International Polar Bear Day

Polar bears are furry and majestic beasts that roam across the cold Arctic ice. However, in the past few decades, sea ice in the Arctic has been melting at an alarmingly fast rate, leading the polar ice cap to shrink over time. Because of this, polar bears have been losing their habitats, their sources of food and, ultimately, dying from starvation and exhaustion.

International Polar Bear Day aims to raise awareness of the issues threatening these creatures and encourage change.

Why polar bears are the perfect Arctic animal

Polar bears are the apex predators of the Arctic, perfectly adapted to the icy landscape and ocean. It’s thought that they diverged from the brown bear as far back as 6 million years ago – as they moved north, they gradually evolved to brave the formidable polar conditions.

With their thick fur and ample body fat providing plenty of insulation, along with their small ears and tails minimizing heat loss, these ice bears are often more at risk of overheating than they are of freezing! Pair this with their large, padded paws, which turn them into powerful swimmers as well as proficient Arctic explorers, able to spread their weight on thin ice and grip onto the slippery surface, and it’s no wonder these marine mammals dominate the food chain.

Polar bears are spread across the Arctic Ocean, from Alaska in the west to Russia in the east and with around two thirds found in Canada. They mainly eat seals, which they catch either by creeping up on them while they rest on the ice or more commonly through a method known as ‘still-hunting’, in which they lie in wait besides seals’ breathing holes, poised for their dinner to appear.

The Inuit and other Arctic peoples have a close relationship with these magnificent bears, showing them great respect in both their culture and their hunting techniques. Legends and folk tales depict the nanuq (the Inuit term for polar bear) as a wise and spiritual being with an affinity to humans. And when it comes to hunting, they make use of almost all parts of the bear for food, clothes, fuel and medicine, meaning nothing goes to waste.

History of International Polar Bear Day

Organized by Polar Bears International, International Polar Bear Day aims to raise awareness of the plight of polar bears and the threats they face, including disruption to denning and the effects of climate change.

Commercial activities such as oil and gas exploration, shipping, mining and tourism have been affecting the polar bear’s habitat and ability to survive, in particular by encroaching on the terrain that mother bears use to build dens and raise their cubs.

Alongside these industries competing for precious space in the Arctic, the polar ice cap on which the bears depend is also melting due to climate change. They live off of the sea ice, relying on it for hunting, traveling, breeding and denning. And it’s vital that they maintain sufficient fat reserves to protect against the cold. Depleted sea ice affects both their food source and their habitat, increasing the risk of starvation and making it harder to raise cubs.

As a result of these developments, polar bears have been classed as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which means this beautiful species could decline by over a third within three generations and is potentially at risk of extinction if temperatures continue to increase.

International Polar Bear Day is therefore all about conservation. To celebrate, people take the time to learn about polar bears, their ecosystem and how our actions have been harming their existence. They also pledge to reduce their carbon footprint and to speak with others about the effects that climate change has on polar bears.

The first to describe the existence of a Polar Bear, Constantine John Phipps makes a report about his trip to the North Pole the previous year.

2004 Oldest Polar Bear fossil is found

Considered to be more than 100,000 years old, the jawbone fossil of a Polar Bear is found on Prince Charles Foreland, which is an island in Norway.

2008 Polar Bears are listed as threatened

As their habitat on the icy seas continues to melt, Polar Bears are considered threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

2011 First International Polar Bear Day is Observed

In an effort to encourage raising awareness of the plight of these threatened animals, International Polar Bear Day is created.

2014 University of Saskatchewan commits to helping Polar Bears

How to celebrate International Polar Bear Day

We can all do our bit to help protect these vulnerable creatures and ensure that they thrive. Okay okay I'm here to clear this up once and for all.

Near's birthday is the 24th of August 1991. 1991 + 18 = 2009. Therefore, on the 24th of August 2009, Near turns 18. The official manga timeline is written in Volume 13, and can also be loosely followed along via dates scattered throughout the main story. The anime timeline shifts everything forward by 3 years, but major dates do not change.

We are introduced to Near and Mello in Chapter 59, on the day that they learn of L's death. This scene then continues in Chapter 61. The official date for this is December 5th, 2004, which makes Near 13 and Mello 14. Mello leaves the orphanage, and Near is handed the case. Near starts investigating on his own from this point forward.

Chapter 60 opens with a summary of events from 2005 to 2009. When we next see Near, he is meeting the U.S. president and presenting the evidence he has collected over the duration of the timeskip. The date given for this meeting is March 5th, 2009. The SPK is then established on March 12th, 2009. At this time, Near is 17.

