OK, SO 2020
Welp.
I’m certain I won’t have to come back to this post to remember what happened this year. This year the world shared one similar experience; a year that seemed to have sat still while also continuously rampaging tragic events one after the other. A catalyst in many ways. It stands no reason that my year has not aligned with the rest of the world, yet we’ve managed to make it even more interesting. This year will be transcribed countless times, so let me focus on the parts in which are uniquely mine:
Despite the world falling to a pandemic, lock downs and quarantines for most of the year, it amazes yet how much I’ve squeezed out of this year. First and foremost: we did it. We moved to the west coast. A long time coming, some delays, some uncertainties. But we prepared, we agreed, we wanted something new. Clearly nothing stood in our way this year, we were going to go. As much as a curveball a pandemic can through at us, we were resilient and making the move. It’s not all positives, as settling here is a mix bag: unable to fully experience the city, me not quite sure how I like this position, Ashley not able to secure her next career opportunity, not able to even visit back home. But look, we made the move, we are here, let it not go to waste, as there are experiences still available and unique that we should not take for granted.
Let’s map out what happened this year:
January. The year started with a visit from the Cabacoys to Disney and SeaWorld. Shortly after, in the most gratifying way, I used up most of my vacation for the year in a single trip. We traveled to the California, a kind of sneak peek at what’s to come. Knowing our financial situation would be up in the air very soon, it was our best option as we’d see a variety of friends, family, places, all the while having lodging mostly covered. Although sick in the beginning (hmm? Nah just congestion) San Fran consisted of me watching the Witcher and eating Popeyes chicken sandwiches among other SF delights. The drive down Highway 1 was spectacular, this time not as foggy, giving us great views of the ocean all the way through. We were able to take the scenic Monterey coastal drive, passing through pebble beach and the like. Stopping at our favorite little hotel in San Luis Obispo, we find ourselves in LA the next day hanging out with the newlyweds. After the trip, January rounds out with a nice Disney breakfast with my family.
February started with a quick trip to Playa Linda, wearing ski jackets to the beach. Valentines/birthday weekend was the long-awaited Vigo cruise to the Bahamas. There’s something so satisfactory about a trip where I don’t anticipate anything, and everything comes at a delight and surprise. Next up we have G-Ading’s wedding, being the only wedding we end up going to this year! Very memorable time, and the food, oh my jeez it just kept coming. And last, on the final day of February (jk leap year), was my last day with JBT AeroTech. 8ish years would come to a close. The first place to give me a chance at becoming an Engineer and letting me not only prove to myself I could, but to give me opportunities to fulfill dreams bigger than my own.
March. Whoa now. This is a sensitive month for many people. And while many may mask as March entirely being pandemic, that part didn’t quite start until March 14. Let’s not forget what I managed to pull off before then. First off, Science Night Live in Orlando, something we’ve been wanting to do but finally was able to go. Second, Conexpo Las Vegas. I had an inkling that I would not be going with JBT this time, and so I booked it with my own money and still went. This expo is so cool for someone in the industry, there’s so many great vehicles to check out. Plus I figured it would be a good place to be to meet with connections and find Cali opportunities. Strapped for cash I secured shared accommodations and dinners provided my business acquaintances, but quickly evaporated as many attendees pulled out due to the growing pandemic (not locally yet, but this was an international expo). I managed to scrap together living spaces, and find alternative free meals. And while the people I was supposed to hang out with did not show up, I stuck with now old coworkers and even ended up finding new acquaintances there, which culminated to the most lux Vegas party I can imagine in penthouse suites (plural), a wild night I won’t forget.
And that’s double true, because the next day the lockdowns started to occur. I come back home to quarantine, lock down, uncertainty. One day I’m dancing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of people (which how lucky I didn’t catch anything then) to now not coming within 6 feet of anyone, stocking up on groceries and toilet paper. It was all so strange. We were afraid to hug my nephew, him being confused when he saw us, a confusing time of unknown. Initially I thought being out of work was going to be weird, maybe nice in some ways. And in a way it was; an unease of not having something to do, but all the while glad I didn’t have to work through this coping phase of the pandemic.
April was a weird time for me. What was supposed to be 2-week quarantine led to what we now know to be months. It still felt like more March, as nothing has progressed in the last weeks. Ask me now what happened and all I can remember is watering the grass everything, or waiting to water the grass every day. Nothing really else. Well, ok, maybe securing a job in Oakland (it really is about who you know), and slowly purging and moving out of our house. Towards the end of the month we went to Ocala to see Ashley’s parents once more, as it marked the start of our goodbyes.
May was wild and nonstop. While the world waited, we had to find a way to say goodbye to friends (heart breakingly distant), family, and our possessions. We had plans to seek out our favorite food spots and share final meals with people, but that was not possible. We made visits with family, while trying to figure out where to stash away the items we were not ready to give up on. I also said goodbye to my Miata. This car meant a lot to me, symbolized a lot, characterizes me in many ways. I always enjoyed driving it. And it if wasn’t raining, the top was down, and even sometimes when it was raining. It is a piece of me I had to let go. I have no regrets, I did not take it for granted, and I can only hope that I find another car that brings me as much joy each time.
And so, mid-May, we make the move. You can wait for the perfect moment, but as we see here there is no perfect moment, so my advice is this: now is probably the next best chance. We couldn’t wait any longer, and maybe regrets to go sooner can be argued, regrets of not going can be as well. And so we embarked on our journey to Oakland. I start my job to following week. It was a strange time as everything, and this time basically everything, was a strange new place to be. New city, new job, new world. But we did what we could. We have support here of friends and family, and we turned to them immediately. This month will start to shape the remainder of the year: food take out, video games, facetimes, picnics, cousins. We explored the Bay Area (by means to buying and selling Facebook marketplace items) just to get a feel of the surrounding areas and try to get our bearings.
June and July were much of the same. While Ashley took a trip back home, I stayed back, exploring the hills in a rental (more on that later). My Dad made a pitstop here as he finally managed a flight out of the Philippines. I had not seen him since December, and so much has happened since, so it was nice to see him just for a brief moment; because if not it would have been more than a year, because as I write this I have not seen him since. The rest of the months we try to explore various areas, including the Berkeley observatory, Golden Gate Park, Emeryville Marina, Ocean Beach.
August is much the same as you can expect, though we do see Ashley’s Cousins more, as well as my cousins and their daughters. Ashley hosts her birthday on our landlord’s porch, where we go through a makeshift game of “we are not really strangers,” a moving game much harder to play without the ability to hug at the end.
September picks up and gets more interesting as we start to explore further away from the city, including a nice relaxing day down at whale cove beach, as well as a relaxing vacation (away from the heat waves, smoke, and fires) down in Saratoga/Santa Cruz area.
October was another trip, this time all the way down to Paso Robles for a birthday celebration, exploring the vineyards and a bonus trip up highway 1. Although much different, it was nice to get a trip with a big group of friends. October we also saw a couple movies, including a private screening of Tenet (wut) and my first drive-in movie ever, Coco, and once more another drive-in for Hocus Pocus.
November was much of the usual, as we are limited in options (and a bit limited in finances) to try anything new. We made the very difficult choice not to travel back to Florida for thanksgiving, and instead spent thanksgiving with just the two of us, although we cooked for 8.
December is here, and we squeezed in a few interesting pieces. I took a drive out to some of the mountains towards San Jose in a newer Miata. Another weekend we spent in San Rafael, where we didn’t leave the hotel the entire time. A very welcoming weekend with no pressure, no rush, just stay in and play video games, watch movies, and eat in (room service and delivery to our door!). That was a nice weekend with the only expectation was that we were doing nothing. As Christmas approaches, we venture out into the city to look at some of the lights. We also manage the watch Elf at the drive-in (although the foggy night didn’t make that easy), and once more drive-in to see Wonder Woman 1984 before the new year.
