one of holmes and watson's love languages is lighting each other's cigarettes. our victorian husbands will use any excuse to touch each other's hands inside or outside 221b 😌
"'l'homme c'est rien. l'oeuvre c'est tout" translated to english is "the man is nothing. the work is everything." this is so true for holmes in many aspects of his life, but there is and always will be one man who is everything to him

221B Baker Street Christmas!
I'm making my house a Murder Mystery Christmas. My newest acquisition is a Department 56 Literary Classics model of Sherlock Holmes' house, with Sherlock and Watson!
It's all set for the season with garland and wreath, a table full of tiny British Xmas foods, a Christmas tree, and three annoying carolers. Miss Marple, Father Brown, and Hercule Poirot watch over them like Guardian Angels.
Dr. Moriarty left them a plum pudding. I don't think they'll eat it.
A better look at the two.

Granada Holmes/Watson Period comfort hc's
warnings: mentions of blood, drugs, angst
a/n: i've been watching Sherlock Holmes 1984 and this idea popped into my head for those who need it. It'll probably flop but who cares! Not my gifs, not proofread, sorry for any typos. Enjoy!!!!
Sherlock Holmes
he seems a bit self-centered but he's a sweetheart when he wants to be
he doesn't pick up on it at all, he's busy solving a case
if you seem to be embarrassed to let him know just force him to realize
he heard you say the word and he snapped, his eyes got wide, and his feet fly above the floor
he runs out the door, don't worry he'll be back
he comes back with his favorite ugly blanket, it's a privilege, that's his favorite blanket
he lets you lay down; he doesn't say a word and he let's you rest
he keeps his distance, and you feel quite weird
he won't say a word and he keeps clear of you
its when you begin to cry over your horrific cramps, he looks over to you immediately and rushes towards you
he holds you and rocks you back and forth, he hushes you in your ear
he still says nothing but the way he's holding you is just enough
he picks up on it for the week and sees the mood swings, he knows when you're in pain bc's of that face you make
he cheers you up by making you hot tea, he sleeps next to you when you need someone to cry to and talk to
he understands the bit he needs to, and he understands sometimes the pain can be brutal
he's never squeamish if you have an accident he knows you have no control and it gets out of hand, but he never snaps at you
he always lends you his ugly blanket and lends you a warm bottle for your stomach
mood swings aren't a bother for him, if you get an attitude its nothing! he gets its not you and he lets you rant
sometimes when your craving things he gets you those things, ice cream, chocolate? hes got it
if you insist on joining a case with him, he watches you every step of the way
he doesn't want you to be in a place where you can't help yourself
he'll carry you to bed if needed, or if you just ask
he spoons you like non other
he's overprotective of you
he loves you dearly and he never wants to see you hurt, uncomfortable, nor sad...
John Watson
he is such a love bug
he doesn't pick up on it immediately, like Holmes he's too busy, busy reading the morning paper
he noticed you've been different and asks what's wrong, of course you make up an excuse
he picks up on it when he sees you in pain, and a bit moody
he doesn't say word, seeing as you made up a lie to hide it
he knows it's embarrassing, but he wants you to have help when you need it
he's a doctor and he let's you know you can ask for help anytime with anything, even if it's a little thing, including this
he lets you rest until you think you're well enough to go out
he brings you medication for the pain and a warm blanket
he makes you tea when you get bad cramps
he understands your cravings, like ice cream, chocolate, and salt but he strictly tells you no salt! he says it'll make your cramps worse, and you both don't want that
though he gets you some ice cream to take your mind off of the pain
he makes you a warm bath
he picks up on your mood swings and understands it can get frustrating for you
speaking of frustration, he lets you rant when you need to, let out the anger
he makes sure you're well every morning, well enough to get up and get cleaned up, if not he'd help you
he's not squeamish of course, he makes no deal if you have an accident here and there, he's more worried about you
he lets you lean on him if you need to go out in public, he lets you hold his hand
he understands if you need to be in a quiet place he'd put you in his room, let you lay down in the dark
if you can't sleep, he'd sit in the chair next to your bed and read to you
he spoons you if it gets really bad and he stays with you as long as you need
he's protective of you and he won't hesitate to get into a fight with anyone who makes you feel bad about your period
he loves you so and he wants to help you in any way he can...

