Here Are 20 Headlines Comparing Meghan Markle To Kate Middleton That Might Show Why She And Prince Harry Are Cutting Off Royal Reporters
Over the years, Meghan has been shamed for the same things for which her sister-in-law, Kate, has been praised.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (aka Prince Harry and Meghan Markle) didn't just shockingly "step back" as senior members of the royal family this week — they gave the UK media a big "fuck-you" for years of what they said was biased and unfair coverage.
The couple's new website on breaking up with years of royal protocol laid out — among a lot of other things — their media strategy, stating that they will no longer participate in the traditional royal press system that grants exclusive access to a select group of UK outlets.
Britain’s royal correspondents, they said, are seen as reliable sources of information. "This misconception propels coverage that is often carried by other outlets around the world, amplifying frequent misreporting," they wrote. Removing themselves from "royal rota" coverage has sparked an outcry among UK media and drew a protest from the National Union of Journalists.
This isn't a new complaint from the royal couple — they just took an unprecedented step to do something about it. Harry and Meghan have said publicly that they believe they have been treated unfairly by the UK press since the moment news broke of their relationship — that they are bullied, that there are racist undertones to coverage of them, and that they have been held to a different standard than Harry's brother and sister-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (aka Prince William and Kate Middleton).
The UK media outlets that currently make up the royal rota are the Daily Express, the Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror, the Evening Standard, the Telegraph, the Times, and the Sun.
Here is a look at 20 stories from these outlets that appear to show a double standard between press coverage of Meghan and Kate. BuzzFeed News has reached out to all of the outlets featured below for comment.
Kate: "Bumping along nicely! The Duchess was seen placing a protective hand on her tummy as she exited the event." Daily Mail: March 22, 2018
Meghan: "Personally, I find the cradling a bit like those signs in the back of cars: Baby on Board. Virtue signaling, as though the rest of us barren harridans deserve to burn alive in our cars." Daily Mail: Jan. 26, 2019
Kate and William: "Prince William was given one of the green fruit – wrapped up in a bow – by a little boy who's mother is suffering during her pregnancy too... 'He said he'd take it to [Kate] and see what happens – and said good luck for [the boy's] mummy.'" Express: Sept. 14, 2017
Meghan: "The pregnant Duchess of Sussex and so-called 'avocado on toast whisperer' is wolfing down a fruit linked to water shortages, illegal deforestation and all round general environmental devastation." Express: Jan. 23, 2019
Kate: "Royal sources said yesterday that the Queen understood and endorsed William and Kate’s decision not to spend Christmas Day with her. One said: ‘Her Majesty understands that it is a dilemma that many young couples face and acknowledges how close Catherine’s relationship is with her family." Daily Mail: Dec. 16, 2016
Meghan: "The fact is the Queen expects to have the family around her for the festive season... to the Queen, for whom the tradition of the family gathering is a key date in her calendar, Harry and Meghan’s absence will be a matter of great sadness. It will also be a source of frustration." Daily Mail: Nov. 13, 2019
Kate and William: "Creating their own companies will allow William and Kate to bring out, should they ever chose to, myriad items of officially-endorsed merchandise from tea towels to coffee cups... Kensington Palace officials said they were doing the ‘sensible thing’ in protecting the couple’s rights." Daily Mail: Jan. 17, 2014
Meghan and Harry: "The Sussexes want to stamp their name on dozens of products including T-shirts, hoodies, journals and gloves for their newly-created foundation Sussex Royal... Experts said Harry and Meghan were actively preparing to quit the Royal Family months ago by filing trade mark applications to commercially protect their brand." Daily Mail: Jan. 9, 2020
Kate and William: "Prince William yesterday backed brother Harry’s brave admission of his mental anguish — and blasted the monarchy’s 'stiff upper lip' tradition... William said: 'There may be a time and a place for the ‘stiff upper lip’ but not at the expense of your health... '
"'Catherine and I are clear we want both George and Charlotte to grow up feeling able to talk about their emotions and feelings. Over the past year we have visited a number of schools together where we have been amazed listening to children talk about some quite difficult subjects in a clear and emotionally articulate way, something most adults would struggle with. Seeing this has really given me hope things are changing and there is a generation coming up who find it normal to talk openly about emotions.'” Sun: April 19, 2017
Meghan and Harry: "Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have bucked royal tradition once again with their latest TV interview — in which they claimed they were 'existing, not living.' The couple ditched the stiff upper lip of previous Royal Family generations and flew the flag for 'Generation Therapy' as they revealed their emotions to the world - but were they right to do so?
"What you make of 'fragile' Prince Harry and Meghan's comments may depend on your generation. Sun parents and kids reveal what they think of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex airing their emotions in public - and whether they have the right to moan in such positions of privilege..." Sun: Oct. 23, 2019
Kate: "It was reported that new Duchess of Cambridge requested her favorite scented candles and toiletries from luxury fragrance brand Jo Malone be delivered to scent the Abbey. A selection of candles, handwashes and lotions was requested, specifically in citrus spring scents including Orange Blossom, Grapefruit and the ever-popular Lime, Basil & Mandarin." Daily Mail: May 4, 2011
Meghan: "'Meghan wanted staff to go around with these atomizers, like spritzer guns, and spray the chapel with scent before anyone arrived. Royal Household staff stepped in and told her office politely, but firmly, that this was the queen's chapel and it simply wasn't appropriate. I don't believe they said no because they thought it could affect the chapel in any way. It was simply the principle of the thing. This is a place that has held royal weddings, funerals and even contains the royal vault. I don't believe a request of that nature had been made before.'" Daily Mail: Nov. 30, 2018
Kate: "As far as bridal bouquets go there was nothing particularly regal about Kate Middleton’s modest arrangement of simple, seasonal flowers. Like the bride herself the bouquet was effortlessly elegant and understated.
"Yet behind that modest posy lay a secret story. Kate, the commoner-turned-duchess, had painstakingly selected blooms with real meaning. She is evidently well-versed in the language of flowers, a little-known romantic relic from the 19th century.
"Hence the use of lilac in her bouquet, which signifies the first emotions of love, the lily of the valley meaning a return of happiness, hyacinth standing for constancy, myrtle meaning love and the ivy, which represents fidelity. Then of course there was the suitably named Sweet William, which is shorthand for gallantry." Express: Aug. 29, 2011
Meghan: "[Meghan Markle] was holding a wedding bouquet which flowers were replicated in Princess Charlotte and the other bridesmaids’ flower crowns. Express.co.uk can now reveal the children’ crowns were made of flowers that can be deadly, especially for children. Meghan’s bouquet was made of forget-me-nots as well as sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine, and astrantia...
"Lily of the valley is a highly poisonous woodland flowering plant and ingestion could be deadly... As Meghan’s bridesmaids were so young, having this flower on their heads could be considered a dangerous decision. Other brides have also used this flowers including Kate Middleton, Princess Eugenie and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall." Express: Oct. 13, 2019
Kate and William: "The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh missed the small family affair. The decision is understood not to have been taken on health grounds, and to have been mutually agreed by the Queen and the Cambridges some time ago. The Queen, 92, has a busy week ahead, with high-profile celebrations in central London marking the centenary of the RAF on Tuesday, and a visit by US President Donald Trump in Windsor on Friday." Daily Mail: July 9, 2018
Meghan and Harry: "The situation has surprised some senior staff at Buckingham Palace, who feel that the duke and duchess should have planned the day better. ‘There is huge support for the couple in not wanting to conform to tradition. They are young, they are striking out on a different path from other members of the Royal Family and there is enormous goodwill for them. But they shouldn’t do that without regard for tradition,’ said one. ‘Her Majesty was already scheduled to be in Scotland for her annual Holyrood Week and had a prior engagement at the weekend. There is a feeling amongst some that they should have been more accommodating about the date.’" Daily Mail: July 4, 2019
Kate: "It is a fashion conundrum not many of us will ever face, but what exactly does one wear for tea with the Queen? The Duchess of Cambridge met this challenge head on yesterday by co-ordinating her outfit with the Queen’s powder blue ensemble... The Queen, on her first official event to mark her Diamond Jubilee, was dressed in a pastel hat and two-piece coat dress with military-style rows of gold buttons designed by Angela Kelly. Looking relaxed and elegant, her outfit was perfect for what looked like a fun official engagement with the girls." Mirror: Feb. 14, 2013
Meghan: "The Queen's aides had told [Meghan] she would be wearing a green hat as a mark of respect to those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire. The Queen is said to have been 'baffled' when Meghan turned up without a hat as she didn't realize she was supposed to wear one too. A senior aide said: 'I don't think the Duchess fully understood. This was not a request. Those are for others to make, not the Queen.' The Queen's staff are said to have noted the Duchess's mistake or 'lack of deference'" Mirror: Oct. 29, 2018
Kate: "We see a woman in her prime: stylish, confident and positively radiant, nailing outfit after outfit in the style stakes — and it’s a joy to witness... That old uniform of girlish dresses, tan tights and nude heels has been replaced by dazzling super-chic outfits to satisfy even the most exacting fashionista." Daily Mail: June 16, 2019
Meghan: "Proper royalty is about tradition and duty, self-effacing service and loyalty — year after year after year, season after season... That is not to say that a monarchy cannot or must not move with the times — simply that it has to resist the temptation to be buffeted by passing cultural trends. Fashion is the exact opposite. And as fashion’s most famous bible, Vogue exemplifies the transient nature of the beast." Daily Mail: July 29, 2019

