Amber Glenn in a beautiful Lisa McKinnon dress for her free program at the 2023 Skate America and 2024 Worlds. She skated to Muse's Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3.
I've never been a big Shoma fan. Not that I don't recognise his talent but i've no particular emotional attachment to him.
I have a lot of respect for his body of work. I think he's probably the most musical skater out there, and since he moved to Lambiel i've started to really enjoy his programs. They don't always move me, I don't rewatch them often (besides one or two exception), but everytime I've watched him skate during competitions they usually leave me thinking "Damn... This is good..." Objectively great but not my skater.
That said, and since I love doing that, here are all Shoma's competitive programs, from his senior career, ranked from least to best, according to my tastes.
16 - Moonlight Sonata, choreo by Mihoko Higuchi (2018/2019 FS)
Yeah, this was a big miss and tbh it's not wonder Shoma's season went middlingly well and that he missed the podium at home Worlds. This program is just not good. The music is overplayed, the choreo is a cut and paste from Shoma and Mihoko's then well established style. Lots of jumps-crossover-jumps-some choreo that consists in looking intense while moving the arms. A miss.
15 - Turandot version 2, choreo by Mihoko Higuchi (2017/2018 FS)
I rewatched it recently and the music cut is just bad. Why you would cut the "vincero" part I have no idea but here it is. Shoma does a good job with it, but it's nowhere close to the first version of this program.
14 - Winter, choreo by Mihoko Higuchi (2017/2018 SP)
I just really really dislike Shoma's packaging from late 2017 to early 2019. It's just a lot of warhorse with really mid choreo. Shoma's musicality saves it but that's about it.
13 - Ladies in Lavender, choreo by Mihoko Higuchi (2016/2017 SP)
It's still intensely Shoma, and by that I mean skate on two feet and move your arms choreo but the music choice is better. At least it's not a warhorse.
12 - Turandot version 1, choreo by Mihoko Higuchi (2015/2016 FS)
Gets bonus points for including Gira La Cote in the music cut.
11 - Stairway to Heaven, choreo by Mihoko Higuchi (2018/2019 SP)
The step sequence is very nice and Shoma's musicaly makes this program.
10 - Great Spirit, choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne (2019/2020/2021 SP)
Gets deduction points because of some truly bad costumes. Honestly a bit of a let down. The choreo feels far too safe for the music.
9 - Legends, choreo by Mihoko Higuchi (2015/2016 SP)
Much better than any other SP Mihoko choreographed for Shoma. The step sequence alone is more interesting than anything Shoma skated to for the following three seasons. Unexpected like.
8 - Timelapse, choreo by Kenji Miyamoto (2023/2024 FS)
In retrospect, Shoma's farewell FS. Not that great. I love Spiegel im Spiegel but the other piece of music left me cold. The choreo wasn't anything special too, but the performances, especially the NHK one, were absolutely magical.
7 - Bolero, choreo by Stéphane Lambiel (2021/2022 FS)
First of all Bolero gets too much hate from the fandom and y'all lack taste. It's a truly great piece of music and I can think of at least half a dozen warhorses that need to be banned before Bolero. (Romeo and Juliet, Experience, Exogenesis...).
Second of all Sholero goes hard. It is a bit empty at the beginning, but the relentless pace of the music makes for an exciting watch, and in case of a clean program, it's exhilarating. The step sequence at the end is outstanding. Doesn't place higher because the choreo sequence feels almost like an afterthought and honestly Stéphane and Shoma could do better.
6 - Gravity, choreo by Stéphane Lambiel (2022/2023 SP)
Did not enjoy it last season (I thought it wasn't a good fit for Shoma, it felt too much like a Lambiel program). Has grown on me a lot since then. It's the most Lambiel-y Shoma has ever skated and it's good that he did it. Variety! Some diversity in the steps. Makes us of the whole body, not just the arms.
5 - Oboe Concerto, choreo by Kenji Miyamoto (2021/2022 SP)
Quintessential Shoma in that it feels close to a Mihoko program, like Winter, or Ladies in Lavender, but is so so much better. More variety in the choreo. It makes us of the whole body, not just the arms.
Shoma's skating with it's outstanding musicality and uninterrupted flow is a perfect match for Baroque music.
4 - Dancing On My Own, choreo by David Wilson (2019/2020/2021 FS)
My greatest regret, regarding Shoma's career, is that he did not get more programs from Wilson. Imho, given how musical Shoma is, he would have been a perfect fit.
