2014-2019 Toyota Corolla (E170/E180)

Nissan Altima SR Midnight et Michelin CrossClimate 2

Il y a de moins en moins de voitures berlines sur notre marché. Chez Ford, il n’y en a, pour ainsi dire, plus du tout (en tant qu’autos, il ne reste que le coupé Mustang mais ce n’est pas une berline). Chez Lincoln, plus du tout, Chez GM, il en reste quelques-unes, surtout des Cadillac. Chez la division Chrysler de Stellantis, il ne resterait que la Charger ou presque.

S’il y a des berlines, c’est surtout grâce à quelques marques allemandes et asiatiques. Oui, les Japonais continuent de nous proposer de telles autos mais on est loin de la popularité qu’elles connaissaient il n’y a pas si longtemps! Quand on constate que les ventes du petit VUS RAV4 de Toyota ont dépassé celles des berlines Camry qui étaient autrefois les voitures les plus vendues en Amérique…!  Honda aussi nous propose une belle Accord…mais ce n’est pas la ruée vers les concessionnaires de la marque. Ce qui m’amène à la très abordable Altima de Nissan. Voilà une autre berline qui a connu des heures plus glorieuses. Pourtant, elle est toujours avec nous. C’est justement d’une de ces Nissan dont il s’agit cette semaine, une belle Altima 2.5 SR Midnight. Et à traction intégrale, de surcroît!

La version Midnight est une présentation un peu plus détaillée de cette auto avec des décorations peintes en noir, des déflecteurs et des jantes aussi peintes en noir. Autrement, c’est presque la même voiture que j’ai conduite il y a environ trois ans (août 2019). À cette époque, l’Altima était toute nouvelle. Tout comme aujourd’hui, elle affichait cet avant dont la calandre est représentative de tous les produits Nissan. En d’autres mots, on serait en droit aujourd’hui de s’attendre à des retouches ou à des améliorations de l’Altima. Cette finition Midnight est une option que beaucoup de constructeurs utilisent pour marquer la fin de la production d’une version du produit concerné. Serait-ce le cas pour l’Altima?

Pour vous rafraîchir la mémoire, soulignons que cette berline d’origine japonaise mais construite au Tennessee n’est disponible qu’avec un seul ensemble mécanique au Canada soit un quatre cylindres atmosphérique de 2,5 litres qui fait 182 chevaux et 178 li-pi de couple. Il est combiné à une boîte automatique à variation continue (CVT). Évidemment, cette Nissan ne vient qu’avec la traction intégrale si importante dans une contrée froide comme la nôtre (en hiver, bien entendu). Sa suspension indépendante aux quatre roues lui procure une tenue de route respectable alors que le freinage est appuyé de disque aux quatre roues. Les pneus, d’imposants Bridgestone Turanza 235/40R19, contribuent eux aussi à la tenue de route sans, toutefois, être trop durs sur la route.

L’intérieur n’a pas changé non plus. Il retient une grande partie des caractéristiques de la version essayée en 2019. Sauf que, cette fois, cette Altima est moins équipée que la version Platinum précédente. Le tableau de bord demeure joli mais l’écran de la radio-navigation est, selon les standards d’aujourd’hui, un peu petit. Puis, mon modèle d’essai n’avait pas cette fonction optionnelle Pro-Pilot Assist qui rend la voiture semi-autonome. Par contre, cette Nissan présente toujours un intérieur vaste et confortable à commencer avec les deux sièges d’avant dont celui du conducteur qui est ajustable de plusieurs façons auquel Nissan avait ajouté une fonction de massage! Notons, encore une fois, que les places arrière sont généreuses, un élément qui pourrait motiver les petites familles à choisir cette auto plutôt qu’un VUS ou un VUM. Enfin, le coffre est aussi très impressionnant et il s’agrandit facilement en abaissant le dossier des sièges arrière.

Sur la route

J’ai donc utilisé une telle Nissan Altima SR Midnight pour me rendre dans la région de Toronto afin de participer à l’ÉcoRandonnée dont il était question la semaine dernière dans ce blogue.