King Jerry Ltd
BACKGROUND
King Jerry is an Indian full-service airline, based in Delhi, with its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The carrier commenced operations on 15 June, 2014 with its inaugural flight between Delhi and Kolkata. The airline had carried more than three million passengers by June 2016 and as of Sep 2019, has a 6.2% share of the domestic carriers. The airline serves 60 airports in India (20- International, 40- Domestic) with a fleet of 30 Boeing 737 and 22 Airbus A320 Aircrafts, operated on profitable routes with higher passenger load factors. It operates 560 flights/day.
HISTORY
Initially being a low-cost carrier, King Jerry offered only economy class seating. To keep fares low, it did not provide complimentary meals on any of its flights, though it provided a buy-on board in-flight meal program. No in-flight entertainment was available initially. It offered services, such as a pre-assigned seat, multiple cancellations and priority check-in, to its passengers who are willing to pay a higher fare. In September 2015, the company announced its tie up with SonyLIV on demand video app for providing its fliers with entertainment options at the airport and in flight.
FUTURE PROSPECT
The airline will be introducing its first international destination, Colombo, with flights connecting to Chennai. Company will be introducing operations in total of 5 international destinations with 12 short- haul flights. London will be the airline's first long-haul destination and will be launched after successful operation of short-haul international flight.
The airline will be expanding its fleet with 4 Boeing 787 Dream liner aircraft to operate on international routes.
CORPORATE AFFAIRS
In November 2018, it entered into talks with an Indian airline over a possible merger which ended in a no deal. According to the airline, it is a planned strategy due to the tough aviation environment in India and to focus on maintaining profitability rather than on capturing market share and increasing the destinations and fleet size. But later contradicting its statement in 2019, it bagged the fifth largest carrier in the country with an 7.9% market share following the announcement about expansion. The airline is headquartered in Delhi, India. Shantanu has served as the Managing Director of the airline since its inception.

NEWS AND RUMORS
1. A passenger misbehaved with a female flight attendant. And according to the practice, she conveyed the incident to the cockpit and reported to the chief flight attendant. As the flight had already taken-off, the chief decided this to be the first thing to be looked in as they land and for now, they had the passenger flex-cuffed as directed by other pit members. But when this was reported to King Jerry, the company didn't take any actions against the passenger and instead fired the flight attendant after a heated argument. Owing to this, 5% of the female flight attendants resigned and other employees went on strike because of this irresponsibility on part of the company and not following the air rage rules.
2. One of the competitor airlines, Jet airways, is facing a shutdown. And because of this shutdown, a large pool of talented employees is available to King Jerry .These people are in search of job opportunities and are applying at various vacant positions.
3. King Jerry had a technological redesign and now owns various upgrades. One of the upgrades is replacement of traditional baggage system with latest Baggage Handling Mechanism. It has led to tremendous decrease in the requirement of ground staff. Hence the company is planning to transfer few of the excess employees for the new international routes and fire the rest.
· Post- Installation; 1 employee will be laid off for every 5 employees on International Airports whereas, 3 employees will be laid off for every 10 employees at Domestic Airports. Transferring will lead to 4.5% increase in accommodation cost and 9% increase in training cost.
4. Budget 2020 has proposed a monetary limit on the tax-exempt contribution from the employer to NPS account. According to the proposal, employer's contribution to EPF and NPS exceeding more than Rs 7.5 lakh in a financial year will be taxable in the hands of the employee.

Table 1.2 Types of Trainings
Each training program has a duration of 2-3 weeks in a batch of 15 employees.
*The data is based on various previous surveys and feedback forms.
Table 1.3 Percentage increase in respective training benefits
Note: The participant percentage refers to the number of responses from participants opting for that particular training. For ex, if 25% of the responses from participants opt for flight simulator training then the increase would be 38% for those participants.
Task at hand:
1. Each participant is required to estimate the number of employees to be hired/ fired based on the news and rumors provided, thereon ascertain the total compensation of employees for Oct-Mar. (Reasons for each to be mentioned in the word document) (Refer table 1.1)
2. To strengthen its profile in the overseas market, the company is planning to train its employees. 2 options are to be selected by the company from among the 4 available training options. Determine the cost and update the budget accordingly, maximizing the benefits derived. (Reasons for each to be mentioned in the word document) (Refer table 1.2 and 1.3)
3. Special Hiring decision: There will be a vacancy for a station manager soon. The station manager is the top manager in one of the airline's airport and is responsible for all activities at the airport, from ticketing passengers to handling the fueling and turnaround of an aircraft. The station manager usually supervises one or two ticket desks, two baggage handlers and one or more aircraft servicing people. He/she works from the first flight in the morning until the last flight at night, often a 10-12 hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week, he/she must be good with the public and very passenger oriented. when anything out of ordinary happens. it falls on the station manager to make things right with the passengers. The station with the opening, currently has an all-male crew belonging to majority. The only requirement in the job advertisement is that the application has "related experience in the airline industry". You have passed the list of applicants down to three individuals. whom will you select? (State reasons in word document)
Potential Candidate 1
A middle aged, minority female who was formerly a cabin attendant for an airline that went bankrupt. She received excellent annual evolutions and won award for "Cabin Attendant of the Year". She is bright, eloquent and seems to be highly motivated. She stated that she could learn technical parts of the job quickly (supervision of baggage
handling, fueling, etc.). She is the only applicant with a college degree. One of your staff people stated "If we are going to stay ahead of minority hiring practices, now is the time to start.”
Potential Candidate 2
A middle-aged majority male who was assistant station manager for five years for a large airline who wanted to relocate. He appears to be pleasant and easy going and has good recommendations from his former employer. He could step in and immediately do the job well.
Potential Candidate 3
The young ticket agent at the airport where the opening has occurred. She has been working for the airline for two years and has very good performance evolutions. She worked as a baggage handler a few times when needed but has not done some of the other jobs she would be supervising. The out- going station manager has stated, " I think, in time, she could learn how to be a good station manager. She will make some mistakes, but everybody does. The company should send a strong message to employees that promotion from within is one of our policy.
4. Come up with a separate PPT presentation with strategies that King Jerry airlines can opt for COVID. Divide your strategies into two halves
o -Sustenance and cost cutting strategies during COVID
o -Revival and growth strategies post COVID
5. The top executives of King Jerry Airlines have been publicly been exposed to be harassing airhostesses and female flight-crew in exchange of not firing them or offering promotions. Both the CEO and CMO of the company have had evidence leaked against them for abuse of authority. A case has been filed against them and investigation is being done on King Jerry's hiring ethics. As the PR team of the company, DEFEND your employees and release a statement to regain public trust as well as the trust of female employees.