Continuing with the Chapter 60 summary, we are given exposition that Kira's ideals gain momentum throughout the summer of 2009. We then see Mello and Near again for the first time when it is revealed that Mello kidnapped the NPA director. It can be assumed that the exposition summarises the months of June-August 2009, placing us in October by the time the story picks back up again. This is confirmed in Volume 13, which states that the NPA director is kidnapped on the 8th of October. Near is 18.

From Chapters 61-107, Near remains 18 throughout the entire duration of the story. The epilogue in Chapter 108 is dated January 28th 2011; Near is 19. The C-Kira oneshot is dated February 2013; Near is 21. The A-Kira oneshot is dated May 2019; Near is 27.

will the canucks ever end this spiral, or is the season over? a history lesson:

right now the vancouver canucks are…bad. they keep losing and they keep discovering new, worse ways to lose. it’s like they have a humiliation kink at this point. some people want the core blown up, some think quinn will refuse to re-sign in 2 years, some are convinced that tocchet is the root of our issues and he needs to be fired. team petey and team miller shirts would probably sell out faster than a rogers arena home game. they just lost consecutive games 6-1 and 5-1, in both of which they gave up 3 goals in the first period. neither of our two best forwards are even on pace to get a point per game this season, our goalie is one of the best in the world but has only played 8 games so far and is still trying to work his way back up to be the vezina-calibre performer he can be, we aren’t even in a wild card spot right now. quinn’s trying his best but even he’s only got 1.5 hands.

could things get any worse? well, yes, of course, it’s the canucks. but could they get better? also yes! let’s take a look at a spiral of canucks’ past.

on february 3, 2009, the canucks had lost 8 games in a row. they’d lost 9 home games in a row — they hadn’t won a game on home ice in over a month (dec 28, 2008, was the last). morale was low. fans were worried. would the team make the playoffs? they weren’t sitting in a playoff spot at that moment. in that stretch they lost games 6-4, 4-1, 5-3, 2-1, you name it. 3 of their last 4 had been OT losses (sound familiar?).

then, carolina came to vancouver. the canucks got a 2-goal lead — they gave up the 2-goal lead. with about a minute and a half left, in a tied game, the canucks took a penalty. they’d already given up multiple power play goals in this game, and it pretty much felt over. people pencilled in a 10th-straight home loss as despair settled back in over vancouver.

but what happened? alex burrows, perhaps best known for slaying the dragon in 2011, scored a shorthanded goal to win the game.

the two points that they collected pushed them back into a playoff spot. this was the start of a 4-game winning streak, and including this game they won 8 of their next 9. they finished the final stretch of the season 23-7-2 for an overall record of 45-27-10, and 100 points.

they swept the blues 4-0 in round 1 of the playoffs that year. they did lose to chicago in the next round, which tended to happen a lot back then. they also lost to chicago in the playoffs the next year (notable: they made the playoffs! both years!). but the year after that?

it’s the 2011 playoffs. round 1, game 7. the canucks had a 3-0 series lead that they’d given up. they’d been eliminated from the playoffs by chicago 2 seasons in a row — the team had the pieces, but they couldn’t get past the god damn blackhawks. the game went to overtime, and it almost ended with an incredible chance for chicago — luckily, luongo did Luongo Things. then, none other than our hero alex burrows got a breakaway, scored a goal, and he won the game. he slayed the dragon. and we all know what happened after that *drops mic* (the mic drop would feel better if the canucks had won the cup that year but let’s not get too crazy — it is the canucks, after all).

I Never was a fan of Larry but still curious about it. Most things look very far fetched to me and I don’t understand how people believe in it.

Hey, thanks! I'm glad you like it.

I hope you realize that each of these debunks, by definition, has to be quite long. We're talking about a decade and a half of lore. It's quite a bit of work. I'd appreciate it if from now on, you'd send them in separate asks, because I don't really know if I can fit it all in one post.

1- "When fetus Harry answered that he and Louis are dating. Like why?"

First of all, I hate the term "fetus Harry." I hate this whole classifying Harry by "eras" as if he was a Pokemon that evolved. It's dehumanizing.

Harry did not say that he and Louis were dating. That's a typical Larrie lie—taking what actually happened out of context.

Let's actually give it the context it needs.

From late 2010 on, fans "shipped" all the guys together in a bunch of different pairings. Larry was the most popular one, with Niam—Niall and Liam—not far behind. Harry and Louis were actually very close friends for a hot second, and the band in general was very online. They did Twitcams all the time, and followed and replied to fans constantly. One Direction and Justin Bieber spearheaded what's today known as Stan Twitter.

