From the inbox, #9, special edition - Destiel fic reccing Now and Then
Hi! First of all, your blog is absolutely wonderful! I wish there were a billion more like it for all pairings and fandoms lol. Do you know of any other good supernatural rec blogs?
As long as there were destiel fics, there were also dedicated fic reccers. Some stayed with fandom longer, some moved on faster, so, now we have a mix of active blogs and archived blogs. Here’s small collection of destiel fic rec resources that I’ve come across on tumblr. This is by no means a definite list and you are welcome to add your own resources in the notes! Let’s keep fic reccing craft alive and diverse!
Destiel Fic reccing NOW, currently active blogs in 2023
@profoundbondfanfic - an active and prolific destiel fic rec blog with dedicated mod team. Follow them on tumblr and have a rec every day!
@destielficbasket - a blog that reblogs a wide variety of destiel fic rec posts from other Tumblr blogs. All goods in one place!
@deancasfanficrecs - destiel fic recs and fic rec reblogs, lots of posts to chose from!
@destieltaggedfic - blog full of original themed fic rec posts, sorting destiel fics from different angles.
@mixtapebookclub - a tumblr blog for destiel fic podcast. Thematic podcasts and fic rec lists at the same time. There is also a Mixtape Book Club AO3 collection for your convenience.
@cocklesdestielfiction - what it says on the tin! They have destiel, but they also have cockles recs and gif sets. Check them out!
@destieltropecollection - a very unique blog that collects themed self recs from the authors. Check out their neatly organized Master List Collection 2017-2022 or follow them to get the latest Destiel Trope Collection 2023 rec lists every day in May.
The Destiel Fan Survey Favs Collection on AO3 contains 2793 fics and 668 bookmarked fics that were chosen by destiel readers in several fic surveys organized by destiel writer @unforth. Check out this vast collection of reader choice fics!
Destiel Fic reccing THEN
@destielmybeatingheart-deactivated - what to say, this was the main blog for destiel fic rec back in the day. Unfortunately, the mod left fandom and later took down the blog and, with it, all their fic rec posts. See this post to appreciate what we used to have. In coming weeks, @destiel-fic-rec-lists will continue to reblog available destielmybeatingheart’s rec lists with updated links to AO3 when possible. You can find them under #creator: destielmybeatingheart tag.
ask about other spn blogs like ours - this is 10 years old ask and a lot of blogs here are not active anymore or full of dead links, but if they are up, you can still browse them. The list includes some non spn fic rec blogs as well.
@deancasfix - destiel fic rec blog, reviews, rec lists and asks, last update May, 2020.
@deancasfanficnet - a blog to promote destiel fic writers, various posts, last update April, 2020.
@destiel-fics-for-you - destiel fic rec blog, reviews, rec lists and asks, last update June 2016.
Last but not least, don’t forget to browse our destiel fic challenge master post Where Is Destiel Fic In 2022 and occasionally check out @destiel-fic-rec-lists blog for fic rec lists made by other fans. (hint - all reblogs are tagged with their creator’s urls, so you can easily find their other posts on the blog)
Support and cherish your local fanfic reccer. You never know when you’ll need their help to find your next favorite fic!
Destiel fanworks on AO3 - 111,567 (May 8, 2023)
You can find previous From The Inbox posts here.

reading update: December edition
hi all! while I already did my roundup for every book I read in 2022 and included the books I read in December, they still haven't gotten their own special little recap because the last few days of 2023 were crazy hectic and I didn't have the time. now that I'm back in the office (barf, gag) with hours to kill, let's rewind and look at the year's last batch of books!
what I read:
The End of Policing (Alex S. Vitale, 2017) - excellently concise and thorough breakdown of why policing simply is not beneficial or even practical for the communities it allegedly serves. strongly recommend, I highlighted so much.
Glitterati (Oliver K. Langmead, 2022) - a book that was so infuriatingly close to being one of my favorite books of the year, until it shot itself in the dick in the last quarter. Glitterati starts out as a Vantablack-dark comedy absolutely skewering ultrawealthy celebrity influencer paparazzi aesthetic culture, and for most of the way Langmead does an admirable balancing act making out protagonist, Simone, utterly reprehensible in his alienation from anything human and sincere while also making clear that Simone and people like him are fundamentally hollow, miserable shells. (one detail that sticks with me so clearly is the mention that Simone loved playing the cello, but gave it up because he was too afraid of getting calluses.) when I say that Langmead fumbled massively by (spoilers) writing a happy ending pseudo-redemption arc for Simone I'm not saying that out of some asinine belief that it's Morally Wrong to show bad people growing and changing because that encourages readers to emulate their bad behavior; I just think this novel really seemed like it had something to say and then balked at the last minute in order to conform to a more conventional narrative structure. it's disappointing, reader. I'm disappointed.
Bruce Wayne: Fugitive (Greg Rucka et al, 2002) - Fugitive isn't as strong as the preceding Murderer by a country mile - it feels much less tightly organized, and meanders on a bit too long - but frankly all of that is worth it for a scene of Bruce Wayne sincerely apologizing to his family for being an insufferable bitch who's unpleasant to be around 99% of the time. while I was reading Murderer I made a post about how I can't fuck with much of Batfamily fanon and Wayne Family Adventures-style writing that posits the Bats as generally well-adjusted, endlessly supportive, and excruciatingly aware of their various troubles, and I think this is why: the moments of emotional vulnerability feel so much more satisfying when they're extracted from a rotten mess of misunderstandings rather than the default.
Even Though I Knew the End (C.L. Polk, 2022) - C.L. Polk is one of those authors who has my attention immediately whenever they drop something new, and this novella did NOT disappoint. a crisp and stylish noir murder mystery following a lesbian couple navigating the forces of heaven and hell through mid-century Chicago, this story begs to be devoured in a single sitting.
Interview with the Vampire (Anne Rice, 1976) - I wanted to like this book so much, and I do like parts. but the high highs are contrasted with low lows, and sometimes Louis' incessant whinging had me skimming for pages at a time. I'm afraid that my love of morbidly depressed bisexual vampires with complicated family dynamics won't be enough to keep me reading, Anne.
