Toyota Fortuner Models That Retain The Most Value

Toyota’s Fortuner is a phenomenon, the large SUV selling more units each month than all but two of our top-selling cars in South Africa. Here we report on which model is likely to retain its resale value best.

The current generation of the Toyota Fortuner has been with us here in South Africa since March 2016. And this revised and more refined version has continued where the previous Toyota Fortuner for sale left off as the country’s top-selling SUV by far!

A cash-cow for Toyota dealers

Just prior to lock-down in March 2020,  the Fortuner was regularly clocking in sales in the 900 to 1 000 per month bracket, and as such it must be the envy of all other manufacturers in the country.  Indeed, in March 2020, the Fortuner logged over 1 100 sales! Sure, Volkswagen has been the overall passenger car champ for a decade with its Polo and Polo Vivo models. Pre-lock-down, their figures tended to register in the 2 000 per month-plus region for each of these! But when you consider that the Fortuner prices range between R521 000 and R764 000, you will appreciate that profit margins on each Fortuner sold are way, way ahead of the affordable hatchback game. Pricing for Polo and Polo Vivo models ranges between R215 000 and R423 000. The Fortuner model range is straight-forward So many manufacturers have huge model ranges these days that end up being totally confusing. It comes as something of a relief to check out a Fortuner price list and realise that there are just eight models, with three engine choices, three transmission choices, and two basic trim levels. Engine and transmission choices There are two diesel engines and one petrol engine available in the Toyota Fortuner range. The entry-level model is the Fortuner 2.7 Automatic, the only petrol model in the current range. The engine is a 2,7-litre 4-cylinder non-turbo petrol engine. Power is 122kw and torque is 245 Nm, and this engine option only comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The mid-range Fortuner engine is the 2.4GD-6. This is a 2,4-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel producing 110 kW and 400 Nm of torque. It is available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox in rear-wheel-drive models. There is also a 4X4 version of the 2.4GD-6, and this comes only with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The top engine option is the 2.8GD-6. This is a 2,8-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine producing 130 kW and 450 Nm of torque.  The 2.8GD-6 engine is only available with automatic transmission. However, it is available as a rear-wheel-drive or 4X4 model. Trim levels The Toyota Fortuner currently comes with a standard trim level or so-called Epic trim, which has more features than the standard trim model. There is also a special Epic Black trim. Which Fortuner model will retain its value best? The most popular Toyota Fortuner model in terms of new-car sales is the 2.4 GD-6 Automatic and this is the model that will retain its resale value best. Next up is the 2.8 GD-6 Epic,  followed by the 2.8 GD-6 4X4 Epic. The fourth best-seller is the 2.4 GD-6 4X4 Automatic. We have picked up that the trend is very much away from manual models in the Fortuner range, and demand for the sole petrol variant is very much on the wane. It should be noted, however, that mileage and condition are also very large factors when it comes to retaining value in a motor vehicle. Koronavirüs nedeniyle küresel çapta olumsuz etkilenen otomotiv sektöründe sıfır araçların yanı sıra ikinci el pazarındaki dalgalanma devam ediyor. Yapılan son araştırma ile pandemi sürecinde fiyatı en çok artan ikinci el otomobiller belli oldu.

Covid-19 salgınıyla ekonomik açıdan zorlu bir sürece girilirken, Türkiye’de yılın ilk aylarında başlayan sıfır otomobil tedariğindeki sıkıntıların yansımaları halen devam ediyor. Tüketiciler yeniden ikinci ele yönelirken, artan bu ilgiye paralel şekilde fiyatlar da ciddi anlamda yükselmeye devam ediyor. Sektörün en büyük veri ve ikinci el fiyatlandırma şirketi Cardata’nın raporuna göre 2019 Aralık- 2020 Nisan döneminde fiyatı en çok artan ikinci el otomobil yüzde 24,07 ile 2016 Honda Civic 1.6 i-VTEC Eco oldu. 2015 Ford Focus 1.5 TDCI yüzde 23,75 fiyat artışıyla ikinci sırada yer alırken, değeri yüzde 22,22 oranında yükselen 2015 Dacia Duster 1.5 DCI 4x4 ise listenin üçüncü sırasında bulunuyor.

İkinci el otomobil fiyatları ortalama yüzde 12,33 arttı

Türkiye pazarında en çok satan ikinci el araçların güncel durumuna bakıldığında dört ayda ortalama yüzde 12,33’lük artış yaşanması dikkat çekiyor. Yine aynı dönemde ülkemizde en çok satan ilk üç model sırasıyla Volkswagen Passat (2015), Fiat Egea (2017) ve Volkswagen Passat (2016) oldu. 2015 model Volkswagen Passat 1.6 TDI BMT’nin fiyatı yüzde 11,87 oranında arttı. 2017 model Fiat Egea 1.3 MultiJet’te bu artış yüzde 10,18 olarak gerçekleşirken, 2016 model Volkswagen Passat 1.6 TDI BMT yüzde 11,03 oranında fiyat artışı yaşadı. 

