Rise in catalytic converter thefts fills up dealership service departments
There has been a sharp increase in the number of catalytic converters being stolen across the country, resulting in vehicles stacking up in dealership service departments as customers endure costly and lengthy repairs and manufacturers, police and legislators search for a way to curb the thefts.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau said there were 14,433 catalytic converter thefts reported in the U.S. in 2020, the last year figures were available. That's a fourfold increase from 3,389 theft cases reported in 2019. In 2018, there were just 1,298 thefts reported. Officials hinted that 2021 figures could show a dramatic increase.
On one day in April in Houston, AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway had 66 vehicles waiting to have their catalytic converters replaced after thieves stole them. Two of those vehicles were back for a second time after being targeted again.
While any vehicle can fall prey to thieves, some Toyota models are coveted because their catalytic converters have a higher concentration of precious metals than those of other manufacturers, so they command higher prices.
Pickups such as Toyota's Tundra and Tacoma are popular with converter bandits because they can have up to four converters and sit relatively high off the ground. That makes it easier for thieves to slip underneath and use a cordless saw to remove the mufflerlike converters, said Craig Fletcher, service director at AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway. Toyota Prius hybrids and SUVs and certain Honda four-cylinder vehicles are also particularly prized, as are Ford F-Series and Ram 1500 pickups.
"It's been a constant problem for the last 12 months," Fletcher said. "Approximately a year ago, the price of the materials that Toyota uses for the converters went through the roof."
Catalytic converters contain just a few grams of costly metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium. The rare elements react with combustion gases to reduce the amount of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide in a vehicle's exhaust.
Rhodium's current market price is about $16,600 per ounce. Platinum is trading for around $919 an ounce, while palladium is in the neighborhood of $2,200 per ounce.
The skyrocketing value of the converters makes comprehensive auto insurance a must-have, said Sgt. Tracy Hicks of the Houston Police Department's Auto Theft Crime Task Force. Replacing catalytic converters can run as high as $11,000, depending on the vehicle and any collateral damage to items such as wiring and fuel, transmission or coolant lines.
Hicks said certain Toyota converters were bringing $2,000 when the price of the metals skyrocketed last year.
Depending on the market price of metals, the powertrain and type of vehicle, recyclers will pay up to $1,500 for a single catalytic converter, said Doug Seliger, marketing director of PGM of Texas, which specializes in catalytic converter recycling. A set of four Tundra converters, for example, is currently bringing $500 to $1,000, he said.
Cheaper, riskier alternatives
Consumers could also benefit from having an insurance policy that covers long-term car rentals. The rampant crimes are resulting in lengthy wait times to get customers back on the road. Fletcher noted one customer's Tundra had been at the Houston Toyota dealership at least 147 days. He said converters are ordered for each specific vehicle and can take weeks to arrive.
"A group of converters for one side [of the vehicle] will come in, while the parts for the other side will show up later," Fletcher said. "Very seldom do all the converters come in at the same time."
Adam Haner, service director at Helfman Motors in Houston, said replacement catalytic converters are on "intergalactic back order."
"Having to tell customers they're facing weeks of delay before they get the converters and can use their vehicle [again] has been the hardest part of my job in my 19 years here," he said.
In some cases, victims who didn't have comprehensive coverage or waited so long for original replacement parts that their rental car coverage expired have turned to cheaper, less reliable aftermarket catalytic converters. One Toyota technician said some customers, at their own cost, have had muffler shops weld in tubing to patch the exhaust system just to get their vehicles back on the road.
Even if the damage seems minor, such as when the thief gives up and just leaves a saw cut in the exhaust tubing, Haner doesn't recommend or perform what he calls "Band-Aid" fixes.
"If you weld the pipe up, it could cause further issues down the road," he said. "There's just too much potential liability. Plus, we just try to do the right thing."
AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway and other dealerships sell and install anti-theft catalytic converter shields that are available through a number of aftermarket vendors. Fletcher says the devices range from $750 to $900 installed per vehicle.
A Toyota accessory guide offers a dozen catalytic converter shields for various models, from the 2001 Prius to the 2022 Tundra, Sequoia and Tacoma.
Still, with sticker prices ranging from $160 to $570 for the parts alone, the devices are not for everyone, said Paul Le Blanc, service director of Longo Toyota in El Monte, Calif.
