New Toyota trim packages revealed for LA Auto Show

Toyota’s turning down the lights in honor of the end of Daylight Savings Time and the beginning of the LA Auto Show. All new head-turning Toyota trim-packages have been revealed, including new Nightshade Special Editions for the 2019 Toyota Camry and Highlander and even a tease at some TRD special edition trim packages for the 2019 Toyota Avalon and Camry. We have all the details here at Toyota of Clermont and we can’t wait to share these new vehicles with you!

What to know about the new Toyota trim packages

Just recently, the Nightshade Special Edition was revealed for the 2019 Toyota 4Runner and we were wowed by the sleek and stylish black accent pieces. Now, Toyota is bringing that style to the Clermont Toyota Camry and Highlander. These two models and their Toyota trim packages will be further showcased at the LA Auto Show later this month. But, for now, we have some details you don’t want to miss out on.

Toyota Highlander

The Nightshade Special Edition of the 2019 Toyota Highlander will be available on the SE grade and include a number of new blacked out stylized features like:

19-inch wheels with black lug nuts

Emblems and badging

Exterior door handles

Mirror caps

Headlights and fog lamps

Shark fin antenna

This Clermont Toyota trim package will be available with Blizzard Pearl, Predawn Gray Mica, Midnight Black Metallic, and Salsa Red Pearl. This particular package will only be available in a 5,000 unit run so you need to act fast when they arrive to the dealership!

This year, the auto manufacturer debuted plans for five new cars: the 2020 Corolla, 2019 Prius AWD-e, 2020 Avalon TRD, 2020 Camry TRD, and 2019 RAV4. Here’s a recap of everything you missed from this event and when you can expect some of these new models to roll into our dealership.

TOP 20: THE BEST VEHICLES FOR THE FAMILY IN 2020 ACCORDING TO PARENTS MAGAZINE

Once again this year, Parents magazine gets wet by naming its best choices of vehicles for the family. Unlike last year, however, the publication is expanding its list of recommended vehicles to 20 (instead of 10 in 2019). Indeed, the magazine’s list this year includes a few additional categories, with the utility segment making up the majority of the models listed, unsurprisingly.

The magazine also considered the safety assessments carried out by the American institute NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). What’s more, the ‘family’ angle of the top 20 requires a test with child seat expert Abbie Patterson. Patterson, owner of the Super Car Seat Geek company, has tested all types of child booster seats in more than 50 car models.

Finally, automotive columnist Rob Stumpf, took the wheel of the vehicles in the child seat test to evaluate braking, steering, acceleration and a host of other parameters.

Without further ado, here’s the list of the 20 best family vehicles for 2020 according to Parents magazine.

Minivans – Best Value: Kia Sedona

In the minivan segment, Kia Sedona takes home the honours with the best value for money because of its more affordable price in its basic livery. However, the magazine notes that it is not possible to secure three child seats in the second row in the least expensive model. The automatic transmission (from 6 to 8 gears since the 2019 model year) is good for smooth shifting.

Minivans – Best Green Choice: Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

Chrysler’s representative in the ultra-family minivan segment is currently the only option (in the North American market) marketed with a charging cable. This rechargeable hybrid powertrain lowers average fuel consumption without penalizing performance, while the government rebate is not to be ignored here either. The Pacifica Hybrid will have to watch its back, as we already know that the next Toyota Sienna will be available with a hybrid powertrain.

Minivans – Best choice for large families: Honda Odyssey

Honda’s Odyssey is also an excellent choice, especially since the manufacturer has decided to offer its 10-speed automatic transmission on all trim levels. As reported in the magazine, the versatility of the Odyssey is unparalleled, as the minivan can accommodate up to six child seats at the same time. It’s also the most fun to drive.

