Volkswagen's Jetta Is A Conservative Vehicle In Comparison To Its Rivals.
You would assume that the VW Jetta is a basic model because of its low beginning price (about $20,000) and my SE trim's price tag of around $22,800. It is not. There is a power sunroof, and push-button start on the inside. The persuasion. You can get away with shorts in the summer on leatherette-looking heated seats, but be careful if you do. Leather is used on the steering wheel, shift knob, and hand brake, but there are more hard plastics than on some higher-end versions. The back seat of the Jetta can accommodate two adults, making it the most spacious vehicle in its class. Ample head and legroom are provided in the room.

The Jetta is a well-executed vehicle that is both stylish and conservative. Even though it's not exciting, our styling score of 4 indicates an interior that lacks life.
The Jetta's appearance was revamped a few years ago, and the general themes haven't changed much. Classic sedan shape with sharper lines on the hood and around the body sides to make it look like it's interesting. R-Line models pique our interest, although the overall design is somewhat simple.
Jetta’s with standard 16-inch wheels have trouble fitting into the prominent wheel arches, while those with optional 17or 18-inch wheels have a harsher ride and less manoeuvrability. The Jetta's touchscreen is angled toward the driver in the cabin.

Test Drive: One Week With the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line Shows the Car’s Strengths
If anyone still wants a sedan, this VW is one to get.
LOS ANGELES—When people ask me what my job is, I'm never quite sure what to tell them. I rarely use my official title, senior editor, because it's a bad habit in my industry that most writers are called editors. A lot of my colleagues use "automotive journalist," but I've never quite embraced it; when I think journalist, I think Woodward and Bernstein. "Car critic" is probably closest to the mark—like a movie critic or a food critic. The problem is that it sometimes rings hollow, specifically when there is a car about which I can offer no criticism. Such is the case with the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line I've just tested.
2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line: More Of The Same I'm sure I don't need to tell you the Passat has been a Volkswagen staple for decades. Back in 2012, VW split-off the North American Passat from the rest of the world, creating a bigger sedan that it built in its new factory in Tennessee. For 2020, the Passat got a "major-minor" update—basically new sheet metal (except the roof) and more equipment on the same old bones.
This drew criticism, because the new MQB platform, which underpins pretty much everything VW does, including the Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport, is a better-driving chassis. But that doesn't mean the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line's old platform is bad. Indeed, during my test of it, the 2020 Passat turned out to be nearly everything I expect from a German sedan: direct, engaging, and comfortable. The latter is particularly noteworthy, precisely because my tester was a top-of-the-range R-Line model with big 19-inch wheels which could have, but did not, degrade the ride quality.
Reining-In The 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line But I did say, "nearly everything I expect"? Because I managed to find one minor flaw: a bit of float over bumps at higher speeds. And higher speeds really were a bit of a problem for me. The 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line is powered by our old familiar friend, VW's 2.0-liter, turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine. (It's worth noting VW was an early adopter of the 2.0T format, and now that format is nearly universal.)
This faithful servant still delivers 174 hp, same as last year, but for 2020 VW bumped its torque, by 20 lb-ft, to 206. With its standard-fit six-speed automatic transmission, the 2020 Passat R-Line will get to 60 mph in a respectable 7.8 seconds, but it's the wall of torque (and, well, okay, perhaps a COVID-related lack of traffic) that got me in trouble—seems the Passat likes to sneak up past 80 mph, and that's where I started to feel the extra softness in the suspension. Not that I should be one to criticize—I too am showing softness with advanced age.
But the engine does return good fuel economy, and the big 18.5-gallon fuel tank, a relic from the days when the Passat was offered with a lusty-but-thirsty 280-hp V-6, gives it a nice long cruising range.
Inside, this 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line test-car is like a VW Greatest Hits album: Clear analog gauges (no video-screen dash option like on other VWs), three-dial climate controls, and a small but straightforward touchscreen stereo. Volkswagen installed a bunch of new safety tech for 2020, by the way; all Passats get collision warning with automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring, while the SE model and above get adaptive cruise, lane centering, and automatic high-beams
And let's not forget that old Passat staple, the limousine-sized back seat, which is one of the basic reasons why the North American Passat differs from the MQB-based car sold in other markets. God bless the cheeseburger!