Defence Purchases and Projects Could Help in Economic Recovery, Industry Says
By David Pugliese
In mid-September Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said the Liberal government was looking to speed up military procurements as a way to jump-start job creation. The plan would be to fast-track parts of the government’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, to help fuel the economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But when Esprit de Corps asked for the names of some of the projects that the Minister would like to see fast-tracked, Sajjan could only reply: “We are committed to our fully funded Defence Policy; Strong, Secure, and Engaged. Procuring the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces the equipment they need to do the important work we ask of them is one of our Government’s top priorities.”
That response was a not a good sign for those interested in a robust Canadian Armed Forces and a strong defence industry capability. Sources tell Esprit de Corps there is no list of projects to be fast-tracked, at least at this point.
In addition, the Sept. 23 Throne Speech, which outlined the Liberal government’s priorities for the future, had not one reference to defence or foreign affairs.
So far, Sajjan is trying to put a positive spin on the current situation for the Canadian Forces and Department of National Defence. He has claimed the Liberals have no intention of cutting back on its defence policy which calls for tens of billions of dollars to be spent on buying new equipment.
“We’re going do a very thorough analysis, just like we did in the past, make a good case about it and then make a decision of where we want to go,” he told the Canadian Press news service Sept. 15. “But absolutely, the SSE funding is secure. We’re continuing on with SSE investments.”
Whether that is true remains to be seen.
Christyn Cianfarani, president of the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries or CADSI, says the country’s defence industry can play an important role in the federal government’s economic recovery plan.
Canada’s defence industry actually fared better than other economic sectors during the pandemic, she told Esprit de Corps. There were no significant layoffs and most firms have been able to continue operations and production. “It actually does tell you that it does function in a crisis situation,” Cianfarani said. “Because it was there so many of the companies were able to pivot their commercial lines of business where they weren’t getting work and to do things that supported the pandemic (response).”
She pointed out that CAE started producing ventilators when its work with the commercial airline industry dwindled because of the pandemic. “The defence side stayed stable,” added Cianfarani.
CADSI also noted that foreign sales, which account for 60 percent of Canadian defence industry revenue, have not yet been adversely affected by the pandemic and the associated global recession.
The association has recommended a series of measure to the federal government that would help the industry and let it contribute to economic recovery. Cianfarani said there are already billions of dollars earmarked for Canadian Armed Forces procurement so the government should use that to create what she termed high-paying defence jobs. According to CADSI some 60,000 jobs are tied to Canada’s defence industrial base.
Among CADSI’s recommendations is to accelerate equipment project approvals, favour Canadian firms and supply chains as much as possible and use National Security Exemptions to buy capabilities that can already be provided by Canadian industry. In addition, the association recommends the federal government aggressively apply industrial regional benefits to all defence procurement projects between $20 million and $100 million, as well as favour Canadian-based cyber firms for associated purchases as the government moves its employees to more remote work.
Cianfarani noted that having Canadians gainfully employed and earning a good pay cheque in a defence and security-related job is better than having workers laid off and collecting employment insurance.
Another potential area of revenue and job creation, according to CADSI, is the $2 billion in defence-related contracts for foreign sales which are backlogged in the government’s approval process. The backlog has been building for at least a year and eliminating this backlog will allow these contracts to proceed.
Whether the federal government follows such advice is not yet clear. The Liberal government’s Throne Speech on Sept. 23 focused on COVID-19 emergency measures to support businesses and health care as well as longer term goals of a national child care strategy and improving education. There was also talk about green initiatives such as planting of trees, modernizing police training and tackling systemic racism.
Interestingly, the Liberals made no mention of its efforts to have Canada play more of a role in overseas operations led by the United Nations or other alliances.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has promised a campaign to create one million jobs, noting that there will be “direct investments in the social sector and infrastructure, immediate training to quickly skill up workers, and incentives for employers to hire and retain workers.” Part of the Liberal government recover plan includes a promise to funnel $10 billion into infrastructure programs.
The funding would come from the Canada Infrastructure Bank and the initiatives are expected to create 60,000 jobs, according to the Liberal government. The initiative will include funding for clean power and connecting approximately 750,000 homes and small businesses to broadband in underserved communities; $2 billion to invest in large-scale building retrofits to increase energy efficiency and help make communities more sustainable; $1.5 billion for agriculture irrigation projects to help the agriculture sector enhance production, strengthen Canada’s food security, and expand export opportunities; and $1.5 billion to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission buses and charging infrastructure.
No funds were earmarked for the aerospace, defence or security sectors.
Although CADSI has made its representations to the federal government, individual defence firms have been relatively quiet in outlining what role, if any, they could play in Canada’s economic recovery. Not so with other industries, which have launched advertising campaigns to push the federal government to direct funding their way.
The defence industry is also facing a challenge from activist groups who are campaigning against tying up federal money in military purchases, particularly the proposed acquisition of new fighter jets. The first protests were launched July 24 one week before the bids were due for the fighter jets. Protesters showed up at the offices of 22 MPs. A second protest was held Oct. 2. Demonstrations were staged outside the officers of 25 MPs including Conservative leader Erin O’Toole, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and others. The aim of the campaign is to redirect funding for military equipment into a national childcare program as well as other programs to assist women.
In the Canadian Forces view, the need for new capabilities and equipment is not going to go away. In fact, such as need will significantly increase, military officers say. On Aug. 11, Brig. Gen. Colin Keiver, director general air and space force development, outlined to industry executives that the Royal Canadian Air Forces has 17 large projects it needs to get underway. Those range from the acquisition of the new fighter jets to replace the CF-18s to the acquisition of space capabilities to improve situational awareness and targeting, the purchase of new command and control and communications systems, the replacement of the air-to-air tankers and the acquisition of a fleet of medium altitude remotely piloted systems. The RCAF’s 17 large projects account for $46.4 billion, according to Keiver. That makes up just less than half of the future funding proposed the Liberal government’s 2017 defence policy paper Strong, Secure, Engaged.
The Royal Canadian Navy’s share of that is also expected to be substantial. As Commodore Chris Robinson, director general naval force development, pointed out Sept. 28 in a CADSI presentation, the Royal Canadian Navy is undertaking an unprecedented peace time naval fleet recapitalization while simultaneously preparing for the expansion of missions in the Arctic ocean. Where this all leaves the Canadian Army in the future – and what its share of the funding pie will be – is an open question.
The Liberals, who could be heading into an election in the coming year, want results that can quickly put Canadians back to work. That most likely means shovel-ready infrastructure projects. With bases and facilities across the country the Department of National Defence could provide the government with some of the projects they want. Sources inside National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa say each of the military services have been scanning their infrastructure needs to see if they can fast-track some of those.
In a December 2019 response to a query from a Conservative MP, the DND presented to Parliament a list of 117 defence procurement projects that are currently delayed. Interestingly, 64 of the projects were for infrastructure at bases and facilities.
Cianfarani noted pushing ahead on infrastructure projects can provide much needed employment for workers and a lifeline to businesses. Much of the base infrastructure is also supported by smaller firms, who do everything from maintenance to plowing snow, she added.
The DND has recently issued news releases on infrastructure projects but that was clearly a public relations strategy to support the Liberal government as some of the contracts have finished or are so far in the future that job creation won’t come for a number of years. For example, on Oct. 13 the DND issued a news release announcing that the construction of an integrated logistics section at CFB Kingston had been completed. But that was done back in June. The $48.5-million project generated about 180 jobs during construction but there was no word if employees were kept on at various companies after the construction was finished.
Sajjan’s reassurances that there won’t be cuts to defence spending might also be short-lived.
With the federal deficit currently estimated to be near $400 billion, the Liberal government has suggested spending will be reduced once the pandemic is over. “Absolutely, once we are through this pandemic, it is going to be extremely important to be fiscally responsible and sustainable,” Trudeau told parliamentarians.
Parliamentary Budget Office Yves Giroux has also warned current spending for emergency relief programs to deal with the pandemic can only go on for so long. If spending isn’t curtailed then taxes will have to be increased, he said. That is something no government looks forward to, particularly if they are facing an election.
There is also the issue of whether Sajjan will stay on as Defence Minister long enough to keep his promise of no major spending cuts. There have been suggestions that a new Defence Minister might be put in place in the coming year.
For now, Treasury Board President Jean-Yves Duclos says spending overall can’t be reduced without harming the economy and pushing Canada towards a depression. He was mainly talking about the various emergency relief programs in place. But the Liberal government has signaled that also means public service jobs (including military personnel) and department spending are fine for now.
How long that continues is an open question.

Who Will Win The Vice Presidential Debate? We’re partnering with Ipsos to poll voters before and after the candidates take the stage. By Laura Bronner, Aaron Bycoffe, Elena Mejía and Julia Wolfe
Illustrations by Anika Orrock, Candidate Portraits by Fabio Buonocore
Tomorrow evening, Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris will meet in the only scheduled vice presidential debate. Normally, vice presidential debates are lower-stakes affairs than presidential debates, but with President Trump contracting the coronavirus, the VP debate has grabbed headlines as the two remaining presidential debates hang in limbo. We’re once again partnering with Ipsos, though, to see how the debate shapes people’s views of the vice presidential contenders — and the presidential ticket as a whole — using Ipsos’s KnowledgePanel to interview the same people before and after the debate.
Most people lean towards a Biden-Harris ticket, but many still think Trump-Pence have a good chance of winning How likely respondents are to vote for each candidate and how likely they think each candidate is to win, on a scale from 0 (no chance) to 10 (absolutely certain) How likely are you to vote for each? 0 10

4.7 0 30 60% 0 30 60% 0 10 No chance Absolutely certain Respondents were also given the option of third-party candidates or ‘someone else.’ Additionally, they could indicate that they will not vote.
Similar to our poll for the first presidential debate, most respondents had strong feelings about the two presidential tickets, saying they were absolutely certain to vote for one or the other. And in line with our polling average, more people said they were likely to vote for Biden than Trump. Overall, 43 percent said they were “absolutely certain” to vote for Biden, while only 31 percent said the same for Trump.
But as was true in the first debate, Biden’s lead in voter intention didn’t translate to greater confidence in his chances of winning. Many respondents, regardless of who they planned to back, thought the race was more of a toss-up: When asked to rate the candidates’ chances of winning on a scale of 0 to 10, they gave Trump a score of 4.6 and Biden a score of 4.7, on average.
Supporters are more certain[a][b] than they are excited How likely and how excited respondents are to vote in the 2020 presidential election, by preferred candidate
Trump How likely are you to vote? Absolutely certain Very likely Not too likely Not likely at all 82% 11 6 1 How excited are you to vote? Very excited Somewhat excited Not too excited Not at all excited 45% 23 20 11
Biden How likely are you to vote? Absolutely certain Very likely Not too likely Not likely at all 86% 7 5 2 How excited are you to vote? Very excited Somewhat excited Not too excited Not at all excited 44% 22 19 15 Respondents were asked to rate how likely they were to vote for each ticket on a scale of 0-10, and their preferred ticket is the one who received the higher score. Respondents who gave both candidates the same score are not included. Respondents who already voted are included in the “absolutely certain” bucket and respondents who gave themselves a 50-50 shot of voting are included in the “not too likely” bucket.
Overall, the vast majority of respondents say they are highly motivated to vote[c][d][e]. And those who know which candidate they’re backing are especially motivated: 86 percent of Biden backers say they are “absolutely certain” to vote and 82 percent of Trump backers. In fact, that includes ten percent of Biden’s supporters who say they have already voted; for Trump’s supporters, that number is five percent. Excitement about voting is also high — almost half of each candidate’s supporters said they were “very excited” to vote and another fifth said they were “somewhat excited.”
The popularity contest How favorably respondents rated each candidate 37% 52% 45% 40% favorable unfavorable favorable unfavorable favorable unfavorable favorable unfavorable We’re also tracking how favorably respondents view Pence and Harris. Pence is not quite as unpopular as Trump — his net favorability (favorable rating minus unfavorable rating) is -14, while Trump’s is -24 in our poll. Harris, meanwhile, is almost as popular as Biden; her net favorability is +4, while Biden’s is +6. But for both vice presidential candidates, there’s a substantial group — around 11 percent in Pence’s case, and 15 percent in Harris’s — who say they have never heard of either candidate or don’t have an opinion about them. That’s, of course, more unknowns than for either of the presidential candidates, so there is a real opportunity for those favorability numbers to shift after the debate.
HarrisPence Very unfavorable Somewhat unfavorable Very favorable Somewhat favorable All the data presented here comes from polling done by Ipsos for FiveThirtyEight, using Ipsos’s KnowledgePanel, a probability-based online panel that is recruited to be representative of the U.S. population. For this study, the same group of respondents is interviewed before and after the debate to track whether and how their answers changed. An initial wave of polling was conducted before the debate began, with a follow-up wave after the debate. The first wave of the poll was conducted from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6 among a general population sample of adults, with 2,994 respondents. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.0 percentage points.
All Wave 1 respondents were weighted according to general population benchmarks from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey March 2019 Supplement. Adults are the respondent base for all charts except where otherwise noted. The respondent pool is subject to some amount of attrition from Wave 1 to Wave 2, which our weights account for.
The second wave of the poll began after the debate ended and collected data from Sept. 29 to Sept. 30 among 1,827 adults who had previously responded to the first wave; it has a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. Of those respondents, 1,337 watched some or all of the debate. All Wave 2 respondents were weighted to the same general population benchmarks as Wave 1.