The Sandman: A Game of You (Neil Gaiman et al, 1991) - this isn't my personal favorite Sandman arc, but I think it is maybe the most iconic and honestly? deserved for Wanda alone. much like Season of Mists, there's a compelling point to be made here that some of the best Sandman stories are the ones with as little of the actual Sandman as possible. love the grumpy bastard, but sometimes you need a nice long break from his shit.
America Is Not the Heart (Elaine Castillo, 2018) - a last minute entry that stole my whole heart. you may recall me absolutely swooning over Castillo's essay collection, How to Read Now, that was released earlier this year, and I'm so glad I decided to seek out her novel so promptly. America Is Not the Heart is a gorgeous coming of age for a 30-something doctor from the Philippines remaking her life after being released from a prison camp and moving to California to live with her uncle's family. she bonds with her baby cousin, she develops a big fat crush on the local faith healer's granddaughter, she remembers how to have friends. it just painfully beautiful in a lot of ways and got me so good; I can't recommend it enough.
White Tears/Brown Scars: How White Feminism Betrays Women of Color (Ruby Hamad, 2020) - a lightning-fast, brilliantly organized read that dives DEEP into the impact of racist colonial laws around the globe and how they contribute to misogynoir and other forms of racialized misogyny today. there's a particular motherlode of information about the sexual politics of interracial sex under colonialism and slavery - the dehumanization of Black and brown women considered perpetually sexually available to white men, the demonization of Black and brown men seen as sexual threats to white women and white supremacy by extension, the difficulties of knowing if any interracial relationship could truly be considered consensual under such conditions. I've got several books on the intersection of sex, sexuality, and racism on my to-read list for the year, and this felt like as good a place as any to start.
what I'm reading now:
Jade Legacy (Fonda Lee, 2021) - I'm so excited for the conclusion of the Green Bone Saga, even though this book is like 700+ goddamn pages long. I truly cannot extend enough thanks to the person who ruined my reading poll by doing the exact thing I told everyone not to do and complaining about one of the options; it made me read Jade City immediately and I've loved every second of the series since.
Shit Cassandra Saw (Gwen E. Kirby, 2022) - very cool short story collection, one of my favorite covers ever
what's next:
Catwoman: Lonely City (Cliff Chiang, 2021) - Cliff Chiang's striking art was one of my favorite parts of Paper Girls, and I'm beyond excited to see his illustrations for a one-last-heist story about Selina Kyle
Where It Rains in Color (Denise Crittendon, 2022) - splashy new sci-fi and one of the only 2022 releases that I couldn't get my mitts on before the year was over!
Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution (R.F. Kuang, 2022) - I'm going to be so real: I've had R.F. Kuang's Poppy War series sitting on my TBR forever and wasn't in any particular hurry to get around to it, but seeing white bookstagrammers complaining about this book's """"reverse racism""" made me more interested in reading it than literally any actual marketing campaign could have.

2023 My Year In Fic
2023 Fiction Word Count:
285333 / 478128 words. 60% done!
Insights To Not Forget:
Dealing with what I can write in an hour: I established 600 words as my daily word count back in 2017, but didn't start tracking how long I wrote during a day until 2018. So I focused my math on 2018 - 2023. 2018 was the only year in which I had reached an hour of writing on average until this year 2023 so far when my average time is an hour and thirty minutes. But I only had 185 days of reaching or exceeding 600 words, so that spreadsheet broke down my average words per hour at 581.
For 2019 - 2021, my time writing per day dropped significantly: 47 minutes, 36 minutes, and 50 minutes. The days of reaching or exceeding 600 words also dropped (49, 48, 85) and average words per hour dropped too (451, 390, 584). I haven't gone back to look at what I was working during those years, but just from the statistic summaries I'm looking at it is clear that I either didn't write most days of the year or if I did it was way under an hour. 2022 is an outlier from the earlier years. The total days of reaching or exceeding was 113, but my average words per day was 1309 and the average writing time went up to 58 minutes per day. So the average words per hour calculated to 1363 that year.
Now to glance back at My Year in Fic posts to see what was going on.
2022: The new words that were not Library updating words only equaled 132,008. I wrote or editing 311 out of 365 days. Also in making new words easier, this was the first year I said I was going to work on one project a month and that was a success. My three void babies joined my house and life at the end of July. 2021: Ah, the fun with getting Scrivener 3 up and running and the laptop not having enough space. That was no fun. Continuing Covid not-fun times. Hurricane Ida made landfall. And Trigun outlines took over my brain. 2020: Covid plague! I spent all of August and September editing and just editing. 2019: Actually list of accomplishements is pretty good. We had my parents' anniversary cruise in October before Mom's surgery. And then she spent the entire month of Novemember in two hospitals and a rehab facility. 2018: I increased the number of days reaching or exceeding 600 words to 105 days out of 365. Looks like I overwhelmed myself with "WRITE ALL THE THINGS" on original fiction and barely did anything on the two projects I had going then to work on fanfics instead.
So can I write 600 words in an hour? No. My time so far this year is an average of writing for an hour and thirty minutes and the words per hours are 581. And another thing 600 words is my daily goal that my brain weasels twisted over to only take an hour. I have all day to get to it, but I shouldn't look at changing it until I have 365 days of reaching 600.
Stories I Posted at Ao3 Finally:
Tin Man / Medical Investigation: Alchemy: Word count = 30,166. A mysterious illness suddenly puts DG in charge and she seeks help where no one in the O.Z. expected her to. Written for TM Challenge 4th Annual Big Damn Challenge. Cross-posted on LiveJournal, FanFiction.Net, and the BookWorm's Library on June 29, 2011. The character Maggie Connor was created by ErinM_4600 for her story You Ever Wonder Why?, and used with permission. The character Margo Whitney was created for my Biker Mice From Mars: Evil Jack series of fanfics.