Larry was a joke everyone participated in. For instance the following two screenshots come from the same blog.

The post about Eleanor is from February 24 2012, and the post about Larry from February 27. Same year, same blog—three days apart.

Louis met Eleanor in March 2011, seemingly cheated on Hannah with Eleanor, broke up with Hannah in late July 2011, and by mid September 2011 was openly dating Eleanor.

Fans did not take well to this (even though the whole cheating thing wasn't really known). In fact, in late 2011 and early 2012, the main issue Louis defended Eleanor from wasn't conspiracy theorists, but fans of Hannah that wanted her back.

When he tweeted this—note the YOU in all caps...

It was because that day was Hannah's birthday and fans were tweeting up a storm about wanting Louis and Hannah back together. They were also tweeting pictures of them together and allegedly even sent those pictures to Eleanor directly.

Louis felt bad and defensive, so he decided to tweet that.

Parallel to this, since about late 2011, a group of people on Tumblr were taking the whole Larry thing seriously—going from joking about it to trying to prove it was actually real. It was a very small number of weirdos, and it would've probably never taken off had this whole Eleanor/Hannah thing not happened at the same time as Harry was starting to date Caroline Flack, who was 15 years Harry's senior.

Harry had been linked to other women before, but he was seen with Caroline a bit, was asked about it in interviews, and they interacted some on social media, which enraged fans. They mostly claimed it was the age gap (which would've been a fair criticism), but it was clear that for most the problem was jealousy (which is not fair at all).

In the context of Louis dumping the girlfriend the fandom liked and getting with someone they didn't, and Harry dating an older woman they definitely didn't like, impressionable fans started to get swayed more and more by conspiracy theories.

At first, it was a majority of jokes and a small number of people believing the conspiracy theories, but over time, slowly, it started to shift. Between 2010 and 2012, you could be just "A Larry shipper"—someone who liked them together and joked about it. From 2013 on, Larry shippers were basically extincted, replaced instead by "Larries", conspiracy theorists who truly believed they were together and tried to prove it.

When it was mostly jokes, Harry, Louis, and their friends and family, would go along with them. Almost all of "Larry proof" is those early stages, when there wasn't an actual conspiracy theory that was widespread yet and everyone followed along with the jokes.

Harry and Louis were close friends, and their moms also became quite close (they were of a similar age, similar area, background, both divorced, etc). Everyone went along with it. Until it started to get out of hand.

Now, if Louis was defensive about the whole Louhannah thing, I think you can only imagine how defensive he would get about the whole Larry thing when it started to cross over into conspiracy territory...

Fans not only insulted Eleanor, but started to directly harass her. They would email her university to "prove" that she wasn't who she said she was. They made theories about who her father was (Eleanor has posted her dad on Snapchat—it is not, in fact, a billionaire working for Jive Records). There was a whole whack ass theory about her having a twin/triplets... They started involving Louis' family—mainly his mom and sisters. They would pressure them to "confirm" Larry, and they'd get upset whenever it was denied.

Louis' sisters were quite young—Lottie was 13/14, Fizzy was 11/12, and the twins were 9/10 when all of this was brewing. They looked up to Eleanor, who became like an older sister to them, and they got pretty defensive of her, as little kids often do.

So, in turn, Louis got more upset at the whole thing and would often go on rants on Twitter to deny it. Eleanor and Louis' best friend, Stan, would also tweet alongside him. Sadly, this contributed to the proliferation of the conspiracy. The more attention he brought onto it, the worse it became. I don't blame him for it, to be perfectly clear, but that's just a version of the Streisand effect.

This whole thing unfolded between late 2011 and late 2012. It wasn't immediate. It wasn't that one day everyone was joking and the next everyone was a conspiracy theorist. It shifted slowly.

So, that's the context.

The interaction you mention happened March 17th 2012. One Direction was doing a signing in Boston. Their debut album, Up All Night, had come out March 13th in America, so they were signing that. A fan approached the table and talked to all the guys. Harry was last in line. When she got to him, Harry gave her a smile and she asked him, "Are you and Louis dating?" Harry looked quite tired (they all did) and didn't seem particularly amused by the question. He just nodded. The fan pressed, "You are?" to which Harry gave her a lazy, "Yeah." Then the fan said, "I figured," and, as she was ushered to leave the line, Harry gave her a lazy smile.

He didn't say they were dating. He just went along with a fan who joked about it. She was JOKING.

This is from the fan who asked this question, THE DAY after she asked the question. Not much of a Larrie if she's fantasizing about Harry romantically, huh? But I have more confirmation.

