Finally finished this, for anyone wondering about their splashtags, I'll copy the text I added on my wip about it under the cut.

Edit: forget to mention the bg is hastily edited concept art from the Tellius Recollection books. Spoilers for the Tellius games are in, just a warning.

For weapons, every weapon here has the Kraken Royale special in Splatoon 3, and someone agessss ago tagged my first inkling Kurthnaga suggesting he could turn inot the Kraken, and I thought that was fun.

Kurthnaga: He has a roller purely based on the fact my brain thinks he'd use one. Don't ask why it's just vibes I guess.

"Promising Ruler" is a reference to the end of Radiant Dawn, and the number 3108 is a reference to 31/08 or Halloween, because of his Heroes debut. He has the lvl 999 Tableturf badge because I think he'd enjoy playing it, the gold Kraken badge because weapon reasons, the bronze Grizzco badge because I imagine Almedha ropes him in to joining her on shifts sometimes.

Almedha: She has a splatling because I think it looks cool, and does a lot of damage from a far just like a certain dragon laser beam.

"Restless Sister" is because she left Goldoa before the Tellius games and inadvertently helped set events in motion. 2202 is 22/02/07 and is Radiant Dawn's Japanese Release date.

I also think she has some tendency towards violence since in canon she had a child with Ashnard of all people, and I doubt he was ever non violent. So she has Salmon Run badges, the flyfish is because I hate them and anyone with that badge is automatically cool to me.

Ena: She gets the Gal because usually it's pink and so is she, I also think she'd find tricky ways to use the Splash wall it comes with.

"Fortunate Tactician" in this au Rajaion doesn't die(if I make any tragedy it'll be reversible because this is funny squid game au and I like happy endings), and she's still good tactically. 2004 is 20/04/05 and is Path of Radiance's Japanese release date.

She has the Kraken badge like Kurth because of her weapon, X Rank badge because she takes battling as a tactical challenge, and the gold Tableturf badge because I think she'd also enjoy it, but play it less than Kurth.

Rajaion: He gets the charger because I was running out of weapons with the Kraken, so he gets an Elitre because I think they look cool, even if I hate fighting them. Also the spawn in pose is cool as hell.

"Revived King" He gets to live in this au, and not die. With Dheginsea being retired from whatever his role ends up as, Rajaion is technically in charge now. 1004 is 10/04/07 and is Radiant Dawn's Australian release date.

He also gets a matching bg style with Ena.

All his badges reference his luck in not being dead in this AU. The gachapon badge is basically gambling, so luck based, Cuttlefish got revived in Splatoon 3's story, and the wavebreaker is used as a revival device a lot in Salmon Run!

欢乐颂 ode to joy 3 first impressions

the reboot makes me feel old-old but at least we still have the balloons?

yes, we all miss the quintet that were shengmei, andy, xiaoxiao, yingying & guanguan but first, here’s a brief intro before my thoughts on the new tenants of the 22nd floor:

2201 again with the aloof mystery lady with an english name - lucy fang zhiheng

2202 has the three flatmates setup (a jiejie and two ducklings) as before - zhu zhe, nickname jiji; he minhong; and yu chuhui, nickname a'chu

2203 still houses the fuerdai of the bunch - ye zhenzhen

(watched the five fully subbed episodes on viki and as of last night, 18 out of 33 have already aired so halfway mark now)

jiji is as sensible as hotel managers go. she may not leave you with a strong sense of who she is at the start but she's been working the longest among these ladies and her breadwinner energy shows. the smol ones ought to let jiejie enjoy her drama fix before bed in peace.

naïve + nosy is how i'd describe minhong... guess that comes with her being a green writer. initially shown as someone who wants to impart her morals (chided by her supervisor right away for aspiring such) in the magazine column, she's bound to learn from conflicts she'll cause.

a'chu has the signature turbulent family woes. that said, grew up well and is striving to strike balance between escaping poverty and being true to herself – developing engineer patents even though neither her nor her peers get credit while teaching kids ballet on the side.

zhenzhen acted as the welcome wagon to the trio. yes, she's a scientist-to-be (biochemistry field if we're being exact) living one good deed a day. outside the lab's spent bonding with the other ladies of 22nd floor - treating them to expensive ice cream and just chilling around.