Nonestic Tales: What Memories Can Bring: Word count = 3237. Now I see you standing with brown leaves falling around and snow in your hair. Now you're smiling out the window of that crummy hotel over Washington Square. Our breath comes out white clouds, mingles and hangs in the air. Speaking strictly for me, we both could have died then and there. This story was finished on June 4, 2009, cross-posted at FanFiction.net on July 13, 2009, and the BookWorm's Library on March 20, 2010, and is the first of the Nonestic Tales series. “Diamonds and Rust” by Blackmore’s Night was an inspiration song.
Nonestic Tales: Pirates of the Nonestic: Word count = 112,914. Away from the familiar O.Z., the runaway Princess and the Tin Man join Captain "Blood-rage" Betsy Bobbins' quest and cross swords with sullen pirates, the navy out to stop Bobbins, and a legendary evil lurking in the Nonestic Ocean. This story was finished on May 17, 2009, cross-posted at FanFiction.net and the BookWorm's Library on March 30, 2010, and is the second of the Nonestic Tales series.
Nonestic Tales: Making Whole: Word count = 6,835. Lovers at odds seem to end up in Wonderland, but does this realm have a way to give Azkadellia what she wants no matter how hard Ambrose objects?
Stories I Posted:
Sororal Lineality: Miha: Word count = 3,129. Biggs Darklighter arrives back at the Fleet and finds out what happened to Luke Skywalker from a new defector, Mara Jade.
Stories I Finished:
A lot of writing this year, but haven't finished a first draft of anything.
Stories Caught Up in Editing:
Star Wars: Rescue the Farmboy: Mission on Mimban: Word count = 61,146. I have finished sending it through the ProWriting Aid program, but I found out I didn't create the Honoghran words one scene needed. So I got started on that and didn't get it finished.
Stories I Didn't Finish:
Trigun: Three of a Kind: Word count = 203,308 (20,838 written in 2022 + 182,470 written in 2023). This story has so many words! I really would like to reach the end.
Strix: Forget the Sun: Word count = 75,604 (26,588 written previously + 4279 written in 2019 + 279 written in 2020 + 15,328 written in 2021 + 5416 written in 2022 + 23,714 written in 2023). I only worked on it for National Novel Writing Month in November, but I joined Rachael Herron's NaNo accountability group and with permission to just flood the narrative with all the stupid thoughts in my head, and I got the highest word count on this narrative in five years! It's still not done, but I'm in the third act setting up for the climax fight.
Sherok (Martian language): Word count = 8258. I think I'm done with creating this language. What I have left is defining the words I have created.
Honoghran: Word count = 604. I finally have a question should I ever meet Timothy Zahn. "Did you have any rules for the apostrophe usage in Honoghran or did you decide every other word needed one to look pretty?" We have them in titles, in proper names, in clan names, in at least one verb that we know is a verb, and then these three words in the two sentences in Dark Force Rising that I don't know what they are. In serious conlanging though, I think the ones in titles are substituting for "of the."
ush = clan/clans
Ary'ush = Savior of the Clans
Mal'ary'ush = Daughter of the Savior of the Clans
For the clan names, I'm thinking that what is behind the apostrophe is a directional marker of where the clan was from before the destruction of Honoghr. For proper names, maybe part of the name is named after someone famous or in honor of. Since the firstchild, secondchild, thirdchild is actually child, grandchild, and great-grandchild, I don't think they have a bunch of numbered Juniors running around. With this thought, I believe in a generation or two after the events in the Last Command, the Noghri will have a bunch of "word'rukh" or "Rukh'word" kids running around. And that's as far as my conlanging got with this one.
What I Think About My Stories:
My favorite story this year: Trigun: Three of a Kind has been so much fun, I have sneaked writing it into months that I haven't supposed to be working on it.
Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I don't really feel any of the stories fit this one. Especially when I have posted such little new material.
Most fun story: Trigun: Three of a Kind.
Stories I wrote that I never thought I'd write: I really didn't think I need to conlang an already created language, but here I am with the amusing idea to do that and confuse a nasty Imperial. And people say fanfic doesn't challenge a writer as much as original fiction does.
Hardest story to write: Less a story and more sticking to the plan for the year. I generally kept to my month-per-project goal, but loss what I was supposed to be working on with the computer problems and when I was supposed to switch.
Biggest disappointment: My paying job's firewall messed up Ao3 displaying, so I had to stop uploading stories to Ao3 unless I was at home. And for some reason when July rolled around to finish uploading, I forgot to finish them. Also my desktop computer's hard drive died and I ended up not doing more updates to the BookWorm's Library in August.
Biggest surprise: Strix: Forget the Sun during National Novel Writing Month in November. I MADE WORDS! on everyday but one in November. Here is what I shared on Rachael Herron's Slack channel:
31,855/50,000 is where I'm calling it now The total added to the messy, messy narrative is 23,714 getting me to setting up all the characters for the big battle of the climax. And I just checked my records, this is the most words I have added to it in FOUR YEARS! The only day I didn't do any writing was the 25th and that day was spent driving back home from the Thanksgiving celebration over 4.5 hours away. Even with the trip, I kept plugging away at this and didn't put it aside for a different WIP. That is all thanks to the support here. I've been keeping metrics posts for that kind of analysis later. One thing I noticed was having permission to jump around. Not that I needed permission, but I'm a very linear writer. So previously when I'd bog down in a scene and words would freeze, I'd keep throwing myself at with less and less results. This year and Rachael's writing messy mantra finally took hold, and instead of dropping the whole novel when I hit a block, I moved to a new scene and words gushed. Don't know what this means for the character who always gave me the blockages yet.
What's your favorite piece of dialogue you wrote this year? What's your favorite piece of description or narration you wrote this year? Both come from this part of Trigun: Three of a Kind:
“Quiet, Punisher. I’m tired of balancing your divided loyalties.”
Wolfwood spun the cross off his back and the cloth unwrapped from around it. His right hand tucked into a hole in the center of it as he shifted his left leg back and pointed the long end at the Gung-Ho Guns. The metal split apart, showing a gun barrel in the center. It spit out bullets with sparks and smoke, and Wolfwood used them to draw a line of bullet holes at the Gung-Ho Guns’ feet. They all danced back, including Bluesummers.
