Walk into a Hyundai showroom and it’s not a question of whether the Korean automaker has the right crossover SUV, it’s a matter of which size crossover is for you. Do you need small or smaller?
If the mid-size Hyundai Santa Fe is too large and the subcompact Venue is too small, then the 2020 Hyundai Tucson or 2020 Hyundai Kona should fit your needs. But which one is best?
The 2020 Tucson is in its final year before a complete overhaul, but its refined exterior and quiet interior warranted a TCC Rating of 6.5 out of 10. The smaller 2020 Hyundai Kona has great standard features and versatility that earns a TCC Rating of 6.0 out of 10.
The difference between the two might come down to how much the rear seat will be used.
Both the Kona and the Tucson seat five passengers with comfortable seats and plenty of space up front. The second row and cargo area are where things part ways.
The rear seats of the Kona have limited knee- and leg room, though head room is average thanks to its bubble roof design. Those seated in the back of the Tucson will thank you with nearly four inches more legroom than the backseat of the Kona, but shoulder space is a narrow proposition. We recommend reclining the seat back for a more comfortable experience.
When it comes to hauling, the Tucson was made with more cargo space in mind. The 30.1 cubic feet of space behind the second row doubles to 61.9 cubic feet of space with the rear seat folded flat. The shorter, smaller Kona has 19.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 45.8 cubic feet behind with the rear seats folded. Despite less cargo space, the Kona gets a nod and a wink for a low load floor and a wide, squarish rear opening that makes loading cargo a breeze. Dogs like getting in and out as much as their humans.
Both the Kona and Tucson put a priority on safety with standard automatic emergency braking. The larger Tucson takes the standard active safety tech a step further with active lane control, which is extra on the Kona. Oddly, theKona offers a head-up display but the Tucson does not. The Tucson can be had with a surround-view camera system but the Kona does not. Fortunately, both models can be had with blind-spot monitors and adaptive cruise control.
The Kona’s look is newer and edgier than the Tucson. Despite the Tucson’s age––it will be redesigned for 2021––the mid-sizer has a refined and adult-like design that won’t offend, or embarrass, anyone. The conservative but handsome exterior complements the simple if not boring interior. If the Tucson is the adult then that makes the Kona the teenager going through some awkward years with mismatched details, two-tier headlights, fake vents, and complicated body lines tacked onto a lifted hatchback. Inside, the Kona is like the Tucson with a logical cabin layout and easy-to-use controls, but there are flourishes like orange or green accents on top-trim models akin to a mohawk on a teenager.
The 2020 Kona and 2020 Tucson are powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4 with a 6-speed automatic powering the front wheels. The Kona’s version makes 147 horsepower while the Tucson in SE or Value trim gets 161 hp. Most Tucsons get a more powerful 181-hp 2.4-liter inline-4, while Limited and Ultimate Konas comes with a 175-hp 1.6-liter turbo-4. The base engine is a better fit in both of these people movers as the 2.4-L doesn’t add much power while the Kona’s turbo-4 comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that gets confused and feels hesitant at city speeds. All-wheel drive is an option on both the Kona and Tucson for $1,400.
Konas cost just over $20,000 while the Tucson is $4,000 more. Both are similarly equipped with standard cloth upholstery, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, air conditioning, and power features. Our pick of the lineups would be the Kona SEL for just over $23,000 as it nets keyless entry with keyless ignition, blind-spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic warnings. For the Tucson, we’d recommend the Value trim for just over $26,000, which adds heated front seats, satellite and HD radio, blind-spot monitors, and keyless ignition along with 8-way power seats.
Both of these crossover SUVs pack a lot of value, but the Tucson offers more space for not much more money and the ability to comfortably haul a family of four and all their gear for a weekend at the lake cottage.