The Ultimate Revelation Of Check In With Charlie Oppenheim | check in with charlie oppenheim
NEW YORK, June 17, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — CanAm Enterprises (“CanAm”) aggregate key takeaways from IIUSA’s webinar: Conversation with Charlie Oppenheim on June 16th. Oppenheim is the Chief of the Acceptance Control and Reporting Division at U.S. Department of State. During the webinar, he answered questions about EB-5 acceptance acceptance through May 2020. There were several important takeaways from his catechism and acknowledgment session.
Lance Oppenheim – Zimbio – check in with charlie oppenheim | check in with charlie oppenheim
EB-5 Acceptance Numbers in FY2020 and FY 2021Oppenheim estimates that over 4,500 EB-5 acceptance numbers accept been issued appropriately far for FY2020, which is able-bodied abbreviate of the about 10,000 EB-5 visas accessible anniversary budgetary year. With the end of FY2020 a little added than three months away, it is actual acceptable that we will “lose” EB-5 acceptance numbers for FY2020 abundantly due to COVID-related consular closures about the world.
Despite this “loss” of EB-5 visas for FY2020, Oppenheim anticipates that there will additionally be cogent numbers of bare family-sponsored visas in FY2020, which will “spillover” and be added to the 140,000 anniversary visas already allocable to the employment-based acceptance categories for FY2021 .
While Oppenheim did not board an exact appraisal of the cardinal of bare family-sponsored visas for FY2020, he did appraisal that the absolute cardinal of employment-based visas accessible for FY2021 “is acceptable to be able-bodied in excess” of 200,000, apery a minimum net accretion of 60,000 visas for all employment-based alternative categories.
Since the EB-5 acceptance class is statutorily allocated 7.1% of absolute employment-based visas, and assuming, as Oppenheim adumbrated that 200,000 employment-based visas is the “bare minimum” cardinal that will be accessible in FY2021, afresh we can apprehend able-bodied in balance of 14,200 EB-5 visas to be accessible for administration in FY 2021 .
“In the admirable arrangement of things,” Oppenheim indicated, “the accident in EB-5 numbers acclimated [in FY2020] will be added than account by the added [visas] that will be accessible abutting [fiscal year] . . .. Budgetary 2021 should be a actual acceptable year beneath the accepted INA guidelines for acceptance availability for application applicants.”
But how abounding visas are we talking about? Afterwards all, the anniversary absolute for family-based alternative is several times greater than for the employment-based alternative categories. And how abundant of an appulse will it accept on backlogged EB-5 investors?
Charles Oppenheim Discusses Visa Bulletin Movement for .. | check in with charlie oppenheim
Let’s accept conservatively that 14,200 EB-5 visas are accessible in FY2021. Anniversary country gets 7.1% of absolute EB-5 visas, so 1008 visas. Let’s additionally accept that Vietnam and India “max out” their 7.1%, so 1,008 visas for anniversary country, or a absolute of 2,016 visas. Afresh let’s accept the blow of the apple (minus China) gets about 4,200 visas (per Oppenheim’s estimates in Oct. 2019). Finally, in FY2021, there is no account of EB-5 visas for the Chinese Student Protection Act. That leaves about 7,980 EB-5 visas accessible for use by countries that accomplished their per-country absolute in antecedence date order, which mostly should be China.
Moreover, back questioned, Oppenheim accepted that 14,200 EB-5 visas are the “bare minimum” that we can apprehend for FY 2021. Accordingly, it’s actual accessible that 10,000 EB-5 visas will be accessible to China in FY2021 as in the past, and bold the Guangzhou can alpha processing again, this could abate the China excess by several years.
CanAm’s Director of Legal Affairs and In-House Clearing Counsel, Walter Gindin, commented, “It’s accessible to appearance the EB-5 acceptance excess as a consistently affective line, which can, and does, get beneath over time. We accept already apparent added bare family-sponsored visas for FY2019 be allocated to the EB-5 class for FY2020. Currently, Oppenheim estimates that an alike greater cardinal of bare family-based visas for FY2020 will be allocated to employment-based categories for FY2021, authoritative able-bodied over 200,000 employment-based visas accessible abutting budgetary year, including a abundant cardinal for EB-5. This trend, accompanying with added EB-5 beforehand amounts and added factors, will accomplish added visas larboard over to investors from countries such as China with the greatest EB-5 acceptance appeal and appropriately abate acceptance delay times.”
Future Advancements of Antecedence Dates & Implications for ChinaMany accept empiric the contempo trend in the beforehand of antecedence dates. For EB-5, China has avant-garde 8 months back the alpha of FY2020 (Final Activity date of October 22, 2014) until the best accepted Acceptance Bulletin for June 2020 (Final activity date of July 22, 2015). This bit-by-bit beforehand is, in part, due to the actuality that abounding Chinese investors accept not confused avant-garde with their acceptance applications awaiting at the NVC.
With the achievability of EB-5 visas activity bare in FY 2020, Oppenheim was asked whether he would added beforehand antecedence dates in adjustment to aggrandize acceptance usage, abnormally in currently retrogressed countries, bold consular offices accessible up.
Oppenheim responded that he “prefers not to accomplish accelerated advances alone to accept austere retrogressions afterwards the fact,” and accepted that he will not aloof beforehand antecedence dates for the account of movement because he does not appetite to actualize a bearings area final activity dates may accept been avant-garde at an unsustainable pace, which would after crave abeyant retrogressions of those dates, and afresh bodies could be bent up area any time-sensitive affidavit is expired.
Charles Oppenheim, Consultant – CILIPS – check in with charlie oppenheim | check in with charlie oppenheim
Oppenheim said that he expects that the antecedence dates for China and Vietnam will abide to beforehand through the end of FY2020 and prefers to accomplish “measured movements” in their antecedence dates based on what is reasonable to appear in the advancing months.
Gindin saw acumen to be optimistic in Oppenheim’s approach: “The antecedence date for China EB-5 has avant-garde 8 months back the alpha of budgetary year 2020. We accept that abounding Chinese investors are afraid about the EB-5 acceptance delay times, but as Charlie Oppenheim adumbrated in his comments during IISUA’s webinar, there is bulk in demography a abstinent access and not authoritative accelerated advancements to the antecedence date in the concise alone to dissipate the arrangement and actualize added corruption in the future. We are absolutely encouraged that Oppenheim expects the antecedence date for China EB-5 to abide to beforehand through the butt of this budgetary year.”
Possible “Current” Antecedence Dates for All CountriesAsked about accomplishments he ability booty if acceptance acceptance in FY 2021 continues to lag, Oppenheim accepted that he will accept to accomplish the accommodation whether to accomplish antecedence dates “current” for all countries to atom applications for visas – apparently in the aboriginal bisected of FY2021 – because he wouldn’t appetite to unnecessarily “waste” numbers and if it comes to the point area he has to accomplish the antecedence dates “current” and accident corruption in abreast future, that ability be the accident he takes.
What would that mean? For example, let’s we go into FY2021 and we’re adverse the aforementioned bearings (i.e., affecting acceptance underusage), and Oppenheim has a bright almanac that the expectations of the summer 2020 were not met, accordingly it’s not reasonable to abide to accomplish those aforementioned assumptions for FY2021, which would advance Oppenheim to potentially authoritative aggregate “current.” Oppenheim would accept to argue with consulates (Guangzhou primarily) to see what they apprehend their processing accommodation to be as we move avant-garde – to see whether they could board beyond amounts of applicants.
For the time being, this is a alien possibility, abnormally for China. There are added than 42,000 Chinese applicants at NVC already, and it’s unrealistic now to accomplish antecedence dates “current” to acquiesce that abounding bodies to aback be eligible. Given constraints now at NVC and USCIS, Oppenheim does not appetite to unnecessarily tax the arrangement until it’s bright that he has no added choice. With that said, it’s not out the branch of achievability that aggregate could become accepted for some aeon of time in FY2021.
Status of Hong KongThe Department of State treats Hong Kong (and Macau and Taiwan) as a abstracted adopted area from acreage China for the purposes of clearing acceptance quotas. Thus, adopted nationals who are built-in in Hong Kong are not answerable beneath the acreage China acceptance categories. Oppenheim accepted that, absent any aldermanic change, Hong Kong will abide to be advised as a audible country of chargeability for EB-5 acceptance purposes, and that there is currently no affair for Hong Kong in agreement of EB-5 acceptance availability.
Nachtspaziergang, 1959 | Meret oppenheim, Sale artwork .. | check in with charlie oppenheim
India Acceptance MovementIn October 2019, Oppenheim estimated that the delay time for an EB-5 acceptance filed by an Indian broker would be 6.7 years. Back then, the antecedence date for India EB-5 has rapidly progressed forward. The July 2020 Acceptance Bulletin now lists the antecedence date for India EB-5 as “Current,” which agency that visas are anon accessible to Indian EB-5 acceptance applicants.
Oppenheim explained that based on the bulk of Indian EB-5 applicants already at NVC who already accept been or could be candy during FY 2020 (667), and the accepted access in the FY 2021 EB-5 acceptance absolute due to “spill over” of bare family-based immigrant visas during FY2020, Oppenheim expects to see a cogent abridgement in the 6.7-year delay time for an Indian EB-5 investors who are filing today. He does not apprehend to see India adverse a abeyant corruption in the accountable future. However, the EB-5 acceptance “wait times” could afresh access as USCIS picks up the clip of I-526 Petition adjudications and starts to accredit added petitions to the NVC for processing. Oppenheim avant-garde the antecedence date for India EB-5 in because he saw abeyant for numbers to go bare in FY2020 able-bodied afore consular offices closed.
“Overall,” comments Gindin, “even in an aberrant year like FY2020, there continues to be break of abatement for backlogged investors. Alike as EB-5 investors anguish about consular closures, continued acknowledgment times, and how to accomplish decisions about redeployment, they should be encouraged that, ultimately, corruption times will go bottomward a little anniversary year.”

