One of the best things about electric cars in 2023 is that we are now seeing 1st generation models from the “early years” being improved, revised and facelifted. For the early-adopters in the UK’s EV market, we are grateful for those consumers and businesses for having the foresight and courage to invest into all-electric technology in 2018 / 2019 / 2020, when little was known on how good this form of transport would be (and when public charging infrastructure was still in its early inception). And VW’s electric Golf replacement, the ID.3, was first shown to the world in 2016 before being pushed into production in 2019 with deliveries taking place around 2020 around Europe (including the UK). As one would expect, the ID3 was fairly popular, amassing some 11,032 registrations in 2021 (it was the 3rd best-selling EV in the UK) followed by becoming the 4th best-selling UK EV with 9,178 registrations in 2022! (see SMMT for more details - https://media.smmt.co.uk/). Launching with a Pure battery (45 kWh), Pro battery (58 kWh) and Pro S configuration (77 kWh), VW’s all-electric hatchback filled a necessary hole in the UK’s automotive market, which was historically dominated by SUVs and luxury / prestige options. Winning awards, like the Which? Best Buy of 2023 (https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/new-and-used-cars/volkswagen-id-3-2020), does prove that this is very much the zero-emission Golf equivalent.
But the “future of driving” is not a completed model and the German group have now confirmed a series of external, integral and technological improvements to this popular EV (see VW - https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/electric-and-hybrid/electric-cars/the-new-id3.html). As the “evolution of electric mobility” continues, the brand have confirmed some truly existing updates including:
Exterior - new colours such as Dark Olivine Green, sharper profile at the front together with new tail light clusters and dynamic turn signals plus IQ.Light LED matrix headlights set to be offered. New alloy options including the 19” Wellington and 20” Sanya alloys, a new Exterior Package will allow drivers to add LED matrix headlights with automatic lighting control, LED tail lights, illuminated strip between headlights and tinted rear windows. An Exterior Packages PLUS includes a panoramic roof and sun blind;
Interior - increased options on the dash and door trim, together with higher quality finish. Ability to upgrade to the optional electric seats with massage function and high-quality fabric. New panoramic glass roof with “heavenly views” and sunblind; and
Technology and safety - 8-colour ambient lighting, Travel Assist with adaptive lane guidance and predictive cruise control, Emergency Assist, Area View with 4 cameras, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist and Park Assist Plus can all be added to your new ID3.
Not unlike many other brands, the ID.3 will be utilising over-the-air updates for continual improvements coupled with the We Connect ID app for synergising your vehicle to your mobile device. Many EV customers enjoy the facility to start and stop charging, or warm their vehicle, from the comfort of the app.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Review: How the Hot Hatch Icon Stays Relevant After 45 Years
The Iconic Hot Hatch Returns: Inside the Latest Golf GTI
As an ardent fan who’s owned three GTIs over the last 15 years, few new car launches get me as excited as a new generation of the iconic hot hatch. The Mk8 2022 model ushers the GTI into a high-tech new era while retaining that raw, analogue driving feel intrinsic to its DNA.
A Brief History of an Icon
Ever since the first Mk1 GTI introduced the concept of an attainable, performance-oriented “hot hatch” to the masses in 1976, driving enthusiasts have had a new affordable toy. My first was a handed-down Mk2 from the late 80s, complete with plaid cloth seats cramping four friends during high school cruises along winding backroads (sorry Mom!). But as I upgraded over the next decade from a Mk4 to Mk6, power, tech and refinement increased without losing that playful spirit.
Mk8 Brings Big Upgrades Under a Familiar Shape
You’d be forgiven for not immediately noticing the Mk8 as all-new – the rounded silhouette and C-pillar “kink” are trademark GTI. But under the skin lies the biggest overhaul yet, sitting on VW’s latest MQB platform packing upgraded systems. Options like matrix LED headlights, a digital cockpit and driver assistance systems bring the GTI clearly into the 2020s. Yet a multi-function perforated leather wheel and trademark plaid seats keep that classic identity. More Power with Serious efficiency GTI fans care most about what’s under the hood, and the Mk8’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine adds 13 hp for a total 241 hp and 273 lb-ft torque - hugely usable grunt. My DSG test car hit 60mph in under 6 seconds thanks to that immediate shove, while delivering 34 mpg highway. And the optional performance exhaust pops and crackles just enough to satisfy when revved, without annoying the neighbors constantly. Balanced, Playful Handling Remains Core Strength Through sweeping curves of my favorite SoCal canyon routes, the GTI stayed planted and lively. The new VAQ limited-slip differential meant I could really lean on the accurate steering and impressive grip levels from wider tires before gentle understeer curbed my momentum. Adaptive dampers on certain trims add greater compliance in comfort mode too. It’s still the trusty Front-wheel drive balance that makes the GTI so satisfying to chuck around bends. Gearbox Options to Suit Any Driver Stick-shift fans can rejoice as VW retained the standard 6-speed manual for ultimate involvement, with auto rev-matching helping smooth shifts. But most will opt for the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic that suits the GTI’s torque-rich character - snappy, smart shifts to better accelerate but still highly responsive using paddles. I’d welcome the manual’s added driver connection, but won’t mourn losing the DSG’s convenience in traffic.
