It has been a mighty, mighty, minute since I've tried to host a fic writing challenge, but why not??? What's old is new again, and yadda yadda yadda. Announcing a new challenge: The Logan & Veronica: New Year, New Fic Writing Fest!

We’ll start writing in the first month of the year, and then posting the first week of February. New year! New fic! 

Posting Dates: Wednesday, February 1, 2023 through Tuesday, February 7, 2023

Fic! Fan art! Manips! Playlists! Headcanons! Lists of fic recommendations! We want it all!

To kickoff the first year of this challenge, I thought it'd be fun if we take inspiration from some of the fandom's greatest hits, that is, fics with the most amount of kudos over on AO3.

Please note: I have picked key elements of some of the most kudos'd fics EVER (according to AO3) to inspire these prompts. If you want to do an actual, explicit remix of one of these fics, it's fandom best practice to reach out to the author in advance. Any questions about that distinction? Just send me an ask or a message!

Most importantly: tag everything #2023 LV New Year in the first five tags so all those who love these two idiots can see and track the content. You can also post in the 2023 LV New Year challenge category on AO3.

No time to create? Boy, do I have a suggestion for you! Sometimes fics considered "old" by the fandom can drop off the radar. Why not take the time this week to dole out kudos and/or comments to some older but much loved fics?

Canon divergence, fics inspired by universes you've already created, long one-shots, new multichapters that incorporate each plot - all fic writing formats that are completely on the table!

Day 1: Market Fic - inspired by "A Strange New Story Every Time" by gyzym - Farmer's market? Specialty food store? Mini-market? So many markets...so many possibilities.

Day 2: Non-Linear Storytelling - inspired by "Slipstream" by @cheshirecatstrut. - Any way of telling a story where the events are not told in complete chronological order.

Day 3: Hurt/Comfort and/or Domesticity inspired by "With Me" by @bryrosea and "Same Old Song" by @susanmichelin - You can treat these as two separate prompts, or, as both of these fics do in an expert manner, incorporate them together

Day 4: Epistolary inspired by "Three Emails Sent Across Continents (And Possible Five Text Messages)" by Care and "Wingspan" by @theawkwardterrier - Journals, letters, texts, etc. They can provide the full text or simply feature as one component.

Day 5: Lawyer!Veronica inspired by "A Better Claim" by @best-laid-plaids - She spent all that time and energy on getting that degree - it seems a shame we fic writers don't put it to good use!

Day 6: "I love a man in uniform" inspired by "Metal Under Tension" by @machawicket - Not saying it has to be a military uniform...though that option is, of course, there.

Day 7: s1 canon fix-it or s1 canon divergence inspired by "Sometimes" by @mysilverylining and "Time, Make it Go Faster or Just Rewind" by @kmd0107 - We're all in agreement that s1 is the most complete season of this show, correct? That doesn't mean that the what-if possibilities are in any way limited, though!

About Sam's timeline: it might after all had been last year since he was in US from April until beginning of September. The trip with the dog owner was not from Nevada to Wyoming, it was another route. He talked about it many times.

Then, the dog owner stopped to follow him and all account that were related to him last Spring when the news about the Blonde woman he went with to Miami but then his guys surprised him in his birthday, you know that time it's when she unfollowed. Then a week later she followed him again and started to like his posts and she was in NY at the same time as him but seemed that he was not interested.

I'm sorry but see, the advantage of keeping his timelines is that I can easily refer to what happened when.

Last year he has been shooting TCND. He was in NYC on two separate weeks, one for LA promo after his birthday celebration in Miami (that was last year not this year, as this year he was having a read through at his birthday. The second week he was in NYC was for OL promo. Both times he was seen with Lauren H in NYC.

He was shooting TCND until 14th July 2023 when the wrap party took place in Antwerp. The next day he was spotted in Miami where he was on vacay for a week, where no blonde woman has been spotted there. After that week he went to NOLA for the tales of the cocktails Please see the rest of that timeline yourself, no time for any roadtrip in that summer.