Minivans – Best in all weather conditions: Toyota Sienna

Toyota’s Sienna retains its competitive edge once again this year with its optional all-wheel drive system. This increased traction is undoubtedly an asset when road conditions are more difficult, as is its powerful V6 engine, but the Sienna will have to count the Chrysler Pacifica among its direct rivals next year, the American manufacturer having already confirmed the arrival of a four-wheel drive version of its Pacifica.

Three-row SUV – Best Value: Volkswagen Atlas

When the German automaker launched the development of its three-row SUV, it clearly had North America as its target. The magazine was especially seduced by the affordable price of the SUV in its most accessible version.

Three-row SUV – Better Redesign: Toyota Highlander

The change of model for 2020 does him the greatest good, the former Highlander which had been in service since model year 2014. While the publication praises the new design, it’s also in terms of handling that the Toyota representative has improved, especially in terms of suspension. There’s also the availability of a hybrid version, which isn’t widely available in this group.

Three-row SUV – Best Choice for Large Families: Subaru Ascent

The Subaru Ascent joined the three-row seating party for SUVs about a year ago. Here, the fact that all the vehicle’s liveries are equipped with constant-drive all-wheel drive is meant to be an advantage over the rest of the pack, while the publication pointed out that there are 19 (!) cup holders on board.

Three-row SUV – Best Quiet Ride: Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot looks almost Acura inside, not only because of its full equipment, but also because of its quiet ride. In fact, the Parents magazine article even goes so far as to compare the Pilot to the Honda Odyssey because the SUV is so comfortable. Unlike the minivan, however, the Pilot still offers the tandem of six- and nine-speed automatic transmissions. In this case, the older of the two (the six-speed one) isn’t necessarily a bad choice!

Three-row SUV – Best safety technologies: Nissan Pathfinder

Aging, the Nissan Pathfinder still seems capable of seducing a publication that mainly observes a vehicle’s family characteristics. Here, the safety systems are convincing, as is that horn blast heard after every drive where one of the rear doors has been opened before or while driving. This device reminds the driver that he or she may have a child – or even a pet – strapped to the rear.

Three-row SUV – Best Design: Mazda CX-9

Mazda is certainly not a brand with countless financial resources, but on the other hand, the design of the most recent seasons seems to appeal to the general public. In fact, despite its introduction in 2017, Mazda’s largest SUV has not aged a single wrinkle. The CX-9’s driving pleasure should not be forgotten either.

Two-row SUV – Best Quiet Ride: Buick Envision

The three-shield division has long been associated with the silence of its interior. The Buick Envision, assembled in China, is no exception to this rule thanks to the noise reduction system.

Parents magazine mentions the excellence of the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, but this mill is reserved for the more upscale versions. In the other trim levels, the driver has to deal with a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine and a six-speed transmission only.

Two-row SUV – Best steering system: Chevrolet Equinox

It’s true that the Chevrolet Equinox comes with a reputation for being poorly assembled and less durable than average. But since its redesign for the 2018 model year, the compact SUV does much better in terms of driving experience, and even overall quality. Parents magazine found the Chevrolet’s steering to be particularly precise, while its powertrain is powerful enough.

Two-row SUV – Better space for child seats: Ford Edge

When it comes to space for child seats, the Ford Edge is second to none, according to the publication. This allows for three seats, a rarity in the two-row SUV segment. The Ford Edge is also one of the most comfortable.

Two-Row SUV – Best Redesign : GMC Terrain

Best redesign award for two-row SUVs goes… drum roll – at GMC Terrain! Oddly enough, the redesign was completed for the 2018 model year at the same time as the Chevrolet Equinox, but hey, it’s the magazine’s choice! The article also mentions the more comfortable suspension on the Denali model.

Two-Row SUV – Best Green Choice: Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The Subaru manufacturer is often named on this list by Parents magazine. The Forester would be the ideal vehicle for expeditions, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive, roof rack and exemplary comfort. You could even add that the Forester’s fuel consumption has been very good for the past few years, a fact made possible by the adoption of a continuously variable transmission.