“Mamajamming! That’s bigger than Uncle Vinnie’s bazooka!”
Everyone ignored Chuck to stare at Wolfwood. He smirked back at them. “I’ve picked a side, but you’re still going to have to deal with me.”
Bluesummers narrowed his eye and twitched his outstretched fingers.
Wolfwood dropped the muzzle of his cross gun to the floor as his body bent back like Milly-ma’am.
Bluesummers smirked briefly. “And you actually thought you’d be a deterrent. Gray the Ninelives, punish the traitor.”
The huge guy in brown gladiator armor lurched forward, reaching for the man in the black suit. This fit Hannah’s rule close enough. Chuck pulled out the blaster, aimed up at the big guy, and pulled the trigger. “Eat blaster, dome head!”
The blaster bolt hit Gray the Ninelives right on the brown collar that started right under the eyes of the dome and ended at the pecs as the armor went around those muscles. And the collar and the flesh-colored dome popped off Gray’s shoulders like a bottle cap when Uncle Modo opened a root beer bottle. The face underneath was made of brown metal but no mouth, just twelve slits around the bottom for escaping heat. The blue eyes were reflectors, not eyeballs. The brown metal didn’t make a full skull and green metal circuit boards looked like a brain out of the forehead.
Chuck blinked. “More like chrome head. You’re a robot!”
“You are the most troublesome child,” Bluesummers said with a weary growl.
“Every day all day long!” Chuck guessed he was too old for ‘troublesome tot’ that Limburger called him a lot.
Gray the Ninelives recovered from losing his disguise and reached for Wolfwood again.
Chuck grinned and leaped onto the massive arm. He ran up to Gray’s shoulder as the robot straightened and tried to grab him instead. Chuck ducked behind the head, grabbing hold of the edge of brown metal at the boundary of the computer brain. “Aooow! Hannah’s gonna be so jelly. She thinks she’s the only one who can rage against machines!”
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would, less, or about what you predicted? Honestly, less than I thought I would. I didn't anticipate getting caught up in conlanging and I didn't anticipate the computer issues that made me go "whelp, work on what has been working last month" and usually keep on writing Trigun: Three of a Kind. I'm not begrudging my words, I just thought I'd touch more projects.
Number of Days I Wrote or Edited: 333 days.
Number of Days Meeting or Exceeding the daily 600 word count: 185 days.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? I made myself accountable to more people for original fiction and having people I didn't want to disappoint and letting myself throw utter crap on the page where it would count did unlock progress there. I also didn't stick with linear writing when a scene locked up on me but jumped to a different scene and got words.

Christmas Week Update
This week has been very chill.
Everyone else is already on their Christmas/Year-end break (clearing leaves), so even work doesn’t feel like work.
But despite being chill my anxiety will still sneak in from time to time, it’s that productivity demon, the need to constantly be productive is indeed a modern predicament. We are so deep into the hustle culture that it feels wrong to be relaxing, it feels wrong to not be on edge and to chase the next deadline, to worry about things that are beyond your control.
However, I think this year, especially this month I’ve learned to pace myself. I’ve learned to take it day by day more than at any other point in my life, turning 30 did something to me. I can’t wait to write about the turning 30 part and also the “things I’ve learned from xx years” series that I’ve been doing since 2014 if I’m not mistaken, or was it 2013?
Updates on how the past week has been for me, or rather the past couple of months, Nov and Dec. I feel more in touch with my core, my passion, and my purpose. I’ve talked about this before, about having a purpose and how much of a skeptic I was. I’ve never felt as invigorated as I’ve felt this month, and it has to do with the fact that I’ve been writing every day (or almost every day). If I’m not writing, I’ll be editing vlogs.
Yes, I’ve started vlogging finally, officially! I used to always just post them as Snapchats (shoutout to the Snapchat era), and IG stories. I remember posting edits on FB in the past, that was like 2008-2009, I even posted my cover songs, and dancing videos. Those who didn’t know me since that era may not know that I’ve always documented my life that way. I had diaries, I wrote adaptations of my life on Wattpad, I post videos, and record a lot of moments in my life, in different formats.
But I’m doing it more seriously now, I would record and edit properly and learn about content production and get feedback. I haven’t been this personally fulfilled in years, for as long as I can remember as an adult, I rarely felt this way. Even when I was doing well in my career, it never really made me feel as alive as when I am doing what I’m currently doing.
I think the last time I felt as fulfilled was in 2016-2017 when my short story was published by FIXI, an actual publishing house in Malaysia. As a writer, that’s probably the most satisfying thing ever. Then it was just corporate life.
Not shaming corporate life, I am thankful for what it gave me and allowed me to experience, the people that came into my life during that period but I just know in my core this is not something that I am meant to do. I have an Aquarius Midheaven for god sake.
I know I am meant to swim and bask in creativity and creation, I am meant to live life the way my soul wanted to and I’ve been doing that a lot just as I turned 30. I’ve been doing it before that, especially since the start of 2022, but it amplified after the 13th of October.
I would love to admit that I do love my life now, and I am so excited for 2023. I realized being 'Happy' is not the goal here although it feels great, I know that there needs to be balance in our human experience for us to truly live, to truly be able to create and express ourselves, we need to feel it all. I am so looking forward to 2023 with everyone that I love because I can feel a shift and a change happening.

promoting your webcomic
someone messaged me asking for advice on promoting your webcomic and i thought it might be useful to others as well, so here are some pointers! disclaimer, this is just based on my personal experience over the last couple of years, different things work for different people etc.
never shut up about it
if you follow me on twitter, you’ll know that i talk about inhibit all the time. i like to share page wips and character drawings with my readers, but occasionally someone might stumble across them and check out the comic. i make an announcement on twitter and tumblr every time i post a new page, and then bump it a couple of times throughout the day to make sure people dont miss it*. i’ll post an illustration with a link to the comic saying “hey have you read this lately”. at the end of a scene or chapter, i’ll post a link letting people know that it’s a good time to catch up or jump on board. just talk about your comic! don’t put it down! don’t say things like “here’s my comic, it’s not very good but please check it out” because i guarantee i wont!!!! if you dont think it’s good, why should i care about it? you’re your own publicist, so dont hold back!! but also dont spam oh god!!!!! find a happy medium!!!!!!!!
