20 weeks (and now 4 days). Halfway point with this beauty. I waited to post an update until after her big anatomy scan. She is growing perfectly. Ten fingers and ten toes all accounted for. The doctor came in beaming and joyously announced that not only is she perfect she is a whopping 14oz already!! I can feel her moving like crazy. If Ginger Rogers were reincarnated as a boxer I think that would be our girl. She is growing so big and strong that @v1adzi11a was able to feel her kicking already. Her heartbeat is strong, her brain, heart, lungs, organs, and all her parts and pieces are perfect. And now we grow! I am in good shape and having few issues so far. Vlad and I are ecstatic and drinking in every moment as slowly as we can. Thank you so much to everyone that has reached out and checked on us. We got to see baby today and couldn’t be more excited about her arrival this fall! She is growing beautifully and was soo active! She flipped a few times, gave lots of kicks and karate chops while the tech was trying to get photos of her, because of that it did take a bit more time than expected...but that just meant I got to see her for a little while longer. Before we knew it, it was the end of January which meant one thing - time to get the keys to our house! We had decided that this would be when we would do our 'social media' announcement of our pregnancy. Because we had already lived together for over two years we had almost everything we needed for the house, but we decided to get a new door matt, which had three footprints on it. For the photo we used the matt with a his, hers and baby pair of Dr Martens placed over the footprints. We then used a light box with our due date, a framed photo of our 20 week scan and a super cute baby bottle filled with hand made origami stars that I was given as a leaving gift. What brought me here? Years of feeling like I had to be a good girl and having to hide my strength or not know where to put it. I realised that I could be strong and kind, I didn't have to be strong and aggressive. I guess I am still at a fairly personal part of my journey, still in the throes of newish motherhood and feeling so emboldened by the tirade of hurt that I have witnessed. Our next scan was at 20+2 weeks. We were again amazed at how much she had grown in only 2 weeks. She kept making us laugh, because for each check they needed to do she would move into an awkward position. During the check for the upper lip she kept bringing her hand up to her face and covering her mouth and nose. Because we know that gender scans are never 100% we asked the technician to confirm the gender again. Because of the hand on face situation the technician decided to try and check the gender, only to discover that bub had moved her other hand down between her legs so she couldn't do that check either. 20 week scan

I’m starting to get concerned about how people are briefed on screening choices. Your 20 week scan is a detailed anomaly scan. It looks at baby’s organs in detail to look for conditions, some of which may need surgery or may not be compatible with life. This scan could lead to you having to make some tough decisions yet it is seen as ‘the one we find out if it’s a girl or boy.’ I don’t know if this is positive thinking or if people genuinely don’t know this scan is a form of screening and should be treated as such. Are people making an informed choice?

“The Quiet Room”

I am still lying on the scanning table and me and Niall are holding on to each other so tightly. I can’t now look at the screen infront of me to see you baby, I just know deep down this doesn’t end well. The senior sonographer, who has probably known of me all of my life, touches my leg. She says “I am so sorry, I agree with XXX there does seem to be a problem with babies heart - we will get the referrals sorted for you” HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING. HOW CAN I NOT KNOW FOR 20 AND A HALF WEEKS THAT YOU ARE NOT WELL.  We leave the scanning room and I nip into the loo next door. I know I am wailing out loud but I can’t stop it. Everyone outside can hear me. I leave the room and I’ve made an excited couple waiting to be scanned look like ghosts. The girl has started to cry.  We are ushered into the quiet room and I ring my mum screaming something incoherent about coming to the hospital. I ring my dad and do the same.  We are in shock. Pale, shaking, sick, crying. I am having a hot sweat and fling the fire doors open. We are in here forever. The sonographer has since spoken to us and said “I am sorry to ask but would you like to take the photos” I look at her bemused... why would we not want the photos? This is only going to be a minor problem right? So why would we not want the photos of our perfect baby who is going to be okay after a second opinion and some further tests. You just can’t see it properly.  Then common sense prevails. Would we like the photos of our baby who is probably going to be gravely unwell or would this be too upsetting? And no, sadly, you have not got the images wrong. You are both very highly qualified professionals but we really wish right now you were so shit at your job and couldn’t see it properly.  A midwife comes in and gives us an appointment for the following day with a fetal medicine specialist. This has all gotten so out of control. She decides to take some bloods from me to test for any weird and wonderful infections “for next time” - what do you mean for next time. Everyone has given up on this baby already and I can tell...