Alright, quick tidbits:
Cars I’ve rented – BMW 330i, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Altima, Fiat Abarth 124, Jeep Wrangler, Mazda Miata. A nice plethora of cars this year, and with the availability of mountains in the west coast, and the convenience of Turo, I have the opportunity to take nice day long drives through the windy roads. This was one of my goals for moving and I’m glad I’m still able to put that into fruition. It’s convenient to have nice back roads so close, and the beautiful highway 1 coastal road for longer trips. It was nice to rent a couple convertibles, including a few similar to my Miata. I hope next year brings some more interesting cars, and hopefully some off-roading fun as well. It’s hard to pick a favorite, as each ride held a unique experience. But I am thinking about getting a Jeep so…
Best Thing I Ate – man there’s so much to consider. G-Ading’s wedding was crazy delicious, the best wedding food ever no question. Having a mini Hot Ones episode at Ashley’s parents and at Kevin’s was delicious and the conversation meaningful. I started my goodbye food tour but didn’t see it through, but that came with some favorites from Gators Dockside, Pho Vinh, Gold China, Vicky’s Bakery. As far as the West Coast: Farmhouse Thai’s Lao platter is tray full of little wonders. And here in the Bay Burmese is plentiful (something that should definitely make its way into Orlando). Let’s not forget a couple homemade treats, such as Mia’s delicious Ube cookies and smore bites, and Ashley’s brownie muffins she considers was a mess up (I think they were perfect).
Between the pandemic lockdown and my new Xbox, I’ve played quite a few notable games. My favorites this year include Nier Automata, Jedi Fallen Order, and The Outer Worlds. Breath of the Wild also has now become a comfort food/ re-watch staple this year in Cali.
A couple movies/TV to note watching: Before Sunrise, Columbus, Westworld season 3, Mandalorian Season 2, Dash & Lily.
There’s a lot that can be said about 2020. There were big expectations, and life comforts, which were all stripped from us. And so while we made a big leap into the unknown, the rest of the world follow suit. But it’s hard to say if it was a bad choice or good, because I really don’t know what would happen if we stayed in Florida. Maybe things were more familiar and grounded, maybe see family a bit more. But what jobs would we have? Would we have been at higher risk of getting Covid? Who knows. But what I do know is that right now we are fine. We are healthy, we are financially stable, our family is healthy. And we may be limited in the interactions we can have, but that does not mean we can’t enjoy some of what this west coast adventure had in store for us. I think it was important that we experience the change, chaotic as it was.
We purged ourselves of the past: got rid of old clothes, old furniture, old junk of our college and early adult years. We carry with us only the essentials, and have a new outlook on what we acquire along the way. May would see us move out of our home, be in limbo back in Miami, and even once we got to Oakland, we would move just 2 weeks later (and move out again 3 months later, and we’ll be moving again this January). This is a year of being unsettled, which was to be expected with the move, but add a global pandemic, marches for equality, an uncertain presidential election, nothing was the same, everything has changed.
But honestly, since many of life’s grievances are a shared collective, my year relatively was ok. Pre-Covid was fantastic and jam packed with family and trips, par for the course of what I deem important to me. And even during the pandemic, my comforts are driven by much of the same elements: friends, family, and trips, albeit a bit differently. I have hopes for next year, I really do. I don’t think things will go back to normal, and for us there is no normal here. But I think things will settle and be grounded, and we can look forward to more of things that make us whole and human. Things that may have been missing this year are the grander friends vacation trips, and the live concerts and museums. I also hope to see my family soon, and get back to a place of comfort and familiarity, even for a brief moment. I hope to see more of that next year. But all I can ask is that our health and wellbeing stay intact.
2020, you were a nightmare. But catalysts are never calm, and the outcome is sure to be filled with great energy.

Rear Seat Reminder Might Save Your Children and Pets: What Is It?
A parked car gets real hot, real fast. Interior air temperatures rise nearly 20 degrees in the first 10 minutes alone, according to findings by the Department of Geosciences at San Francisco State University.
That heat can be deadly and even great parents make simple mistakes. Statistics published by child safety advocates KidsAndCars.org report 53 children between the ages of two months and 13 years died as a result of vehicular heatstroke in the U.S. in 2019. With the rear seat reminder feature you’ve started to see on an increasing number of cars, automakers are taking a step to prevent such deaths.
What Is Rear Seat Reminder? How Does It Work?
Unlike the torque rating of a supercar or the kW-hr capacity of an EV, rear seat reminder systems are pretty self-explanatory. Although the same tech is labeled differently depending on the manufacturer, each system provides a message to the driver to check the rear seat if it determines that passengers may be present.
The primary method through which vehicles determine rear occupancy has to do with their doors. If a rear door is opened and closed before or after the car’s engine has been started, the vehicle’s computer knows to issue a rear seat reminder when the engine is turned off.
A system shared by Hyundai and Kia includes motion detection as a secondary means to determine whether passengers are in the rear seats. If, after issuing a reminder when the engine is powered off, the rear door is not opened and the car is locked, ultrasonic motion sensors begin scanning for movement.
When motion is detected, the vehicle will activate its horn for 25 seconds and will repeat that process up to eight times if motion continues. The vehicle will also send text and email messages to the owner(s) if they subscribe to Kia’s Uvo or Hyundai’s Blue Link telematic services.
Which Cars Have Rear Seat Reminders?
General Motors—composed of Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC—began fitting vehicles with its Rear Seat Reminder system for the 2017 model year. Starting with the 2018 model year, most vehicles across GM’s brands have included door-logic rear seat alert systems as standard.
Hyundai and Kia, the only automakers to utilize both motion detection and door logic, haven’t made the tech on as many vehicles, yet. Their system is branded Rear Occupant Alert.
In the Hyundai lineup, the Palisade, Santa Fe, and Sonata all feature a door logic system. Only the Santa Fe and Palisade offer motion detection, and it’s an optional extra. As for Kia, the new Telluride features motion detection and door logic as standard on all trims. The only other Kia to include the tech is the Seltos, which features standard door logic but no motion detection. It should be noted that Hyundai has pledged that Rear Occupant Alert will be standard on all its vehicles by 2022.
Nissan includes its Rear Door Alert as standard on nearly every model in its range, with the exception of the soon-to-be-replaced GT-R, two-seat 370Z, and Frontier pickup. It’s also featured on the Infiniti QX60 and QX80.
Toyota has only just started adding the feature to its cars and uses the same Rear Seat Reminder moniker as General Motors. It’s standard on the new Highlander. Subaru also uses the name Rear Seat Reminder, which it offers on 2020 versions of its Ascent, Forester, Crosstrek, and Impreza.
If you’re worried that the new car you have your eyes on doesn’t feature a rear seat reminder system, you won’t be worrying too long. Two groups, the Association of Global Automakers and the Alliance of Automobile manufacturers, encapsulate nearly every automaker that sells cars in the States. Both groups and the automakers therein have agreed that alert systems like these will be standard on every model by 2025.
Different Names For Rear Seat Reminder Systems
Rear Seat Reminder (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Subaru, Toyota)
Rear Occupant Alert (Hyundai, Kia)
Rear Door Alert (Nissan, Infiniti)

Today, day 59 of the year 2020
reminds me of the Oklahoma license plate number on my former Chevy Lumina [TYD 593] that i drove while working at Love envelopes, inc. in Tulsa from ‘04 to ‘06
and it also coincides with the reading of David’s Psalm 59 (i shared my daily reading of the Psalms and Proverbs earlier Today but had repeated Psalm 70 twice rather than posting the lines of Psalm 59, now added)
thank you for reading my heart and all of its letters. surely, some may oppose the way i’ve chosen to communicate, the way my heart calls to another in the silence of writing from the thought-life, yet i still continue to hope and “believe...” in making a clear connection in True illumination at some point.