The trip with the dog owner started and ended in LV, which is to my knowledge Nevada! He was spotted in Wyoming by a fan, he posted later on pics from Jackson Hole and talked about the Million Dollar Cowboy bar in Jackson Hole. This was all August 2022 and not 2023

I think we all saw the tightening up of her socials coming this year. Not only because she’s maturing in age and her career, but just from 2023 alone. She had a lot of negative backlash and fan discourse; practically going viral daily on the bird app. I tried to summarize the best I could from this past year:

Jan: fan accounts worried about her “well being” as she’s not seen for a couple of weeks and not as active on social. She feels the need to respond “I’m excellent thank you” from her vacation to calm them down.

Feb: fans losing it on socials as the rumors are true, she is an LV girl now. Many fans not supportive of the change.

Mar-Apr: Law’s surprise retirement and Z feeling the need to assist online with the negative feedback

May: Negative news about Sam Levinson comes out and Z is automatically tide to him .

Jun: Stans show their ugly faces online when Z is working in LA during Tom’s bday and TC is at the party. She claps back at Daily Mail for spreading fake news.

Jul: Fans upset with Z on how she grieves privately over costars death. She feels the need to post and remind fans about grieving in private.

Aug: a lot of negative talk online about Zs upcoming roles and people not being able to separate fact/fiction. A lot of spamming Tom’s account due to this and negative reaction to Tom’s gay sex scene online. Tom posts on IG and Z doesn’t like it causing another bird app rumor they broke up.

Sept: the “my haaaaaaattttt” saga with a guest appearance from Darnell’s live. “Fans” begin harassing Claire and Darnell’s lives and posts with accusations on Z and/or her private relationship.

Oct: More negative backlash as she stays silent during writers strike and Gaza/palestine conflict. She posts a link on her stories to aid victims in the war.

Nov - Dec: mums the word.

Giiiiirrrrrl.... when you put it in a list like this, it's so easy to see how "fans" and ppl in the gc routinely cross the line and are just so negative online ALL the time. 😔

I'm not even surprised if Z feels like taking a break from social media is for the best at this point.

I've always said that it's such a shame how people on Twitter will treat celebrities... people they don't even KNOW personally 🙄.....and just say the meanest, most vilest things about them on Twitter or the internet.

Then, these same people will then complain online about how their faves "no longer visit or post on social media anymore..." 😒 Well gee, I wonder why! 🤔🤨

I think people forget that at the end of the day, celebrities are just HUMAN beings just like the rest of us. They have feelings too! 😔

I'm so glad that Z and Tom (and many others!) have decided to lessen their time on social media.

Himalayan Linguistics, Linguistics Vanguard and the Australian Journal of Linguistics

In 2024 I have returned to my role as an editor of Himalayan Linguistics, and have joined the editorial boards of two other journals; Linguistics Vanguard and the Australian Journal of Linguistics. I've published in each of these journals before joining the editorial boards, and it's lovely to be involved in three journals across three different areas of interest.

Himalayan Linguistics is a fully Open Access journal, while Linguistics Vanguard and the Australian Journal of Linguistics have a mix of open access and licensed content. If you are an academic and your work is relevant to any of these three journals, please consider them for your next research paper!

Himalayan Linguistics

One of my first academic publications was with Himalayan Linguistics in 2013. I've been so grateful for all the work of the editorial team over the years that I joined the board, and then stepped up as editor in 2022. My co-editors are Gregory Anderson and You-Jing Lin.

Himalayan Linguistics costs nothing to read, and charges no fees for publishing. We're lucky to have the University of California eScholarship infrastructure for publishing. It's my favourite model for academic research.

Linguistics Vanguard

Linguistics Vanguard launched in 2015 and I was eyeing it off for years before being delighted to have a chance to submit a paper for the 2023 Special Issue on scifi corpus methods. Yup, it's the kind of journal that's cool enough to have a whole special issue on using corpora to do linguistics on scifi. I have another paper in the revisions process with LV on lingcomm. I can attest to the speedy process and focus on conciseness. I'm delighted to join as an area manager for gesture and multimodal submissions.

