This is the second facelift for the seven-seater Atlas that was originally introduced in 2017 and was updated in 2020, but the first one for its five-seater Cross Sport sibling that entered the US market in 2020. #vwatlas2023 #vwatlas2024

The visual changes on the 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are concentrated on the front end. They both feature a pair of larger headlights connected by an LED bar above the illuminated VW emblem (standard on all models except the base trims), with the outer shape of the clusters sending some Ford Expedition vibes. These new lighting units, along with the enlarged grille and interconnected bumper intakes, distinguish the US-spec SUVs from the related Chinese VW Terramont and Terramont X.

Hyundai Palisade: Cost, Facts, and Figures | HotCars
Tumblr media
Prior to the 2020 Palisade, Hyundai’s entry into the 3-row VEHICLE market was to simply the lengthen a Santa Fe , integrate a rudimentary third line, and call it a day. This worked for buyers which weren’t planning on using the 3rd row much, and definitely not for adults. But it didn’t match well against dedicated 3-row vehicles like the Honda Initial, Ford Explorer, and others.
So , when Hyundai debuted the Palisade, these people showed all the signs of creating for lost time. It had been plenty big, well-featured, plus was clearly not type of any existing Hyundai model, though Kia Telluride was openly a sibling from another mother. Yet what surprised many in the model's debut was the style, which seemed to step previous its mass market competitors, and anything Hyundai formerly offered to seriously tread upon luxury territory. Indeed, the particular dash’s horizontal theme, hectic but well laid out middle console, and center screen as extension of the measure cluster all looked like they may be right at home under several lofty European brand.
Tumblr media
That said, the automobile is intended to take market share through mainstream brands, so its not all Palisade could be heavily packed in luxury features. The particular entry level SE model does not have expected luxury features just like a hands free lift-gate, heated controls, LED Lighting and even several expected driver assist functions. Of course , all those things and much more become available as you climb the particular model hierarchy which includes the particular SEL, Limited, and for people who find those trim brands too pedestrian - the very best model is called Calligraphy.
In an industry exactly where smaller displacement and turbos are becoming the norm, Hyundai power all Palisade models the fashion way with a large normally-aspirated V6. The a few. 8-liter V6 generates the no-fuss 291 hp @ 6000 with a peak associated with 262 lb-ft @ 5200, which is run through an 8-speed automatic transmission with exercise shifters. All models arrive standard with FWD and also have a City/Hwy/Combined MPG associated with 19 / 26 and 22. While better than the particular Chevrolet Traverse; as a whole, it really is only about 1-2 mpg, lower than most of its competitors, which includes those with turbo-4 engines like the Subaru Ascent, VW Atlas, and Mazda CX-9.
Hyundai’s HTRAC Awd is a $1700 upgrade upon all trim levels. HTRAC AWD defaults to a 70/30 f/r power distribution, yet up to 50% of strength can be sent to the rear tires when needed.
There is certainly only so much you can do using the two-box shape of a 3-row crossover, but Hyundai really does add some interesting details. Front side is dominated by a huge version of the brand's 6-sided grille, only here this looks as stretched as it looks squashed upon the Sonata . Notable is the way the bright rim of the billet grille is thin at the top yet gets progressively thicker the particular further down you go. Because Hyundai has done lately using its crossovers, what look like razor blade thin headlights high up upon either side are actually switching lights, while what appear to be over complex fog lamps are actually the headlights. Within the Palisade, they are tied collectively by a vertical LED DRL band. A similar band shows up on the inner border from the tail lights which carry on down to border red mirrors and then turns to become a cheaper side trim that is adopted through between the fenders.
Tumblr media
Another Hyundai styling trope is the experimenting with chrome window cut and the Palisade continues the particular tradition with upper brilliant trim rises from the bottom of the A-pillar and then falls down after the wide C-pillar as if to frame the sedan shape. Lower shiny window trim stops in short supply of the C-pillar. It is a little bit odd if you pay attention to this but isn’t ugly. Fascinating detail decisions aside, general, the exterior is a sophisticated style with plenty of flow plus follow-through.
Tumblr media
It is the interior that really matters on a vehicle like this plus it’s here the Palisade shines the most. The splash itself is very clean and easy with horizontal vents linked at the bottom by pewter-finish cut that thickens in the middle to house audio and middle display controls in the exact same finish. All other hard regulates are on the wide angled-up center console. This includes the three-button transmission control having an adjacent Park button. Top of the display is housed within an extension of the gauge bunch housing which looks a little big for the 8” screen on the SE and SEL. The 10. 25” screen in the same housing matches better. In front of the driver is really a handsome three-spoke steering wheel with all the usual array of controls. SONY ERICSSON and SEL models possess analog gauges with plus LED driver info display. Limited and Calligraphy versions get a configurable digital measure arrangement.

2nd row captain’s chairs from the SEL level. The 3rd row is acceptable designed for adult use at least just for cross-town. Access to the third line is simplified by a launch for a spring-loaded mechanism that will both tilts the seat-back forward and slides the whole seat forward as well within about a second’s time. The particular seats can be moved with a button on top of the seat back again for adults or at the bottom from the seat-back side within reach of children.
SE FWD - $32, 675, AWD +$1, 700
Starting prices for the Palisade’s competitive set range begins as low as $29, 800 for that Chevrolet Traverse and as higher as $34, 910 for your Toyota Highlander. The Palisade’s starting MSRP falls in just a grand up or straight down of the Telluride, Honda Initial, VW Atlas, Ford Explorer, Dodge Durango, and Subaru Ascent. The last is 4WD while the rest start as front or rear-wheel drive.