Suspect in two Connecticut homicides arrested in Maryland
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WDVM) — A suspect in two homicides in Connecticut was taken into custody Wednesday night after six days on the run, according to police.
Peter Manfredonia was arrested in Hagerstown, Maryland, around 9 p.m., Maryland State Police said in a press release. Police said he was in a nearby wooded area when he walked out in front of authorities.
The Hagerstown Police Department said Wednesday evening that an Uber driver dropped Manfredonia, 23, off in Hagerstown on Tuesday, May 26. The first homicide was reported on Friday, May 22, The Associated Press reported.
Investigators followed Manfredonia through New Jersey to Pennsylvania to Maryland. He is being held in Washington County pending extradition back to Connecticut.
Manfredonia’s escape vehicle, a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe, was recovered in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. Trooper Petroski tweeted that Manfredonia took an Uber to Hagerstown from a Sheetz convenience store in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Maryland State Police said state troopers were in the Hagerstown area since noon on Wednesday after receiving the tip of Manfredonia’s potential whereabouts from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Manfredonia is accused of killing 62-year-old Ted DeMers with a machete on Friday. The Associated Press reported that Manfredonia then allegedly left to go to another man’s home and held him hostage. Manfredonia is accused of stealing the man’s guns and truck before driving to Derby, Connecticut.
Manfredonia is also accused of fatally shooting 23-year-old Nicholas Eisele, an old high school classmate. He then allegedly kidnapped Eisele’s girlfriend in her car and later left her at a rest stop in New Jersey on I-80, The Associated Press reported.
The Hagerstown Police Department said in a Wednesday press release prior to his arrest that Manfredonia was carrying a black bag filled with firearms. Police were urging residents to stay inside, keep their doors locked and call 911 immediately if they believe Manfredonia was seen.
Connecticut State Police tweeted after Manfredonia’s apprehension that there were no injuries to law enforcement when he was taken into custody.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review: Luxurious, Solid on Any Road Surface
2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit February 2020 Lime Kiln Road, Adirondacks
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is almost a decade old, and yet it’s currently the best-selling midsize SUV on the market: 242,969 sold last year, 200,000-plus most for much of the past two decades. The current body design has been around since 2011, there are 13 trim lines (model variants), multiple drivetrains, and varying levels of driver assistance technology.
Both despite its age and because of it – when the factory builds the same car year after year, reliability tends to improve – the Grand Cherokee has good fit and finish, a nicely controlled ride, a very nice interior on most trims, comfortable seats, and a solid infotainment system. Other than standard blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, driver-assist features are optional. The two rows of seats are both roomy, but no third-row seat is offered.
If one owner says their Grand Cherokee does fine off-road but the interior looks just okay and the center stack display is small, a second owner says it’s pretty luxe and the display is nice, and a third says the cockpit looks great and did you know it goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, that’s because, with those trim lines, there’s one that costs $33,000, a couple that run around $50,000-$60,000, and one that runs $88,000 with a 707-hp engine. (No, that’s not a typo.) You decide how much off-road capability, acceleration, and rear-seat entertainment you want, and you pay accordingly.
On the Road
I test drove the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. It is the premier Grand Cherokee for people who don’t feel the need to have a strong Dodge Viper flavor to their SUV, in which case there’s the performance-oriented Grand Cherokee V8 SRT and the high-performance Trackhawk. My test car totaled $62,775 with a four-wheel-drive system – not just all-wheel-drive – that added $3,000, a V8 engine that added $3,795, an eight-speed automatic, telematics, onboard Wi-Fi, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an AC socket and plenty of USB jacks, and a $1,995 rear entertainment system. At this point, you’re pushing into Audi-BMW-Mercedes territory.
My time in the Grand Cherokee Summit included a late-winter run into the New York State Adirondacks area around Lake Placid. A detour through hilly, rutted dirt roads covered with about eight inches of snow proved no problem at all.
The ride up and back into the northwoods, on interstate highways, was pleasurable, with a comfortable driving position, decent audio, and very little road noise. The Grand Cherokee Summit is plenty comfortable for four adults and a weekend’s worth of luggage. Even with cupholders front and back and bins in the doors, in-cabin storage for little items was lacking.
Good Navi, but Audio Could Be Better
The UConnect 4 infotainment system on my car was quite easy to use. But note that not all Grand Cherokees get UConnect 4 and 8-inch center stack screens. For years, Chrysler-Dodge-Ram products have had very good navigation and infotainment. It doesn’t hurt that when you press the NAV button, the screen asks you, “Where to?” The only people who don’t get that are grade-school teachers looking for a verb and a complete sentence.
This was the first Harman Kardon premium audio system I’ve driven that wasn’t breathtaking. It had 19 speakers and the issue – to me – was the woofer in the driver’s kick panel area. It was so heavily boosted that with the volume up and listening to my workout playlist (you know: the songs you’re too embarrassed to share), the sound pressure made my pant legs flap. So much so it felt like a Rockford Fosgate system, a brand happy to be known for heavy – sorry, deep – bass. It was much improved by turning the bass setting below the midpoint.
Not Enough Driver Assists
The advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are not all state-of-the-art and too many are extra-cost. Nothing wrong with blind-spot detection (standard) or lane keep assist (included on some trim lines). The optional ParkSense backup system auto-stops the car if you get too close to a stopped object. That’s all good. Adaptive cruise control goes down to zero but you have to manually resume forward travel, and if you’re stopped more than three seconds, ACC disengages.
Forward collision warning, a technology that requires a low-cost front-facing camera, is optional. Of the 18 midsize, two-row SUVs on the market, the only non-Jeep product lacking FCW is the revived Chevrolet Blazer, which, despite its heritage, is not a hard-core off-roader. Automatic emergency braking for highway and for city situations are also optional, and pedestrian AEB is not offered.
My Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4 was rated at 14 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 17 mpg overall. I averaged 20 mpg in a week of primarily highway driving.
So Many Models to Choose From
The 2020 Grand Cherokee comes in a dazzling array of trim lines, or model variants. Currently, there are 13. These prices include $1,495 shipping.
Laredo, $33,735 rear drive / $35,735 four-wheel drive Laredo E, $35,390 / $37,390 Upland, $37,685 / $39,685 Altitude, $39,830 / $41,830 North Edition, $40,285 4WD standard Limited, $41,545 / $43,545 Limited X, $46,640 / $48,640 Trailhawk $46,645 4WD standard Overland, $47,985 / $50,985 High Altitude, $50,730 / $53,730 Summit, $54,085 / $57,085 SRT, $70,085 4WD standard Trackhawk, $88,590 4WD standard
It’s hard to describe each model other than to note the Laredo E is a nicer Laredo, not a hybrid; North Edition and Trailhawk target wintry off-roading and off-roading; and SRT and Trackhawk are high-performance SUVs that also go off-road and tow boats.
Should You Buy?
The Grand Cherokee is the best of the seven Jeep models you can buy in terms of modern-day amenities and reliability without sacrificing heavy snow / off-road driving. It’s also the best-selling, with 26 percent of Jeep’s 923,2981 2019 sales. By our count, there are nearly 25 midsize, mainstream-price SUVs, and almost as many premium midsize SUVs. The top sellers, mainstream or premium, are:
SUV 2019 Sales Change Jeep Grand Cherokee 242,969 +8% Toyota Highlander 239,437 -2% Jeep Wrangler 228,042 -5% Ford Explorer 187,061 -28% Subaru Outback 181,178 +1%
(Note: The big falloff for the Ford Explorer came in the wake of quality-control problems while getting the sixth-generation Explorer and the sibling Lincoln Aviator into production at Ford’s Chicago assembly plant.)