"We only see two to three [shield sales] per month from parts," he said. "One of the reasons why is the cost. I believe most people who buy them probably had a converter stolen already."
A legislative fix?
Toyota Motor North America called catalytic converter thefts an industrywide challenge and told Automotive News it was committed to working with all stakeholders to protect vehicle owners.
"In our view, the most effective approach requires close collaboration between the broader automotive industry and local and state authorities to devise legislative solutions aimed at eliminating the market for these stolen parts," the automaker said in a written statement.
Catalytic converter rip-offs have taken a more violent turn as more hardened criminals attempt to cash in. Confrontations can turn deadly. In Houston, an off-duty sheriff's deputy was fatally shot in March during a parking lot gun battle with three men who had targeted his vehicle as he and his wife shopped at a supermarket.
In January, U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, R-Ind., introduced the Preventing Auto Recycling Thefts (PART) Act. If passed, the legislation would aid law enforcement by requiring VINs be stamped onto catalytic converters of new vehicles, setting up stricter record-keeping of buyers of catalytic converters and codifying catalytic converter thefts as criminal offenses.
"This is a clean, straight-forward bill that has the potential to solve a serious problem plaguing far too many vehicle owners and law enforcement officials across the country," Baird told Automotive News. In April, the National Automobile Dealers Association called the measure a legislative priority and urged lawmakers to co-sponsor the bill.
Baird said he was hopeful the bill would gain bipartisan support because he believed it would close loopholes preventing law enforcement from holding converter thieves accountable.
"Americans have enough to worry about," he said. "Spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars replacing a required car part shouldn't be one of them."

2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture First Drive
I don’t know why Nissan gets so much flak for its ancient Frontier and 370Z when there’s a fellow Japanese automaker equally guilty of neglecting its lineup: Toyota. The Tundra pickup, for instance, was first introduced in 2007 and hasn’t seen any significant changes since. The brand’s Sequoia and Land Cruiser SUVs are both just a year younger, making their debuts in 2008. And nearly as geriatric as the Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser is the SUV I’ve spent the last couple weeks driving, the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture. Although the 4Runner Venture is a new special edition trim level for 2020, the 4Runner has been soldiering on with little love from Toyota since it was born back in 2009—a lifetime ago in automotive years. So that begs the question, if you’re in the market for a rugged, robust, off-road-capable SUV, is the Toyota 4Runner a good buy?
What’s the Toyota 4Runner Venture?
The 4Runner Venture will be mechanically familiar to anyone who’s shopped for a 4Runner in the past decade. Built on a traditional body-on-frame platform shared with the Toyota Tacoma, Land Cruiser Prado, and Lexus GX, the 2020 4Runner Venture sports Toyota’s old 4.0-liter V-6 under its hood. Upgraded since its 2002 debut with Toyota’s dual variable valve timing technology, it makes 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque on all new 4Runners. It’s paired with a five-speed automatic gearbox and, standard on the Venture trim, four-wheel drive.
Based on the 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium, the “special edition” 4Runner Venture also comes standard with an electronically locking rear differential and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control off-road systems. Venture-exclusive bits include a Yakima cargo basket on the roof, 4Runner TRD Pro wheels with a matte-gray finish, all-weather floormats, and black painted mirrors and door handles. The most significant option on our 4Runner Venture tester was Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS, for $1,750), which features hydraulic piping that automatically disconnects the 4Runner’s anti-roll bars when it senses a wheel in the air off-road, dropping it back down to the ground.
How Does the Toyota 4Runner Drive?
In the age of the crossover, the 4Runner drives like a throwback to a mostly bygone era. Its 4.0-liter V-6 may be big for a six-cylinder, but its 270 horses and 278 lb-ft of torque are now eclipsed by more modern powertrains in competitors, like Jeep’s 3.6-liter V-6 and eight-speed auto combo, found in both the Wrangler (285 hp) and Grand Cherokee (295 hp), or the former’s hybridized 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, which produces 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
No one will mistake the 4Runner for being quick, but the old 4.0-liter and five-speed combo is a less frustrating drive partner than the 3.5-liter V-6 and six-speed auto that replaced this powertrain in the Tacoma. The 4Runner’s torque comes on relatively low in its powerband, which, when combined with the five-speed’s longggg gear ratios (and assuming you keep your foot buried in the throttle), gives the Toyota class-competitive acceleration and passing performance. That’s assuming the auto is in the right gear, of course, as shifts are as slow and slurred as our crew after an evening of aged brown liquids.