A Former Volkswagen Executive Involved In Emissions Issues Is To Be Extradited To Germany
By Raevin Dunson, University Of Pennsylvania Class of 2020
July 22, 2020
Oliver Schmidt, the former general manager of Volkswagen’s United States Environment and Engineering Office, will be extradited to his native country, Germany,to serve the remainder of his sentence for his involvement in the Volkswagen emissions scandal [6]. Judge Elizabeth Stafford of Detroit approved the extradition on Thursday, July 16th [9].In December of 2017, Schmidt was sentenced to 84 months (7 years) in prison in the United States and was fined a criminal penalty of $400,000 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States and violating the Clean Air Act [3].
From around 2009to 2015, Volkswagen was involved in using a “defeat device” in their diesel engines to improve performance results and pass regulatory tests for compliance with permissible limits of carbon dioxide emissions [5]. Without the devices, Volkswagen diesel cars had emissions that were forty times higher than the legal standards [1]. Over 500,000 cars in the United States were supposedly affected by the emissions software, allowing them to stay within the parameters set by the Environmental Protection Agency during testing [8]. In addition to this, millions of cars worldwide were programmed with the device, and diesel vehicles under Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche models were all among the cars cited for violations [1]. This issue was discovered in 2015 following investigations into vehicle emissions by the International Council on Clean Transportation and students at West Virginia University [7]. In the United States, Volkswagen plead guilty to fraud in 2017, reaching a $4.3 billion settlement with the Department of Justice [5]. Overall, Volkswagen has had to pay over 30 billion euros, the equivalent of $33.3 billion, because of their emissions issues [11].
Nine people in total were charged by prosecutors in the United States for being involved with Volkswagen in altering emissions for testing purposes and allowing cars that were not compliant with environmental regulations to be sold [9]. Six of them are supposedly remaining in Germany to avoid the American justice system, as Germany does not extradite German nationals to countries outside of the European Union [9]. James Liang, a former Volkswagen engineer, is the only other person who has been prosecuted in the United States [6]. Liang was arrested in 2017 after admitting his involvement in conspiring to commit emissions fraud [11]. However, he was released from prison in November [11]. Axel Eiser, a former engineering manager for Audi, was arrested recently in June in Croatia, and he faces potential extradition to the United States to be prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice [4].
Martin Winterkorn is among those charged with conspiracy and fraud of the U.S. diesel vehicle emissions requirements [2]. Winterkorn was the former Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen AG and resigned after this issue came to light in September of 2015 [10]. In March of 2018, he was officially indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice [2]. However, as a German citizen currently residing in Germany, Winterkorn will likely not face prosecution in the U.S. [10]. Winterkorn maintains that he was not aware of the issue and reported it as soon as he was made aware [10]. However, prosecutors have asserted that there is evidence of him being informed of the diesel emissions software in May of 2014 and that he continued to allow them to be used to perpetrate fraud against the U.S. regulations [2].
This had a major impact on the diesel vehicle industry, and the automotive industry as a whole has changed significantly because of Volkswagen’s issues with emissions fraud.

Here Are 20 Headlines Comparing Meghan Markle To Kate Middleton That May Show Why She And Prince Harry Are Cutting Off Royal Reporters

Daily Mail / 2018, Daily Mail / 2019
Kate: "Bumping along nicely! The Duchess was seen placing a protective hand on her tummy as she exited the event." Daily Mail: March 22, 2018 Meghan: "Personally, I find the cradling a bit like those signs in the back of cars: Baby on Board. Virtue signaling, as though the rest of us barren harridans deserve to burn alive in our cars." Daily Mail: Jan. 26, 2019
Express / 2017, Express / 2019
Kate and William: "Prince William was given one of the green fruit – wrapped up in a bow – by a little boy who's mother is suffering during her pregnancy too... 'He said he'd take it to [Kate] and see what happens – and said good luck for [the boy's] mummy.'" Express: Sept. 14, 2017
Meghan: "The pregnant Duchess of Sussex and so-called 'avocado on toast whisperer' is wolfing down a fruit linked to water shortages, illegal deforestation and all round general environmental devastation." Express: Jan. 23, 2019
Daily Mail / 2016, Daily Mail / 2019
Kate: "Royal sources said yesterday that the Queen understood and endorsed William and Kate’s decision not to spend Christmas Day with her. One said: ‘Her Majesty understands that it is a dilemma that many young couples face and acknowledges how close Catherine’s relationship is with her family." Daily Mail: Dec. 16, 2016 Meghan: "The fact is the Queen expects to have the family around her for the festive season... to the Queen, for whom the tradition of the family gathering is a key date in her calendar, Harry and Meghan’s absence will be a matter of great sadness. It will also be a source of frustration." Daily Mail: Nov. 13, 2019
Daily Mail / 2014, Daily Mail / 2019
Kate and William: "Creating their own companies will allow William and Kate to bring out, should they ever chose to, myriad items of officially-endorsed merchandise from tea towels to coffee cups... Kensington Palace officials said they were doing the ‘sensible thing’ in protecting the couple’s rights." Daily Mail: Jan. 17, 2014 Meghan and Harry: "The Sussexes want to stamp their name on dozens of products including T-shirts, hoodies, journals and gloves for their newly-created foundation Sussex Royal...
' "'Catherine and I are clear we want both George and Charlotte to grow up feeling able to talk about their emotions and feelings.
A selection of candles, handwashes and lotions was requested, specifically in citrus spring scents including Orange Blossom, Grapefruit and the ever-popular Lime, Basil & Mandarin." Daily Mail: May 4, 2011 Meghan: "'Meghan wanted staff to go around with these atomizers, like spritzer guns, and spray the chapel with scent before anyone arrived.
29, 2011 Meghan: "[Meghan Markle] was holding a wedding bouquet which flowers were replicated in Princess Charlotte and the other bridesmaids’ flower crowns.
The Queen, 92, has a busy week ahead, with high-profile celebrations in central London marking the centenary of the RAF on Tuesday, and a visit by US President Donald Trump in Windsor on Friday." Daily Mail: July 9, 2018 Meghan and Harry: "The situation has surprised some senior staff at Buckingham Palace, who feel that the duke and duchess should have planned the day better.
14, 2013 Meghan: "The Queen's aides had told [Meghan] she would be wearing a green hat as a mark of respect to those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire.
That old uniform of girlish dresses, tan tights and nude heels has been replaced by dazzling super-chic outfits to satisfy even the most exacting fashionista." Daily Mail: June 16, 2019 Meghan: "Proper royalty is about tradition and duty, self-effacing service and loyalty — year after year after year, season after season...

Around the world, more see the U.S. positively than China, but little confidence in Trump or Xi