With either driveline, the entry-level Palisade will get you the luxury-appearing exterior plus dash design, but not numerous items one would expect with an actual luxury model. The particular driver’s seat adjustments are usually manual, and there is no double zone climate control or even push button start. The particular seats are not leather naturally , but kudos to Hyundai for providing cloth rather, which is more comfortable than the glorified vinyl found in entry-level high-class models. The cloth chairs also feature the same diamond-quilted pattern as the leather chairs, and you can have them in light gray as well as black.
Frills are not completely lacking. Paddle shifters are standard , that are always welcome in hilly terrain. There is Bluetooth connection that includes Wireless Android Auto™ & Apple CarPlay®, the particular rearview monitor includes car parking guidance, and the steering wheel consists of both tilt and telescopic adjustability.
SEL FWD – $35, 325, AWD +$1, 700
The SEL looks to become where Hyundai expects the majority of Palisade shoppers to property. There is still no buckskin for your backside but the driver’s seat has 8-way energy adjustability, both front chairs are heated and the second-row seats are captain’s seats, though retaining the counter for 8-passenger seating is definitely an option.
The particular driver-assist features are still slender, but you do get both sightless spot and rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance systems. Those exact same sensors give you Safe Depart Assist, which keeps you through opening the door in front of a good approaching vehicle. You can start the vehicle with a button now plus there is dual zone environment control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink® just in front of the conventional sun-roof. Not much changes on the exterior aside from roof rails, turning gentle LED repeaters in the part mirrors, and bright complete door handles with allowed lights.
Because proof that Hyundai numbers this to be the volume design, it is the only one with option deals. The $2, 400 Comfort Package immediately steps up the luxurious vibe with 20” tires along with LED taillights along with a hands-free lift-gate. Inside, the driving force now looks through the controls at an LCD display, front travellers get wireless smartphone getting, second row passengers obtain shades for the door home windows, 3 rd row passengers obtain USB charge ports, and additional back in the cargo area is really a 115-volt power outlet. The vehicle also gets a self-leveling suspension and front car parking sensors.
Tumblr media
The $3, 100 High quality Package requires the Comfort Package as well. So , when there is just one gotta-have-it item in this particular package, it will cost you $5, 500 to get it. The majority of prominent is Nappa natural leather seating, a 10. 25” middle display screen and navigation system. The particular shotgun seat now provides 8- way power flexibility, and there is integrated memory space for the driver seat placement and other functions. The 2 nd line seats are heated, 3 or more rd row seatbacks now switch on and down, and the car owner can easily talk to anyone back again there with the Driver-Talk intercom. This is also where you obtain Highway Generate Assist , which includes adaptive cruise control and street keeping ability.
Limited FWD – $45, 275, AWD +$1, 700
The Limited design is $4, 400 more than an SEL with both deals, both of which come regular. The biggest addition is the 12-speaker 630-watt Harman Kardon® high quality audio with QuantumLogic® Encompass with Clari-Fi ™ Music Recovery Technology that restores compacted audio sources. Also huge is the dual panel sun-roof, and the larger 12. 3” digital cluster. The driver’s seat also gets 4-way lumbar power adjust plus adjustable leg extension. With regard to reference, the Limited will be $775 under the starting cost for an Acura MDX.
Calligraphy FWD - $46, 200, 4WD +1, seven hundred
The range-topping Calligraphy is a relatively little step over the Limited, and many of its added features are usually of the gilding-the-lily variety. Contributing to the Limited are unique 20” wheels, fancier billet grille treatment, puddle lamps as well as other minor exterior enhancements. The inside includes quilted leather doors, a microfiber suede-like headliner, perforated leather steering wheel edge and a nicer cargo defense plate in the back. Nothing of these are substantial, but the low-price step does make simply getting the top model a simple decision.
Tumblr media
At the top of its range, the particular Palisade competes well towards premium competitors from Acura Buick and Infiniti or even others that are less outfitted and arguably don’t coddle their occupants any better in terms of comfort or even aesthetics. In fact , its worth proposition is best challenged with the mechanically identical, different showing up but just as upscale bumping Of Telluride.

2020 VW Atlas Exterior, Interior, Price, Engine
2020 VW Atlas Exterior, Interior, Price, Engine – With a blocky shape and beefcake design, the Atlas delivers friends and family-helpful guests and freight region without even a suggestion of a mum-cell phone appearance. It’s not the best or the most energy-efficient mid-size crossover, even so, this finest Volkswagen helps make its actors by using performance that is difficult to surpass, moreover to an agile chassis, high-quality air travel practicality, and comfortable car seats for about 7. Advancement likewise requires focus: the 2020 VW Atlas could be possessed with the latest active safety features, infotainment displays with highly detailed artwork, as very well as an elegant reconfigurable electronic gauge cluster. An extended, transferable program warranty and fees that damages a quantity of the section’s most widely used alternatives are all new plumes in the Atlas’s quiver.
2020 VW Atlas Exterior
The Atlas is Volkswagen’s initial (and long-awaited) opportunity into the few-row crossover rodeo and is an entirely product-new model from north to the south. A stocky, squared-off body and additional-sizeable dimensions deliver it the interior area obtained to undertake identified family Sports utility vehicles such as the Honda Pilot and the Dodge Durango. Its bricklike form offers the 2020 VW Atlas a solid, off-road-prepared look and enables a space-successful interior. Its plus sizing may very well be overwhelming to some, nonetheless from associated with the wheel it senses a lot more manoeuvrable than its large proposes.