*if youre going to make update announcements, include a link to the comic and some sort of teaser image! make people want to click through! i usually use a panel from that day’s page.
figure out what social media works for you
when i first started inhibit, i posted update notifications on facebook, twitter, and tumblr. i slowly realised facebook wasnt working for me; the view-to-click ratio wasnt worth the effort. so i ditched it and decided to stick solely to twitter and tumblr. you have to find where your audience is and go to them; dont expect readers to make a tumblr account just to follow your blog for news.
engage with readers
you dont have to be everyone’s best friend, but replying to readers’ comments on the site or answering their questions on social media is a nice way to build your audience’s loyalty. it’s always nice to get feedback on something youve worked on, and from a reader perspective, it’s nice to know the creator of a thing you like isnt a jerk! if someone shares fanart with your or just messages you to let them know theyre enjoying the comic, thank them! retweet or reblog it! maybe it’ll encourage someone else to check out your work!
link your comic everywhere
if a potential new reader cant easily find a link, theyre not going to read your comic. very few people will actively search out a hidden link. put it in your tumblr description, your twitter bio, your blog sidebar, your facebook page, whatever, plaster it everywhere. make it super easy for casual readers to find.
participate in community events
there are lots of weekly twitter hashtags where comic creators answer a series of questions and discuss aspects of comic-making. #comicbookhour, #comictalk, and #webcomicchat are just a few of them. in your introduction tweet at the start of every event, put a link to your comic, a brief description, and at least one promotional image or page from your comic. make it easy at a glance to understand what your comic’s about and what it looks like!
if you’re hosting your site on something like comicfury and smackjeeves, get involved on the forums and meet people that way!
things like inktober and hourly comic day are a great way to get involved in the creative community too, ive found a lot of new artists (and therefore, their comics too!) this way. make friends, support each other, be nice; webcomics is a small community. we gotta stick together.
make guest art for other comics
if you have a friend who makes a comic, why not offer to do guest art for them? i absolutely love guest art for two reasons: one, i get to draw something cool for a pal whose work i enjoy. two, free advertising!! and don’t forget to return the favour and let them do guest art for you!
link to other comics
one of my favourite ways to promote other people is to include a link to their work on a “comics i recommend” section of my site. this can be a section on the sidebar or a separate page (mine’s on the extras page) and i personally love checking out comics recommended by people whose work i enjoy. this isn’t really a “how to promote your comic” tip; unless you do a link exchange or something, you cant guarantee someone will put your comic on their site. it’s just a nice thing to do, and it’s nice when someone does link to you! i dunno! i like promoting my friends!!
make a mirror site
if you’re hosting your own site, the only visitors you’re going to get are ones you funnel there yourself. a good way to grow your audience is to upload your comic on a mirror site that has a built-in audience, like webtoon*. this is a great way to tap into a huge market of new readers with very little effort. every time you update, your comic gets bumped to the top of a “just updated” feed, and readers can subscribe for updates so your comic will appear in their list of favourites. ive found mirror sites a great way to connect with readers who might never have found the comic otherwise! however, these sort of sites are very “sticky”; it’s very hard to redirect readers away from these sites onto your main site. still, be sure to include links to all your other social media; i usually include mine at the bottom of each update.
*make sure you know your audience. i originally put inhibit on webtoon as full pages, just like on the main site. however, most webtoon readers use the mobile app, so i adapted the entire comic into a mobile format. i immediately got a lot more readers. i definitely recommend sticking to a panel-by-panel format if you’re going to mirror there! plus, when you hit certain page view milestones, they pay you!
put your comic on TopWebComics
topwebcomics is a site where users can vote daily for their favourite webcomics. stick your comic up there (be sure to include a banner and description) and you can get a decent number of views from people browsing the rankings.
pay for adverts??
if you don’t mind spending a bit of money, project wonderful is a good way to expand your audience. the site takes some getting used to but it lets you bid on advertising spots on other webcomics and sites that might have the audience you’re after. personally, i don’t use adverts, but if it works for you then go for it!
make flyers
if you want to get away from the computer, why not knock up some flyers? your local comic book shop might agree to leave a few on the counter (ive done this at forbidden planet), or bring them to cons to hand out to people. you can get a whole bunch printed cheaply online!
most importantly: don’t expect success overnight
it can be disheartening when you dont feel you’re getting the attention you deserve for the time and effort you’ve invested in bringing your comic to life. but (most) everyone starts off as an unknown. i started posting inhibit in january 2015 and it’s taken me almost three years to get the point im at now. maybe you’ll get super lucky and find an audience immediately, but more likely than not you’ll have to just put in the hours. have fun!! make your comic for yourself first and foremost; when your audience arrives, it’ll just be the icing on the cake.
i hope this helps!! :V
#asks#info#2023 update edit: i made this post in 2017#it is extremely out of date now and stuff like topwebcomics and the hashtag events arent really relevant anymore#so please take everything i say here with a grain of salt!!

Thanks for the tag @hovercraft79 !
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
I have 29 works as of 17/04/2024. Could possibly have another one ready soon 👀
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
I've written 199,256 words (posted) in the last 7 ish years.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Star Wars (mostly the Thrawn trilogies), The Worst Witch (1998, 2017) Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018), Marvel, and Doctor Who.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Loki: The Rewrite, Grievance (Fanart), 101 Ways to Make a Salad, Stay, and Wrath of the Manda'lor
Most of those were posted in 2020, and in Loki's case, 2021.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do respond to comments! It's basic fandom interaction and I love screeching about fics with other people lol. As long as you don't just comment "update now" or something along those lines in a rude way on a fic that's been on the backburner for a wee bit, you won't get a smartass answer :)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Uhhhhhh, I don't know. It's probably all the Whumptober fics I've done though tbh. I meant to do one for 2023 but I'm still working on that because it's an AU and I wanted to do more than just torture my little guys.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Knight In Shining Pink was pretty happy at the end.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not really.
