Gnome off of him but to no avail. At the sight of that you sprang into action. You swiftly grabbed the butterfly net from his backpack and swung it across Ford’s face, capturing the Gnome in one elegant movement.

You put the net down on the ground and stood on the handle, so the Gnome couldn’t escape, before you looked up at Ford again. His hair was a mess and he had little scratches all over his face which looked at you in shock. After a second of gathering himself he burst into a wide grin.

Ford raised his arms in triumph. “That- You were amazing!” He took one large step towards you and pressed a messy kiss on your cheek. You were too stunned to speak when Ford, oblivious as always, took the net from under your foot to get rid of the Gnome.

"This comebacks really got me scrapping the bottom of the barrel." A rather husky sounding voice spoke up breaking the almost unnatural silence of the night guard's ofice. Due to a rather unfortunate acting career the former wrestling champion know by many as Beowulf had found himself falling on hard times and in desperate need of some extra cash to fund his big come back to stardom.

A help wanted ad had got his attention but he had neglected to check the fine print of what exactly he was getting into. He was an older guy and knew of the company in passing. It was just some kiddy pizza place how hard could sitting in an office for a few hours be? Of course the recent buy out of fazbear entertainment and total remodeling of the pizzaplex into a more adult oriented attraction was lost on him. He wasn't known for his brains after all.

Now the former star was in his office keys haphazardly jingling on his belt while he struggled to fit into his uniform. The muscle brained fighter had already torn the sleeves off to get his arms to fit properly, only for the buttons to give him trouble on top of that!

"287 lbs isn't that big... did they not have a bigger uniform in my size?" He grumbled to himself completely neglecting the clock on the wall as the hour rolled over to 12 am. His contract o my had him on for a day though he may get much more than he asked for.

The security office he was in wasn't too complicated a room, basically consisting of the desk with the camera screens and controls, the doors leading to two different hallways which also led to different regions of the pizzaplex, and a rolling desk chair which was a bit snug on him. He had also been given a complimentary faz-brand watch, which he could also check the cameras on, funnily enough, and also have messages sent to him by others.

You sat at the bar sulking, nursing your drink as you thought back on your argument with your mate.

You'd stormed out after she'd begun yelling accusations at you, blowing everything out of proportion.

Nesta had stormed into the living room, her face flushed with anger. "I can't believe you did that, Y/N!"

You looked up from your book, your brows furrowing. "What are you talking about, Nes? What did I do?"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about! You went out with your ex behind my back!" Nesta's voice trembled with anger.

Your eyes widened in surprise. "I bumped into her while shopping, and we just talked for a few minutes. It was harmless!"

"Harmless?" Nesta scoffed. "You know how much it bothers me when you're in contact with her!"

"I can't believe you're making such a big deal out of this! You know I love you. I have no feelings for her anymore."

Nesta shook her head, her voice cracking with emotion. "It's not about whether you still have feelings for her or not. It's about respect for our relationship. It's about boundaries."

The fight had gone on for another half hour before you both said things you regretted, and you had stormed off. Now, you had tears stinging your eyes as you sipped your drink.

A hand on your shoulder pulled you out of your self pity. You turned, finding Nesta with red rimmed eyes.

"Nes--"

"No, let me talk," she cut you off. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gone off on you like that. I just don't want to lose you, Y/N. You mean everything to me."

You reached out and took Nesta's hand, squeezing it gently. "You won't lose me. I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere. I promise."

Imagine watching your dreams of fleeing to safety slip away, day by day, until all that remains is the fight for the most basic needs required to survive.

When the war in Gaza began, this family's plan was clear: to escape the violence and build a future in safety, out of harm's reach. But despite tireless efforts, they have only raised €1,980 of the €30,000 needed to evacuate their family. With the cost of evacuating ONE SINGLE INDIVIDUAL being approximately €5,000, the amount raised so far isn’t even enough for one person to leave the war zone, let alone six.

Unable to escape, Hossam and Hanan adjusted their plan to something as simple—and devastating—as building a single room on the ruins of their former home. But even that has proved impossible. Now, Hossam and Hanan are forced to live in a tattered tent with their children (the youngest of whom is an infant), exposed to bitter cold, vermin, and constant danger. They are often forced to go to sleep hungry due to the skyrocketing prices of food that make even the most basic of necessities practically unaffordable.

Their reality in which they are forced to live is completely inhumane: Habiba, their four-month-old daughter, cries for hours because they can’t afford milk to feed her. Their young son was recently attacked by rats while the family tried to sleep in their makeshift shelter.

This is the daily struggle this precious family faces—one of survival, with no clear end in sight.

To make matters worse, Hossam and Hanan's voices are being systematically silenced. Every time they attempt to raise awareness of their plight, their social media accounts are banned, their posts deleted, and their pleas erased.

As of writing this post, Tumblr has deleted Hossam and Hanan's blogs yet again. Now unable to share their story here themselves, we are continuing to post on their behalf, so their voices can still be heard, uninterrupted by censorship.

NO ONE should be forced to stay in a war zone because they lack the means to pay fees to escape. This family deserves more than this desperate fight just to survive another day. They deserve the chance to rebuild, to dream, and to live with dignity.

We implore you to help however you're able. The Al-Qazzaz family’s fundraiser has stagnated at €1,980—a heartbreakingly small amount that barely scratches the surface of their need.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — "Security forces swept through large forests in Nigeria’s northwest region on Friday in search of nearly 300 children abducted from their school by motorcycle-riding gunmen in the latest mass kidnapping, which analysts and activists blamed on the failure of intelligence and a slow security response.

The abduction of the 287 children in Kaduna state, near the West African nation’s capital, is one of the largest school kidnappings in the decade since the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Borno state’s Chibok village in 2014 stunned the world. Analysts and activists say the security lapses that allowed that mass abduction remain.

The victims of the latest attack — among them at least 100 children aged 12 or under — were surrounded and marched into a forest just as they were starting the school day, said locals in Kuriga town, located 55 miles (89 kilometers) from the city of Kaduna. One man was shot dead as he tried to save the students, school authorities said."

The remote town of Kuriga, in Nigeria’s Kaduna state, is still reeling after dozens of armed extremists kidnapped hundreds of students out of their classes in broad daylight on the morning of March 7. Worried parents are now calling for government intervention, after days without any word from the abductors. As of March 13, the children have yet to be found. 

The AP reports that at least 287 students were abducted – with about 100 of them aged 12 or under – making it one of the largest kidnappings since the 2014 abduction of the Chibok girls, when 275 girls were taken from their school by Boko Haram.

The parallels between the two kidnappings have created more worry for parents, as even to this day nearly 100 of the Chibok girls remain missing. 

The March 7 kidnapping saw children taken from the school just as the day was starting, at around 8 a.m.. They were herded into the forest. It took authorities several hours to respond to the scene and begin a search operation, but it is unclear how deep into the forest the kidnappers went.

Locals have suggested that the abductors belong to a group of bandits who have been terrorizing remote villages in Nigeria’s northwest and central regions.

Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of Makurdi has called on the government to intercede on behalf of the Christian population, which he said is being targeted by these attacks. Bishop Anagbe told OSV: 

“The kidnappings, killings and destroying churches we are experiencing every day are aimed at finishing Christians. We are worried that despite such killings and kidnappings, the government has never arrested anyone. As a church, we now demand that the government act quickly to stop these vices that continue to dishearten people.”