She actually thinks it's ridiculous that people are still going on about it, and thinks her question was "stupid". She quite literally wanted him to date Taylor Swift later that year...

She also confirmed that Harry was "being sarcastic":

So the fact that thirteen years later we're still having this conversation is insane. This is the person that took the video. She was never even a conspiracy theorist to begin with. She just liked them together.

And this is 100% the same fan. Her name is the same in both accounts (Daena), and she linked her old Twitter handle in the description of the video. It used to be YMCMBelieb. She has changed her Twitter handle since 2012, but if you search the old one on Twitter today, you'll find people replying to "Pogue_Malone."

Larries take Harry smiling at her "I figured" as him "being moved by her support." He was smiling at a fan who had paid to get his signature. He smiled at her when she first approached him, then smiled again as she left. The fan DIDN'T EVEN ACTUALLY THINK HE WAS WITH LOUIS. She was JOKING.

2- Mario interview when they used sex innuendo (who push who)

I'm adding this one here because it's just the same exact thing as we just went over. It was a joke. Harry and Louis are BRITISH.

British humour carries a strong element of satire aimed at the absurdity of everyday life. Common themes include sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek, banter, insults, self-deprecation, taboo subjects, puns, innuendo, wit, and the British class system. These are often accompanied by a deadpan delivery which is present throughout the British sense of humour.

The "Mario Kart" interview happened in February 16th 2012. Combine your typical British humor with the context of how the fandom treated the whole "Larry" thing in early 2012" and you have your answer.

They're just joking. I don't know what else to tell you. They're joking. They're not openly discussing their sex life in an interview. Larries need to choose—were they a closeted couple that was forced to have fake girlfriends and limit their interactions in public or were they telling the world what sexual positions they favored? You can't have both at the same time.

The Year In Doom & Gloom

Doom & Gloom From The Tomb celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, which is crazy. But what can I say, I keep finding cool live tapes and keep feeling compelled to share them with you ... whoever you are! I gave too much thought to this, I don't know why I care so much about this

So when I was making memes based on the @i-cant-sing Resident Evil 8 series and some of my dumb Head cannons. For one meme I had to do some math. Y/n was at least 12-13 years old during the events of RE7 so she can be at least 15-16 years old in RE8.

So Ethan was born 1984 so let's give a random day and month so February 20th, 1984, and Mia was given a full date of birth December 14, 1984. Ethan was like 27 years old and Mia was 26 years old when they were married on May 29th, 2011.

If Y/n was made on their honeymoon let's say May 31, 2011, and she would be born on February 21st, 2012. RE7 takes place in 2017 give it a random day so June 8th. That would make Y/n 5 years old and RE8 takes place on February 9, 2021, which would make Y/n 8 years old. Which wouldn't make sense so I have to redo the math.

So Mia was 19 years old in 2004 which would make Ethan 20 years old. Let's say Mia was 19 years old when she had Y/n. The average cycle of Months of pregnancy is 8-9 months but for this let's say 8 months. Y/n was born on November 2004 the day I gave was the 12th.

During RE7 2017 y/n was 12 years old and RE8 would make Y/n 16 years old. Fun fact the Re8DLC takes place in the year 2037 making Y/n 32 years old.

International Polar Bear Day

Polar bears are furry and majestic beasts that roam across the cold Arctic ice. However, in the past few decades, sea ice in the Arctic has been melting at an alarmingly fast rate, leading the polar ice cap to shrink over time. Because of this, polar bears have been losing their habitats, their sources of food and, ultimately, dying from starvation and exhaustion.

International Polar Bear Day aims to raise awareness of the issues threatening these creatures and encourage change.

Why polar bears are the perfect Arctic animal

Polar bears are the apex predators of the Arctic, perfectly adapted to the icy landscape and ocean. It’s thought that they diverged from the brown bear as far back as 6 million years ago – as they moved north, they gradually evolved to brave the formidable polar conditions.

With their thick fur and ample body fat providing plenty of insulation, along with their small ears and tails minimizing heat loss, these ice bears are often more at risk of overheating than they are of freezing! Pair this with their large, padded paws, which turn them into powerful swimmers as well as proficient Arctic explorers, able to spread their weight on thin ice and grip onto the slippery surface, and it’s no wonder these marine mammals dominate the food chain.

Polar bears are spread across the Arctic Ocean, from Alaska in the west to Russia in the east and with around two thirds found in Canada. They mainly eat seals, which they catch either by creeping up on them while they rest on the ice or more commonly through a method known as ‘still-hunting’, in which they lie in wait besides seals’ breathing holes, poised for their dinner to appear.