The Jeep Cherokee is not an entry edition of the Grand Cherokee but a separate model eight inches shorter than Grand Cherokee’s 190 inches, with a base four-cylinder engine and not quite as refined.
The Grand Cherokee is your best choice among midsize SUVs if you want an one that goes off-road, not just negotiate a lightly plowed gravel road near the ski slope, and does it with a reasonable amount of passenger comfort. As a bonus, some Grand Cherokees can tow up to 7,200 pounds; the rest tow at least 3,500 pounds. If you have little kids (two), the dual rear entertainment system may be worth the healthy price. The V6 engines are good and the V8s are better but gas mileage suffers.
The mainstream trim lines fare well against the Chevrolet Blazer and Ford Edge. The roomier, longer, three-row Ford Explorer is also a competitor for those who value towing capacity. The Toyota 4Runner is very good off-road but not as smooth otherwise. If you want a competent all-around vehicle, look also at the Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Hyundai Santa Fe. The Dodge Durango is a cousin to the Grand Cherokee, is longer, and has three rows of seats, but isn’t as skilled off-roading.
The Grand Cherokee upper trim lines compete nicely against premium brands. But it’s hard to match the NVH and highway manners of say, a BMW X5, when you go into battle in a design released the same year Ke$ha debuted We R Who We R.
Other top midsize SUVs don’t map to Grand Cherokee’s off-roader ethic. The Lexus RX is all-around excellent but is not what you want going off-road or hauling a trailer. The Mazda CX-9 is the sportiest and most fun to drive, but without the cargo capacity.
Jeep’s other sales advantage is that Grand Cherokee buyers are predisposed toward USA vehicles. According to JD Power research, 76 percent of Grand Cherokee owners say they prefer buying from a domestic company versus 58 percent for the midsize SUV segment as a whole. That means Grand Cherokee owners may not cross-shop the sporty Korean-flagged Kia Telluride (three rows but still midsize), even it’s built in Alabama, and the similar Hyundai Palisade. The Grand Cherokee would win on off-road driving. But in other areas, Kia and Hyundai are extremely competitive, particularly NVH and driver assists.
A new Grand Cherokee should be introduced this year as a 2021 model. Given how well Jeep has done to keep the fourth-generation model competitive, the new model should be impressive.

12 SUVs With Surround View Camera Systems for Under $40,000
Getting useful technology in your SUV once required spending a lot of money because certain features were limited to the priciest models in an automaker’s lineup. With technology eventually trickling down to smaller SUVs and becoming an important selling point on all models regardless of size, it was only a matter of time until features like the surround view camera became available on affordable SUVs. Here are 12 SUVs with surround view cameras for under $40,000.
2020 Volkswagen Tiguan — $39,815
Currently one of the best-selling models in Volkswagen’s lineup, the Tiguan offers plenty of tech features, especially on the range-topping SEL Premium R-Line grade. That trim is the only way to get the SUV with a 360-degree camera, which should help ease maneuvering into tight spaces. Every other trim comes with a simpler rearview camera.
2020 Mazda CX-5 –$38,100
With its move toward a premium direction, the Mazda CX-5 was one of the first to join the list of compact SUVs with 360-degree cameras. Like many of its competitors, the feature is only available on the range-topping trim, the CX-5 Signature, where it comes as standard along with Nappa leather upholstery and real wood trim.
2020 Chevrolet Equinox — $36,945
The Chevrolet Equinox offers plenty of equipment in the range-topping Premier grade. With the optional Confidence & Convenience II package, the Equinox is just one of a number of mainstream compact SUVs with a surround view camera. The best part is that you can get the package regardless of the engine choice, as long as you get the Equinox Premier.
2020 Toyota RAV4 — $36,525
Now the most popular model in Toyota’s lineup, the RAV4 offers a wide range of variants including a hybrid and more capable Adventure and TRD Off-Road variants. Should you want the SUV with a 360-degree camera, you’ll need to move up to at least the Limited trim and opt for the Advanced Technology package.
2020 Hyundai Santa Fe — $36,745
The middle child of the Hyundai SUV family, the Santa Fe, offers space and flexibility together with seating for up to five passengers. In order to get the SUV with a 360-degree camera system, however, you need to move up to the range-topping Limited trim regardless of the engine choice.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class — $36,050
Mercedes’ smallest SUV, the GLA-Class, offers city-friendly dimensions and added ride height for a commanding view of the road. It’s also one of the few subcompact SUVs with a surround view camera available. However, in order to get it, you must opt for the Parking Assistance package, which also requires you to get the Convenience package.
2020 Mitsubishi Outlander — $31,525
One way the Mitsubishi Outlander distinguishes itself from the pack is the availability of a five-seat plug-in hybrid variant with Level 3 fast charging capability. In its gas-only guise, the Outlander can seat up to seven regardless of the engine choice. You can get the SUV with a surround view camera on the SEL model if you opt for the SEL Touring package, or on the range-topping GT grade as standard equipment.
2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross — $30,525
Mitsubishi’s latest model, the Eclipse Cross, may have a polarizing exterior, but it’s also one of only a handful of affordable SUVs with a surround view camera available. The catch? It’s only offered on the range-topping SEL trim, and you have to opt for the $2,100 Touring package to get it.
2020 Hyundai Tucson — $30,145
Recently refreshed, the Hyundai Tucson received a significant upgrade with additional driver assist features including adaptive cruise control and driver attention warning. It’s also now one of a growing number of compact SUVs with a surround view camera. This feature is standard on the Limited and Ultimate grades.
2020 Nissan Rogue — $29,615
One of the most popular SUVs currently on sale, the Nissan Rogue is the Japanese brand’s best-seller and has helpful driver assist features such as ProPilot Assist. You can get the SUV with a surround view camera starting from the SV trim if you opt for the Premium or Sun and Sound Touring packages. Like on other top-end trims of other Nissan vehicles, the Rogue SL gets a surround view camera standard.
2020 Nissan Rogue Sport — $28,425
Slotting below the standard Rogue is the smaller Nissan Rogue Sport, which recently received a refresh. Unlike the even-smaller Kicks, the Rogue Sport is available with all-wheel drive and is one of a small number of subcompact SUVs with a surround view camera. It’s available on the mid-level SV grade if you opt for the SV Technology package, and the range-topping SL gets the 360-degree camera as standard.
2020 Nissan Kicks — $22,015
The least expensive way to get an SUV with a 360-degree camera is by getting the Nissan Kicks. The range-topping SR trim has it, and with a price tag under $23,000. Even when you add the premium package and two-tone exterior colors, the subcompact SUV still checks in well below the $25,000 mark, making it a strong value proposition for those wanting a practical daily driver with a small footprint.
12 SUVs With Surround View Cameras for Under $40,000
2020 Volkswagen Tiguan
2020 Mazda CX-5
2020 Chevrolet Equinox
2020 Toyota RAV4
2020 Hyundai Santa Fe
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class
2020 Mitsubishi Outlander
2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross
2020 Hyundai Tucson
2020 Nissan Rogue
2020 Nissan Rogue Sport
2020 Nissan Kicks

Comma.ai launches Comma Two, a $999 kit that imbues cars with assisted driving features
Two years ago, analysts predicted that upwards of 10 million self-driving cars would hit the road by 2020. They weren’t the only ones — in 2015 and 2016, respectively, The Guardian and Business Insider proclaimed that people would become “permanent backseat driver[s],” riding in fully autonomous cars from 2020 “without needing any interaction from [drivers].”
Fast forward to today. Despite assurances that as many as 8 million driverless cars will be added to the road in 2025, even operations like that of Alphabet’s Waymo have yet to expand beyond selected metros. The reasons are regulatory as well as technological in nature, but expense plays a role. Conservative estimates peg the cost of outfitting cars at between $100,000 to 250,000 per car.
