So... my parents would have been married 50 years today.

They should have a big party with pictures and resentful grandchildren stuffed into nice clothes and mints no one can eat. Cake that’s too sweet, punch, photographs, uncomfortable chairs.

That’s my memory of my Grandparents’ 40th and my aunt and uncle’s 50th. It was a good day. I wore a scratchy sweater. I played hide and seek with the second cousins.

My Grandparents 50th was the day after my parents’ 24thanniversary. Their 24th was the day we all realized that my dad was going to die. Like in the next few days. It went from ordinary hospital visit to death watch.

So they got 24 years instead of 50+.

He got 46 years instead of 80+.

Fuck cancer.