That said DOMO is perhaps the most emotionally loaded program out of them all. Shoma went through hell and high water with it, and when it was performed cleanly, it sang.
3 - Mea Tormenta, choreo by Kenji Miyamoto (2022/2023 FS)
Glorious, iconic, it's a program I don't think anybody but Shoma could have skated. Just stunning work all around, and one of the best men's programs in recent years.
2 - I Love You Kung Fu, choreo by Stéphane Lambiel (2023/2024 SP)
Shoma at his most raw, emotional and soft. Great, great music choice, just magic on the ice.
1 - Loco, choreo by Mihoko Hiiguchi (2016/2017 FS)
I don't know what that says of a skater, when their most successfull program happened during their second senior season, and they've been chasing that high ever since (looking at you Kaori's Piano).
In any case, Loco is as good as the fans say it is, and then some. It highlights all the best aspects of Shoma's skating (the performance, the passion, the musicality) while being absolutely unhinged. Truly one of the highs of the sport.
2023 European Championships - January 28, 2023
Kimmy Repond → Exogenesis Symphony Part III (Redemption), Exogenesis Symphony Part I (Overture) by Muse, choreographed by David Vincour
this is for the 2023 in review writing meme! (which... yes i'm replying 2 weeks into 2024, this will tell you how my days has been going ;w;)
3. What’s something you learned about yourself as a writer?
That I'm capable of writing things quickly and on the fly. I know this doesn't sound very impressive, but like… I tend to get hung up on how I need to outline stuff (outlining is still my preferred method to start fics) and then I would agonize over my scenes overthinking on whether they're in character or true to the story or not. But this year due to various circumstances I just started forcing myself to write things out quickly without thinking too much and then… I found that I was finishing things and that the quality wasn't too bad for a first draft.
I guess that saying about "kill the perfectionist in you, getting something down is better than nothing" is true.
16. What were you go-to writing songs?
I tend to pick songs related to the fandom I'm writing for! So for game fandoms it's always their OSTs, for anime fandoms it's often instrumental versions of the OP/ED etc.
If I don't have a specific song or soundtrack in mind, I usually write to instrumental music that fits the "vibe" I'm aiming for - Joe Hisaishi songs (Merry Go Round of Life is a favourite), Jennifer Thomas's A Beautiful Storm, Ezio Bosso's Rain in Your Black Eyes, Muse's Exogenesis etc. In recent months I also wrote a lot to the Chasm music from Genshin, in particular, Stories of Remote Antiquity and Inevitable Conflict. Lately because of my Star Rail focus, I also write a lot to Wildfire and various Luofu soundtracks.
22. Share an excerpt from your favorite scene
This is from Chapter 6/the final chapter of A Drop of Rain Heralds the Cleansing Storm, my JingHeng post-1.3 update story (so, spoilers for the story, I guess).
How does the freedom of an unending journey feel like? Do you have strong ties to any particular planet you’ve visited? You say you often come back to familiar locations because they mean something to you – but have you ever been tempted to stay?
March is right – Jing Yuan will never ask these questions aloud. Dan Heng knows the look of someone who hopes but does not dare to tempt fate, because he’d been that person once. He dreamed and dreamt of a previous lifetime, but never once had Dan Heng actually envisioned being able to lawfully return to the Luofu and put his past to rest, not until he’d been forced into breaking his banishment edict by numerous interfering hands and his own concern for his friends.
As the one who was always left behind, who had to remain stalwart and steadfast against the tribulations of time and the vagaries of life, hoping without expectations seems to be a habit Jing Yuan has long fallen into.
Dan Heng won’t allow him to stay in that rut.
He reaches for Jing Yuan’s hand, the air around Dan Heng shifting as his horns materialize on his head and his hair cascades down his back. “Jing Yuan.”
Jing Yuan startles, his eye a flash of gold in the dark; his surprise is a clear ripple in the bond that rings loud and clear in Dan Heng’s senses. Around them, a steady drizzle falls – partly a side effect of Dan Heng’s transformation and partly borne from Dan Heng’s desire to keep this moment between them private, the cloudhymn rain obscuring them from sight.
“Dan Heng?”
“The tacit understanding between us is well and good in battle and during our day-to-day doings, but some things, I’ve realized, need to be spoken out loud.”