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson does all the things a swell-selling crossover SUV should do. Its great value, strong safety record, and impressive standard features stand out for buyers.
Available from value-oriented to fully-loaded models—SE, SEL, Ultimate, and Limited–the 2020 Tucson features recently-updated styling that echoes the rest of the Hyundai lineup, and while the angular LED running lights and new grille do work on this crossover body. The interior material quality is good and standard features are impressive.
A 2.0-liter inline-4 is the base engine while a more powerful 2.4-liter version is available, and the Tucson can be had with all-wheel drive across the range, while front-wheel drive comes standard. The Tucson sports a comfortable ride quality that stands out among competitors.
Slightly smaller than its competition, the 2020 Tucson seats four adults comfortably, and features 30 cubic feet of storage space in the rear.
With the 2020 Tucson, Hyundai includes standard features like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Tucson also offers a full suite of active safety tech right out of the box. With great crash test scores and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS last year, the Tucson is a safe bet for a family SUV, available at Group 1 Hyundai.
 2020 Hyundai Tucson Styling
The 2020 Hyundai Tucson is handsome by any account. The interior design wears updated styling to match the rest of the Hyundai lineup, the Santa Fe wears somewhat angular LED running lights and an upright grille. The overall design is generically handsome. Subtle plastic body cladding is adventure-aspiring, but it’s also not as elegant as the likes of the Mazda CX-5.
Inside, the cabin is simple, but we’ve got no qualms with the material quality or functionality. A standard touchscreen infotainment system is front and centre, flanked by useful buttons and knobs and featuring clear displays throughout. Finished in a sea of black and grey trim.
 2020 Hyundai Tucson Performance
Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available on the Tucson, as is the case with almost all compact crossovers. A 2.0-liter inline-4 is standard, as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission, but with just 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, acceleration and fuel economy are both thoroughly average.
A 2.4-liter inline-4 is available on the top trim and includes 181 hp and 175 lb-ft.
The Tucson boasts impressive ride quality even in base trim, and this small SUV excels at long road trips over some rivals. A drive mode selector allows for sport mode that stiffens the steering and increases the timing of downshifts, which would be our choice for the way the Tucson should be set up as default.
 2020 Hyundai Tucson Comfort & Quality
The 2020 Hyundai Tucson is smaller than rivals but includes decent passenger and cargo space regardless. With good material quality and a quiet cabin, we give it 7 out of 10 here.
The Tucson sits almost directly in between the smaller Kona and the larger Santa Fe. Six-way adjustable front seats are comfortable and supportive, while 8-way power adjustment for both front chairs is available.
In the rear, two adults will fit comfortably once they’ve reclined the back cushion slightly. Knee and headroom are better than expected.
Behind the rear seats, the Tucson features 30.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which grows to 61.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.
Fit and finish are impressive as is the case with all Hyundais these days, featuring plenty of buttons and switches with clear displays. Hard plastics can be found throughout but are inoffensive, and the top-tier Limited model features leather upholstery and upgraded trim pieces.

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson features some standard active safety features and great crash test scores.
The 2020 Hyundai Tucson gets good crash test scores and standard active safety equipment, making it one of the safest compact crossovers. 
For 2020, the Tucson’s five-star safety rating is renewed from the NHTSA, and while updated figures aren’t available from the IIHS, the new model hasn’t changed, so we expect it to receive the Top Safety Pick+ award yet again. 
Starting with last year’s model, the Tucson offers standard automatic emergency braking and active lane control. Sport and Ultimate models get pedestrian detection, while the Limited model comes with adaptive cruise control with stop and go. All Tucsons but the base SE feature standard blind-spot monitors as well, and a surround-view camera is available on the Limited and Ultimate models at a higher cost. Outward vision isn’t great to the rear, but the Tucson’s not alone in that regard.

The 2020 Hyundai Tucson has no shortage of trim levels in lieu of multiple options packages. 
All Tucsons come with Hyundai’s excellent 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty as well as 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage
In base SE form, the Tucson includes the less powerful 2.0-liter inline-4, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, and automatic emergency braking as well as active lane control. We recommend starting with the Tucson Value trim, which adds heated front seats, satellite and HD radio, blind-spot monitors, keyless ignition, and an 8-way power driver’s seat. It’s our pick in the lineup.
The Tucson SEL model includes the larger and more powerful 2.4-litre engine, as well as automatic climate control and extra USB charging ports among other features. The Sport model has 8-speaker Infinity audio system, LED headlights, wireless phone charging, and styling flourishes. It’s a similar story with the Limited model, which includes power front seats, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and classier styling elements.

In its gas-only guise, the Outlander can seat up to seven regardless of the engine choice. Unlike the even-smaller Kicks, the Rogue Sport is available with all-wheel drive and is one of a small number of subcompact SUVs with a surround view camera. It’s available on the mid-level SV grade if you opt for the SV Technology package, and the range-topping SL gets the 360-degree camera as standard.
2020 Nissan Kicks — $22,015
The least expensive way to get an SUV with a 360-degree camera is by getting the Nissan Kicks. The range-topping SR trim has it, and with a price tag under $23,000. Even when you add the premium package and two-tone exterior colors, the subcompact SUV still checks in well below the $25,000 mark, making it a strong value proposition for those wanting a practical daily driver with a small footprint.