So why not go the do-it-yourself route? That’s the question George Hotz posed five years ago — he’s the American hacker best known for developing exploits that targeted Apple’s iOS operating system and reverse-engineering Sony’s PlayStation 3. In September 2015, Hotz founded Comma.ai with the goal of developing a semi-automated system — OpenPilot — that would improve cars’ visual perception and electromechanical motor control. Unlike most full-stack solutions in testing, it’s intended to replace OEM advanced driver-assistance systems, effectively imbuing cars with self-driving capabilities.
For the first time in its history, Comma.ai has an official presence at the Consumer Electronics Show. The company this week invited members of the press (including VentureBeat) to test-drive the latest version of its system — and to show off the Comma Two.
OpenPilot
OpenPilot’s development had a bit of a rocky start. The first version’s reveal in a Bloomberg article and video prompted a cease-and-desist letter from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which accused Comma.ai of testing a self-driving car in the state without a license. Subsequently, OpenPilot was packaged into a shippable device dubbed the Comma One, which again ran afoul of the authorities because of noncompliance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Under pressure from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, Comma One was canceled, and Comma.ai open-sourced OpenPilot on GitHub.
Much has changed. In the roughly three years since Comma.ai made OpenPilot available to the public, over 1,500 users have racked up more than 14 million autonomous miles collectively, half of which were driven autonomously. (That’s up from 10 million miles as of May 2019.) Moreover, they’ve forked the GitHub repository over 2,300 times, adding features like automatic lane change and support for older Tesla, Chrysler, and Jeep models.
Comma Two
Comma.ai previously sold the Eon Devkit, a self-contained and windshield-mounted modified OnePlus phone. It started at $599, and once OpenPilot was installed to it, it automatically recognized car models by analyzing CAN network traffic. (The presence of certain CAN messages and their lengths is an indication of the model year, car brand, car model, and trim.) Companion devices dubbed the Panda and Giraffe plugged into cars’ OBD-II ports to track RPMs, MPG, cornering G-force, battery life, and more, and to provide access to the communication buses and enable the Eon to interface with the car.
The Comma Two replaces the Eon, but it retains all of the Eon’s features and then some. That said, it ditches the Panda for a single-cord solution, and it’s slightly pricier at $1,000 (though it’s available on a payment plan through Affirm).
The first batch of 300 units are available for purchase today. They’ll begin shipping later in the month, Hotz says.
The Comma Two is powered via OBD-C as opposed to by battery, which Hotz says was a top complaint among current Eon owners, and it has a larger mount as well as a custom fan-based hardware cooling solution. Like the Eon, which used a camera to recognize drivers’ faces and decelerate if it detected those drivers were distracted, the Comma Two performs facial recognition. In point of fact, it’s in improved in that it leverages two infrared sensors as opposed to an RGB sensor, enabling it to work during nighttime.
Other highlights include front and back cameras, as well as a fourth CAN bus to connect the OBD-II port and a low-power mode that automatically shuts off the Comma Two after three days to save car battery.
The Eon was equipped with cellular service and a SIM card supplied by Comma.ai. Data was unlimited (though capped to 512Kbps), and users could spring for Comma Prime if they so chose, a $24 per month service that enables remote access (via T-Mobile) from anywhere and online storage of 14 days’ worth of drive data (compared with the standard three days). The Comma Two also taps cellular for connectivity and plays nicely with new and existing Comma Prime subscriptions, and it comes with a year’s worth of storage.
By default, OpenPilot uploads driving data in real time from the road-facing camera, CAN, GPS, inertial measurement unit, magnetometer, thermal sensors, and operating system to Comma.ai’s servers for machine learning training and development purposes. Much of this data can be accessed locally through the Comma Connect app for iOS and Android or through Explorer, an online dashboard of recent drives from which disengagements (i.e., instances when a driver took control from OpenPilot) can be annotated to help improve the system.
From within the app, Comma Two owners can remotely wake up the Comma Two and snap a picture from either the front- or rear-facing cameras. Additionally, they’re able to switch among multiple units on the fly and to view their real-time geographic locations.
Compatibility
OpenPilot isn’t compatible with every car under the sun. It only works with these models and model years:
Acura ILX (2016-2018) and RDX (2016-2018)
Buick Regal (2018)
Chevrolet Malibu (2017)
Volt (2017-2018)
Cadillac ATS (2018) and Pacifica (2017-2018)
GMC Acadia Denali (2018)
Holden Astra (2018)
Honda Accord (2016-2019), Civic (2017-2019), Civic Hatchback (2017-2019), CR-V (2015-2019), CR-V Hybrid (2017-2019), Fit (2018), Odyssey (2018-2019), Passport (2019), Pilot (2016-2019), and Ridgeline (2017-2019)
Hyundai Elantra (2017-2019), Genesis (2018), and Santa Fe (2019)
Jeep Grand Cherokee (2016-2019)
Kia Optima (2019), Sorento (2018), and Stinger (2018)
Lexus RX Hybrid (2016-2019) and ES Hybrid (2019)
Subaru Crosstek (2018) and Impreza (2019)
Toyota Avalon (2016-2018), Camry (2018-2019), C-HR (2017-2019), Corolla (2017-2020), Corolla Hatchback (2019), Highlander (2017-2018), Highlander Hybrid (2018), Prius (2017-2019), Prius Prime (2017-2020), Rav4 (2016-2019), Rav4 Hybrid (2017-2018), and Sienna (2018)
Equally critically, OpenPilot isn’t capable of fully autonomous driving on all road types in all conditions. It can currently handle lane centering on roads without clear marking thanks to machine learning algorithms trained with user data, and it can maintain a safe follow distance and drive in stop-and-go traffic without supervision.
But it’s complicated. On all supported cars, OpenPilot’s automated lane centering and lane keep assist replace the stock systems. Only on specific supported cars does the system’s adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning slot in for default, however, and on no model does OpenPilot take over things like auto high-beam, blind spot warning, and side collision warning.
Driving experience
So how’s the driving experience with the Comma Two? “Smooth sailing” sums it up. OpenPilot indeed maintains its lane position even when the markings aren’t obvious — or aren’t visible. In a construction site with cones on either side and on an unpaved road without dividing lines, we watched OpenPilot deftly keep centered and maintain a comfortable following distance from the car in front of it.
It doesn’t much matter whether the road ahead is straight or severely curved. OpenPilot used to scrape OpenStreetMap for road curvature and traffic data, but it doesn’t any longer — now, it’s smart enough to calculate the trajectory in real time and to ensure it doesn’t speed along that trajectory too violently.
In this respect, OpenPilot is akin to Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, Volvo’s Pilot Assist, and GM’s Super Cruise, the last of which is one of the few systems that offers hands-free driving thanks to an eye-monitoring infrared camera. But in contrast to Super Cruise, which only engages on about 130,000 miles of U.S. and Canadian highway that GM has mapped, OpenPilot theoretically works anywhere there’s a discernible road.
OpenPilot can change lanes automatically, but it requires signaling from drivers before it does so — they have to first switch on a turn signal and nudge the steering wheel in the direction they’d like to go. It smoothly merging while keeping pace with the traffic ahead in our brief experience. But Hotz noted that OpenPilot won’t prevent lane changes when cars are to the immediate left or right, in the Comma Two’s blind spot.
Of course, Comma Two and OpenPilot can’t anticipate every situation. An SUV rear-ended a hatchback during our driving demo, forcing Hotz — who was behind the wheel — to tap the brake and disengage the system. And OpenPilot doesn’t handle things like red lights or stop signs — at least not yet.
