Blume has made significant changes to the company, including putting the brakes on the Trinity electric car project, pulling out from backing autonomous driving startup Argo AI, and shelving a yearly investment update. However, his shift in management style is perceived as slower than that of his predecessor. Volkswagen is preparing to launch several new battery-powered models, including Lamborghini’s Urus SUV, which is a potentially attractive candidate for an IPO. The carmaker shipped 572,100 electric vehicles last year, almost double European rival Stellantis's sales. However, Tesla delivered 1.31 million electric vehicles, putting VW at risk of falling behind competitors.     The pressure is on for Blume to reveal more about his plans for VW Group, particularly with regards to its electric-vehicle output, at the upcoming earnings report and capital markets day. Blume's focus so far has been on cleaning house and scrutinizing costly projects initiated by his predecessor, but investors are eager for more concrete plans and strategies. At a recent meeting with top managers, Blume ordered exercises to strategize on how to pitch an IPO for brands such as Lamborghini, Bentley, Skoda, and Seat. However, some attendees walked away with little new insight into Blume's strategy for the brands, citing a lack of up-to-date financial figures, spending priorities, and new models. Blume has also put the brakes on the Trinity electric-car project due to software and cost concerns, and walked back Diess's all-or-nothing focus on batteries with a pledge to pursue e-fuels as well. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about Audi's lack of a robust pipeline of new models, and the main VW brand's lagging profitability. As Blume attempts to shift the company his way, the competition is speeding ahead, with Tesla making plans to build a new EV factory in Mexico and reiterating a pledge to cut production costs. While VW is preparing to introduce several new battery-powered models, it still lags behind Tesla in terms of deliveries. Blume has made some progress, with VW's shares soaring recently after the company said it expects revenue to jump as much as 15% this year. However, investors are still waiting for more concrete plans and strategies to be revealed.

Volkswagen launches WeShare all-electric car sharing service

Making good on plans revealed last year to debut an EV-exclusive car sharing service, Volkswagen is actually launching its fleet for customers – debuting WeShare, a new shared service similar to Car2Go or GM’s Maven, but featuring only all-electric vehicles. Initially, WeShare will be available only in Berlin, where it’s launching today with 1,500 Volkswagen e-Golf cars making up the on-demand rental fleet.

The plan is to add 500 more cars to the available population by early next year, specifically the e-up! electric city company car, and then it’ll also play host to the brand new ID.3 fully electric car when that’s officially launched. VW is still targeting the middle of next year for a street date for that vehicle, which is part of its all-new ID line of vehicles designed from the ground-up based on its next-generation electric vehicle platform. In terms of new geographies, WeShare will look to launch In Prague (in partnership with VW Group sub-brand Skoda) and also in Hamburg, both some time in 2020.

WeShare has a coverage area that includes the Berlin city centre and a little bit beyond the Ringbahn train line that encircles it. The cars are available in a “free-floating” arrangement, meaning they’ll be free to pickup and park wherever public parking is available. This one-way model, which is the one used by competitor Car2go, is distinct from the round-trip style rentals preferred by Zipcar, for instance. It’s more convenient for customers, but more of a headache for operators, who have to worry about ensuring cars remain in the rental zone and are parked appropriately and legally.

WeShare will also take responsibility for recharging the vehicles as needed, and will do so using the public charging network that’s available in Berlin, but later on it will seek to incentive actual users of the system to charge up when vehicles need it.

Car sharing, especially one-way, has had a hit-and-miss track record to date. Car2go shuttered operations in Toronto and Chicago, for instance, due to incompatibility with city operations regarding parking in the case of Toronto, and rampant cases of fraud in Chicago that resulted in cars being used to commit crimes. VW notes in a release that in Berlin, however, the number of car sharing users has grown from 180,000 people in 2010 to 2.46 million in early 2019.

Last year, VW said the two mobility service operations, which offer very different service models, will work together in future.

Tesla Teardown Scares Competitors: ‘We Cannot Do This’

A teardown of the Tesla Model 3 found Tesla is years ahead of the competition on AI and self-driving – as much as six years ahead by one estimate. The module — released last spring and found in all new Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles — includes two custom, 260-sq.-millimeter AI chips. Tesla developed the chips on its own, along with special software designed to complement the hardware. The computer powers the cars’ self-driving capabilities as well as their advanced in-car “infotainment” system.

  I’m kidding you guys, I really like the new look of their logo. I really need to quit on these puns. 

  We all know and love Slack and loved the liveliness of their logo. I genuinely can say that I vouch for both logos! But let’s hear what Slack themselves have to say about it.

  “Our first logo was created before the company launched. It was distinctive, and playful, and the octothorpe (or pound sign, or hash, or whatever name by which you know it) resembled the same character that you see in front of channels in our product.

I was browsing around and found the press kit information for the 2020 VW GTI for the US. Did some reading and was a little confused. I didn't find anywhere in the reading any information about the new digital instrument cluster we've been seeing in the recent 2020 Golf debut. Do you think this means the 2020 GTI isn't getting this interior refresh update?

Also the press kit shows the date for October 3rd, 2019. The 2020 Golf made its debut on October 24th and they usually release the GTI a bit after that date?