How Rivals Compare
Having tested the latest Civic Type R and Hyundai i30 N Performance, the Mk8 GTI keeps pace with these FWD heavies while undercutting entry prices. The Honda and Hyundai build on front-drive with their less-sophisticated platforms by adding power or handling sharpness – turning up extremes where the GTI takes a more holistic approach. All three deliver huge grins, but the GTI remains that all-weather, all-condition dynamo.
Why it Matters
As electric swells, SUVs dominate and autonomous looms, few cars engage a driver’s senses like the 2022 GTI. It's an icon that helped define the hot hatch formula of blending real-world practicality with responsive handling, communicative feedback and usable performance. The Mk8 carries that torch, with a maturity that should woo enthusiasts for another generation. Few cars so consistently deliver driving joys with such an infectious spirit as the GTI for the money. May 2020 (6/10/20)
Oy vey. What a month May has been. So many things are going on in the world right now; COVID-19 was still wreaking havoc on the world, some places started to open up with limitations, and a terrible racial injustice happened in the USA which sparked protests and unfortunately, roiting. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the tragedy. I recognize that I am in a place of privilege, and I'm doing all I can to listen and learn as much as I can. At the beginning of the month, I finally got my dream car! A 1974 VW Beetle. I love it so much and can't wait to get it fixed up. My mental health has been suffering lately. I haven't been making the best choices for my diet and I'm starting to notice the results of that size and health-wise. My depression has been flaring up and I've been trying to take it easy and do what I can to take care of myself. Because of these things, I'm getting my motivation back to making improvements in my life to better my health. I'll be making changes to my diet, cutting out energy drinks again, and trying out adding more natural supplements into the rotation. I had finished four books in May. All of them were ones I haven't read before. Three library books (two physical and one audio) and one from my own shelves, that will be donated to my library soon. You can find reviews for all four in separate posts on the blog, if you are interest of my thoughts on them or you can find my ratings and reviews on my Goodreads page. I'm hoping to get more books finished in June but we will see. I am currently five books ahead of my Goodreads challenge so I'm not feeling rushed. My crafting mojo did pick up a tiny bit this past month. I finished spinning up my Hobbledehoy Battlings in the Electric colorway. I got about 422 yards of lace to light fingering weight, single-ply yarn. I had one finished knitting project. My Slipstream socks by Stephanie McIntosh are finally done! This is a pattern from Knitty, Spring/Summer 2013 that involves lots of little cables and slip stitches. I loved the way these how turned out but knitting them was a pain in the butt. The yarn is John Arbon Textiles Exmoor Sock in the Midnight colorway and it has a bit of a fuzzy halo to it which isn't the best thing to knit this pattern in. I had started knitting a pair of Mercury socks with this yarn a couple of years ago that just didn't work out. But I'm happy that I found a pattern for it after all. For sewing finished objects, I have three new tops! I'm hoping that June will be kind to us all and that 2020 will stop it's nonsense already. I'm wishing you all the best and that you accomplish all of your goals of the month. Until next time!

2020 VW Electric Car Review, Feature, Release Date
New Post has been published on https://www.vwcartrend.com/2020-vw-electric-car-review-feature-release-date/
2020 VW Electric Car Review, Feature, Release Date
2020 VW Electric Car Review, Feature, Release Date – Volkswagen is increasing on its electric car method, it reported at a press function in Dresden, Germany on Monday. The company announced plans to build up 27 electric cars on its coming MEB affordable electric-car architecture by 2022 in an work it requests “Electric for all those.” Those include things like cars previously introduced, these kinds of as the ID small hatchback after 2019; the ID Crozz compact crossover vehicle in 2020; and the exciting sport of the timeless Microbus in 2022, the ID Buzz. VW will build up yet another 22 models on the platform, automobiles which may not have been diagnosed.
2020 VW Electric Car Review
Volkswagen calls its 2020 VW Electric Car design MEB, a German acronym for “modular electric toolkit,” and announces it will be as transformative as the company’s move from the rear-engine Beetle to the front-wheel-drive Golf 40 years ago. As these kinds of, it could stand for the 3 rd trimester in VW’s living, right after 40 many years of Beetle manufacturing in the 20th century and another 40 many years of drinking water-cooled, front-wheel-drive-dependent interior-combustion cars given that.
2020 VW Electric Car Exterior
The MEB is just one of the most critical jobs in the history of Volkswagen-a electronic milestone, similar to the move from the Beetle to the GolfAt the computer-day occasion, VW proved a skeletal model of the MEB platform that will underpin most of its upcoming electric models around the world. Company managers arranged ideas at the Electric for those function to sell off 100,000 ID hatchbacks and 50,000 more electrics using their company brands by 2020.
Christian Senger, VW Group’s travel of 2020 VW Electric Car, mentioned electric cars based upon the MEB architecture would combine speedy-asking, and promised an 80% charge in approximately 30 a matter of minutes. Volkswagen has pointed out the cars are going to have about 250 kilometres of range in between expenses. The cars maintain the road rather well thanks to the smooth battery power in the floorpan. The space inside is much more nice-we are making significant headway with the perception of spaciousness.