More impressive than the way it accelerates is the way our KDSS-equipped 4Runner rides. Despite its light, vague steering and penchant for midcorner axle hop and chassis shudder on harsh impacts both on- and off-road, the 4Runner’s KDSS system still does a remarkable job at quieting down the ride. Working hand in hand with its high-sidewall tires, the 4Runner floats over bumps rather well, minimizing the transfer of impacts into the cabin and to the driver.
What’s the 4Runner’s Interior Like?
Speaking of the average consumer, the 4Runner’s cabin more than anything else will betray the Toyota’s age. The world has changed much in the last decade, but the 4Runner hasn’t; the biggest differences between the 2020 4Runner and 2010 model is a revised dash with a digital driver’s instrument display, some minor tweaks to the center stack, and a new 8.0-inch infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The cabin is functional but dated when compared with those of the Jeep Wrangler, the similarly old Grand Cherokee, and the upcoming 2021 Ford Bronco. The front seats are comfortable—though headroom is tight due to a combination of our tester’s optional moonroof and the 4Runner’s low roofline—and the back seat is spacious. The 4Runner’s sliding rear cargo deck, a $350 option, is also quite useful. It slides the whole cargo floor backward over the rear bumper, eliminating the need to reach deep into the Toyota’s deep cargo area to snag loose items.
There’s without a doubt room for improvement, though. For starters, the cabin is loud. Thanks to the optional TRD exhaust’s banal drone at highway speeds and a general lack of sound deadening, you’ll likely find yourself constantly reaching for the volume knob on the freeway in an attempt to hear your music. Material quality and fit and finish are also at least a generation behind what Toyota has proven itself capable of on newer vehicles, like the RAV4.
How Much Does the 4Runner Venture Cost?
More than any other place, here’s where the 4Runner Venture runs into its biggest hurdle: It’s a poor value. At $48,227 as tested ($44,755 to start), the 4Runner Venture is undercut by both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. A comparably equipped Wrangler Unlimited Sport S can be had for $44,910, or, if having a special edition is a must for you, $45,560 for a Wrangler Unlimited Willys with a more efficient turbocharged engine and eight-speed automatic. A Grand Cherokee would be even cheaper—a similarly spec’d Grand Cherokee North Edition can be had for $44,305. Both not only offer up more refined cabins and modern powertrains than the Toyota (not to mention at least equal off-road capability), but, adding insult to injury, are decidedly more efficient, too. The EPA rates the 4Runner Venture at 16/19/17 mpg city/highway/combined, while the Grand Cherokee nets 18/25/21 mpg, and the Wrangler 18/22/20 mpg with the V-6, or 21/22/21 mpg with the turbo-four. Of course, both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee can become significantly more expensive and even crest $60,000 fully loaded, but their base models are so capable, they still outshine the 4Runner Venture.
So, Is the Toyota 4Runner a Good Buy?
On my first day of Media 101 at St. Bonaventure University, I learned that as a journalist, you should never ask a question in a headline that you don’t answer. So as to not disappoint professor John Hanchette: Is the 2020 4Runner a good purchase? In a word, no. Buying a new 2020 4Runner is a lot like buying a new iPhone 4 at iPhone 11 prices—yes, there’s lots to love about the iPhone 4, but it doesn’t necessarily meet all of our modern needs, especially at the 2020 asking price. The 4Runner is handsome, off-road capable, and rides well, but the competitors offer up better performance, better efficiency, and better quality for the money.

Buying a Used Truck? These 5 Rule the Worksite
The best used trucks have come a long way from the days of basic bench seats and vinyl upholstery. Modern trucks are more powerful and more capable than ever, but they are also more comfortable, as automakers have responded to the changing demands of truck owners.
In this guide, we’ve highlighted five rugged trucks that are ideally suited for the worksite. If you don’t find the perfect work truck here, check out listings on CarGurus, where you can narrow down your search based on bed-size, cab-size, trim, engine, options, and more.