30. What’s something that you want to write in 2024?
I have like… three to four sequel stories I want to write to A Drop of Rain Heralds the Cleansing Storm. I want to finish the direct sequel first (long distance relationship focused) but the one I will probably have most fun with is my verse's version of the canon Dan Heng: IL's companion quest (aka, someone tries to assassinate Bailu, Jing Yuan rescues her and tells Dan Heng who is trailblazing with the Express; Dan Heng immediately returns to the Luofu to confront the Preceptors. It's basically Dan Heng and that "aren't you tired of being nice? don't you just want to go ape shit?" meme yes I know something something Dan Feng already did that, but I personally see Dan Heng as his own person and he deserves to slap the Preceptors around for all the crap they've done).
I also need to write my next chapter of Rallying Point! It's a Reigen perspective chapter just before the Spirits and Such crew try to bust him out which is why I'm struggling so much with it ahhhhhhh. So close to the end and yet so far!
*crashes through the boards* NHK Trophy women’s free skate and final result, holy-
1. Ava Marie Ziegler: Remember when I said someone else might come out of nowhere and win it all? So that happened. I was only generally aware of Ava’s existence and I’m not sure if I’d seen her skate before, but she really had the skate of her life here. Big congrations to her, and her reaction to her score and the way she ran to hug Lindsay after were so wonderful. She was in 5th after the short, I tell you, this discipline isn’t usually the wildly unpredictable one. The women are menning, as they say: reject gender roles!
2. Lindsay Thorngren: That fall made me so scared for her ankle, but I guess it’s okay. She looked super nervous and unsure, probably from the pressure of being accustomed to being 5th or 6th and suddenly being in 1st and skating last and thinking she can maybe win this and maaaybe make the final, idk. i was really hoping for her to win, but silver here is still big. Hopefully she can keep this momentum up, and hopefully US Figure Skating will stop putting all their eggs in one leaning basket
3. Nina Pinzarrone: I don’t know what I was on a few weeks ago, I enjoy her a lot. I especially love the pivot and toe steps at the beginning. Congrats on making the final! Two Belgians at the final was not on my 2023-24 season bingo card
4. Haein Lee: *sighs in 4th place again* The underrotations are still eating her. It’s ok, hopefully she can get it better as the season goes on. The illusion spin exit went well at least!
5. Yuna Aoki: Oh my gosh I love her. She is so lovely and musical and just everything you picture when you hear “figure skating”. I was so relaxed watching her skate, she just seemed so calm and serene, I never worried before any jump at all. And apparently she choreographed her short program herself? God-tier, please can she compete more often?
6. Anastasiia Gubanova: A really beautiful job in the free skate, a shame that the short kind of took her out of the running. The spins are still not leveling
7. Yelim Kim: “Omg Yelim landing a huge, gorgeous triple-triple like seasons of old???!!!” *crashes into the boards* Luckily she’s okay and there’s no deduction for that since she didn’t fall, and the judges couldn’t give her good GOE but also didn’t give too bad since the combination itself was basically successful. Despite that and a fall, this was a lot better than previously, and hopefully she can get things situated for the rest of the season
8. Mai Mihara: All her jumps looked really, really shaky, but she was so lovely all the same, I was kind of on the verge of tearing up, and that spiral was glorious, I will never forgive the cameraman for choosing the worst angle possible. She brought the sunshine to this event
9. Wakaba Higuchi: I can’t believe she went for the triple axel, like wow, but also please be careful. I was also really feeling this program even though it’s Coldplay, and she was landing everything, and I was just so happy. Then she randomly slipped on the the lunge in the choreographic sequence, but that’s okay, she seemed pretty happy and I’m glad she was able to have such a good performance
10. Seoyeong Wi: No more Exogenesis. Please. I’m so tired of Exogenesis please stop. The skate was rough. The commentator was weirdly harsh about her letting her disappointment show after popping a jump for the second time and not really keeping up the performance, and I kinda feel bad
11. Lea Serna: It was rough. I’ve seen her nail this program and it was really great, but this time the jumps were just not going well
12. Lindsay van Zundert: It was really rough, and so was the short. Just not a good competition for her at all, hopefully she’ll do better elsewhere later on

A Familiar Kind Of Love - auroraphilealis, ineverhadmyinternetphase
Summary: Born in a world full of magic, Dan spends his days running an apothecary and curing the sick. Potions and antidotes are his only friends, and he lives a happy life of quiet solitude - until a familiar he never wanted takes it all away. Forced to make a decision that’s life or death for one of them, Dan and Phil have to learn to co-exist together, entering a journey of self-discovery… and a familiar kind of love. Ace/Aro
A Match And A Fuse (ao3) - waveydnp
Summary: Phil is twenty six years old and stuck in a dead end life. He works at Starbucks and may or may not be carrying a torch for his best friend of eight years. He doesn’t know who he is or what he wants–or how to go about figuring it out.