Safety
Whether OpenPilot can be considered truly safe is a semantics question, in part. The driverless car industry lacks an agreed-upon metric for safety — Noah Zych, head of system safety at Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, told Wired in an interview that miles traveled isn’t a particularly insightful measure without context like location. Derek Kan, U.S. secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, echoed that sentiment in remarks at a conference two years ago.
Companies like Intel’s Mobileye and Nvidia have proposed mathematical models that aim to codify good habits like giving other cars the right of way. Essentially, they’re decision-making policies in a motion-planning stack that monitor unsafe actions by analyzing real-time sensor data.
Comma.ai has a safety model of its own, which Hotz said involves several forms of regression testing. Commits aren’t merged to the OpenPilot codebase before they’ve met the test suite’s muster.
This aside, Comma.ai problematically hasn’t committed to regularly publishing any sort of statistics beyond miles driven, like disengagements or accidents. California’s Department of Motor Vehicles mandates that all companies testing autonomous cars report disengagements, but because Comma.ai doesn’t have a permit to test cars, it’s exempt from this requirement.
Hotz for his part asserts that the infrared sensors in Comma Two will improve safety substantially, as will the onboarding video customers are required to watch before they launch OpenPilot for the first time. On the subject of the former, a warning appears on the Comma Two’s screen if a driver diverts their eyes from the road for four seconds, and after six seconds, OpenPilot disengages and begins to slow down. (Unclicking the driver-side seat belt or opening the car door also disengages the system.)
For what it’s worth, we encountered only one disengagement — Hotz’s stop to avoid the accident — over roughly 7 miles and 25 minutes of driving  “We pushed on nuance [with this latest version of OpenPilot],” said Hotz. “Intersections have no lane lines — it’s unclear where you should go. [OpenPilot] follows the path that the human would follow.”
Backend improvements
On the backend side of the OpenPilot equation, new is a simulation environment called the Small Offset Simulator that loads in real-world routes and simulates deviations of them. “You can’t just take a lot of data and train a model to mimic the data, because that model doesn’t realize that if it takes action, the world will change,” said Hotz. “The only way to really do that is to build a simulator.”
Using a technique called projected geometry and generative adversarial networks (GANs), or two-part AI models comprising generators that synthesize data samples and discriminators that attempt to distinguish between the synthesized samples and real data, the simulator redraws scenes meters to the left or right or with curvature and other perturbations. Hotz said that the models within the Small Offset Simulator are now training on 200,000 minutes of driving data collected by Eon users.
It’s similar — but not quite the same — as the simulation environments deployed internally by Uber, Waymo, and others. GM’s Cruise, for instance, leverages a replay approach that involves extracting real-world sensor data, playing it back against the car’s software, and comparing the performance with human-labeled ground truth data. Cruise also engages in planning simulation, which lets the company’s data scientists create up to hundreds of thousands of variations of a scenario by tweaking variables like the speed of oncoming cars and the space between them.
Future developments
Going forward, Comma.ai plans to release new hardware on roughly a yearly cadence — Hotz believes its business model of selling devices at profit and eating the cost of software development is sustainable. (Comma.ai has raised $8.1 million in venture capital to date across two funding rounds, the most recent of which closed in April 2018.) As for OpenPilot, achieving a better end-to-end driving experience remains an acute area of focus for the engineering team.
“What we want to do is move away from [lead car following] and move to an end-to-end longitudinal [model],” he said. “One of the problems we as a company have trying to convey is, when it works well, you don’t even notice it. Our company mission is to solve self-driving cars while shipping intermediaries.”
But Comma.ai isn’t discouraging rivals from cloning its hardware and piggybacking off of OpenPilot. In fact, Hotz encourages it, just as he encourages those with proprietary solutions to compete with Comma.ai.
One such challenger — former Yahoo CTO John Hayes’ Ghost Locomotion — emerged from stealth last November promising an aftermarket self-driving kit to retrofit existing cars. Another — Cambridge, U.K.-based Wayve — claims its driverless cars self-improve by learning from safety driver interventions. Mobileye doesn’t sell a consumer product, but like Comma.ai, its driverless tech leans on cameras for autonomous decision-making. And then there’s Tesla, which recently release a preview of an active guidance system (Navigate on Autopilot) that navigates a car from a highway on-ramp to off-ramp, including interchanges and making lane changes.
Hotz is unconcerned. “Mobileye is the Windows [of autonomous driving] that’s going to do Microsoft-style business development deals with big companies, Tesla’s the Mac that’s going to ship sexy hardware to consumers, and we’re the Linux,” he said. “Everybody should use us for whatever they want.”

Everything You Need To Know About Cars From Toyota | cars from toyota
The 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show was a acceptable one, with added new cars, trucks and SUVs than one could calmly agitate a stick at. While auto shows generally tend to end up absorption on a distinct agent chic — anticipate SUVs at the Chicago Auto Actualization or exotics at Geneva — the LA actualization didn’t assume to this year. But, as we abstruse from Seinfeld, article defective a axial focus can still be awful entertaining. With debuts alignment from the awful advancing Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator auto to the abutting Kia Soul, Mazda3, Porsche 911 and all-new Hyundai Palisade SUV, Roadshow’s agents begin themselves ambrosial active putting their butts in all the new seats.
Here’s our assembly of the best important debuts so that you’ll apperceive what to attending out for if you acquisition yourself in LA or if you acquisition yourself arcade for a new ride in a few months. For alike added abundant look, be abiding to appointment our 2018 Los Angeles Auto Actualization landing folio — it’s a acceptable way to admission all the all-embracing advantage of all the alone models that we looked at this week.
The Audi E-Tron GT is still a abstraction car — and angelic hell is it a adorable one — admitting it will advance to a abounding assembly archetypal that launches in backward 2020. Its powertrain technology is carefully accompanying to that in the forthcoming Porsche Taycan, and that’s a acceptable thing. The key specs that you allegation to know: It’s got a 90-kWh array backpack giving it a 248-mile range, as able-bodied as 590 absolute arrangement application and a 0-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. The E-Tron GT will advice Audi get against its ambition of affairs 20 electrified models by 2025, and if added of them attending like this, again we’re all for it.
We already adulation the new Bentley Continental GT, and now there’s a aces convertible adaptation that can do 207 afar per hour. The top, which Bentley says keeps the berth 3 decibels quieter than in the old Conti GT convertible, can accessible or abutting in aloof 19 abnormal back traveling at speeds up to 30 mph. Beneath the awning is a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, acceptable for 626 application and 664 pound-feet of torque. The convertible is 375 pounds added than the coupe, but will still get to 60 mph in aloof 3.7 seconds. The new Conti GT fabricated its admission in Los Angeles during the anniversary of the show, but strangely, was not at the actualization itself.
BMW debuted its little affection out with a abounding calendar of hot new luxo-missiles, the best important of which is the M340i xDrive. BMW gave us a glimpse of the 330i at the Geneva Motor Show, and our man Steven Ewing got a adventitious to get abaft the caster of the new G20-generation 330i at the Nurburgring. This LA admission showed us the best advancing adaptation (so far) of the abutting 3 Series, which will accomplish 369 application from its turbocharged straight-six. After seeing it in the metal, we can affirm that it’s abundant added absorbing in person, with its added advancing exoteric and interior.
BMW additionally had the new 8 Series Convertible on duke forth with the Vision iNext concept (which still looks like a dye backpack exploded inside) and its full-size, three-row X7 SUV, which you can apprehend added about here.
Fiat’s subcompact 500X crossover SUV has been on auction in North America back 2016, but it hasn’t absolutely bent blaze with consumers (maybe it would if it looked added like the Multipla from the backward 1990s and aboriginal 2000s). For 2019, a active archetypal debuts with hardly altered looks, a new engine, accepted all-wheel drive and a abundantly simplified archetypal range.