2020 VW Electric Car Interior
If the approaching ID Buzz is to have the form of space inside of that the unique Microbus do, that progress will likely be essential. The MEB electric structures are most likely to spawn new electric models from Volkswagen’s less expensive European brand names, Seating and Skoda, as nicely as from Volkswagen and Audi. The company’s luxury brand names, Porsche and Audi, will also use more electric architectures of their particular for much larger, more powerful models.
2020 VW Electric Car Concept
Porsche has explained the Taycan will be able to ask for at 350 kilowatts, plenty of to rejuvenate 240 kilometres of range in 20 minutes. By 2025, Porsche and Audi can have a variety of new Electric Cars on a joint structure acknowledged as the Premium Platform Electric, which includes about 850 technical engineers taking care of it involving the two manufacturers.
It is set to help and support each sedan and crossovers of various sizes and finally to supplant the C-BEV as well as perhaps J1 websites. Audi is assumed to have two models on the platform, and Porsche 1 to get started with. Porsche may also be operating on its design for electric sports cars because of to arrive someday immediately after 2025.

Science and Chemistry Classes
First came the beeping alarms and the dashboard lights warning that something had gone haywire. Then the driver's side windows suddenly and mysteriously rolled down. Kendall Heiman's Volkswagen SUV then pulled the scariest stunt of all: It abruptly braked for no reason.
Heiman, a clinical social worker in Lawrence, Kansas, was driving her 15-year-old son to a class on Jan. 5 when her 2021 Atlas Cross Sport went bonkers. The malfunctions turned a normally routine two-mile round trip into a white-knuckle ordeal.
"It literally feels like the car is possessed," Heiman said. "I'm not feeling like I'm driving my car. My car is driving me."
Heiman's experience, it turns out, wasn't unique. Since late 2020, 47 VW owners have complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the same glitches in their 2020 and 2021 VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs. Some drivers reported that they narrowly escaped collisions, though a review of the complaints found no reports of crashes.
In a statement, NHTSA said it has been gathering information from VW about the problem and is monitoring complaints and other data sources. The agency hasn't opened a formal investigation. And it would have to collect and analyze additional data before it could seek a recall.
Complaints about unexpected braking involving the VW SUVs began in September of 2020, eight months before Heiman bought her SUV, NHTSA's records show.
In a statement, Volkswagen said it is working on the problem but stopped short of saying it's recalling the affected vehicles.
"VW is aware of concerns involving faulty door wiring harnesses in certain Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles," the company said. "We are working closely with NHTSA regarding the next steps towards identifying the affected vehicles."
After her SUV's unexpected braking on Jan. 5, Heiman initially kept driving, figuring that the problem was a "bizarre fluke." The SUV and a VW app flashed malfunction alerts, she said, but neither displayed a message to stop driving the vehicle.
Her Cross Sport braked unexpectedly a few more times that day, but she was able to override it with the gas pedal. Heading into a roundabout on the way home with her son the same day, the SUV abruptly braked and came to a complete stop, Heiman said, and another SUV narrowly missed rear-ending her. She shut the engine off and restarted it to override what she thinks was a malfunction of automatic emergency braking.
Jan. 5 was the first time she had encountered the problem with the Cross Sport, which she bought new in May 2021.
Once home, Heiman called her dealer's service department and got an appointment the next day. On the way there, she said, the SUV braked mysteriously again while exiting a two-lane highway.
"They didn't tell me it wasn't safe to drive to the dealer," she said.
In the shop, a mechanic detected a problem with a wiring harness in the driver's door, but she was told there weren't any parts to fix it. (Electrical shorts in wiring harnesses can cause multiple problems in vehicles, including brake activation.)
After discussing the safety risks with her, the dealership arranged for a rental car, Heiman said, and eventually the use of a new all-wheel-drive VW SUV.
The same day, Heiman reported the problem to VW in an online chat and was referred to a regional manager who was of little help, she said.
VW declined to comment on Heiman's assertions.
On Jan. 12, Heiman complained to NHTSA but said she never heard back from the agency. (NHTSA says it reviews all complaints but in most cases doesn't respond directly to them.)
For more than two months, Heiman said, her burnt orange Cross Sport, which had 12,600 miles on it and had cost $45,000, sat at the dealership waiting for the part. But late last week, after a reporter contacted the dealership, Heiman received a call telling her that the part had come in and that her vehicle had been repaired.
Others who filed complaints with NHTSA wrote that dealers told them they were out of loaner cars and that they should keep driving their vehicles.
"They also could not guarantee that my parking brake would not engage again while the car was in drive, but did not want to offer me a rental car because Volkswagen doesn't consider it a 'safety issue,' " one unidentified owner from Sidney Center, New York, wrote in a complaint.
Heiman's experience with Volkswagen made her worry about others who have encountered the same problems with the same VW models. She wonders why the automaker and government safety regulators haven't recalled them.