Et, je crois, que c’est ici que l’Altima se distingue; sur les longs trajets. Qui dit Montréal-Toronto dit une longue route sur un chemin des plus…ennuyants, la tristement célèbre 410 (elle devient l’autoroute 20 au Québec). Ceux qui font ce trajet souvent sauront de quoi je parle! Par conséquent, il est important alors d’adopter un véhicule qui pourra nous faire supporter un tel «supplice». Et ce, sans devoir payer une fortune pour ce faire. Ni une fortune en essence (surtout au prix où elle est rendue de nos jours…sans espoir de le voir diminuer!).

Par conséquent, je crois ne pas me tromper en suggérant l’Altima pour attaquer ces longues routes. Tout d’abord, il faut dire qu’à 32 933 $ (incluant la peinture optionnelle nacrée de 135 $), elle pourrait être considérée «raisonnable». Puis, son habitacle était si dégagé qu’on peut y respirer à l’aise. Enfin, le grand coffre permettra aux gens d’affaire d’y transporter leurs effets et plus encore. Et ceux-ci seront plus en sécurité (moins à la vue des curieux) que s’ils avaient été dans un VUS.

Deuxièmement, en plus d’être confortable, la berline Altima est relativement silencieuse avec une tenue de route respectable (je le répète) et la sécurité qu’apportera la traction intégrale en hiver et sur pavé mouillé en été. Notez que les ingénieurs de Nissan ont vu à conserver une bonne partie de la puissance aux roues avant en conduite régulière. La propulsion arrière ne sera activée que lorsque le «système» détectera une perte d’adhérence aux roues avant. Ainsi, l’économie de carburant sera moins affectée ! Sur la 401, l’ordinateur de bord indiquait une moyenne de 5,4 litres aux 100 km à une moyenne de 110 km/h!

Toutefois, mes déplacements ne se sont pas limités qu’à un voyage en Ontario. J’ai aussi roulé l’Altima dans mon patelin en plus de me rendre aux courses au circuit Mont-Tremblant. En bout de ligne, la moyenne totale de consommation à la pompe a été de 6,13 l./100 km., beaucoup mieux que mes résultats de 2019! Pas si mal pour une berline aussi grande! En passant, EnerGuide Canada annonce une consommation moyenne de 6,7 l./100 km pour l’Altima (là aussi, c’est une amélioration de ce que la voiture pouvait faire en 2019 selon la même source!).

Malheureusement, il y a aussi quelques petits défauts à noter. En ce qui me concerne, j’ai trouvé que la visibilité arrière était sérieusement bloquée par les appuie-tête mais plus encore par le cadre (butte) du troisième feu (central) d’arrêt dans le bas de la lunette arrière. Cet élément mériterait d’être déplacé (dans le haut du capot du coffre, peut-être…). Puis, il y a la puissance. On ne peut pas dire que le moteur soit vraiment performant. Oh! Il réussit très bien à déplacer la grande caisse de l’Altima mais en accélération, il s’essouffle vite (de 0 à 100 km/h peut demander quelque huit ou neuf secondes). Il faut dire que la boîte de vitesses CVT n’aide pas beaucoup car elle exige justement du moteur de tourner à haut régime avant de changer de rapport. Par contre, en conduite régulière, cette même boîte est bien étagée et fonctionne tout en douceur. On dirait qu’elle change sept ou huit fois de vitesses (un truc des ingénieurs pour rassurer les automobilistes qui veulent encore «sentir» les changements de vitesse).

Encore une fois, l’Altima 2.5 SR Midnight qui me fut confiée affichait un prix de 32 933 $ incluant les 135 $ de la peinture métallisée nacrée. Il faut alors lui ajouter les 1 830 $ de frais de transport et préparation et les quelques «petites» autres taxes qui viendront se joindre à la fête!

Recommandable l’Altima? Certainement. Surtout à ce prix presque raisonnable. Il lui manque certes quelques petits ajouts de modernité électronique au tableau de bord mais autrement, ce ne sera pas un mauvais choix à considérer si l’on recherche une berline intermédiaire intéressante!