The bottom line is, I've tested-driven and critiqued cars for a lot of years now, and when it comes to the basics of getting a family of four or five where they need to go, there aren't many cars that do it better than the Passat.
2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line: Where It Could Be Better Now, a lot of my fellow critics have found something to criticize—specifically the fact Volkswagen didn't move the Passat to that new MQB platform. No question there would have been advantages. I'm sure my one itty-bitty complaint about the ride could be ironed out, and the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line could probably get the fancy digital dashboard found in other VW models.
But I can also understand the reasons for sticking with the old platform, and they all come down to dollars and sense. Volkswagen has trumpeted its commitment to sedans in our market, but sedans are a dying breed, and we can understand the argument that it just doesn't make sense to sink too much money into the Passat.
And while the Passat isn't exactly a bargain—at least not at the higher trim levels—with a starting price below $24,000 and an all-in price of just more than $32,000, we can hardly accuse Volkswagen of price gouging. (Incidentally, in order to keep costs down, VW has gone the way of Honda: Most options have been eliminated, with the trim level--S, SE, R-Line, SEL--determining the Passat's equipment level.)
Well, it's true the 2020 Volkswagen Passat R-Line might be a better car if it was on the MQB platform. Maybe it would be even more engaging to drive, or have a little more backseat room, or more up-to-date tech. Maybe it'd make a stronger stand against newer competitors like Toyota's Camry, Nissan's Altima, or Honda's crowd-pleasing Accord.
But the 2020 Volkswagen Passat driven for this test is solid—and this car critic simply can't find anything worthwhile to criticize.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta Brings Updates to GLI and More
The Volkswagen Jetta was redesigned for the 2019 model year, and carried over mostly unchanged for 2020. The same is largely true for the 2021 model year of this midsize sedan, although a notable update is a new infotainment system in higher trim levels.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta: What’s New?
What remains the same is the Jetta’s handsome, if not eye-catching, design. The sharp crease just below the belt line adds some character to the flanks, but the ho-hum front end seems designed more to avoid giving offense than it is to inspire. What’s more interesting about the Jetta is that it rides on the well-loved MQB platform—shared with everything from VW’s Golf, GTI, and Atlas to Audi’s A3 and Q3— and also provides owners with more room inside than the last-generation model.
And there’s still no word about the rumored Jetta R, although you can be sure we’ll be the first to tell you about it should it happen.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Trim Levels and Equipment
The regular 2021 Jetta comes in five trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. The Jetta GLI, the sportiest version, comes in two trims: S and Autobahn.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Infotainment and Technology
Arguably the biggest change for 2021 is the inclusion of the new MIB3 infotainment system on the top two trim levels: SEL and SEL Premium. The other trim levels make do with the carryover MIB II system, a touchscreen setup. Previously, for 2020, the Jetta featured a 6.5-inch screen in S, SE, and R-Line models, while the SEL and SEL Premium use an 8.0-inch screen. The SEL Premium also offers the Discover Media functionality with 2.5D navigation.
For the Jetta GLI, only the Autobahn gets the upgraded MIB3 infotainment system.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Interior Features
For 2021, there is little to note beyond what we’ve already said about the 2019 and 2020 models. The interior remains the same, which is mostly a good thing, considering the available Volkswagen version of Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit system, smartphone integration options, and subdued yet sporty design. The SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trims offer standard contrasting stitching on the wheel and shifter, and the SE and SEL trims also get six-way power adjustment on the driver’s seats.
2021 Volkswagen Engine, Transmission, and Chassis
Nothing new to report here. The sole engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, and we presume it will still offer a manual transmission on the base trim only. All other trims will get an eight-speed automatic. The engine makes 148 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is adequate but nothing to get the heart racing.
Unless you’re talking about the Jetta GLI. As before, it features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four pumping out 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, available with a manual, and offering a lot more performance—if not the passion that previous GLIs instilled. We expect the 2021 GLI experience to be identical to 2020 save the infotainment and safety updates.
2021 Volkswagen Jetta Safety
The GLI Autobahn gets a host of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam control. This is in addition to the standard post-collision braking system, which debuted for 2020. There are no other apparent changes for safety systems in any other Jetta version or trim.