If there is a recall, it's not clear how many vehicles would have to be repaired. In 2020 and 2021, VW sold 203,000 of both models combined.
Many owners wrote in complaints that the automatic emergency braking system had abruptly stopped their Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs for no reason. Safety advocates say the new technology, which uses cameras and computers to detect obstacles and stop or slow down if a driver doesn't react, shows great promise to prevent crashes.
But the technology is also causing concerns for automakers. NHTSA recently opened investigations into unexpected braking by the systems in some Honda and Tesla vehicles. It has been investigating Nissan Rogue small SUVs since 2019.
In documents about the Honda investigation, NHTSA said that six people complained of crashes with minor injuries.
"Inadvertent or unexpected braking activation while driving can cause unexpected speed reductions that can lead to increased vulnerability to rear end impact collisions," the agency wrote.
Investigations often lead to recalls. But they can take months or even years to complete.
NHTSA is working on developing rules that will require automatic emergency braking system on all new light vehicles and heavy trucks. In addition, automakers have agreed to make the system standard on most of their models by September of this year.
"We all want to have technology," said Michael Brooks, chief counsel for the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety. "But if it doesn't work and it actually causes other safety issues like phantom braking, then it suggests they need a bit of a performance standard for all of these AEB systems."

Banking for Impact
from Dirk Schönmacher, Professor of Banking & Finance, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam
C.Companies are influenced by new disruptive and complex social trends such as climate change, the energy transition and social inequality. Still, few companies have begun developing strategies that are geared towards creating long-term value, not just for shareholders but for all stakeholders.
introduction
This article summarizes a new strategy model to help companies create long-term value. This model is helpful in understanding the transformation process, which is differentiated according to industries and individual companies, and can be used as part of strategic planning. It also enables assessments of the willingness of individual companies and business units to transition across sectors – and identifies pioneers and laggards.
Banks can use the model to assess how future-proof their loan portfolios are. This assessment begins with a review of your customers’ willingness to transition. Banks can accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy by incorporating social and environmental factors into their credit criteria: Banking for Impact.
Strategy for the transition
Leading companies develop strategies for recording social trends that are relevant for their product and service portfolio. We have a . created Strategy model to support the strategy process (Kurznack, Schoenmaker and Schramade, 2021) 1. The first step is to identify the relevant trends for a particular industry. Taking the automotive industry as an example, the decisive trend is the transition from internal combustion engines to electric cars due to the need to reduce CO2 emissions. Figure 1 shows this transition. The solid line illustrates the transition curve from 2010 with no demand for electric cars to 2030 with all-electric cars.
The second step is to assess each company’s ability to execute the strategy. Do they have the necessary skills – in the form of intellectual capital, manufactured capital (machinery), human capital, and financial capital – to adapt to the new product demand in good time? Figure 1 shows that Tesla is on the transition curve and can therefore meet the demand for electric cars. Volkswagen, on the other hand, is lagging behind and can only halfway meet the demand for electric cars. The difference in performance is summarized in the Bloomberg article “VW boss warns the troops: We don’t want to end up like Nokia”: “Volkswagen is at a critical point. It weathered the pandemic relatively well but is concerned that cases will pick up again. It has electric cars on the market, but it is way behind Tesla. And it has a huge scale of production, but urgently needs to rethink its vehicles as rolling software devices. It is this last edition that CEO Herbert drives home with the more than 635,000 employees at VW. The skill transition from industrial power to software literacy will be an immense challenge for automakers who are expansive, conscious, and, as some say, ripe for upheaval. Car companies that do something wrong risk ending up like this Nokia – failed hardware manufacturers doomed to failure by more agile and technologically savvy upstarts. ”(Rauwald, Patel and Thomas, 2020) 2.
The third and final step is to examine the value implications. Tesla is ahead of its competitors in transitioning to electric driving, which adds to its rating. Volkswagen is lagging behind, which lowers its rating. In our model, we offer a more detailed approach to assessing the relative valuations of companies in a sector based on their willingness to transition. The business-as-usual (BAU) scenario of continuing to only produce cars with internal combustion engines is becoming increasingly obsolete as the demand for these cars is quickly being replaced by electric cars. Traditional automakers become stranded assets if they don’t change their strategies in a timely manner.
Is your loan portfolio sustainable?
How can banks use the findings from our strategy model? At the corporate level, sustainable lenders seek out their borrowers for long-term value creation. The closer a borrowing company is to the optimal transition curve, the higher the rating and the lower the risk. This justifies lower cost of capital (ie lower credit spread) for more sustainable companies. Banks can accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy by incorporating social and environmental factors into their credit criteria.
At the portfolio level, banks can position their clients in relation to their respective sectoral transition curves. So, for each sector, they create a transition graph that shows how far their borrowers have progressed in that particular sector and identifies leaders and laggards. This information can in turn be used to analyze the credit risks and ratings of these companies. As already discussed, latecomers receive correspondingly higher interest rates and lower valuations. At the portfolio level, banks can use this information to adjust sector and country allocations in their loan portfolios.