1. Ford F-150
Years: 2017-2019 Trim: XLT SuperCab 8’ Bed 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 — $30,000
The Ford F-150 SuperCab has a clamshell door design, which means you have to open the large front door to open the smaller rear half-door. If you plan on mostly using the front seats, this is fine, but if you plan on hauling the kids around a lot, you’d do well to step up to the SuperCrew version of the F-150 with its full four-door setup.
If you want the convenience of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto look for a model from 2017 onwards with Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system.
The 2017 F-150 comes standard with a 282-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and many XLT trims are available with one of the more powerful EcoBoost V6 engines. For 2018, there was a shakeup in the powertrain offerings, including a more powerful base V6, now making 290 horsepower.

2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Years: 2017-2018 Trim: LT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $23,000 — $30,000
The previous generation of Silverado was coming to an end in 2018, which means Chevrolet added extra equipment to entice buyers who might otherwise have waited for the new model.
Step inside and not much has changed from this older truck to the latest version. The control layout is nearly identical, and the latter years of the LT trim come with the MyLink infotainment system that provides a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Unlike the F-150, which has clamshell doors on its extended cab truck, the extended cab version of the Silverado utilizes conventional second row doors. Many models also feature a front bench with a middle seat that folds into a center console.
While the standard engine is a 4.3-liter V6, those wanting more power should keep an eye out for a model with the 5.3-liter V8, which puts out a stout 355 horsepower. All versions of the Silverado come with the helpful bed corner steps.
Search for a Chevrolet Silverado on CarGurus
3. Ram 1500
Years: 2016-2018 Trim: SLT Quad Cab 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 – $27,000
Ram does things a bit differently from Ford and Chevy. The truck-maker acknowledged and responded to the idea that its pickups were being used for a lot of things other than worksite duties, such as commutes and road trips. As a result, the Ram 1500 does away with traditional leaf spring suspension, and instead features a multi-link setup at the rear to give it a more comfortable ride. But that doesn’t mean the Ram 1500 can’t handle a bit of work.
The Ram 1500 comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 making 305 horsepower, but many vehicles from these years can be found with the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. Some are even available with the EcoDiesel V6, which offers V8-levels of torque with improved efficiency.
Like the Silverado’s Double Cab, the Ram 1500’s Quad Cab uses conventionally opening second-row doors. Inside, the Ram 1500 uses high-quality cabin materials, and has easy-to-use controls. The SLT comes with power windows and locks, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Higher trims come with a larger touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (starting in 2018), and the RamBox cargo system. There’s no doubt that, for the money, the Ram 1500 offers a comfortable ride, a strong base V6, and a spacious interior.
Search for a Ram 1500 on CarGurus
2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain SLT
4. GMC Sierra 1500
Years: 2015-2016 Trim: SLT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $19,000 – $30,000
The previous generation of both GM trucks (Silverado and Sierra) have more conventional styling than their current counterparts.
The Sierra SLE is very similar to the Silverado LT, in that it is slightly elevated from the base truck and provides some welcome creature comforts. The SLE can be had with many different options; while most will come with the basic 6-speaker stereo and USB port, others may be found with the optional GMC IntelliLink infotainment system. This is similar to Chevy MyLink and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SLE trim comes standard with the 4.3-liter V8 engine, but many can be found with the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine. If you don’t need four-wheel drive, you can save a few dollars by choosing a rear-wheel-drive model.
Search for a used GMC Sierra 1500 on CarGurus
5. Toyota Tundra
Years: 2012-2016 Trim: SR5 Double Cab Approx price: $20,000 – $30,000
If you’re looking for something a bit different from the Big Three, the Toyota Tundra is big, spacious, and comes with standard V8 power for all the years we are recommending here. Despite being a bit long-in-the-tooth, Tundras hold their value well, with prices for the SR5 being close to that of Big Three trucks with similar bed/cab/powertrain configurations.
The standard engine in the Tundra is a 4.6-liter V8 making 310 horsepower, though many SR5s can be found with the optional 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. While it may seem advantageous to go for the less powerful V8 to save a few dollars, it is actually less efficient than the larger V8.