Sedans – Best Value for a Hybrid: Honda Accord Hybrid

In the arguments listed by Parents magazine, the Honda Accord Hybrid sedan doesn’t cost much more than the regular model, while trunk space is no longer handicapped by a battery stowed behind the rear seat. The Accord Hybrid is also not an unpleasant car to drive.

Sedans – Best in all weather conditions: Subaru Legacy

The manufacturer has made it its hobbyhorse: four-wheel drive guarantees superior traction in winter. The Nissan Altima has joined the Legacy’s direct rivals with an AWD system, but it’s not a permanent type like Subaru’s.

The redesign for 2020 has certainly helped in this case, the sedan can now be ordered with a more energetic 4-cylinder turbocharged flatbed engine.

Sedans – Best sports car: Nissan Maxima

This was its angle of attack when it was redesigned for the 1989 model year in North America. The Four Door Sports Car still stands out from its peers today because of its relatively dynamic driving dynamics. However, Toyota’s effort is worth mentioning with its Avalon XSE, a large sedan that is surprisingly fun to drive. In the United States, there’s also a TRD livery!

Sedans – Best Hybrid Sports Car: Toyota Camry Hybrid

Still, it’s surprising to see that the hybrid versions are now the sportiest in Toyota’s lineup. Even the Camry is no exception to this rule. The manufacturer continues to offer a V6 engine for the more conservative among us, but we have to admit that the hybrid leaning of the mid-size sedan is at least worth a try.

2020 Toyota Avalon TRD First Drive Review: The Unlikeliest TRD

Toyota Racing Development has been best known for producing factory off-road pickups and SUVs as of late, but for TRD’s 40th anniversary, Toyota has tasked its in-house tuner with a slew of new production cars. We’ve already covered the 2019 Toyota 86 TRD and 2020 Camry TRD, but how does the unlikeliest of TRD products, the 2020 Avalon TRD, stack up?

For starters, it’s a real-deal TRD

The skeptics among us would probably be quick to call the Avalon TRD little more than a trim package—I know I did. But truth is, TRD engineers had a crucial hand in shaping this particular Avalon. Using the Avalon Touring as the jumping-off point and with a focus on handling, TRD dropped the Touring model’s electronic adaptive suspension in favor of stiffer new steel springs and shocks, lowered the ride height by 0.6 inch, and added new bumpstops. The TRD team also fit its version of the Avalon with dual- (instead of single-) piston front brake calipers with larger rotors, added an electronic brake-based front differential, and rounded the car out with stiffer underbody bracing than is found on the standard Avalon, along with wider, lighter wheels (shared with the Camry TRD) and unique styling.

The chassis reinforcements and suspension tweaks make a noticeable difference out on the road. Although it’s still more softly sprung than the Camry TRD, the Avalon TRD is the better balanced of the two cars. There’s less impact harshness than its slightly smaller platform mate, and the Avalon’s lighter steering feel does a better job of transmitting what little information there is from the front wheels to the driver.

Weirdly though, when driven back to back with the baseline Avalon Touring—like, say, on an autocross course, the Avalon’s natural habitat outside the retirement community—it’s the Touring model that’s more impressive. The biggest difference between the Avalon Touring and the TRD model is the former’s Sport + mode, which, when combined with its electronically adaptive suspension, helps keep the Avalon flatter and more neutral through bends, making it easier to put the power down. The TRD model exhibits more roll than the Touring (even if it felt stiffer) and thus doesn’t put its power down as well.

But TRD didn’t touch the engine or transmission

For better or worse, Toyota corporate didn’t allow the TRD team to make any mechanical changes, save for fitting the Avalon TRD with a cat-back exhaust. Like all non-hybrid Avalons, the TRD model has a 3.6-liter V-6 good for 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic.