2020 VW Atlas Exterior
2020 VW Atlas Interior
Volkswagen has consumed the always keep-it-very simple-stupid method by decreasing the range of important option communities and centring somewhat on four exclusive trims (S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium), each with little by little much more attributes. We ‘d decide on the midrange SE toned, which prices $3090 more than the admittance-amount S model having said that consists of a hodgepodge of advantage that individuals explore worth ponying up for Keyless ignition with passive admission, Warmed front chairs with power changes for the driver, an 8.0″ touchscreen infotainment system with 3 additional USB ports, and Blind-spot computer screen with rear cross-targeted traffic attentive.

2020 VW Atlas Engine
The Atlas’s V-6 engine pulls this massive lug out and about merely excellent. A smooth-moving intelligent transmission manages gearchanges with soft aplomb- even though it is often uncertain about downshifting in decrease-speed city driving. The Atlas gives its 3.6-litre V-6 engine with the two-row Touareg SUV; in this article, it provides 276 horse strength and owns the entrance or all four rims via an 8-10-speed electronic transmission. The V-6 feels and appears to be processed, relocating nary a shiver into the cabin.

2020 VW Atlas Release Date And Price
For another $1800, the 2020 VW Atlas SE might be geared up with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. However, we ‘d put to the standard front-wheel-drive setup, which keeps the bottom part line at an inexpensive $35,915.

2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Exterior, Interior, Price, Release Date
New Post has been published on https://www.vwcartrend.com/2020-vw-atlas-cross-sport-exterior-interior-price-release-date/
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Exterior, Interior, Price, Release Date
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Exterior, Interior, Price, Release Date – As we noticed that 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport might be a new full-sizing truck produced in Volkswagen not often that thinking about helping to make a significant and significant truck we had to verify it on the right location. That information could be granted only from a person who works in Volkswagen, and this time that had been US chef design Doctor. Matthias Erb, who told us on previous Detroit Auto Show, which they could make a sizeable truck for US sector only. If that comes about, that truck could be Atlas, because the line was already on the industry, and implies largeness and massiveness.
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Exterior
As this information is dependent only on speculations and rumours, we can predict how 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport could resemble, on current models design and predictions. There are high probabilities could be the principal contender to Honda Ridgeline. Therefore we count on parallels using that model. This unibody design consists of the public details usually located on Volkswagen cars. Hunting from the front end there is massive two-nightclub grille with significant Brought first lighting fixtures, comparable to other VW cars. Beneath it is skinny mesh oxygen intake and completely moulded fog lights included in synthetic protection on the bottom part. The rear stop has smooth edges with modernly made equipment, and lighting and the full car includes unibody design, predicted with this vehicle.
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Exterior
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Interior
It is envisioned to see the modernly moulded cabin in Atlas Cross Sport, yet still the same as on other Volkswagen SUVs, which means simple cabin, with the toned dashboard, dominant edges, and distinct facial lines. As we forecast, it can be friends and family-welcoming car, with desired products for that, uses, as the car seats and the cabin turned out to be greater and a lot more relaxed. There are also a lot of similarities with Ridgeline in the field, way too, like design resolutions on the dash panel.
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Interior
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Engine
As the Atlas SUV is provided with two engines, smaller 2.-litre turbo-several cylinder with 238 hp and 3.6-litre VR6 engine, we now have the purpose to believe that 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport can get the very same drivers within the hood especially when we realize that these engines set VW SUV on the top notch of the handiest significant cars on the marketplace nowadays. Honda Ridgeline, on the opposite side, has 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine with 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. It may be matched with six-speed automatic transmission, for the highest fuel economy.
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport Engine
2020 VW Atlas Cross Sports Release Date And Price
All we mentioned here about 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport are only our predictions, but there are significant odds that could be on the marketplace in several years to can come

Test Drive: One Week With the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line Shows the Car’s Strengths
Tumblr media
If anyone still wants a sedan, this VW is one to get.
LOS ANGELES—When people ask me what my job is, I'm never quite sure what to tell them. I rarely use my official title, senior editor, because it's a bad habit in my industry that most writers are called editors. A lot of my colleagues use "automotive journalist," but I've never quite embraced it; when I think journalist, I think Woodward and Bernstein. "Car critic" is probably closest to the mark—like a movie critic or a food critic. The problem is that it sometimes rings hollow, specifically when there is a car about which I can offer no criticism. Such is the case with the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line I've just tested.
2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line: More Of The Same I'm sure I don't need to tell you the Passat has been a Volkswagen staple for decades. Back in 2012, VW split-off the North American Passat from the rest of the world, creating a bigger sedan that it built in its new factory in Tennessee. For 2020, the Passat got a "major-minor" update—basically new sheet metal (except the roof) and more equipment on the same old bones.
This drew criticism, because the new MQB platform, which underpins pretty much everything VW does, including the Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport, is a better-driving chassis. But that doesn't mean the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line's old platform is bad. Indeed, during my test of it, the 2020 Passat turned out to be nearly everything I expect from a German sedan: direct, engaging, and comfortable. The latter is particularly noteworthy, precisely because my tester was a top-of-the-range R-Line model with big 19-inch wheels which could have, but did not, degrade the ride quality.
Reining-In The 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line But I did say, "nearly everything I expect"? Because I managed to find one minor flaw: a bit of float over bumps at higher speeds. And higher speeds really were a bit of a problem for me. The 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line is powered by our old familiar friend, VW's 2.0-liter, turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine. (It's worth noting VW was an early adopter of the 2.0T format, and now that format is nearly universal.)
This faithful servant still delivers 174 hp, same as last year, but for 2020 VW bumped its torque, by 20 lb-ft, to 206. With its standard-fit six-speed automatic transmission, the 2020 Passat R-Line will get to 60 mph in a respectable 7.8 seconds, but it's the wall of torque (and, well, okay, perhaps a COVID-related lack of traffic) that got me in trouble—seems the Passat likes to sneak up past 80 mph, and that's where I started to feel the extra softness in the suspension. Not that I should be one to criticize—I too am showing softness with advanced age.