2020 Hyundai Elantra
Rental cars are so great- it’s like getting to sidestep your daily driver for a car mistress, or car gigolo. Not that I have any desire to do such a thing, as I’m in a perfectly healthy relationship with an older Volkswagen. But she needed a few days off, and with this virus business I didn’t wanna Uber, so a rental it would have to be. Wanting to save money to put towards the Jetta’s possible costly maintenance, I first checked Turo, which was crazy cheap, but all they had available were a bunch of 2012 Fiat 500s. Fun fact- when my Honda got stolen in 2012 I tried to rent a car from a company through my insurance- all they had available was a then brand new Fiat 500, but they couldn’t let me rent it they said, because it kept breaking down on them. Back in 2012. So no thanks on the same car eight year later. I moved on to Enterprise, and I decided to go with the lowest-priced deal possible, which promised a Mitsubishi Mirage or similar. I’m furloughed at the moment, so this thing would just have to get me home from and then back to my mechanic’s. I could deal with an economy car just for that.
The plan was to meet the rental agent at the repair shop where I was leaving my car, sign some stuff, and then take off in the Mirage or similar. Wanting to socially isolate as much as possible, I decided to wait in my car until the rental agent and the employee who was driving them back to their office both showed up. First, I saw a brand new Hyundai Elantra with out of state plates and a barcode on the windshield pull into a spot. I figured that was the shuttle back, so I got out of my car, figuring my rental was right behind the Hyundai. And sure enough, moments later a Chevy Sonic pulled up. A Sonic is similar to a Mirage, right? I immediately noticed that the Sonic was absolutely filthy and kinda dented up, which, whatever, I’m renting from the bottom shelf, but also that the driver was an elderly man with no face mask. Huh. Well, okay. “Is that mine?” I cheerfully asked the man, who looked back at me completely bewildered. “No” he said gruffly, and then started taking some boxes out of his back seat. Oh man, should I have upgraded to Compact or Standard? Could Economy really be this bad? But just then- “Excuse me, sir?”, I heard from the direction of the Hyundai, “I’m with Enterprise! We have your car right over here!” It turns out they upgraded me two full vehicle classes- score! So the Elantra was mine, the rental agent’s shuttle was a Chrysler Pacifica that rolled up a few minutes later, and that dirty Sonic was a parts delivery guy. Oops.
Even though I have a perfectly valid credit card and a perfectly legitimate checking account, when I signed the Enterprise agent’s iPad iFelt like Preston in Blank Check pulling off one of his many bullshit “Mr. Macintosh” transactions. Like, handing over a piece of plastic and scribbling incoherently with my finger on a tablet screen = unlimited access to a brand new motor vehicle? Whaaaat? But it seriously was that easy! Plus, COVID-19 precautions meant my agent just straight up left the keys in the ignition with the car running- one less point of contagion. He was super nice though, and wiped down everything before leaving the car to me. Of course, I pretended that we were both criminals and he was cleaning his fingerprints off a getaway car before handing it over to me for disposal. I also kept thinking about the rental car scene in the awesome buddy-comedy My Fellow Americans in which a little Hyundai is used as a punchline-

