"an entire industry built on the dead" is such a good line, don't understand the choice to change it to "an entire city built on top of the dead" for the movie version
but the movie version still has "your designer heart still beats with common blood" which i guess is. an ok tradeoff

engie and conductor. would they build a pillow fort, for the otp ask game?
[post]
This has been in my drafts for ten months because I kept wanting to draw it and kept being too burnt out to draw it.
Yes, the two of them 100% would, and Engie would draw up plans for it on her drafting table to make sure it was structurally sound before they built it, because she's a consummate professional who loves making too much work for herself.
The second it's done Conductor uses it to force her to go to sleep, because he'll do anything to get her to take better care of herself.

I do think that any time people say stupid shit about government research should remember the guy who got the grant to annoy gila monsters and find out what’s in their gross but not dangerous venom. And what he found is the cure to 2-3 of the most common diseases and what might be the cure to like, all modern ailments. Truly gila monster spit is the Spice Melange of 21st century America.

Liz, Biotechnician
Part 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Sir, with all due respect, this is horseshit.”
Elizabeth Collins stood in front of the giant desk, usually manned by the entirety of the Admiralty, now barely a sixth taken up by one man, Admiral Townes, who just sighed. This was clearly not how he wanted to spend his afternoon. He could be golfing with the Riltayon ambassador, their species had the lower half of arachnids, but no, he got picked for this.
“You knew going in that the Herald was set to be decommissioned at the end of this year, you knew it would be a short posting when you asked for it,” he said, bracing himself. This was gonna be rough. Ensign Liz was infamous for being…vocal.
“Sir, that’s not the issue here and you know it. I worked my ass off to get that posting. I got to cut my teeth on a heavy cruiser for god’s sake,” Liz said, flushed. “My grades at the academy were flawless, and my record shows-”
“Your record?! Let’s talk about your record for a moment.” A few taps on the table and a holoscreen appeared. Through the transparency Liz could see her file photo as well as lines of shifting texts as updates and memos filed in. “Your first week aboard you locked a supervising officer in a containment field and sedated him with gas.”
“The guy had a zeno-sporic infection, so I only really gassed the mushrooms. Plus I cured him.”
“A month later you stole a shuttle and jumped to restricted space to collect samples of…” a few scrolls down, “…why does this just say glowing rocks?”
“Because the proper noun for them isn’t pronounceable by humans, we don’t have beaks, sir.”
“Why’d you need glowing rocks?” Townes asked.
“Because the rocks were radioactive, and one of the Zilgrats we had on board at the time needed an interesting blend of chemotherapy, it’s actually really cool when…”
“Enough, ensign.” Admiral Townes cut her off, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Elizabeth…Liz. Clearly, you are your father’s kid. You are brilliant, and fearless.”
“Thank you, sir, I know dad would be happy to hear you say that.”
“I wasn’t finished. You’re also completely irresponsible, have zero regard for protocol or regulations, and think you’re always right. I’m reading that word for word from your file, your last captain made it the first thing you read in there.” Townes clicked off the hologram and sighed.
“Look, Liz, I’m not saying this as an admiral right now. I’m saying this as your uncle. Your dad, my brother, made me promise to watch out for you when he left the service, so that’s all I’m trying to do here.”
Liz took a beat before speaking.
“I understand that, sir.”
“Your new assignment has already been certified by the admiralty, and you ship out from Tranquility in two days on board the Noah.”
Liz, in the middle of rolling her eyes, actually did a double take. “The Noah? That test ship for interspecies cooperation?” That might actually change things, an opportunity to examine different species up close for extended periods of time was a goldmine of research for her.
“You need to know though, this is your last shot. Every rules, every regulation, to the letter, or I can’t help you anymore, regardless of what I promised your dad.”
Liz didn’t stop to think too hard about it.