But the engine does return good fuel economy, and the big 18.5-gallon fuel tank, a relic from the days when the Passat was offered with a lusty-but-thirsty 280-hp V-6, gives it a nice long cruising range.
Inside, this 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line test-car is like a VW Greatest Hits album: Clear analog gauges (no video-screen dash option like on other VWs), three-dial climate controls, and a small but straightforward touchscreen stereo. Volkswagen installed a bunch of new safety tech for 2020, by the way; all Passats get collision warning with automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring, while the SE model and above get adaptive cruise, lane centering, and automatic high-beams
And let's not forget that old Passat staple, the limousine-sized back seat, which is one of the basic reasons why the North American Passat differs from the MQB-based car sold in other markets. God bless the cheeseburger!
The bottom line is, I've tested-driven and critiqued cars for a lot of years now, and when it comes to the basics of getting a family of four or five where they need to go, there aren't many cars that do it better than the Passat.
2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line: Where It Could Be Better Now, a lot of my fellow critics have found something to criticize—specifically the fact Volkswagen didn't move the Passat to that new MQB platform. No question there would have been advantages. I'm sure my one itty-bitty complaint about the ride could be ironed out, and the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line could probably get the fancy digital dashboard found in other VW models.
But I can also understand the reasons for sticking with the old platform, and they all come down to dollars and sense. Volkswagen has trumpeted its commitment to sedans in our market, but sedans are a dying breed, and we can understand the argument that it just doesn't make sense to sink too much money into the Passat.
And while the Passat isn't exactly a bargain—at least not at the higher trim levels—with a starting price below $24,000 and an all-in price of just more than $32,000, we can hardly accuse Volkswagen of price gouging. (Incidentally, in order to keep costs down, VW has gone the way of Honda: Most options have been eliminated, with the trim level--S, SE, R-Line, SEL--determining the Passat's equipment level.)
Well, it's true the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line might be a better car if it was on the MQB platform. Maybe it would be even more engaging to drive, or have a little more backseat room, or more up-to-date tech. Maybe it'd make a stronger stand against newer competitors like Toyota's Camry, Nissan's Altima, or Honda's crowd-pleasing Accord.
But the 2020 Volkswagen Passat driven for this test is solid—and this car critic simply can't find anything worthwhile to criticize.

The U.S.-Market Volkswagen Passat Sedan Is Being Killed in 2023
It’s a nerve-wracking time to be a sedan in the U.S. right now. The market is shifting away from four-door family cars toward SUVs and crossovers. The latest casualty in this move is the Volkswagen Passat, which will be discontinued in the U.S. by 2023, according to a report from Wards Auto.
“We’ve made a decision to cancel the Passat for the U.S. The sales trend is very firmly in favor of SUV models, as indicated by the success of the [Chattanooga-built] Atlas,” Volkswagen brand chief Ralf Brandstätter told Wards.
Production of the U.S.-market Passat will end at Volkswagen’s U.S. plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2023, coinciding with the all-electric Volkswagen ID4 SUV’s ramp-up to full capacity. (Keep in mind the American Passat is unique from the Euro-market example, which is a more premium product and closer to the luxurious Arteon VW sells here.) The ID4 is set to launch in 2021 with a starting price of $39,995 before applicable tax credits. Production of the global Passat sedan will continue in Germany and China for the European and Chinese markets.
In a class with solid competitors like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the Passat was never a hot seller. Volkswagen sold just 14,123 Passats in all of 2019—less than the number of Camrys Toyota sells in a month. That dismal performance is likely due in part to production of the last-gen Passat winding down to make way for the new 2020 Volkswagen Passat, which is a restyled version of the same old model, using the same platform.
The midsize sedan segment will continue to be a vital one in the U.S. for the foreseeable future, but the loss of another one of its members doesn’t help the case for cars in general.

2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport review: Streamlined SUV skimps on sport
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/2020-volkswagen-atlas-cross-sport-review-streamlined-suv-skimps-on-sport-2/
2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport review: Streamlined SUV skimps on sport
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A nip and tuck to the Atlas’ profile gets you the more athletic looking Cross Sport model.
Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow
The Volkswagen Atlas is a big, three-row beast of an SUV with its wide body and horizontal design elements. The 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport is only slightly less so. The new variant shrinks the SUV’s body slightly and tweaks the roofline for a sportier profile and more athletic curb appeal, allowing it to better do battle with the new Passport — itself a scaled-down version of the Atlas’ closest nemesis, the Honda Pilot.
Like
New profile looks better, doesn’t cost much space
Even basic cabin tech checks all the right boxes
Comfortable ride over rough surfaces
Don’t Like
Fuel economy is just OK
Lots of body movement at higher speeds
The Cross Sport lowers the Atlas’ roofline to 67.8 inches (down 2.3) and shortens the SUV’s overall length to 195.5 inches (5.2 less). The result, along with a bit of a nipping and tucking of the profile, is a much more muscular and athletic take on the standard Atlas’ stiff, brick-like aesthetic.
The slightly shorter length visually pushes the rear wheels out to the vehicle’s corners, giving the Cross Sport a more aggressive-looking stance, while the lower roofline and exaggerated wheel arches make the Atlas appear lower and leaner. Personally, I think the Cross Sport looks the way the Atlas should have all along.
Sculpting its sheetmetal saves this Atlas variant about 200 pounds, depending on the trim level, but the more svelte shape doesn’t help as much with aerodynamics and efficiency as I’d hoped. The Cross Sport still has the same 0.34 drag coefficient as its more squared-off sibling and largely the same fuel efficiency across the spectrum of engine options. At best, I’m talking 21 miles per gallon city, 24 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive four-cylinder. At the other end of the spectrum is the all-wheel-drive V6, at 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.