Linguistics Vanguard is a new channel for high quality articles and innovative approaches in all major fields of linguistics. This multimodal journal is published solely online and provides an accessible platform supporting both traditional and new kinds of publications. Linguistics Vanguard seeks to publish concise and up-to-date reports on the state of the art in linguistics as well as cutting-edge research papers. With its topical breadth of coverage and anticipated quick rate of production, it is one of the leading platforms for scientific exchange in linguistics. Its broad theoretical range, international scope, and diversity of article formats engage students and scholars alike.

The Australian Linguistic Society is my local linguistics org, and I'm delighted to join an editorial board full of people whose work I deeply respect. I'm also happy to report the AJL recently adopted the Tromsø Recommendations for data citation.

The Australian Journal of Linguistics is the official journal of the Australian Linguistic Society and the premier international journal on language in Australia and the region. The focus of the journal is research on Australian Indigenous languages, Australian Englishes, community languages in Australia, language in Australian society, and languages of the Australian-Pacific region. The journal publishes papers that make a significant theoretical, methodological and/or practical contribution to the field and are accessible to a broad audience.

Was thinking how we get confirmation of some of the things years later. Like in today's ep jm said him, jk (confirmed) and either one of jin and yg (jm was a bit confused who but it could also be that yoonjin both left later like jikook) were the last ones to leave their dorm and remember how we used to think jikook "might" live together cause they used to share car alot during 2019-2021. Now idk exactly when they left their dorms but i do know the news of RM and jm buying house in nine one hit the media around june 1st 2021. Also that one BTS video where the boys were interviewing e/o and jk asked jm what was the most enjoyable thing these days and jm replied "The most enjoyable thing these days is waking up and seeing jungkook" idr but wasn't it around 2019-2020 when he said that? And jikook and yoonjin used to share car, jikook the most of times so i think yup jikook used to live in the shared apartment be it dorm or whatever that is. So we were basically right.

Intersting thing is even after RM and jm buying house we still saw jikook sharing cars now idk why that. Yes when minimoni brought their houses they shared car but it was like only few times but jikook still has shared cars few times here nd there so i wonder why is that maybe they love sharing cars or their houses are near or etc etc.

Maybe as the besties they're when it comes to car sharing they just simply put these two together knowing they have shared it before too. Remember how they shared car 4 days of concerts in LV? There's another thing who's confirmation we got way later but i don't remember that now but yeah.

Also the way tkkrs be like "but jungkook don't cook for jm he doesn't even have jm's number" both got denied in this ep....i know it's only them who believed their shit theories but they're sooo many in number and they spread it everywhere so it's like thousands of them i think like 99% of them belive that shit. "Jungkook doens't have jm's number why is it a problem it happens people don't have e/o's numbers why are you blaming tkkrs for it" i remember mfkr dionysustkk tweeting this. The way i wanna bitch slap that identity crisis human. Like bitch not only he has jm's number (sounds so fking silly to say even) he literally knows jm's House password and walks like he knows the place and even cook for the two of them so you can sit in a corner and cry me some river

I found it interesting that jimin knew for sure that jk was still with him at the dorms but couldn't confirm whether yoonjin were there too. Seems like a detail you'd recall I feel, unless you were spending a majority of your time with one person. And if we are to go by your timeline it does seem that even after moving out jikook seemed to have made a deliberate choice to take the same car on multiple occasions. I do think there was a period in mid 2021 and early 2023 where jkk were maybe not seeing each that frequently based on some of their conversations, but this docu has really made me re evaluate a lot of these assumptions.

Since 2020, we have gotten almost 1/3 the amount of behind the scenes ot7 content and that definitely had an impact on many peoples assumptions on the members relationships. It's why certain "groups" felt more confident in proclaiming that jikook were never close or only fanservice.