“Deal.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the 50 years since the Human race had joined the GAIL, or the Grand Assembly of Intelligent Lifeforms, it had undergone several extreme and extraordinary changes. The first being the level of technology. In the early 21st century we got to experience communication and information technology progress by leaps and bounds, and that was managed just by ourselves. The addition of alien technology added rocket fuel to that particular bonfire. Our understanding of biological and technological sciences shot forward by centuries, as well as transportation, namely space flight. Our first interplanetary guests, the lizard like Quintins, shared their forcefield and artificial gravity specs to make interstellar travel safer for us as well.
They were, however, initially horrified at our ‘rudimentary’ first designs. There were a lot of questions like ‘you use explosives as initial propellant?’ and ‘you shot into space at faster than light speeds without any shield array?’ In retrospect, the human race should not have gotten as far as it did. But there we were, members of a collective 200 species strong, setting out into the stars to explore the universe.
Ensign Liz Collins was thinking about such things as she walked the gangway aboard the Noah, a midsized exploratory ship, the first in a new line of experimental expedition vessel. The experiment was two fold. The first, and more practical, was to test a new propulsion system the science and engineering division of the GAIL had submitted. In theory it was capable of long sustainable WARP time with a significantly higher energy efficiency compared to older models, as well as a new power core make up to keep the ship running longer between docking. Supposedly the Noah would be capable of going at least a year without a recharge.
The second, more dubious aspect of the experiment was to see how many different species handled being in close proximity to one another. The Noah’s full crew compliment numbered exactly 100, and of the 200 races in the GAIL, 25 volunteered to put 4 members each of their species on board. Meaning Liz would only see 3 other humans for potentially the next year of her life.
How exciting, she thought. Finally a chance to study what the Galaxy has to offer up close and personal.
The cast off ceremony was boring. The captain, she believed he was a member of the Mergal species, was the only reason she didn’t try to sneak out. It appeared he had a cybernetic limb above the second insect set on his abdomen, which was interesting. Definitely more interesting than the other three humans she saw in the crew line up.
Afterwards she finally made it to the science division and booked it to biotech. The lab was state of the art, next gen super computers, stasis field generators, even a gene splicer!
“Oh hell yes,” Liz said, taking it all in. “Yeah, I can make this work.”
The only thing that stood out to her, however, was the potted plant in the corner. It was about 5 foot tall, standing in a square aluminum ‘pot’, the only thing in the room that wasn’t made of metal or ceramic. Upon closer inspection, it was more like a small tree or sapling, where its vines had wrapped around one another to grow up instead of hang down, with a lush leafy canopy.
“Why is there a tree in my lab?” Liz said, mostly to herself, but apparently the tree had an answer for her.
“Because this is my lab as well.”
Liz was so startled she thought the translator would fall out of her ear.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know there were any Sprygans on the crew!” Liz dropped her stuff onto the counter and approached the tree, who she now recognized as her crewmate. “I’m, uhh, Ensign Elizabeth Collins. You can call me Liz, if you like.” She held out her hand, unsure of even how they’d shake. As she stood there, the tree pulled itself out of the pot and onto the floor, dragging soil and dirt with it as its roots retracted into its body. Outside the pot the Sprygan only stood about 3 1/2 feet tall.
“Why is your…hand(?) out?” It asked. Liz’s translator registered two questions asked, and she realized the Sprygan wasn’t sure what a hand was.
“Oh, sorry,” she said, dropping her arm, “it’s how my people greet each other. Sorry.”
Great. First new species she’s gotten to meet and she’s acting the fool. Chocking it up to nerves, she tried to get back on track.
“What should I call you?” She asked. “Any pronouns I should be aware of?”
Liz watched as a vine extended from their body and reached out to grab a photo bar and switch it on. The bar lit up with synthetic star light and Liz realized the Sprygan was eating.
“You can call me whatever is convenient for you. On Spryga only the colonies have names, and I am not there right now.”
Liz was simultaneously baffled, intrigued, and mortified. She knew this, she knew all of this, this was practically social studies 101. She had to get her footing here. Townes voice in her head was disappointedly saying ‘Last chance’ over and over again. Change of topic then.