【Ford】 Fucus ST 領軍,展出車單多樣具誠意
位於展區一樓的Ford於車展中以「美式真實力」重現美國66號傳奇公路城鎮經典風貌。展出多款重量級車型,首先為最具話題的全新鋼砲 Focus ST 以外,還有全新限量上市 Focus ST-Line Lommel 賽道特化版、Mustang Black Shadow Edition 限量特仕版,Ranger XLT Super Cab 皮卡則於車展中開放預約訂購,而特別展出的正七人座 Tourneo Connect 雖然還沒公佈正式上市訊息,但極有可能會選擇2020 年上市,展出車型則搭載 1.5 TDCi 柴油動力。而於展前預先公布的 Explorer Police Interceptor® Utility美式特警車,也是車迷朋友不可錯過的重點之一。

【Hyundai】Santa Fe 攜手 Palisade!現代休旅家族到齊
Hyundai 現代汽車由品牌頂級休旅 Palisade 與 全新大七人座休旅 Santa Fe 攜手領軍參加 車展,以及 Kona 家族的 EV 純電休旅、Hybrid 油電複合休旅首次亮相,加上市售車系全新世代陣容共多達14輛展出規模。

【Porsche】電動化即是未來,Taycan 全台首演
以「Soul, electrified. 電掣 神馳」為主軸的 Porsche 明白的宣示電動化即是 Porsche 的未來,展區的主角,不是別人,正式才剛於今年 9 月發表亮相的純電動四門跑車 Taycan 。擔任全台首演要角的,是具有 761 匹馬力,且從靜止加速至時速 100 公里僅需 2.8 秒,更具有 260 km/h 極速表現的 Taycan Turbo S 。而且,具備有 800V 充電技術與先進的熱能管理系統,不但擁有 412 公里的最大續航力,更可快速的完成能源補充。
雖然把電動視為視為來的發展目標,但 Porsche 並未忘記累積歷史的根本,同時也是 Porsche 技術的農場——賽道。在 Porsche 展區,可以見到以 911 GT2 RS 為基礎,復刻經典 935/78 Moby Dick 大白鯨傳奇賽車的新世代 Porsche 935 。還有為 Porsche 於 Le Mans 24 小時耐久賽再造榮光的 919 Hybrid 賽車,還有於 2019/2020 年度賽季進軍 Formula E 電動方程式錦標賽的 99X Electric 賽車,象徵 Porsche 從傳統內燃機動力、 Hybrid 油電複合動力到純電動,一步步的發展,也把 Porsche 的輝煌賽道史,帶到了賽車的未來。

受到 WLTP 影響, 2019 年新車導入作業延宕的 Škoda ,在 2020 世界新車大展中,一口氣展出兩款預計在 2020 年導入的全新車款,包括瞄準中型掀背市場,並且是首款完整搭載 Škoda 新世代設計語言的全新作品 Scala 。軸距 2,649mm 的 Scala 具有 73mm 的後座膝部空間以及 467 公升的行李箱容積,不但足以與 Octavia 媲美,也填補了 Škoda 在中型掀背市場的空缺。預計 2020 年第一季於台灣上市,將進一步豐富 Škoda 的產品陣容。
舞台的另一款要角,則是旗艦房車 Superb 的小改款更新。預計 2020 年第二季推出的小改款 Superb ,透過更立體的水箱護罩以及 LED 燈組的導入,建構更具科技感且更為氣派的產品樣貌,車尾也改用品牌字母排列的方式作為品牌識別,追上 Škoda 新世代產品共通的設計元素。小改款後,改以 1.5 TSI 以及 2.0 TSI 兩款引擎取代過去 1.4 TSI 、 1.8 TSI 以及 2.0 TSI 所組成的動力編成,不過其他產品細節,則仍需等待上市前夕才能確認。
現階段扮演 Škoda 入門休旅角色的 Karoq ,則是藉由車展的機會推出 Karoq Sportline 運動化調校車型,除了黑化的外觀細節與跑車化的內、外觀套件,更換上具有 190 匹馬力輸出的 2.0 TSI 引擎,搭配濕式雙離合器設計的 7 速 DSG 變速箱與全時四輪驅動系統,並把後懸吊改為多連桿設計,具有 0-100km/h 加速 7.1 秒的性能表現以及更出色的操控實力。 Škoda Taiwan 表示, Karoq Sportline 將開出 156.9 萬元的價格,車展期間則是以 149.9 萬元的優惠價接受消費者訂購。
不僅有運動化調校的車型, Škoda 更把達成 WRC2 連續五連霸的冠軍賽車 Fabia R5 運抵台灣,而且來到 2020 年世界新車大展的,還是首度在亞洲亮相的 Fabia R5 Evo 賽車,透過 Fabia R5 的優異表現,搭配結合虛擬實境的虛擬人偶與真人搭配表演,展現 Škoda 的精湛造車工藝與科技實力。除此之外, Škoda Taiwan 也為車主開闢專屬休息區,只應憑 Škoda 車鑰匙就能進入,展現 Škoda 的體貼。

