As that chrome grille closed on me like a man-eating Norelco shaver, time slowed. It seemed I was watching myself from afar, being nimble for a man my age, darting from the path of a towering, limousine-black pickup with temporary plates, whose driver barely checked his pace. Jerk.
What the hell was that thing? A 2020 GMC Sierra HD Denali? It was huge! The domed hood was at forehead level. The paramedics would have had to extract me from the grille with a spray hose, like Randall Jarrell’s ball-turret gunner.

Later, returning to my car, I noticed something: The parking lot was dotted with similarly enormous luxury pickups—many new, many taking up two spaces: Ram,

That’s right: Gucci cowboys. Historically aimed at commercial customers, sole proprietors, horse-haulers and mega-RVers, heavy-duty pickups are stronger and taller than ordinary (half-ton) trucks, with cabs mounted high above reinforced frame rails and heavy, long-travel suspensions. But HD trucks have evolved in the past decade, irradiated with the same prestige-luxury rays as light-duty trucks.
Behold MotorTrend 2020 Truck of the Year, the Ram Heavy-Duty. In Limited trim (about $65,000 with four-wheel drive but before options) the 2500 HD sports an elaborate chromified grille that gleams like a tea service. Its flight deck glows with untrucky amenities such as acoustically insulated glass; active noise canceling; 12-inch center touch screen; wood trim, premium leather—all paired with a maximum 19,680-pound towing capacity. With the optional cab lights, it measures over 6-feet-9 inches tall.
Thus has been born a uniquely American vehicle type: the mega-luxury mega-pickup.

“The front end was always the focal point,” GM designer Karan Moorjani told Muscle Cars & Trucks e-zine. “We spent a lot of time making sure that when you stand in front of this thing it looks like it’s going to come get you.”
Mission accomplished.
But are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? The answers are somewhat and definitely. The average pickup on the road gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and 730 pounds since 2000.
“One of the most significant changes in that time was the arrival of crew-cab configurations, which added cab space to make them more family and work friendly,” said Mike Levine, Ford spokesperson.
In 2011, a change in the way the feds calculate vehicle fuel economy (the so-called “footprint rule”) gave domestic truck makers incentive to go big. Ever since, GMC, Chevy, Ram and Ford have been locked in a competitive feedback loop chasing best-in-class attributes and capacities—the “towing/hauling” wars. For MY 2019, for example, Ram’s 1500 Crew Cab gained 3.9 inches in overall length over a 4.1-inch longer wheelbase. In the same model-year, the Chevy Silverado gained 1.7 inches in length on a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase.
As a result, new light-duty pickup dimensions are approaching those of heavy-duty pickups. While the 2021 F-150 is about 18 inches shorter than the equivalent F-250, it is the same width (79.9). Mr. Levine noted that the company has gone to a common-cab design, using the same four-door living quarters for both light- and heavy-duty models.

The big Chevy’s challenging kisser comprises a thick, knee-high bumper; a central grille opening; several sets of lighting assemblies; a full-width transverse element helpfully informing with the message CHEVROLET
and then, above that, between very square corners, is a whole other layer, then a peaked hood with a central inlet. This hood line meets the base of the windshield about 6 inches above the side window sill.
Another cause of facial swelling? Marketing. “Full-size pickups are generally identical in profile,” Mr. Schirmer said. “The face of these trucks is where the action is; a Ford has to say Ford from head on, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.”
You don’t have to be Steven Pinker to see that truck designers are leaning into the bully with these lantern-jawed bumpers and walls of chrome. Detroit’s blithe codifications of purposeful and powerful pickup design fail to describe the intimidation factor from the outside.
“A few brands, Ram and Ford, have taken to an overscale brand identity [and] applied it onto the grille,” said Kimberly Marte, associate professor of design at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. “The Chevy team did benchmarking of new models and followed the trend.”
It’s not clear how long pickup designs can keep getting their chrome on. In 2018 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study examining the connection between SUV design and pedestrian fatalities. In a separate study released in June, IIHS found fatal single-vehicle crashes involving SUVs striking pedestrians increased 81% from 2009 to 2016.
While IIHS studied SUVs and not pickups, “The key is the geometry of the front end, the high and flat shape,” said Becky Mueller, a senior research engineer for IIHS. “It’s like hitting a wall.”
XL-pickups’ high-rising hoods also create significant blind spots just ahead of the vehicle. I know because apparently I was in one of them. While truck makers like Ford offer automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection systems as standard equipment on most trims, and forward-view cameras as an option, such systems are not mandatory, as they would be in Europe.
NHTSA proposed that new pedestrian-safety tests for SUVs and trucks be included in the New Car Assessment Program in 2015. But as of this writing, the agency had not issued guidance on new standards. When asked, the industry trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation had no comment.
And what if the next administration should issue pickup-pedestrian safety rules? Could the extra tall hoods and bluff grilles, the sightlines, the scale, the very form language of the traditional American pickup ever be made pedestrian safe? “Of course not,” said Ms. Marte. “No way.”