A key takeaway from our model is that banks should focus not only on the front runners, but also on the laggards. In the energy transition, for example, banks, like other financial institutions, proudly announce their increased lending to renewable energy companies. However, a full picture will only emerge when banks also provide insight into reducing lending related to fossil fuels. A typical bank may have 5 percent renewable and 15 percent fossil fuel companies in its portfolio. The long-term value potential of renewables is then outweighed by the fossil stocks. The recipe here is to build the new sustainable portfolio while reducing the old unsustainable portfolio. Leading banks have already announced that they will stop financing coal.
The bank’s chief financial officer (CFO) can use this transition analysis to examine which activities are contributing to the bank’s earnings and which assets are eroding. Accordingly, the bank can exchange ideas with its customers on transition management and strategy. The bank can terminate relationships with customers who are making insufficient progress.
Impact reporting
Just like companies, banks have stakeholders who want to know how their banks are doing. A consortium consisting of Harvard Business School and the Impact Institute has proposed New impact reporting system to measure the environmental and social impact of all banking activities. 3 Four international banks, ABN AMRO, Danske Bank, DBS Bank and UBS, are leading this Banking for Impact initiative. These banks believe they can accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy by adopting new impact reporting standards that take social and environmental factors into account. They can provide a well-rounded picture of how they create value over the long term.
Not only bank customers and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) are interested in the effects of banks, but also banking supervisors. Supervisors can use the transition analysis and the associated impact reporting to assess how future-proof a bank’s business model is. In the current low interest rate environment with eroding interest margins, the supervisors want to find out how future-proof a bank’s loan portfolio is. The European Central Bank (ECB) and the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) are already preparing climate stress tests for their banking system, while the US Federal Reserve is still thinking about its strategy. With increasing global warming, loss of biodiversity and social inequalities (both within and between countries), there is also increasing awareness of sustainability efforts. Banks would have to prepare better for a sustainable future.

Biden Signs Executive Order Targeting 50% EVs by 2030
President Joe Biden signed an executive order Thursday afternoon aimed at beginning the phaseout of cars and trucks running on gas and diesel, with battery-electric vehicles now expected to make up at least 50% of new model sales by 2030.
Bernie Ricke, president of UAW Local 600, which builds the Ford F-150 Lightning introduced President Biden at the announcement.
[data-block_610c5198530b5] { }
The president also confirmed that the administration is reversing a “shortsighted” move by his predecessor that saw a sharp rollback in federal fuel economy standards. Both moves won widespread praise — and promises from key automakers they will live up to the targets the Biden White House has set. But some environmentalists questioned whether the administration is moving far and fast enough.
The future, said Biden, speaking from the White House lawn, “is electric, and there’s no turning back. The question is whether we’ll lead,” he said, warning that, “Right now, China is leading the race.”
Currently, that Asian powerhouse has 93 plants building the sort of batteries needed to power battery-based vehicles, compared to just four in the United States, according to a study by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. In recent months, a number of automakers, including General Motors, Ford and Stellantis — as well as independent suppliers — have announced plans to build lithium-ion battery plants in the U.S., but the numbers so far announced still leave this country way behind in terms of production capacity.
Biden said today the future is electric and "there's no turning back."
[data-block_610c52d4530b6] { }
U.S. playing catch up
The U.S. has also lagged both China and Europe in terms of production of plug-based models, in part due to the tougher mandates already announced in those parts of the world. The European Union, in particular, recently laid out a proposal that would phase out sale of new vehicles using internal combustion engines entirely by 2035.
The White House has faced heavy pressure since Biden was inaugurated in January to follow suit. And even with a 50% target for 2030, the president came under criticism from some environmentalists.
“Today’s proposal relies on unenforceable voluntary commitments from unreliable car makers,” wrote Dan Becker, director of the, Safe Climate Transport Campaign of the Center for Biological Diversity, in astatement. Describing the Biden plan as “loophole-ridden,” Becker said “strong rules” are the only way to get automakers to cut emissions.
But Thursday’s executive order received far more positive reviews from most of the auto industry, starting with the Detroit Big Three, whose senior executives were on hand for the signing.
Biden praised GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra for her "leadership" on the push to go electric.
[data-block_610c53ba530b7] { }
“Today, Ford, GM and Stellantis announce their shared aspiration to achieve sales of 40-50% of annual U.S. volumes of electric vehicles (battery electric, fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles) by 2030 in order to move the nation closer to a zero-emissions future consistent with Paris climate goals,” the three automakers said in a statement released ahead of the White House event.
Manufacturers offer mixed reviews
Though not invited for the signing, a number of foreign manufacturers also weighed in.
“Today, Nissan North America Inc. has a target that more than 40% of its U.S. vehicle sales by 2030 will be fully electric, with even more to be electrified,” the second-largest Japanese automaker said. Its rival Honda said it “supports” the president’s goals, including the toughened fuel economy standards that will phase in during the coming years.
Several manufacturers sniped at Biden, however. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, the best-selling EV manufacturer in the U.S., was notably absent from the Thursday ceremony. “Seems odd that Tesla wasn’t invited.”