The V-6 is a perfectly nice engine; it makes its power near redline, but it revs smoothly and sounds good enough through its new TRD exhaust. However, its gearbox is simply maddening. Despite the car’s 112-mph(!) top speed, the Avalon’s eight-speed is geared like a four-speed auto, with third gear good through 90 mph, so gears five through eight are essentially dead weight. Shorter gear ratios would significantly improve performance, likely without any cost to fuel economy. They’d also likely help cure the automatic’s tendency to randomly hunt through gears.

Surprisingly, Toyota took the Avalon TRD (and Camry TRD) to racetracks during the development process

TRD engineers used three tracks (along with some of their favorite backroads) to fine-tune the Avalon and Camry TRD models. They’re not big-name tracks like Laguna Seca or Road America, but TRD says it used Motorsport Ranch in Texas, Arizona Motorsports Park, and the track on Toyota’s Arizona proving grounds during the development process.

Toyota is targeting the Avalon TRD at the Audi A6, Ford Fusion Sport, and Kia Stinger GT

Toyota has some pretty lofty targets for the Avalon TRD. Specifically, it called out the Audi A6, the recently discontinued Ford Fusion Sport, and the Kia Stinger GT. That’s, uh, ambitious. Although I’d have to drive them back to back to say for sure, the Avalon TRD certainly has its work cut out for it.

The A6 makes significantly more power from its turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 (340 hp and 369 lb-ft), has torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, and is significantly more luxurious than the Avalon TRD—though it’s worth mentioning that the latter car has among the nicest interiors, in terms of both design and quality, Toyota has put together in a long time.

The Fusion Sport also made more power than the Avalon TRD, with its twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 pumping out 325 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Like the A6, it too has all-wheel drive. The Fusion Sport, before it was discontinued, was also one of the funner sedans to drive in its segment.

The rear-wheel-drive Stinger GT also makes significantly more power than the Avalon TRD. An exceptionally pretty and well-balanced sport sedan, the Stinger GT earned an invite to Best Driver’s Car in 2018 and placed a respectable ninth out of 12 competitors. It has a powerful 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 making 365 hp and 376 lb-ft under its hood. The Stinger is also available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 good for 255 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

Avalon TRD production will be limited

Toyota says it’ll initially limit Avalon TRD production to about 2,600 units for the 2020 model year and says it’ll happily build more if demand is high enough. Prices for the 2020 Toyota Avalon TRD start at $43,295, and it’s on sale now.

Toyota RAV4 Trail et l’emblème de la marque

Savez-vous quoi? Le petit VUS RAV4 de Toyota est devenu le véhicule le plus vendu de ce constructeur d’origine japonaise en Amérique du Nord. Oui, ses ventes ont même dépassé celles de sa désormais légendaire berline Camry. En fait, chez nos voisins du sud, les ventes du RAV4 se placent juste après celles des grands pick-up et avant celles de bien des autos. Je n’ai donc plus besoin de vous parler de la popularité de ce véhicule, même chez nous. Mais alors, il a fallu beaucoup de courage à Toyota pour le redessiner avant que la concurrence ne le rattrape ! En voici donc le résultat, le nouveau Toyota RAV4 dans sa version la plus robuste (pour le moment), la Trail.

Évidemment, pour commencer, il faut parler du nouveau style du RAV4. Car le RAV affiche vraiment une allure toute nouvelle qui se démarque totalement de celle que nous connaissions. Mais avant de parler de ce nouveau style, il faut spécifier que le RAV4 repose maintenant sur une nouvelle plateforme, la TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture que l’on retrouve sous les Prius et les nouvelles Corolla à venir) qui ajoute quelques centimètres à son empattement, un peu à sa largeur et un peu à sa garde au sol, soit environ 1,5 cm. Disponible en plusieurs finitions, celle qui m’a été confiée par Toyota Canada était la plus spectaculaire Trail qui se veut une sorte de «off-roader», du moins au point de vue look. (Incidemment, la version Trail s’appelle Adventure aux États-Unis).