Le Ram HD 2500 qui me fut si aimablement prĂȘtĂ© par FCA Canada Ă©tait une version haut de gamme Laramie Longhorn, une superbe camionnette Ă  quatre portes avec cabine allongĂ©e derriĂšre la banquette d’arriĂšre (Mega Cab) avec caisse de six pieds. Toute la carrosserie de cette camionnette a Ă©tĂ© redessinĂ©e pour 2019-20 mais c’est surtout Ă  l’intĂ©rieur que les designers de FCA ont fait beaucoup de travail. Toutefois, avant d’aller plus loin, spĂ©cifions que des Ram comme ce 2500 sont plus axĂ©s vers le travail que le loisir mĂȘme si plusieurs acheteurs s’en procurent pour du caravaning. C’est un peu avec cette fonction en tĂȘte que j’ai utilisĂ© mon Ram d’essai.

Évidemment, ce qui intĂ©ressera d’abord l’amateur de camionnettes, ce sera la mĂ©canique qui se trouve sous le capot. MĂȘme si le moteur de base des 2500 est un V8 Hemi de 6,4 litres, mon Ram avait le six-cylindres Cummins turbodiesel optionnel comme force motrice. On reconnait Ă  ce moteur de 6,7 litres la capacitĂ© de tirer jusqu’à plus de 35 000 livres grĂące Ă  ses plus de 1000  livres de couple mais cette caractĂ©ristique se retrouve plutĂŽt dans le plus robuste 3500. La version 2500 possĂšde ce moteur mais «qu’avec» 370 chevaux et 850 li-pi de couple
seulement? Il me semble que c’est dĂ©jĂ  amplement suffisant! La seule boĂźte de vitesses disponible avec le moteur diesel est une transmission automatique plus robuste Ă  six vitesses (le V8 Ă  essence a droit Ă  une boĂźte Ă  huit rapports ZF renforcĂ©e). Comme on peut le voir, mon vĂ©hicule d’essai Ă©tait Ă  quatre roues motrices sur commande. La suspension des Ram 2500 est dĂ©sormais Ă  ressorts hĂ©licoĂŻdaux Ă  l’arriĂšre avec bras tirĂ©s ce qui, selon FCA, devrait amĂ©liorer la qualitĂ© du confort
mais ce n’est pas exactement ce que j’ai vĂ©cu! Cependant, je ne m’attendais pas Ă  une portĂ©e de grande limousine d’un camion capable de tirer jusqu’à 19780 livres ou d’accepter 4050 livres de charge dans la caisse.

Mais si l’on passe Ă  l’intĂ©rieur, c’est lĂ  que l’on voit tout le travail que les designers de FCA ont accompli. Il est vrai que je conduisais la version Longhorn de grand luxe. Mais au dĂ©part, il faut vanter l’espace caverneux d’une cabine Mega Cab de Ram. Il y a deux siĂšges Ă  l’avant et une banquette repliable en deux sections Ă  l’arriĂšre (afin de profiter d’un peu d’espace si l’on veut transporter de gros objets prĂ©cieux dans un endroit au sec). Et derriĂšre cette banquette, il y a aussi un espace de rangement pratique. Mais revenons Ă  l’avant oĂč il y a un tableau de bord magnifique avec une instrumentation complĂšte incluant un centre d’information complet entre les deux cadrans principaux. Si vous regardez les photos, vous constaterez qu’il y a un grand, un trĂšs grand Ă©cran de douze pouces qui sert tant Ă  la camĂ©ra de marche arriĂšre qu’à l’infodivertissement mais surtout au GPS! On trouve sous cet Ă©cran des prises pour Apple CarPlay et Android Auto et des prises de courant de 115 volts pour brancher ou charger des outils. Puis, dans le cas du Longhorn, il y a tous ces avertisseurs de dĂ©viation de voie, d’obstacles trop rapprochĂ©s et j’en passe. Ah oui! Il y a aussi la sonorisation Bose assez impressionnante.