Insane that twenty-four years later, the two brands really aren’t a whole lot different anymore. Side by side, my brand new Elantra and a Lexus IS don’t even look particularly dissimilar from one another, save for the latter one’s more pronounced gaping O face. Even with a more staid design, the Hyundai certainly doesn’t at all appear notably goofier or cheaper in comparison.
Once inside, the Elantra seemed like a nice enough place. I went to grab a CD out of the Jetta (Yes, like a grandpa I still listen to compact discs in the car, don’t judge) and then realized upon closer inspection that the Elantra didn’t even have a CD slot. Since I couldn’t understand the deal with the satellite radio- it seemed to me like the previous renter had only activated five stations, and they were all Catholic talk radio stations- I just defaulted to my favorite local FM channel. Whenever I’ve been given a rental car in the past, I compulsively have to see how loud the volume on the stereo will go before it starts hurting my ears. And I’m happy to report that the Elantra was capable of boosting “High” by The Cure to an acceptably window-shaking volume. With that important business out of the way, I could see what else was up with this car. It had a sportshift kinda gear box, I guess Hyundai’s is called SHIFTRONIC®.
I messed around with it, it seemed responsive. Downshifts really did slow the car considerably, and upshifts seemed to make it go faster, but I don’t know, my foot was also on the gas, so maybe it was just a placebo effect? Either way, I’m a big fan of manumatics- it’s always good to look down and see the little S and the plus/minus. It’s a welcome bonus touch, like when a deli sandwich comes with a pickle. Even if you’re never going to want or use that pickle, it’s just nice someone made the effort.
Next, I needed to push this “Drive Mode” button and see what that did. Sadly, hitting it did not cause toothpicks to dispense from the sun visor and “Nightcall” by Kavinsky to boom over the sound system, lame. But, instead, it pulled up this dope TRON-esque graphic of the Elantra on the touch screen-
I just love it when digital renderings of cars appear on their dash screens. Second only to visual equalizers, they’re my favorite completely unnecessary yet supremely cool thing that a display can offer me. The fun cartoon in the Elantra explained that I had the choice of three modes- Smart, Normal and Sport. The Catholic talk radio renter had been driving it in Normal, no surprise there. I was on the highway at this point, so I decided to get crazy and punch it into Sport. And believe it or not, it made a huge difference! I once drove a Mini Cooper S with a manual, and while Elantra Sport Mode certainly wasn’t that vivacious, it was much, much more fun than Elantra Normal or Elantra Smart. Okay, full disclosure- I didn’t even bother to check out Elantra Smart- I spent too many years driving a Prius to care to see what the “nerd setting” felt like- I can imagine vividly, thanks.
It wasn’t until I arrived home that I even bothered to see what the key situation was. Like I said, they were theoretically in it, as the engine was on, but not until pulling up near my house did I think to make sure that they were actually in the car. They were though, dangling from an ignition cylinder the way car keys are supposed to. I myself hate proximity fobs, push starts and such- they make me feel too disconnected. I have too many years of the muscle memory of my fingers gripping a physical car key, turning it, and feeling the vibration of the engine starting to ever get used to anything else. To me, that sensation also turns a key in my brain, and once that’s turned, it is like “Okay, we’re operating a car now, pay attention”. Without that ritual, I can’t focus on my driving quite the same way. I would imagine it would be similarly disorienting if suddenly all cigarettes just came magically lit right out of the pack, long time smokers would say “What the hell? I enjoy the act of flicking my Zippo, that’s part of the whole thing!” You know? Lucky for me, the Hyundai had keys-keys, albeit surprisingly budget looking ones-
My friend’s mom had a 2004 Elantra that he’d borrow and I’m fairly certain the keys for that thing looked almost identical. A quick Google search proved me right.
C’mon Hyundai! This thing was a two-thousand and twenty! And it wasn’t even the base model. Not even a switchblade? Or a buttons-built-into-the-top-of-the-key type deal? Nope. Key and separate fob, 1995 style. Oh well. Since I’m on furlough at the moment, I didn’t really have anywhere I needed to go, so I just left the Hyundai to sit until the Jetta was ready. When I got word that the VW was all put back together, I headed back into the countryside in the Elantra.
Enhance! It’s hard to tell, but that’s a genuine Passat W8 all-wheel-drive wagon in front of me.
When I got closer, I noticed that it was full of yard work equipment, and getting pretty beat looking. Sitting behind it at a red light, I noticed the two young guys in it were rocking out to music. It was warm out that day, so since we both had our windows down I could immediately recognize Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” slapping through the Passat’s Monsoon speakers. The two guys nodded along with it enthusiastically for a few moments before starting to laugh and changing tracks on either a mix CD or a Spotify playlist or whatever. Ohhhh, they were rocking out to it ironically. The plot thickened. If it was a mix CD, were they driving a borrowed car and laughing at someone’s taste, as my friends and I did when we commandeered a dad’s Lincoln LS and found “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins deep within the trunk mounted CD changer? Or were they a couple of Gen Zs cycling archaeologically through a Woodstock ‘99 playlist on a streaming device of some sort? I’ll never know. Anyway, bawitda-back to my story about the Elantra. I had to put a bank-busting $3.12 worth of gas into it so that it would have a full tank before dumping the keys into my mechanic’s after hours slot and happily reclaiming the Jetta. Not that there was anything wrong with the Elantra- as has been stated endlessly elsewhere, it’s truly amazing how far Hyundai has come over the last twenty or so years. I guess the rental company wasn’t as enthusiastic about the little car’s innovations or maybe they were just used to them, as I got a call from my mechanic a few days later telling me it still hadn’t been picked up. I called the rental people who assured me they would be coming to grab it, they had just been busy. Since my mechanic has plenty of land, and since my credit card had stopped being charged, I left the situation at that. I’ve heard nothing further, so for all I know the car either got collected or it’s still just sitting out there in the fields, now in use as the nicest chicken coop in all of the Amish Country. If that’s the case, those chickens are in for a real treat! Hopefully they’ll have more luck figuring out the satellite radio than I did.