9. Do you write smut?
Haven't posted any, 👀 but it is in my drafts...
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Do I write crossovers? That feels like all I write, so I'll list my favourites:
The Admiral's Witch (Most recent: Worst Witch/Star Wars)
It Looked Alright In the Pictures (Last fic of 2023: Worst Witch/Star Wars)
Shadows On The Night (Worst Witch/Star Wars crossover)
Puppets of Fate (MCU/Star Wars: currently undergoing a rewrite)
As you can see, I like putting TWW17 & 98 characters in certain situations with certain SW characters.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nah. Feel free to though. Just make sure you give me credit and link to the original fic.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yea, a few. Loki: The Rewrite is the first that comes to mind.
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Don't do this to meeee. I'm going to say Obitine (Obi-Wan/Satine) for now bc they popped into my head first.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
Puppets of Fate is going to take me another four years just to get four chapters rewritten at this rate, and I Think My Neighbour's A Witch will probably be the same tbh. I'd rather be happy with what I've written and take yonks than do a rush job without much thought and never be able to sleep at night. Normal things and reactions to that situation... (probably not normal tbh).
16. What are your writing strengths?
Action, I'd say. And whump.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Finishing my wips...also having really long winded sentences. They make sense to me and I do try to chop em down during editing but I also miss a few lol.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've sprinkled Cheunh into my fics where appropriate, so I'd say go for it. Having translations in the notes or making it obvious what's being said in the scene helps a lot though. It sucks reading big passages of something you don't know and then not knowing what any of it means unless you whip the translator out or there's notes.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Tinkerbell. None of those have ever made it to AO3 though and they're shoved to the bottom of my wardrobe in the spiral bound books that 12 yr old me wrote them in.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Eldritch Horror Cackles Academy AU where the castle is alive and hungry. It's unposted and only has three chapters written so far, but love it. It's truly something lmao. I think I had a sketch on this hellsite somewhere that was kind of a teaser for it.
Tagging (no pressure): @wayward-thrawn @empress-violetlight @heathtrash @lorrainestea & anyone else who wants to play :3
Questions to respond to below the cut!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
3. What fandoms do you write for?
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
8. Do you get hate on fic?
9. Do you write smut?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
16. What are your writing strengths?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
19. First fandom you wrote for?
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Writer Asks
I love doing these! They hardly ever come around anymore and I miss these. Thank you @bitchbrisket for sending this my way.
How many works do you have on AO3?
36
What’s your total AO3 word count?
664,309
What fandoms do you write for?
Mostly The Worst Witch 2017, but there’s also a couple of Bletchley Circle fics on there, as well as an unpublished Xena and a Rosemary and Thyme wip.
What are your top five fics by kudos?
Divine
Into the Great Wide Open
One Thing Leads to Another
Ghost
Winter Song
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to always comment. Comments are a gift and I want to recognize the time someone took tell me they liked my work. Plus, I love talking about writing and stories and all that.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Life has enough angst already, I don’t need to add to it with my fics. I much prefer a happy ending. That said, since I’ve left everyone hanging on Stella Caeli for 6 months (I’m so sorry!) and it’s at a disaster cliffhanger, it would be that. I am almost done with the next installment, though, so hopefully soon it won’t be angsty either.
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Maybe Divine? That’s the last part of Hecate’s Summer Playlist. Either that or An Uncertain Spring
Do you get hate on fic?
I haven’t yet.
Do you write smut?
It probably comes as a surprise to most of my readers, but yes. Just not in any of the stuff I’ve written for TWW or posted on AO3
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not really, though I do enjoy letting Rosemary and Thyme make a cameo every now and then. I’m not against them, just haven’t done it.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don’t think so.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I’m aware.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but Sparky probably deserves a co-writing credit for all of the work she’s put in to my fics.
What’s your all-time favourite ship?
This is a toughie. Certainly, Hecate Hardbroom and Pippa Pentangle – or Hecate and Ada Cackle – or Hecate and Julie Hubble. Honorable mentions include Jean McBride and Millie Harcourt, Xena and Gabrielle, Jenny Flint and Madame Vastra, Rosemary and Thyme, Lady Hardcastle and Flo, SuperCorp, Laventon and Cyllene… The list really could go on.
What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
Probably my first fic – a massive crossover with characters from everywhere, a healthy dose of Mary Sue-manship, a bizarre premise that turned out to be not so bizarre when six months or a year after I started it, Galaxy Quest sort of had the main plot point.
What are your writing strengths?
I feel like dialogue is what I do best, followed by plotting.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Action sequences. They feel very stilted to me.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Sure, write it. I've had bilingual characters.
First fandom you wrote for?
Not counting that first atrocity, Xena and Gabrielle – though technically it’s a Mel & Janice one.
Favourite fic you’ve written?
That is like picking a favorite child, isn’t it? Well, I shan’t be in denial about it. Hecate’s Summer Playlist holds a special place in my heart, closely followed by An Uncertain Spring and All Roads Lead to Home.
If you'd like to play, I'll tag @emiline-northeto @curlywitch14 @hydr0phius @cassiopeiasara and anyone else who'd like to join in.

Kirby Translation Docs Masterpost
I was told on Discord I should really compile these somewhere. I may post these directly to Tumblr or WordPress or something eventually, but for now here is a masterpost of links to Google Docs.
These are various documents I've made translation sections of content from the Kirby series.
Please note that I do not consider myself fluent in Japanese, or even a Japanese speaker/able to read/write in Japanese in the first place. At best, consider these a step above some cleaned up machine translations.
𒈯𒈯𒈯
(09/07/2023) Triple Deluxe Miiverse Behind the Scenes Developer Posts, as well as for Drum Dash Deluxe and Fighters Deluxe.
(07/15/2023) All boss pause descriptions and dialogue from Kirby: Triple Deluxe, redone.
(03/11/2023) Return to Dream Land boss pause descriptions, for both Deluxe and Wii
(05/08/2022) Team Kirby Clash Deluxe August 2017 Issue Nintendo Dream Interview with Kumazaki, including info on King D-Mind and the Parallel bosses. Also talks about Planet Robobot and making games as a student.