The underpinnings haven’t changed. The Cross Sport sits on the same 117.3-inch wheelbase with 8 inches of ground clearance and retains its wide boi status at 78.4 inches across. I’ve always thought it weird that the Atlas classifies as a midsize SUV despite its imposing curbside stature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Cross Sport V6 4Matic gains one combined mpg despite unchanged city and highway estimates, so there must be some small aerodynamic advantage being rounded off.
Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow
Of course, the tidier exterior design costs the Cross Sport a bit of interior volume, but not as much practical space as you might think. By the numbers, there’s 40.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 77.8 cubic feet with the seats folded flat. That’s a loss of 15.2 and 19 cubes, respectively, compared to the larger Atlas, but it’s all lost space near the ceiling. The Cross Sport still does a fantastic job swallowing up bulky items — including a 52-inch wide entertainment center — with room to spare.
Taller drivers and passengers may notice the loss of about 2 inches of headroom on both of the Cross Sport’s rows (39.4 inches front, 37.8 inches rear) and there’s no missing the lack of a third row option. There’s just no room for it in the Cross Sport’s shorter chassis.
Soft ride, relaxed performance
The Cross Sport looks more athletic, but it’s no more agile than before. The SUV’s ride is just as soft as the standard model and just as comfort-focused. Despite the reduced curb weight, the Cross Sport feels big with numb steering that lacks much of the car-like nimbleness of its competitors around town.
On the highway, the Atlas’ vague steering and soft suspension makes the SUV feel almost truck-ish. I constantly have to make small steering corrections to make up for bumps, dips or crosswinds nudging the Cross Sport to and fro. There’s a lot of vertical and lateral body movement at speed over my local (and very uneven) highways, meaning the SUV never really feels settled. It isn’t so fiddly as to feel unsafe or scary, but the Atlas requires just a bit more mental energy to keep centered within its lane than, say, our long-term Honda Passport — that’s not exactly what I mean when I say I want an engaging drive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With such a wide body, there often isn’t much wiggle room between the lane markers.
Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow
Two engines are available to Atlas Cross Sport buyers: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6, each mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Either can be had in front-wheel drive configuration or, optionally, Volkswagen’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.
My example’s V6 engine brings 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque to the party. Compared to the 2.0T, it’s got 41 extra ponies, but only 8 more pound-feet. In practice, the V6 doesn’t feel that much more potent on the road than the I4, possibly due in part to the automatic transmission’s comfort-tuned programming somewhat dulling responsiveness in favor of smoothness and economy.
Tech and safety
The Cross Sport features an identical list of standard and optional driver aid tech as the larger Atlas. There’s a good loadout of features including adaptive cruise control that works well in stop-and-go traffic, automatic emergency brake assist, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring and automatic high beams.
My example also features lane-keeping assist and lane-departure alerts that are unobtrusive and helpful. However, it doesn’t do as good a job holding the center line as Honda’s lane-keeping tech or Toyota’s now-standard Lane Tracing Assist, leaving the Atlas wandering somewhat between the markers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Atlas’ standard 8-inch display is home to smartphone connectivity and a refreshingly simple interface.
Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow
VW’s cabin tech is still among the best in the class, mostly because of its smartly chosen features and relative simplicity. There’s not much to the menu structure, so it never really gets awkward.
My example’s upgraded 8-inch display plays host to standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and is nicely positioned just a short reach from the driver’s seat. The optional navigation software gets me where I need to go without issue and works well with the voice recognition that Volkswagen’s running these days. If you’re feeling deja-vu from my previous Atlas review, that’s because this is the same setup you’ll find in the dashboards of nearly every new VW in the automaker’s lineup, and that’s not a bad thing.
Only the top-level SEL trim offers VW’s Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, which is a shame. The full-screen instrument cluster looks great. It’s not as flashy or powerful as Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital dashboard, but VW’s setup is still very customizable and worth considering.
2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport: Slightly smaller, much better looking
See all photos
Competition and price
The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport starts at $31,565 for the base 2.0T S model, including a $1,020 destination charge — that’s exactly a $1,000 savings over the larger, three-row model — and tops out at the $50,815 V6 SEL Premium R-Line with 4Motion all-wheel drive. The mid-tier SE trim is the sweet spot, getting you most of the creature comforts and safety tech, priced reasonably between $34,965 and the $43,260 as-tested price of this V6 SE with Technology, R-Line and 4Motion upgrades, as well as premium Aurora Red Chroma Metallic paint and a panoramic sunroof.
The Atlas Cross Sport rides comfortably, boasts a solid mix of features and tech and retains much of the standard Atlas’ spacious cargo and passenger capacity despite its more svelte shape. It’s also surprising just how much better the reshaped rear end looks. However, the Atlas Cross Sport isn’t my favorite ride in this class.
I’d like a tighter ride to go with the Cross Sporty looks — or at least the option for a sportier R-Line suspension to go with the badges and bumpers. For now, the Atlas Cross Sport’s primary competition is the Honda Passport which gets the nod from me thanks to its comparably robust tech and more car-like handling. It’s just more pleasant and less mentally taxing to drive. Toyota’s upcoming Venza will also prove to be an interesting cross-shop, depending on where the dedicated hybrid model’s price and efficiency lands.

The Station: Hertz files for bankruptcy, hailing “self-driving” scooters, Memorial Day travel
The Station is a weekly newsletter dedicated to all things transportation. Sign up here — just click The Station — to receive it every Saturday in your inbox.