Un petit mot sur la caisse arriĂšre (ce que mes confrĂšres prĂ©fĂšrent appeler la «benne»). Celle qui vient avec la cabine Mega Cab est de six pieds et quatre pouces ce qui suffisant pour ce type de camionnette. Cependant, ce que je n’ai pas encore compris de FCA (un constructeur pourtant capable de crĂ©er des accessoires originaux), c’est qu’il n’a pas encore ajoutĂ© des accessoires facilitant l’accĂšs Ă  la caisse arriĂšre comme les marches escamotables de Ford ou un hayon dĂ©ployable Ă  la GMC ou mĂȘme un simple marche-pied escamotable car ce n’est certes pas facile de grimper dans cette caisse!
Impressions de conduite
Le Ram 2500 est d’abord un outil de travail. J’ai souvent conduit des gros Ram avec une remorque Ă  l’arriĂšre et comme tout gros pick-up amĂ©ricain du genre, il se dĂ©brouille trĂšs bien en toutes circonstances (en autant que le conducteur conduise avec discernement). Toutefois, j’ai utilisĂ© ce Ram en conditions urbaines encore une fois
avec discernement. Ma seule excursion en ville fut celle chez Bentley MontrĂ©al (Les Moteurs DĂ©carie) et ce ne fut certes pas facile de garer ce monstre. Mais j’y suis parvenu. C’est la mĂȘme chose dans les centres commerciaux. Il faut trouver un grand espace car le rayon de braquage n’est pas serrĂ©, vous vous en doutez.
Au dĂ©part, une chance que ce Ram Ă©tait Ă©quipĂ© de marche-pieds escamotables sinon la marche aurait Ă©tĂ© trĂšs haute pour accĂ©der au poste de pilotage ou aux autres siĂšges. Une fois derriĂšre le volant, lorsqu’on met en marche, il faut, avec le diesel, ĂȘtre patient. En effet, Ă  froid, le conducteur doit peser sur le bouton de contact mais il doit attendre, le pied sur le frein, que les bougies de rĂ©chauffement (glow plugs) fassent leur travail (environ 10 Ă  12 secondes) avant que le moteur s’anime (une attente qui ne devrait pas se rĂ©pĂ©ter lors d’un dĂ©marrage subsĂ©quent durant la mĂȘme journĂ©e). Celui-ci pourrait ĂȘtre plus bruyant mais, contrairement au vacarme qu’il produisait avec la premiĂšre gĂ©nĂ©ration des Ram modernes il y a plusieurs annĂ©es, Cummins l’a fortement amĂ©liorĂ© (en fait, tout le moteur a Ă©tĂ© revu pour plus de silence et d’efficacitĂ©) alors que FCA rendait la cabine de son Ram mieux isolĂ©e. Donc, ce moteur, que l’on entend quand mĂȘme, est beaucoup plus silencieux qu’anticipĂ©. On passe en vitesse grĂące Ă  un levier Ă  la colonne (pas de commande rotative ici) et on accĂ©lĂšre. DĂ©placer cette masse de plus de 3000 kilos devrait ĂȘtre laborieux, c’est plutĂŽt le contraire qui se produit. La boĂźte de vitesses automatique Ă  six rapports (de Chrysler!) est bien adaptĂ©e au moteur avec des changements de rapports perceptibles mais soyeux. La direction est un peu tendre mais relativement prĂ©cise pour un tel gros camion. GrĂące Ă  des amĂ©liorations apportĂ©es au systĂšme de freinage incluant de plus gros disques, le freinage se fait rassurant. Les pneus qui Ă©quipaient ma camionnette Ă©taient des Firestone Transforce AT qui Ă©taient assez silencieux sur la route et relativement efficaces dans la boue. Car j’ai vraiment fait des sentiers hors-route avec ce gros Ram. Passez en 4 x 4 est un jeu d’enfant grĂące Ă  la commande Ă©lectrique au tableau de bord (quoique je n’en ai pas vraiment eu besoin dans le sentier que j’attaquais). MalgrĂ© ses dimensions imposantes, le RAM 2500 s’est dĂ©placĂ© avec aisance dans cette circonstance. Ce n’est pas la version Power Wagon (disponible qu’avec le V8 Ă  essence) mais sa fonction tout-terrain peut vraiment venir en aide pour du travail sĂ©rieux (comme sortir un bateau de l’eau ou tirer une remorque sur un chantier de construction boueux) ou mĂȘme en hiver si l’on est pris dans une neige profonde. En fait, je vois mieux ce camion tirer de remorques pour chevaux ou d’imposantes caravane que de jouer au 4 x 4 dans la boue!