The Tundra has a very spacious cabin. All trims, including the base SR come equipped with the Entune infotainment system, which was updated for 2016. It features a 6.1-inch touchscreen, but while it is very easy to use, it does lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Big-Rig Technologies Provide Peek at Pickup Truck Future
Advanced technology powertrains and self-driving vehicles are two important topics in the auto industry that likely will have a major impact on pickup trucks in the future. Just about every automaker has powertrain and autonomy advancements in their strategy plans. But even though automakers are looking to the future, it looks like the first real-world applications of advanced powertrains and vehicle autonomy will be in the big-rig cargo-hauling arena.
Case in point: Toyota just announced at the 2019 CES in Las Vegas that it will partner with big-rig-maker Kenworth Truck Co. to produce the first production Class 8 hydrogen-fuel-cell big rigs to haul heavy cargo across Southern California from the Port of Los Angeles, one of the largest ports in the world. The first real-world application of the new powertrains, a direct result of an earlier Toyota collaboration with Kenworth, will be in the popular Kenworth T680 platform. The fuel-cell powertrain has a 300-mile-plus range; Toyota says the 10 hydrogen-powered electric big rigs will go into operation in 2020. Even though Toyota isn't saying so, we imagine that a version of this new powertrain technology could trickle down to more consumer vehicles like the Sequoia SUV or full-size Tundra pickup truck. However, to make that happen, the powertrains will have to be smaller and lighter, and more hydrogen fueling stations will have to be built.
Also at CES, Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler revealed its newest Freightliner Cascadia Class 8 rig that's equipped with Mercedes' most advanced semi-autonomous technology to date. The German automaker has been working on big-rig autonomy for long-distance, cross-country cargo hauling for several years, and we were quite impressed when we got a chance to ride inside one. But now Daimler is taking big-rig driving autonomy to a whole new level.
The Freightliner's newest semi-autonomous-driving system is categorized as SAE Level 2, meaning it has automated functions like startup, braking, acceleration and steering but the driver must remain engaged with the driving tasks and monitor the environment. Features like adaptive cruise control, collision warning and automatic emergency braking could reduce rear-end collisions by as much as 60 to 80 percent, as well as reduce driver fatigue. The big news, though, is Daimler's ambitious plan to skip Level 3 conditional autonomy — in which a driver is necessary but not required to monitor the driving environment — to Level 4 high automation, meaning the vehicle can perform all driving functions under certain conditions. In Level 3, the driver must be ready to take control of the vehicle at all times; in Level 4, drivers "may" have the option to control the vehicle.
We think semi-autonomous and autonomous driving makes more sense in the cargo-hauling sector than in the personal consumer arena because there's a consistent amount of big-rig traffic flowing on standardized routes with little variation. Even consumer electric vehicle companies like Tesla are poised to jump into the big-rig sector with semi-autonomous vehicles to grab attention and potential profits. And at some point in 2019, Tesla should reveal its consumer electric pickup truck, likely with some new big-rig technology inside.
Whether these new powertrain or self-driving technologies stay exclusive to the big-rig sector or filter down to our cargo-hauling three-quarter and one-ton pickup trucks is anyone's guess. All we know is that it's not likely to happen anytime soon. But it sure is interesting to think about.

The Clinton- and Bush-Era Cars Still Sold Today
We hear it all the time: Keep politics out of MotorTrend. Well, you’re in luck, because despite the political nature of this article’s title, there are no political undertones to the text. Did you support Bill Clinton while Newt Gingrich and Ken Starr tried to take him down? Whatever. Were you hooting and hollering as George W. Bush spoke on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln under a “Mission Accomplished” banner? It’s irrelevant.
Neither of these presidents’ accomplishments, failures, or policies matter. We’re simply using their presidencies as a measure of time. After all, it’s one thing to say an automaker’s been selling the same basic car for a dozen years; it’s another to realize an automaker first introduced a specific car it still sells while William Jefferson Clinton or George Walker Bush helmed the Executive Branch of the United States government.
1996 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana
This van represented the first redesign of General Motors full-size cargo and passenger vans since the early 1970s. The 1996 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana received modern styling and safety features, as well as stiff new underpinnings. Almost 25 years later, the vans soldier on. Minor facelifts and powertrain improvements helped the vans maintain some semblance of modernity over the years. That said, GM’s full-size vans look and feel comparatively ancient next to more contemporary competitors such as the Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and Ram ProMaster.