Slight downsizing has occurred in the agent bay, area the 1.4-liter turbocharged agent or 2.4-liter artlessly aspirated agent has been replaced with a distinct 1.3-liter turbo unit. Admitting the admeasurement reduction, the new agent absolutely produces a lot added torque than its predecessors: 210 pound-feet (versus 184 pound-feet in the 1.4-liter or 175 in the 2.4-liter). That should accomplish it feel sprightlier than aftermost year’s model, admitting the actuality that application charcoal bashful at 177.
For 2019, the six-speed chiral chiral has been nixed, acceptation it’s nine-speed automated or nothing. Front-wheel-drive configurations accept additionally been discontinued.

Honda’s Passport asleep in 2002, but the nameplate has been adored (with 100 percent below Isuzu) as a two-row, five-passenger crossover that slots in sizewise amid the CR-V and the Pilot, admitting it’s congenital on the aforementioned Honda Global Light Barter belvedere acclimated for the Pilot and Ridgeline. The Honda Passport will barrage aboriginal abutting year with rugged-adjacent looks and a 3.5-liter V6 agent churning out 280 application and 262 pound-feet of torque. It’ll be able to tow as abundant as 5,000 pounds if optioned correctly, and Honda will action all address of roof-mounted racks and accessories.
Honda sees the Passport aggressive with the cast of the Nissan Murano and revitalized Ford Edge, admitting Honda’s access does assume a little added asperous than those entries.
This year Hyundai debuted the 2020 Palisade, a new three-row, midsize crossover, and gave the aboriginal one to a brace who adopted four orphaned siblings. This isn’t Hyundai’s aboriginal able at a three-row SUV — you may anamnesis that the brief Veracruz fit that bill, followed by the added acknowledged three-row Santa Fe and its afresh renamed twin, the Santa Fe XL — but it does assume like an adorable and advised option.
Hyundai afresh told Roadshow that the midsize SUV articulation moves about 1.5 actor units per year in North America, so it will be absorbing to see how abounding of those sales the Palisade will abduction back it hits dealers abutting summer.
If this year’s LA Auto Actualization was about one thing, it was the 2020 Gladiator pickup truck. Jeep hasn’t offered a auto barter in its calendar back the Cherokee-based MJ Comanche auto of the backward ’80s and aboriginal ’90s and if the internet’s acknowledgment to it is any affectionate of barometer, it’s activity to be a hit.
While it’s accessible to address off the Gladiator as aloof a Wrangler with a auto bed, there are a agglomeration of differences. For instance, it’s got a altered five-link rear abeyance bureaucracy and can tow abundant added than the accepted Wrangler, a segment-best 7,650 pounds and a burden of up to 1,600 pounds. A 3.6-liter V6 agent is standard, but we apperceive that a turbodiesel will be offered at a after date. Don’t authority your animation for the turbo four-cylinder version.
Other Wrangler-derived conveniences and capabilities alteration to the Gladiator, such as the folding windshield with accessible disposable hardtops and a folding bendable top, added the adeptness to ford 30 inches of baptize back you accept the boxy Rubicon model. Mopar additionally showed off a ton of alarming accessories that will advice accomplish your Gladiator altered on the trail.

Kia additionally alien the 2020 Soul EV, which has a 64-kWh array backpack that should crop a active ambit of at atomic 200 miles, admitting we’re still cat-and-mouse on an exact number. Speaking of electric Kias, there’s additionally a new Niro EV. Like the Soul EV, it has a 64-kWh array backpack and a motor rated for 201 horsepower; Kia says it will acknowledgment 239 afar of ambit on a distinct charge. The Toyota Land Cruiser-based Lexus LX 570 is old, admitting it has accustomed three face-lifts over the accomplished 11 years. Rather than bringing a redesign to the LA Auto Show, Lexus is aloof showed off the 2019 LX with a new actualization amalgamation alleged the Inspiration Series. In a nutshell, you’re ambidextrous with an accustomed LX 570, but “murdered out” as the kids say, with blacked-out 21-inch auto and a atramentous grille, forth with several added aphotic $.25 to peg the adverse meters. The Inspiration Series additionally pegs the amount alarms with its $100,420 MSRP, but that’s due to a lot of bundled-in alternative features.
Only 500 units of the LX Inspiration Series will be made, so abode your orders now. While you’re at it, you can apprentice added about this appropriate SUV here.
First apparent in abstraction anatomy this accomplished March at the New York International Auto Show, the Lincoln Aviator was the belle of the brawl with its head-turning looks and cutting-edge features. Now the assembly 2020 Aviator has been absolutely revealed, with three rows of seating, abandoned architecture and two powertrain options.
Buyers can aces amid a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 agent with 400 application and 400 pound-feet of torque, with either rear- or all-wheel drive. A constituent amalgam advantage is rated for 450 application and 600 pound-feet, admitting Lincoln hasn’t yet offered any capacity on electric active ambit or efficiency. Added comfortable and high-tech actualization accommodate the adeptness to use your smartphone as the car’s “key,” a four-corner air abeyance that uses a camera to “read” the alley and acknowledge to bumps proactively, a 28-speaker Revel audio arrangement and Lincoln’s CoPilot360 Added active-safety suite. The actuality that Lincoln acclimated the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the Aviator’s admonishing tones additionally absolutely resonates with our abutting car nerds.
The fourth-generation 2019 Mazda3 is now here, with both auto and auto versions that chase the administration accent previewed by the Mazda Kai concept shown at aftermost year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The new car will go on auction in aboriginal 2019.
There are lots of changes below the surface, too. The Mazda3 abject agent will still be a 2.5-liter inline-four, with either chiral or automated transmissions with six speeds. The 3 is additionally the aboriginal assembly Mazda to use the company’s Skyactiv-X compression-ignition engine, which uses a supercharger and a mild-hybrid motor assist. As if that’s not enough, the Mazda3 additionally boasts an upgraded 8.8-inch infotainment arrangement and an bittersweet eye-tracking Disciplinarian Monitoring Arrangement that can acquaint if the disciplinarian is adorable abroad from the road.

There’s no ability increase, with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 still putting out 577 application and 516 pound-feet of torque, but the GT R Pro allowances from a revised coilover suspension, adjustable anti-roll bars, carbon-ceramic brakes and retuned activating agent mounts. It additionally adds the AMG Dynamics adherence ascendancy system, which has Basic, Advanced, Pro and Master modes.
Along with the Pro, of course, AMG has adapted all versions of the GT auto and convertibles with tweaks like restyled headlights, a new rear diffuser, a absolutely agenda apparatus array and some added autogenous switchgear changes. Oh, and those vents on top of the fenders are absolutely authoritative the Roadshow agents swoon.
Ever back the aboriginal Mini accustomed in 1959, the cast has been no drifter to appropriate editions. Yet accession one will accomplish its North American premiere at the 2019 LA Auto Show. The Mini John Cooper Works Knights Edition takes a boilerplate John Cooper Works Hardtop and drizzles it with a atramentous and argent shining-armor theme.

Southern California has continued been Porsche’s best important market, so it’s alone applicable that the sports car maker would accept LA to bare the abutting bearing of its best acclaimed model, the 911. The 2020 911 debuted in Carrera S and 4S guises, with a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six agent rated for 443 horsepower, which is 23 added than before. A new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch is your alone chiral best at launch, but Porsche promises a chiral is on the way later.
At aboriginal bloom the new 911 may not attending that altered than its predecessor, but the car is 1.77 inches added up advanced with a bonanza and headlight analysis evocative of the 993-generation 911 of the mid-1990s. It additionally has flush-mounted electric aperture handles and restyled, advanced taillights. Added technologies accommodate actualization like a Wet Mode, which will acclimatize the adherence and braking systems back it detects baptize on the road, and accepted precollision braking.