With a family vehicle in particular, settling in to a routine and seeing how it holds up after weeks and months of harried schedules and never-ceasing activities reveals just how much it enables peace of mind or builds frustration.After a pair of glowing reviews and a Comparison Test victory, we still couldnt get enough of Hyundais entirely new 2020 Palisade. Hyundai has been delivering ever more refined products behind its Hyundai badge and making impressive first steps into the luxury market with its Genesis brand, and the Palisade makes a much more convincing play in the midsize-large-ish three-row SUV arena than the awkwardly styled Veracruz and undersized Santa Fe XL. There has certainly been a lot of interest in the Palisade, both from my colleagues in the office and hockey parents from my sons team, so we hope to answer any and all questions we get about its driving characteristics, capabilities and features. Hyundai Palisade 2020 et Lincoln Versailles 1977 !

On repart de plus belle. Après avoir hérité de plusieurs véhicules dits «reconduits» au cours des dernière semaines, c’est à mon tour de conduire de véritables nouveautés. Par conséquent, cette semaine, il s’agit d’un nouveau VUS (ou VUM, si vous préférez), le Hyundai Palisade 2020.
Au départ, sachez que le Palisade remplace ni plus ni moins le Santa Fe XL en tant que VUS à trois rangées de sièges. Toutefois, comme on peut le voir, il en est nettement plus élégant. Et même si le véhicule vous semble un peu «gros», il ne l’est pas plus que les Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander ou Chevrolet Traverse actuels. Ses lignes modernes ont rapidement attiré l’attention de tous les automobilistes à qui je l’ai présenté. Sa ligne à la fois moderne et un peu avant-gardiste est très plaisante à l’œil. Quant au nom Palisade, on se doute que le constructeur sud-coréen l’a choisi pour sa signification géographique. En effet, deux des plus belles formations géographiques des États-Unis sont le Pacific Palisades, la falaise surplombant l’Océan Pacifique à Santa Monica en Californie et le New Jersey Palisades, les falaises surplombant le rivière Hudson face à la ville de New York.

Malgré le fait que ce Hyundai remplace le Santa Fe XL, il pourrait aussi bien remplacer également la fourgonnette Entourage du même constructeur, un véhicule qui a disparu du marché il y a à peine quelques années, ne serait-ce que par son espace intérieur et sa capacité d’accueillir jusqu’à sept personnes à son bord. Le modèle de base de Palisade dont le prix débute à 38 499 $, est livrable avec la traction avant mais plus d’un acheteur optera certes pour la traction intégrale HTrac (optionnelle sur le modèle de base Essential mais standard avec les autres). Question configuration mécanique, il n’y a qu’un seul moteur au catalogue, le V6 de 3,8 litres de Hyundai qui fait 291 chevaux et 262 li-pi de couple combiné à une boîte automatique à huit rapports. Rien de spectaculaire ici mais, suite à l’essai d’une semaine au volant de cette camionnette tant en ville que sur autoroute, j’en suis venu à la conclusion que cet ensemble est nettement suffisant pour déplacer le Palisade avec facilité. Par exemple, pour atteindre le cap des 100 km/h, il lui faut une huitaine de secondes ce qui n’est pas si mal pour un véhicule de quelque 2000 kilos (environ 4400 livres). Notons qu’il est aussi capable de tirer des remorques allant jusqu’à 5000 livres.

