They had to…clean the Bronco before arriving at Shells and they did end up making out a few more seconds. But nothing more than that, even if he did want to. He couldn’t stop smiling as he drove them to Shells’ house and Beatrice’s blush only made him smile harder.
‘Stop it.”
“What?” he asks with an ‘innocent’ shrug “I’m just happy.” he could still taste her lips and he rolled his own lower lip into his mouth to keep that in, “We had a great night, didn’t we? And now we are going to get Nikki and go back home.”
His wife, while smiling, was blushing because of him. He always made her blush so much it was incredible.
Beatrice couldn't help but giggle at Rooster's antics, shaking her head as she reached over to squeeze his thigh playfully. "You're such a flirt," she teased, her smile radiant. "But I love you for it." She leaned over and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek.
Rooster chuckled at her affectionate gesture, his heart warmed by her words. "I love you too, gorgeous," he replied, his tone soft. "I just wanna go back home now, I am…exhausted, something." he waves his hand in the air, “Something tired me for some reason.”
“Oh,hush.”
They pulled up in front of Shells' house, and Rooster parked the Bronco. As they got out of the car, with Rooster opening the door for her, offering her his hand and kissing the back of it, they headed towards the front door, Beatrice could just laugh more because he was just beaming.
She knocks on the door and squeaks when Rooster stands behind her, kissing her neck and earning a gentle pinch on the hip, “Rooster! You can’t do that, Shells will open the door any second!” but she did laugh when he kissed her more, “Stop it you.”
Rooster chuckled as he continued to shower Beatrice with playful kisses, his lips lingering on her neck. "I can't help it," he murmured, his voice husky. "You just look so damn irresistible tonight."
Beatrice blushed furiously, her laughter mixing with the soft sighs escaping her lips. "Roos, please," she whispered, her fingers lightly grazing his cheek as she turned to face him. "Not here."
Rooster couldn't resist leaning in for one more quick kiss, this time on her lips. He pulled back with a mischievous grin, swiping her chin with his thumb. "Fine," he said, "I'll behave...for now."
Before they could exchange any more affectionate banter, the front door of Shells' house swung open, revealing Shells herself. She looked…alright? Her hair was hidden because of a Dodgers cap and her pajamas didn’t match…she was also holding Nicole close and she too had the Dodgers cap on her head, “Hate to say it Rooster.” she begins, “But your daughter is a Dodgers fan.” she blinks, “What are the Virginia teams anyway?”
He didn’t look impressed, “I am a Phillies fan and she’d never choose the Yankees over them.”
Shells chuckled at Rooster's reply, placing her free hand on her hip "Well, she seems to like the Dodgers for now," Shells remarked with a playful grin as she looked down at Nicole, who seemed completely unfazed by the conversation, chewing on her tiny fist. "But who knows, she might change her mind as she grows up. It’d be wrong but–”
“Oh,ha ha ha,” he replies dryly, picking his daughter from Shells’ arms and kissing her soft cheek once she’s close enough, “She will grow knowing who’s the best.”
Beatrice could only chuckle, focusing back on Shells, “She didn’t give you any trouble, did she?” and then immediately grabbed Nikki from Rooster, because their daughter decided to slide all the way towards her instead of staying in her father’s hold.
As Beatrice took Nicole into her arms, Shells shook her head with a smile. "Nah, she's been an angel," she replied. "We watched some cartoons, played with her toys, and she even took a little nap. Easy-peasy." she leans her shoulder against the door ,”Honestly,I’m great with kids.” both Bradley and Beatrice looked over at her with their brows up, “Listen,I babysit Amelia when aunt Penny had to work…I’ve never eaten so many hot pockets in my life. It was great. But anyway!” she claps her hands, “The dinner! With the Haltons! How was it??”
Rooster and Beatrice exchanged a glance, sharing a silent communication before Rooster spoke up. "Well," he began, "it was... interesting."
“Ooohh! Gossip” Shells looked ready to burst, “Inside! Quickly!I wanna hear everything!”
They tried to hesitate, but Shells just pushed them into her living room.Shells plopped down on the couch, clapping her hands together again, then tenting them in front of her mouth and patted the space next to her for Rooster and Beatrice to sit. "Spill the tea, you two," she said eagerly. "I wanna know everything."
Rooster chuckled at Shells' enthusiasm as they took their seats, Beatrice carefully cradling Nicole in her arms. "Well," Rooster began, "where do we even start?"
Beatrice picked up where he left off, her expression a mix of amusement and bewilderment. "It was... quite the evening," she said, "starting with the fact that they insisted on making the dinner reservation for us, at Oda."