2005 Nissan Frontier
Unlike consumer interest in mid-size pickups, which ebbs and flows like the Colorado River, the Nissan Frontier persists—a living fossil, like a horseshoe crab or a coelacanth. The Japanese automaker took the wraps off the truck at the 2004 Detroit auto show and announced its arrival for the 2005 model year. Using a variant of the frame that underpins the full-size Nissan Titan pickup, the Frontier impressed us on its debut with its “well-controlled and decently compliant ride” and available 265 horsepower 4.0-liter V-6 engine. Nissan rested on its laurels, though, and changed little about the model in the ensuing years. The brand finally made a noteworthy change to the Frontier for the 2020 model year with the introduction of a new 3.8-liter V-6 engine, which makes 310 horses and replaces the truck’s prior 4.0-liter V-6 and previously standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Powertrain aside, little else separates the 2005 and 2020 Nissan Frontiers.
2007 Toyota Tundra
The Toyota Tundra finally went toe-to-toe with the domestic full-size pickup trucks for the 2007 model year. Bold and brash, the second-generation Tundra carried over its predecessor’s 4.0-liter V-6 and 4.7-liter V-8 engines, but also offered buyers a new 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 option. Despite the thrust of its big bent-eight, the Tundra failed to take down the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado in a comparison test. Small improvements included the arrival of a more modern 4.6-liter V-8 engine to replace the aging 4.7-liter unit, as well as revisions to the exterior and interior for 2014. In spite of this, the Tundra that Toyota sells today remains largely the same as the truck it introduced during Bush’s second term in office.
2008 Dodge Challenger
Following the success of its Challenger concept car at the 2006 Detroit auto show, Dodge greenlit the rear-drive coupe for production. The 2008 Dodge Challenger arrived in high-horsepower SRT8 form boasting a 425-hp 6.1-liter V-8 that pushed the 197.7-inch long muscle car to 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds. Dodge added less powerful six- and eight-cylinder engine options for 2009, and an even rowdier 470-hp 6.4-liter V-8 for the 2011 model year. The real party arrived for 2015, though, with an exterior and interior refresh and a new Hellcat trim, which included a 707-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. The rip-snorting powertrain allowed the 4,449-pound coupe to hit the mile-a-minute mark in 3.7 seconds and cross the quarter-mile after 11.7 seconds at 125.4 mph. Dodge then took things a couple of steps further with the 840-hp 2018 Challenger SRT Demon and the 797-hp 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Although Dodge continues to develop the Challenger, the big coupe remains—at its core—fundamentally the same vehicle it was more than a decade ago.
2008 Dodge Grand Caravan
The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan ditched its predecessor’s jelly bean-like looks for square wares that loosely resemble the styling of the original 1984 Caravan. Unfortunately, the model’s plastic-heavy interior failed to impress. Dodge quickly reworked the Grand Caravan with a 2011 model year refresh that gave the minivan slightly less blocky styling details, a reworked interior, and a 3.6-liter V-6 underhood. After that, crickets. While the Grand Caravan’s sibling, the Chrysler Town & Country, retired after the 2016 model year to make way for the arrival of the new Pacifica minivan, the Dodge keeps on chugging. Although the geriatric Grand Caravan remains a part of the 2020 Dodge lineup, it’s due to disappear from the American brand’s 2021 model line.
2008 Lexus LX/Toyota Land Cruiser
Lexus and Toyota revealed new iterations of the LX and Land Cruiser for the 2008 model year, the former of which dons the name LX 570, an homage to the 5.7-liter V-8 engine that rests underhood. Despite its name’s lack of digits, the same engine motivates the Land Cruiser. Like prior iterations of these pricey SUVs, the latest LX 570 and Land Cruiser are big and boxy. Lexus made some minor improvements to the 2013 LX, which received the brand’s “spindle” grille design. The hulking luxury SUV benefitted from a more thorough reskin for 2016—coinciding with a facelift for the more utilitarian Land Cruiser. A dozen years on, though, these two Japanese SUVs still maintain much of the same mechanical pieces as the day Lexus and Toyota tore each models’ wraps off.