That all starts to change when he happens upon the resume of a certain law school grad named Daniel.
Better With You By My Side - phanlight
Summary: Dan and Phil are both sons of rich families and are sent to ballroom dancing lessons. Because there is a shortage of girls, Dan and Phil end up as partners. Phil really doesn’t want to be there and Dan doesn’t either, but is so frustrated by the fact Phil doesn’t want to dance with him he is determined to get him to.
Birthday Sex (ao3) - danfanciesphil (thejigsawtimess)
Summary: The rules are pretty simple. Whoever's birthday it is gets whatever they want, no questions asked. A bi-annual sex treaty.
It's the perfect answer to getting rid of all of that pent up angst, leftover desire and sexual frustration they feel for each other. And seriously, it'll be fine. There's no way anyone can be manipulated or end up with their feelings hurt or anything like that. Granted, friends-with-benefits has a bad rep, but how could this possibly go wrong?
They've got it all planned out.
Bluebird (ao3) - lvckyphan
Summary: An unlikely tale of odd affection and baffling fondness between a pair of outcasts in a ramshackle orphanage comes to be plagued by tragedy when they move away to the green idleness of Scotland. Six years scuttle by, and all that was promised to remain simple is replaced by the ugly misfortune of dirty secrets, traumatic yesterdays and Phil Lester’s forbidden feelings for Dan Howell.
Brick By Brick - embarrassing-myself, auroraphilealis
Summary: No one said having an unmated Alpha and an unmated Omega living under the same roof was going to be easy, but add in a mess of feelings and desire, and things go from bad to worse. When Phil Lester asked his best friend, Dan Howell, to move in with him, he thought he could ignore his feelings and refrain from submitting, but with an oblivious Dan scenting him every other day, he decides he has to put a stop to it. Jealousy and misunderstandings collide to throw their lives into chaos, forcing both men to reconsider their relationship. Will they ever get their happy ending, or will prevalent sexism force them apart?
Charlotte (ao3) - dannihowell (anotherdaughter)
Summary: When Dan's little sister needs a home, he and Phil offer a place to stay.
Exogenesis Symphony (ao3) - SpectralNyx
Summary: Many things can change in the course of a few years, but Dan Howell finds much more can occur in the span of a single evening when a fateful encounter wth the impossible hurtles his life into a new and startling direction that will take all of his willpower and strength to survive.
Of all the possible transformations he thought his life could take he never expected the savage world he's suddenly thrust into and forced to make sense of all on his own. However, when Phil returns from a family holiday Dan must confront a greater threat and try to find a way to protect them both from the creature he's become.
His (ao3) - wishicouldunreadthat
Summary: One day, in October 2009, Phil wakes up as the hostage of Daniel Howell - an eighteen-year-old fan that he's been talking to online. Dan has one goal: to have Phil love him back. And he won't stop at anything to get it. And Phil is scared, because he doesn't quite know what Dan wants of him, and at the same time he fears how much Dan can change him.
A long story from 2009 onwards that explores their actual life story from the perspective of Dan being an obsessive fan. Includes violence and blood, threats of death, kidnapping, restraint, terror, strong language, emotional manipulation, abuse, smut (some non-con, some BDSM)
I'm Waiting For the Day (ao3) - japhanforever
Summary: Dan has been working in the Lester's pet store for two years now, but he has been pining after their youngest son, Phil, since possibly the beginning of time. Phil is somewhat of an enigma to everyone, and Dan wants nothing more than to get to know Phil a little better, but since Phil has never given Dan a second look, it seems impossible. That is until Phil asks Dan to accompany him to a pet expo to help expand their business. Then, a whole lot of things seem more possible. (also this will be chaptered i some how messed that up in the description)
Let Me Be Your Call Boy (ao3) - auroraphilealis (peachrosepetals), embarrassing_myself
Summary: After coming out as gay to his friends on his birthday, the last thing Dan is expecting is to be gifted a call boy as a present, let alone one that’s been paid for for the entire night. Allowing Phil to show him the ropes is his first mistake, paying him to come back every week is his second, and using him to convince his parents he really is gay is his third. As a successful lawyer, the money isn’t the problem - falling in love is.