Elon Musk reportedly wasn't invited to the event because the company doesn't have a union.
[data-block_610c5598530b8] { }
Meanwhile, Rivian, another U.S.-based EV startup, questioned whether the administration was going far enough. “This draft proposal would drive us in the right direction after several years in reverse,” said Chris Nevers, Rivian’s senior director of environmental policy, “but slowly getting back on track is not enough.”
Previous administrations’ plans
As Vice President, Biden helped in the push for a sharp increase in mileage standards during the Obama administration. Fuel economy was expected to grow by about 5% annually, reaching more than 50 miles per gallon. Since fuel consumption is directly linked to the production of carbon emissions, that would have led to a sharp reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
When he was in office, President Donald Trump sharply criticized the Obama-era Corporate Average Fuel Economy. The cuts his administration announced in early 2020 actually went beyond what most automakers sought, in fact, with a target of 1.5% in mileage increases annually.
Ford CEO Jim Farley was on hand — and recognized — for the signing of the executive order by President Biden today.
[data-block_610c55f9530b9] { }
In recent weeks, there had been news reports, based on supposed “leaks,” indicating Biden would approve a compromise 3.7% annual increase in fuel economy. The final revision of CAFE will see a 25% improvement over the four years ending in 2026.
The industry, at least for now, appears to be fully backing Biden — though, after supporting the Obama fuel economy mandate, automakers including General Motors and Toyota later called for a partial rollback.
What will happen now depends on a variety of factors, especially in terms of the aggressive EV mandates the president has targeted.
EV target is extremely aggressive
Right now, pure battery-electric vehicles account for only about 2.2% of new vehicle sales in the U.S., according to industry data. Adding in hybrids and plug-in hybrids brings that up to around 6 percent. But the trendline is moving upward at an aggressive pace. During the first six months of this year, sales of PHEVs and pure BEVs doubled compared to the year before.
EV sales have doubled in the last year, spurred by new entries into the market like the VW ID.4.
[data-block_610c5697530ba] { }
There had been a growing consensus in industry circles demand for plug-based models would reach around 30% by decade’s end. Going to 50% will be difficult, numerous analysts said this week. And Biden acknowledged the challenge during his brief address on Thursday.
He pointed to his Build Back Better infrastructure bill working through Congress as critical to that goal, as well as legislation that would both extend and expand the current federal EV incentives of up to $7,500. A bill cosponsored by Michigan Representative Debbie Dingell would bring the number up to $10,000 for American-made EVs, adding yet another $2,500 for those produced with union labor.
Biden also highlighted other goals of the administration, including the creation of 500,000 EV chargers nationwide — something researchers at J.D. Power, IHS Markit and others have called essential to widespread acceptance of battery power. Additional money will be made available for battery and EV manufacturers, as well as researchers working on the next-generation batteries intended to boost range, cut charging times and lower costs.
The industry, meanwhile, is taking another critical step. Where only a handful of long-range EVs were available at the start of the decade, as many as 100 or more are expected to be available in U.S. showrooms by mid-decade.

(..)“But the growing EV market masks many regulatory flaws and failures to cut emissions, such as the growing CO2 emissions from new cars prior to 2020 and the push by some carmakers towards suboptimal plug-in hybrid technology. The biggest risk is that the EV momentum could stagnate between 2022–2029 unless the current post-2020 standards are strengthened. The 2021 review is therefore necessary and timely.
P.S. The EV momentum depends from sticker prices of EVs in Europe! If Tesla and Chinese EV and battery manufacturers will keep their promise to cut battery and EV prices then regulation fluctuations and political corruption instigated by “big oil” and “legacy automakers” will lose influence over EV market....
But, if Tesla and Chinese EV manufacturers will fail to deliver affordable compact electric hatchback and crossover by 2025....then EV adoption will be painfully slow, especially in Eastern Europe and Baltics. Current generation of “long range” EVs are way too expensive, but performance of “affordable” EVs so mediocre...These “affordable” EVs are quite expensive and way too small, too slow, too flimsy. Their real world range is too short without proper charging infrastructure.
Repairs of out of warranty long range EVs are extremely expensive. Imagine “affordable” second hand Tesla Model S with failed MCU (repair costs a fortune)...and compare it with an old Audi A6 diesel, very popular car in Latvia... It is almost impossible to convince people to ditch and replace their old diesel Audi, VW, BMW, Volvo, Škoda, Opel and etc.

Germany's VW announces job cuts as part of 'green' shakeup | DW | 14.03.2021
The German automaker Volkswagen announced on Sunday that it will cut thousands of jobs to free up funds for investment in electric vehicles and other new technologies.
The Wolfsburg-based VW plans to focus on e-mobility, hybrid cars, a seamless software-based vehicle operating system and self-driving technologies.
The job cuts are part of VW’s strategy to regain its crown as the world’s largest carmaker as it enters a new green era. VW and its subsidiaries sold 9.3 million cars in 2020.
Toyota pipped to the top spot last year, selling 9.5 million units.
What has been agreed?