Hi and welcome back to The Station. Memorial Day is this coming Monday, a holiday meant to honor military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Over the years, it has evolved for many Americans who use the three-day weekend to fire up the grill, go camping, head to the beach, local amusement park or take a road trip. It’s become the unofficial kickoff to the summer season — even though we still have more than three weeks of spring.
Every year around this time, AAA provides an estimate for travel over the weekend. For the first time in 20 years, AAA said it would not issue a Memorial Day travel forecast, as the accuracy of the economic data used to create the forecast has been undermined by COVID-19.
The travel forecast often reflects the state of the economy or at least certain aspects of it. For instance, Memorial Day 2009 holds the record for the lowest travel volume at nearly 31 million travelers. Last year, 43 million Americans traveled for Memorial Day Weekend, the second-highest travel volume on record since 2000, when the organization began tracking this data.
I will put my prognosticator hat on for a moment knowing I might very well be wrong (I’m sure ya’ll will remind me later). I expect this weekend to be a low travel holiday, but I fully anticipate this summer will mark the return of the road trip. And that’s not just my forecast for the U.S. I expect Europeans will stick closer to home and opt for road and possibly train travel over long haul flights for their summer holidays. That has all kinds of implications, positive and negative. And it’s why I’m going to spend some time in the coming weeks driving a variety of new SUV models in search of road trip worthy vehicles.
This past week I drove the 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport V6 SEL (premium trim), a more smaller and approachable version of the massive three-row Atlas. I will share a few thoughts about it next week. After that, I will be driving the 2020 Land Cruiser standard trim. Have a vehicle suggestion? Reach out and I’ll try to put it in my queue.
Reach out and email me at [email protected] to share thoughts, criticisms, offer up opinions or tips. You can also send a direct message to me at Twitter — @kirstenkorosec.
Shall we get down to it? Vamos.
Micromobbin’
Micromobility had some good action this week so let’s dive on in. Here in San Francisco, Bird’s Scoot redeployed 300 electric kick scooters. By Memorial Day weekend, Scoot will have 500 electric scooters available. Additionally, Scoot expanded its scooter service area to serve more parts of San Francisco.
Over in Atlanta, GoX and Tortoise teamed up to deploy teleoperated electric scooters. In Peachtree Corners, GoX riders can hail a scooter equipped with tech from Tortoise. As Keaks, aka Kirsten Korosec, explained earlier this week, riders can request a scooter to come to them and once they’re done, the scooter will drive itself back to a parking spot.
Meanwhile, in Europe, Tier brought integrated helmets to its electric scooters. The foldable helmets fit inside a box attached to the scooter below the handlebars. This month, Tier plans to deploy 200 scooters equipped with helmets in Paris and Berlin. Over the summer, Tier will deploy an additional 5,000 helmet-equipped scooters. Additionally, given concerns about COVID-19, Tier is experimenting with an antibacterial, self-disinfecting handlebar technology from Protexus. Tier is testing these handlebars in Paris and Bordeaux.
Also, don’t miss my analysis of why micromobility may come back stronger after the pandemic.

Deal of the week
Vroom, the online used car marketplace that has raised some $700 million since 2013, filed for an IPO this week. (Yes, IPOs qualify as deals in my book). It plans to trade on the Nasdaq under VRM with Goldman Sachs as lead underwriter.
Vroom is an interesting company that I’ve been writing about for years now. And there have been times that I wondered if it would fold altogether. The company managed to keep raising funds though, most recently $254 million in December 2019 in a Series H round that valued the company at around $1.5 billion.
A look at the S-1 shows modest growth, rising losses and slim gross margins. Eck!
Here’s a quick breakdown:
Vroom’s revenue grew 39.3% in 2019 compared to 2018. During that same period, its gross margin fell from 7.1% to 4.9%. The company’s net losses as a percent of revenue rose from 10% in 2018 to 12% in 2019. (That doesn’t include costs relating to “accretion of redeemable convertible preferred stock.” By counting the non-cash cost, add $13 million to Vroom’s 2018 net loss and $132.8 million to its 2019 figure.)
In the first quarter of 2020, Vroom generated revenue of $375.8 million, leading to gross profit of $18.4 million, or about 4.9% of revenue. It also reported a net loss of $41.1 million in the first quarter, putting it on a run-rate to lose even more money in 2020 than it did in 2019.
TechCrunch’s Alex Wilhelm takes a look under Vroom’s hood and digs into why the company is heading to the public markets during this volatile time. Check it out.
Other deals:
Missfresh, a Chinese grocery delivery company backed by Tencent, is closing in on $500 million in new funding.
Autonomous aviation startup Xwing locked in a $10 million funding round before COVID-19 hit. Now the San Francisco-based startup is using the capital to hire talent and scale the development of its software stack as it aims for commercial operations later this year — pending FAA approvals. The Series A funding round was led by R7 Partners, with participation from early-stage VC Alven, Eniac Ventures and Thales Corporate Ventures.
Fly Now Pay Later, a London-based fintech startup focused on travel, raised £5 million in Series A equity funding and another £30 million in debt funding.
French startup Angell has signed a wide-ranging partnership with SEB, the French industrial company behind All-Clad, Krups, Moulinex, Rowenta, Tefal and others. As part of the deal, SEB will manufacture Angell’s electric bikes in a factory near Dijon, France. SEB’s investment arm, SEB Alliance, is also investing in Angell. The terms of the deal are undisclosed, but Angell says it plans to raise between $7.6 and $21.7 million with a group of investors that include SEB.
Layoffs, business disruptions and people

Hertz filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Friday, a move we’ve been anticipating for awhile now. The bankruptcy protection stems from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Here’s why.