(04/02/2022) Kirby and the Forgotten Land masterpost.
Master post for Kirby Star Allies: The Original Artbook translations:
𒈯𒈯𒈯
Older Translations
𒈯𒈯𒈯
(08/24/2021 Though apparently I never shared it after I made it until now whoops) Descriptions mentioning Galactic Nova. If anyone can find a scan of the Japanese Super Star Ultra manual's description of Milky Way Wishes, please send me a message or tweet at me @dsgiratina.
(06/07/2021) All Kirby Fighters 2 text.
(06/04/2021) All boss pause descriptions and dialogue from Kirby: Planet Robobot. Note that Kai-alone released his own version of this which I'd recommend trusting over mine, but feel free to use this as a second opinion. Please check that out here.
12/28/2021 Edit: Included the Pres. Haltmann 2.0 description which I forgot, and fixed an error in Galacta Knight's description due to accidentally deleting a character in the Japanese text.
(01/01/2021) All text relating to Another Dimension across all Kirby games. Please note that this is the oldest document, so if these descriptions appear in my later ones above, please check those instead since I might forget (or just out of laziness) to update this doc with better made translations.

Hey, there! I'm Jessi :)
This is my Art Masterlist with links to my art, with posts that you may or may not have seen, such as my Infinity War Rewrite Comic, Morticia Addams as a mermaid, as well as other various fanart and personal art pieces. MTG LANDS FULL ART
Here is a list I made of all collections with full art lands on magic: the gathering.
Finding out all of the Secret Lair Drops was not easy, the official site is horrible because all of them are listed under "secret lair drop" (SLD) instead of their collection-names. My sources were this guy and the mtg secret lair page on the wiki and the Scryfall.com search engine. Thanks a bunch.

FAQ: Workplace 2019 is coming; this is what it's good to know
New Post has been published on https://takenews.net/faq-workplace-2019-is-coming-this-is-what-its-good-to-know/
FAQ: Workplace 2019 is coming; this is what it's good to know
Microsoft final 12 months introduced that there shall be a successor to Workplace 2016, the non-subscription model of the applying suite, and that the improve would ship in a couple of 12 months.
The bundle, named “Workplace 2019,” shall be geared to clients, primarily company clients, “who aren’t but prepared for the cloud,” in accordance with Microsoft.
However aside from that description, Microsoft has been imprecise concerning the prospect of Workplace 2019 with a “perpetual” license, one which lets the shopper run the suite so long as desired with out additional funds. So, we collected among the urgent questions enterprise could have concerning the suite.
Microsoft categorizes software program by how it’s paid for, discriminating between a license that was purchased outright from one that’s basically “rented” as a result of it is paid for over time, like a subscription.
More often than not Microsoft makes use of the time period “one-time buy” to label a software program license that’s paid for with a “single, up-front value to get Workplace purposes for one pc.” The acquisition provides the client the fitting to make use of Workplace in perpetuity. In different phrases, the license has no expiration date, and customers could run the suite so long as they need.
The corporate pegged the launch of the suite in the course of the second half of the 12 months. “This launch, scheduled for the second half of 2018, will embrace perpetual variations of the Workplace apps … and servers,” wrote Jared Spataro, normal supervisor for Workplace, in a September submit to an organization weblog.
Spataro referred to as out “Workplace 2019” on the time because the nameplate for the applying assortment.
No date but, however there are hints sufficient to take a guess.
In late September 2015, Microsoft provided the Home windows version of Workplace 2016 to Workplace 365 clients first, then adopted with retail variations. Workplace 2019 will seemingly seem across the similar time of the 12 months, in that very same order.
Here is why.
Microsoft now points two Workplace 365 ProPlus function upgrades — ProPlus is the usual suite that gives rights to the regionally put in purposes, together with Excel, Outlook and Phrase, for 365 subscribers — yearly. These function upgrades start reaching clients in September and March of every 12 months. (Final Sept. 12, Microsoft issued a function improve, designated 1708, to Workplace 365 ProPlus.)
As a result of the perpetual licensed model of Workplace 2019 shall be constructed from code already launched as Workplace 365 ProPlus — and since a beta of Workplace 2019 will debut in mid-2018 — it is extra seemingly that Microsoft will use the March function improve for Workplace 365 ProPlus subscribers than the September 2018 function improve as the premise for Workplace 2019.
The three months between the March 2018 look of the ProPlus function improve and the July 2018 launch of the Workplace 2019 preview will give Microsoft time to digest suggestions from clients and repair any bugs that floor. The change from Workplace 2016’s beta launch date (Could 2015) to Workplace 2019’s (mid-summer 2018) was most likely essential to accommodate the March function improve timetable; Microsoft did not undertake the Home windows 10-esque function launch schedule for Workplace 365 till after the launch of Workplace 2016 in September 2015.
All Microsoft has to do to declare the purposes delivered to ProPlus subscribers — Phrase, Outlook, and so forth — as formally “Workplace 2019” variations is to rename them. It might do this on Sept. 11, 2018, the seemingly date it would launch that 12 months’s second ProPlus function improve.
Microsoft’s not saying.
The function set will not be revealed till mid-2018, when Microsoft releases a preview of the suite. For his half, Spataro hinted at some of what’s going to make it into Workplace 2019, calling out such options as Ink replay in Phrase and Morph in PowerPoint, which have been obtainable to Workplace 365 subscribers for one and two years, respectively.
And that is vital to recollect.
There’s little to no likelihood that Workplace 2019 will embrace any groundbreaking new options. Why? As a result of the perpetually-licensed model of the suite is constructed by taking the accrued modifications for the reason that predecessor appeared — the modifications issued to Workplace 365 subscribers over the previous a number of years.
Microsoft will take the model of Workplace 2016 that Workplace 365 ProPlus customers have in, say, the spring of 2018 — and that model of Workplace 2016 is completely different than the 2015 model of Workplace 2016 bought as a one-time buy — freeze the code, and name it Workplace 2019.