Comparativo: VW Virtus GTS tem preço de Jetta, mas é tão bom quanto?
Esportividade do Virtus GTS ou conforto do Jetta Comfortline?Fernando Pires/Quatro Rodas
Sedãs costumam não ser tão atraentes quanto carros esportivos como cupês, hatches ou mesmo peruas. Tanto que a existência do VW Virtus GTS foi muito contestada internamente, na fábrica.
Basicamente, o três-volumes esportivo só saiu do papel graças a José Carlos Pavone, chefe de design da marca no país e “pai” do projeto.
Controverso ou não, o fato é que ele nasceu: com a mesma frente, as mesmas rodas e a mesma estilização de cabine do irmão Polo GTS, mais uma traseira discretamente incrementada com lanternas escurecidas, defletor do para-choque e régua na tampa do porta-malas em preto-brilhante.
E com o status de primeiro sedã da Volkswagen a receber a sigla esportiva intermediária entre o GT e o GTi.

Só que a brincadeira terá um preço: R$ 104.940 mais R$ 1.570 por pintura metálica (como o Cinza Platinum da unidade que ilustra esta reportagem) e R$ 2.160 pelo pacote opcional que inclui sistema de som Beats (quatro alto-falantes, dois tweeters, amplificador e subwoofer). Total: R$ 108.670.
A etiqueta assustou potenciais compradores e logo levantou a lebre: por esse valor, não é mais negócio levar para casa um Jetta?

Afinal, o sedã médio da marca parte de R$ 99.990 e vem equipado com o mesmo conjunto motriz: motor 1.4 turbo flex de 150 cv e 25,5 mkgf aliado a câmbio automático de seis marchas. É por isso que criamos este comparativo.
Entretanto, a versão escolhida do Jetta foi a intermediária Comfortline 250 TSI, mais parelha ao Virtus GTS no pacote de equipamentos.
Quando reunimos os dois modelos, tal configuração custava apenas R$ 5.000 a mais do que seu primo menor. Alguns dias depois, porém, a Volkswagen reajustou seu valor para R$ 114.990, chegando a R$ 121.690 com teto solar (opcional) e cor metálica.
Apesar da nova diferença de até R$ 13.000, será que ainda vale a pena cogitar um Jetta? É o que veremos.

