Earlier this morning I saw a post on my "for you" feed from someone presenting in-class written exams as the obvious, easy answer to student cheating via generative AI. I wrote this whole response to add on a reblog but I'm not actually eager to get into a potential argument with a stranger, so instead I'm posting it here and even if it gets no notes, that's fine.

This is not meant to be any kind of personal attack on people who use timed, written exams, but instead to engage in the time-honored practice of academic debate. These are just my two cents.

Some of my colleagues have turned to the same solution suggested—in-class blue book exams to combat AI and other fears of plagiarism. I personally really, really do not want that to become the norm for several reasons, despite the fact that I teach in a humanities field where the written exam has continued to be popular even after its drop-off in other areas of study (which has been happening since at least the 70s).

To begin with, timed, in-class exams present issues for accessibility. If you teach with exams, you will have had the experience of having to arrange alternate proctored exam times for students who need reasonable accommodations or who were ill the day of the test. The good news is that universities typically have systems in place to assist with this, but clearly it's not a one-size-fits all easy solution.

At least in the humanities, where these exams are most common, an in-class written exam does not replicate any real-world task students might reasonably expect to encounter. What pedagogical goal does the exam serve? Unless writing under pressure is one of your learning objectives, students (and your course in general) would benefit more from a different approach to evaluation.

High-stakes, in-class exams have been shown over and over again to not be a particularly effective measure of student learning and inherently prioritize memorization over actual application of learned skills and knowledge. This is not a new critique. From "A review of the benefits and drawbacks of high-stakes final examinations in higher education" (2023):

In the scholarly literature on assessment in higher education, questions relating to the pedagogical value of final examinations surface repeatedly. For example, John Biggs (2001, p. 234) argues that “invigilated examinations are hard to justify educationally” citing concerns about plagiarism and contract cheating as the leading “distorted priority” for their ongoing use. Scholars such as Gibbs (1992) and Ramsden (1992) warn against the reliability of examinations as a measurement of student learning, noting that questions assessing the recall of facts can often be answered without an understanding of the fundamental principles of the topic or a more complex understanding of the ways in which concepts are integrated in real-world scenarios. Such critiques are by no means new. Indeed, examinations have received criticism since their inception in Imperial China when they were widely criticised for their emphasis on rote memorisation, testing of skills rather than knowledge, the prevalence of cheating, and for cases of mental disorders that were anecdotally attributed to failing the high-pressured examinations (Kellaghan & Greaney, 2019). Similar criticisms were made of the written examinations introduced at Oxford and Cambridge in the nineteenth century which were perceived to dissuade originality through their focus on recall and to contribute to social stratification by benefiting the most privileged (Kellaghan & Greaney, 2019).

I don't want to go on too long. Whether you do in-class exams or don't is entirely your business, but I'd hate for everyone to start pretending they're a perfect solution to cheating (which students do on in-class tests too) or that this is the way we've always done it (not really true) and therefore is the best way forward.

It’s 9.30 pm and I’m incredible tired.

I have no idea if it’s a first sign that I’m getting a cold (it started with me being incredible tired in the evening and being really sick the last time when i had a really nasty cold) or if it’s simply the massive amount of work I’m having currently.

I really hope it’s the latter because right now, I really can’t get ill.

Not only want my bosses a list of books that aren’t cataloged yet (for various reasons - I finished around 340 but I guess there are at least 500 in total so about 150 I still have to add to the list). I’m already lucky they agreed to let me create a list rather than cataloging them entirely - that would have been absolutely impossible. 

Let’s do some math: In best case, I can catalogue 1 book every 10 minutes (not possible if there are difficult cases among them and I already had a couple) - so 6 books per hour. I work 39 hours per week. So even under perfect conditions (nobody needing help which takes away time, no visitors, no difficult cases, I’m at 100% mental capacity to work), I’d get 234 books per week cataloged. So 468 book in these two weeks I’m working on it.

However, especially this week the conditions were anything but perfect. It feels like all the time I’m disturbed - visitors needing help, one of our bosses making me get books for him, chatting with a colleague who’s leaving (one of the few pleasant disturbances), another colleague annoying me with stuff we need to do together but I’m currently not able to do because of the work load. Stuff that can wait til after the deadline. So I guess around 400 to 450 books (and that’s very generous) would have been more realistic. Which is far from the estimated 500 books.

However, my bosses want the list to be finished on Monday. I have no idea if they want it at 8 am, by midday or if I can work on it the entire day. Because I’m definitely not able to add 150 (or probably more) books on one day, no matter how slimmed down the cataloging is. 