『Sherlock Holmes』

"But Hawk why do you watch every single adaptation of Sherlock Holmes?" It's little things like this. The small quirks that the actors give him, or that authors write him with. Its the small hand movements and the leaps over the couch that Jeremy Brett does, the small 'I know something you don't' smiles that Basil Rathbone does. The eccentricities of Elementary Holmes vs the down-to-earth Peter Cushing. Whether I like the adaptation or not, this is always worth it.
Holmes's habit of touching his ear when he laughs

Sherlock Fic Recs: Christmas Edition {2023}
❄️ Gather ~ ☃️ ☃️ ☃️ ~ 'round and 🎉 make 🎷merry🍹, all ye fic-loving fandom elves -- 'tis the season to shine a spotlight🕯️on Sherlockian Christmas fics!!! Here are some of my favorites -- I tried to pick ones that I haven't seen mentioned in recent lists that have been in my tumblr stream. Whether they're new to you, or just a reminder to re-visit faves, enjoy!!! ❄️ [In order of the year they were published.] ........................................................... 1. I'm Not His Date [2014] by objetpetita [ 17,029 words / T ] :: It all starts in a Boston coffee shop, where English professor Sherlock Holmes upends a visiting John Watson in a clever and fun "meet cute" (or "meet irritating-pompous-insufferable") in a whirlwind of Sherlockian proportions, and we're off to the races. There is a snowfight on the Common, Death Driving Miss Daisy: Lacan and Popular Culture, a Harry & Clara Christmas Eve wedding, witches, and a very boozy department party. It's as adorable as my favorite Christmas rom-com film, The Holiday. And it starts off with a corker of a first sentence: "It was morning, it was zero bloody degrees, everything around him was unfamiliar and American and cold, and John Watson was right on that inhuman precipice between still drunk and terribly hung over."
2. 5,687 (Approximately) [2015] by prettysailorsoldier [ 6,771 words / T ] :: Just a few years post-uni, Sherlock is enduring the agonies of a long-distance relationship with his boyfriend, who is on deployment in Afghanistan. During those times when John's on leave, the last people Sherlock wants to see are the idiots at the Met, so they've never caught sight of John and think he is a figment of Sherlock's imagination -- especially since he can't get home that Christmas. The set-up is sketched out with delightful fic flair, and the ending is not only sweet, but satisfyingly punitive [ c/o a very bamf John ]. The text messaging is some of my favorite writing in the Sherlock fandom -- their relationship in all of its multi-dimensionality comes through beautifully.
3. The 12 Truths of Christmas [2016] by @breath4soul [ 3,321 words / T ] :: This is a fic that has at its core the surfacing of unspoken emotional attraction betweenJohn and Sherlock via a very fun concept: “In place of some appalling or imbecilic gift inflicted upon me in the name of tradition on Christmas day, I propose that you provide me with one previously unknown fact about you for each day leading up to Christmas. 12 in total, John.” #9 has all the feels, and is a tour de force -- every time I re-read it it makes me break out in a smile, even though I know what's coming. Sherlock breaks out somewhat more: "Sherlock feels a flood of heat in several places at once. He stands up quickly and walks to his violin. He plays wild, erratic snaps of quick-paced music." The author has a whimsical and entirely understandable note to add: "You may fall in love with John reading this - I did." 4. The Romance Was There [2017] by @apliddell [ 4,011 words / G ] :: The author deserves an award for this being one of the best uses of Harry Watson in a fic, and of HW by Sherlock in a fic :-) 221B has never been cozier, Sherlock has never been more winsome, and John is a species type model of John in all of his clueless Johnness. The narrative dances along and sparkles and shines as seduction evolves, and Sherlock's rogueish charm is on full display. There's a poignant and endearing confessional letter, plus there's a Sherlock/Jeremy Brett reference that is absolute perfection in serving its role in helping the narrative quickstep the night away. 5. The Man in Aisle Ten [2020] by @blogstandbygo [ 1395 words / G ] :: Sherlock has several mysteries to unravel in the midst of Harrod's on Christmas Eve: what is the perfect gift for John? why is he having so much trouble identifying the perfect gift for John? and, incidentally, along the way to solving those, a local one. Luckily, Sherlock has Moira, master department store sleuth, to lead him to the solution. This fic is a small, perfect gift -- rather like the story's denouement --and is as witty as all of SBG's fics are. This is a veritable Peppermint Schnapps Hot Chocolate of a fic, warm, rich, sweet, delicious, tingly, and you'll find you reach the last bit much too fast, immediately requiring a refill. [ And there's a splendid podfic by @podfixx ! ]
..........................
*fic repost recruits, perhaps??? ❤️ @totallysilvergirl, @7-percent, @discordantwords, @helloliriels, @elwinglyre, @mydogwatson
#bbc sherlock#sherlock fic rec#johnlock#sherlock fic#reposting :-) helps the love go 'round xoxoxo#christmas#objetpetita#prettysailorsoldier#breath4soul#apliddell#standbygo