Sur la route, ce gros Ram est trĂšs Ă  l’aise avec un moteur qui tourne Ă  peine Ă  1500 tr/mn en vitesse de croisiĂšre. Le moteur ronronne avec un son mĂ©lodieux (qui plait beaucoup aux amateurs de poids lourds qui ont une admiration sans borne pour les Cummins). Les reprises sont vraiment rassurantes. La visibilitĂ© y est imprenable et tous les passagers voyageront en tout confort. Oui, la suspension peut ĂȘtre sĂšche (surtout sur les rues dĂ©foncĂ©es de Laval!) et son encombrement n’en facilite pas l’utilisation en situation urbaine. Toutefois, nul doute que ce Ram pourrait ĂȘtre un vĂ©hicule idĂ©al pour tout entrepreneur ou utilisateur qui voudra en profiter autant au travail que pour ses loisirs! Quant Ă  sa consommation, ma semaine en dĂ©placements surtout urbains s’est chiffrĂ©e Ă  15,84 l/100 km alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 14,0.
Si le prix de base d’un Ram 2500 Longhorn Mega Cab 4 x 4 dĂ©bute Ă  78 995 $, celui qui m’a Ă©tĂ© confiĂ© avait des options comme la peinture Acier mĂ©tallique (245 $), les siĂšges avant en cuir ventilĂ© (100 $), l’ensemble de remorquage avec des camĂ©ras tout le tour (425 $), le groupe de sĂ©curitĂ© avec rĂ©gulateur de vitesse adaptatif (1600 $), le groupe Longhorn avec sonorisation de 17 haut-parleur, Ă©cran des 12 pouces, radio XM et marchepieds rĂ©tractables (2900 $), la boĂźte auto Ă  six rapports 2155 $), le pont arriĂšre antipatinage (525 $), Ă©videmment, le moteur diesel Cummins (7295 $), le toit ouvrant vitrĂ© (1425 $), Ă©clairage supplĂ©mentaire (110 $), jantes spĂ©ciales (950 $), crochets brillants (150 $), taxe fĂ©dĂ©rale pour la climatisation et les frais de transport et prĂ©paration de 1695 $, on en arrive Ă  une facture finale de 98 660 $...encore une fois auquel il faut ajouter les taxes provinciales et fĂ©dĂ©rales.
La superbe Bentley Flying Spur à Montréal
Cette semaine, j’ai aussi eu l’invitation de Bentley MontrĂ©al (des Moteurs DĂ©carie) pour y voir la premiĂšre grande berline (devrais-je dire limousine) Flying Spur de Bentley. Rappelons que cette incroyable voiture britannique (dont la marque appartient au groupe Volkswagen) est mue par le W12 du constructeur allemand de 635 chevaux vapeur (635 ps veut dire pferde stark, un terme allemand qui se traduit par force de cheval ou chevaux-vapeur pour vous et les deux mesures sont Ă©quivalentes) qui lui permet de passer de 0 Ă  100 km/h en 3,8 secondes et d’atteindre une vitesse maximale de 333 km/h.
Je pourrais vous en parler pendant des heures mais une image vaut mille mots. Notez le superbe travail de design surtout Ă  l’avant et au niveau des feux arriĂšre. Quant Ă  l’intĂ©rieur, on y voit vraiment le beau travail auquel les concepteurs «British» nous ont habituĂ©. J’ai dĂ©jĂ  conduit l’ancienne version de cette auto en Angleterre lorsque j’ai visitĂ© l’usine Bentley Ă  Crewe. J’espĂšre pouvoir revivre ces deux expĂ©riences dans un avenir rapprochĂ©. Ce serait vraiment «cool»! Ah oui, j’oubliais. Le prix? Il commence Ă  314 000 $...plus les options personnelles!