I managed to add between 50 and 100 books yesterday and my brain was fried.

On top of that, I should be collecting the journals for our bookbinder because that needs to be done this year as well. I would have started that last week Monday (and probably finished at the end of this week) if my bosses had waited with that stupid list.

And on top of all that, this weekend/the close future is also somewhat busy private life-wise. This weekend (starting tomorrow afternoon) we’re on a practice weekend with my church choir for our concert on the second Sunday of Advent. I have that weekend, one regular choir practice and an additional choir practice the Saturday before our concert.

So I really can’t get sick right now.

i'm sorry if you don't answer these kind of questions, but i can't find a reason to live. my fear of death is the only thing keeping me alive. i keep trying to get better and stay positive but it's just one failure after another. can you please help me

My friend, the simple act of reaching out has made a stranger on the other side of the internet connect to you, hurt for you, worry for you. Until you find a reason of your own, stay alive for me, and all the strangers you could turn into reasons to live, all the possible friends and reasons that are out there that you can’t see yet. It is ok to find reasons in anything or anyone, if you can’t find a reason for yourself right now. My reason used to be the whipped cream they put on chillers at Gloria Jeans. I stayed alive for whipped cream. And now I’m living for other, less dairy-based reasons. Those reasons weren’t apparent to me then, but they are now. I promise the same will happen for you.  I have been there. So many of us have. I am so proud of you for trying so hard to stay positive, it isn’t easy and you are being so brave! The thing about positive thinking is that it isn’t always going to be effective when you’re in a crisis, and it sounds like that’s where you are right now. Mental illnesses take us to an illogical place, and you can’t trust the negative thoughts you have when you’re in a place like that. Try and get yourself into a mindset where your brain is a separate entity and you have to decide how to deal with it. You could be its carer: you need to protect this tiny, scared baby. You need to be strong for them. You know it’s going to be ok, and you’re going to cradle it and tell it that it’s alright.If parental care isn’t your style, let yourself be mad at it; it’s trying to ruin your day and hell if you’re going to give it the satisfaction. It’s a chemical imbalance in your brain, if you could hold it in your hand you could CRUSH IT, and you are a flesh and blood human, it can’t beat you?? Give yourself an enemy to usurp, tell it to go suck a lemon! Use harsher, less PG rated words if you need to. But get angry at IT, not YOU. YOU are just trying to be a living breathing human, here. YOU’RE not at fault.Either way, it’s so important to keep telling the illogical thoughts “NO”, and those no’s don’t need to be positive right now, they can be methodical; “it’s not practical to be thinking like this,” “I know you feel this way now, but I have to do my laundry”.Distract yourself as best you can until you’re able to get better help; favourite light-hearted movies, games, something that will take your attention. If there are people around you that can help, let them know you need them. And I will stress that again; LET THEM KNOW. You are not a burden, they NEED to know. If you haven’t already, I urge you to see a professional as soon as you can, even your gp can prescribe something that might help. Finally making that call to get professional help/medication opened my eyes. You can live a life where you’re not in constant combat with your brain. The Dancing Plague of 1518

It was the 14th of July 1518 when Frau Troffea in Strasburg, Alsace left her home and started dancing. She kept doing so for the first day only collapsing from exhaustion briefly. By the third day her feet were drenched in blood and she was carted off to a shrine for St.Vitus in Saverne as the Imlin family’s chronicle notes. Paracelsus recorded how her illness was attributed to this saint due to his representing conditions like the falling sickness or plague.The Dancing Plague is one of the most singular and puzzling medical events of history and even now the reasons for it occurring are wildly debated. The world that Frau Troffea lived in was one in which women could birth monsters, saints and demons could intercede with humanity and magic and religion were central ways of understanding the world.A killer dance must be understood in light of this.

Soon other people were joining Troffea in the deadly dance. Within four days thirty-four people were infected in total ,the 17th century chronicle of Oseas Schad discusses that this soon jumped to two hundred and within four weeks of Troffea’s dance this number doubled to four hundred as the Imlin family’s chronicle said.

To the citizens it was evident that either the sufferers blood was overheated or spiritual figures like God,the Devil or Saints were involved. The city’s Council of Twenty One argued for the former cause to start with ,prohibiting masses for it at first as in their view it was the Galenistic overheating of blood which was the Cause.And such natural sickness,one chronicler noted,required natural curative means.Galen treatments for it should have involved cooling through cold foods or bleeding yet the actions took by the city’s government did not involve this. Instead more dancing was prescribed…

The Council of Twenty-One ordered two town guidhalls to be set aside for dancers and employed guards to watch over the sufferers as they danced. Daniel Specklin noted that people danced with the victims by the sound of fife and drum with chronicler Hieronymus Gebwiler noting “they dance day and night with those poor people”. It didn’t work.