An agreement struck with labor unions will see savings through early retirement or semiretirement. A previous deal rules out any forced layoffs until the end of this decade.
Unions have already agreed a pact to prevent forced layoffs until the end of this decade
The German financial newspaper Handlesblatt reported on Sunday that the plans will cost some €500 million ($597 million) and 5,000 people could leave the company.
Volkswagen declined to give an overall figure, saying only it expected up to 900 workers to opt for early retirement and that thousands could take semiretirement.
The firm also extended a hiring freeze until the end of 2021. It had previously only been in place until the first quarter.
External hires can only be made in areas like electric cars, digitalization and battery cell development, the company said in a statement.
VW says COVID-19 woes ‘successfully contained’
Volkswagen’s personnel chief, Gunnar Kilian, said the firm’s “continued strict cost management” would allow executives to “finance the necessary investments in the future.”
The firm, which also includes the Porsche, Audi and Seat subsidiaries, has earmarked nearly half of its €150 billion of its research and development budget for the plan.
Executives told investors last month that they believed that the effects of the coronavirus pandemic has been “‘successfully contained.”
They also pointed to the “rapid recovery” of Volkswagen’s highly-profitable Chinese operations that had helped the corporation weather the recent economic turmoil.
Why are carmakers trying to go green?
A global clampdown on polluting technologies helped to trigger the company’s renewed commitment to going green.
That was brought about, in part, by the diesel pollution scandal in 2015 that revealed the automaker had fitted some vehicles with cheat devices to pass emissions tests.
EU regulators have set stringent emissions targets that will force Volkswagen to boost the proportion of hybrid and electric vehicles of its European car sales to 60% by 2030. That is up from a previous target of 40%.
It means car companies are bringing in low-emission technology, even for smaller mainstream models where profit margins are usually much lower.
Volkswagen said in October it was reviewing its ownership of its Italian sports car brand, Lamborghini, as part of the shake-up.

Aaron's SEMA Winning '78 Rabbit
Aaron's SEMA Winning '78 Rabbit Best European Import: 1978 Volkswagen Rabbit From afar, Aaron Stehly's Rabbit looks somewhat subdued. Get closer and it's obvious that's not the right word to describe this VW. What we love about this car is how Stehly applied a classic hot-rod approach to his front-drive, four-cylinder VW hatchback The Oettinger OKRASA 16-valve heads are the German equivalent of an ARDUN conversion on a Ford flathead. The engine bay and underside of the hood feature a ridiculous amount of metalwork. There are unnecessarily complicated details, like how the factory square door corners have been rounded and the body opening filled in to match, as well as how Stehly pulled out the wheel arches without messing with the rest of the fenders. It's an import built through the lens of traditional American speed, an idea we can all get behind. ✅ Subscribe to Our Channel for More Cars, Tips & Resources: https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoGuysandaRide/ ✅ Stay Connected 👉 Twitter: https://twitter.com/GuysRide 👉 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twoguysandaride/ 👉 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@twoguysandaride ============================= ✅ SEE all of our HOW TO videos here: CarTechHowTo.com - http://bit.ly/2ZvDrbE ✅ Our Playlists: https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoGuysandaRide/playlists ✅ Other Videos You Might Be Interested In Watching: 🚘 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series III - CarTech Infotainment and Passengers Screens How To https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO5Q1upM2CY 🚘 2019 Ford Escape Titanium- CarTech Infotainment How To https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIE9n3Q0Q2M 🚘 Excel Power Bikes - Electric Bicycles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F53cHrmG0vo 🚘 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid - CarTech Infotainment How To https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGXVyzB0B3E ============================= ✅ About Two Guys and a Ride: Two Guys and a Ride’s channel is dedicated to all things automotive. Volkswagen ID.3 2020 review – a thoroughly good car that happens to be electric
Finally there’s a mainstream EV that takes advantage of its elements to be a thoroughly well engineered modern everyday vehicle The ID.3 is an important car for VW. It’s the first model from a ground-up exercise in the creation of not just one battery electric model, but a whole range of different electric cars across the Volkswagen Group on its highly anticipated MEB architecture. THE MOST EXCITING CARS OF 2020, AS REVIEWED BY DRIVING.CO.ULAST YEAR was one marked by boredom. Large swathes of it were spent indoors thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, forcing us to take up hobbies like doing jigsaw puzzles, reading books or baking banana bread.
That applied to car reviewers, too: press deliveries were (understandably) halted, launches were pushed back to next year and reveals were taken online.
However, there were periods before and between the various lockdowns during which reviewing resumed, and for short, sweet periods we remembered the thrill of driving new cars. Here are eight of the most exciting models Driving.co.uk tested in 2020.
1. New Land Rover Defender
Land Rover Defender
The Land Rover Defender, needless to say, is one of the most recognisable automotive icons of all time. The old silhouette, famously first conceived as a sketch in the sand, remained relatively unchanged for the better part of a century, meaning that the new one, which doesn’t share a single component with its rugged predecessor, was seen as progress by some and sacrilege by others. Either way, it arrived to nearly impossibly high expectations.