Shells raised an eyebrow, pressing her fingers against her lips "Yeah that you guys told me. Weird, why would they make the reservation for you?"
"That's what we wondered," Rooster replied with a wry smile. "But when we got there, it turned out they had a private dining area reserved just for us. It was... fancy, alright."
Beatrice nodded in agreement. "The table was covered in crisp white linen, there were elegant floral arrangements, and they had an expensive bottle of sake waiting for us," she added. “And they…you know, said we’d probably never be able to afford something like that.”
Shells' eyes rolled so hard they could almost see the back of her brain "Wow," she said. "And they are snobbish too? Shocker"
Beatrice couldn't help but chuckle at Shells' reaction. "You have no idea," she replied. "They were... quite the characters."
Rooster leaned back in his seat, one arm draped over the backrest as he continued, "They also seemed really interested in our personal lives. Too much, way too much.”
Shells raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "That's... invasive," she commented. "What did you guys tell them?"
Beatrice exchanged a glance with Rooster before answering, "Well…you know, we did…what we had to do.”
“Bea gave them a scare.” he replies instead, chest puffed,he’s so proud of her. “You should’ve seen it Shells. She…was amazing, she grilled them then and there, it was so incredible.”
Shells leaned forward, mouth parting so much it was like she’d split in two. "Spill the details," she urged. "Spill it! Spill it!What did you say, Bea?"
Beatrice cleared her throat, a hint of pride in her voice. "I may have mentioned that we knew the owner of the restaurant," she began, her tone casual but loaded with significance. "And that we'd been to Oda before."
Shells' eyes practically sparkled with intrigue. "Oh, that's good," she said, leaning back with a satisfied grin. "You gave them a taste of their own medicine."
“And???”
“And…well…” Beatrice blushed, “I…I did tell them they were being invasive and rude and…and yeah, those things.”
Shells erupted into laughter at Beatrice's description. "That's fantastic!" she exclaimed. "I wish I could've seen their faces. You really told them off, Bea!" she leans close to shake Beatrice’s shoulder, “You are badass, don’t be embarrassed!!”
Rooster couldn't help but grin, his pride for his wife evident. "Yeah, it was a sight to behold," he added. "Bea was like a force to be reckoned with."
Beatrice couldn't help but blush at the praise, a shy smile tugging at her lips. "I just didn't want them prying into our personal lives," she said. "It felt like they were digging for something, and I didn't want to give them the satisfaction."
Shells leaned back with a satisfied sigh, snapping her fingers with approval. "Well done, both of you," she said, her tone appreciative as she leans back on her seat. "It sounds like you handled a tricky situation with grace...I’d’ve just punched them."
Rooster shrugged modestly. "We did what we had to do," he replied. "But it wasn't the most comfortable dinner, that's for sure."
Shells tilted her head, her expression curious. "Did they say anything else? Anything about why they invited you over?"
Beatrice exchanged another look with Rooster before answering. "They claimed they wanted to know us better but…," she said, her tone skeptical. "But it all felt a bit...off."
Rooster nodded in agreement. "Yeah," he added, "it was like they were trying to assert some sort of dominance or superiority. And they kept bringing up our financial situation, which was just bizarre."
Shells leaned forward, her curiosity getting the better of her as she brings her knee up to her chin, propping it on the bone. "Do you think they have some sort of ulterior motive?" she asked. "Like, are they trying to gain something from this dinner?"
Beatrice glanced at Rooster, her expression troubled. "It's hard to say," she replied, "but something about the whole situation just felt...wrong."
Rooster nodded in agreement. "Yeah," he said, “Something felt really off. I have no idea if they…will do anything else, you know?
Shells tapped her chin thoughtfully as she listened. "Well, if they do have some ulterior motive," she began, "we need to be prepared. They sound like the kind of people who might not take kindly to being rebuffed."
Beatrice nodded in agreement. "That's what worries me," she said. "I don't want any trouble, but I also don't want them meddling in our lives."
“I personally think Bea scared them,” Shells says, ‘Because she rarely gets mad and when she does,” a low whistle and a shake of her head, “My bestie can be vicious. But!” and she holds up her finger, “But, I’m just curious, that’s not going to give Rooster any issues right? I mean, both you and uh, the guy are pilots.”
Rooster looked relaxed when he replies. "No,not really," he added, "He can have relatives as the higher ups but he can’t do that. He can’t meddle with me…because I can always say that they were the ones meddling."