L’avant du nouveau RAV4 n’est pas sans nous rappeler celui de biens des camionnettes de la marque. Dans le cas du modèle Trail, on dirait une copie de l’avant du grand VUS 4Runner de la marque. Si vous regardez les photos, vous verrez certainement que les lignes du nouveau RAV4 Trail sont plus droites et surtout plus agressives que dans le passé. Le Trail, lui, est reconnaissable à des carénages en plastique ajoutés aux bas de caisse et aux passages de roue. À noter aussi, le véhicule est à deux teintes et avec son toit blanc, ça nous rappelle un le FJ Cruiser.

L’intérieur a aussi été redessiné. Je suis content de constater que le tableau de bord a été mieux étudié et que les commandes qui étaient autrefois trop basses, sont maintenant plus à la portée. J’aime beaucoup la sellerie et je crois que les coutures et finitions de couleur viennent ajouter une touche sportive à l’intérieur du Trail. Toutefois, sans vouloir passer pour un «Toyota Basher» (ce que certains lecteurs m’ont déjà traité), je trouve aussi quelques autres petits défauts à cet aménagement intérieur. Le plus difficile à comprendre, c’est l’emplacement de la poignée de portière pour refermer celle-ci. Elle est définitivement trop à l’avant et l’effort demandé par les occupants d’avant pour refermer cette portière n’est pas un geste naturel. Il demande un effort supplémentaire. Il faudrait vraiment une poignée au centre de la garniture.

De retour à cet intérieur, le volant, quoique chargé de commandes est de bonne grandeur et il offre une bonne prise. L’instrumentation est bien disposée devant le conducteur alors qu’au centre, on trouve un écran de dimensions moyennes qui sert, vous l’aurez compris, pour la radio, certaines commandes de chauffage et ainsi de suite et pour la caméra d’arrière. Attention, revoici le «Toyota Basher». L’écran n’est pas très grand, ça va de soi. Mais, l’image que la caméra d’arrière transmet n’est pas très claire. Qui plus est, son format «fisheye» la rend encore plus distortionnée. La console entre les deux sièges d’avant contient le levier de vitesse et une mollette qui sert à choisir l’adaptation du système de traction intégrale pour la boue, la terre, la neige et ainsi de suite. Les places arrière sont relativement confortables alors que les dossiers peuvent se replier pour agrandir le compartiment du cargo qui possède, lui, une toile cache-bagage. D’ailleurs, pour y accéder, on a droit à un hayon qui s’ouvre et se referme par assistance électrique.

Si l’on s’arrête aux spécifications mécaniques du nouveau RAV4, il faut mentionner que c’est toujours un quatre cylindres de 2,5 litres qui motive ce véhicule. Cependant, cette année, il fait 27 chevaux de plus que l’année dernière à 203 chevaux et 12 li-pi de plus de couple à 184 li-pi. (il y a une version hybride de ce RV4 qui a une motorisation différente). Toute cette puissance est dirigée à une nouvelle boîte automatique à huit rapports. Le tout passe ensuite par un boîtier de transfert qui inclue le système Dynamic Torque Vectoring (modulation de couple dynamique) avec désaccouplement automatique de la transmission arrière. Tout cela fonctionne avec l’aide d’un ordinateur sans que le conducteur n’ait à y intervenir. Il y a la commande rotative à la console du centre et des boutons à presser pour passer en mode boue, sable, roche, terre ou neige. La direction est avec assistance électrique alors que le freinage est avec antiblocage et assistance d’urgence. Quant aux pneus d’origine, ce sont des unités des dimensions P235/55R19 mais dans le cas de notre véhicule d’essai, celui-ci avait été équipé de pneus d’hiver Bridgestone Blizzak qui se sont avérés très utiles.