Once business trips and other travel was halted, Hertz was suddenly sitting on an unused asset — lots and lots of cars. It wasn’t just that the revenue spigot was turned off. Used car prices have dropped, further devaluing its fleet.
The company said that it has more than $1 billion in cash on hand, which it will use to keep the business operating through the bankruptcy process. Hertz also said its principal international operating regions, including Europe, Australia and New Zealand are not included in the U.S. Chapter 11 proceedings, nor are franchised locations.
Other layoffs:
Indian ride-hailing firm Ola has seen revenue drop by 95% in the last two months as India enforced a stay-at-home order for its 1.3 billion citizens in late March. You can guess what has happened as a result. Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said in an internal email the company is cutting 1,400 jobs in India, or 35% of its workforce in the home market.
India’s top food delivery startup Swiggy is cutting 1,100 jobs and scaling down some adjacent businesses as it looks to reduce costs to survive the coronavirus pandemic.
Here’s something on the “new” job front …
There’s been a lot of attention on autonomous delivery robots. These companies will most certainly struggle to become profitable. On-demand delivery is a tricky business. But COVID-19 might have inadvertently expanded the labor pool for these companies.
On-demand delivery startup Postmates has seen an increase in demand for its autonomous delivery robots known as Serve, which operate in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The company uses teleoperators, humans who remotely monitor and guide the autonomous robots. COVID-19 prompted Postmates to set up teleoperations centers within each employee’s home. Postmates sees potential to reach a new group of workers.
Tortoise, which we mentioned earlier in Micromobbin’, sees the same potential, according to its founder and CEO Dmitry Shevelenko.
A little bird
We hear (and see) things. But we’re not selfish. We share!
For those not familiar with “a little bird,” this is a periodic section that shares insider tips that have been vetted. This week comes out of the super-hyped world of on-demand delivery. It’s a business that might be seeing a lot of demand. But demand doesn’t always square with profitability.
Take Postmates for example. The company has raised about $900 million to date, including a $225 million round announced in October that valued the company at about $2.5 billion. But now it seems that common shares are trading at a 45% discount on the secondary market, according to our sources.
Early investors do take money off the table from time to time. But it can also indicate other troubles worth watching out for. Postmates filed confidential IPO paperwork in February 2019, but those plans have been delayed. The company is also fighting for market share against giants like Doordash. A Uber-Grubhub merger would put it even with DoorDash.
That leaves Postmates in a distant fourth. Dan Primack over at Axios noted “multiple sources” have told him the company is seeking raise around $100 million in new private-market funding.
Other notable bits
Here are a few other items that caught my eye …
Amazon is joining India’s online food delivery market just as top local players Swiggy and Zomato reduce their workforce to steer through the coronavirus pandemic and months after Uber Eats’ exit from the nation.
GM has a “big team” working on an advanced version of its hands-free driving assistance system, Super Cruise, that will expand its capability beyond highways and apply it to city streets, the automaker’s vice president of global product development Doug Parks said during a webcasted interview at Citi’s 2020 Car of the Future Symposium.
Cake, the Stockholm-based mobility startup, debuted the Kalk OR, a 150-pound, battery-powered two-wheeler engineered for agile off-road riding and available in a street-legal version.
Nauto has launched a new feature in its driver behavior learning platform that is designed to detect imminent collisions to help reduce rear-end accidents. It works by taking in driver behavior data, vehicle movement, traffic elements, and contextual data to help predict and prevent collisions.
Organizers of the New York International Auto Show, once hoping to hold the rescheduled event in August, have decided to scrap the entire year. The show has been officially canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers announced Friday. The next show will take place April 2 to April 11, 2021. Press days will be March 31 and April 1.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company is raising the price of its “Full Self-Driving” package of its Autopilot driver assistance package by around $1,000 on July 1. This has happened before and it will, I promise happen again. The Verge has a good breakdown of why. I, of course, care about the financial reasons. Right now, Tesla can only count about half of the revenue it generates from FSD. The other half is deferred revenue — money that Tesla can recognize on its balance sheet at a later date.
Wunder Mobility, the Hamburg-based startup that provides a range of mobility services, from carpooling to electric scooter rentals, announced the launch of Wunder Vehicles and a business-to-business partnership with Chinese EV manufacturer Yadea. Wunder Vehicles is a service that gives customers a toolkit of sorts to launch a fleet-sharing company. The company provides software, a marketing plan, data, financing options and the electric vehicles, which will come from Yadea.
Rad Power Bikes unveiled the newest iteration of its electric cargo bike. The RadWagon 4 has been fully redesigned from the ground up. Trucks VC’s Reilly Brennan recently described this on Twitter as the possible F-150 of micromobility. We hope to test it soon.