Comportamento dinâmico
As propostas, obviamente, são diferentes.
Apesar de surpreendentemente macio para um esportivo, o GTS possui calibração mais esportiva de suspensão em relação aos demais Virtus – carga de molas e amortecedores revista, barra estabilizadora de maior diâmetro e eixo traseiro mais rígido.

Suas respostas de acelerador e direção também são diferentes e, em modo Sport, a assistência elétrica da direção interfere de maneira muito sutil, tornando-a deveras dura para os padrões regulares.
Na estrada, esse acerto torna o sedã compacto muito divertido e instigante. Quando o uso é urbano, porém, a calibração esportiva cobra seu preço, deixando o Virtus menos confortável.
É aqui que o Jetta demonstra seu valor: com direção mais leve, suspensões mais macias e pneus com perfil ligeiramente mais alto, o modelo médio proporciona uma experiência muito mais confortável e suave de rodagem na cidade.

Ao mesmo tempo, os dados de desempenho são praticamente iguais: na pista de testes, ele levou alguns poucos décimos de segundo a mais para cumprir as provas de aceleração e retomada.
Na aferição de 0 a 100 km/h, por exemplo, a diferença foi só de 0,2 s. Aliado a isso, o consumo é surpreendentemente melhor em ciclo urbano.
Mais um sinal de que, para quem sai pouco da cidade, o Jetta talvez seja uma opção mais adequada. Até manobrar com ele parece tão fácil quanto com o Virtus, apesar das dimensões maiores e do 0,3 cm extra de diâmetro de giro.

Mas é preciso reiterar: especialmente em rodovias, ele não oferecerá uma experiência tão empolgante de dirigir nem uma conexão tão próxima entre homem e veículo quanto a do Virtus.
Na cabine, o Jetta é superior não somente por oferecer mais espaço (afinal, são quase 4 cm de ganho em entre-eixos e 5 cm em largura), mas também porque possui acabamento com materiais mais nobres no painel e nas guarnições das portas dianteiras, além de freio de estacionamento elétrico e teto solar como opcional.

E só o Virtus possui bancos dianteiros esportivos, assim como saídas de ar e encostos de cabeça ajustáveis na fileira traseira – o Jetta, surpreendentemente, traz encostos fixos e costurados.

Mas esse sistema de áudio tem seu ônus. O subwoofer rouba um bom pedaço do volume do porta-malas.
A Volkswagen afirma que o bagageiro do Virtus GTS tem a mesma capacidade das demais versões, 521 litros, tratando o reposicionamento da divisória para o estepe como um “ajuste variável de espaço”.
Na prática, não há como configurar a altura dessa divisória sem tirar o subwoofer, o que significa que os 510 l do Jetta acabam se mostrando mais realistas e generosos.

Por ser um projeto de custo menor e produzido localmente, o Virtus GTS tem uma cesta de peças mais comedida. Tirando os faróis full-led, herdados do Polo GTi europeu, os demais itens são todos mais em conta que os do Jetta, modelo importado do México.
Amortecedores, pastilhas de freio, para-brisa e lanternas traseiras do sedã médio custam quase ou mais que o dobro do preço do compacto.
Já o retrovisor é mais de cinco vezes mais caro. Se serve de consolo, a cotação de seguro do Jetta é bem mais barata, (provavelmente porque, na versão GTS, o Virtus é visto como um carro com maior probabilidade de se envolver em acidentes). Além disso, curiosamente a VW subsidia as três primeiras revisões do Jetta, mas não as do Virtus GTS.

Enfim, o Virtus GTS diverte mais ao volante, mas, para quem procura puramente por esportividade, já existe o Polo GTS, com carroceria hatch.
Os principais predicados de um sedã – espaço, conforto e porta-malas – são supridos com mais eficácia pelo Jetta, abdicando muito pouco do desempenho e com custos de aquisição e manutenção um pouco maiores, mas não inacessíveis para quem está disposto a gastar mais de R$ 100.000 em um automóvel.