2008 Toyota Sequoia
As goes the Tundra, so goes the Sequoia. One model year after Toyota revealed the redesigned Tundra, its SUV sibling received a full makeover. The body-on-frame people mover received a front end and dashboard like that of the Tundra, as well as new mechanical bits—such as an independent rear suspension and an optionally available 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8. While the Tundra received a thorough mid-cycle update for the 2014 model year, the Sequoia soldiers on largely unchanged from the day it broke cover at the 2007 Los Angeles auto show.
2009 Dodge Journey
When it was introduced, the 2009 Dodge Journey brought crossover sensibilities to the American brand’s largely car and SUV dominant model line. Although it offered handsome looks when new, the Journey’s low-quality interior materials and middling powertrains (a standard 173-hp 2.4-liter I-4 and four-speed automatic transmission, and an optional 235-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic) failed to impress. Dodge updated the model with a higher-quality interior, revised styling, and a new V-6 engine for 2011. While the 283-hp unit brought more liveliness to the Journey and allowed the 4,350-pound, all-wheel-drive crossover to hit 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, the standard, pokey I-4 remained a sore spot. The addition of a butcher looking Crossroad package added somewhat to the Journey’s appeal, however, the loss of the V-6 engine for the 2020 model year ultimately makes this aging crossover an even harder sell in today’s competitive marketplace.
2009 Dodge Ram 1500
Dodge’s last pickup entered the market for the 2009 model year with evolutionary styling and a revolutionary (by truck standard’s) coil spring rear suspension setup. In the early 2010s, Ram formally broke away from Dodge and the former Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck received the simpler Ram 1500 nomenclature. The Ram-badged truck became the 1500 Classic for 2019 in order to separate it from the redesigned Ram 1500. Despite the two Rams filling the same essential role in the truck brand’s model line, the 1500 Classic continues on as an entry-level alternative to the dynamically superior, MotorTrend Truck of the Year winning, new 1500.
2009 Nissan 370Z
Approximately six years after the arrival of the reborn Nissan 350Z sports car, the Japanese brand let loose the thoroughly reworked 370Z. As its name implies, the new car traded its predecessor’s 306-hp 3.5-liter V-6 for a 332-hp 3.7-liter unit. With nearly four inches cut from its wheelbase, more than two inches added to its rear track, and a few pounds slashed from its curb weight, the new Z car promised noteworthy performance improvements. Unfortunately, the engine’s extra displacement results in additional coarseness. Although initially available in both coupe and roadster form, Nissan culled the drop-top from the lineup for the 2020 model year, leaving the hard-topped model as the sole Z option. Fortunately, the long-lived 370Z is due to go out to pasture in order to make room for a completely redesigned Nissan Z car.
2009 Nissan GT-R
After years of begging, North American consumers finally got the chance to own Nissan’s legendary GT-R for the 2009 model year. The redesigned super-coupe no longer served as a variant of the Skyline (sold here—at the time—as the Infiniti G37), and instead becomes its own dedicated model. With all-wheel-drive, a slick six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, a 480-hp twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 engine, and a starting price just north of $70,000, the GT-R offered six-figure performance in a five-figure package. The car’s dynamic capabilities and inherent value earned it our Car of the Year award. Nissan continued to improve the model throughout the next decade, with the current, entry-level GT-R making a full 565-hp from its twin-turbo six-cylinder engine. The car also costs a good deal more these days, with the least expensive 2020 GT-R ringing in at $115,335—more than $40,000 higher than the 2009 GT-R’s cost of entry.