Si l’extérieur est agréable à l’œil, c’est surtout l’intérieur qui attirera l’acheteur. En effet, en plus d’être vaste, comme mentionné plus haut, il est aussi superbe tout en demeurant modeste. Du moins, c’est ce que j’ai pu constater en conduisant la version Ultimate de ce véhicule. Au départ, je dois souligner que le dessin du tableau de bord est réussi même s’il est d’une grande simplicité. Ce qui m’a surpris, ce sont les caméras extérieures placées dans les rétroviseurs qui transmettent l’image de ce qui se présente aux flancs du véhicule quand on actionne les clignotants. Cette image se reproduit dans les cadrans devant le conducteur! Très utile! Outre cela, l’instrumentation est facilement lisible et les commandes du chauffage et de la climatisation sont aussi à portée de main. Le grand écran central (GPS, radio, etc.) est précis et aussi facilement lisible. Mentionnons la possibilité d’y brancher les prises USB et celles d’Apple CarPlay et Android Auto. Hyundai propose également l’accessoire Driver Talk qui est un intercom intérieur. Il permet au conducteur de donner des instructions ou entretenir certaines conversations avec les autres passagers tout à l’arrière (ou disputer les enfants!) sans devoir s’époumoner pour parler car ses mots sortiront des haut-parleurs.

La console du centre n’est pas aussi grande que celle des pick-up par exemple ce qui amplifie l’impression d’y avoir beaucoup de place. Toutefois, la partie d’avant n’a pas le levier de vitesses habituel mais plutôt les boutons-pressoir pour les rapports de la boîte automatique. Et le conducteur peut aussi manier les rapports manuellement grâce aux palettes derrière le volant. De plus, toujours à la console, on retrouve la commande rotative qui laisse le conducteur choisir le type de motricité qu’il préfère incluant le mode Neige qui pourrait être utile au Québec. Vous comprendrez que je n’ai pu l’essayer…
Mon véhicule d’essai à sept passagers (il est à huit passagers avec les autres finitions) avait, en plus des deux sièges d’avant ajustables de diverses façons, deux sièges aussi ajustables au centre qui procurent un vaste débattement pour les jambes et une banquette arrière qui, ma foi, m’a paru un peu plus confortable que dans bien d’autres concurrents. La chaîne audio Harman/Cardon vaut la peine d’être mentionnée par sa qualité du son et le vaste toit ouvrant vitré est agréable durant les journées appropriées.

Évidemment, certains utilisateurs apprécieront l’espace de chargement du Palisade, un espace qui est un peu limité avec tous les dossiers en place (509 litres) mais qui devient de plus en plus utile (jusqu’à 2447 litres) lorsqu’on replie d’abord les dossiers du tout à l’arrière (les moteurs électriques sont, par contre, un peu lents à mon goût) puis ceux du centre. Le hayon arrière est à commande électrique.

Sur la route
Soyons francs, les VUS ou les VUM réguliers ne sont pas toujours les véhicules les plus amusants à conduire. Ils jouent bien leur rôle de «transporteurs» de personnes mais…Dans le cas du Palisade, c’est une toute autre histoire. Tout d’abord, mentionnons que les sièges (chauffés ou ventilés de l’Ultimate) ne sont pas que confortables. Ils offrent aussi un bon support. Puis, la position de conduite peut être des plus agréables. Incidemment, ce Hyundai avait l’affichage de la vitesse par réflexion dans le pare-brise, un élément que j’apprécie particulièrement et que je considère très sûr (tous les véhicules devraient en être équpés). La visibilité y est très bonne et la direction assistée par moteur électrique…reste une direction assistée avec peu de transmission des sensations de la route. Mais elle est quand même relativement stable et précise. Le moteur, on l’a dit, procure des performances respectables et la boîte de vitesses auto répond quand même bien aux variations de la route. Le régulateur de vitesse adaptatif est facilement adaptable aux exigences de tout conducteur alors que l’aide à la conduite n’est pas trop intrusive. Mais, je le répète, j’ai bien aimé les images des points morts des rétroviseurs dans le tableau de bord.
Évidemment, Hyundai a porté une attention spéciale au silence de roulement du Palisade et la suspension du véhicule est bien calibrée pour ses dimensions (en passant, les pneus du modèle Ultimate sont des Bridgestone Dueler P245/50 R20). Garer le véhicule dans un stationnement n’est pas toujours si facile vu son encombrement et la conduite en ville demande un peu plus d’attention mais ce n’est pas plus difficile qu’avec une grande berline.  
En ce qui a trait à la consommation, mon expérience au volant du Palisade s’est soldée par une moyenne de 12,84 l./100 km alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 11,0. C’est un peu le résultat auquel on s’attend avec un véhicule de ce genre et de ce gabarit. Le Hyundai Palisade de base (Essential), répétons-le, un prix de base de 38 499 $. Il y a une version Preferred et Luxury alors que le véhicule d’essai dont il est question ici est la version de luxe Ultimate dont le prix tourne de 53 999 $ plus les frais de transport et taxes habituelles.
Le Hyundai Palisade a un jumeau presque identique, le Kia Telluride avec lequel il partage sa plateforme et ses éléments mécaniques. Cependant, on me dit que «l’attitude» du Telluride fait plus «camion» que celle du Palisade (qui ferait plus «auto». C’est ce que j’aurai la chance de vérifier dans quelques semaines alors que j’aurai conduit le Kia…