“Why’d your people volunteer for this mission then? I thought Sprygans didn’t leave their home world for anything.”
The Sprygan looked at her a moment, or at least she thought it did. Hard to tell when it didn’t have eyes.
“We came to see how predator species behave, so as better to surpass(?) them on our home world.”
The word ‘surpass’ flagged an error in her translator. Liz tapped the earpiece she was wearing and went to the alternative translation.
[Survive]
Oh. Oh god damnit. Liz you idiot. The Sprygans were a plant based race, they weren’t hunter or gatherers, they were basically the vegetables to other species on their home planet, of course they had predators they’d have problems with.
“Yeah, uhh, that makes sense.”
Before she could make any other off handed mistakes, Liz was quite literally saved by the bell.
“Attention all hands, this is your captain speaking. The start of our year long mission begins now. You all know the purpose of this ship is to test not only our mettle, but our spirits as well. Every species, every crewmate aboard this ship is going to be tested in ways they never have before, to the utmost limits. Help each other. Stand with each other. Because together, we’re going as far as our connections can take us. Everyone, to your stations. We’re going to WARP.”
The announcement clicked off. The Sprygan climbed back into their pot. Liz sat down at her station and sighed.
It was gonna be a long year.

A thing I think about a lot is how much of human history didn't have painkillers. People have always used various botanical crap with pain alleviation properties, but they weren't always effective or readily available or safe. For eons of time, people had toothaches and had to just be in excruciating pain until it either went away or killed them.
Whenever I meet someone who's like "Oh, I don't take pain killers," it actually makes me kind of mad. Otzi the ice man had a series of tattoos on his joints that were applied repeatedly over time. We think they were an attempt to cure joint pain potentially brought on by arthritis. That guy had to climb up and down mountains in the bitter cold and kill his own food and he had to do it while suffering from joint pain without so much as an aspirin, and your 21st century ass thinks you're too good for tylenol. It disgusts me.
This post brought to you by my infected tooth that is being managed by safe, effective antibiotics and safe, effective over-the-counter pain medications so well and efficiently that less than 24 hours after my doctor appointment I am existing comfortably and eating a nice, chewy salad for lunch without a care in the world. This one's for you, Otzi. We made it.

Tumblr media
The following companions have platonic and romantic routes.
Kieran Collins - The Shifter
137 years old (looks early 30s) | Irish | male | he/they
Kieran is a shifter who takes on the form of a wolf. They have full control of when they shift, although it can be painful if they shift too often between resting. In his human form, he relies on knives and has spent his life studying supernatural rituals and artifacts.
Charlotte St. Claire - The Deadly English Rose
28 years old | English | female | she/her
Charlotte is a Londoner with a dark past, having spent a large portion of her life entangled with the dangerous underworld of London. This path led to her imprisonment by a group of vampires who treated her as their personal blood bag. After escaping on the precipice of her death, she was found by Kieran who took her under his wing.
River Silvius - The Witch
32 years old | American | non-binary | they/them
River is the youngest witch in their family and was raised in the state of Washington. They are currently a professor at the New York Institute of Witchcraft, the premier witchcraft college in North America. They sometimes work on cases with Bennett.
Katerina Kallergis - The (Other) Vampire
282 years old (looks late 20s to early 30s) | Greek | female | she/her
Katerina is a vampire who was born in Greece almost three-hundred years ago. She despises vampirism - including herself and other vampires. Not much is known about members of her clan, the Infinitum, as they are a tight-knit group of vampires who value privacy and usually avoid other supernaturals as much as possible.
Bennett Williams - The Cowboy
31 years old | American | male | he/him
Bennett grew up on a ranch in Texas, where he was the only survivor of a Heaven’s Hunters (HH) attack that wiped out his family, including his sister who was a Witch and the intended target. He is currently a private investigator for supernaturals and their families. He is fond of his cowboy hat and shotgun and wears an eyepatch on his left eye.
There will be additional characters who play their own role in the story, including members of the Vampiric Round Table, clan leaders, Heaven’s Hunters, and more. However, this post would be too long to list all of those people.