2020 Toyota Sequoia joins the TRD Pro off-road gang
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=6932&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr It’s not only American brands offering full-size off-roaders these days. Having already joined the fun with a Tundra pickup packed with off-road goodies engineered under the TRD Pro banner, Toyota is now giving the Sequoia SUV the same treatment. Making its debut on Thursday at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, the 2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro with its seating for seven makes it possible for even big families to head off-road. Key to the vehicle’s off-road chops is the custom suspension with TRD-tuned Fox shock absorbers, which are designed to become firmer the more they are compressed to resist bottoming over rough trail surfaces. 2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro Like all TRD Pro models, the Sequoia TRD Pro has been dressed to stand out. It rides on 18-inch BBS wheels and features a custom grille with a large “TOYOTA” script shown prominently. There are also LED headlights and fog lights, a front skid plate, running boards, roof rack, and cat-back exhaust. The sole powertrain is the Sequoia’s 5.7-liter V-8 which generates 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic and an all-wheel-drive system with a locable Torsen limited-slip center differential and a two-speed transfer case for low-range mode. The arrival of the Sequoia TRD Pro coincides with a series of upgrades for other TRD Pro members for 2020. All of them feature new infotainment systems with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The 4Runner TRD Pro also benefits from a revised grille, while the Tacoma TRD Pro sports a host of upgrades including several key electronic driver aids. Finally, the Tundra TRD Pro for 2020 will be offered in both Double Cab and CrewMax configurations. 2020 Toyota Tundra Release Date
2020 Toyota Tundra
2020 Toyota Tundra
2020 Toyota Tundra Review – we are still waiting for the redesign of the company’s famous full-sized truck. The new generation will finally come in 2020 Toyota Tundra. The legendary truck, known for its unbeatable durability, has been on the road for 18 years. The current second generation is present since 2006. This is a fairly long period even for this segment, especially considering that the other trucks on the market are much younger. Interestingly, the sales of this old truck are not declining yet. However, the most popular car brand in the world will not work and the new generation is on the right track.
According to the latest reports, the new 2020 Tundra is at an advanced stage of development and is expected to arrive next year. Expect to see many new features in terms of style, design features and more. Still, we probably will not see bigger changes under the hood.
2020 Toyota Tundra Changes
What the redesign of this legend could bring. First, the company is developing a completely new architecture for this opportunity, which is almost complete. In addition, the new platform will be used later by another iconic model, the new generation Land Cruiser. What the platform will bring is difficult to say. Still, we expect to see a reduction in weight. Considering that most of the big trucks of today play in weight tables and lightweight materials both in the chassis and in the chassis, we could expect something similar from the new 2020 Toyota Tundra. Still, it is difficult to expect a full body of aluminum like the F-150, mainly because Toyota will not play with its unparalleled reputation for durability and reliability.
2020 Toyota Tundra Interior
2020 Toyota Tundra Design
While the development of the new platform and chassis is almost complete, we do not know exactly how things are going with the sheet metal panels. It is still difficult to predict what the new 2020 Toyota Tundra will be like, but we are pretty sure that the current form will remain practically the same. On the other side, expect to see sharper lines, a new front fascia, headlights, a grid, etc.
The new internal news is also expected. We should see a completely new cabin, with elements like the new board, the steering wheel, the seats and much more. Finally, we should see a variety of new technologies installed. Speaking of cabin design, expect the same offer as for the current model, which means variants such as single, double and crew cabin.
2020 Toyota Tundra Engines
When it comes to powertrain, there is the possibility of seeing a new engine in the offer. However, the core must remain unchanged. The famous trio of extremely durable and reliable engines will continue, probably with some minor adjustments. To remind you, the incredible 4.0-liter V6 probably will not change, with a maximum power of 276 horsepower.
On the other hand, V8 units could receive some adjustments to obtain more power and better efficiency. The current version of the smaller 4.6-liter V8 offers around 310 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque.
On the other hand, a 5.7-liter V8 is good for approximately 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Finally, consider that the new diesel version is on the way. Due to its freshness, we hope to postpone to the next generation without major changes.
2020 Toyota Tundra Release date and price
The 2020 Toyota Tundra will arrive next year. The most accurate date is yet to come, but we are almost certain that this will happen somewhere in the second half of next year. The price should remain approximately the same, which means that the base model will probably be approximately $ 32,000 / $ 33,000.

2020 Toyota Tundra Specs – The new 2020 Toyota Tundra Diesel will bring additional updates. It will look equivalent to the base model, however, the most critical update is a diesel engine. The tundra is available for a considerable period of time and is one of the most established trucks in the US. The 2020 Tundra Diesel will not support so many changes and revisions. The form will be maintained, together with the general measures. On the outside we will obtain more cleaning and some slight changes. The shelter accompanies adequate height and space for the legs. The new model will offer a bit more extravagance than the current model. In addition to solid V8 gas, Tundra also currently offers a V6 diesel powertrain.
