PEACE BLOCK
Date: 28 July 2023
Duration: 35 minutes at 11:45 PM
Depth:
It was a shallow meditation. I couldn’t have gone too deep in concentration because the room was much cooler than usual and I had not made any arrangements to keep myself warm. In fact, I disrupted meditation to wrap myself around better with whatever I had around but it was no use.
There was Peace but it didn’t have opportunity to grow.

We visited five areas from which Palestinians have been driven off by settler violence, often accompanied by the army guarding them. The picture is the school which remains in the area but which is soon to be demolished. Yes, it is true that many of them did not have permits but it is practically  impossible for Palestinians to get permits. Two per cent get permits. While on every settlement in the area houses are going up non stop. I have given two links as the first you may feel is biased but the second is from the Norwegian refugee council. .In Ha'aretz two years ago I found this citation:
The Israeli Civil Administration in the West Bank approved only 21 of 1,485 applications from Palestinians for construction permits in Area C, the portion of the West Bank under full Israeli control, between 2016 and 2018.
I went into the school building and saw the destruction there. I thought of Janus Korczak. I wonder what he would have thought of the way we are denying education to others. The destroyed school books lying around. The furniture, such as it was still lying around.
We visited Turmoes Aya again. But this time I was shocked. The village has beautiful buildings, mainly because very many of the inhabitants live and work in America and come back to build their homes here for their time or retirement. . This time I asked if the American embassy had visited them after the pogrom there. I was shocked to hear that they had only come after the Palestinians, many of whom are American citizens,   had demanded that they do so and not off their own. I wonder if they had been Christians if that would have been so. Arik had asked  us that those wearing kippot should put on hats and tuck  their ziziot (fringes) in their pants as the villagers regard them as a sign of the settlers. But our host said it was not necesarry.
I did ask Arik though if he did not think that some Palestinians were not so keen on our coming to show our sympathy and he said that at times he was told not to come as we did not do any good and our sympathy is  worth nothing which I can well believe. It kind of reminds me of the English gentry who would come with baskets of food to the poor and went back home feeling so good with themselves and I have often wondered how the poor,  grateful though they may have been for the food, really felt about these genteel Christian women.
And just to show you a little of what is happening here...remember what happened in America....well the soldiers here learn quicky.
And this is what one of my friends wrote and which I have  quoted before.
"In the last month the protest that has not stopped growing and has[N1]  influenced more and more people. The statement that the government was democratically elected is very true. Also the fact that they have they have a clear majority of 64 representatives.  So is the fact that those of us who are protesting are simply not  accepting  the will of the majority.   But  the thought never leaves me. What would have happened in Germany in the 1930s if the people there had also stood up and opposed the democratically elected government. A democratic power which  led to the greatest disaster in the world, not only to six million Jews murdered, a total of close to 50 million people  also lost their lives in this terrible war.

Reflection
This was my first time organizing a road trip with my friends and working collaboratively played an important role. We travelled by bus and bought and brought everything we need for barbecue except silverware and plates. Since I have close to none experience with cooking and food preparation my friends decided to help me and let me participate in making a barbecue which was a bit challenging. We enjoyed spending time together outdoors and now that I reflect on this trip I think that this is one of my favorite experiences this summer. Even though planning was a bit difficult, this was a great opportunity to develop new skills and generally rewarding experience for which I am really grateful.