Tumblr media
Here’s a brief look at the six possible backstories for MC. Subject to change if needed by the author.
Shadow of War World I
Born: 1896 - London, England | Turned: 1915 - Loos-en-Gohelle, France
Born in the heart of London, your life brimmed with dreams. But those were overshadowed by the devastating turmoil of World War I. You were driven by a sense of duty at 19 years old and enlisted alongside your best friend from secondary school. After watching your best friend fall in combat, you were overwhelmed by survivor’s guilt and were left trying to navigate the war-torn world without them. Eventually, you were dying on a different battlefield, reminded of them. But as the darkness closed in, so did a vampire…
Shadow of the Roaring 20s
Born: 1898 - New York, NY | Turned: 1922 - New York, NY
Born to a working-class family in the heart of New York City, you spent the entirety of your mortal life there. Your Sire was drawn to you as soon as you entered the speakeasy that fateful night… as your connection with your Sire grew, so did both of your desires to never lose each other. A year after being turned, a relentless group of vampire hunters took them from you as they sacrificed themself for your sake...
Shadow of the Spanish Renaissance
Born: 1608 - Barcelona, Spain | Turned: 1635 - Madrid, Spain
Born to a merchant family in bustling Barcelona, your early years were spent comfortably and your family hoped you would follow in their footsteps. But your passions lay elsewhere. You found yourself inspired by artists such as Coello and Velázquez, and frequented libraries and salons. As you grew older, the weight of familial obligations bore down upon you. One night while you were in Madrid visiting friends, a vampire approached you with a proposal…
Shadow of the French Revolution
Born: 1770 - Vizille, France | Turned: 1799 - Paris, France
Born to a family of budding rebels in Vizille, you experienced the backdrop of social unrest and discontent. As the revolution began to spread across France, you found yourself at the midst of it in Paris. It is there that your Sire became fascinated by your sense of justice and chose you to be their eternal descendent. Against your deepest desires, you were thrust into immortality, a fate you never sought, as your original intention was simply to fight for the betterment of humanity…
Shadow of the Zhou Dynasty
Born: 890 B.C. - Western Zhou | Turned: 867 B.C - Western Zhou
Born into a prestigious family, you spent much of your time at court, learning from tutors and schemers alike. As a young adult, you were caught in the crossfires of a power struggle within the court. Betrayed by those you once trusted, you were the victim of an assassination attempt. You only remember your eyes closing….and then waking up as a vampire, your sire nowhere in sight…
Shadow of the Nile
Born: 1050 B.C. - Tanis, Egypt | Turned: 1023 B.C - Thebes, Egypt
Born to a family of esteemed lineage, you were raised in the sacred walls of the Temple of Amun-Ra in preparation for your future as a religious figurehead. You did eventually become an important leader in Thebes during a time of political imbalance. But then you died. When you awoke, a vampire was watching over you with an amused look. They swore to have found you already dying in an alley…
-----
Asks are welcome if you so desire, however, I won't be doing NSFW reactions or long reactions at this time. I will still do some regular reactions and answer general NSFW. Thanks!
P.S. please let me know if there's an error in the post, thanks <3

Avelera's Dreamling Fic Status Update:
Keeping Sanctuary (subscribe for updates here) - Giving Sanctuary Sequel follows Dream and Hob from the events of the altered meeting in 1689 up to the modern era. (aka, What if they hooked up after the 1689 meeting?) Current word count: ~7,000 words across several chapters. Realistic progress update: 1/10 complete total, Ch. 1 is about 1/5 complete.
(The rest are below the cut!)
Come live with me and be my love - Dream and Hob fall in love during the Regency Era when Dream loses a bet to Desire. Shenanigans ensue. (aka, What if they hooked up after the 1789 meeting?) Ch. 16 is at 2,500 words, probably about 1/3 done. Current plan is to wrap up Part 1 in the next few chapters then create a part 2 which finishes out their "1 year of marriage" on a month by month basis instead of following them day to day like Part 1 done. Probably won't be a separate fic though, just a change of format.