Electric-vehicle startup Rivian is acclimated the LA actualization to acknowledge its R1T auto barter and its R1S SUV. The auto claims a 400-plus-mile ambit and a 0-60 time beneath 3 seconds, as able-bodied as absorbing towing and burden ratings. The R1S is a three-row affluence crossover that is additionally advised for lots of off-roading. It’ll use the aforementioned motors and array packs as the truck, admitting its active ambit should be a little longer, at up to 410 afar of ambit if you accept the 180-kWh array pack. Back assembly time comes, Rivian has apprenticed to body its cartage at the above Mitsubishi branch in Normal, Illinois. The R1T is due in abatement 2020 and the R1S should appear in aboriginal 2021.
This is a huge year for Toyota at the LA Auto Show, with two above bread-and-butter debuts in the anatomy of the all-wheel-drive Toyota Prius, which adds an electric motor to its rear arbor to advice it allurement bodies abroad from crossovers, and the all-new 2020 Corolla Sedan, which additionally adds a amalgam powertrain for the aboriginal time in the US market. Volvo brought a basic absoluteness audience of its fancy-pants 360c concept, a driverless car advised to leave the sensor accouterments carbuncles abaft for a smoother, below autonomous-looking (that is, added attractive) appearance. Added than that, Volvo isn’t planning to accept any added assembly cars on display. It did, however, accept a accumulation of Amazon boxes for bodies to sit on, so attending advanced to that, accurate believers.
Our editor-in-chief, Tim Stevens, afresh got up abutting and claimed with this avant-garde machine. You can apprehend added about the free 360c here.

The automaker presented the next-generation model at the Geneva Motor Show 2018, which goes on sale in the 2019 model year. The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe has made many significant improvements that cover almost every segment of the world. vehicle. Therefore, the fourth generation of Santa Fe is now on the new platform and, as a result, is now larger than its predecessor. With the growth of size, comes the larger interior space that offers more space and better comfort for all passengers. The exterior style becomes more daring and daring. In addition, it is now offered with the new diesel engine in the XL finish and is more fuel efficient.
However, in line with the brand new reports, the new edition of this model is also underneath development and could appear because of the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe. This version will probably be a report because the manufacturer has just given a full update. Instead, they are working on the newest SUV that will represent one of the largest SUVs in the lineup and will feature a three-row seat configuration.
2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Exterior and Interior
There should be no changes in the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe since the current version has just been revised. The Santa Fe is now rolling on the new platform that has made it longer and wider. This has also affected the size of the cabin and now there is more space and comfort for all passengers. The exterior now looks bolder, thicker and more square than the 2018 model year. The grille has a more aggressive design and the headlights have also been revised.
  2020 Hyundai Santa FE Interior
The Hyundai Santa Fe 2020 will be offered with configurations of five and seven seats. The interior space is improved and there is more space for the legs and the head for everyone. The board is large and has a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and standard Android Auto connectivity. The basic model includes satellite radio, a premium audio system, Qi smartphone charging and a backup camera. The new Hyundai will be available in SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, Ultimate and 2.2D versions, with more modern features.
The new infotainment system, with a larger screen in the higher versions (and probably also in the N model), comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the Qi wireless charging system is optional. An optional 8.5-inch front view screen is also available, which projects a virtual image onto the windshield with various information about the vehicle.
2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Engines and performance

The second is a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that produces 235 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the 2019 model year added a new engine and this is a 2.2 turbodiesel-4 that drives the Santa Fe XL. This engine is capable of producing 190 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque. All engines will operate with an 8-speed automatic transmission and will be equipped with front-wheel drive as standard. However, the all-wheel-drive configuration will also be available.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Aims to Create Buzz
The 2020 Sonata will not be instantly recognizable as a Hyundai, but it is designed to be a head-turner and create buzz similar to the impact of the 2011 Sonata, says SangYup Lee, head of the Hyundai Global Design Center in Namyang, Korea.
The next-generation Sonata is one of 13 new vehicles coming this year for the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. It will be on display at the New York auto show in April with production set to begin soon.
This is an important year as Hyundai works to rebrand itself as more emotional and sporty while still offering value and retaining its commitment to cars—more are coming next year—even as Hyundai expands its crossover lineup and still plans to add the Santa Cruz car-based pickup.
Hyundai Le Fil Rouge Concept
Designing the eighth-generation Sonata was a challenge knowing it must excite consumers who continue to forgo sedans. “The new Sonata is quite challenging for us obviously just because we all know that market is shrinking and taken over by SUVs,” Lee said in an interview with MotorTrend.
As companies such as Ford, FCA, and General Motors cut their car lineups, Hyundai found itself deciding whether to proceed with a new car. But the Sonata is integral to the brand, accounting for almost a sixth of its sales as it competes with juggernauts such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
Hyundai chose to make a new Sonata but knew it had to be more appealing, with progressive design—no big-box sedan. “It’s almost like a four-door coupe style without compromising the usability inside,” Lee said.
“We will make big statements this year,” Lee said, akin to the 2011 Sonata, the sixth generation that made people take notice. It was one of the first coupe-style sedans, a provocative design at the time. Lee was a designer at General Motors working on Camaro and Corvette when he saw that Sonata with its distinctive profile. “I was looking at it, and I was like, ‘Wow. That is something else. And it’s going to be a hit with this market.’ As soon as I saw it, I sensed it, and second thing is, ‘why didn’t I think of that?’”
Lee thinks the 2020 Sonata can have the same impact. The design is inspired by the Le Fil Rouge concept (pictured above) shown a year ago in Geneva. Some Hyundai signature cues will remain, such as a hint of the cascading grille and the composite lens in the headlights.
But the face will not be recognizable as a Hyundai. Lee wants people to like it and take a second look and see that it’s a Hyundai. Rather than Russian nesting dolls, the goal is a portfolio of chess pieces that look and behave differently, but when they’re all together, their roles are clear.
Powertrains are uncertain. The current 1.6-liter turbocharged I-4 could be dropped while keeping the base 2.4-liter I-4 and 2.0-liter turbo-four. A Sonata N performance variant could be a candidate for the third-generation Theta turbocharged 2.5-liter. The six-speed automatic transmission could be retired with the eight-speed to fall back on as well as the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. And we expect hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
Sonata dates back to 1985 when the midsize car was first produced in Korea. It was essentially a face-lifted Hyundai Stellar with more power sold in Korea, Canada, and New Zealand to little success. The second generation in 1988 was part of Hyundai’s expansion in North America, including the U.S., and the design was by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign. In addition to Ulsan, Korea, there was a plant in Bromont, Quebec, until it closed in 1993.
The current seventh-gen Hyundai Sonata
Over its various generations it has used Mitsubishi engines, migrated to a platform shared with the Kia Optima and the first Hyundai Santa Fe, and was the first host for the new Theta I-4 engine and part of the production launch in 2005 at the first U.S. plant in Montgomery, Alabama. After the eye-catching 2011 model, the current seventh-generation model was unveiled at the 2014 New York auto show with more conservative styling to bolster sales in Korea. A plug-in hybrid with a 27-mile electric-only range was added in late 2015 in 10 states. The outgoing sedan got a refresh for the 2018 model year.
Lee does design work for both Hyundai and Genesis. Although Genesis was born from Hyundai, the luxury brand has a different legacy. As Hyundai positions itself as the sporty and emotional value brand, the infant Genesis brand must be progressive and daring and strives to celebrate Korean culture.
The current G70, G80, and G90 sedans will be followed up with the first SUV, the GV80, which is coming this year. Genesis has more new vehicles coming this year, but Lee is tight-lipped about the other products on tap.
He does confirm that work continues on a production version of the Essentia sports car. It is an iconic statement to define the brand, and he says it will be even better than the concept.