(Johannes Eisele/AFP via Getty Images)
More people around the world have a favorable view of the United States than China, according to a 2019 Pew Research Center survey of 33 countries. The U.S. receives significantly more positive marks than China in 21 of these countries – mostly clustered in Europe and the Asia-Pacific – while China fares better than the U.S. in seven countries.
At the same time, the leaders of these two global powers do not inspire much confidence. People in many surveyed countries hold negative views of both Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.
When it comes to views of the U.S. and China, the starkest gap is in Japan, where people are 54 percentage points more likely to have a positive view of the U.S. than China (68% vs. 14%). People in South Korea, the Philippines and India are also at least 37 points more likely to see the U.S. than China favorably. Large gaps of this nature also appear in many Central and Eastern European nations, such as Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and the Czech Republic.
In a handful of countries, people have more positive views of China than the U.S. For example, 71% of Russians see China favorably, while only 29% have a positive opinion of the U.S. People in Tunisia, Lebanon, Turkey and Mexico assess China more positively than the U.S., too. Nigerians also tend to be more favorable toward China than the U.S., but they are broadly positive about both nations, with 70% and 62%, respectively, saying they have a favorable view.
How we did this
This analysis focuses on understanding the international image of the United States compared with that of China, as well as confidence in the leaders of both countries. The data featured here includes both comparisons of attitudes at the country level, such as countries where more people have positive attitudes of China than the U.S., as well as people’s individual level attitudes, such as what share of the public has positive attitudes of both the U.S. and China. The post also includes views on bilateral economic ties, along with questions about perceptions of China and the U.S. as a threat or an ally.
For this analysis, we used data from a survey conducted across 33 countries from May 18 to Oct. 2, 2019, totaling 36,923 respondents. The surveys were conducted face-to-face across Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and South Asia and on the phone in North America and the Asia-Pacific. Across Europe, the survey was conducted over the phone in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK, but face-to-face in Central and Eastern Europe, Italy, Ukraine and Russia. U.S. data and analysis are excluded from this report.
Here are the questions used for the report (as released in December 2019 and January 2020), along with responses, and its methodology.
People in five countries hold nearly identical views of both the U.S. and China. For instance, majorities in Kenya and Bulgaria say they have a favorable view of China, as well as a favorable view of the U.S. This is often true at the individual level too. For instance, 56% of Israelis who say they have a favorable view of the U.S. also have a favorable view of China. A majority or plurality of people in nine countries see both nations positively, including in Greece, Ukraine, Israel, Kenya and Brazil.
In five nations – Sweden, France, Germany, Turkey and the Netherlands – people tend to be negative about both the U.S. and China.
When it comes to Xi and Trump, few in most surveyed countries tend to trust one leader and not the other. In fact, a lack of confidence in one leader often comes with a lack of confidence in the other.
In 18 of the 33 countries where the question was asked, publics say they have confidence in neither Xi nor Trump on matters of global affairs. This simultaneous negativity is most common in Western European nations and North America, especially in France, Sweden, Germany and Spain, where majorities are not confident in either leader.
Only in Russia do more people say they have confidence in Xi but not in Trump, while the opposite tends to be true in Israel. People in the Philippines, Kenya and Nigeria tend to be confident in both leaders at the same time.
In many of the countries surveyed, people also tend to think their nation has positive economic relations with both the U.S. and China. For example, eight-in-ten Israelis give a positive evaluation of the economic ties between their country and China as well as the U.S., and at least half or more say the same in Australia (72%), Kenya (64%), Nigeria (62%), the Philippines (58%) and South Africa (52%).
South Korea stands out as the only country in which a plurality of people say current economic ties with the U.S. are positive, while those with China are negative (37%). In contrast, Lebanese (39%) and Turks (30%) are more likely to see positive economic relations with China and not the U.S., though these publics are relatively divided.
Across the 17 countries where the question was asked, no more than around a quarter of people in any country say economic ties with both China and the U.S. are poor – though this sense is most common in South Korea (28%), Turkey (27%), Japan (24%) and Canada (22%).
Despite these views, few people tend to see the U.S. and China locked in a zero-sum competition when it comes to who is their greatest threat or most dependable ally.
For example, people were asked an open-ended question about which country will be their own nation’s closest ally in the future and which country or group represents the greatest threat to their nation. In most countries, there is little relationship between seeing China as a threat and the U.S. as an ally – or vice versa.
But the Asia-Pacific region stands out. About a third or more in South Korea, the Philippines, Japan and Australia say the U.S. is their most reliable ally and that China is their greatest threat. Very few in the six Asia-Pacific countries surveyed hold the opposite view.
On an individual level, at least one-in-five in Australia (20%), South Korea (26%), Japan (35%) and the Philippines (48%) name the U.S. as their greatest ally while also naming China as their greatest threat.

When the Duchess of Sussex turned up in New York City a few days ago, at first it seemed to be something of a surprise. There certainly was no advance warning a member of the Royal Family was visiting the U.S. But Meghan Markle’s decision to jet off on her own to the Big Apple for a baby shower with her celebrity friends may not be that unexpected after all, especially considering how she has gone about settling in with the family after she wed Prince Harry last May.
“I think we all knew Meghan was going to make waves when she married into the Royal Family, and she is doing just that,” said Katie Nicholl, Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent and author of the forthcoming paperback Harry and Meghan: Life, Loss and Love. “She and Harry have ripped up the royal rule book and are really doing things their own way.”
Meghan’s transition into the family started out smoothly enough.
“I think people were very positive about her beforehand,” said Penny Junor, a U.K.-based royal biographer and author of Prince Harry Brother Soldier Son.
And the 37-year-old has been well-received for everything from early charitable works — including a cookbook to support victims of the Grenfell tower tragedy — to her enthusiasm and warmth meeting people.
But it’s not all been sunshine and light for the California-born former actor. Much media attention has focused on the very public rift with her father, Thomas Markle — an ugly, awkward and ultimately sad state of affairs that burst into public display before the wedding and has continued sporadically since then. There’s also the suggestion of tension with her sister-in-law, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. Add to that the “Duchess Difficult” moniker Meghan has picked up — whether true or not — and it’s not the most regal of arrivals in the Royal Family.
From Junor’s perspective, the media “completely and utterly turned on Meghan” after she “put some noses out of joint” on a trip she and Harry took Down Under in October. During the trip, an event was called off, apparently over security concerns. “My understanding from the journalists that were there was that that was just not right at all,” said Junor. “There was no security issue. It was as though she was in a bit of a bad mood, and she just didn’t feel like doing it that day.”

Then came stories from sources — unnamed — that Meghan is difficult to get along with. She emails staff outside regular working hours. She wanted air fresheners in St. George’s Chapel ahead of her wedding to get rid of a musty smell. “Things like that — I’m sure it never occurred to her it would be a problem, because she’s not British,” says Junor. “She doesn’t understand that we British are very, very reticent about these things. You don’t just say what you want if you’re a Brit. You’re much more subtle about it.”
Nicholl has been surprised by some of the things Meghan has done “because they have really pushed royal parameters,” particularly a recent piece in People magazine, where it appears Meghan sanctioned five friends to speak on her behalf.
That was, Nicholl said, “quite a bold step” for a member of the Royal Family. “Clearly, Meghan felt that the palace’s strategy of not commenting wasn’t working and so she took charge of the situation, but I think communicating through friends in the media is a dangerous game, even though I can understand how frustrating it must be for Meghan not to have a voice.”
Still, Nicholl thinks Meghan has dealt well with the scrutiny she’s faced. “Seeing those images of her in [New York] remind us that Meghan is actually not just royal, but also the biggest celebrity on the planet right now. How she juggles that celebrity with being a royal is going to be fascinating to watch.”
Queens on screen
Olivia Colman is up for the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite. (20th Century Fox)
The Oscars could take on a regal tone Sunday night if voters favour The Favourite, and particularly if they give a nod to Olivia Colman as best actress for her portrayal of the formidable Queen Anne. Colman, who is also on tap to play another Queen — the current monarch, Elizabeth, in Netflix’s The Crown — has been widely praised for her performance as the 18th-century English monarch. But is the comedy-drama, complete with its suggestions of a lesbian love triangle involving Anne, Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough and a chambermaid named Abigail Masham anything close to the historic truth? And does that matter?
“Queen Anne isn’t the figure that is portrayed there, but at the same time, if you get too oh-really-they’ve-taken-such-liberties, then I’m sure they would just say, ‘Oh, you’re just being completely humourless about the whole thing,'” said London-based historian Anne Somerset, who has written a biography of Anne.
Certainly some of the broad strokes of history in the movie are true. And Anne’s health wasn’t good. But Somerset can easily rattle off points where the movie strays from reality — for example, its airbrushing out of Anne’s husband, to whom she was happily married. And there certainly weren’t 17 rabbits running around court, even if what they represent is true: her 17 pregnancies, which ended in tragedy, whether miscarriages, stillbirths or children who died young.
But what about one of the central tenets of the movie: the relationship among the women? “I don’t know,” said Somerset. “Personally, maybe this is very naive: I don’t think they ever did have a lesbian relationship, Anne and Sarah.” And Abigail is “not in any way as black as Sarah subsequently painted her.”
That said, Somerset thinks The Favourite is “streaks ahead” of another regal recreation on the big screen recently: Mary Queen of Scots. “In the case of Mary Queen of Scots … there is so much that happens in her life,” said Somerset. “I think it is very difficult to convey her whole career in a two-hour film, and then they didn’t help themselves by focusing on things that weren’t of first importance.”
Jenna Coleman plays Queen Victoria in a television series exploring the early years of her reign. (ITV)
The television series Victoria, set in the early years of that monarch’s reign in the 19th century, also takes liberties with the truth, but Somerset has found watching it more rewarding. Somerset said Victoria writer Daisy Goodwin “saturated [herself] in her subject and has got a real feeling for Victoria’s character so even if she does deviate from strict truth, she is always … intuitive at making things up.”
Of course, maybe knowing the history inside out makes it harder to enjoy any historic drama where liberties have been taken. To that end, Somerset sees another period piece on the horizon that may be easier for her to take. Helen Mirren (who has had regal turns as Queen Elizabeth II) is on tap to star as Russian empress Catherine the Great in an HBO series. “I’m blissfully ignorant about that,” said Somerset. “I’m sure I’ll find that much easier to swallow.”
What’s coming up for the royals?
The Big Event on the royal calendar for 2019 is the arrival of Harry and Meghan’s first child, although when exactly that is expected is a closely guarded secret. Any hints that have been dropped suggest the baby is due in “the spring” and more specifically, sometime in April.
Various reports suggest Meghan is about 30 weeks pregnant. In any event, it would appear the birth is still a few weeks away because Meghan and Harry flew to Morocco for a three-day visit this weekend, and presumably she wouldn’t fly if the birth were imminent or expected within the timeframe when airlines rule out air travel for pregnant women.
No other major royal events on the scale of jubilees or high-profile weddings are on the public calendar at the moment, although one royal marriage will take place in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Lady Gabriella Windsor, daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, will marry Thomas Kingston in the spring. Those nuptials will be considerably lower profile than the weddings of Harry and Meghan, and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank at the same location last year — there won’t be a carriage ride.
While members of the Royal Family routinely visit Canada, no visits have been announced for this year.