This Rough Magic - My take on "Hob rescues Dream from Burgess" with a twist that Hob ends up on Burgess's radar himself when he picked up some occult magic skills in the hopes of contacting Dream after 1889 and apologizing. Now he has to pretend to be friends with Burgess in order to get them both out of there, because Burgess thinks Hob can help force Dream to give him immortality. (aka, What if they hooked up after the 1889 meeting?) Ch. 9 is about 800 words in. Story is still very much in progress I just have a lot of WIPs, as you can see.
Joke's On You (I'm Into That) - The 1589 meeting goes very different when Hob proposes to Dream, who is so offended that he just can't let the matter go. A very angry, very horny competition kicks off between them. (Aka, what if they hooked up in 1589 when they were both at their absolute worst as people?) I have literally 40,000 words written for the rest of this fic. The problem is, there's big gaps in that first draft I have to fill in and scenes that need to be added. This might be my favorite WIP but it's also the hardest to write with all the smut scenes so it'll arrive whenever I can manage, I'm afraid.
Banana Daiquiris Ch. 2 - Comic-canon compliant (mostly) - Dream fakes his death to go on a vacation with Hob and Destruction. They end up in Tahiti. Destruction plays matchmaker. Hob doesn't know whether to thank Destruction or strangle him. Current word count 6,000 words. I've been playing around with adding on to this fic for ages. One of these days, I'll pull it all together.
Great Triumphs and Tragedies - aka, "Dream Accidentally Cursed Hob with a Normal Life" Fic - Dream learns that from 1689 on, Hob's life has been safe. Too safe. Improbably safe. Nothing bad or extraordinary or even terribly special has happened to him since Dream began to consider Hob his friend. He knows this because during his imprisonment, Hob's life became exciting again and suddenly went back to normal the day Dream was freed. Hob is not convinced that Dream is the reason for this, Dream disagrees. They talk about it. And fight about it. And some things that they've probably needed to talk about for a long time finally get said. (aka, sometimes the author just needs to write their weird headcanon into a 20,000 word fic that's almost entirely dialogue). Current word count: 19,000 words and about 80-90% finished, 3 of 4 chapters written. I'm hoping that posting what I've got will help push me through the final stretch. Real life interrupted for a bit though.
Unraveling Centuries, aka the Hob Amesia Fic - Dream and Hob are dating officially now in the 21st century when Hob gets hit with what seems to be a memory loss curse, shaving off 100 years of his life each day until Dream finds a cure. This effectively grants Dream a walk down memory lane as he is reacquainted with the Hob of each era and, in the process, learns how much longer Hob cared for him than Dream ever realized. Current word count: 40,000 words. Currently writing 1489 (1889-1589 are done) and re-writing the opening. First chapter is posted!
And for fics that haven't been posted anywhere yet (you can subscribe on my Ao3 author page for alerts about them):
"Fairy God Marlowe" - 1589 fixit fic where Hob and Kit Marlowe strike up a conversation while Dream and Shaxberd are talking. Hob and Marlowe talk about plays, and faith, and salvation, and queer love, and what it means to live forever. Hob gets a second chance at a first impression. Current word count: ~5,000 words. Sadly, it's all dialogue in script format. I'd need to convert it into prose to publish which would be a slog. So it's a bit shelved until I find the energy to do so. No, I will not post it in script format, I'm allergic to the thought.
I've got a few other concepts kicking around, but these are the ones that actually have (*does a quick calculation*) over 100,000 words written that I haven't had the chance to post yet?? And it's driving me insane????
Anyway, I should probably pin this post for those curious lol. Feel free to ask me any follow-up questions, I love talking about WIPs even as they ruin my life!

Everyone shut up, it's happy headcanon time 😌
After the first and only wizarding war, Remus and his friends revolutionised the treatment of werewolves by the wizarding world.