she and zhenzhen moved in the same time but rarely do we glimpse the two beauties mingling. by design since lucy's miss i-got-my-hands-full: keeping up her luxury appearances and keeping a semblance of normal when she should probably get therapy. she longs for their warm friendship from afar.

chemistry between the five is still wanting in organic interactions department, which is given. much has changed in the shanghai residential complex since the original series was on. years passed. 22nd floor corridor itself is laid different. our original 22nd floor jiejies may have moved on to hopefully better lives yet women in the workforce continue to struggle, maybe even more so with how reductive society has turned into. this otj reboot feels dated, though. at least, daylight entertainment's approach in these early episodes i have seen. the mansplainer of a narrator is gone, lemme just say that's a relief personally.

but y'know what bugs me? how they've opted to tackle sexual harassment.

raising the discussion via media in itself is fine. such abuse of power imbalance shouldn't be swept under the rug, considering countless women on a daily basis are coerced into silence because of the indifference. too few real-life jiji/a'chu/zhenzhen who believes immediately. but one of the guys in the main cast, lucy's suitor, is very attached to this so-called theme exploration. spoiler alert: he's the son of the company superior who assaulted lucy. gonna spare y'all the grim details but, of course, she alone knows of the connection. left to process such trauma by herself while fending off his dogged pursuits - at the office, at the mma gym and later on, even at her hls apartment. what kind of plot?! from the closing credits, he's not bound to leave anytime soon.

my main worry is the narrative will prove her reluctance wrong, that he's a Good Guy, tied neat bow and all that jazz when that does absolutely NOTHING to address the shitty lot that would have been avoided if he wasn't related to this godforsaken dog bloodedness to begin with. if it's only an afterthought to the writer, i just wanna voice that when you've penned a franchise jumpstarting the trend of female-centric modern set cdramas and then you want to continue that brand today? maybe you should update your sensibilities first.

we embrace women's wrongs in this house, not when women are wronged. 

quips won't make the cut with the audiences that easily anymore.

Jon wears a leather jacket to work. No one is immune.

Jon’s running late.

He doesn’t often run late. Ever since he got the promotion, he’s been working overtime- coming in early, staying late, sometimes not leaving at all. He had a mess on his hands, and its one he intends to fix.

So while it’s been some time since he’s seen Rosie at the front desk, it isn’t enough for her to do a double take. But that she does, her usually stoic face going red and her eyes widening in what looks like shock. That’s a bit dramatic.

“O-Oh!” She’s stuttering. Rosie never stutters. “G-Good morning, Jon. You look- you’re looking very nice today!” 

That can’t be true. He slept through his alarm, something he hasn’t done in ages. He didn’t have time to comb his hair and decided to leave it in the messy bun from yesterday- at least it’s out of his way. He skipped shaving altogether and couldn’t find his usual cardigan, instead resorting to an old, beat up leather jacket from college. It’s seen better days, and it reeks of guilty cigarettes snuck in his most desperate hours. The picture of professionalism he is not.

“Um, okay,” is the only response he can think of giving, scurrying past her desk and down to the basement. He doesn’t have time to parse that interaction out, not when his assistants are probably already gathered round, gossiping about his absence. Sure enough Tim’s sitting on Sasha’s desk, smirking and whispering something as he walks through the door, keeping his head down with a grumbled “Good morning.”

The chatter instantly stops. He hazards a glance to find Tim and Sasha, open-mouthed and staring in what can only be horror or fear. He was never any good at reading people. 

“Good Lord,” Tim whispers, borrowing a phrase from Jon’s book. It sounds odd coming from his mouth, and even stranger in that soft tone. Tim’s deafening on a good day, and Jon’s never seen his golden skin turn quite so red. 

“Good morning, Jon,” Sasha’s smirking, her voice turning velvety and smooth. He’s heard her use that tone in bars when she wants another round for the table. Never in the Archives. And never once has it been aimed at him. Jon bristles.

“What is going on?” he asks impatiently, running a hand through messy hair. He could swear Tim gulps. “Do I have something on my-”

He’s interrupted by a loud, high-pitched squeal, followed by the shattering sound of two mugs full of hot tea hitting the tile. He jumps back to avoid the mess, scowling at the man in front of him. Martin looks like he’s having a coronary; Jon wasn’t aware faces could turn that red. And he, too, is staring. 