Shells nodded in understanding. "That's good," she said, her tone supportive. "I mean, just make sure to document everything, just in case. You never know with people like them." she smiles, “Maybe with those tiny hidden pen cameras.”
“That’s illegal Shells.”
“Booooring.” the blonde replies, placing her hands behind her head, “But I guess you are right.”
Rooster chuckled, scratching his temple. "Yeah, maybe no hidden cameras," he said with a grin. "But we'll definitely keep a close eye on things. The last thing we need is any drama or trouble."
Beatrice added, "And I'm not afraid to stand up for us if they try anything."
Shells grinned and clapped her hands together. "That's the spirit!" she exclaimed. "You two are a force to be reckoned with, and I have no doubt you'll handle this situation just fine….and if you don’t,” she makes a ‘call me’ gesture “I’m one call away, ready to beat someone’s ass to oblivion.”
Rooster chuckled at Shells' offer of assistance, as unhinged as it was. "Thanks, Shells," he said with a warm smile, "but let's hope it doesn't come to that. We'll do our best to handle it peacefully."
Beatrice nodded in agreement. "Yeah," she added, "we'd rather avoid any confrontations if possible."
Shells leaned back in her chair, her expression bored . "I get it," she said. "But just remember, you've got people who care about you and have your back. So don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything."
Rooster and Beatrice shared a grateful look, appreciating Shells' friendship and loyalty. "We won't forget that," Rooster replied, “Anyway, gorgeous,” he turns to Bea and Nikki, who was now fast asleep on her mother’s shoulder, “We better go home, someone, is really tired.”
He gently reached out to touch Nikki's soft cheek, trying his best to not wake her up in any way. "She's had quite the day," he whispered, his voice filled with tenderness. "Let's get her home and tucked into bed. We had a long night too."
Beatrice nodded, carefully cradling Nikki in her arms as they prepared to leave Shells' place, standing up with Rooster’s hand on her lower back. "Thanks for having us over, Shells," she said, "And for taking care of Nikki…and for being such a great friend."
Shells waved away their thanks with a grin. "Oh, you two, making me all mushy inside" she replied. "Don’t thank me and remember I'm just a call away if you need anything." She opened the door for them and watched as they walked out, waving at a sleeping Nikki "Sweet dreams, little one."
With Nikki safely in her mother's arms, Rooster and Beatrice said their goodbyes and made their way back to their car. They carefully placed Nicole on her seat, thankfully their daughter was a heavy sleeper because she just dropped her head to the side, the cap sliding down in front of her eyes as she slept.
Beatrice blinked when Rooster pulled it off her face, looking back only to see him folding the cap and shoving it in his back pocket, “Roos.’ she smiles confusedly, “What are you doing?”
“She needs to watch some Phillies’ games.” he even gave the Dodgers’ cap an ugly look, “That’s good stuff.”
Beatrice chuckled, standing straight from checking on Nikki so she could go back to her seat. She waits until he’s inside to finally focus on him. "You really are turning her into a little Phillies fan, aren't you?" she teased, buckling her seatbelt.
Rooster grinned, leaning over to give Beatrice a quick peck on the lips. "Gotta start 'em young," he quipped, starting the car and pulling out of Shells' driveway. "Besides, she'll thank us when she's older."
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, hell yeah, might get her a jersey or something.”
Nicole slept soundly in her car seat, blissfully unaware of the world outside, unaware about her father’s plan. Rooster couldn't help but glance at her through the rearview mirror, “She sleeps like a rock.”
Beatrice smiled, turning her head around as she watched their daughter sleep. "She's our little stone baby," she said softly, "She’s great like that." her eyes slowly go back to Rooster and she sighs, settling back on her seat, “...we just need the twins to come back home, then it’ll be great.”
“They’ll be back soon, gorgeous.” he replies as he stops at the red light, supporting his elbow on the window as he waits, “You remember what they said at the NICU,right?”
Beatrice nodded, her eyes moving to the side as she looked out of the window. "Yeah," she replied, her voice filled with hope. "The doctors said Gavin and Aurora are making good progress, and they might be able to come home in a month." She paused, "I just want that to be the thing we should worry about. Not…other people, you know?"
The city lights twinkled beyond the car window as Rooster continued to drive through the familiar streets, the soft hum of the engine filling the silence between them. Beatrice's thoughts mirrored his own, drifting to their twins and the dinner they had with the Haltons.
“...yeah,” he says finally, jaw unclenching as the lights turn green, “I feel the same way about that, gorgeous. I really do.”