Marlene pioneered the first comprehensive treatment program for werewolves. Rather than a disease to be cured (or, worse, a crime to be punished), her program reframed it as a chronic illness to be managed day to day. It focused solely on quality of life, by minimising long-term damage from transformations and related injuries, maximising "well" periods between moons, and educating and empowering werewolves to manage their own health as much as possible.
Lily proposed and conducted formal trials of transformation management approaches, with particular focus on working with animagi. Naturally, Sirius and James innocently volunteered for the trials - as a public service, of course. The Ministry was less than impressed by the whole affair, but Lily was as diligent as ever and, once James and Sirius learnt to keep their mouths shut, she had relatively little trouble getting the project approved.
Remus himself, of course, worked in advocacy and dedicated his life to dispelling stigma and supporting new werewolves and their families. He mentored hundreds of wizards - werewolves and regular wizards alike - and was unanimously considered alpha to the massive, mismatched, ragtag pack he collected over the years.
It took a long, long time, but by the dawn of the 21st century werewolves were by and large being treated alright by the wizarding world. They were no longer forced onto a public registry, no longer forced to be kept under lock and key during transformations. Instead, they voluntarily attended clinics manned by animagi and located in outlying areas of Britain, where they would be able to transform in safety and then explore the woods as they pleased under the full moon.

How Seasons 8-10 could have been GOOD
Season 8
Nix the angel-on-angel violence. Been there, done that, bought the trenchcoat
None of the heavenly trials BS
Henry shows up in episode 2 or 3 with Abaddon in tow.
The brothers work with Henry trying to stop Abaddon and find Kevin, interspersed with monster-of-the-week episodes.
Dean is too preoccupied with Abaddon and Henry to bitch at Sam for logically believing Dean was at peace in Heaven
Abaddon vs Crowley
Demon politics
Winchesters + Kevin and Crowley reluctantly working together and trying to outwit each other
(Sam and Dean having a home and grandfather/father figure!)
(Henry adjusting to 21st century culture and technology!)
(Kevin teaching him how to use computers)
(Linda Tran. That is all.)
(Audience actually getting attached to Henry because he's not KILLED OFF IN HIS FIRST EPISODE)
Abaddon kills Henry in the season finale
Season 9
Monster of the week opening
Supernatural Intro
Henry's funeral
(See what I did there)
The boys are back, and this time, they're out for blood
Crowley introduces the boys to Cain mid-season
Dean takes the Mark to avenge their grandfather over Sam's objection
The Mark's effect on Dean progressively getting worse
Dean and Abaddon both die in the climactic season finale battle. Dean gives Sam the same speech
Same end scene with Crowley and Deanmon
Season 10
The Suite Life of Deanmon and Crowley
(Deanmon is gathering supporters for a coup)
(Your king had to rely on a Winchester to take out his opposition)
Charlie stealing the Book of the Damned from the Styne family
Rowena and Crowley
Charlie and Kevin: nerd bros
Deanmon escapes from the devil's trap
He slices his own arm and offers to let Sam drink his blood.
He apologizes for how he treated Sam. How he reacted to his abilities, to the demon blood. He was the monster, not Sam
It's everything Sam ever wanted to hear
(and it's devastating because it's not really Dean saying it)
"No," Sam says. "This isn't you talking."
Aren't you tired of losing people, Sam? Deanmon asks.
Every time we end one threat, something bigger and badder follows
They can change that if they rule Hell
Only souls that actually deserve to be in Hell will be tormented
"Take it," he urges, holding out his arm
Castiel to the rescue
Dean is asleep in his room after being cured
Sam and Castiel are in the kitchen
"Are you alright, Sam?" Cas asks
"Yes." He shakes his head. "No. I..." He turns puppy dog eyes on the angel. "I wasn't going to take it."
"I know." Cas says. He reassures Sam he trusts him, that he's proud of him
Sam embraces him
"You're supposed to hug back, Cas."
"Oh." And he does.
Dean is cured, but the Mark is still there
Styne evilness
Charlie dies
Dean's killing spree
The Mark is removed
Out of the frying pan and into the fire