Le pneu Michelin CrossClimate 2 à l’essai

L’été peut ne pas vous sembler la saison idéale pour parler d’essais de pneus. Toutefois, il y a des nouveautés qui pourraient vous intéresser. Sans vouloir vous parler de l’hiver qui s’en vient (on va garder cette menace pour l’automne prochain), sachez qu’il commence à y avoir un créneau de pneus qui est apparu récemment et qui pourrait intéresser les automobilistes qui ne prennent pas souvent leur véhicule en hiver et qui sont «tannés» de courir au garage pour faire changer les pneus d’été pour ceux d’hiver et vice-versa.

On appelle ces produits des «pneus homologués», c’est-à-dire qu’ils sont bons hiver comme été et ce, en toute «légalité» (ce genre de pneus affichera alors une silhouette de montagne avec un flocon de neige sur ses flancs). Pour le moment, il n’y a pas beaucoup de marques qui offrent cette caractéristique mais celles qui le font sont de grands joueurs. Par exemple, le finlandais Nokian nous propose son WR G4 (que j’ai déjà essayé en versions précédentes WR G3 en hiver et dont il sera question plus tard dans ce blogue), l’américain Goodyear avec son WeatherReady, le japonais Toyo avec son Celsius et quelques autres (notez ici qu’il ne s’agit que de pneus pour autos, le choix pouvant être plus grand pour les VUS).

Parmi les autres, il y a surtout Michelin et son CrossClimate 2. Le manufacturier français m’a proposé d’en essayer un jeu pour les mois qui suivent. Je viens tout juste de les faire installer sur la Lincoln MKZ afin de les évaluer durant l’été (bruit, vibrations, réactions sur pavé mouillé, etc…), un exercice que je voudrai aussi faire avec les Nokian WR G4 sur un véhicule équivalent au mien dans les semaines qui suivent. Ces CrossClimate ont un indice de vitesse de 240 km/h.

Pour le moment, mes premières impressions sont comme suit : dessin de bande de roulement inusité (elle ressemble à celle des pneus Vredestein dessinés par Giugiaro il y a environ dix ans ou encore au dessin des Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 mais en plus prononcé), très peu de bruit et aussi confortables que les MXM4 qui les précédaient sur la voiture. Alors que j’allais publier ce blog, j’ai reçu de Nissan Canada un communiqué disant que la version 2023 de l’Altima allait afficher un nouvel avant redessiné et un tableau de bord redessiné. Il y aura aussi à bord de cette berline des nouveautés technologiques pour la sécurité et autres mais, en ce qui concerne la mécanique, elle devrait être pareille à celle discutée plus haut dans ce blogue.

What to know about the new Toyota trim packages

Just recently, the Nightshade Special Edition was revealed for the 2019 Toyota 4Runner and we were wowed by the sleek and stylish black accent pieces. Now, Toyota is bringing that style to the Clermont Toyota Camry and Highlander. These two models and their Toyota trim packages will be further showcased at the LA Auto Show later this month. But, for now, we have some details you don’t want to miss out on.

Toyota Highlander

The Nightshade Special Edition of the 2019 Toyota Highlander will be available on the SE grade and include a number of new blacked out stylized features like:

19-inch wheels with black lug nuts

Emblems and badging

Exterior door handles

Mirror caps

Headlights and fog lamps

Shark fin antenna

This Clermont Toyota trim package will be available with Blizzard Pearl, Predawn Gray Mica, Midnight Black Metallic, and Salsa Red Pearl. This particular package will only be available in a 5,000 unit run so you need to act fast when they arrive to the dealership!

This new Toyota Camry will feature blacked out features like:

Window molding

18-inch wheels

Rear spoiler

Exterior door handles

Headlights and fog lamps

Badging and emblems

This Toyota trim package will be available with the SE grade and with colors like Midnight Black Metallic, Celestial Silver, and Super White.

Toyota also teased, via Twitter, at revealing all new TRD Toyota trim packages for the Clermont Toyota Camry and Avalon. More information for these and the Nightshade Special Edition packages will be revealed at the LA Auto Show on November 28th.