Diğer taraftan en çok satan ilk 10 ikinci el otomobiller içerisinde fiyatı en fazla yükselen modellere bakıldığında ise yüzde 16,04 ile 2015 model Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI başı çekiyor. İkinci sırada yüzde 15,14 fiyat artışıyla 2016 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI BMT ve yüzde 14,82 artışla 2017 model Renault Megane 1,5 DCI geliyor.

2020′nin ikinci el yılı olacağını ifade eden Cardata Genel Müdürü Hüsamettin Yalçın şunları söyledi:

"Senenin başında 0 kilometre araç tedariğinde ciddi bir bulunurluk problemi vardı. Buna mart ayından itibaren Covid-19 salgınının getirdiği etkiler de eklenince, 0 kilometre araç neredeyse bitti ve talep ikinci ele doğru yöneldi. Şu anda ikinci el araç fiyatları yaşanan talep patlamasından dolayı yükselmeye devam ediyor. 

Markalar mayıs ayı itibariyle yeniden üretime döndü ama bu dönüş az kapasite ve az üretimle gerçekleşiyor. Yani önümüzdeki mayıs, haziran ve temmuz döneminde de ikinci ele olan talep devam edecektir. Diğer yandan kurdaki artışın araç fiyatlarına yansıması nedeniyle 0 kilometre fiyatlarının bugünden yüzde 7-8 oranında daha yukarıda olacağını öngörmekteyiz. Sonuç olarak, ikinci elde yükselen fiyatların geri gelmeyeceğini, aksine belirli bir ölçüde artmaya devam edeceğini düşünüyoruz.”

Volkswasgen T-Cross coming to South Africa in 2019

In the second half of the year, Volkswagen will introduce its first compact SUV to the model line-up. The T-Cross will join the Tiguan and Touareg in the Volkswagen SUV model range and advance the company’s offensive strategy in the growing SUV segment.

In 2018, the compact SUV segment consituted 8.7% of the total market. Where most segments have shrunk, the compact SUV segment grew year-on-year from 2014 to 2018. In 2014, the segment accounted for 19 027 of new vehicle sales, whilst in 2018, the sales volume increased to 31 982 units, which equates to a 68% growth. This is one of the many reasons that attracted Volkswagen in the segment.

The T-Cross is based on the same MQB platform as the new Polo. The T-Cross slots into the Volkswagen product portfolio under the Tiguan.

The vehicle is 4 237mm long, boasts a wheelbase of 2 551mm and is 1 584mm metres high. While it is a compact SUV, the T-Cross is practical with 377 litres of boot space. This can be expanded to 455 litres if the second row of seats is moved forward. By folding the rear seats flat, the carrying capacity is increased to 1 281 litres.

A host of standard as well as optional driver assistance features will be available in the T-Cross.

The T-Cross will be available with optional LED headlightswith wheel sizes of up to 18 inches. The interior of the T-Cross is similar to that of the new Polo and will be offered with optional Active Info Display.

Cars For Sale: South Africa’s Best 

A bit of a throwback, but herewith are the semi-finalists of the 2019/20 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank.

The awards programme recognises the best purchasing propositions in the respective categories of the new vehicle market.

“Vehicle purchases are amongst the biggest that consumers are likely to make in their lifetime,” said Ghana Msibi, executive head of sales and marketing at WesBank.

“Initiatives such as this offer credible opinions on the types of cars and features available in the market, and in so doing help consumers make informed decisions when choosing a new or used vehicle,” he said.

The 13 eventual category winners will be selected from the list of 65 vehicles, which includes model derivatives from 24 brands represented in the South African market.

All vehicles available on the South African market on September 1, 2019, were eligible, not only new products that were launched during the past 12 months.

Compared with the 2018/19 Cars Awards, the executive sedan category has been replaced with one that caters for premium-positioned crossovers.

The former Hot Hatch category (now named Fun Hatch) encompasses more affordable contenders and the price caps for the Premium SUV and Performance Car segments have been raised, it said.

“It is important to note that we analyse market changes proactively and adapt the categories to be better aligned with the South African consumer,” said Cars.co.za consumer experience manager Hannes Oosthuizen.

“With no new contenders in the Executive Sedan category, as well as very poor sales in that segment, we saw it fit to create a new category (to reflect growth and interest in upmarket crossovers) instead.

“Meanwhile there have been no new launches in the traditional hot hatch category, but there has been activity at a lower price point, so we’ve created a new category called Fun Hatch.”

And given the rapidly rising prices of cars for sale in Johannesburg, Oosthuisen said that sticking to a R1-million barrier for Premium SUV and Performance Car categories is no longer practical.

Volkswagen lead the charge in 2019/2020 again.

Even though 24 brands’ vehicles feature in the list of 65, five marques have more than three semi-finalists in the running for category honours.

Volkswagen has the most representatives (8), followed by BMW (6) and Audi, which has 5, although the A1 Sportback 40TFSI S Line is notably a semi-finalist in two separate categories.

Ford (5) and Toyota (4) round out the major manufacturers.