Sur la route

Il est facile de monter à bord du nouveau RAV4 malgré qu’il ait une garde au sol légèrement plus élevée. Le démarrage se fait en pressant un bouton au tableau de bord et, encore une fois, votre «Toyota Basher» préféré aimerait y ajouter son petit grain de sel. J’ai trouvé (et certaines de mes passagers aussi) que le son du moteur envahissait un peu trop l’habitacle. Peut-être qu’un peu d’isolant entre le compartiment-moteur et l’habitacle serait apprécié? Après quelques minutes au volant, je me suis rendu compte que la boîte de vitesses agissait avec hésitation si l’on ne s’arrêtait pas complètement aux intersections. C’est alors que la boîte retombe assez brusquement en première ce qui peut être inconfortable en conduite urbaine (notez que plusieurs autos ont ce même vilain défaut, surtout celles avec des boîtes à multiples rapports...ce qui prouve que je ne suis pas qu’un Toyota Basher!). Les accélérations sont honnêtes mais pas aussi spectaculaires que le son prononcé du moteur à l’effort voudrait nous le faire croire. Passer de 0 à 100 km/h demande quand même quelque neuf secondes ce qui est respectable mais pas renversantes. Les réactions de reprises sont semblables, beaucoup de bruit mais des temps un peu longs.

Autrement, le RAV4 est agréable à conduire. J’ai même roulé sur l’autoroute avec d’importants vents latéraux et la caisse a à peine réagi. Le petit VUS est étonnement stable et relativement silencieux en vitesse de croisière. Il est assez agile en ville mais son rayon de braquage peut être un peu grand pour les manœuvres dans les stationnements de centre commerciaux. Quant à la visibilité, elle est relativement facile, surtout si on la compare à d’autres modèles de la marque (on se souviendra de celle des FJ Cruiser).

Hors-route

Vraiment? Hors-route? Non, pas spécifiquement. Si le Trail a été créé pour les conducteurs plus aventureux qui voudraient quitter la route pour des sentiers hors-route, il faudra prendre cela avec un grain de sel. Évidemment, ce petit VUS qui se veut un tout-terrain en image pourra attaquer des routes de terre, voire même des sentiers d’accès à un chalet avec certains obstacles raisonnables mais ce n’est certes pas un tout-terrain. J’ai voulu essayer le système Dynamic Torque sur un terrain un peu demandant. Le petit véhicule s’est bien débrouillé mais il ne faudrait pas en demander plus. Quant au système, il s’est fait tellement transparent que je n’y ai senti aucun changement mécanique. Mais on est loin d’un 4Runner TRD!

Ma semaine au volant du RAV4 Trail s’est conclue avec un calcul de consommation d’essence de 9,9 l/100 km ce que je considère normal pour un tel véhicule, surtout en hiver. Le prix de base de la version Trail est de 38 960 $. Mon modèle d’essai avait l’option de la peinture à deux teintes de 540 $. Et il faut ajouter les (si ridicules) 100 $ de la taxe d’accise pour la climatisation, quelque 31,40 $ de taxes locales d’environnement (pneus, filtres, etc.) et 1 815 $ de frais de transport et de préparation pour un grand total de 41 176 $...plus taxes.

Je suis certain que le RAV4 connaîtra un grand succès sur le marché (malgré les remarques négatives de votre Toyota Basher préféré). Restera à voir comment réagira la concurrence. Ford nous prépare un Escape révisé pour très bientôt. Sera-t-il capable de concurrencer le RAV4. Ce sera intéressant à suivre…

Comprenez-vous le sigle de Toyota?

Comprenez-vous ce que le sigle de Toyota représente? C’est un amalgame des lettres T-O-Y-O-T-A. La barre horizontale du T est le haut de l’ovale (la moitié supérieure). Sa barre verticale est divisée en deux au centre du sigle. Le O, c’est le contour de l’ovale. Le Y, c’est la barre centrale dont les extrémités remontent vers le haut et une partie des barres verticales du centre. On revient au O et au T déjà expliqués alors que le A , c’est le croisement entre les barres verticales un peu arquées et la barre centrale traversant celles-ci! Compris?