And thus people turned to spiritual means. Gebwiler ,a Alsation Humanist argued that the Strasbourgeois had been punished by God for forgetting Christ’s suffering for them and stated that the glee of people watching one woman who danced for six day led to her passing it on through being watched. Even dancing in and of itself was a cause for the curse as the citizens had danced shamefully ,in blasphemous fashion and with the wrong people or in the wrong places. This act of rhythmic movement that seems so neutral to us today was symbolically powerful enough to cause those like Calvin to ban it gradually everywhere in Geneva between 1539-49.

To combat it, documents by Sebastian Brant in the Munincipal Archive of Strasbourg preserve accounts of how on august 3rd dancing was banned with a fine on it of 30 shillings til St Micheals in September 29th.Only stringed insturments could be used in Masses or at Weddings as it was believed that drums and tambourines could make the condition worse and on top of these things Loose persons like prostitutes and gamblers(Leichtfertigen) were banished and a hundred pound candle was bought for a high mass and three low masses. They then turned to St.Vitus.A child maytr ,saint and holy helper representing a disease he was prayed to for conditions like epilepsy and as the crisis deepened the new dancing disease or plague. Consequently were put in carts and took away to the Saverne St Vitus shrine where they were prayed over by the priests and given pfennigs to offer to the church. Specklin notes how they fell down at images of St. Vitus , were given little crosses and red shoes with the sign of the cross on them and were blessed with holy water. Many seemed to recover. By August and September the plague started by one lone woman’s dance drew to a close , but not without many horrific deaths occurring as people moved continuously until their bodies could not take it anymore.

The medieval period was filled with cases of similar dancing themed mass delusions or illnesses. In 1247 the children of the Germanic town Erfurt danced with some dying, 200 people in Maastricht during 1278 did likewise while the summer of 1374 Rhineland provinces to Aachen, Ghent, Metz and Strasbourg danced and had delusions of a devil called Friskes making them do it ,1375 saw it in France and Holand, 1381 an outbreak of dancing occurred in Augsburg, 1428 saw it occur in Zurich and the cloisters of St. Agnes in Schaffhausen where monks danced until they died.

The mass of dancing plagues like this before and after the 1518 outbreak was therefore substantial…It’s just the 1518 version captured the public imagination and crystalized people’s reactions to it in an ever larger Renaissance world of disseminated news and knowledge. The surprisingly fact that many of the outbreaks between the 14th century and 1518 outbreak happened along the Rhine and Mosel rivers begs thinking about. Why was this area so damaged by the dancing phenomena? What causes do we now attribute to it?

Modern explanations for the event are as varied as contemporary ones. It has been argued that the condition is evidently psycho-physical as touch or contact isn’t needed to pass it on. It could not have been a wholly somatic condition but something else. The explanation used for such dancing symptoms in Italy was Tarantism. This was a dancing condition caused supposedly by the bite of a local spider in the Apulian region of Italy as deforestation during the 1400s-1600s had caused them to spread. However, their venom even when combined with the heat of the area is unlikely to have produced proper dancing. Ergot poisoning is another suggestion. Eugene Backman claims that the mold of ergot formed on damp rye stalks which would have been cultivated in the area of Strasbourg. The problem with this reasoning is that everyone should have been affected if it was throughout all the rye being eaten. Also it causes delusions, yes, but also gangrene which none of the sufferers are described as having in the records and dancing over fits is not a symptom of ergot.

John C. Waller suggests a combination of factors,both physical and psychic. It could not be a heretical cult as some historians claim as the sufferers begged for help and the church never saw them as heretics.Instead the degredation and chaos of Renassiance life in Strasbourg likely had a mental and physical impact on people. Serious famines had occurred in 1492,1502,1511 while drought occurred in summer 1516.1517 was deemed the bad year by one resident.With agricultural and thus monetary and food uncertainties many families took out high interest loans,slaughtered their livestock and begged for charity in Strasbourg. A bad pox had arrived in 1495 and syphilis was introduced by mercenary pike men returning from the Italian wars in 1517. August of that year saw many attending a holy procession ‘contra pestilentiam’ and begging the virgin,st Sebastian and s troche for mercy. The English sweating sickness arrived in Strasbourg by 1517 killing people in a mix of copious sweating,delirium and unquenchable thirst.All of this,as Waller shows, represents the fact that during the year 1518 a number of phenomena came together to make this astounding event possible..The people of Strasbourg had been beaten down for decades by circumstances out of their control which affected their health and impacted the way they approached the world mentally.