Europe and the U.S. Share a Lot, Except When It Comes to Cars
Tumblr media
The 2020 Geneva International Motor Show is over before it began. A victim of Covid-19, manufacturers have retooled to unveil new releases “digitally.” We Americans may shrug our shoulders because unlike viruses, many European cars and brands can’t cross continents.Sure, the new Kia Sorento, Volkswagen Golf GTI and Mercedes E-Class that were scheduled to debut on the Geneva show floor will be coming to America, as will the BMW i4 electric sedan that was to be shown as a concept. But the new Seat Leon hatchback and Renault Captur Hybrid will be no-shows here in the United States. There are many reasons there will be no Dacia Dusters in Delaware driveways.First off, Americans are not starved for choices. As the second-largest automotive market in the world after China, the United States has dozens of brands to browse.“As attractive as the U.S. market is, it’s saturated,” said Stephanie Brinley, principal analyst for IHS Markit. “In the States, consumers are confused with all of the choices; it can be overwhelming.”True enough. In the past 25 years or so, Suzuki, Daewoo and Daihatsu have left our shores. Scion, Geo, Saab, Eagle, Plymouth, Mercury, Saturn, Pontiac and Oldsmobile have joined Studebaker on that great off ramp. For some European brands, coming to the United States means new dealerships and parts distribution. That’s expensive. Vehicles must pass our government emissions, safety and lighting requirements. That’s very expensive. And how does a company market an expensive product to consumers who are loyal to existing brands? That’s bottomless-money-pit expensive.Even with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ existing network of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep franchisees, it has struggled to get Americans to fully embrace the Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands. A newcomer to the U.S. market would need a Caddy full of euros to introduce a brand. And by Caddy, I mean the Volkswagen Caddy, which is a small van used for deliveries and family hauling. And no, we don’t get it either.People of each continent use their vehicles differently. “Americans like large vehicles and S.U.V.s that do 100 percent of everything,” Ms. Brinley of IHS said. “We plan for the most extreme-use case, while Europeans are more comfortable squeezing things into a small space.”While traveling in Slovenia recently, I met the musician and Wudisban Records executive Marko Kocjan, known as Emkej, who drives a Skoda Octavia wagon, a VW product the size of the Golf SportWagen (that just left our market because of sluggish sales). In Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Octavia is a popular, though larger, choice.“Me and my fiancée, Ajda Perme, came to the conclusion we needed a safer car and wanted extra room in the back for snowboarding and transporting music equipment to concerts. I love its space.”American musicians would probably find the Octavia wagon far too small to haul keyboards, guitars, drums and amps. But like many European buyers, Mr. Kocjan makes the Skoda work.“It is a car we can afford, plus the tax rate and fuel costs are in our range,” he said. Many European countries tax vehicles on size, weight, engine size and fuel consumption at a far higher rate than our states. So while there’s a more powerful 2-liter engine, Mr. Kocjan’s Octavia is driven by the smaller, more efficient 1.6-liter diesel with a five-speed manual transmission (rowing your own gears is much more popular in Europe).Americans would find that powertrain pokey and inconvenient. It might be more appealing to Missourians — who pay around $2 per gallon, according to AAA — if they had to pay triple the price. That’s what Italians pay when filling up. You’re more likely to see Bigfoot sipping espresso there than a thirsty Chevrolet Tahoe. And size matters to both continents, just not in the same way. No one needs to point out that America likes its trucks. Ford’s F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (not just pickup truck) in America for over 30 years, but it is not officially sold in Europe. With low fuel prices, we’re more likely to pick something larger and more comfortable to cover that ground. “We have a lot more room to spread out,” said Ray Telang, U.S. automotive leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers. “The U.S. market is filled with buyers who value size, they want S.U.V.s. The footprint of the U.S. has more rural areas. We are not as constrained by space.“The European buyer drives narrower roads, pays a lot more for fuel and has to find a place to store the car in more crowded cities. Smaller works better there.”But Mr. Telang also said the tastes were merging a bit. “As crossovers become more fuel efficient, the demand is accelerating in Western Europe, just not to the same level as in the U.S.”Hatchbacks and wagons have always been popular choices overseas, and it can be argued those are close cousins to crossovers when it comes to usability and practicality.Generally, European S.U.V.s are smaller than three-row models such as the Chevy Traverse, Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander that we buy in droves. Ford is a popular brand in Europe, but there are few Explorers there. And you will see far more Jeep Renegades overseas than Wranglers. The huge VW Atlas that’s built in Chattanooga, Tenn., has been rebadged the Teramont in many foreign markets. And even though VW makes the midsize pickup Amarok, it’s not sold in our truck-loving country. And then there’s design. In the home of the brave, we’re timid when it comes to styling. Our roads are crammed with Honda Accords, Toyota Camrys and Nissan Rogues that roll with safe designs. We would rather be seen in a Pontiac Aztek than the Fiat Multipla, which is best described as the only transportation device with a muffin top. A Citroën Berlingo would be roomy enough for our market, but the sheet metal would probably be ostracized.Europeans are often willing to try different things, like the old three-wheeled BMW Isetta and Reliant Robin. The elfin Smart car made a noble stab at our market, but is leaving it while remaining in Europe. The oddly cladded flanks of Citroen’s C4 Cactus crossover would probably not generate much U.S. interest. We don’t see Vauxhall or Opel cars circling cul-de-sacs, but the best of Europe’s automotive industries have influenced our cars in many ways. Volvo and Saab pioneered many safety technologies we now take for granted. BMW fundamentally changed the way cars performed with firm but comfortable suspensions. It forced Cadillac (which has a minor presence overseas) to abandon its soft floaty ride for a much crisper dynamic. Americans wouldn’t rule out Peugeots or Skodas because of the way they drive. On my last visit to Europe, I enjoyed the dynamics of a rental Renault Clio. The small four-door hatchback was comfortable on the highway and attacked curves with spunk. The small engine did not pack much punch, but I appreciated its efficiency after pulling into gas stations with fuel prices at $1.45 a liter. Yeah, remember, there are nearly four of those in a gallon. It’s human nature to desire forbidden fruit, but maybe it’s best we stick to what we have. Automakers know their markets very well.Mr. Kocjan of Slovenia said: “I wanted a Cadillac Escalade when I was a kid, but now I see how big they are and I don’t know. I would love to have a Mustang … for a few days.”Years ago, an Opel Insignia wagon cruising through Rome caught my wife’s eye. She was tempted to buy when the stylish machine ended up stateside rebadged as the Buick Regal TourX, but she did not pull the trigger. That’s what counts. After just a few years it’s been discontinued, partly because of, you guessed it, lack of sales. Read the full article