The Inuit and other Arctic peoples have a close relationship with these magnificent bears, showing them great respect in both their culture and their hunting techniques. Legends and folk tales depict the nanuq (the Inuit term for polar bear) as a wise and spiritual being with an affinity to humans. And when it comes to hunting, they make use of almost all parts of the bear for food, clothes, fuel and medicine, meaning nothing goes to waste.

History of International Polar Bear Day

Organized by Polar Bears International, International Polar Bear Day aims to raise awareness of the plight of polar bears and the threats they face, including disruption to denning and the effects of climate change.

Commercial activities such as oil and gas exploration, shipping, mining and tourism have been affecting the polar bear’s habitat and ability to survive, in particular by encroaching on the terrain that mother bears use to build dens and raise their cubs.

Alongside these industries competing for precious space in the Arctic, the polar ice cap on which the bears depend is also melting due to climate change. They live off of the sea ice, relying on it for hunting, traveling, breeding and denning. And it’s vital that they maintain sufficient fat reserves to protect against the cold. Depleted sea ice affects both their food source and their habitat, increasing the risk of starvation and making it harder to raise cubs.

As a result of these developments, polar bears have been classed as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which means this beautiful species could decline by over a third within three generations and is potentially at risk of extinction if temperatures continue to increase.

International Polar Bear Day is therefore all about conservation. To celebrate, people take the time to learn about polar bears, their ecosystem and how our actions have been harming their existence. They also pledge to reduce their carbon footprint and to speak with others about the effects that climate change has on polar bears.

1774 Polar Bears are first documented

The first to describe the existence of a Polar Bear, Constantine John Phipps makes a report about his trip to the North Pole the previous year.

2004 Oldest Polar Bear fossil is found

Considered to be more than 100,000 years old, the jawbone fossil of a Polar Bear is found on Prince Charles Foreland, which is an island in Norway.

2008 Polar Bears are listed as threatened

As their habitat on the icy seas continues to melt, Polar Bears are considered threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

2011 First International Polar Bear Day is Observed

In an effort to encourage raising awareness of the plight of these threatened animals, International Polar Bear Day is created.

2014 University of Saskatchewan commits to helping Polar Bears

In honor of International Polar Bear Day, the University of Saskatchewan commits to turning their thermostats up two degrees in the summer and down two degrees in the winter to do their part to limit global warming and save the Polar Bears.

How to celebrate International Polar Bear Day

We can all do our bit to help protect these vulnerable creatures and ensure that they thrive. To celebrate this special day, why not donate some money to the Polar Bears International organization to help fund its research into polar bears and their conservation? You can also choose to adopt a polar bear, either for yourself or a loved one, through organizations such as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

If you’re lucky enough to live near one, visit a local zoo or polar bear sanctuary to get up close and personal with these amazing animals. These kinds of organizations also contribute to conservation and research, for example by caring for orphaned cubs, so it’s great to support them and their efforts. And any intrepid explorers out there can even encounter polar bears in the wild through careful and considerate ecotourism opportunities.

If there’s a theme song to epitomize Pisces Season 2025, it has to be 1969’s “Crystal Blue Persuasion” by Tommy James and the Shondells.

There is something of a sense of climax about Pisces Season 2025. It’s the Sun’s final trip through Pisces while Neptune is also in the sign, during our lifetimes, for one thing. Saturn and the North Node are there, too, adding to the consumation and apotheosis feels.

Neptune entered Pisces back in 2011 - during these past 14 years, what has changed for you? There may not be anything obvious - that isn’t how Neptune works. Look first at what your natal Neptune is up to - then, which of your natal house(s) has Neptune/Pisces traveled through - next, look for major transiting aspects from Neptune to your natal Sun, Moon, &/or angles for clues about what happened - finally, the natal house(s) with Pisces on the cusp for the closure part.

The Sun transiting through here literally sheds light on the situations. It’s a good time to review the past 14 years, in preparation for the Neptune/Aries experience just ahead.

Thursday, February 27 - New Moon, 9°41’ Pisces. Not a good New Moon for setting any intentions. Maybe it’s because “eclipse season” looms?

Sunday, March 2 - Sun/Pisces square Jupiter/Gemini, 12°25’. Can show overcommitment, confusion, overconfidence, and escapism. We can possibly use the energy to turn away from taking on too many projects.

Having Saturn conjunct an eclipse is painful; there’s a lot of hard work letting go of something(s) whose time has come and gone. (Long gone, probably.) Let it go, and open up for new things to grow.

Sun/Pisces conjunct North Node/Pisces, 27°29’

Sun/Pisces conjunct Neptune/Pisces, 29°36’