Tkkrs and their cult leaders will never stop in their attempts at undermining jikooks relationship with false narratives. It's something I didn't understand the need of when I first entered shipping spaces because if you believe tkk are real and in a healthy relationship, then why would assuming jikook are close friends, in any way would come in the way of that? Why did jimin need to be the villain in their theories so bad? It's only now that I kinda get that as a tkkr, they can't possibility perceive that tkk are in a 'genuine and healthy' relationship if they have to take jikook at face value. Cause the way those two interact and prioritise one another, does really throw tkkrs off gaurd. Which is why so much of their belief and foundation hinges on all of jkks interactions being fake and forced and jk secretly hating jm. Because the alternative cannot be that they're 'close friends" for them, once they start 'really seeing' jikook for the way they are around one another, it disturbs their perfect ideal.

Not saying that there's no possibility that jikook are in fact just close friends after all, but I think once you do see that underlying spark that makes one go "?" ,it's kind of hard to unsee it.

Louis Hofmann - HERO Magazine Extracts (On Accents & Acting Abroad)

TM: I did, and this is something I wanted to bring up with you. Something that people will find very interesting about you is your accent. 

LH: Yeah, I remember you asking me once, “Why don’t you just use your own [German] accent? [when speaking in English]” But there’s no such thing to me as my own German accent, this is my own accent. This is the accent I feel most comfortable in. I speak in an English accent because I’ve been training that accent for more than four years now to eventually be able to portray English characters and not only English-speaking German characters.

TM: Was it difficult as a German actor to transition into a more international realm? 

LH: It’s been a long journey, I suppose. The first English language thing I did was at the age of nineteen, and now I’m 26. I started working on the accent around the age of 21, 22, and only now feel extremely comfortable in the accent and language. I remember 2017 was a crazy year for me at the age of 19. It was my first time doing English work, and I went to the Oscars ceremony that year. I remember doing my second English job and thinking, “Oh, this is how it’s going to be now. I’m just going to focus on English work.” Then the next year came around, and I had [prior engagements I worked on] that meant I couldn’t continue following that path I was so excited about, so that took me back a little bit. But then I took away the pressure because I put myself under a lot of pressure that year. I had to take a step back. I left out the stress and constantly worked on the language, the accent, spending time in London, and then eventually moving here. It’s been a long journey but a very fulfilling one. Also, I can nerd out about accent work so much. I read in an interview that you really love it as well. I’m not nearly as good as you, what you do is outstanding.

TM: You speak two languages or probably more. I just speak English. 

LH: But the accent work you do is amazing. When I knew I was going to work with you I was so intimidated, like, [puts on a nervous voice] “I’m going to work with Thomasin McKenzie, she’s such a great actor!”

LH: It’s a bit weird we’re going to do this in English because obviously, we’re both German. I remember once we met in London and I refused to speak German, I think that was the only time we actually spoke English to each other. I was so strict about it because it was the first time I went to London to work on my language.

LV: Do you still do that now or do you speak German when you’re in London?

LH: I stopped because it just took away part of my personality. You’ve been doing English work and, to me, it is quite different from acting in the German language. I was wondering how that is for you, do you feel speaking in another language or accent helps you because it instantly creates a character?

LV: I was really pleasantly surprised by how natural it felt to act in English because I did go into it thinking, “Let’s see how this plays out.” Working with an accent was something totally new because it’s not very common in Germany. For this part, I had accent training for American English and it was the first time I approached a character like this. I really enjoyed the process because it instantly gives you a certain something to build your character from, I also enjoyed how on-set we’d sometimes jokingly do other random accents, like a really bad Irish one in between takes. [both laugh]

LH: It’s something you can hold onto instantly. I’m in London at the moment and I’ve been doing some acting classes because I’ve never really done any before and I was really interested in learning something properly. [both laugh] We’ve been doing some animal work lately, I’d heard of it but never tried it. I thought it was really interesting because when I did it I felt like I had something to hold onto while doing the scene.

In anticipation of the upcoming 2023 Logan x Veronica "New Year, New Fic" fest, I bring you a small selection of fics inspired by Logan and Veronica getting busy and getting in fights in a non-linear timeline fashion (think flashbacks, think time loops, think in media res).