Microsoft’s not saying. One-time purchases of the present workplace vary from Workplace Skilled Plus 2016 (Home windows) and Workplace Commonplace 2016 for Mac (macOS), the enterprise-grade SKUs obtainable solely through quantity licensing, to retail packages comparable to Workplace Skilled 2016 (Home windows) and Workplace House and Enterprise 2016 for Mac (macOS).
It is sure that Microsoft will provide Workplace 2019 to industrial clients through quantity licensing, however it might be questionable to imagine that it’s going to promote single-copy variations at retail.
Microsoft will, in some unspecified time in the future, discontinue gross sales of Workplace perpetual licenses, analysts have agreed. (Microsoft has made no secret that it prefers subscriptions – Workplace 365 on this case – for the recurring income they generate.) Dumping single-copy one-time purchases could be the logical place to start out decreasing the perpetual choice.
Spataro didn’t say so, however Workplace 2019 will are available in variations for each Home windows and macOS. There could be little purpose to cull the latter, for example, since Microsoft dominates that OS’s productiveness area, too.
One other nice query.
In 2017, Microsoft slashed the rights of customers working non-subscription Workplace when it introduced that perpetual-licensed variations of Workplace 2016 shall be barred from connecting to Microsoft’s cloud-based providers, together with hosted e-mail (Alternate) and on-line storage (OneDrive for Enterprise) after Oct. 13, 2020.
Underneath the brand new guidelines, homeowners of a perpetual license for Workplace 2016 can use these providers solely in the course of the first half of their 10-year assist lifecycle, the portion Microsoft dubs “mainstream.” Workplace 2016’s mainstream assist ends Oct. 13, 2020.
By releasing Workplace 2019 this 12 months, Microsoft will give enterprises a 12 months or so emigrate from Workplace 2016 (or an earlier version) earlier than the cloud service cutoff.
We do not assume so.
Why? Easy: Microsoft is slashing assist for Workplace 2019 by 30%.
Reasonably than the same old decade of assist – the primary 5 in what Microsoft dubs “Mainstream,” the second 5 as “Prolonged,” which supplies security-only updates – Workplace 2019 will get solely seven years.
“Workplace 2019 will present 5 years of mainstream assist and roughly 2 years of prolonged assist,” stated Spataro within the Feb. 1 announcement. “That is … to align with the assist interval for Workplace 2016. Prolonged assist will finish 10/14/2025.”
That is the identical day Workplace 2016’s assist expires.
The simultaneous retirement of the 2 perpetually-licensed suites is the strongest sign but that Microsoft plans to close down the one-time buy choice after Workplace 2019. By shortening 2019’s assist lifespan – one thing Microsoft has <i>by no means</i> performed to Workplace for Home windows – it is going to be capable of wash its fingers of each suites on the similar time, ending the decades-old buying choice and making the subscription-based Workplace 365 the solely strategy to license the purposes.
The late-2025 deadline will let Microsoft promote Workplace 2019 for years – in the course of the Mainstream stretch, most certainly – whereas hedging a couple of successor all through. However it might probably nonetheless give enterprise clients a multi-year heads-up that it is the final of its type (and that these clients want to maneuver to subscriptions).
Sure, that is true. Or perhaps, no, it is not.
Together with its announcement that Workplace 2019’s assist will run out after seven years, Microsoft additionally painted the system necessities with a broad brush. The necessities are considerably extra restrictive than Workplace 2016’s.
In line with Spataro’s Feb. 1 submit, Workplace 2019 shall be supported solely on Home windows 10. No love for Home windows 7 (which retires in January 2020, or a year-and-change after Workplace 2019’s debut) or Home windows Eight.1 (January 2023, 4 years and extra). These two older OSes must be glad with Workplace 2016 (which, once more, does not fall off assist till October 2025).
Spataro didn’t provide an evidence for the assist limitation. Beforehand, like when Microsoft stated that Workplace 2016 couldn’t be used to connect with the corporate’s personal cloud providers after Oct. 13, 2020, it is rationalized the choice by claiming that tying new (Workplace 2019 on this case) applied sciences to outdated (Home windows 7 or Home windows Eight.1) resulted in substandard safety and unimpressive options.
From Microsoft’s perspective, the identical reasoning may very well be utilized to this ruling. The cynical amongst us would as an alternative see it as one other push to maneuver everybody onto Home windows 10 ASAP by limiting the performance of prior editions of Home windows.
However though Microsoft was crystal clear that it will not assist Workplace 2019 on Home windows 7 or Eight.1, there is not any assure that the suite will not essentially run on units powered by these working techniques. For all we all know, Workplace 2019 may go, maybe not completely, on the older OSes. Even when that had been the case, nonetheless, Microsoft can simply bar Workplace safety updates from reaching Home windows 7 or Eight.1 PCs. Traditionally, it has performed precisely that, comparable to when it blocked Home windows 7 techniques from receiving Web Explorer Eight (IE8) safety updates after January 2016.
Uh, no.
When Microsoft means it will not assist Workplace 2019, it actually means it. Together with the no-Workplace-2019-support-on-Home windows-Eight.1 rule, Microsoft additionally put the kibosh on Workplace 365 ProPlus for Eight.1.
“Efficient January 14, 2020, ProPlus will not be supported on … [Windows 8.1 and older],” stated Microsoft’s Spataro. “It will be sure that each Workplace and Home windows obtain common, coordinated updates to supply probably the most safe atmosphere with the newest capabilities.”
In different phrases, three years earlier than Home windows Eight.1’s official retirement date, Microsoft will restrict Home windows Eight.1 to working the perpetual variations of Workplace 2016 or Workplace 2013. (The latter’s assist runs out in April 2023, three months after Home windows Eight.1’s expires.)
Blocking updates to Workplace 365 ProPlus on Home windows Eight.1 seemingly did not make Microsoft blink; the working system accounts for such a small slice of the general Home windows pie. In January, analytics vendor Internet Purposes pegged Home windows Eight’s and eight.1’s mixed person share as about 7.6% of all Home windows editions.
And by the point January 2020 rolls round, Home windows Eight/Eight.1 ought to be underneath 5%, if the decline pattern stays near that of the final 12 months.