Misfit (wattpad) - MelancholyMango
Summary: Dan is different. He's learned to accept that. I mean, what choice did he have? He's been this way since he was a baby. People might not have questioned him about talking to things that weren't really there at that age, but he can't remember a time he didn't have people that 'weren't really there' dancing around him. Obviously it's more of a nuisance than a blessing, constantly having to put up with spirits bugging him or explaining to his friends what the hell he's staring at or talking to. In fact, he's found it easier to just avoid it all. So that's what he does. He moved into a newly-built apartment where he wouldn't have to worry about ghosts, found ways to make money on the internet, and abandoned all of his friendships.
However, his plan wasn't exactly foolproof. Sadly, there's only so much money that can be made doing mediocre graphic design on the internet, and there's no way he can make a living off of it. That leaves him with two options; either get a real job or get a roommate. Neither sound desirable, but he figures it'd be easier for one person to get used to his weirdness than a whole crowd.
Nothing Like a Storybook (ao3) - Merrydith
Summary: University Of Manchester, 2009
Dan Howell is an aloof loner and Phil Lester a well-known weirdo. In theory they are worlds apart, but a chance post-party meeting under the Manchester moonlight sends their lives spiraling and soon they find they have a lot more in common than they thought.
Pretty Odd (Things Have Changed For Me and That's Okay) (ao3) - Cadensaurus (orphan_account)
Summary: Baby!fic in which one day, Phil wakes up with a baby in his bedroom and finds out that apparently he and Dan are the only ones who don't know where this baby came from, as everybody else claims that it's Phil's. What happens next is they then end up raising a baby together, with no less than a few existential crises from both of them along the way, as well as plenty of blunders and mishaps. Oh, and through it all, Phil starts falling for Dan but doesn't dare tell him because he can't risk losing his best friend.
Psycho (ao3) - thecoumie
Summary: When Dan's thoughts take the best out of him, the only thing he can do is to follow through.
Deciding to play by his own rules, Dan embodies the dark part of his mind. Phil, noticing changes in his flatmate's behavior, worries for his mental state. Wanting the best for him, he tries to crawl inside his head to understand him... but Dan won't let him in so easily.
So Many Stars - transdimensional-void
Summary: After graduating with his law degree, Dan decides to move to Japan to teach English for a year.
Steal My Heart (Steal My Whole Life Too) - ineverhadmyinternetphase, auroraphilealis
Summary: Captain of the Royal Guard and Prince of Morellia, Philip Lester has never been given the chance to find love. Instead, he’s run from a system that works to end class differences and improve equality for its citizens. Happy as he is to make the world a better place, Phil can’t help feeling bitter towards his ancestors for making it impossible for him to find someone who will actually love him for more than just his title, and strives instead for a life of justice and doing good - only to meet his match in the King of Thieves, a man who will change everything he once thought he knew in life. Together, they must depart on a quest to save the kingdom, and, in the process, destroy their differences and find their own form of love.
Sweet Pea - botanistlester
Summary: (tw) A nickname that goes bitter in your mouth. Cries for help that no one listens to. Gentle hands that make you quake on the ground you’re standing on. When Phil first met Nico, he thought he was a gift from the heavens. But behind the mask lies something daunting, something unnerving, that Phil never foresaw. Through his journey, he finds solace in Dan, the regular at his workplace, who seems to be the only one who sees through Nico’s mask to the darkness underneath.
Teeth (ao3) - lvckyphan
Summary: The story of a broken marriage between a retired writer and his manic husband, and their twisted capabilities to make language bleed.
The Light in the Dark (ao3) - PhanNotebook
Summary: Dan is a 16 year old who is bullied at school. The only bright spot in his life is being able to go home and watch videos by someone called AmazingPhil. However when a bully overhears a conversation, a bully assumes Phil is Dan’s boyfriend, and decides to make Dan’s life hell because of it. Dan tweets Phil about it, and gets a surprising reply.
The Prince & The Wolf (ao3) - serendipitys
Summary: Let me tell you about the tale of how a boy who had flowers growing in his soul fell in love with a boy who had thorns trapping his.

Summary: Dan Howell has spent the last three summers at Camp Bergamot, but it’s never been quite like this before. This year, he faces a summer full of new friends, a new relationship, and an entirely new view on his own sexuality. Perhaps Camp Bergamot should be renamed camp self discovery for all the changes Dan has gone through, but one thing’s for sure - despite all the hiccups and the drama, he just might have found the love of his life.
Those Who Trust - theshyauthor
Summary: Dan used to be a submissive and now he’s just a broken shell of a man.