The Sherlock Holmes museum!
i went to the Sherlock Holmes museum (at the actual 221B Baker Street) today and just had to give some of my thoughts, opinions, and nitpicks (spoiler alert: it was awesome).
I noticed that the jack-knife was lying on the mantel, rather than pierced in it, and that the chemistry table was free of acid stains. but because all the objects inside are genuine Victorian articles, I assume it's because staff didn't want to damage them.
There are exactly seventeen steps from the ground floor to the first!!!! I counted myself as I stepped up, and I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the guide or by staff talks, since that's some really cool attention to detail ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway, the recreation of the sitting room ATE. REAL-LIVE STRADIVARIUS?? OKAY?? Watson's writing desk was cool, V.R. in the wall, and accurate collection of Holmes's pipes (NOT the calabash one)
I loved all the artefacts from the cases upstairs, such as Holmes's Legion of Honour, as well as a few letters sent from him to Watson.
Edit: they also included the collection of framed images of serial killers on Holmes's wall, mentioned in DYIN.
Outside is also a blue plaque (in case you don't know, London has famous blue plaques at the addresses of historical figures) for Holmes. And he is the only fictional character to have one!! 🔛🔝
Anyway throughout my visit i was trying not to get kicked out for giggling. i wanted a teddy bear but it was £30 !! Fight after I also went to the Arthur Conan Doyle plaque nearby, where he was active in 1891-- more or less the peak of the olmes stories, so it's funny that he lived so close by to the very address he wrote about. (also there was a picture of Jeremy Brett in the gift shop and I found that neat)
Anywayyy hope you liked my first Holmes post!! I will definitely do more when they come to me and also dig up old topics i talked about on discord or whatever

Granada TV Series Review: "The Copper Beeches" (S02, E01)
Season 2 of Granada's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes starts with a gripping, dramatic episode, complete with a creepy "bad guy" (played to great effect by British actor Joss Ackland), a winsome heroine (the late Natasha Richardson playing Violet Hunter), and a bloodthirsty hound (not that hound, mind you). Honestly, re-reading "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches" just now, I felt like the Granada series took a fairly average story and made it into something much more exciting. Overall, they were very faithful to the source material, but they managed to rearrange a few plot points and use a fine cast to elevate the adaptation beyond its original form.
For one thing, Joss Ackland is extremely creepy as Mr. Rucastle. Sure, he's jovial enough most of the time, but Ackland is a talented enough actor to make every line seem sinister. From the very first time we meet him, we feel as if things just aren't quite right with this "generous" employer. Meanwhile, Natasha Richardson as Violet Hunter gave the role the right balance between a young lady who's getting more and more frightened and the kind of ingenuity that obviously wins the great detective's respect.
Jeremy Brett and David Burke are excellent, as usual, and there's a particularly delightful sequence at the opening of the episode where we are treated to one of Holmes's rants about how Watson has injected too much romance into the stories that Holmes thinks should be cold, logical case studies. We also are treated to a classic Holmes line, as the detective and his sidekick take the train to meet up with Miss Hunter: “Data! data! data! I can’t make bricks without clay.” (This line, which happens back at the flat at 221B Baker Street in the story, is moved a bit later in the TV episode, which I think works quite well.)
I should also mention the little detail of the slight change of setting of Mr. Rucastle's daughter's prison: in the original story, it is merely a mysterious, shuttered wing of the Copper Beeches estate. In the adaptation, however, it has been transformed into a mysterious "turret," which I think works a bit better. That's what I enjoyed about this episode: the writers, while staying quite faithful to the original story, made minor tweaks to the plot, which ended up giving the story a lot more drama and forward momentum.
This was really a top-notch episode to begin the second season of the successful series. Before I wrap up the review, I should probably mention the entertaining final scene, in which Watson is clearly reading his most recent write-up of the events at the Copper Beeches, with no little delight at the effect his "romantic" storytelling has on his friend. By this point in the series, one can easily tell how comfortable David Burke and Jeremy Brett were becoming in their own roles, as well as in the camaraderie shared by the two friends. It really was a very fine episode to begin the second season!