As works on the subjective experience of psychosis across different cultures has shown, like Luhrmann et al’s paper, just location and the resulting specific culture of a place can greatly impact one’s experience of auditory hallucinations and other symptoms. In places like Ghana voices have been found to be more positive and accepted by the person with them than places like the USA where they are more negative. The world of 1518 Strasbourg was one of gods and demons, plagues and monsters, heaven and hell…Whether the condition that prompted the dancing in this case or others was physical, mental or both is still unclear, but nevertheless it was something that could happen and did. Four hundred people of the city of Strasbourg took to their feet and moved until dead or bloody. Anything was possible in the Renaissance world they lived in and sometimes you just have to dance.

This essay was written to tell my lovely reader about this novel which enhanced my reading and analysis skill, it’s entitled “Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell”. I enjoyed reading it because many conflicts happened and quite interesting, I could simply say that between one character to another are connected to each other. Thus, I assumed that the author created this story within family matters because the conflicts only circled on the same character and they are related to each other. This story consists of two kinds of point of view, some of them use first-person point of view and the other used third-person point of view, therefore, I could imagine the sense of every point of view. The narration style is quite easy to understand and predictable, this is why the story have its own interest to read. At the same time, this novel was truly mesmerizing, I could feel the happiness, the sadness also and tense as if I was in the same situation as the character. The theme of this novel is mystery also mixed up with romance inside, so it is not only about the struggle of finding a person who lost but also about the beautiful side of love. Moreover, the author wants us to explore more about the plot, in the first chapter she brought us in the present time which explained about what happened after the incident. In some chapters, she succeed to make the reader imagining how tragic and pity when Ellie was kidnapped and how she survived through the dark time.

The story begins when Ellie Mack, disappeared in 2005 on her way to library, “When you are the parent of a child who walked out of the house one morning with a rucksack full of books to study at a library a fifteen-minute walk away then never came home again, then there is no such thing as overreacting.”(page 9), from this passage, I conclude that Ellie’s disappearance was fully questionable and Laurel regret it because she couldn’t find out what happened to Ellie, she felt the sadness of losing her but she was quite strong to accept the reality, she always got the reflection of Ellie all the time. Meanwhile, Noelle Donnelly who used to be Ellie’s math tutor was being suspected as the person who kidnapped Ellie. “No, there’s more to life than university, Miss Smarty Pants. There’s more than just certificates and qualifications. I have them coming out of my ears. And look at me, sitting here with you in your lovely warm house, drinking your lovely Earl Grey tea, getting paid a pittance to fill your brain with my knowledge. Then going home to nothing.”(page 26), this line shows Noelle was being weird, suspicious and felt lonely, she sounded like a desperate woman who needs love from everyone around her.

In the middle of the story, I figured out the prejudice which leads to the conflict, “Sorry, you look…” But she doesn’t say it. She doesn’t say, you look just like my lost girl… the dimple, the broad forehead, the heavy-lidded eyes, the way you tip your head to one side like that when you’re trying to work out what someone’s thinking. (page 68), this line explained about Laurel who had expectation about her lost girl, also an instinct of a mother could sense the existence of her own daughter in Poppy’s appearance. This passage leads to the explanation about the oddity that happened during the conflict, but Laurel as a mother tried to act normal without showing her true feelings towards Poppy.

In this this novel, not only about a mother who lost her lovely daughter but also the romance between Laurel and Floyd, Poppy’s father. At first paragraph as I already told, the conflicts circled throughout the same character. Thus far, the author explained about the side of being a mother, motherhood is something that we should prepared well. On the other side, parental is one of the most difficult part of being an adult, also seeing new person that comes into our lives might be dangerous if we do not explore more about their backgrounds. In this case, people must be aware of each other because sometimes they can be a person who has two different personalities that could change into a bad person.