However, the new model, kitted out with modern accoutrements like independent air suspension and 3D cameras, is “leagues better in every way” than its predecessor, reckoned Driving.co.uk editor Will Dron. High praise indeed.
Read our review of the Land Rover Defender here.
2. Volkswagen ID.3
Volkswagen ID.3
Volkswagen can split its eighty-something-year history into three distinct sections, each represented by one of its machines. First was the, erm, problematic conception of the brand with the VW Beetle, a “people’s car” designed by Ferdinand Porsche on the instructions of Adolf Hitler. Second was a period marked by the Golf, the quintessential hatchback and the yardstick against which all family cars are judged.
The third, says VW, began in 2020 with the launch of the ID.3, its electric hatchback. And this car isn’t just a big moment in VW’s canon — it’s one of the biggest PR projects the company has ever undertaken, launching a range of vehicles that aims to mend the still lingering spectre that is the dieselgate scandal. That makes it incredibly important, but is it a good car? Yes, we reckon it is.
Read our review of the Volkswagen ID.3 here.
3. McLaren 765LT
McLaren 765LT
The 765LT sits atop McLaren’s “Super Series”, a role previously held by the 720S — a car described by absolutely zero people as “lacklustre”. However the famously forensic McLaren decided that there were a few milligrams here and there that could be trimmed from the 720S and a few more horsepower to be squeezed out of its 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8. The result is a car that weighs 80kg less and packs 45 more horsepower (Super Series cars are named for their number of horses), with engineering and aero changes to make it even faster round a track.
The result is a car that, in Will Dron’s opinion, “has amphetamines licked”. “Probably”.
Read our review of the McLaren 765LT here.
4. Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet
Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet
Speaking of fast cars, say hello to the newest version of the Porsche 911 Turbo S. It can reach 60mph in exactly the same time as the aforementioned McLaren 765LT, thanks to its twin-turbo, six-cylinder flat six, its hammer-like torque delivery and the grip offered by its non-optional four wheel drive. It can, if you’re in good and legal conditions, top out at 205mph, and is capable of behaving “like a toddler full of sugar”.
But what impressed Alex Goy the most was the fact that it is capable of all that while offering daily-driver levels of practicality. There’s a good amount of space under the bonnet and if you’re gentle with the accelerator, it can be perfectly polite around town. A true everyday supercar.
Read our review of the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet here.
5. Honda Civic Type R
Honda Civic Type R
When it came to the midlife update of the Civic Type R, Honda’s engineers had the luxury of not having to make too many big overhauls. After the blip that was the FK2 model (the one that came out in 2015), the current model — the FK8, to those in the know — has been seen as Honda’s return to the top of the hot hatch segment. However, the brand has decided to go one step further. Because, why not?
That means that the things that made the Civic Type R great before — the 2.0-litre turbo engine, the precision of the steering, the general sense of fun — are still great, if not incrementally more so, says Kieran Ahuja, while its shortcomings have been addressed. Add in a new — and completely addictive — short throw gear change, and we’re onto a winner.
Read our review of the Honda Civic Type R here.
6. Polestar 2
Polestar 2
Building a car that takes on the Tesla Model 3 is no easy feat. The American brand is, after all, at the forefront of electric vehicle making and the most valuable car company in the world — with the most loyal following. Its entry-level model was even briefly the best-selling car in the UK.
However, take on Tesla is what Polestar set out to do with the Polestar 2. According to Will Dron, it has largely achieved that, thanks to its Greta Thunberg-friendly interior, “immense” infotainment system and the depth of its driving character.
Read our review of the Polestar 2 here.
7. Volvo XC40 Recharge P8
Volvo XC40 Recharge P8
“Fast” might not be the first adjective you reach for when you look at the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8. It looks like a safe, practical, comfortable and sensible family crossover. And Volvo’s first pure-electric production vehicle is all of those things: it’s got a sizeable 452 litres of boot capacity; it can travel 280 miles on a single charge; it recharges rapidly; it’s got world-beating crash safety and driver assists; and it has the same great infotainment system as the aforementioned Polestar 2, with a similarly serene, minimalistic interior.
However, it’s also fast. Very fast. Thanks to four-wheel drive from two powerful electric motors delivering 487 lb ft of torque, it can go from 0-60mph in under five seconds. It’s a car that has the capability to stick your head to the headrest, says Will Dron, but it doesn’t beg you to.
Read our review of the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 here.
8. Rolls-Royce Ghost
Rolls Royce Ghost
The Rolls-Royce Ghost has adopted a new ethos in its latest iteration, one that its creator has labelled “post-opulent”. The car maker’s well-to-do clientele are reportedly no longer interested in the glitz and glamour that it previously embodied, and are now after a more sophisticated, minimalistic way of showing off their incredible wealth.
This posed something of a quandary to the designers and engineers over in Goodwood — their task was to make a car that was not as immediately dazzling as its predecessor but still justifies a price tag of at least £208,000; to make the Ghost as exciting as the outgoing model without making it gaudy. Engineers also had to improve on a car that has been praised as the best to drive among Rolls’ entire line-up. Will Dron was among the first in the world to find out how successful they were