The royals in Canada
Princess Patricia lived in Canada from 1911 to 1916 when her father was governor general. (Getty Images)
On Feb. 22, 1918, Princess Patricia became honorary colonel-in-chief of the regiment that had taken her name: Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Patricia, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, had lived in Canada from 1911 to 1916 while her father, the Duke of Connaught, served as governor general. While she didn’t have a high profile in the United Kingdom, she became well known and popular in Canada, often accompanying her father and acting as hostess for him because of her mother’s uncertain health at the time.
“She was a young woman in her mid-20s who was seen as embracing modern life and some of the new opportunities for women,” said Toronto-based royal author and historian Carolyn Harris.
Princess Patricia and Maj. Worthington skate on a small rink in Ottawa in February 1914. (National Archives of Canada/Canadian Press)
Patricia had a lady in waiting who was a suffragist, and won renown for her artistic endeavours as a painter. She also enjoyed athletic pursuits, such as golfing or lacing up her skates in the winter. While there was much speculation that she would marry a prominent royal figure — maybe a future king, a prince or a grand duke — she took a non-royal route and married Alexander Ramsay, who had been her father’s naval aide-de-camp in Canada.
Ramsay proposed to her in Nova Scotia, so there was, Harris said, a Canadian background to that royal romance. And in that, maybe there are parallels to a royal romance a century later, when Harry and Meghan’s relationship had its own early times in Canada, too.

FOX4 recaps the biggest local stories of the decade
Joplin tornado (2011) – The costliest tornado in U.S. history hit the city of Joplin and surrounding areas on May 22, 2011.
The EF5 tornado was nearly a mile wide, with nearly 200 mph winds when it slammed into the southern part of the city, killing 161 people and injuring around 1,150 others, making it the deadliest tornado on record since 1947.
Some 7,500 homes were destroyed along with 500 business, causing $2.8 billion in damage. After Joplin, the National Weather Service made changes and improved warning systems for future storms.
Disappearance of Lisa Irwin (2011) – In the early morning hours of Oct. 4, 2011, Lisa Irwin was reported missing from her crib in her northland home, spurring an Amber Alert and furious search to find the 10-month-old baby.
Lisa Irwin was reported missing by her parents on October 4, 2011.
Suspicion soon fell on her parents, Jeremy Irwin and Deborah Bradley. The case made national news, and soon private investigators and hot shot attorneys were in town, trying to get their moment in the spotlight.
On Oct. 19, police executed a search warrant at the house and took several items.
Despite intense media interest in the case, Baby Lisa has never been found. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released an age progressed photo to show what she might look like at age 7.
JJ’s restaurant explosion (2013) – A massive gas explosion destroyed JJ’s restaurant on the Country Club Plaza on Feb. 19, 2013, killing server Megan Cramer and wounding 15 others.
The explosion, a report would later determine, was caused by Missouri Gas Energy after a contract worker struck a gas line.
The Missouri Public Service Commission found MGE liable for the explosion and said that the company violated public service rules. JJ’s has since re-opened in a new location.
Jewish Community Center shootings (2014) – On April 13, 2014 William Corporon and his grandson, Reat Underwood, were shot in the parking lot of the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park by an avowed white nationalist and anti-Semite.
Dr. William Lewis Corporon, Reat Underwood and Terri LaManno — victims in the Sunday, April 13 shootings at two Jewish facilities in Overland Park, Kan.
The shooter then drove to nearby Village Shalom, where he shot and killed Terri LaManno before being taken into custody outside of a nearby elementary school. The killer is now on death row.
The Seven Days “Make a Ripple, Change the World” event was created to honor the victims.
Shooting of Michael Brown and Ferguson protests (2014) – The shooting death of Michael Brown and its aftermath gripped Missouri and the nation. On Aug. 9,2014, Brown, a black teenager, was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson, who is white.
The next day, a candlelight vigil to honor Brown turned violent and weeks of unrest followed. School was postponed, a curfew was instituted, and police in St. Louis County rolled down the street in military tanks, armed with assault rifles.
Eventually, Governor Jay Nixon called in the National Guard to try and keep the peace after protesters fired shots at officers. Wilson resigned from the force four months after the shooting and a grand jury declined to indict him in the case.
After the shooting President Barack Obama announced $75 million in grants for police body cameras. The events in Ferguson helped give rise to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Arson death of KC firefighters (2015) – On Oct. 12, 2015 Kansas City firefighters John Mesh and Larry Leggio died when a burning building at Independence Avenue and Prospect collapsed on them.
John Mesh and Larry Leggio
The fire was determined to be the result of arson. Thu Hong Nguyen was convicted of intentionally setting fire to her nail salon in a scheme to get insurance money. She was later sentenced 74 years in prison for the deaths of Mesh and Leggio.
A permanent memorial to the two fallen firefighters now stands at Snyder’s Supermarket, directly across from the scene of the fire.
Royals win the World Series (2015) – 2015 will go down in history for Kansas City sports fans. After three decades, the Royals finally brought home the crown, defeating the New York Mets in game 5 of the World Series.
The team, including Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar, Salvador Perez and Lorenzo Cain, Alex Gordon and the late Yordano Ventura were treated like, well royals, upon their return to Kansas City with the trophy.
A sea of blue greeted the champs as they returned to KC for their victory parade.
Although it’s impossible to know exactly how many people packed the parade route, some estimates were as high as 800,000 fans.
Verruckt tragedy (2016) – The Verruckt water slide opened at Schlitterbahn in the summer of 2014 to much fanfare. Standing over 168 feet tall, it was billed as the tallest water slide in the world.
Caleb Thomas Schwab
The slide’s creator, Jeff Henry, even went on the Travel Channel’s Xtreme Waterparks bragging about the slide. Then, on Aug. 7, 2016 10-year-old Caleb Schwab died from injuries he sustained while going down the slide.
Caleb was the son of then state legislator Scott Schwab. Following his death, new regulations were passed in Kansas requiring a more stringent inspection process for amusement park rides.
Charges were brought against Henry and two other men in Schwab’s death. Those charges were later dropped on a technicality. Schlitterbahn is currently still standing, but hasn’t been in operation since 2018.
Kylr Yust charged with murdering two women (2017)– Though he was long suspected of being involved with the disappearance of his high school ex- girlfriend, Kara Kopetsky, Kylr Yust was charged with her murder, as well as the murder of another young woman in 2017.
Kara Kopetsky was last seen in 2007, leaving Belton High School. For nearly a decade, her parents kept her case in the public eye, hoping to generate leads that would close the case.
In 2016, Jessica Runions was seen leaving a party with Kylr Yust. Her car was found burned in south Kansas City and prosecutors charged Yust with arson. The remains of both women were discovered in April 2017 by a mushroom hunter in rural Cass County.
Yust is now facing murder charges. His trial is set to begin next year.
Shooting at Austin’s Bar and Grill (2017) – On Feb. 22, 2017, a man walked into Austin’s Bar and Grill in Olathe and opened fire on two men that he believed were Iranian. He reportedly yelled “get out of my country” and “terrorist” before opening fire.
Victims shot at Austins Bar & Grill on February 22: Srinivas Kuchibhotla – Alok Madasani – Ian Grillot. Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed.
Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed in the shooting and Alok Madasani was injured. Both men are from India. A third man, Ian Grillot, was shot while trying to defend the victims.
The shooter faced hate crime charges and was later sentenced to three consecutive life sentences.
Governor Eric Greitens resigns (2018)– Republican Eric Greitens defeated Democrat Chris Koster to become Missouri’s 56th governor.
His time in office would be short lived. The night of his state of the state address in Jan. 2018, KMOV published a report claiming Grietens had an extramarital affair with his hair stylist.
Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens
In an audio recording made of the woman’s comments and shared with the station by her ex-husband, the woman claimed that Grietens had taken photos of her without her consent and used them to threaten blackmail if she spoke about the affair.
Grientens admitted to the affair, but denied the other claims.
Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Governor when he was indicted in invasion of privacy charges by a St. Louis grand jury. He was also charged with campaign finance violations.
Both charges were eventually dropped and Grietens resigned in May, just as legislators were set to begin impeachment proceedings.
Midwest flooding (2019) – In 2019, Midwestern states suffered severe flooding along the Missouri River. It began as a snow melt event in South Dakota.
That, along with heavy rain, saturated farmland and towns in the Dakotas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska.
Thanks to the event, which began in march, 81 of Nebraska’s 93 counties received disaster declarations and record river levels were set in 42 different locations.
In the FOX4 viewing area, the town of Craig, Mo. was hardest hit, with the Missouri State Highway Patrol evacuating residents. I-29 north of St. Joseph was closed for months due to high water.
The flooding in the Kansas City area was officially declared over Dec. 16.