The reason why Noelle Donnelly kidnapped Ellie Mack was because she wanted revenge on Floyd, the man who made her fall in love but he dumped her and the fact that she couldn’t keep her pregnancy with Floyd. “And Ellie Mack was possibly the most golden girl I had ever countered.” (page 163), from this monologue, I assumed that Noelle was obsessed with Ellie, she tried to make sure to do everything to get her and to get attention from Floyd, “The only hope I had was that when the baby came you’d fall in love with it, that you wouldn’t be able to live without it and that we’d be inextricably linked. Forever.” (page 200), this passage is the proof that Noelle Donnelly was really in love with Floyd, her obsession for him is abnormal and crazy, it also implies that Noelle had a mental illness which caused the kidnapped crime and made Ellie as a surrogate mother for her. Meanwhile, in the story, Ellie as the victim was trying to defense herself from something bad that might happen, “Ellie struggled against the cuffs around her ankles, pounded her feet against the end of the bed. She roared and thrashed.”(page 183), it is normal if we defense ourselves from the harm because human instinct can be strong enough if it comes to self-defense. During the kidnapping, Ellie got threatened by Noelle so that she had to keep herself safe to survive.

At the end of the story, I felt sorry for both character, Ellie and Donnelly. Ellie ended up dead because she did not get the treatment well. Unfortunately, Noelle’s feeling to Floyd became a nightmare, she sacrificed another people’s life in order to get the love back from the man whom she truly love. “I made her for you, with another woman’s womb and another man’s sperm.”(page 234), her mental illness has been revealed by this dialogue. Why did I say that? Because Noelle seemed calm down, I can feel the way she talked, she act normal and pretend that nothing happened. “A girl called Ellie had that baby for me. I was never pregnant, you dumb idiot.”(page 234), this passage clearly told us that Noelle did something unforgivable to Ellie and her family. Based on the last sentence, it implies that Noelle did not regret what she did to Ellie, that is an unfortunate thing. Noelle’s obsession towards Floyd made her to do something over her logic, she did not think twice about their feelings, she failed to understand the situation. Love is such a blessing to all human being, but if it comes to the wrong way, it could make us to do something regrettable.

Health Anxiety May Increase Risk Of Heart Disease, Research Finds

Rather than frequently visiting a GP, people who unnecessarily worry about their health should seek treatment for the anxiety disorder, the paper suggests. 

Fit and healthy people who worry about developing an illness may be increasing their risk of heart disease by unnecessarily fretting over their health, research suggests.

A study of more than 7,000 people over 12 years found that those with health anxiety at the start of the study were about 70% more likely to develop heart disease than those without that state of mind. Additionally, the researchers found that the higher the reported anxiety, the higher the risk of heart disease.

Anxiety is a known risk factor for heart disease but the Norwegian authors of the paper believe it is the first to look specifically at health anxiety, which is characterised by a persistent preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious illness and seeking medical help, despite the absence of any physical disease.

Read more The findings, published in BMJ Open on Thursday, suggest that far from health anxiety protecting people from heart disease through increased monitoring and frequency of checkups, it may have the opposite effect.

The lead author, Dr Line Iden Berge, from the division of psychiatry at Sandviken University hospital in Bergen, Norway, said: “We hypothesised that people with health anxiety would have reduced risk because they would take better care of themselves.

“The results suggest it’s better, instead of worrying about what’s going on with your body and running to the doctor for any physical health problem, to seek a proper diagnosis and help for the anxiety disorder.”

The study analysed 7,052 participants in the long-term collaborative research project Norwegian Hordaland health study, all of whom were born between 1953 and 1957.

They filled in questionnaires about their health, lifestyle and educational attainment and had a physical checkup between 1997 and 1999.

Read more In all, 234 (3.3%) of the entire sample had an ischaemic event – a heart attack or bout of acute angina – during the monitoring period. But the proportion of those succumbing to heart disease was twice as high (just over 6%) among those who displayed health anxiety compared with those who did not (3%).

After taking account of other potentially influential factors, those with health anxiety at the start of the study were found to be 73% more likely to develop heart disease than those who did not have anxiety at the outset.

As it was an observational study, no firm conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect. Limitations include the frequent co-existence of health anxiety with other mental health issues, making it hard to differentiate, and the fact that the health anxiety index relies on self-reported symptoms and does not discern between imagined illness and more legitimate reasons for concern.

Emily Reeve, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “It’s natural for people to worry if they feel they might be unwell. But anxiety and stress can trigger unhealthy habits, such as smoking or eating badly, which put you at greater risk of heart disease.

“While we don’t know if the worried well are directly putting themselves at risk of a heart attack, it’s clear that reducing unnecessary anxiety can have health benefits. If you are experiencing health anxiety, speak to your doctor.”

Levels of health anxiety were assessed using a validated scale and the top 10% of the sample – 710 people – were considered to have health anxiety.

The heart health of all the participants was tracked up to the end of 2009. Anyone who received treatment for, or whose death was linked to, coronary artery disease occurring within a year of entering the study, was excluded on the grounds that they might already have been ill.