“I’m late, I don’t have time for this,” he says, side-stepping the spreading puddle and throwing a scowl at Martin’s gaping face. “Clean this up.” He walks away to sputtered apologies and a snicker from Sasha. What’s gotten into them today?

He shuts the door with a decisive click, should anyone think of bothering him.

And not an hour later, someone does.

He answers Martin’s tentative knock with a curt “Come in.” Martin’s looking at his feet as he shuffles in with a cup of tea, his face only slightly less red. He stands as far away as possible when he deposits it on his desk, refusing to meet Jon’s eyes and likely not seeing his nod of thanks. But instead of leaving, he just stands there.

“Do you need something?” Martin jumps at his voice, raising his eyes minutely before lowering them again. What in the world…?

“Y-Your jacket.” He flushes again and Jon’s starting to think he should really see a doctor about that. “You’re still wearing it.”

He is. He hadn’t given it much thought; it’s cold down in the Archives, and sometimes he’ll go all day with a jacket or cardigan over his shoulders. Still, Martin’s right- it doesn’t look very professional. He starts to shrug out of it when Martin throws his hands out in front of him, like Jon’s about to cut the wrong wire on a bomb.

“N-No!” His voice comes out high and strangled. It’s very irritating. “Don’t!”

“What on earth is going on with you-”

“It’s just- you shouldn’t! Not if you’re cold.” Martin gives him a weak smile that Jon doesn’t return. “Wouldn’t want you to get s-sick or something!” 

Jon stares. “Please leave.”

“O-Okay.” Martin backs out of the room. Jon keeps the jacket on.

It is cold.

Thirty minutes later, Sasha comes in with a file he doesn’t need. She lingers with some inane chatter which is very much unlike her, and her phone’s positioned awkwardly in front of her. If Jon didn’t know any better, he’d think she was taking a photo.

The last straw comes when Tim leans in the doorway, a leer on his face. That always means trouble.

“Come to drop off an unnecessary document?” he snarks, slamming a book closed. He’s tired of this game they’re playing. “Maybe finish whatever strange prank you’ve got planned? You know I don’t have time for-”

“Boss.” Tim’s face goes serious, an alarming sign for him. “I have to tell you something. And I promise I’m not making fun of you or anything. I know where your mind goes.”

Jon rolls his eyes at the dramatics. “If you insist-”

“Jon.” Tim comes closer and Jon subconsciously shifts back in his chair. “Objectively, this is the hottest you’ve ever looked.”

What?

Tim raises a finger. “Don’t give me that. I mean, did you look in the mirror today?”

Well, that’s a bit uncalled for. Jon knows he looks a bit scruffy, but this teasing has got to stop. He’s starting to feel a bit insulted. “Tim-”

“You look good. You look dangerous.”

“That’s not a compliment-!”

“Like you ride a motorcycle,” Tim continues, inching closer. His eyes are staring intently into Jon’s, but it seems like he’s lost in his own little world. “Or maybe you’re in a gang, or an underground syndicate. You’ve got a rough past but really, a heart of gold.” Perhaps Tim’s drunk. Or on drugs. He could be on drugs. It’s the only thing that would explain whatever the hell...this is.

“I meet you at a bar,” Tim’s sat down now, right in front of Jon’s desk. Instead of throwing his legs over the side of the chair he leans forward on his knees, still with that disconcerting eye contact. “You’ve stepped out for a smoke.” Oh God, can he smell it? “I’ve had a few too many. You say ‘Got a light?’ in a dark, husky voice.”

“Husky?”

“I nod, flicking my lighter on and raising the flame to your cigarette. You look me directly in the eyes as you inhale-” At this Tim does his own little breathy intake, a finger to his lips as if he’s putting on a one-man show. And Jon- well, Jon’s not immune.

Tim sighs, leaning back in his seat and letting his hands fall back into his lap. “And the rest? Is history.” He takes a moment to recover, blinking slowly. Jon stares.

“What I mean to say is-” Suddenly Tim’s back again, as if the previous minute had never happened. “-do you want to get a drink later?”

What the fuck?

Jon opens his mouth but then pauses, considers. It’s been a week. He’s tired, at the end of his rope. And maybe-

Maybe he misses Tim. Just a little. They did used to have fun, sometimes. Before all of this. Back when they were friends.

“Okay.”

Tim blinks. “What?”