H4 EAD – Latest Updates for November 2019
H-4, dependent visa holders and the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) that they are eligible to receive since 2015 has been in the news lately and this time it is for a good reason. This past year has seen a lot of upheaval among the H-4 EAD holders when the DHS sent out an initial ruling to the Office of the Management and Budget rescinding the right to work for these H4 visa holders. In retaliation to that, a petition was floated on the White House website requesting the US government not to revoke the H4 EAD. Many immigration based law firms are appealing and fighting this proposed ruling.
H4 EAD November 2019 Update
The latest update for H4EAD dated November 2019 is that the case is pending in court. An additional document has been posted on the OMB meetings page regarding the rule. It talks about the positive impact of H4 EAD holders on the US economy and how it will negatively impact many.
H4 EAD October 2019 Update
The case to revoke H4 EAD continues to remain in a pending state. Surveys conducted about the effects and impact of H4 EAD holders on the US economy favors them and adds to their case.
Are you stuck in the H4 EAD processing backlog?
Here are ways to expedite the process
How to Expedite H4 EAD?
H4 EAD September 2019 Update
H4 EAD got its voice heard in court on September 27, 2019. Oral arguments have been scheduled when the Department of Homeland Security is set to make its case to rescind the right to work for H4 visa holders who came to the US based on the primary beneficiary, their spouse’s H1B visa. Set in motion in Yr. 2015, the DHS aims to terminate their right to work by the end of the first quarter of Yr 2020. As of September 10, 2019, The Office of Management and Budget is still reviewing DHS’s proposal to terminate the H4 EAD.
H4 EAD August 2019 Update
Based on our last update on the current state of H4 EAD, the OIRA has not reached a conclusion on what to do about rescinding the right to work for a spouse of a H1 work visa in the US. They are issued an EAD which allows them to be gainfully employed if they are on a certain stage of their Green card process.
H4 EAD May 2019 Update
As the decision on H4 Employment Authorization Document is expected to come soon, here’s a H4 EAD timeline of what has happened on the scene so far:
May 30, 2019: As of today, H4 EAD holders still hold hope that they have a fighting chance to hold on to their rights to work and support the US economy.
May 22, 2019: Proposal included within the “Spring Agenda” for the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs overseeing this draft implying that it is set to go to the next level in the decision-making process.
May 20, 2019: The 90-day comment period ended.
Mar 8 – May 1, 2019 – At least eight known meetings conducted with proponents and representatives evaluating the pros and cons of this proposal rescission.
Since March 22, 2019 however, USCIS stopped adjudicating H-4 and H-4 EAD applications concurrently with premium processing H-1B petitions. They process these applications under regular processing channels thereby delaying the simultaneous approvals granted to a single family.
Feb 20, 2019: DHS submitted H4 EAD revoke rules to the Office of Management and Budget review.
Dec 27, 2018: The Federal Court accepts a request from Immigration Voice Federal hear the case against DHS and argue in favor of H4 EAD.
Dec 21, 2018 – H.R 7150: H–4 Employment Protection Act of 2018 officially introduced by California Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren and Anna Eshoo. This bill prevents DHS from eliminating the H4 EAD work permit.
November 2018: Congress women Zoe Lofgren and Anna Eshoo write to DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen regarding a proposal with a H4EAD Protection Bill.
Oct 16, 2018: USCIS responds to their letter saying the USCIS is going to revise the proposal and review it keeping in mind the security and sanctity of the immigration process and keep the interests of the American worker first.
Sep 26, 2018 – U.S. Senators Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) write to USCIS highlighting the need for equal opportunity to eligible H4 candidates, prevent a barrier to employment, help spouses support their primary beneficiary in higher-cost areas thus preventing financial and psychological distress.

This week Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered a major distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that made it unavailable for some customers.
This week, threat actors launched a massive DDoS attack against Amazon Web Services (AWS) causing the inability of some customers to access their AWS S3 buckets.
Users were intermittently unable to access online services relying on the Amazon infrastructure that was under attack.
We’re investigating reports of intermittent DNS resolution errors with Route 53 & our external DNS providers. We’re working towards resolution & will post updates here: https://t.co/Frz0O4RoSl.
— AWS Support (@AWSSupport) October 22, 2019
According to the company status page, hackers were targeting the AWS DNS servers flooding them with junk network traffic.
The attacks lasted for around 8 hours, between 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM PDT, but some of DNS names experienced problems starting 5:16 PM.
The company reported intermittent DNS resolution errors with Route 53 and external DNS providers, it also informed the users of the ongoing DDoS attack.
“We are investigating reports of occasional DNS resolution errors. The AWS DNS servers are currently under a DDoS attack. Our DDoS mitigations are absorbing the vast majority of this traffic, but these mitigations are also flagging some legitimate customer queries at this time. We are actively working on additional mitigations, as well as tracking down the source of the attack to shut it down.” reads the notification sent to the AWS users. “Amazon S3 customers experiencing impact from this event can update the configuration of their clients accessing S3 to specify the specific region that their bucket is in when making requests to mitigate impact.”
Users attempting to access Amazon’s services were redirected to its status page.
The attack also impacted many companies, including Digital Ocean, which has had issues with accessing S3/RDS resources inside Droplets.
“Our Engineering team is continuing to monitor the issue impacting accessibility to S3/RDS/ELB/EC2 resources across all regions,” the company wrote on the incident’s status page at 23:25 UTC on Oct 22.”
At the time of writing all the impacted systems have been restored,

Wake Up and Smell the (Ro) Java
TUE OCT 22 2019
So... I think I’m starting to see where things may be going here, with Trump’s impeachment, the impending 2020 elections, and the information imparted by the bot who (according to my theory) composed the Bear Stearns Bravo message that Pronunciation Book presented on 9-24-2013.
Two entries ago I talked about how, “Dalton,” anagrammed to, “Donal T,” and that “Bear Stearns Bravo,” anagrammed to, “Arab Voter Base NSR,” with the NSR in that anagram standing for, “Northern Syria Rojava.”
Okay, so, back in the present, even though House Democrats are building an iron clad case against Trump for extortion of Ukraine, holding back badly needed military aid (that was already approved by Congress) to try and get President Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden... Congressional Republicans are still heavily resisting the legitimacy of the Impeachment Inquiry.
However...
Republicans have now all become fairly outspoken about Trump’s pulling out of Syria... calling it a disgrace, and a huge mistake that will have consequences for decades to come... on par with pulling out of Vietnam.
And they’re right about that.
But I now believe they are also telegraphing, to Trump, to his supporters, to the Democrats, and to the general public that this is the issue they are comfortable removing him over.
In other words... if there were some way for the Syria matter to make its way into the final counts of impeachment, before the Senate holds their trial... they just might convict him.
The clearest bellwether on this is Lindsey Graham, who in the space of one week, both publicly castigated Trump for pulling out of Syria, but then today, defended Trump for tweeting that the impeachment inquiry was a, “lynching.”
Mitch McConnell, meanwhile, did not have anything to say about the, “lynching,” tweet, but did pen an op-ed in the Washington Post this past week condemning the decision to get out of Syria... after saying last week that he would not try to delay any Senate Impeachment hearing if it came to that.
So, my theory here is they want their own, face-saving excuse to convict Trump in the Senate when that Democratic Impeachment gets done in the House.
They want there to be a count of Impeachment having to do with grave incompetence in foreign affairs... such that it threatens national security. Call the charge what you will... dereliction of allies... gross military endangerment... all that matters is the language be acceptable to die hard Republican voters who do not wish to think of themselves as giving in to the Democrats.
So, what this would look like is... the House handing over counts of impeachment which include, say, obstruction of justice, obstruction of Congress, emoluments violations, and... reckless military incompetence.
Then, all or most of the GOP senators can exonerate Trump on the first three counts, but just enough of them can convict him on that final count, for Trump to be removed... yet still allowing them to go to their home states to campaign, and say, “I vehemently opposed what the Democrats were trying to do, but when it came to the one count of military incompetence, all I could think of were those brave Kurdish soldiers who helped us defeat Isis, and how Trump betrayed them. And now, as you see... Isis threatens us once more!”
Now, I’m not saying this is how it will all play out. All I’m saying is, this is how the GOP currently would rather it play out.
They hate Trump just as much as the Democrats, for the most part, but they’d like a face-saving excuse to convict and remove him... and Syria is that face saving excuse... if it can be shoe horned into the counts of impeachment... not specifically... but symbolically in some generalized charge of incompetence they can spin to the public as being about Syria.
Clearly, they should be (and probably are) as worked up about Trump abandoning the Ukrainians, as they are about the Kurds, but... politically they can’t do that, because... well the Democrats beat them to that one, and now it looks bad to side with Democrats.
Billy Bob Trump supporter doesn’t care if Russia is trying to take over Ukraine, because Putin is white.
What does Billy Bob fear? Isis! They’re Islamic! They’re brown, and they worship a different god! Also... that name, “Isis,” is the name of a female Egyptian goddess... and what do Trump supporters hate more than brown people?.. Women!
Okay, so... I think that’s the GOP plan of the moment, but... this current shit storm is only one month old. And in those four weeks... holy God has it picked up steam!
We have no idea where we’ll be by the time the actual impeachment trial gets underway. Thanksgiving and Christmas are staring us in the face. The Iowa caucuses will happen right after that... and the bombshells have not stopped falling... either from the inquiry, or from Trump himself, making one horrible decision after another as he slowly unravels.
Trump chose, randomly, to pull out of Syria in the days AFTER the whistle blower scandal and impeachment inquiry began. It came out of nowhere, and never needed to happen... just like the tariffs on China... which was the last thing (inverted yield curve) that threatened to turn the GOP against him.
What I’m saying is, as more damning testimony comes out of the House inquiry on the Ukraine scandal (and it keeps getting worse, and swallowing up more of his cronies every day) Trump himself is probably going to continue making moves that shake his powerful defenders (in the corporate sphere, Congress, and even the SC) to their core.
He tried it just before the weekend, in fact, by announcing he’d hold the next G7 summit at his Doral Florida hotel and golf course... but was force to walk it back a few days later... as he was forced to walk back his threats of higher tariffs on China (at least for the moment).
But he can’t walk back the troop withdrawal from Northern Syria.
And he’s likely to make more desperate, self defeating moves like that, which cannot be reversed, or waved away, as this shitstorm progresses at breakneck speed.
We could well see a day, in the very near future where Republicans cannot even pretend to be giving him the benefit of the doubt about anything anymore.
And, as with Nixon, it’s gonna come down to the GOP power base telling him, “resign, or we’ll remove you.”
And Trump will refuse, because he’s on the hook for state crimes in NYC that will put him in jail, and he’s got nowhere to flee into exile.
Such a standoff could get extremely ugly... with GOP Senators and conservative SC Justices having to side with House Democrats in a big hurry to convict him in the middle of the night, and swear in Pelosi, so that she can take over command of the Military and Justice Department, in order to do battle with a small army of armed mercenaries protecting Trump in his bunker.
That doesn’t even sound crazy anymore, after all we’ve been through with this asshole over the past three years.
So, while in this moment, in late October of 2019, the GOP is still daydreaming that they might be able to find some face-saving way to neutralize Trump... they need to wake up and realize, the time for that is over.