Il s’agissait d’une adresse Youtube et sur cette vidéo, on voit les images en détail de MA vieille Lincoln Versailles 1977. Elle y est toujours, cette vidéo, et les commentaires (on ne peut plus élogieux) sont en anglais. Mais le cinéaste semble «capoter» sur ma voiture disant même que si elle était à vendre, il serait acheteur! Faut voir mais surtout entendre ce qui se dit dans la vidéo. SUV Review: 2019 Hyundai Tucson
For those looking for solid engineering without fancy wrapping, look no further than the Hyundai Tucson
Mid-cycle refresh of a popular compact crossover
While not abandoning its core car models, Hyundai, like many manufacturers, is expanding and updating its crossover portfolio — very aggressively, in the case of the South Korean company. Last year saw the addition of the youth-oriented Kona, while 2019 sees a new, fourth-generation Santa Fe, an electric version of the Kona, and later this year, a new flagship called the 2020 Palisade. Oh, and not to leave out its best-selling crossover in Canada — and second only to the Elantra in overall sales for 2018 — the third-generation Tucson from Group 1 Hyundai receives a mild refresh.
I’ve generally stuck to the theory that the fewer changes made to a vehicle during its life cycle, the better its original design and execution was, to begin with. And, in its fourth year, the Tucson’s makeover is fairly mild for a compact-sized crossover competing in a very strong, very crowded segment. Cosmetically, the Tucson gets a new cascading grille and daytime running LED headlights, along with a redesigned rear fascia including the tail lights, and new alloy wheels. A new shark-fin antenna is also standard. The rework complements the Tucson’s gracefully ageing looks.
Inside, alterations consist of a new centre stack design. On the features front, there’s standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus available Qi wireless charging and a second-row USB charger. Safety-wise, Hyundai adds forward collision-avoidance assist and a multi-view camera system to an already full list of things to keep the vehicle pointed in the proper direction and its occupants unharmed.
Actually, the biggest change for the 2019 model year is what won’t be found under the Tucson’s hood; Hyundai has dropped the troublesome — at least, according to Consumer Reports — 175-horsepower, 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder along with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, reducing powertrain options to two. The engines now offered consist of the base 2.0L direct-injected four-cylinder with 164 horsepower, and a more powerful, 181-horsepower 2.4L inline-four, both coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual shifting and overdrive lock-up torque converter.
There’s an honest simplicity to the Tucson, one that is very appealing. This should not be construed as labelling it old-fashioned or behind the curve, just straightforward, at least in the way it drives and handles. By dropping the turbo-four, the Tucson now relies on normally aspirated engines to power it, seemingly flying in the face of future convention. As well, its six-speed automatic is a couple of gears shy of what, again, is becoming normal for its segment — at least for the competitive set not fitted with CVTs.
And it matters not a whit. Driving the Tucson’s topline Ultimate trim level powered by the larger 2.4L engine is to experience an uncomplicated, get-in-it-and-go motoring experience. My week with the tester encompassed such diverse late-January weather conditions as arctic blasts, 10 millimetres of wet “heart attack” snow, rain, freezing rain and even a day of nothing but bright sunshine and dry roads.
The Tucson handled it all, thanks to its HTRAC all-wheel-drive system, tracking through slip and slop with unruffled purpose. Acceleration is not pulse-quickening, zero to 100 km/h taking about nine seconds, but the engine is moving just 1,645 kilograms — reasonably trim for a compact crossover — so the Tucson is well able to keep up with the flow of traffic. There are two selectable drive modes — Normal and Sport — the latter sharpening throttle response and steering effort, though the differences between the two modes are not all that extreme.