“I’ll come,” Jon agrees, though the rational part of him wants to take it back. But Tim’s in front of him-ridiculous, charming, idiotic Tim- and how can he resist? “But I don’t smoke anymore, so I’m afraid I can’t quite live up to your fantasies.” Tim barks out a laugh and Jon finds himself smiling back, his face growing warm. 

Perhaps he should wear this thing more often.

The thing about Adrien's forgiveness is that it's not just an aspect of his kindness but also a result of the emotional trauma inflicted on him by Gabriel.

Adrien is so afraid of losing people and so used to having his boundaries trampled that he doesn't know what they are anymore. Boundaries are for other people

(That's why I side eye arguments that say Adrien is okay with something because he let it happen. Adrien doesn't even know what his boundaries are. And tolerates things that really aren't okay on a daily basis. Not the most solid of evidence.)

So, yes. I want Chat Noir to be angry at Ladybug. I want the validity of said anger acknowledged not just by the characters but by the narrative. And I don't want the Ladynoir fallout resolved due to magical nonsense.

Because it will show Adrien that he is allowed to feel angry and upset at people he cares about without worrying about losing them. And that he's allowed to have his own boundaries respected.

... Just thinking about this now but allowing himself to be angry at Ladybug before the reconciliation could be used as a narrative stepping stone for the inevitable confrontation with his father. Where Adrien recognizes that he needs to cut some people out of his life for his own well-being. Even if they're a blood relative.

I don't know about anyone else but that's what I mean when I say: I want Chat Noir to be angry at Ladybug.

Adrien is Not "the Male Character"

Which is to say: Adrien is not the Generic Male Protagonist.

Protagonists have been used as embodiments of their respective genders for... a long time. The Generic Male Protagonist supposedly representing all men the same way the Generic Female Love Interest supposedly represented all women. This is both by design and baseless in reality.

Yet, these representations persist in our collective understanding of media. A male character represents all males; a woman all women. Despite the fact that not everyone shares the same experience. Especially not with such broad generalizations. My experience of being male is not the same as that of someone else.

Adrien is not merely "a male character" that can be seen as symbolic of all Men. He is not this projection of masculinity, toxic or otherwise, that the fandom puts on him. Adrien's character and personality show the opposite even; a boy with "traditionally feminine" qualities.

Adrien is a part of a very specific subset of men: male victims.

From that lens then, I suppose it should be less surprising that the fandom treats him the same way our society treats male victims. Victim blaming him for the abuse he suffers, placing the onus on him to "grow a backbone" essentially just another way of saying "man up". His harrassment by female characters ignored because he is male and they are not. And, in a disturbing echo of false feminist rhetoric, his harassers are idolized for being "strong women" standing up to "men".

Reducing any character down to one singular aspect of themselves is something we must grow out of. Adrien in particular is not just "the male character" because being a boy is not his most defining characteristic. No matter how hard the fandom tries to make it so. Such a view is reductive, inaccurate and, potentially, dangerous to one's worldview.

Okay, so Dearest Family gives a lot of backing to the idea that the inequality between Plagg and Tikki, and by extension their holders, is an artificial situation established by the Order of the Guardians.

As Yin and Yang they keep each other balanced. But because of the notion humans have that Destruction is inherently more dangerous than Creation (something the episode shows is not true at all) they give Tikki more freedom while restricting Plagg's. (Which we can infer from Su Han's reaction to hearing Plagg is free)

Inevitably making things worse.

Canon has implied that Plagg's aloofness is a defence mechanism stemming from the way the Guardians, and possibly his past holders, treated him. Like a monster that needed a tight leash.

Tikki isn't free from this either. As she suppresses her desires and less ideal qualities in order to appear more in control. Therefore not needing her leash to be quite as tight as Plagg's.

The Guardians doing the equivalent of shooting themselves in the foot. While the kwamis are arguably more controllable, Tikki is a volcano waiting to explode. And Plagg is as unhelpful as he can get away with. Even encouraging his holder to sit out fights in the early days.

This is especially evident by the way Canon shows us a better way of keeping the kwamis unlimited power under control.

Plagg is the only one shown using his power without some disaster following. And it wasn't when he was helping Ladybug. It was when he was rescuing Adrien.

Adrien has slowly and invariably snuck his way past Plagg's defenses. He is, ironically, the only one Plagg listens too.

In the same vein, it's only after Marinette reassures Tikki that she won't abandon her due to her flaws that Tikki starts getting a handle on her hunger.

Because if kwamis can affect their holders like Tikki did then it stands to reason that the opposite is true as well. The Miraculous are a joint venture between kwami and holder whose powers are limited by the imagination of the wielder. Why wouldn't strengthening that bond help the kwamis use their own power safely?

The Guardians' treatment of Plagg and Tikki also extends to their holders. If not by doctrine then by practice.

For all his talk about not following the old traditions Master Fu certainly echoed Su Han's thoughts on the Black Cat in his actions.

The summary for Ephemeral implying that Chat Noir's identity needs to be known, not for practical considerations such as coordination, but so he can be controlled, i.e. manipulated. A lack of trust and paranoia Fu also showed during his time as Guardian.

In order to move forward the Black Cat has to be acknowledged as the Ladybug's equal. Not only in word and thought but also in action.

Something no character has yet done.

Why Adrien Agreste is a Great Hero

This has been done many times before but now it's my turn... Again.

Chat Noir always prioritizes the civilians' safety. In Origins Chat Noir saves Alya twice despite losing his baton in the process. In Anansi he makes sure everyone is off the ferris wheel before going after the supervillain. Every time he protects Marinette when she's an akuma's target.

Adrien acts like a hero even without his powers. After being hit by Reflekta he rallies the students to protect Ladybug. During Oblivio he distracts the supervillain long enough for Ladybug to evade their attack. He tackles Marinette to safety in Riposte and Heroes Day.

He respects Ladybug's privacy. Chat Noir has had many opportunities to learn Ladybug's secret identity. Particularly in Lady Wifi and Kwami Hunter. Both times he has respected the boundaries she placed.

Adrien's empathy. Adrien is empathetic to everyone. Being simultaneously his greatest strength and greatest weakness. He will see you as a person first and foremost, not as your flaws.

Screw the Rules I'm Doing What's Right! Related to number four Adrien is far more likely to bend the rules for someone else than he is for himself. He embodies doing the most good for the most people. Putting it another way: Adrien is Neutral Good.

Chat Noir doesn't follow blindly. Despite the at times excessive trust he places in Ladybug, she earned that trust. The Guardians did not. And Chat Noir won't hesitate to question authority. In Syren he questioned the then Guardian Fu's rules of secrecy which had and still do drive a wedge between Ladybug and his teamwork. In Furious Fu he didn't hesitate to denounce the Grand Master.

Chat Noir is good at compartmentalizing. Even when upset Chat Noir quickly puts it behind him in order to defeat the akuma victim. As shown in Glaciator and Frozer. Also in Simon Says and the Collector. And on less emotionally stringent occasions like Gamer 2.0.

Teamwork. Or perhaps faith in Ladybug. Chat Noir trusts her completely. He has never so much as insinuated that she could not beat an opponent.

Emotional Support. Related to number eight Chat Noir has constantly been Ladybug's rock when the seas grow too turbulent. Providing a moment of respite before turning her back to their duty. In the rare instance where he speaks to the temporary heroes Chat Noir also provided support for Rena Rouge when she needed it.

Chat Noir takes his duty seriously. When observing his carefree attitude one could be forgiven for mistaking Chat Noir's attempts to lighten the mood/keep his spirits up for a lack of care. (Not by me though. I won't forgive you... Adrien might.) Chat Noir doesn't diminish the importance of defeating Hawkmoth or of helping the akuma victims. When Ladybug is compromised he takes steps to ensure victory. Such as taking the lead with Miracle Queen and preventing her from revealing her identity in Truth. Even going so far as renouncing his ring when he felt he was no longer worthy of it.

This has been a non-exhaustive list of why Adrien Agreste is, was and will continue to be a great hero.

I haven't seen enough people praising Adrien for how he acted with Juleka and Rose this episode and that needs to be corrected.

Adrien asked Marinette to hang back so he could talk one on one with her and knelt down to be at her level. He asked what she needed, if she wanted someone to talk to he would listen. And he did. Adrien waited to hear what she said before doing anything.

Then with Rose he was the only character that wasn't shown in the class's overreaction montage. Besides greeting Rose at the steps he doesn't have any lines until later.

I love Adrien showing how empathetic he is with everyone.
